God, I hate them.

And I don't feel bad for hating them.

And, I don't mean Henry Rollins.

Intense Dudes
From: London, South East England
Starring Ferry of Poverty Jetsets and more recently Semifinalists and Sam of Test Icicles, Intense Dudes lived a short but truly brilliant existence around the start of 2004. With three gigs at London's White Heat and one demo under their belt, Intense Dudes disbanded, as they had always meant to, just weeks into their musical anti-career.

Intense dudes, are hard to explain, but I know 'em when I see them. They sit around po-faced during godawful singer songwriter support acts. They don't like it when you take the piss out of these terrible support acts.

jel --, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Hetfield, Rollins et al. Are the acceptable face of intense!

To get off the fence would mean dabbling with intensity.

Liotta was born in Newark, New Jersey and was adopted six months after birth by Alfred Liotta, the president of a local Democratic club, and Mary, an appointed township clerk. Both of his parents unsuccessfully ran for local office. Despite his surname, he is not of Italian descent;[2]

I know many varieties of North American Intense Dude, including the Hippieish Collegiate Intense Dude, the Proto-Alcoholic Intense Dude, the Lower-Middle Class Upward Mobility Intense Dude, the Mainstream-Politics Intense Dude, the Mainstream-Religion Intense Dude, the Non-Mainstream-Religion Intense Dude, and the Cresty Blue-Spattled Warbler Intense Dude, and all of these I can wrap my head around, but most of my efforts to imagine ENGLISH Intense Dudes just make me recoil in horror.

xpost I can imagine British Intense Dudes as like hard men and hooligans, but Jel would seem to be talking about a non-tough Intense Dude. And "beardy guy who goes on about socialism" is as close as I can get in my head. Which, if I imagine him being British, strikes me as more "boring" than "intense."

nabisco, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

- beards
- lacking in humor
- "sit around po-faced during godawful singer songwriter support acts"

I am very curious how those photos happened. Also when tombot is going to release a trashy britpop album.

kenan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

In rock bands, the intensest dudes are almost always either the drummer or lead guitarist, and only .0000000001% of the time, the bassist.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

dan m, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

oh xpost YES I HAVE WITNESSES

kenan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

usually we hear "transmission" and usually we yell QUEERS QUEERS QUEERS QUEERS PLAYING JOY DIVISION over the chorus and also it is basically always one of us specifically most likely ghost rider putting it on for the purpose of yelling over the chorus.

BABIES IN A BAR

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

way worse than joy division in a bar: Bob Marley in a bar. That's the moment where you go, "Oh, sorry, I must be in the wrong bar."

kenan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but some bars you EXPECT you will hear Marley, rite?

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

Not the correct and proper bars. It's like putting on the Big Chill soundtrack or something. WTF PEOPLE ARE WE GOING TO LINE DANCE NEXT, YOU MORONS?

kenan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:45 (eighteen years ago)

jimmy buffett is worse than marley. i think i would walk out of the bar if i heard him.

Mr. Que, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

I think the only music anyone should ever be allowed to play in bars is THE HOKEY POKEY.

Today in the Salutation (a pub, rather than a bar): Joy Division, New Order, the Cure, Echo and the Bunneymen, Roxy Music, Kirsty MacColl and Pet Shop Boys. The Salutation is full of Intense Dudes, but of a slightly scary, heavily tattooed, grown-up Crusty / estate dwelling drug dealer variety. Good pub.

Endless xposts. Slow down people, this is too fucking intense.

Also, great in a bar.

all versions and remixes of common people are always appropriate to play at any time

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

Covered in spiders.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

If you're covered in spiders, might I recommend the Sad 80's Pub?

kenan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

Thank God for queers.

Oh, wait. I forgot. My "privilege". Let me get out my crackaphone, bro. Your words have inspired me. I'm calling the head honkey now. You will all have jobs tomorrow. *sarcasm*

wtf is that about

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, kingfish, just one hour ago this woman was on my floor fixing some computer thing, and I was really taken with her voice, and thinking "hey, I like this new person here," and then she said "well, I'm leaving early today, my favorite author of all time is reading at Barnes & Noble, and I don't want to miss it" -- someone asks "who?" and she says (grr) Palahniuk. So the audience at his readings, in addition to pseudo-intense guys verging-on-but-holding-animosity-toward the frat set who want to have sex with prostitutes to prove how much they understand the world, apparently also includes throaty-voiced friendly-looking girls who fix computers.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

it's ok if a girl likes Palahniuk

kenan, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

jess no

(actually hahahahahaha but, you know, appearances)

HI DERE, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

Having met plenty of girls who like Palahniuk, Kenan, I'm afraid to say his female fan base is not hugely different from or preferable to his male one.

(P.S. yes I shouldn't pick on the psychology of his fans just because I don't like his writing, but c'mon now, it's kinda asking for it.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

lesbian versions of manalishi? xpost

strgn, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really know anything about his writing, apart from Fight Club, and having read a couple descriptions of books that sounded kind of like he only had one book in him and now he was stretching everything wayyyy too thin. But I do not know what *kind* of person reads that.

Trayce, Wednesday, 9 May 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Nugent especially.

kenan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 07:10 (eighteen years ago)

is that...spiderman...back there?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 10 May 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

let's say that it is. One has to make some assumptions. Then we can move on to the Stormtrooper/American Gladiator, and what exactly he is doing with that shovel.

kenan, Thursday, 10 May 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

My thread really took off!

However, I think I have become less clear as to what I mean by intense dudes. I think I will just use it as a catch-all for people I don't particularly like.

Mr. Yuk is mad intense.

kenan, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Intense dudes, a field guide:

* short hair, slightly balding
* look older than they are
* annoyingly, they often have cute girlfriends
* only wear t-shirts, jeans and converse trainers
* work with computers or in the media
* hate fun
* prone to profanity

jel --, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Are all of those necessary, or any combination? Because I'm thinking a whole bunch of us are at least kinda like that.

kenan, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Have to have 'em all.

jel --, Friday, 11 May 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

still, dude, take "hate fun" out of that list, and you have a guy I can hang with.

kenan, Friday, 11 May 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

In rock bands, the intensest dudes are almost always either the drummer or lead guitarist, and only .0000000001% of the time, the bassist.
