Ok you don't like it. we get the point! i think if you peek at the "batshit right wing cartoons" thread you'll see this shit called "day by day" that makes this junk look like it was done by picaso.

From these examples Cat & Girl seems a lot better. The jokes don't make much sense, but they're not nearly as trite and obvious. Also, yes, quite nice drawings.

Nothing ever happens in QC. They just mention a band, make some zing and then hint at sex. It is very boring. I still read it though because I like the anthropc and want one.
― kv_nol, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:02 (eighteen years ago)
Hey I like QC. Love it. SA Rock City looks kind of shit from the examples here tho.

Can I please be the Faithmouse of the "What's the worst online comic strip?" thread?
― dorothy, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)
I think you could be onto something here. Today, our protagonist finds out what happens when one wears a nylon shirt for just over two months; tomorrow they become a 'pigeon detective' in an attempt to find out why they get covered in shit every time they step out the house

― DJ Mencap, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:31 (eighteen years ago)
it's strange that there isn't, to my knowledge, a brit indie equivilant of these comics. i guess cos amerindie is into books and comics and geekiness while britindie, well, isn't.
i was thinking more of the protagonist searching for 5live on AM for a long time. yr idea is better. keep the ideas coming, we could sell this stuff to drowned in sound!
― acrobat, Friday, 15 June 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)
On a Kerrang thread some time back we mourned long-dead K! strips and the continuing existence of Pandora... but that isn't really what we're looking for I suppose

― Tuomas, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:12 (eighteen years ago)
actually Tuomas that was the only thing on this entire thread I laughed at, but I can't explain why
― marmotwolof, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:15 (eighteen years ago)
I agree that the "hugging a mestruating woman" strip is the worst. Because, you know, when you hug a woman with mensies some blood may squirt out of her! EW!
― Tuomas, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:20 (eighteen years ago)
x-post I mean I can try, but...you know the speeches people give at AA and NA meetings about how they hit rock bottom?
― marmotwolof, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:21 (eighteen years ago)
The vampire is a long-running character. I dunno - I think Dom's posted one poor C&G strip and two good ones, so I don't know what point he's trying to make.
― Mark C, Friday, 15 June 2007 12:22 (eighteen years ago)
Okay, so hitting the rock bottom is putting Dolly Parton in your mouth, I get that. But why the teeth?

― Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 17 June 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)
also, can we throw Penny Arcade and Dustinland into the debate here? PA is occasionally funny (when the video game refs don't go over my head) but this whole genre of comics that are just a stand-in for the author wearing a band shirt and saying shit they say to their friends has got to stop. wtf happened to comics about talking animals and incongruously worldly children?

besides daybyday I think the other answer to this is http://www.little-gamers.com/
I mean it's all well and good to bitch about penny arcade, but their competition is so horribly lame it beggars the imagination to conceive of a person so lame as to put this shit up on the internet on a regular basis
guy who does PVP is clearly talented and works hard at it but his material is pretty standard soap-opera-for-nerd-alerts (cf sluggy freelance, scarygoround, etc) which gets old as hell after a while IMO- which is another reason I favor stuff like PA or even achewood, where continuity is treated as optional from week to week etc
there are seriously hundreds of webcomics that could probably be objectively rated worse than the ones pointed out on this thread so far
I've read far, far too many of them
― TOMBOT, Sunday, 17 June 2007 02:07 (eighteen years ago)

This is crazy. Cat and Girl is fantastic. Part of XKCD's charm is that it's more like a blog with random thoughts than a "webcomic" like most of the rest, so even though some of the ones you posted are cringy, it's all good in the end.
Nothing beats Pokey of course.

I hadn't noticed that the time+date on that xkcd hasn't happened. Are his avid readers meant to turn up and propose to him or something?
Anyway, uh, as a corny indie webcomic-reading fuck with a Cat and Girl t-shirt (and I don't read SARC but I used to read Mitch Clem's old comic Nothing Nice To Say, probably more because I like the way he draws characters than anything else, but it had its moments), I have to wonder if there are any webcomics you don't hate, Dom?
Really though, you want to see worse comics, go to keenspace or drunkduck and click on one at random. And if you think you've found the worst webcomic ever, just go through the archives until you see the words "guest strip", and there you'll have a link to an even worse one.
(I am really tempted to link to a friend of a friend's apparent attempts to recreate Love Is... for the Warcraft/livejournal generation, with every other strip being "hiii I was in the pub and Lisa asked me to draw her so here is some unrecognisable Photoshop-daubing with the word Lisa underneath and here is Lisa's gerbil and Lisa likes dolphins so here is a picture of a dolphin lols" "my boyfriend made me a cup of tea he is really nice and i like tea!!" "this strip was late because i am busy lol work sucks huh here is a cartoon of a pile of books and me looking sad!!! :( :(", but I could see them getting upset enough to go through the whole of ILX to find out who I am, so you'll just have to imagine that delight. Also they've improved a bit and taken the really lousy stuff down, but I'm sure there are even worse comics out there which haven't reached that stage yet.)

The explanations Mitch Clem includes underneath his strips are really something. This is for the first one posted in this thread:
Since drawing this comic, it's come to my attention that the above percentage is well over 82%. I base this information solely on the amount of people who were upset after reading said comic and started trying desperately to defend themselves. Listen you guys, you're allowed to do whatever you want, really. But I, for one, am hardly impressed to learn that you know the lyrics to a song (a song), and you will find me nothing short of annoyed if you insist on reciting said lyrics ad nauseam despite my inevitable repeated barks of "PLEASE SHUT THE FUCK UP, NO ONE CARES!".
Victoria does this, of course (anyone who knows her will be none too surprised), but the actual murder victim in the above strip is none other than Tom "Theater Hopper" Brazelton, whose insistence on reciting the "Humpty Dance" (for those of you too young to remember the "Humpty Dance", just close your eyes and try to imagine what it would sound like if the Holocaust were a rap song) once every hour the last time we were at a comic convention together was nothing short of maddening. I'm fairly certain that, at some point, he was just trying to annoy me, and it worked.
Personally, I'd say the fact that I have damn near every Boris the Sprinkler lyric memorized (including all the between-song monologues) is far more impressive, but I generally only break out that skill in the car by myself. I lead a sad, sad life.
― DJ Mencap, Thursday, 4 October 2007 09:59 (eighteen years ago)
I think xkcd may actually be worse than San Antonio Rock City. I dunno what's the most abhorrent thing about xkcd, whether it's the intellectual dishonesty, the smug self-satisfaction, the douchebag IT nerdity, or the fact that it's basically a bunch of "Whether you think you CAN, or you think you CAN'T: you're right" posters for the Open Office generation.

Is the cat drinking a bucket of paint in the first comic posted?
Also, that xkcd thing:
Sean Nichols, a graduate student from the University of Calgary, bought his plane tickets nearly six months in advance, only days after the Dream Girl comic debuted. "I had no real expectations one way or the other," Nichols said. "I just sort of figured, well, it could be a lot of antisocial people standing around sort of looking at each other, or it could be a lot of interesting interaction. And luckily, it seems to be the latter."
Though Munroe had not organized any activities, the participants found multiple ways to entertain themselves and connect with others. Several people were attempting to vertically extend tape measures without bending, a reference to the Tape Measure comic strip. Some used colorful chalk to scrawl computer code on the sidewalk.
Two creative fans even put together a poster of 100 possible conversation topics, while others simply climbed the jungle gym or used the swings. A webcam taped to the swingset broadcast the event online for those who were not able to attend the meetup.

Oh wow, I haven't read Bee in years, need to get caught up on that.
Penny Arcade is pretty great IMO, and I'm someone who is completely NOT up on video game news generally. It's kind of mixed on a regular basis but skimming over the archives you find all kinds of really hilarious ones. Also the art has gotten fantastic. And they have spun the success of their nerdy webcomic into channeling nerd dollars into children's hospitals which I think is pretty admirable. Over a million dollars last year!
This still cracks me up to this day:

― Trayce, Sunday, 7 October 2007 02:12 (eighteen years ago)
The problem with that comic is endemic of 95% of online comics that I see: there's no punchline. Its entire existence is based on the reader going "I recognize that Dead Milkmen song. Clearly this is a joke we share." When, in reality, if this was a COMIC (read: funny), the guys annoying the waitress with the Dead Milkmen song would be a SET UP.
So: There should be another panel with an actual joke in it.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 7 October 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)
Achewood at least has a quirkiness and uniqueness to it, but also it depends way too much on the reader finding quirkiness in itself amusing. "Oh, this character I'm familiar with is drawn 10 years in the future and saying 'Are you crapping.' Also 'crapping' is a funny way to say that."
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 7 October 2007 07:10 (eighteen years ago)
Also, thanks Ned for recommending Jason Little. It's pretty sweet, but it seems more comic-comic than internet comic.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Sunday, 7 October 2007 07:15 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not sure I understand the distinction but if you mean drawn to be seen in a comic rather than onscreen then you're probably right.
― Ned Trifle II, Sunday, 7 October 2007 08:37 (eighteen years ago)
Its entire existence is based on the reader going "I recognize that Dead Milkmen song. Clearly this is a joke we share."
otm but also i'm getting too olde to appreciate dicking around disguised as rebellion. there's a commercial on now where Irreverent Youth have an impromptu grocery cart race through store aisles and all i could think of was "quit the horseplay you're gonna kill somebody!" and that strip is that ad's cousin. it took mad focus groups to spew the kind of stuff he's coming up with for art's sake there's some measure of pride in that surely.

― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Sunday, 7 October 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)
from wikipedia:
"Jerkcity contains almost no character development, storyline or continuity. Primary themes it has in abundance include drinking, drug abuse, masturbation, homosexual and/or homophobic activities, gluttony, dick jokes and programming. Dialogue tends towards the absurd, incomprehensible and obscene."
this is why it's great.

― DJ Mencap, Sunday, 7 October 2007 22:49 (eighteen years ago)
To each their own. I don't know if the QC author cut-and-pasted those images or not (if you say so, I'll assume he did), but (a) it made no difference to me in terms of that strip's power and (b) upon considering it, I wouldn't want much variation in Faye's expression from panel-to-panel in that strip. Her maintaining that frozen, sad, resigned look is part of the story, it seems to me.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 7 October 2007 22:54 (eighteen years ago)
There is no way that QC comic is cut and paste, she has different facial expressions and poses ffs.

Why do you dislike Questionable Content? I'm not trying to be confrontational (as I said earlier, to each their own); I'm just curious.
― Daniel, Esq., Sunday, 7 October 2007 23:46 (eighteen years ago)
Not being confrontational:
Personally, I think QC relies way too much on it's own quirkiness.
Take this strip for example:
http://www.questionablecontent.net/comics/985.png
1. It goes out of its way to mention Dinosaur Jr to where it doesn't sound like a piece of real human dialogue 2. The ending is written to feel like a punchline, but there's no actual joke. Just an overall feeling of quirkiness. It's like reading a comic strip that's constantly making quotey fingers at you.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 8 October 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)
Plus I there's way too much dialogue!
The pictures are supposed to tell me story! Yet these huge word balloons are doing all the work.

― roxymuzak, Monday, 8 October 2007 00:30 (eighteen years ago)
Personally, I think QC relies way too much on it's own quirkiness. . . . Plus I there's way too much dialogue!
Okay, I get that. I like the D, Jr. reference (although QC can sometimes overdo this sort of stuff) and the packed dialogue, and I'm not upset by the lack of a punchline (a lot of QC's humor relies on the characters just riffing off of a sly line of dialogue, which is very different from a traditional concluding "punchline"), but I now better understand where you're coming from.

― Trayce, Monday, 8 October 2007 04:54 (eighteen years ago)
I never liked UserFriendly or Sluggy Frelance. They were the two strips all my linux-lovin, role playin', nerdy Flying Circus recitin' friends loved. Unironically.
― Trayce, Monday, 8 October 2007 04:55 (eighteen years ago)
I always found Sluggy kind of sweetly charming, it was blatantly nerdy and its longer "serious" plotlines were generally unbearable, but there was something kind of folksy and endearing about the whole operation. Maybe just because it really, REALLY predated the glut of webcomics and its site always (still? haven't checked it in ages) maintained a "Geocities 1996" look. I dunno. It's hard for me to hate a strip like that.
User Friendly was always the pits though. Also, anything in the genre of scrubby black-and-white "dark adventure" stories gives off huge red flags, especially if laden with nerdy or "controversial" material. Eg: Exploitation Now, Everrything Jake, and (by far the worst) MegaTokyo.

Fair enough. If, however, someone finds that strip either offensive or too flippant -- as they might, in light of the serious storyline behind it -- I'm only suggesting that the QC author isn't responsible for it (although I suppose he might have blessed it before it was released).
I do like Something Positive a lot of the time though so I feel less bad laughing (xpost)

That last one isn't that bad. Maybe I've become all corny in my post-Christmas snuggliness. Plenty of the earlier ones are far, far worse, and indeed devoid of any positive value. I agree that it's making a somewhat unnecessary point in a thoroughly unsubtle manner, but it has quite a few likeable details. Panels 11 to 13 are shite and kinda ruin it, I'll give you that. But the anti-love minions in bikinis portray beautifully the hypocrisy of the pro-abstinence and anti-premarital bible basher movements.

Cower in slightly sarcastic fear! The Chaosbunny is an artist by trade, geek by inclination and full-time embodiment of entropy by nature. She has no intention whatsoever of growing up, but fully intends to take over the world.Chaosbunnies thrive on a steady diet of polka dots, tea, cuddles and intellectual discussion.Jim and Tonic is an autobiographical web comic by Maxine Green that's been described as cute, geeky, quirky and silly, and occasionally poignant. Guys, I've been making my own strips lately, but every time I read this thread, it makes me go back and reconsider.
― өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 27 November 2008 18:27 (seventeen years ago)
It's better to take a chance on making a bad strip and risk a critical pounding than not to do anything at all. I mean, at the end of the day, you can at least say you did this thing even if it's not brilliant, whereas critics don't have anything to point to. Also, seeing tons of bad strips will help you not to fall into common traps, so if yr strip sucks, at least it will suck in the knowledge of suckitude.
― sheepie (libcrypt), Thursday, 27 November 2008 18:37 (seventeen years ago)
I like the one that tells you how to find the centre of a circle, I didn't know that! The explanation seems pretty clear tbh?
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Thursday, 27 November 2008 18:41 (seventeen years ago)
I think the main trap that so many of these online guys, as well as Lynn Johnston of For Better or For Worse, fall into is thinking that something haha in real life is going to be haha on the drawing board once they get all the borders connected.
In Dom's link above, there's one of the guy's baby going "dada" at some old man. Yeah, that happens and it's funny at the time, but it doesn't translate in any fashion to being funny as a comic strip.
I mean, unless that guy's drawing strips just for his family members and they all know him and his kid.
― өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

Oh, critical beatdowns aren't stopping me from drawing anything. I guess that I'm saying it's just as important to spend time looking at really bad comics as it is learning from really good cartoonists.
It's like making fun of some shitty cover band and then spending the next day just playing the bass riff to "Godzilla" over and over.
― өөө (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 27 November 2008 19:24 (seventeen years ago)
I think the main rules from these cartoons are:
1) Try to have actual proper jokes2) If you're going to bother with characterisation, bother with characterisation. Don't just give one of your guys cancer FOR DEPTH3) Don't write yourself4) Don't write a sockpuppet black/female/gay character to give some "insight" to your views5) Don't mention sci-fi. At all.

there's a rhythmic jolt between the 3rd and 4th panels that makes it impossible to rap these lines properly. it would work if it were "so kick back relax, let me put on some Adele for ya/ and tell you why I'm running for the town of Philadelphia," but as it is, you'd either have to throw your rhythm totally off or insert an awkward extra beat between "ya" and "while". c'mon, Randall Patrick Munroe, sort it out!
