B/c I wanted a new Portland/PacNW thread, that's why.

Can anybody suggest a good yoga-for-beginners class around here? I've been told to check it out, so I need a place to look.

Also, if you're around on Sunday, head over to MacTarnahan's in NW for the PugCrawl, since a hundred pugs running about is usually something worth seeing.

kingfish, Monday, 14 May 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

hey can I be an honorary Eugene member of this thread?

right now I am in Peru but I fly back into PDX on July 3rd.

sleeve, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, you may. What's going on in Peru?

kingfish, Monday, 14 May 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to be in Portland for a couple of days in August.

What should I see?

Jill, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:44 (eighteen years ago)

Rose Garden, stuff on the Waterpark, various neighborhood parties

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to Portland this weekend. Which record store am I going to? You know, the one that's really awesome.

Bill in Chicago, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:12 (eighteen years ago)

get the store map at Powells front desk

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

When in Portland, be sure to meet some of our dogs. We have a boffo assortment of very personable dogs.

Aimless, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

dogs:Portland::cats:Seattle?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

Aimless, are you from around here?

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, hey. I just wanted to say that I visited Portland for the first time last Thanksgiving and it was fantastic. My wife still says that she would move there in a heartbeat (which we're not for now...but you never know).

admrl, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. I grew up near SE 26th Ave and Harrison Street. I've lived in or near P-town during all but my misspent college years. But these days I am a long, long way from making the scene. Too old, too married, and too far into the burbs.

Aimless, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:10 (eighteen years ago)

Ha ha, that means Gresham, right?

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

No. Lake Oswego. (Yeah. I know. But, in my case, knowing only that much is highly misleading.)

Aimless, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

Ooo, even better.

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

I know someone that lives in portland

RJG, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 17:52 (eighteen years ago)

Bill: Genuinely awesome record (vinyl only) store: Mississippi Records, on Mississippi.

Most extensive selection: Everyday Music, one branch on W. Burnside around NW 13th, another at NE 20th and Sandy.

Best curated selection: Jackpot Records, one branch on W. Burnside around SE 9th, another at SE 37th and Hawthorne.

Also, Yximalloo is playing here twice this weekend!

Douglas, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:26 (eighteen years ago)

I meant SW 9th, of course.

Douglas, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

I may move back from Brooklyn in a month or so. I need the NE. I need the coffee. I miss Magic Gardens.

bear, bear, bear, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think I finally went to the Magic Gardens a coupla months ago. Seemed a great place for the really drunk and about-to-be-hungover types. Of course, late night food in portland is fucked, so sometimes you NEED dim sum.

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

Hell, I'm playing on Friday if you're in town for it. EP release party for three bands.

Adam, where did you end up catching your "football" game?

Casuistry, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:53 (eighteen years ago)

dogs:Portland::cats:Seattle?

At least on the east side, we have more cats per square inch than I've seen in any neighborhood in Seattle. Out where Aimless lives, there are probably more dogs.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, I didn't. I had a nice cup of coffee and looked at thrift stores instead.

Also The Kennedy School was amazing. Detention Bar!

I wanted to smoke a cigar but did not as I was with my ho (as opposed to my bros).

admrl, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:56 (eighteen years ago)

Also no sales taxxxx! No self-service gas (if only I'd known this I could have avoided a quite embarassing scene).

admrl, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:58 (eighteen years ago)

That weird coffee place where people drink coffee....through straws!

admrl, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

Dutch BROTHERS

admrl, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:05 (eighteen years ago)

Another great record shop is EXILED, on Hawthorne: sweet selection of experimental/ drone/ folk/ outsider LPs in there (used and new) plus they've got the best Middle Eastern psychedelic selection I've seen anywhere (on disc and LP) -- it's even better than Amoeba or Aquarius.

But Douglas is right -- MISSISSIPPI is the best shop in town, also a great record label doing vinyl only releases that are pretty hard to find esp. now that Damon Albarn's shop in the UK, Honest Jon's, buys up half of whatever they make as soon as they're out. The Thai Orchestra one they just did is super great, kind of like gamelan meets 'Ethiopiques' with a bit of drumcore thrown in. Mississippi is sold out of that LP but Exiled has copies still, I think; it doesn't have a name or any text written in English, so just ask for the Thai Orchestra record. If you don't like it, I'll buy it back from you. (Full disclosure: I'm working with them on some projects that'll be out later this year OK).

More record shops: If you have some time on your hands, there's a big antique mall styled shop on Hawthorne across the street from Big Daddy's BBQ that I always forget the name of -- dozens of dealers all under one roof, really good for '60s rock and the occasional OJL blues LP. ANTHEM is a pretty good shop for new-ish alt-drone-metal stuff, I always find something at the weirdo punk-folk-country shop Q IS FOR CHOIR, if you like metal chek out 2ND AVe. RECORDS, and yeah the EVERYDAY MUSIC on Burnside is so big that they invariably get some good stuff. I myself am satisfied with just going to Exiled and Miss. (I've never liked JACKPOT, but that's just me.)

For my $$, this town also has a lot of great places to eat fresh/ local/ organic/ sort-of-gourmet type food for very little $$: VALENTINES, PROPER EATS, THE FARM, L'ASTRA, etc. There's also some really good Ethiopian food (DALOS being the cheapest and also the only one I know of with both brown rice and delicious shakes offered) and Japanese as well (SABUROS is amazing --large, fresh sushi cuts, very inexpensive-- and well worth the hour-long wait).

Coffee is kind of a big deal here. Thanks largely to the fact that Duane from STUMPTOWN has trained so many people and done so much to work directly with growers and pay them well above "fair trade," this town's crawling with awesome coffee plaes and baristas. You'll get a great shot at any of these places, ranked rougly in descending order: ALBINA PRESS, STUMPTOWN, FRESH POT, CREMA, TINYS, that new place in St Johns, and SOHBET. The Stumptown bean shop on Belmont has fresh cups made with a ridiculously expensive machine that are pretty out of this world, too.

And MAGIC GARDENS, for me, is the best strip club I've ever been to, even though a lot of my favorite people are no longer working there. It's usually got a decent male to female patron ratio (more a bar vibe than a gross/ sleazy one), there's no pole or anything, only two girls work per shift, the woman who runs the plae is super sweet and in her 60s at least, there is no cheesey dude announccing people and reminding you to tip, some of the dancers are actually my favorite DJs in town, and the best dumplings in town are right across the street at the GOLDEN HORSE, old shool Chinese place that's open until 11 or so. Yay.

Aimless, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

Everywhere is within walking distance if you have the time (and large water bodies aren't involved).

Andi Mags, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

that's crossroads. i've found some pretty good stuff for super-cheap there over the years.

hstencil, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:11 (eighteen years ago)

two weeks of horrid heat, made worse by the fact that nobody except movie theaters, powells, and only so many bars have A/C.

Everytime else is just great/perfect. Green trees, sunlight til 9-10pm, attractive people and other drunks out & about, riding bicycles, openly copulating on the riverfront park, etc.

kingfish, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 21:12 (eighteen years ago)

Please just reassure me that Hung Far Low is still there.

That's not the canonical sign.

Former ILXor Martin M. is also in PDX these days. (And in my band, for that matter.)

BTW hi Mike I've been to your house a bunch on account of tight friending with your roomates.

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 05:32 (eighteen years ago)

Went to the "Digital Democracy" panel thing at Acme tonight. David Sirota was in town, hosting it, and it was a pretty good time with some interesting ideas.

kingfish, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 05:45 (eighteen years ago)

Bear: Huh? You sure you mean me? Here a bunch? Ummm, when?

I have three roommates, one's my girl and the other two don't hang out that I know of -- in fact one of them's been away for a few months now, on tour.

Mike McGooney-gal, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah Mike. Christie lives there right? I came through on tour about a year ago, stayed in the attic that night and didn't leave town for months afterwards. Pretty sure that was your place. Could be totally off on that.
But seriously thread, I miss that city something fierce.

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Ohhh, that place?! I never really lived there for long -- it got sold right as I was in the process of moving in, which really was not so nice. Anyway, yeah, Kristy's rad and that awas a cool house! Close-in and cheap!

(Now I'm in northern NoPo, and we don't have too many visitors so I was just confused.) You're the Castanets guy, then? How's it going?

Mike McGooney-gal, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Mike, Douglas, thanks for the tips! Exiled sounds like exactly what I want. I've already been told to go to Saburos. I'm going to sneak out of my conference early one evening to check it out.

Bill in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

Don't forget to hit Ground Kontrol.

kingfish, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Kingfish try Yoga Shala on N Williams, I busted my yoga cherry there. Everyone's nice and the beginner classes are relaxed and unintimidating. Also easy to pop in and out of so you can find a class and instructor who work well for you.

goth casual, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

Dude, Ground Kontrol looks great and Strategy is DJing tomorrow night. I wish there was a place like this in Chicago. No, wait, it would be overrun by Big 10 frat guys and completely suck.

Bill in Chicago, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:49 (eighteen years ago)

Nah, Big 10 frat guys don't have much use for Discs of Tron.

kingfish, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

(which Ground Kontrol finally got, meaning that my bugging their on-duty guys for it paid off)

kingfish, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

Mike - good to see another North Portland person here. Are you in St. Johns then? I live just a few blocks off lombard, right up the street from the movie theater. Also great to see someone repping for the local businesses (James John Cafe and Proper Eats)... St. Johns also has one of the finest tacquarias in town in the back of the Santa Cruz panaderia.

ianinpdx, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

That would've been the place Mike and that would be me. Might be taking Yoni's studio this summer or back into Nick's (Kristy's boy, Shaky Hands) place in the NE. Maybe in two weeks or so. Stoked.

bear, bear, bear, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

Hey Ian -- I'm actually a few blocks from King Burrito, in-between Kenton and University Park. We're off Lombard too, just ten minutes drive or so from St Johns. Really like it up here a lot -- I've been in PDX three years and have only lived in NoPo, though. People who've lived here all their lives consider this area really far away.

It took me a few months living here to figure out that old school PDX-ers not only cling to ideas for what rent should be based on like what they were in 1989 (which makes sense -- I do the same thing for Bklyn, which is the main reason I no longer live there), but they basically think like a drunk when it comes to distance. Everything has to be within stumbling distance: work, friends, bar, etc. I moved here from Seattle though, where I got super used to being 20 minutes from downtown/ Cap Hill)...

Bear-- is Yoni going away again? I always just run into him when he's about to go on tour. great kid. Send me a note when you get into town please. And if yr here for Labor Day would you play the Halleluwah Fest pt 2???

Mike McGooney-gal, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:05 (eighteen years ago)

I almost started a Portland thread two days ago to ask about galleries but it looked like most aren't open during the week so I just rode around the city taking pictures instead.

Kerm, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:11 (eighteen years ago)

Is anybody else going to the Dino Jr show tomorrow?

kingfish, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:13 (eighteen years ago)

I'm going to Reno tomorrow. I saw the Joe McMurrian Quartet at the White Eagle last night. Then I got a Jetta hood slammed on my arm.

It went like this:

A friend of ours' Jetta's alarm system was malfunctioning, so I had to hold the hood sensors down while she started the car, and then I had to jerk my hands out of the way at the last moment when my buddy shut the hood, so:

My buddy: "Ok, I'm gonna go One, Two, Three, Drop"

Me, double-checking: "Wait, so One, Two, Three and then-"

*DROP*

The hood latched shut with my arms in the way. Good thing Jetta hoods are not very substantial.

Then we were going to go to the A-Crop on the way home but someone spoiled the fun by being too tired and having to work in the morning.

What should I do tomorrow before I have to leave for Reno at 4?

Kerm, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:29 (eighteen years ago)

Reno? For serious?

Casuistry, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

We're stopping in Eugene for din-din and then either crashing somewhere for the night, and then making Reno Friday.

Kerm, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

either

Kerm, Thursday, 17 May 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

Mike - Yeah I was worried about it being far out and isolated when we moved here but truthfully, with Rte. 30 and Columbia at our disposal it's pretty quick to get to most places in the city. It takes me 30 minutes by bus to get downtown which is just 5 minutes longer than when I was on 30th and Prescott - the distance is greater but I now bypass having to wind through slow city streets. I've become quite a St.Johns booster since moving here and kind of can't imagine living anywhere else in the city. There is a palpable sense that good things are happening up here. Good energy to grab onto.

ianinpdx, Thursday, 17 May 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

I love the St. John's record store, Vinyl Resting Place. Nice old folks run it. A v. good friend of mine has been living in that neighborhood for about a year, and yes Route 30 and Columbia get you downtown shockingly fast.

sleeve, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

i loved st. johns when i lived there. somebody could totally film a movie from the 5os or 60s there no problem

jergïns, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

i always find good stuff at vinyl resting place, yes. and being close to sauvie island is swell for all your inexpensive produce and nude beach needs!

Mike McGooney-gal, Thursday, 17 May 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

somebody could totally film a movie from the 5os or 60s there no problem

This is a little more difficult now that we have 4 coffee shops within three blocks of each other, but yes, as long as we have the Man's Shop and Patti's Home Plate, that 50's vibe will stay strong.

ianinpdx, Thursday, 17 May 2007 18:17 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks for the Hung Far Low pics! And love. Also, those pictures above are stunning. how blue can the sky be?

aimurchie, Thursday, 17 May 2007 20:08 (eighteen years ago)

Thanks. I pushed the color a little bit, but not a lot I don't think. I don't trust the monitor I'm using, so it's hard to know sometimes.

Kerm, Thursday, 17 May 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, PDX'rs, I need an update. I went undergrad in Portland and spent the last part of my time there in the bizarre Lad's edition. Way up Hawthorne there was a bar called The Watering Trough. I would like to know:

a) is it still there?
b) are tall boys of pbr still $1.35?
c) is pool still 25 cents?

(for the record, this was the case 5 years ago, not 1977) God damn, I loved that place!

Caledonia, Friday, 18 May 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't look like it. It's probably turned into a thousand other places since.

kingfish, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:20 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, god! that is so sad!

Caledonia, Friday, 18 May 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't the Watering Trough near Sewickly's? I could swear it's still around. I drive by there 3 times a week but have never noticed if it is gone or not.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

the sickly addiction!

jergïns, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

depends on the intersection its by. maybe it's been turned into Bar of the Gods by now or something.

kingfish, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

No, Bar of The Gods was a previously a bar called the Crow (not to be confused with the Crow Bar). It became the BOG around '96 or '97.

righteousmaelstrom, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

It's right by the Mt. Tabor, or Tabor or whatever it is, Bar. It was by BOG too. it's just a dark-ass hole in the wall. But the prices . . . ohhhh, the prices.

An old dude was playing keno there one afternoon. He had really bad eyesight and asked me to help him get money out of the cash machine. Then he sent over a beer for my troubles. The gambling was rather sad, but the beer was good.

Caledonia, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

RIght then, there ya go. We've eliminated that possibility, now what's the next one?

kingfish, Friday, 18 May 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

i think it's safe to say that cheap pbr's will be available as long as pdx exists, no? and i don't go to bars so i know nothing about that place, sorry -- though a web search says they had shuffleboard in there?! cool.

i was just thinking that another thing to love about this place is how (in part thanks to actual city planning) the "yuppies" tend to live in three areas, each of which might as well have a moat around them: the northwest 23/ 21st corridor, the pearl district condo city-states, and that south waterfront condo-land next to the base of the tram.

and yes, of course, we have a tram now. i've yet to ride it but it looks a little bit like the future. i need to take my nephew on it shortly...

Mike McGooney-gal, Friday, 18 May 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

We call that moat "the Willamette".

That mystery bar sounds familiar but it's been nearly 5 years since I've been in that boozey neck of the woods really.

Casuistry, Friday, 18 May 2007 20:48 (eighteen years ago)

Yuppies are now spreading to Irvington, parts of Mississippi, and Alberta

kingfish, Friday, 18 May 2007 21:28 (eighteen years ago)

If yuppies = white people with money, then you can pretty much count everything in the city limits, at this point.

darin, Friday, 18 May 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

No, not necessarily. I'm talking about the areas of a particular flavor of gentrification.

At any rate, for those who are around, head to Ash St Saloon tonight. Poison Idea is playing a free show, and one of the opening bands is Dead Moon's Fred & Toody doing the first show of their new group.

haha yeah the vicious class warfare between groups of white people in adjoining tax brackets is one of the things i miss least about portland.

best place to american shuffleboard: the black cat in sellwood.

goth casual, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:15 (eighteen years ago)

I like your fair city! Initial impressions:
1. Many restaurants, public places play this bizarre mix of lite jazz/muzak I haven't ever heard.
2. There are more strip clubs per capita than any place else I have ever been except for maybe New Orleans.
3. The homeless keep to themselves. I encountered well into the double digits today and not a single one asked me for change. This would never happen in Chicago.
4. A la the Chris Rock routine, unlike every other city in America, MLK Blvd here is not sketchy--well, at least the parts I've been on.

Bill in Chicago, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

I think I might be at my free show tonight at Langano instead. We might be the last band to ever play there! I feel like the kiss of death for nice small clubs.

Casuistry, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:20 (eighteen years ago)

Noctural, we hardly knew ye, but at least we got to play in ye just before you stopped doing shows.

Casuistry, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:21 (eighteen years ago)

Red & Black, I remember you telling us our show was going to be the last "full band" show you were going to have. I can't imagine that you stuck with that, but it was an honor to be told we'd be the last "full band" to play there.

Casuistry, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:23 (eighteen years ago)

If the Towne Lounge ever books us they are doomed.

Casuistry, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:24 (eighteen years ago)

my roommate books the towne lounge (i think she still does anyway) so i'll warn her, okay.

Mike McGooney-gal, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:45 (eighteen years ago)

Yes. I met her once a million years ago when I played a show at a previous venue that she booked, but there is no way she'd remember me.

Also, this is a smallish town sometimes. Not necessarily in a bad way.

Casuistry, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:53 (eighteen years ago)

yeah it took me about a week living here to figure that out. sometimes it's a good reason to go out -- running into lots of people -- and lots of times it's as good a reason (for me anyway) to just stay home, knowmsayin?

Mike McGooney-gal, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:55 (eighteen years ago)

and if i were to go out tonight i'd most certainly go see the new dead moon people's "punkier" band, am fairly sure that'll be great.

Mike McGooney-gal, Saturday, 19 May 2007 01:59 (eighteen years ago)

Got back from wandering around downtown. the line for ash street was around the block, and still there 1.5 hours later, so we went to Ground Kontrol/the Shanghai Tunnel instead. A couple of pushers tried to offer their wares as we wandered off to the car, which was funny in that i haven't had that happen before, and there was a cop car about 10 yards away.

kingfish, Saturday, 19 May 2007 07:33 (eighteen years ago)

Aimless, Saturday, 19 May 2007 17:53 (eighteen years ago)

Casuistry, Saturday, 19 May 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

A genuine Car 54 reference would have been officer Tooty.

Aimless, Sunday, 20 May 2007 04:12 (eighteen years ago)

Well, that's what I was thinking, but...

Also, apparently: "Toody". Who knew?

Casuistry, Sunday, 20 May 2007 10:08 (eighteen years ago)

I did, suprisingly. Damn my nick at nite-centric youth.

kingfish, Sunday, 20 May 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

I imbibed Car 54 from the pure source - as a network series -- wa-a-a-y back when it was still possible for Khruschev to land at Idlewyld (soon to be renamed JFK). Likewise, I was present when Dobie Gillis first hobnobbed with Maynard G. Krebs. Behold my hoary locks and kowtow lowly to my elderwit!

Well, whaddayaknow, it seems that our esteemed Republican senator and Senate Majority Leader is in portland today, and hidden Bothan spies found out the where & when:

Just wanted to give you a quick heads-up. In just a few hours, there's a group of Oregon Democrats and folks from Veterans in Action that are gathering to "welcome" Senator Gordon Smith and Senator Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) when they arrive at a fancy-pants $1000 fundraiser.

Here's the best part. The fundraiser is on a boat in the Willamette -- and we've figured out what time they're departing.

It'd be fabulous if you could join the crew. Here's the story: At 4:30 p.m., folks are gathering at the corner of SE Water and SE Caruthers. Here's a map. From there, the group will walk one block to the boat dock.

We're expecting press. Should be fun.

today i went and got 5 gallons of paint for the price of 2 at metro paint (all recycled/ city-run non-profit paint that goes on real thick) and also scored some amazing stuff from vinyl resting place, including all 3 volumes of the harry smith anthology in real nice shape (and they're the 1952 originals, even) at half what they'd be anywhere else.

so it's fair to say i'm in super consumer love with pdx today. yay.

Eazy, Saturday, 29 March 2008 07:44 (seventeen years ago)

I sometimes forget there are strip clubs aside from Magic Gardens here.

And what the fuck was up today -- went from snow to sun to hail to sun to rain to just plain cold.

I fully expect raining frogs tomorrow.

Mike McGooney-gal, Saturday, 29 March 2008 08:00 (seventeen years ago)

That is equinoctial weather around here.

Hail is a common feature in March. Also rainbows. We get these cold fronts from the Gulf of Alaska. After the cold rain comes through, the aftermath is all this freaky unsettled sun-hail-rain stuff. The snow was a little unusual, I must say.

Aimless, Saturday, 29 March 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Portland I was in you yesterday as well in an attempt to get onto Jeopardy!. You are still my favorite town even when you snow at times, which is not pleasant.

Son of a bitch my new employee orientation got cancelled today cuz of the weather, another week without a paycheck.

Seriously PDX you know I love you but way to be a whiny little bitch just cuz of a few inches of snow.

en i see kay, Monday, 15 December 2008 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

They probably could have started it late, but chose not to hassle with it. Sorry about the paycheck drought.

Srsly though, it's unfair to compare Portland's snow situation with places where snow is common all winter. The city doesn't have many snowplows or sand trucks, because it would be a waste of money to invest much there. It is illegal to use salt on the roads in Oregon. The drivers are largely dolts in snow, because they have no experience in it, plus few of them own chains or snow tires, and they think their SUV is a magic snow machine.

Lastly, and most importantly, the snow here falls wet, packs down quickly, refreezes at night, and is more like glare ice than anything a Midwesterner would call snow. It is a bitch to drive on, especially where there is any kind of a hill - and there are lots of hills.

You put all this together and 3 inches of snow is a lot worse than it sounds.

Aimless, Monday, 15 December 2008 17:15 (sixteen years ago)

Usually the max stays up unless there's enough ice to freeze over the lines, iirc.

xpost, guess i'm wrong on that one.

Clay, Sunday, 21 December 2008 02:16 (sixteen years ago)

I'm close enough to downtown that I figure if I do lose power (which I never have at this apartment) it will be restored quickly. I doubt the city likes downtown going off-grid even briefly.

Clay, Sunday, 21 December 2008 02:17 (sixteen years ago)

good news everyone! the buick can get around in this mess!

so after testing the car up & down the street a bit, i found my iphone power cable. Both main and black & decker auxiliary batteries for the iphone are now at full charge, so i'm set.

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Sunday, 21 December 2008 03:03 (sixteen years ago)

The ice has arrived. We lost power for about 5 hours this a.m. It came back about 30 minutes ago. It could go out again pretty easily. Luckily our house has a fireplace and we have wood. Because we camp a lot, we have all the stuff we need to camp out at the house, if necessary. We've done it before. We even have a kerosene heater.

I hope kingfish didn't stay out too late last night.

Aimless, Sunday, 21 December 2008 19:30 (sixteen years ago)

Good day for a walk. Bad day for motorcycling. Stay warm.

Aimless, Sunday, 21 December 2008 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

kgw is saying another 1/3rd inch of ice today then 4-6 more inches of snow tonight. City's basically a wasteland until Saturday. The shit Greyhound is pulling with their cancellations/way they're treating the people they've stranded is totally disgusting.

My girlfriend was supposed to fly out to Chicago to see her family today. Flight was canceled, and they rescheduled her tomorrow... in Seattle. With no trains available and Greyhound shut down. A++, everybody.

The good spirits of Portlanders helping one another out has been uplifting, though. Hope you're all warm and well.

Clay, Sunday, 21 December 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

Seattle just cancelled a whole bunch of flights right now. I imagine PDX would be in BETTER shape. SeaTac is not a happy place right now.

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Monday, 22 December 2008 02:03 (sixteen years ago)

daaaamn and I was feeling sorry for myself cuz it is summer solstice here in Peru, in the upper 50's at night and pouring down rain. I will now feel better. I imagine Eugene is almost as fucked as PDX. I had read in the Farmer's Almanac that it would be a cold winter, but this is almost unheard of.

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Monday, 22 December 2008 03:45 (sixteen years ago)

Eugene isn't bad. 40 and raining. Blazers had to take a bus down there to make it to Denver for tomorrow's game.

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Monday, 22 December 2008 18:34 (sixteen years ago)

You all think Lake Oswego is big enough to get the "Lake Effect"?

We've got more than a foot of snow piled up here. Another 4 inches fell on top of yesterday's ice. Yesterday's ice was on top of about 8-9 inches of accumulated snow. All the shrubs in the yard are kissing their toes. But I still have electricity, and a cellar full of food, so I am golden.

Aimless, Monday, 22 December 2008 19:54 (sixteen years ago)

Hooray! I made it home! Found out that the chains I had borrowed were too big and i needed a push to get out of the snowbank I was parked in, but it worked!

now i need ot figure out how the hell i'm going to fly out of here.

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Monday, 22 December 2008 23:07 (sixteen years ago)

I was pretty gung ho about driving in this snow until 2 days ago when I very nearly didn't make it up the hill between SE Burnside and Stark on 60th.

I had plenty of momentum but the knob in front of me hesitated after the light turned green and I slid backwards 3 times. Finally put some Opeth on the Vanagon's stereo and made it to the apex on my 4th try.

Since then, I've just been cooking and building fires and staying inside.

Nate Carson, Monday, 22 December 2008 23:44 (sixteen years ago)

Okay, flight was canceled, am now waitlisted for next flight later in morning. This ought to be interesting, but i'm bringing my laptop and iphone(w/ aux batteries), so i should be set.

Vault Boy Bobblehead - Drinking (kingfish), Tuesday, 23 December 2008 06:26 (sixteen years ago)

Woo-hoo! Made my flight and the one afterwards(standing around by the desk = the most literal "standby" i've done in a while). Managed to escape the city and am here at parents house in Knoxville. Whee.

1000 different versions of 'FUCK YOU / GOT MINE' on placards, held up by suburbanites, chanting either USA or 'Our Voice will be heard,' b/c holding your demo in a city that voting overwhelming for the democrats in power and turned out for Obama to the tune of 75K in May makes obvious sense.

KPAM was there to provide rightwing vitriol and a PA.

Handful of counter-protestors, but the whole vibe was horrible so I had to relocate to the Low Brow for booze and to play with the new wireless toy here.

Photos to come. These people are pathetic & infantile.

Jesus Christ. We finally have warm days here and what happens? Some lady goes shopping at Bridgeport Village and leaves her pug in her SUV. Oh, but she leaves the window cracked a few inches!

The results were predictable, and here's the kicker:

She then covered the dog with a carpet and went back to the store.

Well, 39th Avenue is now officially Cesar Chavez Blvd!

Glad to see we have our priorities straight. Unemployment is at 12.4, second in the nation. And we have the added perk of having the 25th worse traffic in the United States.

Thanks Portland!

cank sunny ade (The Reverend), Sunday, 12 July 2009 07:46 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah dude. Portland is great. I've lived here most of my life and have a hot and cold relationship with the town, but today I officiated an old friend's wedding, dj'd the reception, drank rad beer at the afterparty, then came home and walked to this amazing Korean taco truck in my neighborhood ($2 bulgogi tacos!) and am now drinking more awesome beer in my favorite bar. Good day that couldn't happen for me anywhere else.

Turkoglu & Love Affair (Clay), Sunday, 12 July 2009 08:19 (fifteen years ago)

I guess that's less to do with pdx and more me bein' like hell yeah life occassionally surprises you by being fuckin awesome but it's as good an argument as I can muster: sure, come to Portland because I had a great day.

tehresa, Sunday, 12 July 2009 08:26 (fifteen years ago)

I was planning on getting a job lined up before leaving. Thinking I want to get some interviews lined up for next week. That would be a good time to go down there.

So where do I want to live? Where do I not want to live? How's the weather compare to Seattle?

(don't you worry tza, I'll only be a few hours away)

cank sunny ade (The Reverend), Sunday, 12 July 2009 09:32 (fifteen years ago)

J0rd D. (velko), Sunday, 12 July 2009 09:42 (fifteen years ago)

Rev - definitely get a job lined up first. If you have one, it's the best city you could hope to live in.

Are you in Seattle now? What neighborhood? Do you like it? That will help me recommend where you want to live here.

Blindly, I'll suggest SE (west of 39th and north of Powell) or North Portland in the Mississippi area. Fuck living on the west side.

Nate Carson, Sunday, 12 July 2009 10:23 (fifteen years ago)

I live in lolEverett, 25 miles north of Seattle. I do not like it.

I'm lol drunk excuse me.

Turkoglu & Love Affair (Clay), Sunday, 12 July 2009 11:55 (fifteen years ago)

Move to Portland?

On the plus side:

It is a real city and it is a mostly very pleasant place. This is not a combination you find very often. The climate is moderate, never too cold and only rarely hot. You can drive to Mt Hood, the Columbia River gorge, or numerous ocean beaches, spend the day there, and drive home to sleep in your own bed that same night. Good restaurants. Powell's City of Books. Active local music scene. Trees everywhere.

On the minus side:

Unemployment is just a bit behind Detroit and ahead of almost anywhere else you can name. You rarely see the sun from November to April. Second rate museums, library and other high-culture amenities. Enough like a small town that you can't avoid meeting the same people wherever you go - even people you loathe. Go back and read the first "minus" again; let it sink in.

Aimless, Sunday, 12 July 2009 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

Aimless speaks the truth. Our museum is second rate at best. But we do have OMSI!

Nate Carson, Sunday, 12 July 2009 19:51 (fifteen years ago)

I love it here, just wish I could find a job.

kingfish, Monday, 13 July 2009 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

fwiw, I have a rather specialized skill set (tap dance instruction) that a few ppl in the PDX area seem to be looking for (in contrast to Seattle) at the moment. That's what drew my attention in the first place. Most of the stuff Aimless describes is either a non-factor (lol when does my uncultured ass ever go to a museum? does anyone in the active Portland music scene make music I'd be interested in? I have my doubts) or pretty much the same as Seattle so

cank sunny ade (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 02:10 (fifteen years ago)

More than likely there are people around here who make tunes you'd dig.

kingfish, Monday, 13 July 2009 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

So my brother-in-law called my wife tonight with a crazy story. He was walking home through downtown and ran into a guy who said he was from Burkina Faso, and was in Portland to settle an insurance claim for his brother who died in a plane crash (which my b-i-l had heard about). Guy was allegedly on his way out of the country, couldn't bring the money, and was waiting for an airport limo that was about to pick him up. He wanted to give him $30,000 to give to a homeless shelter and keep $2k for himself. They were sitting a coffeeshop somewhere, the guy showed him a huge stack of money, and refused to take a business card or any personal info - he just wanted the money donated in his name. Wrapped the money up, said some incantation, gave a name and address in Burkina Faso, and asked him not to open it for 8 hours before getting into a limo and driving away.

Brother-in-law gets back to his apartment, super suspicious, starts wigging out, and IMs my wife, we're trying to figure out what was going on, debating if he should talk to a lawyer, the cops, or just stress that some random gangsters bust into his place at 4am looking for their money. He goes out for a smoke, can't take it anymore, opens the bag...and finds a big stack of newspaper. Checks his shit, isn't missing wallet, phone, laptop, anything at all.

Anybody heard of anything like this before? A test run for some sort of scam, I presume, like a real-life 409 scam? Did my brother in law give off some clue that he wasn't going to actually get scammed out of money and the guy cut it short? Dudes's pretty savvy, has traveled quite a bit, is really smart, and isn't the type of guy to fall for anything obviously flakey so we're all wondering, what was the point?

joygoat, Monday, 13 July 2009 05:41 (fifteen years ago)

i don't even know what to do with this.

louis & cank: the new adventures of suggestban (The Reverend), Monday, 13 July 2009 07:47 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah the whole thing is very odd, and nobody can figure out the point. Best guess is that there's a step missing where the guy gets you to wire money to him or hit the ATM or otherwise gets money from someone, which for whatever reason he didn't pull on my brother-in-law because he didn't seem like he'd have money or wasn't gullible enough. I was just curious if real life Nigerian money scams are the new thing in Portland.

This happened to my sister about 20 years ago, except the woman with the stack of money claimed to not trust banks (they were thieves, in her country) and had my (incredibly naive) sister show her that she could take out as much $$ from her account as she wanted. After my sister withdrew a significant sum from her bank account, the woman wanted to wrap it up with her own money in a special cloth, cast a spell over it, and then gave the package back to my sister for safe-keeping until the next day. (IIRC, some guy claiming to be the woman's relative showed up at this point with some sort of family emergency claim.) Of course when my sister finally unwrapped the package it was nothing but newspaper. So it's a scam that's been around a long time, but maybe the guy your BIL ran into forgot the part about the matching funds.

Jaq, Monday, 13 July 2009 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

on the bright side, now your b-i-l has a bunch of free newspaper

Not sure if it was a typical winter here in PDX (everyone says it wasn't), but I think I'll be moving back to Tampa again soon, lol.

They need some sort of Bearded Trust Fund Casualty sign on that part of town. It's Height-Ashbury for tourist retards and they peel up a new Reed student off the ground like every other day over there.

Sunday nights at Beulahland has music videos by request after 8 or so. It's pretty much a DIY 120 Minutes/Headbanger's Ball. I try to go there weekly, and it's a blast.

Meanwhile, my experiment of trying to cool my bedroom down with two box fans facing opposite ways in different windows seems to have worked.

That Portland/Oakland thing is funny, since from time to time in Oakland I'm struck by how much it reminds me of of Portland. Berkeley and parts of Seattle factor into this as well.
Also, had breakfast at Gravy a couple years back and it was good, but the most unforgettable part was that it took like an hour and a half to be served!

Never been to any of them but my brother-in-law seems to always be DJing at some club somewhere when he's not a philosophy professor at other places. I know he veers pretty heavy towards hip-hop rather than straight up dance:

hip-hop's not really my dancing choice, but thanks for the suggestion. may look at the list of clubs he spins at and see if they have other, more electronic-dancey nights

W i l l, Monday, 24 August 2009 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

holocene is the first best choice for dance music, depending what's going on. also check a night called Nightclubbing (i think their myspace has the most up-to-date info). they do it at various venues, might be a monthly.

Nate Carson, Friday, 11 September 2009 07:54 (fifteen years ago)

57th/Sandy looks like somewhere from which it would be a pain in the ass to get to downtown Vancouver by public trans.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Friday, 11 September 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah, if you're commuting to Vancouver then North Portland is def. the way to go. I haven't spent a lot of time up there, but I looked at renting house a few months ago that was cheap and really cool about 5 blocks from the center of the little Mississippi neighborhood. It seems like a really nice place to live.

If you don't already have one, get a bike, it's soooo silly to live in city with such great capacity for biking and never use it. I'm not trying to push you to become hardcore biker dude commuting across the Columbia (even though it's only five miles) but if just to run out and do errands and explore, bike is u+k.

Yeah, do whatever you can to fix your bike; once you do that, you can get around the city with ease

kingfish, Friday, 11 September 2009 19:22 (fifteen years ago)

Can't stress that enough. Portland is uniquely suited to biking, in some ways because it is ill-suited to other forms of transit: driving sucks a lot, things are just a bit too spread out for walking, and transit is good but not excellent.

I didn't realize this at first and spent a few months trapsing around waiting way too long for bus transfers on trips that would have taken ten minutes to leisurely ride.

Are we talking St. John's and the fifth quadrant proper, or like Mississippi/Alberta? Both are awesome in their own ways. I'd live in Mississippi if I'd found a place. St. John's is v cool, but difficult to travel from to SE and other normally pertinent areas. I'd happily live there if I only rarely had to go west/southeast.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 08:17 (fifteen years ago)

St Johns looks far outside of walking distance from the yellow line, which is the most important thing. Mississippi looks like a good location. In what ways is it awesome? The areas north and northwest of there would work, too.

super-gay-crazy bitch-made devil-racist beast-mode swag (The Reverend), Wednesday, 16 September 2009 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

I think Mississippi (haven't actually spent that much time up there, but did look at living there) is at that point in a neighborhood's development where there are shops and bars and restaurants but it's still mostly people who live close whom you'll see on a daily basis. Not that that's such a huge thing, it just feels very neighborhood-y. Housing also cheaper, I looked at a 2-bedroom house for $900 that, if I'd faxed in the application 2hrs earlier, I'd be living in right now.

ENERGY FOOD (en i see kay), Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:11 (fifteen years ago)

Fuck, I just got my first speeding ticket ever on the way home from Astoria. It was on that fraction of the roadway right in Clatskanie where the limit halves, then goes back to normal over the course of like less than a mile.

kingfish, Thursday, 17 September 2009 00:50 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, I don't post here much, but since I live in the Mississippi area, thought I'd respond. I've lived up here for about a year now (used to live further out in NE), and it's really a great place to live. A lot of cheap food (there's a block of food carts just going in this month), good bars, parks, etc.

In terms of the areas directly adjacent to the yellow line, it kinda seems like the one with the most urban neighborhood-y feel; the areas to the north of it (Piedmont, Kenton) are more straight residential, I think mostly families living there.

I'll second the recommendation to get your bike working here as soon as you can. Trimet connects NoPo pretty well to downtown, but not as well to other parts of the eastside. Before I started biking most everywhere, I often would have to take the bus downtown, transfer, and come back across the river to get to where I was going.

Ari (whenuweremine), Thursday, 17 September 2009 01:00 (fifteen years ago)

As of right now, I don't really have anywhere I need to go except for Vancouver, Downtown, and maybe the occasional trip to Southwest. Of course this is all contingent on my employment situation and how that changes. Hopefully I can get a bit of exploring done tomorrow.

xp Clatskanie is an incorporated city. Small towns like that are notorious for speed traps.

Might have a job, might not have a roof. :/

The Reverend, Saturday, 19 September 2009 06:29 (fifteen years ago)

Totally a better and less common situation than the converse. If you need any practical housing finding advice, I am a recent expert, feel free to webmail.

And for the record, any newcomer PDX ilxor has a standing offer from me for a night's free beers in the event of a Portland FAP.

The snow's piling up here, just south of P-town. Today's offical forecast: afternoon rain and a high temp of 40.

Aimless, Tuesday, 29 December 2009 23:32 (fifteen years ago)

Took me 1.5 hours to get back to NE from the Lego Store at Wash SQ.

Currently on a way-off-course #9 bus heading south on MLK, which is cool since it will take me straight by the Low Brow.

kingfish, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 01:33 (fifteen years ago)

Nate Carson, Wednesday, 30 December 2009 04:37 (fifteen years ago)

Also, people in this town need to learn how to drive in snow, or stay home. I had to do a lot of illegal passing to get to my house because all these stooges were stuck on a hill. Stay home retards!

I think people were more trying to get home, but yeah, totally agree about Portland's inability to drive in very little snow and I've lived here for 20 years! People around here don't even know how to drive in the rain anymore.

Portland, I'm planning a trip in the summer. Is the weather better in July or August generally? I'm coming from DC so don't mind if it's cool as it'll be a nice break from the swamp-pit, but if there's any way to minimise the rain risk...

ljubljana, Monday, 1 March 2010 03:21 (fifteen years ago)

August is a bit better, as the week- to two-week-long heat wave hits in July

Sex Sexual (kingfish), Monday, 1 March 2010 03:25 (fifteen years ago)

Both July and August tend to hover in the 80s, occasionally tipping into the 90s. Summer out here just isn't as mild as it used to be imo. There's pretty much no risk of rain from late May until early September.

Clay, Monday, 1 March 2010 03:26 (fifteen years ago)

That'll count as mild for those of us escaping from here, but will still go for August - thanks. I'll be back with more stupid questions later...

ljubljana, Monday, 1 March 2010 03:36 (fifteen years ago)

As a lifelong Portland resident since 1954, I can tell you with complete assurance that the weather here is a crapshoot. But, if you wish to play the odds, the least odds of soggy weather would fall in the last week of July and first two weeks of August. However, anything after July 4 and before Sept 1 is likely to be quite acceptable.

We do get the occasional spell in the low 100s or upper 90s, but the low 80s are the norm throughout both July and August.

If you want to fall in love with the place, manage to arrive in mid-September when the weather gods are smiling on us. We have been known to achieve perfection at such a time.

Hello Portlandians! (I live outside Portland, ME, so have to differentiate from the local Portlanders) I'm making my first trip to your fair city over Memorial Day weekend - any suggestions of places to go, things to do, where to eat? It's a combo vacation/scouting trip for possible move, so a mix of touristy and not touristy would be cool. Also, I wouldn't mind meeting people for a beer or coffee, if anyone's interested.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 13:19 (fifteen years ago)

Memorial Day weekend? It will rain.

Extra socks - check.
Rain expected - check.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 16:54 (fifteen years ago)

Seriously though, where in town will you be staying?

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 16:59 (fifteen years ago)

We're renting a little garden apartment on NE 15th. I understand this is Irvington - a few blocks north of the Lloyd Center.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 17:03 (fifteen years ago)

It is indeed Irvington. There are a ton of shops and restaurants near there on Broadway but it is a little more upscale than some other areas. Not Pearl District upscale, but more than other areas.

I think any one of us could send you to any different number of places -- what is it that you are looking to do or are interested in doing?

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 17:20 (fifteen years ago)

Like I said, I've never been there, and am open to everything. Not interested in going to the Rose Festival, but I'm hoping to get a feel for the city to see if it is somewhere my wife and I might want to relocate. So places to eat, arts locales (my wife is a fiber artist), and cool neighborhoods that might be nice to live in. I like just walking around with no particular plan, but any tips as to where I should wander would be great. Any "must dos" if I may never be back again?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 17:30 (fifteen years ago)

if i were going to walk someone around i'd choose these streets:

alberta
mississippi
belmont (20th-39th)
burnside (river to 28th)
should probably walk 21st/23rd (burnside north) though all the eastside streets mentioned above are more interesting

con-ni (rahni), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 17:40 (fifteen years ago)

Ok. To help you get around, here is a quick primer on how the city is laid out. For the most part the city is divided into 4 sections. Burnside demarcates north and south. The Willamette river demarcates east and west. On the west side of town, the streets are alphabetical going north starting with Ankeny, Burnside, Couch (pronounced 'cooch'), etc. The same thing works on the eastside but more sporadically.

If you stay on the eastside, especially SE, Cesar Chavez (r.i.p. 39th Ave) is your friend.

Some of the neighborhoods I would check out are Hawthorne, pockets of inner Division, Alberta in NE.

Obviously you will need to go to Powell's. Also, if the weather is in fact nice check out Mt. Tabor park.

Places to eat:
Lucky Strike
Pok Pok
Screen Door
Any place that starts with the word "Pho"

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 18:01 (fifteen years ago)

One place I forgot to mention if you want to spend a bit more dough for dinner is Le Pigeon. Spendy, but worth it.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 18:03 (fifteen years ago)

Pok Pok

otm

con-ni (rahni), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 18:07 (fifteen years ago)

Everyone recommends Pok Pok! It's the only "must eat" thus far.

Thanks for neighborhood tips - I'm taking notes. Please, keep it coming, and if anyone wants a coffee or beer let me know.

Speaking of beer; I know Portland is microbrew endowed - anywhere I need to go? surprisingly, one of the local spots here in the other Portland had a Rogue Imperial Porter on tap this past weekend - mighty fine stuff.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 18:15 (fifteen years ago)

Oh weird, I'll be in PDX over Memorial Day weekend as well.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 18:24 (fifteen years ago)

Pok Pok looks awesome, btw. I'm also hoping to hit up some food carts.

And I'm very much excited about all the craft breweries, though I think my girlfriend and I were also thinking of checking out the annual Memorial Day festival in wine country.

jaymc, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 18:27 (fifteen years ago)

I dig Belmont Station (on Stark & 45th, in SE) as a beer store, they generally have good stuff on tap and tons of stuff for sale. There's also a huge Henry's Tavern on Burnside in the Pearl that's kind of not the best atmosphere but they have a crazy number of beers. It's right by Powell's, where anyone who visits Portland should check out at some point. I think there's a Rogue public house nearby but I've never been to that.

I don't live there, just visit a lot. There are tons of great places to eat - I really dug Red Onion for Thai last time I was there, Clyde Common was really good, Pok Pok is good, Toro Bravo, Indish on 21st near Everett is great, Screendoor, Bunk Sandwiches, and I have a huge list of other places that I've heard good things about but haven't gotten to yet.

Basically I love just roaming around a lot of the neighborhoods listed above. There really isn't anything all that exciting and one-of-a-kind there in terms of tourist stuff, but I love roaming around, eating, getting a beer or coffee (Coffeehouse Northwest on Burnside is my brother-in-law's hangout and the dudes are huge nerds) or good bakery, people watching, and so on.

joygoat, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

Koi Fusion and Potato Champion are the number one can't miss food carts. There's so many worth investigating and really I can't even remember most of their names/locations.

Yeah Portland is mostly a find a place to hang out and just hang out sort of city. Walk around. You'll find stuff you like. I'm sure several of us would love to meet up for drinks and etc too!

sandwich-american (Clay), Wednesday, 28 April 2010 20:11 (fifteen years ago)

To echo what everyone else is saying, yeah it is super easy to roam around. Likely has to do with the blocks being small and the lack of sprawl. So, just get in your car -- or take Tri-Met -- to wherever you want to go and just get out and walk around.

Oh, and one more thing: Portlanders are crazy about going out for breakfast/brunch. Unless you go early or really late, be prepared to wait for up to an hour if you go to one of the more popular spots.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 28 April 2010 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

Speaking of beer; I know Portland is microbrew endowed - anywhere I need to go?

Hopworks on Powell has some great microbrews.

If your wife is interested in the local art scene, I would definitely check out the Alberta area and some pockets of downtown - tons of galleries in these spots.

Don Homer, I have baked a special donut just-a for you (kingfish), Wednesday, 19 May 2010 08:09 (fifteen years ago)

Wonder how Adams taking the Police Bureau from Saltzman may have garnered some sympathy votes. Probably didn't matter though -- no one ran a strong race against him.

righteousmaelstrom, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

Did anyone see the republican debate on the local news a few weeks ago? Hilarious! If I wasn't registered as a Democrat I would have voted for the nutjob who wanted to make everyone live in domes and put stop signs everywhere. He was awesome.

Darin, Wednesday, 19 May 2010 16:42 (fifteen years ago)

ha, who was this?

kitz brings pretty much nothing to the table. obv, I'll vote for him, but I strongly doubt I'll campaign for him like I was doing for bradbury.

The Reverend, Thursday, 20 May 2010 04:39 (fifteen years ago)

I can't remember the guy's name, but I tried googleing him the following day and he was totally "off the grid" as it were. They must have just let him out for that single event. He also had some unconventional ideas involving making everyone house in the U.S. worth exactly $5,000. What a character!

Great weather for pho, but not much else, except maybe ducks. My favorite is Pho Hung. Go to the location on Powell. It's suitably divey and the pho is better there than the other location on 82nd.

Thanks for the pho tips and whoa is this some dismal weather. On the upside, it's kind of cute how Frontier Airlines has a different animal on the tailfin of each aircraft.

Are there any good hotels in the downtown area that are less upscale than places like the Ace? Looking at taking five days and going to a Timbers game in late August, but Ace/Mark Spencer/Deluxe/etc. are out of my budget.

bill magill (milo z), Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:43 (thirteen years ago)

milo you could try the Jupiter which is just across the burnside bridge from downtown (20-25 minute walk to Timbers) and attached to the Doug Fir which may have a show you'd want to see or the Travelodge across the street from it (both on Burnside) if you're looking to go even cheaper. Interstate (along the Max Line which wld take you straight to the stadium) has dozens of v cheap no-name motels with varying degrees of seediness but there's not much to see up there even if is convenient for getting into the city

bear, bear, bear, Tuesday, 19 July 2011 20:53 (thirteen years ago)

there's a best western at 23rd and vaughn, I believe. That's walking distance from jeld-win field. and a travelodge (I think) up by PSU which would give you plenty of options for getting around.

All that said, I'd suggest the Jupiter.

oh for FUCKS sake. two fucking 22-year-olds from Gresham and Medford went wandering about Sellwood openly carrying their assualt rifles(doesn't mention if they were actual Bushmasters or not), causing normal people to freak out and at least one school to go into lockdown.

Police say no crime committed by men strolling through SE Portland neighborhood with assault rifles

By Everton Bailey Jr., The Oregonian
on January 09, 2013 at 5:02 PM, updated January 09, 2013 at 8:00 PM Print

Police say two men who were openly carrying assault rifles in Southeast Portland’s Sellwood neighborhood Wednesday were trying to demonstrate their Second Amendment rights and “educate the public”.

And while their actions were legal, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman said such a demonstration can divert officers away from possibly more urgent emergency calls.

It can also frighten people.

Steven M. Boyce, of Gresham, and Warren R. Drouin, of Medford, both 22, were spotted by officers about 1:50 p.m. near Southeast Seventh Avenue and Spokane Street.

But both have concealed handgun licenses, said Sgt. Pete Simpson, a Portland Police Bureau spokesman. They were not arrested because the rifles remained slung over their shoulders, he added.

Officers warned the duo that the sight of their rifles would generate 9-1-1 calls, but neither man seemed concerned, Simpson said. No shots were fired.

ORS 166.173 gives Oregon cities the authority to regulate possession of loaded firearms in public places. Portland is one of several cities that have imposed such a ban. However, people who have concealed handgun licenses are exempt from that regulation under that same law.

Similar cases of people openly displaying firearms are rare in Portland, Simpson said. And when they do, it’s usually a handgun.

“We support everyone’s constitutional rights, but we ask that they exercise them responsibly,” he said. “Anyone walking around with a visible firearm is going to generate calls from concerned citizens that we have to respond to. That takes resources away from potentially more serious incidents.”

Boyce and Drouin did, in fact, generate several emergency calls and caused at least one school to go into lockdown.

Creative Minds Learning Center in the 7700 block of Southeast 13th Avenue went into lockdown and sent an email to parents informing them of armed men in the neighborhood.

“We’ve been keeping the kids away from the windows,” said Meredith Cone, the school’s director. “It sounds unusual, but everyone here is safe and happy.”

Karl Janiak, who lives in the 1000 block of Southeast Spokane Street, said he was home with his wife when Boyce and Drouin were passing through, but did not see them.

He said he supports the Second Amendment, grew up in Alaska using guns to hunt and take target practice. He also owns a firearm, but said he was upset by the duo’s actions.

“Someone could have spotted them, felt threatened and the situation easily could have escalated because someone felt they had to make a statement that’s already in the Constitution,” Janiak said. “When you purchase and own a gun, you owe it to the community to be responsible with it.”

"It's the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Drunk!" (kingfish), Thursday, 10 January 2013 04:29 (twelve years ago)

This sort of cluelessness about firearms is the fruit of decades of NRA-induced stupidity regarding gun ownership. What, in the good lord's name, is there to shoot in a city neighborhood, except people or pets?

Aimless, Thursday, 10 January 2013 04:35 (twelve years ago)

you know good ideas are comin when they're comin from 22 year old men with assault weapons.

Clay, Thursday, 10 January 2013 04:53 (twelve years ago)

Photos and 9-1-1 calls from yesterday:

http://media.oregonlive.com/portland_impact/photo/gun-demonstrationjpg-7bac4ff1319eada9.jpg

http://www.oregonlive.com/portland/index.ssf/2013/01/rifle_toting_activist_in_portl.html

...Medford police have received at least 67 complaints about Warren R. Drouin openly carrying a semi-auto rifle or handgun in a wide range of public settings between June 2011 and December 2012, according to agency records. One episode generated more than two dozens calls to police. At least one Medford business barred him from the property because of his behavior.

The 22-year-old Medford man is so familiar to police in the southern Oregon city that top officials in the 103-member police force refer to him simply as "Warren" when describing their interactions with him. Officers receive training specifically on how to approach Drouin and others in the so-called open carry movement, which promotes the ability to openly carry guns...

Why do Portlanders allow their friends to wear Death in June tshirts?

This calumny must not stand! Every time I have seen a friend of mine wear a Death in June t-shirt I have flown into a rage, torn it from their body, shredded it into raglets with my teeth and spit them into my friend's face, along with an injunction never to darken my door again. Every time, mind you! And I am sure most Portlanders can say the same.

Aimless, Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:25 (eleven years ago)

you have no idea what you are talking about, it's not an appropriate target for sarcasm

sleeve, Thursday, 19 December 2013 18:28 (eleven years ago)

I was assuming the logo refers to some especially heinous subdivision of the Nazi SS, whose mission consisted solely of committing unspeakable atrocities. No? The appropriation of Nazi symbols by shitheads to prove their outlaw credentials has been going on a very long time.

My sarcasm was directed mainly at the idea that not 'allowing' someone to wear the symbol was an effective response. If they are ignorant, you can cure that and they will choose to stop flaunting the symbol. If they are aware, then your outrage just plays into their desires.

xps thanks! i've been to portland only once, but i loved it. i'm just kinda over the bay area and i don't have any ties like close friends. jordan has 1.5 hour commute each way (longer some days, depending on how shitty BART is acting). the housing market is just insane. any raise jordan gets ends up going towards a rent increase. portland just seems more chill.

All of my female friends in Portland work adult jobs. Nurses, tech stuff, social work, your average grown-up jobby stuff.
Of my male friends, they either a) own their own business or b) are brunch servers/baristas/both. There is no inbetween for them.
I dunno if this speaks more to my cohort or more to the types of jobs that are available in Portland or more to the types of people Portland attracts.

i'm tired of worrying about how much my rent is gonna go up at any given time. after 2 years of no rent increase, our landlords suddenly jacked our rent by $300 at the start of this year, which was hugely painful to absorb into our budget. the area i live in is getting more and more sf tech ppl so the rents are increasing dramatically. i just want to buy a damn house and be done with it. i hate moving, so i'd like to find a city/area to live in and just stay there forever.

xps if my husband got a job that paid the same as his current one, we could def afford to buy a small house in portland, in a nice area (at the moment, anyway).

"In metropolitan Oakland, the median list price for a starter home is up 104 percent since 2012, according to a Trulia analysis. In Denver, it's up 78 percent. In Portland, 50 percent."

i live on the oakland border :/

just1n3, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 04:00 (nine years ago)

also, his "windowless closet for $360 a month" is a fucking bargain compared to sf - where someone was renting a truck - lined with plywood, and NOTHING ELSE, not even a damn parking space - for $800 a month.

just1n3, Wednesday, 30 March 2016 04:03 (nine years ago)

well i mean as a lifelong portlander i can attest that, while rents might be really bad in the bay area, they've doubled or so in the last couple of years in portland. many people i know have been priced out of their neighborhoods, including myself. and it's mostly because of bay area tech money moving up here because it's cheaper. so i mean, that's been a huge issue for non-wealthy people in the pdx area. everyone you meet has basically moved here in the past few years.

Seeking good hiking trails not too far from town. We did the Wahkeena - Fairy - Weisendanger - Multnomah Falls hike in January and wouldn't mind doing that again but maybe switch it up elsewhere in the gorge? Thanks in advance!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 1 August 2016 16:47 (eight years ago)

Try browsing around in the Field Guide section of OregonHikers.org for a hike that appeals to you. btw, at this time of year the gorge is pretty crowded and by going a bit further afield you can hike at higher elevations that are too snowed under to hike most of the year. Mt St Helens has some very scenic hikes.

a little too mature to be cute (Aimless), Monday, 1 August 2016 16:53 (eight years ago)

Yeah, I actually had that tab open and saw the Tunnel Falls hike which also looked nice.

We are short on time so were just looking for a quick escape from the city center, will probably end up in the Gorge. We don't mind getting an early start to battle the crowds and get back in time for our obligations. Thanks aimless!

Jersey Al (Albert R. Broccoli), Monday, 1 August 2016 16:57 (eight years ago)

Pretty good hiking to be had in town if y'all are really pressed for time, I dunno how far you've ventured into Forest Park but you may be surprised how beautiful and quiet it is only a couple miles down the Leif Erikson trail, and of course that runs for 10+ miles, with miles more of smaller trails spider-webbing off and around it.

And all without having to leave the city at all! Forest Park is the best thing Portland has going imo.

it's sort of a layered stunt (sheesh), Monday, 1 August 2016 18:20 (eight years ago)

If you do go to the gorge I really like Elowah Falls, easy hike, beautiful falls you can get plenty close to, and there are other falls nearby you can chain together for a longer/harder hike, you can even climb to the top of Munra Point if you're in the mood for punishment. View from the peak is well worth it though!

De nada, let us all know what y'all ended up walking, always interested to hear about a local hike, Lord knows there are too many trails for anyone in particular to be familiar with.

Plenty of places in the world, in the country even, where there ain't any good hiking unless you're ready for a proper roadtrip, I feel this is an overlooked perk of Portland even now, when hiking seems as popular as ever. Good for us though, huh?

Timely right about now with this Pokemon Go blowing up all of a sudden..

Seems like the two major draws (beyond pocket monsters) are the social aspect, and that it makes you get up and walk around. And I feel like, well hell, if you like walking around...have you been to the Gorge?

From what I've gathered there probably aren't many Pokemon in the Gorge, but there may be an opportunity here...where's that thread where we give away good ideas...

Trip report: Woke up early (5:30am) on Saturday and hit the trails around Bridal Veil, Wahkeena, Multnomah & Horsetail Falls and back to NE Alberta for Pine State Biscuits before the line was nuts.

Sunday we woke up early for a shorter excursion and headed due east to Hillside and improvised on the network of trails heading south, connecting to the arboretum, Japanese garden & the zoo. We still had some energy so we connected to the "Four T" trail which was a mix of urban and offroad trails but once we got to OHSU we realized we wouldn't be able to take the tram down til 1pm so we just hopped on a bus down the hill back downtown.

Thanks again for the tips, if we ever get a chance to add in a few more days we will try to get out to the surrounding mountains.

Only worth it if you own or can access a car though (and you might find yourself wanting 4WD at that).

I never actually owned the NW one (lived in Eugene), but I'm sure it's good. Always nice to take a phone photo of his map before setting out

Love the arboretum, such a good idea. Does every city have a living tree museum? I suspect not, but they really ought to. Had never heard of the "4T" trail, sounds like a good excuse to finally try out that tram thing. Are the off-road portions nice?

Can vouch for the Sullivan books, I only have the NW one but it is an excellent resource, probably the best I've found in old timey paper form anyway

post from FOAF:

"For white folx applauding the images and video of a naked protestor in Portland that causes cops to retreat momentarily, I wanted you to know that a lot of BIPOC folx are not feeling great about how this action is being focused on and applauded, particularly as if this is a white woman and as if it’s revolutionary. Please do not believe this person invented this idea. African women have done this as a form of protest (link in the comments).

UPDATE: I think I need to post for clarity, I am not suggesting this person should not protest this way or that this is not a version of weaponizing privilege with the intention to help. I am sharing thoughts of Black folx in BIPOC groups I’m in because I think white folx and NBPOC like me need to consider these perspectives. I don’t know that the naked protestor is white or that they are a woman TBH (I’ve been informed the person is NBPOC by a few folx). I was not there, I don’t know what happened post these images.

The issue is how the images and action are being shared and applauded by white folx in a way to center whiteness, white feminism and the martyrdom of white women. Those folx seem to be reading the person as a white woman, calling her “Athena” and “Lady Godiva” and hash tagging ‘pussypower.’ That is the problematic behavior I am trying to discuss. The shift of the focus from Black folx to white women or NBPOC women and the lack of open understanding about the privileges at work. The second image was shared in one of the BIPOC groups I’m in online. I believe it’s a response to the first image (and others like it) posted by white women."

it's really frustrating to live here right now. really frustrating.

everything is happening on twitter and i don't read twitter because it's not a good environment for me, a healthy environment for me, because you go on twitter and people spend hours arguing about the naked person if they were a guy or a woman or an enby and if they were white or a poc and those are important questions to ask, important discussions to have, and i don't need to be a part of that.

in the meantime i do have questions and the question i have is what the fuck is _happening_

from what i can tell, me sitting in my home just like most of everybody else is sitting safe in our homes because while this is not ok, none of this is ok, i have other important things that i'm trying to do to the best of my ability, because my ability to be of help depends on my being able to do those things...

from what i can tell the federal government is trying to create a fucking war here

from what i can tell there were a couple dozen kids who describe themselves as "feral youths" and they turned the apple store into a george floyd monument and anybody who wants to buy an apple is just getting one online probably

and last night a couple thousand moms and dads showed up and the police, in conjunction with federal forces, tear-gassed them and smashed shit and it's probably going to be on the news today

and who's going to be there tonight, nobody, nothing is planned, nothing is organized, maybe there's some twitter hashtag i'm not aware of where this stuff is being talked about

what the protesters are doing is important and what the media is doing is important and i want to do _something_ besides staring blankly into space terrified for hours on end but there's not really anything for me to do.

i tell myself over and over that what i need to do is take care of myself but what the president is doing in portland is making it extremely difficult, and i envy those of you who are still able to function on a daily basis, not because you're ok with it, like literally nobody is, even the people who are supporting the federal troops want _something_ else to happen

because i am not only not ok, i am not safe, and i don't know how to be safe, not now, not here.

People are probably going to be there tonight, if Seattle's main two weeks of police riots are any indication. If you want to join a protest, just walk down and join in - it's easy and affirming! you can pick how close or crowded you want to be - if you feel better personally or as a contributor to helping society staying home, stay home.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 23 July 2020 13:14 (four years ago)

I assume the people booing the mayor as he's getting tear-gassed are the same people who would tear down a statue of Harriet Tubman because someone told them she had something to do with slavery.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 July 2020 13:18 (four years ago)

Is that a challenge? Gauntlet thrown!

I meant driven by inchoate rage is all.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 July 2020 13:41 (four years ago)

Like Kate, I'm not gladdened that unaccountable federal "cops" teargassed a mayor, but AIUI Wheeler is the police commissioner and his police force has made extensive use of tear gas in this and other protests, so I don't agree that their rage is "inchoate," it seems pretty specific to me.

I also think it's...off the mark to analogize Wheeler to Harriet Tubman or even a statue of her.

rob, Thursday, 23 July 2020 13:48 (four years ago)

Oh, that wasn't my intent. I was thinking specifically of the protestors in Madison, WI, who took down a statue of an abolitionist and a monument to women's suffrage. That's the kind of inchoate rage I was referencing. If Portland's mayor has a history, then by all means, boo away. But if he's part of the problem and not the solution, then I don't know who is going to push to get the feds out of there. The AG? Governor?

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 23 July 2020 13:56 (four years ago)

The frustrating thing for me is watching a national battle play out over what are properly local fucking issues. I understand why the protestors are jeering the mayor. People watching on Twitter, probably a lot of people watching on this thread, won't, and will dismiss it as the radical left eating its own.

I don't think the President and his forces are engaging in divide and conquer tactics on purpose. I'm not convinced he's smart enough for that. I don't think it matters.

I have friends overseas who don't understand why the President is still in office, who don't understand why we don't do something about it. Well, of course, it's because we have no legal recourse. And I have... well, I guess people who I considered friends, and they say that what the federal officers are doing is bad, of course, but that doesn't excuse what the protestors are doing, and they are just going to have to sit this one out, sorry.

I am way more afraid of the federal government than I am of the protestors. Way more afraid. Since I don't have recourse to the law, since the federal government does not consider itself bound by the law, my only hope is that a decisive number of people will see it the same way and that they will make their decisions, live their lives, in accordance with those beliefs.

At this point it's basically a blind hope, and I'm not very good at that.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 23 July 2020 13:59 (four years ago)

An hour or so after Wheeler departed, his own Portland Police Bureau declared the event a riot and ordered people to leave downtown or face “arrest, citation or riot control agents.”

The feds never left. They stationed a garrison of 130 troops behind, when the original detachment was 114. The cops naturally returned to beating people and slashing tires last night over on the eastside.

There’s a precinct or a sheriffs joint on E Burnside

In this video we hear a Portland Police officer discuss his desire to shoot pepper spray up a protester's ass.

Is this acceptable behavior from an officer @ChiefCLovell? Do you like hearing this @tedwheeler? Should this man be allowed to stay on the force, @DAMikeSchmidt? https://t.co/pWloQ8LewY

I'm near Foster-Powell. What sort of timing are we thinking? Is a weekday lunch OK? My work schedule is pretty flexible and a lot of times I'll go to Pizzeria Otto FoPo, they have a Margherita lunch special at a really good price. That's just an opening suggestion, though, I have a car so I can go damn near anywhere.

Sleeve I've been planning to visit some friends down in Eugene for, well, literally years now. If I ever actually get down there you're on the itinerary. :)

ice storm is looking pretty bad tomorrow... i'm hunkered down in my girlfriend's apartment. it was built for student housing so the insulation is pretty good, unlike with my apartment where the walls are made of paper. expecting widespread power outages tomorrow. we got food and plenty of blankets and we should be ok. hope everyone in the area is staying safe.

Kate (rushomancy), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 02:33 (one year ago)

Power was out at the office, okay in the neighborhood. Picked up an electric heater on Saturday morning after one night of the wind getting thru the windows into the bedroom. Cats have mainly been indoors for the past 3 days and are complaining about it

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 06:28 (one year ago)

We lost power for three hours Saturday morning, got it back, then lost it again at 1:30pm as the thermometer was hitting 15F with 35 mph winds. We lived with wood-burning fireplace heat and a camp stove for the next 52 hours or so. Our living room eventually stabilized at 47F. We set a timer at one hour intervals all night to feed the fire, taking turns.

We got power back yesterday (Monday) at 5pm. Since then we've raised the house back up to 68F, got some sleep, and today we've been prepping like mad for the next outage from the coming ice storm. We still have lots of wood, but only about 65% of what we had going into this storm. We'll survive. We've lived through similar events multiple times. Just not much fun.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Tuesday, 16 January 2024 23:28 (one year ago)

Car windows here (Southeast) iced over solid in about 15 minutes. Can't imagine what 12 hours of this will be like if the graupel continues. Have been lucky keeping heat and power this past weekend and mostly hunkering down, though the snow has been un-slippery the past two days and easy for walking.

underwater as a compliment (Eazy), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 22:41 (one year ago)

I have some 'trail' crampons with spikes about 1/2" long so I think I'll try getting out of the house for a short walk along mostly level grades. I'm getting a bit stir crazy, also sleep deprived. At least we are still with power, so there's no real threat to our health or safety while we wait for the slow thaw.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Wednesday, 17 January 2024 22:52 (one year ago)

I'm getting serious cabin fever... still stuck at my GFs with her other GF and her roommate... still not safe to travel today. Hopefully tomorrow. Me, my GF, and her GF are all doing pretty badly in emotional health terms, and putting us all in an apartment together isn't exactly making for wacky comedy gold. Plus, the weather has meant that I haven't had access to, like, therapy. I guess the upside is that I've written 5,000 words of fiction in the past two days, simply for lack of anything else to do.

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 18 January 2024 05:18 (one year ago)

Damn, that sucks. I hope you’re feeling better today.

Been mostly in the apartment for the past several days, was going to motor to the workplace today but with freezing rain going to possibly hit this afternoon, I’m holding off on that.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Thursday, 18 January 2024 16:36 (one year ago)

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 18 January 2024 19:27 (one year ago)

We lost power for another two hours from 4pm to 6pm. Temperature hovering between 31F and 32F with strongish winds and the neighborhood has hundreds of 125 ft tall firs and cedars getting top heavy with ice. I am not optimistic about making through the night without losing it again. Ah, me. Just hoping the roof stays intact and the cars uncrushed.

well of course i'm not fucking ok with it. i got at least two nazis in my (extremely gay) neighborhood. they could probably kill a lot of queer people if they got the mind to do so. like, what's the ask here?

Portland is weird because it didn’t sprawl like most American metros did, so white flight was only a difference of like 5 miles away or across the river into Washington State. You can bike it.

So the kicker here is that the suburban/exurban fashy supporter crowd is a lot close to the city types they all hate, rather than like an hour away as it plenty of other metros

Kate (rushomancy), Monday, 15 April 2024 13:04 (one year ago)

Had no idea about this film fest at OMSI! I still have never seen Galaxy Quest, so maybe this Sunday would be the time to.

I finally found two guides to current arthouse listings, since so many venues do one-time screenings without there being comprehensive showtimes in one place.

There's this weekly newsletter with good recommendations

And then there's this guide as well.

I live walking distance from both Cinemagic and Clinton Street Theater, so I've been going to those regularly. Still haven't made it to the Academy. For first-run movies, I've loved the Moreland especially, with $5 Tuesdays, a big theater that's not too crowded, and great sound/picture (and that Milwaukie/Bybee neighborhood is fun, too).

My wife and I are coming through to Portland this weekend from Friday until Monday - we’re over from the UK for our first visit to the North West of the states. Any gigs or other fun things happening? Also we enjoy beer if anyone fancies meeting up.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 15 April 2024 16:40 (one year ago)

We could be up for seeing Stalker actually.

Chewshabadoo, Monday, 15 April 2024 16:45 (one year ago)

for some reason i still haven't made it out to Clinton Street Theater, despite also living in walking distance, haha. I've been wanting to see RHPS there for ages (I've actually never seen it). I did go out and get tickets to Stalker at OMSI on Sunday - they're nearly sold out for that showing. If anybody else is going and wants to meet up, LMK, my email is my username at gmail.

Anyway reason I bumped this thread was that I was on my way back from my mammogram today and passed a Lutheran church that was advertising that they were doing Drag Church. Portland, people of all genders and/or no genders. Portland.

We haven’t got tickets yet, but are thinking about it, just want to check there isn’t anything else on that night over the next few days.

We might see Love Lies Bleeding which is not out yet in the UK, are either Living Room Theaters or Studio One Theaters good cinemas?

Chewshabadoo, Tuesday, 16 April 2024 23:43 (one year ago)

Living Room tix are relatively expensive as far as movie theaters go, with the gimmick that you get food delivered

Portland State standoff with protesters continues as students, faculty urged to stay away

Portland State University remained at a tense standstill Tuesday amid the second straight day of a volatile standoff between pro-Palestinian protesters who have occupied the main library and the university’s administrators who have asked police to intervene.
Both Portland Police Chief Bob Day and university President Ann Cudd have said that a police response at the now graffiti-covered library is all but inevitable if demonstrators do not choose to vacate the premises.
The university canceled classes Tuesday and it was not immediately clear when they would resume.

portland has a long way to go before it's phoenix's north annex, but I used to tell newcomers in the 1990s that you couldn't really count on summer starting by july 4th. you might have to wait until bastille day. that's not remotely true now.

I met a heat-averse friend for breakfast this morning at 7:30 (at Spielman's Bagels & Coffee, god was it good), and the weather was just perfect. Coming from the Midwest, it makes me so happy having these temperate mornings even during a heatwave.

the possibility of relaxing (Eazy), Saturday, 6 July 2024 01:42 (eleven months ago)

Mornings in Portland are so nice. The heat in Portland doesn't really start to hit until around 5. The rain here is so much better than the rain in the Midwest, too.

Kate (rushomancy), Saturday, 6 July 2024 14:09 (eleven months ago)

The part of Portland's weather that newcomers struggle with most is the prevalence of heavy cloud cover and gray skies from November to May. Coming here from almost any other part of the USA this is a serious challenge to people's daily moods. Apart from that, the weather here is pretty damn good by comparison.

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 6 July 2024 18:20 (eleven months ago)

(re: rain, that is. midwest simply wins on summer storms, i miss them)

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 6 July 2024 18:21 (eleven months ago)

Torrential electrical summer storms and lightning bugs are the only things I kinda miss from the Midwest, yeah.

And White Castle

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Sunday, 7 July 2024 23:10 (eleven months ago)

Lightning storms are rare in the PNW but they do happen. I can tell you this because my house out in Beaverton was hit by lightning during one of them. It wasn't something I particularly missed about the Midwest. I'm glad we don't have more of them.

Even heavy wind/rain seems unusual here vs. drizzle. Loving being outside this weekend, especially in the shade. It's like a happy-light from all directions.

https://www.wweek.com/news/environment/2024/07/06/bill-mckibben-talks-climate-action-as-heat-wave-arrives-in-portland/

As Portland entered a five-day heat wave, McKibben, the celebrated climate activist and author, arrived Friday evening at the First Unitarian Church in downtown Portland—a building, like many in this city, that lacks air conditioning.

“It’s not our job to stop global warming. It’s too late for that,” McKibben said to the sweating crowd. “It’s our job to stop it getting to the point where it cuts civilization off at the knees.”

Just a plug for local folks that I'm playing songs Sunday night with other good acts at Turn! Turn! Turn!, starting at 8. (Sets on the shorter side, so it won't go too late.) Info and links to all our music is on this page.

I'll try to make it! Things have been stressful lately but I'm hoping to start getting out again :)

Kate (rushomancy), Thursday, 11 July 2024 18:47 (eleven months ago)

That would be great! And if you can't make it, hope we can catch up another time soon.

In local news, we might get 50-70 mph winds and heavy rain around 6 p.m. tomorrow.

yep it's looking pretty crazy

pink-haired Marxist (sleeve), Saturday, 17 August 2024 01:33 (ten months ago)

Criminy! the National Weather Service forecast for my Portland suburb tomorrow reads:

A 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms after 2pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 83. Calm wind becoming north northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Saturday, 17 August 2024 03:56 (ten months ago)

I think it's one of those situations where if it makes it here, it's bad, but it might not:

Chances for thunderstorms on Saturday continues to increase (20-60%) across NW OR and SW WA. The SPC has upgraded the risk of severe weather along & east of the I-5 corridor to the Cascades. Here is what Portland NWS is saying about the flash flood potential.
"Heavy rainfall is expected over the 2024 burn areas associated with active wildfires. Hourly rainfall rates up to 0.75 inches per hour will be possible. Rogueweather added - in looking at the forecast models, I am seeing potential of up to an inch per hour.
Residents near these areas should prepare for potential flooding impacts. Be sure to stay up to date with information from local authorities. Heavy rainfall could trigger flash flooding of low-lying areas, and debris flows in and near recent wildfire burn scars."

pink-haired Marxist (sleeve), Saturday, 17 August 2024 16:18 (ten months ago)

And now a severe thunderstorm watch until 9 tonight, although from the comments it looks like Washington County has a slightly lower risk:

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Sunday, 18 August 2024 16:26 (ten months ago)

I'll be looking carefully to see if yesterday's lightning started any new fires in the vicinity of the 5 day backpack I'm planning on this week. The fire danger nearly everywhere except the oceanside has been rated at "extreme" for a month now, so any ground strikes are likely to have found dry fuel. The smoke from all the wildfires sucks, but getting trapped in the wilderness by a wildfire sucks far worse.

Yeah, I noticed that yesterday morning too. Some in Old Town, which is an area I didn’t think any sort of March or protest would congregate
