i will rep big island til i die

max, Sunday, 3 June 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

World 3 wins

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 3 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

sky level.

andi, Sunday, 3 June 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

Giant land is totally great and gorgeous looking. I have a feeling the worlds warped past the most are going to rank higher - at a certain point one just gets sick of plowing through the desert world AGAIN.

The pipe world is godawful though. Sky has the most zaniness per square inch, in a good way - I mean, the Shoe!

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 3 June 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

World 4 & 5 are K-CLASSIK, esp. climbing up the giant Babel thing. I hate the obligatory ice level in any game; I'm just not coordinated enough to handle it. That's why I stay safe with ADVENTURES OF LOLO.

Abbott, Sunday, 3 June 2007 18:21 (eighteen years ago)

Giant World, no fucking contest. That was the coolest shit ever when I was 10.

marmotwolof, Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

World 5.

You get to hop around in a boot and turn into a statue and shit=AMAZING.

Colin_C., Sunday, 3 June 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

In all fairness, I remember turning into a statue in World 4 much more clearly - and 6 does offer, if you go incredibly out of your way, the temptation of the Hammer Brother Suit, which beats the statue in my mind (tho not the shoe).

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 3 June 2007 20:02 (eighteen years ago)

worst one = desert world, that's some boring shit. giant world and pipe land were the best.

J.D., Sunday, 3 June 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

Didn't they release this for the GBA? I need to get that shit.

Abbott, Sunday, 3 June 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

OH MAN I FORGOT ABOUT THE BOOT PLS CAN I CHANGE VOTE TO SKY

max, Sunday, 3 June 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Sky level for sure.

No one will vote for Pipe level, but I always found that to be really challenging (in a fun way).

Z S, Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:12 (eighteen years ago)

world 6, because it has 10 normal levels and 3 castles! i always thought it was awesome how it just keeps going.

aaron d.g., Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

How come no one's even mentioned World 8? That one's awesome 'cause it only has TWO normal levels!

aaron d.g., Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, this is quite coincidental.

http://img201.imageshack.us/img201/6264/fgdie8.jpg

jim, Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:36 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno if I would vote for seaside though, Big Island is big.

jim, Sunday, 3 June 2007 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

the Hammer Bros suit in 6 = gold, but dammit does it ever suck to lose

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:20 (eighteen years ago)

3 > 5 > 4 > 6 > 1 > 8 > 7 > 2

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

but I still like all of them.

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 00:21 (eighteen years ago)

Giant Land is the best.

World 3 sucked because of that damn fish guy that jumped out of the water and swallowed you. I think Nintendo Power referred to him as "Boss Bass."

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

when my brother and I were young kids, it was known to us as the "man-eating ferotus". no, i have no idea what a ferotus is.

aaron d.g., Monday, 4 June 2007 02:39 (eighteen years ago)

Worst thing about Boss Bass was that you could merk him with a fireball and the cunt reappears within about five seconds.

jim, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

Best: Giant
Worst: Ice

S-, Monday, 4 June 2007 02:45 (eighteen years ago)

Everyone I know (I was in 4th grade at the time) referred to Boss Bass as "Big Bertha," although I did not, so maybe it wasn't everyone I know. But lots of kids certainly did.

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, i called that asshole big birtha too.

andi, Monday, 4 June 2007 08:21 (eighteen years ago)

In the spirit of Curtis' post, but in a completely different order:

5 > 4 > 1 > 8 > 2 > 7 > 3 > 6

But, of course, the best thing with SMB3 is to play from 1->8 playing every level. :)

CraigG, Monday, 4 June 2007 09:54 (eighteen years ago)

haha I wonder where the Big Bertha thing came from. I did it too.

nickalicious, Monday, 4 June 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

Big Island. I'm having trouble remember the pipe one, which is weird b/c I've beaten this game eight billion times?

Adventures of Lolo OTM, favorite puzzle game ever.

Jordan, Monday, 4 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure "Big Bertha" is documented somewhere as the name of that fish. It's also the name of the fat lady in the SMB movie!

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

big bertha is a variety of cheep cheep. i'm pretty sure big bertha came from the manual

creme1, Monday, 4 June 2007 15:24 (eighteen years ago)

the one with the swirley castle and you go up to the clouds

sleep, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

Can you think of a better (concise) description?

billstevejim, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:34 (eighteen years ago)

i like that description! i wasn't mocking, just saying what i voted for.

sleep, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

Where is the LOVE for World 6?! That was probably the most difficult world! For me it's something like

6 > 8 > 1 > 5 > 3 > 7 > 4 > 2

But really, all but 4 and 2 were really neat (sorry, I think Big Island was overrated... yeah, they're big, not a lot else going on though)

Will M., Monday, 4 June 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

I believe it's world 6.5 that was UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE for me to beat when I was 7. I think I beat it when I tried last year though.

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah I think maybe there was some second island in 6? I always, ALWAYS skipped over that one. I liked the pipe maze a lot, because hey, pipes.

nickalicious, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

My proudest video game moment to date is discovering how to warp from world 1 -> world 8 in this game, all by myself.

Jordan, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

(fyi it involves using a whistle while ALREADY IN the whistle/stage select zone)

Jordan, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

yeah that shit is awesome, but then you skip the coolest levels!

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

I'm playing mario 64 start to finish for the first time right now and the soundtrack is yoga flame for all time.

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

haha I remember when I first did that double-warp-whistle thing, I was actually disappointed it didn't take me to some kind of alternate universe/minusworld place.

nickalicious, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

nicka did you try using it a THIRD TIME????

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

not saying it will, that's just the eight-year-old in me applying his brute-force "well why the fuck not" heuristic to the situation

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

The sky world has a lot of forced-scrolling stages that I hate, so I voted for big island. But I agree that the sky has some whacked out crazy shit.

I think I actually did this and it just picks you up and drops you back off in the same stage.

Jordan, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

this clearly calls for a fourth attempt

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)

perhaps the game genie could be useful here

strongohulkington, Monday, 4 June 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)

I heard that if you collect 99 Fire Flowers they turn into 99 Magic Whistles and you can use them all to fly straight to Bowser's castle and save the princess and then play the whole game over as the princess and you get 99 free P-Wings if you do this

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)

FEROTA

Abbott, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)

Pipe Maze is fun as heckiny, too, it's like Kid Icarus but...comprehensible.

Abbott, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

World 3 is great when you break the rock and then you sail to the 10 BILLION FREE STUFFS CASTLES.

Abbott, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)

^^ u&k

sitar in lava level of mario 64
metalphones in ghost world of mario 64

Super Mario World ghost houses had my favorite music. There was this creepy organ fall-off thing.

nickalicious, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

The SMW ghost house is great indeed.

Any love for Sunshine? I'm on my 14th run. My little cousin(5 years old) can't get enough of it and it seems like it's the only thing she wants to play. Starting to get a little bit sick of it..

And I tried looking for my N64, but it's nowhere to be found. EEK

MRZBW, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Best thing about Super Mario 3: flying

Mr. Snrub, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

I like mario world flying better

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

Hammer Brothers suit
Tanooki suit
Frog suit
boot
canoe

What a great game. When it came out no-one (among my friends) had parents who would buy it for them, so we picked up (stole) empty beer cans at frat houses and played it on the Play-Choice 10 with the money we got.

dan m, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

best mario 64 music is on jolly roger bay, i used to just trance out for hours playing that level

creme1, Monday, 4 June 2007 18:48 (eighteen years ago)

Hammer bros suit OTM, I was deadly w/ that thing... there were not enough of them in that game

xp

Will M., Monday, 4 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

The goomba shoe thing was ace. But I think that was only in one level. Jumping on the head of those stupid pipe-plants was excellent. Flying in Super Mario World was so much better than the flying in Super Mario 3. I remember the first time I did the flying, day after my holy communion and some kid in my street had got a Super Nintendo and Mario Bros. for his communion and the shit just blew me away. Became really good friends with that guy and he was a total asshole.

jim, Monday, 4 June 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

But, of course, the best thing with SMB3 is to play from 1->8 playing every level. :)

-- CraigG, Monday, 4 June 2007 09:54 (12 hours ago) Link

Yes! This is how you have to do it ever single time you play the game.

Also, we're all pretty much in agreement that this is the very best video game ever, right? Why don't they just make more Mario games like this, anymore?

andi, Monday, 4 June 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

^ rong

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 4 June 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

But Kevin Arnold kid brother could not have won NES tournament in THE WIZARD without the help of warp whistles!

Abbott, Monday, 4 June 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

^ I was just about to mention that.

That ending was bullshit! How in the world would the sidekick girl know where the secret warp whistle was? In the movie, they chose Super Mario 3 for the final because it hadn't been released yet (hence, it would be fair to both contestants). AND, would the girl just be allowed to shout out tips to one of the players?? Even when I was a kid I thought that ending was stupid.

Z S, Monday, 4 June 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)

World 3 is great when you break the rock and then you sail to the 10 BILLION FREE STUFFS CASTLES.

OTM. I'm not wild about World 3, but I always thought this was pretty cool.

This is definitely one game where having the Nintendo Power guide actually made it BETTER, because there was SO much stuff you'd never find otherwise, or find once and never be able to figure out again like the magical coin ship and the White Mushroom House and so on...

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 5 June 2007 02:32 (eighteen years ago)

Why don't they just make more Mario games like this, anymore?

The New SMB for the DS was pretty great, if way too short and not nearly packed with all these details.

Mario 2 is the shit.

I've never even beaten Mario 3, the 7th and 8th boards are crazy hard.

Oh yeah, how do you get the Hammer Bros. suit? I've never done that either...

That cake looks really good to me right now...

Colin_C., Thursday, 7 June 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

You get the Hammer Bros. suit by beating the Hammer Bros. in world 6.

Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 7 June 2007 13:17 (eighteen years ago)

Who the hell voted desert? Come forward!

MRZBW, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

you can get one in a mushroom house too! I forget which one though.

Will M., Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

There's a bunch of mushroom houses that randomly give you Tanooki Suit, Hammer suit or Frog Suit. I think there's also a hidden big "?" block that gives you a hammer suit.

Worlds 7 and 8 are the hardest in all of mariodom aren't they.

abanana, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:51 (eighteen years ago)

World 8 isn't so bad! You can swim underneath the big ship, after all. :>

Jordan, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah let's do Mario 2! One time I had like 30 lives and was getting bored and started just jumping in random holes and found a warp zone! I think it was in level 4? It was at the bottom of a waterfall that looked like a deathhole but wasn't.

nickalicious, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

Mario 2 desert stages >>>>>>>> Mario 3 desert stages.

nickalicious, Thursday, 7 June 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

I did not vote Desert Hill, but there was a point (early on in my mario 3 days, when I was like 10) when 2.4 & 2.5 used to be my 2 favorite consecutive levels.

billstevejim, Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Nickalicious OTM, Mario 2 desert stages are exciting. Especially when you're in, you know, a basket and you're digging down in the sand with a slower character (not Toad), and dudes are chasing you. Especially the flying masked guy and you have to keep throwing away the key, you know?

Jordan, Thursday, 7 June 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

seven months pass...

I believe it's world 6.5 that was UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE for me to beat when I was 7

Someone help me beat 6-5! I've tried it a million times but I can't get past it! "Starfighter" here suggests a plausible solution, but I can't do it. How the hell are you supposed to hold the koopa shell (by holding down b) AND fly (by hitting a repeatedly) at the same time???? HALP!!!

I was mainly impressed bcz when I was like seven and he was five, I would watch him play that game, and every time he made a mistake, he would yell that I distracted him and throw the controller really hard at me. So it is a game whose difficulty I associate with personal collateral damage.

Abbott, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know, i didn't even really fuck with that game, i would just play through tmnt: the arcade game over and over.

All the stuff coming out lately with the Lua scripting has been incredibly bizarre - see also Mega Man 2 with laser eyebeams.

Nhex, Friday, 17 April 2009 02:31 (sixteen years ago)

that looks incredibly frustrating. the mega man one is amazing.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 17 April 2009 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

the rainbow thing is awesome. Anyone played the Kirby game that's the other half of the mashup? Great stuff, until you get to collecting the last few things. I don't think I ever finished it, frustrating piece of shit...

My brother just beat NES TMNT and my whole family is hugely in awe of him (he is 22).

I do not believe this. While I probably last played this game when I was 5 or 6, I'm fairly sure it's impossible.

Only two votes for world 8? No one likes a challenge, eh? (Although it wouldn't have been my vote either, and I admit that I always ended up using the P-Wing on one of the levels. I forget which one.) The Desert world deserves to be recognised if only for the level where yr being chased by the sun. Thrills and spills aplenty.

Ralph, Waldo, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Merdeyeux), Friday, 17 April 2009 19:42 (sixteen years ago)

as for New Super Mario Brothers, while it's no Super Mario 3, I got completely obsessed with it for two days. I must have played it for about 20 hours in that period. And then I was done. :(

Ha I beat NES TMNT back in the day (''88? '89?)! It took me 2 months of nonstop playing, but I did it. (Also, since the game was rented, it cost me $200 in late fines. Oops.)

I can sit in my car all day, and that doesn't make me a car. (HI DERE), Friday, 17 April 2009 19:46 (sixteen years ago)

I'm pretty certain i beat TMNT in jr. high; xp.

The brash tweedy impertinence of Detective Freamon (forksclovetofu), Friday, 17 April 2009 19:47 (sixteen years ago)

no way. All I remember is alternating between dying every minute and getting lost.

Ralph, Waldo, Emerson, Lake & Palmer (Merdeyeux), Friday, 17 April 2009 19:48 (sixteen years ago)

world 8 had all kinds of tricks...you could swim under the boats for the whole gunboat level, you could get lucky and skip over the stages that the giant hand drags you into, etc.

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Friday, 17 April 2009 19:50 (sixteen years ago)

i think super mario bros 3 is the best video game of all time... as for favorite world, i'd go with giant world or cloud world for sure. ice world is fun, but the hammer suit is definitely less useful than the tanooki suit. playing the game with the game genie code where you start every level with the tanooki suit is pretty fun.

my cousin was able to beat tmnt, but i never could. there's a corridor you walk through before you get to shredder that is nearly impossible to get past without dying, although shredder is pretty easy to beat if you know what weapon to use.

Mother Father Chinese Dentist (ytth), Saturday, 18 April 2009 02:00 (sixteen years ago)

All of yr first paragraph basically OTM, except I don't know if I would say it is my #1. Top five for sure, though.

SORCEROUSES..roll on stage! (Pillbox), Saturday, 18 April 2009 02:12 (sixteen years ago)

I remember getting to Krang once when I was younger.
I bet Battletoads is harder than TMNT. Ive never heard of anyone beating it outside of emulators. (but apparently there is a cheat for unlimited lives)

Mulvaney, Saturday, 18 April 2009 02:21 (sixteen years ago)

Hmm... I'll give TMNT the edge on that one, mostly because Battletoads at least had secret warps so you could skip stages. Both had really brutal unforgiving platforming, though.

Nhex, Saturday, 18 April 2009 02:39 (sixteen years ago)

In college I tried to beat Battletoads and I was aware of every warp location. The farthest you can warp to is level 8 (from level 6). Then you have to beat five levels in a row. One of them is a water level very much like TMNT water level (hard as crap)

Mulvaney, Saturday, 18 April 2009 02:53 (sixteen years ago)

man there are so many situations there that would result in an inevitable, unsighted death on the first time of playing.

it's so soothing to watch a well-played platform game.

i remember playing battletoads at a friend's house but i think we never got past a level where you're on like jetcycles and have to avoid all kinds of obstacles

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Saturday, 18 April 2009 16:12 (sixteen years ago)

watching some of those levels i can't imagine how it would work with the 2p co-op

Ømår Littel (Jordan), Saturday, 18 April 2009 16:15 (sixteen years ago)

The funny thing is I think there's a glitched level in Battletoads that wasn't even tested for 2-player, and is literally impassable - 2P speedruns have them forced to kill off one partner and complete that level solo.

http://www.giantbomb.com/super-mario-bros-3/3030-10299/forums/super-mario-bros-3-was-a-stage-play-my-mind-is-blo-463610

I've played this game a kazillion times, but somehow I never figured this out. Obviously I noticed the various elements (the rising curtain, the 2-dimensional "hills", levels ending with going beyond the "stage", etc), but they never clicked together.

Miyamoto confirms this theory here.

that's kind of a weirdly phrased question though

welltris (crüt), Monday, 14 September 2015 13:27 (ten years ago)

Well yeah, but once you look at it all through this theory, it's kinda impossible to think it wasn't intentional. There's even the famous cheat in the first(?) level where you have to crouch long enough on top of the white pillar, and then you get to run behind the theatre set to a warp point.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 September 2015 13:32 (ten years ago)

Also, it explains how Mario can "transform" into a raccoon and tanuki while he's quite obviously wearing a mere costume.

Tuomas, Monday, 14 September 2015 13:39 (ten years ago)

I (subconsciously) knew it all along

frogbs, Monday, 14 September 2015 13:39 (ten years ago)

whoa, wait a second

what if ALL 2D platformers are secretly stage plays? think about it...they all have 2D set-like objects....they all have "stages"

1996 ball boy (Karl Malone), Monday, 14 September 2015 13:43 (ten years ago)

many of them feature conversations and boss battles, AKA "climaxes"

1996 ball boy (Karl Malone), Monday, 14 September 2015 13:43 (ten years ago)

Kinda cool. Of course there are also underwater levels and airship levels and tons of stuff that has no resemblance to anything that could be done in a stage play, so the idea doesn't seem super deep.

jmm, Monday, 14 September 2015 14:03 (ten years ago)

i have lifelong grudges against the ice world in this game

insufficiently familiar with xgau's work to comment intelligently (BradNelson), Monday, 14 September 2015 14:48 (ten years ago)

Yeah, it's a cute little framing device, nothing more, but nonetheless a nice flourish. Basically anything 'extra' on an NES game shows love and care IMHO, given how many titles in the library were just the barest of bitter bones.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 14 September 2015 14:57 (ten years ago)

I played it again on the 3DS a couple weeks ago. Pretty amazing game still. I must have warp-whistled a lot as a kid because some stages I really didn't remember.

jmm, Monday, 14 September 2015 16:07 (ten years ago)

playing aaaaaaaall the way through, 1-1 to 8-bowser, is one of the best ways to spend a morning/afternoon.

1996 ball boy (Karl Malone), Monday, 14 September 2015 16:10 (ten years ago)

I've been playing it on the Wii U and trying to go through every single level. This game was such a huge part of my childhood but I was the same way, some worlds I must've been constantly warping past, and I don't think I ever actually beat the game, all those World 8 ship levels were too bonkers for me. I've kinda come to believe that the warp whistles were sort of a rudimentary save function since it would take hours to go through every world.

frogbs, Monday, 14 September 2015 17:48 (ten years ago)

Yeah, worlds 7 and 8 were Nintendo hard. I prefer the All Stars version for the saves.

aaaaablnnn (abanana), Monday, 14 September 2015 18:26 (ten years ago)

i was too young to spend much time w/ the original NES but i had the 4-in-1 SNES version w/ M1, M2, and M3 + "Mario lost levels" or some shit. but i played this a fucking TON on the SNES

i think world 7 was one of the most challenging. world 5 probably the most fun. all the free shit though in world 3 was pretty dope.

world 8 is pretty fuckin crazy, those ships are intense.

marcos, Monday, 14 September 2015 18:37 (ten years ago)

I was all about building up a stockpile of P-wings in case the worst of the World 8 ship levels proved too much for me (that, and swimming under the boats), so I guess maybe the game is harder than I remember. Feel like 6 and 7, for paucity of 1-ups, were the only places I really ran the risk of Game Over. Anyway, the P-wing supply alone poses a reason to plow through every world, I think.

Gorefest Frump (Doctor Casino), Monday, 14 September 2015 18:48 (ten years ago)

The death flowers popping in and out of the small pipes on World 7 were incredibly difficult and frustrating.

The air armada level on World 8 I never completed without a P-wing.

Underwater levels and the frog suit were annoying. I can't remember if you could ever actually kill Bowser with hammers, but I know I tried. I loved the difficult scrolling levels, the airships bosses, the music when you see that "The King has been transformed!", the underground theme from SMB1 re-imagined with beat-boxing, Bowser's beautiful flowing J-pop mane,

and most of all, this spooky room from the World 5 tower:

my biggest criticism of SMB3 (and a humblebrag as well) is that i think the minibosses (the bosses at the end of each fort ~halfway through each world + bowser's maniacal offspring at the end of each world) were way too easy. particularly the fort boss guys. it was way too easy to jump on them and then time the follow-up jump to land on them again a split second after they started moving again.

1996 ball boy (Karl Malone), Monday, 14 September 2015 19:11 (ten years ago)

oh yea it is a total joke how easy they are

same goes for hammer bros

if you act fast you can take out these motherfuckers in like 3 seconds, you can do this every time. it so anticlimactic

if you stall though it can be challenging

marcos, Monday, 14 September 2015 19:13 (ten years ago)

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 14 September 2015 19:15 (ten years ago)

meant to put a "?" after his name. but yeah most of them were pretty easy. i wish they'd come up with more than one type of fort boss, that one guy never changed through the entire game, even when you're in level 7/8 and everything else is horrifically hard.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 14 September 2015 19:16 (ten years ago)

haha yea it gets to be pretty hilarious to keep seeing this same boss with the same corny music

not smb3, but i wanted to share my story about the first and only time my mom ever played a videogame. it was the first mario bros., level 1-3. i don't know why we didn't start her out at 1-1. my mom stared at the NES controller as my sister and i told her how to walk left and right, jump, and run. as i recall i explained this in a very lucid and logical way but since i was about 5 or 6 at the time it was probably a completely insane explanation interrupted by me making fart sounds into my palms. she listened to our instructions but was clearly agitated and tense. suddenly the timer ticked down to 100 and the music shifted into intense mode. i told her to hurry the fuck up or she would die. she started panicking and finally walked to the right and immediately fell off the cliff. she got really mad and left the room.

true but it was shot through with the fear that you'd have to redo the whole level if you choked.

exactly - I like that the bosses were easy b/c those castles were really challenging sometimes. I see them as just one more obstacle.

but everybody OTM re: the repetitive bosses. maybe one small way they ran up against the space limitations of the system, or rather, chose to compromise there rather than elsewhere. feel like the same problem plagues SMW but i can't even remember the bosses in that besides "REZNOR" (lol). yoshi's island suddenly has a range of really different, individually designed bosses. it was wonderful, but we'll get there in time i guess.

i remember at the time, fervent playground and backyard speculation on what mario 4 might bring. in fact, we understood vaguely that games came out first in japan, and that for all we knew, they were already up to mario 5 over there. anything was possible. we imagined many additional costume-transformations for mario, of which i remember only the (inevitable) ninja mario. was kinda disappointing that SMW dialed it back down to super, fiery and flying. i don't know if we ever thought about other bosses, but if the option of more varied/individualized koopas had been presented we would have been all about it - like mega man, or most other games really. wonder if they could have done more with the hammer brothers, too; beefed up or with a variety of attacks (the FIERY hammer brothers!) they could have been plausibly tough and varied without having to add that many new things to the engine. oh well.

so my brother is fighting Koopa and my sly friend is like "YO he keeps breaking those bricks, maybe if you jump down that hole they'll give you something to beat him with".
