NOLA, Little Rock, Tennesee, MO, Georgia, Georgia, and of course TX. Who else is up in here?

Let's talk about our favorite things: the weather and food.

Today in Austin, lovely cool morning, high this afternoon 90. Weatherman says "Hot and humid". My favorite kind of day. Tonight for dinner we're having ribs and potato salad.

What it do in your neck of the woods? Talk to me.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 12:55 (eighteen years ago)

The weather is exactly the same here in Little Rock: High of 90, hot and humid. NOT my favorite kind of weather, however, today some men start work on replacing our whole air conditioning system. Yay!

Dinner tonight? Probably a Marie Callendar "Cheesy Chicken w/ Rice" at midnight. Such is life with a baby.

sunny successor, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

I was joking about the hot and humid part. I figured and I take a break from my usual whining self as I've got months to go.

Yay fixed AC! A friend of ours who does HVAC came and fixed ours last weekend. Ahh, cold house. nice.

Ahh baby life. I actually thinking my cooking skills are up to par for life with a baby. I could eat frozen pizza every night and be a happy woman!

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 13:03 (eighteen years ago)

Tubing weather. Hell yeah.

adam, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

FUCK YEAH!

We're going to the lake on Memorial Day so I was talking about getting a new suit. Which prompted me to remind G. that we *must* go tubing soon before it gets too hectic.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Weather today and this past weekend in GA/FL: FIRE, PARTLY SMOKEY, W/ CHANCE OF DESTRUCTION.

petey_carnum, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that sucks.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

I drove into South Georgia this weekend to pick up an organ and Southbound 75 was shutdown, which made for some interesting backroads navigation in order to get home.

I guess since I technically live in Florida, I have no claims to this thread.

petey_carnum, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

no? why not?

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

Florida proper is it's own entity, though I suppose where I live seems more South Georgia than Florida proper.

petey_carnum, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

Hmm, according to wikipedia FL is considered part of the south traditionally but by modern defition you, and us here in TX, are only sometimes the south.

We definitely often regard ourselves as our own entity but I still think we're more South than West. (although Southwest is a completely different story.)

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

Time to cut off my hair, shave the beard and wear shorts for the next six months.

milo z, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

It's finally, FINALLY dead armadillo on the side of the road season. I took this one yesterday.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:40 (eighteen years ago)

The picture, not the armadillo.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

haha poor little fucker. I've never noticed how much they look like possums. . .

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I call 'em "possum on the half-shell." (I can't claim the phrase, but I don't remember where I heard it first.)

It's smoky-smelling all the way up here in N. MS.

Rock Hardy, Monday, 14 May 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

DEAD END

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 14 May 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

omg iiiijjj, that dead possum with the baby on your flickr is horrible.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

It wasn't a baby! It was a bloated stomach I think. You're horrible for thinking that.

iiiijjjj, Monday, 14 May 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

ah okay. bleargh. I thought it was a baby in a pouch or something.

Ms Misery, Monday, 14 May 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

ok i get that florida and texas, to varying degrees, are often not considered 'the south', but their own entities. what do you think about that? why is that? arkansas is the south right?

im sure we've had this discussion before and there was disagreement between certain people as to whether va/wv/ky were the south or not, or maybe whether they were the proper south?

696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 09:33 (eighteen years ago)

Traditional south seems defined by who was in the Confederacy. I'm not really sure by what basis "modern" definitions are made.

When I went out with the dogs around 6am it was a lovely, brisk cool morning. By the time I was walking to my office at a quarter of eight the heat and humidity were upon us. Damn TX weather. . .

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

We're supposed to have high 76/low 49 later this week!

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

bastards!

The high tomorrow is slated for 83 which pleases me enough. As the summer goes on low 80s sound really good.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

ah, ok, confederacy, that makes good sense

696, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)

Culturally the Florida panhandle is Southern but not really the rest of it, and the parts of Texas that border Arkansas and Louisiana are definitely Southern. I feel like once you get up into Oklahoma type country it gets vaguer.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

We've been without a/c for 24 hours now. Looks like we picked the best week of the season to do it. It's been hot, but the humidity has been reasonable, which is saying something for Arkansas.

Yeah, I guess The South is hard to define in some ways. There are certain pockets of Pennsylvania that could very loosely be defined as being part of the South. Look at Joe Biden, trying to tell everyone he's a Southerner because he's from Delaware.

I'd agree with Ms. Misery that The South is basically the former Confederacy, although Missouri has always stuck out like a sore thumb on that map.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Funny thing is, one of the thickest southern accents I ever heard was from an Okie.

Is "Okie" a pejorative term? I'm not sure...it's not meant to be in this case, anyway.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

I have no problem with perjorative terms for Oklahomians. :) (see also "Okie from Muskogee")

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Oklahoma is one of the deepest pits in hell.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Parts of Pennsylvania definitely feel Southern - even parts of southern New Jersey. It's a mountain thing. That Appalachian accent runs right up there.

Tracer Hand, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:55 (eighteen years ago)

Once when driving back to TX in the middle of the night my brother and I made a pit stop near some casino in OK. It was truly frightening. There was a legless guy panhandling us for gas money right next to a casino. at 3 or 4 am.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)

I was driving through Oklahoma once and I saw a billboard advertising Oklahoma wines. It said they were just as good as California wines, "but not as fruity." I thought that was pretty Southern.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Toby Keith is from Oklahoma. He wears snakeskin Stetson hats. Enough said.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:37 (eighteen years ago)

This sandwich claims to be "Nashville's Crunkest Fish":

http://farm1.static.flickr.com/221/499628231_133b64a41c.jpg?v=0

(it was delicious)

Do other Southern cities have competitions of Crunk?

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

I have no problem with perjorative terms for Oklahomians. :) (see also "Okie from Muskogee")

-- Ms Misery, Tuesday, May 15, 2007 9:51 AM (1 hour ago)

Really, it's the only thing people from Texas and Arkansas agree upon.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

I once got caught in a rush-hour traffic jam in Tulsa. I've never in my life seen so many dreamcatchers in one place.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, I've never been to New Mexico but I bet they could rival it.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Molly, is that the fish's head?? I know of no crunk contests here but there is a fish place near me called Phat Daddy's.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

dreamcatchers = shudder

pp, you going out at all this week?

Ai Lien, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

re: sandwich

i haven't had white bread in so long, it looks SO GOOD. i know you put hot sauce all over that thang!

Ai Lien, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.census.gov/population/estimates/state/rank/aiea.txt

gabbneb, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

The whitefish sandwich was all filet and no head (thank god). It had a delightful amount of Old Bay on it, as well as pickles, cheese, mustard, etc. It was spicy enough, actually, that I didn't slather it with hot sauce, for fear of my imminent demise.

What made it crunk, though, is a question I cannot answer.

(a better picture I found on the internets)

pp, you going out at all this week

Playing at S.F. tomorrow night. Going to the movie on Friday. Playing it by ear the rest of the times. I'm just now recovering from a sore throat, so I don't know if I can do WWT tonight, even though that's likely the best show of the week.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

what the hell how is that even a sandwich

people can't be going around putting slices of bread on top of and on bottom of assorted foods all willy nilly and calling them sandwiches. if we lose our grasp on sandwich structure the term becomes meaningless and that will seriously bum me out because they're one of my favorite foodstuffs

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

oh hey look i'm eating a burrito

oh cool hey put a piece of bread on either side LOOK IT'S AUTOMATICALLY A BURRITO SANDWICH

no

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

But this is what Nashville does! We like putting whitebread on anything. Hot Chicken is ripped off the bone, placed on whitebread with pickles and coleslaw (see also Yo La Tengo's song, "Return to Hot Chicken").

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

there there

Ai Lien, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

i'm from a place where foods don't masquerade under the guise of other foods that they aren't

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

There's some similar chicken in Dallas called Brothers. You buy a big of chicken and it comes with slices of white bread at the bottom, pickle slices and jalapenos. The bread soaks up all the grease so you can make a yummy sandwich. They also come with fries covered in Lawry's seasoning. ::drool::

(Those oreo cookies, by the way, are the best drawn items to ever appear in a "Family Circus" panel.)

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm eating lunch. I ate a big bite of English muffin, a big bite of eggs, then another big bite of English muffin. Made it into a sandwich, right? I'm going to keep going in that order so my lunch is a lot of little sandwiches.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

Yes! Sam! The whitebread also cuts down on the intense heat that has just infiltrated your mouth.

Creative sandwich making is AOK with me.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost
They look like casino chips.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

Casinos would make even bigger profits if they used oreo cookies instead of regular clay chips.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

xxpost I love creativity! But within the established bounds of the sandwich realm. Those fundamentals exist for a reason -- because they are tried and true. I don't need to explain how nervous I was when I stopped into a Quiznos for the first time and witnessed the loaf being cut diagonally.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

Life must be hard for you.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:46 (eighteen years ago)

I am loving Texas weather and Texas barbecue. At the end of June I'm moving to NC where the 'cue isn't as good but you can get sweet tea at like, Taco Bell. (I think the sweet tea issue is probably the fundamental difference between Texas and "the South")

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:51 (eighteen years ago)

iiiijjjj, the sandwich boundaries which you love (for good reason!) were made to be broken. Yes, it does seem a bit absurb to have all the fish hanging outside the bread. But what's better? A sandwich with fits into all the sandwich norms? Or a local delicacy that's amazingly delicious?

I will take substance over style, in this case.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

sweet tea's available plenty here! If you're leaving in June you know you're missing the best part of summer.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Right now McDonalds offers an ice-cold 99¢ sweet tea for a limited time only.

iiiijjjj, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

ice tea = life blood

i am, however, in the un-sweetened tea camp. i know, i know.

Ai Lien, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)

well in NC you literally can get sweet tea anywhere, and it's the real deal southern sweeter-than-Coke sweet tea. And I do love it. (Sam I made it sound like I was just visiting TX, but I'm Aaron A. from Dallas if you remember me -- we never met up at Ships! Which has gone wayyy downhill in the past year or so u_u)

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

when i worked in a restaurant, they put two cups of sugar in the tea while it was being made. !! whoooooo-weeee! my teeth hurt just thinking about it.

Ai Lien, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)

Which has gone wayyy downhill in the past year or so u_u

!!!! How? Granted it wasn't that far from the bottom anyway. I've been to Dallas a couple of times in the past year but have avoided Ships. Sometimes it's best just not to revisit the past.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a transplanted Northerner, and did not realize the full glory of sweet tea until I moved down here. Why is it so refreshing and delicious? Oh, wait... sugar.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

hipsters at the bar is OK, hipsters behind the bar is bad, at least in this case. xpost

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Every now and then I'll get the Sonic sweet tea. But it's teeth-aching, truly.

xpost

really? Hmm. Many of the old regulars around or has it just become hipster dive central?

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:22 (eighteen years ago)

yeah when you add like 5x the normal amount of sugar to tea, it becomes a whole different beverage.

(Ships: I wasn't enough of a regular to know the regulars, but I did know a couple of the bartenders and they weren't around, and yeah the place was crawling with 20's, moreso than in '03 - '04.)

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:24 (eighteen years ago)

Man how did I miss this thread.

Souf represent etc.

I am in the midst of a plate of delicious brisket and sweet tea from Ruby's in Austin TX. Its 90ish, but its dry so I don't mind so much.

Got the day off from work, gonna run and get my hair cut and buy some incense to kick start this meditation shit. Life is good down this end.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

are you posting from Ruby's??

I'm still at work. Not looking forward to the hot commute. . .

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Hah, not quite. To-go is a lifesaver.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

mmm, Ruby's. Sam, I've been trying to remember what my favorite D-Town bbq was and I'm coming up empty. Baker's ribs were allright. The original Sonny B's was pretty good, but I swear even the run-of-the-mill stuff down here (oh I'm in Central TX now) is better than 99% of Dallas bbq.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

I need to get the AC in my car sorted, as it's on the fritz and not pleasant for the summer months. Does anyone know how much it costs to get your AC charged?

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I can't think of any good BBQ in Dallas. I think all food is better here? Where in central TX are you?

Molly, I don't know. Luckily our friend comped us last week.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Belton (off 35 just south of Temple). I love TX but Belton and the surrounding area is just lame, so I'm moving.

With the bank's signoff today, I am officially going to be spending most most of my summer and fall in sunny Llano, TX, 60 minutes away from anything resembling civilization. Three barbecue places, a Subway, a couple of breakfast cafes... or a 20 minute drive to Marble Falls for Chili's (ugh).

One hour due west of Georgetown or 1:10 from NW Austin.

I better make a hell of a lot of money.

Hey P. Plains, I can't say I recommend installing a ceiling fan on your own anymore. Yesterday I got shocked by a hot wire that wasn't supposed to be hot. Fortunately, my dad came over and helped me out, and that was the last room in the house that needed one. (Good thing, he's 78 and getting too old and creaky in the joints for fan installations.)

I'll be glad when ILX 2.2 goes live...it has a longer New Answers history, doesn't it? I had to use the search function to find this thread.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 18 May 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

note: my house is 80+ and poorly insulated ;(

will, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

The AC wasn't going on in the apt. and it started to smell gross in there. Mind you, we live in a "garden apt." meaning it's a CAVE. I didn't know, when moving down here, that living in a pseudo-basement was such a bad idea. On the plus side, I'm MOVING July 1st, to a brand new rowhouse.

thanks for the warning there. Screaming H1 a little NSFW

Molly, what allergens are bothering you?

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)

nashvegas is notorious for terrible allergies. everything is bothering me apparently. mold, tree pollen, weeds, etc.

some dude just called my radio show and was like, "d'y'all got any henry rollins?"

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

nashvegas?!?

sorry about the allergies. When we get cedar in late winter/early spring it kills me. This year I had to wear a mask outdoors. ugh.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)

really? a mask! that's terrible! yeah, my eyes have never gotten so swollen before. like two pissholes in the snow.

yes! nashvegas, or trashville, if you prefer (see also lower broadway and its utter tackineses. it's kind of awesome)

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)

I've only passed through Nashville briefly. I need to give it a proper visit.

I'm irritated b/c starting this semester I'm eligble for our ed benefit (3 free hours a semester). I have yet to decide what graduate program I'd like to pursue so thought I would take some undergrad courses just for kicks. I wanted to try and find some that related to some of my fiction projects, for research purposes, but I can't find anything! so annoying. I don't want to let my free course go to waste. :(

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

are there any fiber arts courses you can take? i was really hoping v4ndy had a spinning class (wool, not stationary bikes), but no dice.

can you audit undergrad classes that don't cut into your 3 hours of free learnin'?

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

re:auditing. . Don't you still have to pay tuition when you audit?

I def. looked into textile arts (as a grad program actually) but here it's really heavy on apparel. There's an intro textiles class I looked at but with the lab and stuff I may not be able to swing it. If the class isn't directly related to my job (info sciences, computer sciences) I would have to use vacation time or work extra hours to cover it.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)

oh bummer about the textiles. i think it's the same here. there's a beginning knitting class... but i don't think i need that shit.

if we properly enroll in a course here, we have to pay (with a big discount). however, auditing for us is free, and i've been meaning to take some portuguese courses, but i find that i'm incredibly lazy.

this weekend I learned that some barbecue places call dumplings "pastry"

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:10 (eighteen years ago)

why is a barbecue place selling dumplings?

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Hi dere.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

why is a barbecue place selling dumplings?

because dumplings are delicious and very easy to make.

kenan, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

I love dumplings I've just never seen them connected to BBQ.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

omg bbq-filled dumplings.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

The southern answer to those chinese sweet buns with spicy pork in the middle.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

for some reason I can only imagine hushpuppies. with brisket in the middle.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

!!!

Somebody could make a million few thousand dollars with an "East Meets South" restaurant.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:31 (eighteen years ago)

the "!!!" was for the 'cue-dumplings. I can't get quite as worked up for brisketpuppies.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:32 (eighteen years ago)

The name alone has me sold. First recipe I create in new kitchen: brisketpuppies.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

bbq dumplings, served with a side of fried okra and greens.

omg, i'm so hungry.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

god yeah, it's 10:30 and I want hush puppies dammit!

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

That sounds awesome Molly.

There's a soul food restaurant not too far away. Fried Okra, greens, chicken fried chicken. . .I wonder if I could persuade anyone to go over there. . .

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:38 (eighteen years ago)

I know, man. I'm trying to lost some wait so all I had last night was stir fried veggies and my lunchbox has organic pb sandwich plus carrot stick plus apple. Dinner tonight is probably beans and rice.

Barbecueand soul food, stop existing, plz.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

Yes I'm also trying to lose weight so Hoover's is really not a good idea. :(

I don't! that's why weather is a priority for me. A priority for BITCHING! ;)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

sorry I should clarify that that's dumplings as in "chicken and".

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

num!

ok yes then the "pastry" bit seems dumb.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

and actually I'm still not 100% sure about that; it's just that I went to this barbecue place that had a "pastry combo" that was like $4.50 for hush puppies, tea, a "long leg" (chicken leg with thigh attached?), and "1/2 pint of pastry". we were trying to figure out what it could be and the dumplings explanation was the only one that made sense given the units of measure involved.

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

where do you live?

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

(sounds like another diet breaker)

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Somebody could make a million few thousand dollars with an "East Meets South" restaurant

Yeah, this is gold...

I haven't been there in years, Rock, but there was a place in Water Valley, MS when my parents lived there that was doing this. The proprietors were Laotian (I think?) and mixed it up with some southern dishes. It was probably more a haphazard "meat n' three" than exotic fusion cuisine though.

will, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

Actually, it's not uncommon around here to find places that'll serve you either fried fish or pho. At one point Airport Haven Burgers had a pakistani specialties menu.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

There was a Nepalese meat-&-three in Oxford around '96-'97.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, as a transplanted Northener, I have to say, well, it's gets so fucking hot and humid down here, FOR MONTHS AT A TIME. But, as one develops a tolerance for cold and snow (hello, Buffalo!), I'm hoping one can develop a certain tolerance to heat. Also, I love my central AC.

Mangos are on sale at Kroger! This may be possible! Is 66 cents a mango a good price?

kenan, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't that what all these threads are about Kenan?

I've seen mangos as cheap as 3/1.00 but I haven't bought any this year. Don't know how many you'd need for a pie. Maybe throw in some pineapple and papaya and make a tropical one!

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

ok point taken. this is just like the chicago thread.

kenan, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

Now, I've never made a cream pie... I should try it.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

The Diarrhea of Anne Frank

I saw them in Memphis once, opening for the Jesus Lizard. The lead singer had a bucket of simulated runny shit that he slung at the crowd occasionally. (I assume it was simulated -- I think I would have smelled it if it were the real stuff.)

For pies: blueberries! I'm going to share in the bounty of my parents' blueberry bushes in a couple of weeks if the mockingbirds don't get them first.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

Better phrasing: he would stick his hand in the bucket and flick his fingers at the audience, not toss the whole bucketful around.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I don't get fruit pies. I know it hurts my southerner cred, but I'll just take raw fresh fruit 99 times out of 100.

The remainder is garnishing cocktails.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

Berry pies are senstational.

I have a great cobbler recipe, will look it up shortly. It makes that fluffy inside-of-a-biscuit type of cobbler, not the kind with the chewy top crust.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:39 (eighteen years ago)

Sure I get chocolate cake. It's not the sweetness (although I'll take my chocolate more on the bitterish side, thanks) its that I prefer the texture of fresh fruit - and most veggies for that matter - to cooked.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Here is a cobbler:

Put your fresh fruit in the bottom of a baking dish -- 2 to 2 1/2 cups or so.

Heat together a syrup of 1 cup water and 3/4 cup sugar. No need to boil it, just get the sugar dissolved. Pour this over the fruit.

Cream together 1 stick of softened butter and 1/2 cup sugar.
Mix 1 cup SR flour and 1/2 cup milk. Combine the flour/milk with the butter/sugar until smooth, and add flavors like vanilla and cinnamon at this point.

Pour this batter over the fruit + syrup. Bake @ 350 until golden, 1:00 or so.

The batter will soak up the syrup as it bakes, making fluffy top and fruity bottom. You might want a more syrupy bottom layer -- you can increase the amt. of syrup about 1/4 cup at a time until you get it the way you want it, and eat the experiments with ice cream, obviously.

Serves 1.

I wouldn't know what adjustments to make if you were using canned fruit. You don't want to do that anyway.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

bernard - hammocks are heavenly. you're going to have the best time.

Rock - thank you so much! I think the one I made had some hippie dippy granola in it. Boo. And also, boo to canned fruit. I have made a personal resolution this summer to stop at every roadside farmstand I see. I have already gained the most DELICIOUS tomatoes.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 22 May 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

New 35 mm print at the Alamo!

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

I will probably watch AI tonight, even though I didn't watch all of it last night. And then I will watch my DVR-ed recordings of today's Knitty Gritty, because I am super awesome and exciting.

I have never seen an episode of LOST.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

That looks pretty cool Austin.

Molly, netflix, now. How do you like Knitty Gritty? I've seen a few episodes mostly to check out a hometown girl made big. But I wasn't that impressed.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

Really? I take it I can't just start watching and have any idea what's going on.

Knitty Gritty - meh, it's okay. At first Vicky H annoyed me, but I think I like her now. It's all a little hokey "knitsters," and "Knit on!" but, I'll take what I can get with knitting cable programs. The knit bikini episode I watched last night was a bit dumb, but the knit shoes! The woman who came up with the pattern was an engineering GENIUS. Not that I would ever wear them, but the pattern was intense. There's a fair share of sparkly knit tops, which I can't be bothered to even give two thoughts to, but the knit housewares show was fantastic.

It's going to hit 90 here today. blurgh.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

we're still low 80s. Yeah you have to watch Lost from the beginning. I didn't start until season 2 so had to catch up.

Yeah I saw Vicky speak at SXSW and she implied she was kind of restrained by the corporate aspects of television. I think the yarn she has to use a lot of times is vom-inducing but is neccesary b/c of sponsors and such.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

it was cooler in Austin last night than in Chicago, I couldn't help but notice. :(

kenan, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah it's been kind of mild lately. I don't trust it though as I feel it's a cruel trick before the hell of summer is unleashed.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

Also, it's our first Ozone warning of the year! Yay, Nashville! ;_;

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

I watched the entire Dixie Chicks set on Austin City Limits a couple of days ago. I went to HS in Dallas with 2 of them -- the two girls who aren't Natalie. They would play at every orientation. I remember them being accomplished but boring (mostly just bluegrass back then). I think they're really pretty ok now though.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

where did you go to school?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

It is official! I'm moving into a sweet (brandnew) rowhouse July 1st.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

Greenh1ll (I was only there a year though)

are my fellow Texans being inundated with Miller Chill radio ads featuring white people speaking with 'funny' 'Spanish' accents?

milo z, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

No, but there's a local Chevy dealership that has commercials featuring Seymour Trucks, Les Cash, DeLois Price and a little sweaty serape-and-sombrero-wearing guy named Peso Little.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 23 May 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, I haven't heard those ads Milo but I don't listen to "terrestial" radio.

I have seen it in the stores though adn am curious. Not curious enough to buy it though.

4) Wish the Worst
5) Wish the Worst
6) Wish the Worst
7) Murder (or a Heart Attack)
8) Dressing Room Walls

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

I've decided that "Hitchhike to Rhome" is my favorite Old 97's album. It was Too Far To Care to start with, then I decided I liked the twangier sounds of Wreck Your Life... but these days, I just want to listen to Hitchhike.

milo z, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:10 (eighteen years ago)

srlsy tho ethan, with every successive post, just reveals himself more and more to be the white boy hiptard poser fag he is, i swear i usecd to look up to him in thbe days when he was an eminem groopie, wtf is rong with me!!

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:11 (eighteen years ago)

Have you heard Funland's cover of "Stoned" off a split single they did many years back?

milo z, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:12 (eighteen years ago)

i haven't, but my appreciation of the 97's catalogue has followed yours exactly

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:13 (eighteen years ago)

Top 10:
1. "Dressing Room Walls"
2. "St. Ignatius"
3. "Doreen" (WYL)
4. "Stoned"
5. "4-Leaf Clover" (HTR)
6. "Lonely Holiday"
7. "W.I.F.E."
8. "Victoria"
9. "Big Brown Eyes" (TFTC)
10. "Melt Show"

milo z, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:15 (eighteen years ago)

they still play out in Dallas, and I will catch them again

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:48 (eighteen years ago)

milo z, Thursday, 24 May 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

shit I may miss every last 97's show just to avoid Dallas

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 24 May 2007 01:18 (eighteen years ago)

omg, I haven't listened to the Old 97s in forever. I used to love them (still do just not in awhile). I agree with all the tracks you guys are picking. Their shows used to be the best but one of the last times I saw them (at Tree's about four years ago), it just sucked. Don't dig Rhett the hollywood boy. Saw them one other time after that at Sons of Hermann Hall as the "Satellite Rider" and it was just like an old show, fantastic. I think I shall never see them again to perserve that memory.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 24 May 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

1-9)Wish the Worst
10) Big Brown Eyes

I haven't listened to them in ages. The last album I bought of theirs was "Wreck Your Life." I could be persuaded to buy more albums of theirs, if it can be guaranteed that they are awesome.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 24 May 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Wreck Your Life is my favorite. I haven't liked anything past Fight Songs but that one and Too Far to Care are worth buying I think.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 24 May 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

The other day I played the Sound on WREK, and some guy called in asking who they were. Then for some reason he went on a teary rant about Brendan O'Brien and how "Brendan O'Brien knows how to make hits for other people, and Brendan O'Brien knows how to produce other bands, but Brendan O'Brien can't make hits of his own because Brendan O'Brien just doesn't know how to write good songs!" I think he may have been Brendan O'Brien.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 24 May 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

I was scared to open this thread today because of my idiotic dig on ethan... I am in a BAD PLACE these days and alcohol only fuels my misguided misanthropy.

Yeah I love Fight Songs, poppy but still good. The "Satellite" one (I honestly can't remember the name of that album) was where things were (finally) going wrong. No desire to buy The Instigator or any other solo Rhett. Saw him on Letterman once and it was kinda sad... he was far less compelling than solo Ryan Adams and that is saying a LOTTTTTT.

(TS: Whiskeytown vs. 97's?)

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 24 May 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

97s def. but yeah Rhett solo. . .no.

What dig?

Ms Misery, Friday, 25 May 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

Whiskeytown has a few good songs but nothing as consistent or enjoyable as Old 97's (except for Satellite Rides, which is 50% awful and Drag It Up, 100% awful)

milo z, Friday, 25 May 2007 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

old 97s kills thread. . .

How was everyone's memorial day weekend? Were you nearly washed away too?

Still steamy out from all the wet ground but nice and sunny/hot.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:23 (eighteen years ago)

i have no idea what an old 97 is.

memorial day weekend was ok. we skipped riverfest for the first time since ive been here. visited some newly preggo friends on monday. ummm...i cant think of anything else we did.

oh...STARLITE WAS CLOSED

sunny successor, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

We saw the Old 97s in that Break Up movie with Jennifer Anniston and Vince Vaughn. Yup.

On a related topic, Soul Asylum's coming to town.

It's been nice and cool lately here. Keep it up, weather.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

we are in the middle of the drought, which is exactly the way summer should be.

I have never listened to the Old 97s but TS: Old 97s "Big Brown Eyes" vs. dBs "Big Brown Eyes"

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:45 (eighteen years ago)

who is dB? Love the 97s version.

We had so much rain from mid last week through Monday that bridges were being washed out and people were drowning. Also our boating weekend was wrecked. :(

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:48 (eighteen years ago)

I wish I had a scanner at work so I could show y'all the photo that was in yesterday's newspaper. Suffice to say, the caption was:

Teenagers compete in a team event to dress a steer in a pair of panties.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

xpost: The dBs were a jangly power-pop group from North Carolina. they're pretty great, but I didn't grow up listening to them, so I don't have the same attachment that I do to other jangle-merchants like Let's Active and R.E.M.

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

also I'm pretty sure they're two different songs that just happen to have the same title, unless the chorus of the Old 97s one goes "every time I look into your big brown eyes, I get paralyzed, paralyzed"

bernard snowy, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

That Miller Chill stuff is, according to my coworker "really gross--it's got fake sweetened lime." He was not impressed. "How hard is it to slice a lime and add salt?!"

patita, Wednesday, 30 May 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Teenagers compete in a team event to dress a steer in a pair of panties.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

Send 'em here, we're desperate.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:08 (eighteen years ago)

> The rain gods are in Austin again today. what the hell?

I believe this is what's referred to as "late spring, early summer."

Memorial day floods, anyone?

Oilyrags, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)

I like that shot of the original whole foods.

My in-laws' neighbors actually died in the floods this weekend. :(

Ms Misery, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:30 (eighteen years ago)

Jeez, I'm sorry to hear that.

Some friends of my landlady drowned in their car a few weeks ago, when the warning light on one of those low-water crossings broke, so they didn't know not to cross.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:32 (eighteen years ago)

More Austin floods:

http://www.ci.austin.tx.us/watershed/floodhistory.htm

Oilyrags, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah a creek runs behind my guy's parent's house. When we go after a heavy rain the "bridges" are often washed out. Well, this elderly couple was trying to cross one, their car got stuck, they got out and were washed away. It's out in the country (Copperas Cove) so there aren't any warning signs or anything. The flash floods are scary since it seems most people die b/c they don't realize how dangerous it is. Makes me glad I live in central Austin.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 31 May 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

Rock, here too. There's a 20% chance of rain today. Everything is turning yellow and sad.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

What's your high like? perhaps we could trade rain for nice temps.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:36 (eighteen years ago)

NOAA says 84 today, weather widget says 87. NOAA's numbers are always a few degrees cooler, the reality is always somewhere in the middle. I'm keeping the garden well watered, but the oldtimers say chlorinated city water is bad without an occasional real rain to leach that shit out of the soil. The yard is in sad shape. I need to remember to put the hose on the ginkgo trees this evening.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

It's supposed to be a high of 88 today, but it's really overcast now, and NPR claimed it was 71F. As I left work yesterday, the sun was freakishly obscured due to the smoke. Also, my allergies have gone berserk, and are in the "I'm gonna fuck you up" stage. Rain will be sweet relief.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 31 May 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

I was in Missouri during the Big Flood of '93. I went to visit my roommate who was back at his folks' house outside Kansas City. We and a few of his high school buddies went out to this rock quarry that had been flooded. The whole thing had turned into this small lake with many a cool cliff to jump from. We all had a good time, especially this one guy who kept picking higher and higher places from which to jump.

We got back home and changed into dry clothes. My roommate then said something like, "Kinda weird that Luke was so into jumping in the water and whooping it up so." I asked why and my friend answered "Because his sister drowned last week when her car got washed off the road."

Talk about facing your supposed fears head on...

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 31 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

knoxville's been lovely the last few days - serious drought still in effect, though

memorial day itself - fantastic weather for paddling around chilhowee lake and abrams creek

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 31 May 2007 17:13 (eighteen years ago)

great memorial day hanging out @ my home. we played baggo! i stood behind a grill for two hours! i shouldn't complain because i kept chasing people away from MY grill.

there are these great rose gardens by the courthouse, where i work. my co-worker & i spent some of our lunch break picking some. we totally got yelled at by a maintenance guy. he said we'd be in "big trouble" if we got caught. as he was yelling at us, we just kept picking them. now my office smells so good!

Ai Lien, Thursday, 31 May 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 31 May 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

Oh yeah, this is a food and weather thread... so, hams. What else?

ljubljana, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

I'd like to taste the sausage made from that monster. I don't know whether it'd be good because he was free-range, or bad because he was probably old and tough. Sausage would probably be better than whole ham or shoulder...

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

Never been to Abilene, but Texas would be a culture shock for me, and I'm just two states over.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

But, we do like our food.

haha, this is an anything thread. Those are just a couple of a Southerner's favorite topics.

Molly, is Abielene known for it's hams? This is news to me. I've only driven through so I can't really say much except the whole panhandle area is known to be pretty bleak. What school is he going to?

(oh wait Molly was talking about hogzilla. . .)

Ms Misery, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know! Think of all the crap he must have ingested (garbage, weeds, small children, etc.) to get that huge. I would assume he would taste nasty.

No no! I cannot make any claim to the quality of ham in Abilene!

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

From Abilene you can drive into Ft. Worth to par-tay.

Ft. Worth is also going to be culture shock, but there will at least be culture.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

I've been through Abilene. You fight from the eastern borders through the metroplex, hit the plains, and finally Abilene. Once you're there, you think, oh good, just a few more hours to El Paso, but little do you know that you're still 83674 hours away from The Pass.

Also, Sweet Eileen lives in Abilene and has the law out for me.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard that wild hog is a million times better than agribusiness pork, like eating free range chicken or cow.

I think this is shot from the west or southwest, that tall building in the rear is the first thing you see coming into Abilene from Ft. Worth.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

"The cultural aspects of Abilene center around a mix of the three religiously affiliated private universities: Abilene Christian University, Hardin-Simmons University, and McMurry University, as well as the Abilene Campus of Cisco Junior College, a West Texas campus of Texas State Technical College, American Commercial College, the agriculture community of the surrounding area, and the numerous affluent evangelical churches present."

He's going to teach (it looks like) theology at Hardin-Simmons. If I visit I can't stay with him. Because we're not married and he'll be a role model... And it's been explained to me that one or two people may wish to explain to me that I'm headed for hell as an a****st. Hmmmm.

He's from Fort Worth. It's about four hours drive isn't it?

ljubljana, Thursday, 31 May 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

...er, I mean it looks like he's going to teach there, not he's going to teach something that looks like theology...

P. Plains, remember the thread you started where you asked for suggestions for music/scripts for station liners? (I think liners is the right term, but not sure.) I can't find the thread, but how'd those turn out? Did you use any of our suggestions?

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 2 June 2007 01:27 (eighteen years ago)

I can't find that thread at all. And I don't know what the hell a "stop-word" is supposed to be either.

Seems like I used one or two of them. dammit, now you've made me curious.

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 2 June 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

Maybe it was at the Sandbox?

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 2 June 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)

No luck there either, especially without knowing the thread title.

m.m. i was sick of getting sunglasses-shaped tan on my face, so that outweighed any insecurities of carrying an umbrella. also, it led to other "lady-like" habits. like carrying a handkerchief.

Ai Lien, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

also, it's just a southern thang to do.

Ai Lien, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

Well, I do put on sunblock before I head out. But I'm sure the portable shade would help with comfort levels. I carry a bandana, is that like a handkerchief?

Ms Misery, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

heck yes. my stepmum is from japan, she always brings me new handkerchiefs. like a lot of them. i think it's customary for japanese to carry around little towels or hankys everywhere.

Ai Lien, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

I had a Texasy day, drove from Belton to New Braunfels for work, ate Mexican for lunch, inquired about why there weren't any drunk kidsz floating down the Guadalupe, learned the river was still closed cuz it was too high and fast, just barely outran hailstorm on the drive back home, listened to conservative talk radio while driving thru Austin for fun.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 4 June 2007 23:51 (eighteen years ago)

hot springs trip planned for next week!

Ai Lien, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

Ooh! Hot Springs! I have never been, but have been intrigued from the stories I've heard.

I'm spending next Sunday on a pontoon boat in Kentucky.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:28 (eighteen years ago)

conservative radio for fun!?

i think it's customary for japanese to carry around little towels or hankys everywhere.

Louisanians too.

A Diet Dr. Pepper has busted open in my bag. I did not realize this until I'm looking through said bag, which is on my lap, and wondered why the bottom was so wet. :(

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:33 (eighteen years ago)

I think I need to carry a handkerchief, because I am not used to heat, and also, I'm a lady. (I perspire, not sweat)

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:42 (eighteen years ago)

argh, sorry about busted dr. pepper! boo.

hot springs is a weird place, but i like it.

Ai Lien, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

But I'm nowhere near as elegant as she is so worry about looking like a fool.

Wear one of those umbrella hats. Then you don't have to worry. I hope I'm helping.

Also, I think it's ladies glisten or glow, gentlemen perspire, and mules sweat.

Kerm, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:04 (eighteen years ago)

The word "glisten" freaks me out. It makes me sound oily. "Glow", well, I don't like it either.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yes if anything I'm a step above a horse. No glowing here.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Ladies collect condensation like glasses of sweet iced tea...

Kerm, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:06 (eighteen years ago)

Yes! That's much better!

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

Or busted dr peppers. My jeans are still wet, :(

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, bummer, Sam! Nothing is worse than getting sugary-things on one's person.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

Ok, there are worse things, but it still sucks.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

there are worse things

Yeah, it was a Diet.

Kerm, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

sam, i just had a coke spray all over me and my work desk. must be the day for it.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

Sodas are bad for you. This is why I drink vodka shots. They're smaller and easier to control. Plus, if you spill a bottle all over you there's no problem because alcohol has a low boiling point and evaporates pretty quick. You gotta wait a while but you can have a couple drinks if you don't spill it all like a rookie.

Kerm, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

diet dr pepper is the bomb.

At lunch I got a sweet tea and it also spilled in my bag. Today is bad for beverage.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

too bad you dont have a kid. strollers have great cupholders these days.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

okay. i just reread that.

so why did you decide to have a baby?
the cupholders.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

Also, vodka looks like water, and fools everyone who looks at the clear liquid in your Nalgene bottle.

"Molly, you're in a good mood!"
"Yes, this 'water' is delicious!"

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

OK I had a sweet tea at lunch, disproving my no sweet tea in TX theory. The burger I had with it sucked, though, so this place was run by yankees or aliens.

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

Dudes: am I Yankee for life? Even though I live in the South now and have no plans to move North?

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Quite possibly. I would just lie.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

Someone old lady told me I'm "not obnoxious like some Yankees" therefore I don't count.

That was nice.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

wanko ergo sum, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:42 (eighteen years ago)

I've been called a Yankee because I'm from north-central Arkansas.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

I've never actually heard anyone get bagged on for being a Yankee, but I guess DFW is only vaguely southern. Half the people are first-generation and the accent is almost non-existent.

milo z, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

I call people yankees. ;)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

There's this old dude on the local news who does a less crabby Andy Rooney-type bit. He has the best accent ever, and I'm afraid no one else will carry on the legacy of Awesome Fancy Nashville Accents. If I could, I would, but I'd totally be a faker.

molly i spent the first 18 years of my life in tennessee but i lost my accent after moving to new york --> me = yankee

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

I was raised in a retirement community filled with people from Iowa and Illinois. I've been working in radio since I was sixteen. I lived in Missouri and Minnesota for three years.

In other words, I'm lucky to have any accent at all.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've ever had a Texan accent.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

I had a twang when I was eight. I don't have one now at all (I've been told I sound like a Yankee). I forget when things started changing.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:58 (eighteen years ago)

(nb I've never lived in a heavily accented area; I think my early accent was picked up from my dad's family)

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 16:59 (eighteen years ago)

I grew up in DFW and my father was a Mexican-American yankee so perhaps that had something to do with it.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)

In the almost 2 years that I've lived here, things like "wreck" and "INsurance" have infiltrated my speech. Happily, though, I don't have the WNY accent, which is just really bad. Apparently, though, when I'm excited, I yell "Oh my GAHD" like a true Rust Beltonian.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

Really? Yeah, all the ambulance-chaser lawyer ads up North say "Been in a car accident?" Same goes for traffic-copters and news channels, and regular folks, i.e.: "There was a terrible accident on the 90."

Also, "inSURance"

Tracer, yes! I love "UMbrella."

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard "accident" obv.! I just thought "wreck" was a universal synonym!

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

Right, of course! But, in regular parlance, people will say "accident" instead of wreck. The only time you ever hear "wreck" is, well, not often. Maybe if like your Skidoo crashed into a tree or something.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

I guess it's used more in verb form, like "I wrecked my car", or "I was totally wrecked, and I wrecked my skidoo."

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

yeah

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

haha "greazy" - I say that. I also pronounce the "h" in "white" and "what" etc. which has earned me a lot of befuddling scorn over the years

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

i dont say aint alot really but yall goes at least once every couple sentences

i had no idea about the 'wreck' thing!!

and what, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Y'all" is a good word, it fills its need perfectly. I didn't have a lot of years in California, but they were formative ones -- my southern accent isn't very thick.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

I only sound Texan when I'm drunk or when I want to. Other than that I picked up the Cali non-accent of my pops and grandparents.

After years of avoiding y'all it has worked its way in, but only because generic alternatives ('you guys') are just as bad. I have become a huge fan of ain't lately - it works for emphasis.

milo z, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

i spent the first 32 years of my life in Australia. A few weeks ago a man with a very heavy arkansas accent asked me if I was from chicago.

"wreck" was so weird to me when I got here. Also calling pickups "trucks". We call them "utes". And I'll never get past spelling tyre "t-i-r-e". I picked up "yall" pretty quick though. (im sure there are more than auto associated language barriers but i cant think of them right now)

worst of all, pp pointed out to me some time back that when, in my accent, i say "cant" it sounds a lot like another C word.

sunny successor, Thursday, 7 June 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

Plz get PP to record you saying "Y'all come quick, there's a wreck down the road" and post MP3. That would be awesome cool neat awesome.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)

Chicago, Australia, whatever... it all falls into that category of "not Arkansas."
Kidding. I never really had much of an accent but when you hang out with rural people after awhile you sort of pick up their patterns, at the shop where I work there are some guys in the print shop from outside of the city and I'll come home saying things like "Shoot, I ain't got nothin' to do with it." and "Dang y'all, what the heyul." I like it.

Jrom, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)

That's the white side of my family to a T. While visiting my aunt in the country a friend of theirs dropped by to have a beer on the porch with us. I swear it was like trying to have a conversation with Boomhauer. I couldn't understand half of what he said.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:09 (eighteen years ago)

haha, ALL of my parents' friends to thread. Except for the English couple who moved across the street from them -- they're the only people I can have a conversation with.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:12 (eighteen years ago)

I ended up getting to a disturbingly long conversation with a woman from Alabama at the flea market. Her accent was amazing. I loved it. Mind you, she was crazy and took the conversation from Whooping Cough to Mongolian BBQ in a matter of seconds, but she said "what the heyul" too. Fantastic.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)

ah kudzu, the backdrop to my YMCA baseball glory days

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

speaking of kudzu, as a kid in mississippi i recall there being a lot of media hype about it. how it came from japan and got dumped and it was going to swallow us all, kill our soybean crop, envelop whole buildings and whatnot. they'd always show grainy before-and-after pix of a car in a parking lot with kudzu nearby and then, just 1 week later, the car is nowhere to be seen! maybe it's just that it's not quite as prevalent in arkansas, on the west side of the river, but the hype and fear seems to have dissipated over the years.

andrew m., Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

they'd always show grainy before-and-after pix of a car in a parking lot with kudzu nearby and then, just 1 week later, the car is nowhere to be seen!

LOL

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

I love kudzu. Around here you can find stretches of highway where the kudzu is trying to grow across the road, and you just want to speed up going past it so it doesn't grab you and pull you in.

There's an unused section of railroad track at Ole Miss (under the bridge that the Natl. Guard crossed in '62 during the James Meredith showdown) that becomes a kudzu ocean in summer. There was an art student a few years ago who did an installation of aluminum dolphins leaping up out of it.

Rock Hardy, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

I only had an accent when talking to my dad; it was a child-of-divorce thing. I moved to Wichita KS at age 12 so any Texas accent faded.

Just in the past 6 months of living in CenTex have I begun to develop a Texan accent -- all the time living in Dallas and suburbs of H- town didn't really contribute (although yeah I've always used "y'all" and filling station and Coke=any sweet carbonated beverage)

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

rolling down a 100-yard roadside hill engulfed in kudzu always seemed appealing until i thought of what probably lied beneath. snakes, glass shards, whole cars, snakes, jagged aluminum lawn chairs, etc.

andrew m., Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

Recently I've had more and more encounters where 'coke' had to be explained/defined ("...and a small coke." "We don't have Coke - is Pepsi/RC ok?"). Maybe yankee invaders are at fault.

milo z, Thursday, 7 June 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

The land we're working on northwest of Austin is choked with mesquite and little cactus. Kudzu would be a major improvement.

nickalicious, Friday, 8 June 2007 14:22 (eighteen years ago)

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 14 June 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

suddenly i want to go to starlite

sunny successor, Friday, 15 June 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

Casino, no doubt. Although Adairs as a bar is better.

Ms Misery, Friday, 15 June 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

hey ya'll!

Ai Lien, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

I did a GIS for a Port of Call (NOLA) burger. No dice :(

will, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

hi ai lien!

sunny successor, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Ai Lien!

Ms Misery, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

I want those hamburgers

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

hi girls!

i thought it was going to be a slow afternoon, but it's my boss. he is being bossy.

Ai Lien, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

hello!

The new house looks directly on to the Hot fish and BBQ place across the street. Most excellent.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

i looked @ the CITY OF PANIC photo, since that is my window to outside world from my desk. is it gonna rain? i hope so. my plants are tired of city water.

Ai Lien, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:55 (eighteen years ago)

how do i look at that site, s.s.?

also, did beeps give dad any giffs?

Ai Lien, Monday, 18 June 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Shoes, a card, and a really cool hardcover photo book of the Beeps.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 June 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

Do you guys call her Beeps when you're talking to her, or do you use her name?

Rock Hardy, Monday, 18 June 2007 21:14 (eighteen years ago)

Beeps is her internet name.

I don't call my wife Sunny either, but I do warble that Bobby Hebb song to her occasionally.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 June 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

We actually call her a whole range of names at home: Beeps, Beats, Squids, Poop Pants etc

We're pretty convinced she is going to think her name is Veruca since she hears a whole lot of "Veruca, lay down!" "Veruca, be careful!" "Veruca, do you need to go out?" "Veruca, you're such a galoot!". There's a lot of dog reprimanding when you have a clumsy, curious, jealous great dane around a three month old.

The weather site AMD? I think its just linked from the channel 7(? katv) site.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

If I ever meet you guys I'm definitely calling you PP, Sunny and Beeps.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

major xpost: "wish the worst" a la the old 97s doesn't swear in it, does it? i don't remember it doing so.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

offhand I don't think so. . .(plays song in head). It's rather mean though.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:13 (eighteen years ago)

it is. i am thinking about playing it on my radio show. but it is mean. hmm. i shall debate this.

molly mummenschanz, Tuesday, 19 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

I still want to know why PP is in the hospital with big bags under his eyes.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

Perhaps it's a bit personal.

Ms Misery, Friday, 13 July 2007 15:31 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in the hospital right now. With my current sick humor, I thought it would be funny to break up the beach and picnic pictures with one of me here in the room. HAVE A NICE SUMMER!

Then you all had to add those kind words of concern. You just had to ruin my joke.

:-)

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:10 (eighteen years ago)

Feel better, dude! Quick recovery!

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)

Then you all had to add those kind words of concern. You just had to ruin my joke.

lol, ruined the fun of hospitalization. Ain't I a stinker.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Get well soon, guy!

James Redd and the Blecchs, Friday, 13 July 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

I am currently eating a hot fish sandwich from the tiny place across the street. It surpasses, in my opion, "The Crunkest Fish in Nashville." This is way better, and spicier, and at a cool 4 bucks, how can you go wrong?

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 16 July 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

so... hot... can't... take it

Keeping it in the 80s all the way through June was a cruel joke, God.

milo z, Monday, 16 July 2007 19:18 (eighteen years ago)

I had some flamin' cheetos for lunch. This was a mistake.

Avoiding outside as much as possible although I've been talked into hiking/tubing the greenbelt this weekend. Ugh.

Ms Misery, Monday, 16 July 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

There's some massive construction going on outside of my new place. It's really fucking hot here too. Should I offer the dudes who are digging a whole in my front yard some water? They have Gatorade, but I am not sure of construction dude etiquette.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 16 July 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

I think they should be prepared. This is their job.

Ms Misery, Monday, 16 July 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

Has anyone tried those Doritos that are yet to be named? X-360 or something? I think they should be called, "Schoolburger."

xpost: I know, but I want to be nice. They're fixing my plumbing.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 16 July 2007 19:22 (eighteen years ago)

Rain sucks. It rained here (Houston) again today. It rained yesterday, and the day before, and... I starting to forget what life was like when it wasn't raining.

C. Grisso/McCain, Monday, 16 July 2007 20:23 (eighteen years ago)

I hear the air-conditionin'
It's comin' thru the vents
And I ain't felt the sunshine
Since I don't know when.
I had an operation
So I wouldn't die
And now when I hear that A/C coolin'
I hang my head and sigh.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 16 July 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

I tried those X-itos this weekend. They struck me as very Worchestershire-y. With a flat finish. Sort of like a Dorito version of the Chex Mix Bold Party Blend, but without the media variety (corn and wheat chex, pretzels, bagel chips, etc.)

I doubt they will survive testing.

B.L.A.M., Monday, 16 July 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Are these the Doritos that won the caged wrestling match? Because my newspaper didn't cover any of that at all.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 16 July 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)

I think Nancy Reagan-approved ketchup, grade D ground beef, and some government cheese.

They're foul.

molly mummenschanz, Monday, 16 July 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

get well post-haste Unpleasant Pains, we still have to form and perfect our Hüsker Dü cover band before I bail on this state in a year or two

re: Chex: I got a free sample box of CHOCOLATE CHEX breakfast cereal with my Sunday paper last weekend. B+ would eat without milk again

iiiijjjj, Monday, 16 July 2007 22:59 (eighteen years ago)

Since I haven't had a true bath in a week, I've got the Grant Hart look down to a tee.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 16 July 2007 23:18 (eighteen years ago)

cool. those Chocolate Chex helped me round out my Bob belly

iiiijjjj, Monday, 16 July 2007 23:33 (eighteen years ago)

i am waist deep in homegrown tomatoes!

Ai Lien, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

:( please send me some.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

and me

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

tomatoes and green onions and zucchini. thanks, sis! i didn't know that if you let your zucchini keep growing it gets like a foot and a half long...

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 18 July 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm in love with the bus here. I wasn't able to take it before, as it's routes are pretty stupid, depending on where you live. New house has a bus stop RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET. And, it's free for me, as I work for big university. I also saw a dude with the BEST GRILLZ. HOORAY, BUS.

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

we've the worst transit system known. n little rock/ little rock

Ai Lien, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Tourists from all over flock downtown and wave at the empty trolley cars as they pass by.

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 19 July 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I live in Asheville NC now, ans they've got lots of tourists trolleys running around, but every time I see one it's like stuck in traffic in front of a Krystal Burger... what fun. And they're always packed!

wanko ergo sum, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

We too have the tourist trolleys. We also have these giant pink school buses for the "NashTrash Tour", where buxom women sit on your lap and call you "darlin'".

molly mummenschanz, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

riding the bus everyday sucks.

Ms Misery, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

So dark and scary in the house right now, at three p.m. Lots of thunder outside, windchimes banging...

I just hope my girls make it home before it gets too crazy out there.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

oh man, i miss southern summer thunderstorms something awful!

tehresa, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

Ice Cream trucks do not like it when you photograph them.

wanko ergo sum, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:14 (eighteen years ago)

hopefully that storm will hit us (and not be to bad for you and the fams, PP).

my sinuses are telling me a storm is coming. blurrrrgggh.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

urrrggggh. spelling. brain hurts.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:17 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha, I just said to J "It looks like it's 8:30 at night out there," and then sat down and opened this thread. Nice long soaker...the thunder is way off in the distance. I hope the Braves game isn't rained out, though.

Rock Hardy, Friday, 20 July 2007 20:45 (eighteen years ago)
