What suggests that Britney is neither intelligent nor sane are the things she does and says, which, while perhaps brushed up by reporters to make for a more satisfying narrative, are nonetheless pretty unambiguous; you have to turn backflips and posit all kinds of now-what-suggested-that-to-you? stuff to think anything other than "she's a fucking mess, and getting worse."

that's a good piece, but here's the thing. Yes naturally her acting-out is meaningful. It's not just "crazy person doin' crazy shit." But the meaning of the behavior is pretty easy to parse: "I have gone insane. Maybe y'all have driven me insane with the way you do shit in the business I work in, or maybe I was going to lose it anyway, but what's the difference? Anyway, let me show you how crazy I have gone. This crazy." And to try and cast that as some sort of savvy press manipulation is more hopeful than I can muster.

Like someone said, it was they DFA produced track. Pretty damn stupid from TMZ to post that clip not realizing that it was an old unreleased track. You'd think them being on her case 24/7, they'd remember.

I don't think this is really a (complete) meltdown, more cracks through which we can see how she's like. I really can't believe she swept up dog shit with a Chanel dress, but there you go, I'm not Britney, I guess. Nor does it really matter. I think her career finished a few years ago. Or should have.

Yeah, and the fact that Syd Barrett's mental illness was reflected in his music and was known as a musician, whereas I think the main connection people make with Britney Spears's insanity is her status as a celebrity. Nobody is saying "ooh, you can hear the craziness in this new song written by hit producers that she performs."

Though that would actually have me MORE excited about the new album.
