the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

I don't trust this guy, the ladies love him too much.

n/a, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

that's because he is adorable

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

he's done some crap lately

akm, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah but Con Air has Nic Cage = ultimate frowny face.

jessie monster, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Whenever he's in movies now he looks like he's wearing a bunch of mascara.

If I were to vote, I'd vote CON AIR

n/a, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

Malkovich malkovich.

chap, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:47 (eighteen years ago)

you look like you're wearing a bunch of mascara!!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

also runaway jury is not crap it also has gene hackman in it and he is a very talented gentleman and i will not have you call any of gene hackman's movies crap in my presence.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:48 (eighteen years ago)

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

I am not wearing any mascara.

n/a, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

"I SAID PUT THE BUNNY DOWN." Okay ConAir is shite but Cusack in white linen suit as fancy smarty pants city guy who is SMRT is awesome.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

I MADE A CONTROVERSIAL DECISION

HI DERE, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

I am going Grosse Pointe Blank 'cause he is hottt and shoots things in that movie.

jessie monster, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

But fuck all u I am voting for Natty Gann b/c it has A WOLF and a plucky heroine. Also I was at v impressionable tuff-girl age when it came out.

Laurel, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for the obvious choice because i am pathetic and lame

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

IDENTITY was so bad i almost threw up in the movie theater; i had a visceral reaction to how awful it was. i wanted to die.

max, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

oh my god the end of that movie is like completely batshit insane

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

LIKE I SAID, CONTROVERSIAL CHOICE

HI DERE, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

i voted for better off dead because it is HILARIOUS

bell_labs, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

the cast of that movie is amazing though. i mean ray liotta? alfred molina? waht?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

That movie is one of the greatest things ever filmed.

HI DERE, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

ugh im getting queasy just thinking about that fucking movie

max, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:53 (eighteen years ago)

WHORES DON'T GET A SECOND CHANCE

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

lololol dan you did not seriously vote for identity

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

why is there no "murder john cusack" option?

strongohulkington, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

u jealous

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Say Anything is my favourite ever film. Of all time ever since I was born. With that confessed, I am now going to run away.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

i love that guy

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

seriously if paul rudd called me right now and said "hey i'm moving to, i dunno, south africa and you should come with" i'd be like "yes you are correct" and none of you would ever see me again. same if john cusack did that actually but i think i'd prefer to live in maybe argentina in that instance.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

yeah do a paul rudd poll

max, Thursday, 14 June 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

actually serendipity is rendered vaguely classic by Walken showing up out of nowhere with boxes of reels at the end

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

of course I was just kind of desperate for anything not totally lame to happen at that point so prob. biased

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

oh paul rudd you are like a younger so therefore more attractive jon cusack

jessie monster, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

what are you implying jess, that i dont have complete control over my nonexistent girlfriend??

isn't that 'america's sweethearts'?

That one guy that quit, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

good point! belay that.

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I'm nearly a Cusack completist, but have never seen Identity, Con Air, or America's Sweethearts (notably dissed by schef). Don't you ppl fucking read reviews first?

High Fidelity will be snubbed, too close for comfort for Men of ILX.

I think of Sure Thing/Say Anything/Grosse Pte/Hi Fid as the JC ManBoy Coming of Age Tetralogy.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

that's nice.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

also v v gross.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

i mean, "manboy," ugh.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

what are you trying to do to me?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

w/o being an actual bro like paul rudd

This is an excellent point. I think Cusack is probably a lot like his High Fidelity character, all being an asshole to his friends except when he's single for a few days.

Jordan, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

WHY DON'T YOU BOYS JUST START YOUR OWN "PAUL RUDD V JOHN CUSACK" POLL IF YOU ALL FEEL SO STRONGLY ABOUT THIS

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:10 (eighteen years ago)

wouldn't you be an asshole to your friends if your friends were jack black and moby, tho?

ghost rider, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

oh ain't seen Natty Gann either.

Serendipity is about as bad as I ever wanna see from him.

There is a diff meaning of man-boy as a NOUN, you doity-minded girl. You know a 28-year-old who acts 15 (again, ILX).

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

jack black and moby are kind of like the only friends I have that I'm NOT an asshole to

jhøshea, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

Nevermind about Paul Rudd (although I wish we hung out weekly), I'm just talking about Cusack sketchiness.

Jordan, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha i'm not being dirty, morbius. i just don't like a word like "manboy." i also don't like it when kenan says "vagina." i'm picky.

really the best part of high fidelity is the fantasy scene where they beat the crap out of tim robbins.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

yes

ghost rider, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:14 (eighteen years ago)

ghost rider, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:16 (eighteen years ago)

also i cannot stand jack black at all but can tolerate high fidelity the movie.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

jack black is actually my least favorite person ever, possibly.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

btw Cusack ripped Robbins a new a-hole in press for supporting Nader in 2000. So yes, he's probably a jerk.

Hated book, refuse to see movie.

HiFid Film is different ... but probably not different enough.

High Fidelity is sort of gross but I do always watch it when it's on TV

A B C, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Tapeheads not just because it is my favorite movie ever dreamed up but also because that one part he reaches out the window (driver side!) of a moving vehicle and grabs a beer. Also because he dances more in that movie than in any other. That I've seen.

jesus stop xposting you assholes

nickalicious, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:21 (eighteen years ago)

i'm not sure i find jack black more unwatchable or nick hornby more unreadable

am i the only one who sees john cusack and sometimes thinks 'fourth Beastie'? is it the hair and sunken cheeks? the Ione connection?

wait, where is City Hall?

gabbneb, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:23 (eighteen years ago)

yes otm ban gabbneb he is ruining this thread

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

I voted Bullets Over Broadway, because I like to be alone.

kenan, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

If I thought of him as a 4th Beastie it would be because of that movie he did a cameo in that starred John Doe and Ad Rock that I always mistakenly think is called The Road To El Dorado because the most memorable moment is Ad Rock shouting IS THIS THE ROAD TO EL DORADOdododo? all Beastie style from motorcycle back.

nickalicious, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:29 (eighteen years ago)

i saw that in the theater w/my dad that was a long time ago

jhøshea, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:30 (eighteen years ago)

i probably still love 'say anything' but no wait really it's just worn thin for me and i just love its memory, which is fine

'bullets over broadway' b/c of the don't speak don't speak part and jc being a sham writer

Best film in that list may be Thin Red Line.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 15:34 (eighteen years ago)

Ivan: Anybody else who'd save Pablo Casales - perhaps the greatest cellist in the world with the possible exception of Yo-Yo Ma - from a fiery car wreck on Sunset Boulevard would be bragging about it, but not Josh. He didn't want to spoil the 11 o'clock news for you.
Norton: Don't bullshit me. I'm a big cello fan! Casales died years ago!

yeah that is completely 100% true

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:01 (eighteen years ago)

Tough call since he's been there for me at crucial moments...
Better off Dead: adolescent angst + comedy + Van Halen + claymation
Say Anything: Teenage Torture - comedy + Ione Skye
Grosse Point Blank: coming to terms with adulthood angst + comedy + bloody murder
=
Grosse Point Blank is the winner here.

HI DERE, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

(At any rate, if you pay attention you figure out what's going on way befire the big reveal.)

HI DERE, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

It's basically "The Cell" done right.

oh, well in that case, i'll run right out and get it.

kenan, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

i guessed the "twist" of Identity from the trailer.

latebloomer, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

but i'm gonna stop dissing movies for the time being. my hatorade reserves are low.

latebloomer, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)

Better Off Dead for me, too.

2for25, Thursday, 14 June 2007 18:59 (eighteen years ago)

Went for GPB. I fucking love that movie.

Trayce, Thursday, 14 June 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

I've never gotten the GPB love - is Cusack supposed to be believable as a hitman...?

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

It doesnt matter that he isnt! I just find the film really fun and funny. Esp the dialogue between Cusack and his shrink.

Trayce, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:09 (eighteen years ago)

I mean it's hardly Heat or some shit.

Trayce, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:10 (eighteen years ago)

Grosse Pointe Blank for that scene with Jeremy Piven, when he learns that a classmate's now working at a Pizza Hut: "Mm. Let's not go there."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 14 June 2007 23:26 (eighteen years ago)

"Lloyd Dobbler... all right"

Kim, Friday, 15 June 2007 00:08 (eighteen years ago)

the awesomest part of gpb=the part where akroyd is chasing cusack in the cars and cusack starts rambling something about how he can't go through with the whole thing because he is in love and it is a life-changing experience and then it cuts to akroyd saying the exact same line.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 15 June 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

one person has mentioned being john malkovitch, ONE FUCKING PERSON. there's either a pernicious backlash at work here or I am a CORNY INDIE FUXX. thing is, the movie is so unrelentingly awesome that i'm perfectly happy to accept the latter.

Just got offed, Friday, 15 June 2007 00:22 (eighteen years ago)

I wish the hell that the poll poster would actually list ALL the movies. I'd vote for Better Off Dead or for his brief five minutes in Roadside Prophets.

However, The Grifters wins for me.

Elvis Telecom, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:26 (eighteen years ago)

Hey I love Being John Malkoitch Louis, but sorry, Grosse Point Blank will never ever lose my vote.

Also where is JOAN CUSACK poll k thx

Trayce, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)

Best line in GPB is by Joan Cusack!

Describing HER high school reunion: "It was as if everyone had suddenly swelled."

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)

I will stick up for "Say Anything..." against a sea of haters but I voted for "Better Off Dead" because it might be the most realistic teen movie of all time. Especially the fact the French girl is obsessed with the LA Dodgers, and the other fact that Cusack wins the ski race against ROY FUCKING STALIN.

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:35 (eighteen years ago)

That hamburger dancing conjured my teenhood with excellent verisimilitude.

Abbott, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

Describing HER high school reunion: "It was as if everyone had suddenly swelled."

Hahaha YES I LOVE THAT LINE. And how she says it too, she has a quirky talk-out-of-one-side-of-mouth thing going on.

ALso, her "ALL RIIIIIIGHT" at the end when she is smashing up the office.

Trayce, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:41 (eighteen years ago)

And when John calls her "Sergeant Pepper". God I love that movie.

marmotwolof, Friday, 15 June 2007 01:46 (eighteen years ago)

cusack on letterman in about five minutes -- WILL YOU BE WATCHING

Dimension 5ive, Friday, 15 June 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)

Ok you want to know that damn truth about why I don't like John Cusack? It's because I have a cat named Dobbler. As in, Lloyd, yes. I did not name this cat, my girlfriend and her hen house named this cat... I had no say. As many times as I explained that this is a girl kitten, they insisted that no, these little tufts of hair clearly indicate a boy. I tried to fight. I tried to say, "You city bitches, I have seen more cat genitalia than you can dream of -- we had tomcats in the barn and kittens squeezed out on the back steps." Nevermind that. It was VERY IMPORTANT to name this cat after a John Cusack character.

So now I have a cat that I cannot rename, that is of course a girl, that is named fucking "Dobbler."

kenan, Friday, 15 June 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not bitter.

kenan, Friday, 15 June 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)

Kenan, once again your logic is peccable.

kenan, Friday, 15 June 2007 04:30 (eighteen years ago)

A B C, Friday, 15 June 2007 04:32 (eighteen years ago)

Dobbler is a fine name for a girl

marmotwolof, Friday, 15 June 2007 05:06 (eighteen years ago)

it actually kind works, yeah. She a great cat, ask anyone who's met her, she's a sweetie. I guess I'm just mad because she's my cat now, and stuck with a name I did not pick.

kenan, Friday, 15 June 2007 05:07 (eighteen years ago)

I wanted name her "Quizno"

so wtf do I know

kenan, Friday, 15 June 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

It reminds me girls named Greer or MacKenzie or some other random (usually) surname. Plus it's a cat so who gives a shit. Surely not the cat.

marmotwolof, Friday, 15 June 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

That or "Huxtable"

COME ON! These are great unisex pet names.

kenan, Friday, 15 June 2007 05:10 (eighteen years ago)

Alex in Baltimore, Friday, 15 June 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

i'm just going to presume that kenan was planning on naming the kitten princess sparklepants, since he's so hung up on how "dobbler" is not a "girl name"

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 15 June 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

or he was just going to call it vagina

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Friday, 15 June 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

It's Dobler w/ one B, and you could pretend it's named after Conrad.

Shakey, the GPB hitman thing is a metaphor for a morally indefensible job, like the ones most of us have.

There's a million-dollar movie pitch in this.

Seconded or thirded or whatever on the love for the inexplicably not-included The Sure Thing. I somehow appear to never have seen Say Anything, which seems wrong given my deep love for both teen films and John Cusack. He even made Serendipity nearly not horrible, FFS.

ailsa, Saturday, 16 June 2007 14:52 (eighteen years ago)

actually, his puppeteer character is the most ILX one.

Dr Morbius, Saturday, 16 June 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

It's a shame True Colors wasn't in this poll. Spader AND Cusack doing some intense politico screen-sharing (and Spader's actually the good guy).

How many times a pivotal scene in a John Cusack film involve him sitting or standing in the rain at night? I can only think of Say Anything and High Fidelity, but it seems like it happens more often than that.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 2 August 2010 06:45 (fifteen years ago)

two years pass...

One of the most iconic ‘80s movie moments by one of the most iconic ’80s movie stars is in 1989’s Say Anything. John Cusack’s Lloyd Dobler, in a last-ditch attempt at wooing the girl of his dreams, hoists a boombox over his head blasting Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes.” Even people who haven’t seen the movie likely know the scene.

In a surprise appearance over the weekend, Cusack made a cameo at the Hollywood Bowl for Peter Gabriel’s concert commemorating the 25th anniversary of his breakout album, So. During the portion of the concert where Gabriel revisited the seminal classic, Cusack handed the boombox to Gabriel who launched into song as he held it over his own head. Say Anything director Cameron Crowe was also in attendance and received a shout-out later in the show.

scott seward, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:09 (seven years ago)

this guy is probably one of the few actors who i thought was pretty cool and just did a complete 180 and went to shit

he seems to have some interesting ideas but they don't transfer over to his actual work/characters

F# A# (∞), Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:17 (seven years ago)

i feel like he doesn't have a place in nu-Hollywood. He should do the TV show route or show up in a Marvel movie, i guess those are the remaining two options for any actor now.

omar little, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:20 (seven years ago)

he looks like he plays a lot of poker in vegas or something. he's not THAT old.

scott seward, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:21 (seven years ago)

I loved him as Nixon in The Butler, would happily watch an John-Cusack-as-Nixon mini-series on HBO.

he's great in The Paperboy as well, I think he's best when playing creeps, weirdos and/or perverts

soref, Thursday, 1 March 2018 18:21 (seven years ago)

all his photos in recent years he even looks like a poker player. lots of baseball caps. i think maybe he partied vv hard after the Cubs won the Series.

There's an old Hollywood maxim that you can only play what you're offered. And when he was a medium-wattage movie star, when it came to producing his own stuff it eventually ended with the very underwhelming War, Inc.

Anyway the guy had a p decent run for 20 years beginning in '85. I didn't like the films that Cronenberg and Spike Lee cast him in, but as long as he's on the radar of guys like that he should be OK for character parts.
