ban everyone who doesn't vote for bill & ted

A B C, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

single vote for johnny mnemonic is me, bcz of the room service monologue basically, and the computer hacking in TCP/3D

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

ally i am trying to work here and now i'm totally distracted by keanu

rrrobyn, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

point break, speed, and the devil's advocate are also acceptable votes though is the thing. though really bill & ted is the best film ever made.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

keanu reeves looks like my cousin.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:23 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like him as much as the others but this is a harder choice.

I love Johnny Mnemonic!

Jordan, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

this is weird but i really liked him in that movie where he gets together with diane keaton. i didn't like that movie so much but i liked that part.

rrrobyn, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:24 (eighteen years ago)

he is very good playing a fake james dean character in that paula abdul video.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

grow up and vote Pvt Idaho.

J Mnemonic is horrifying.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

keanu has been in more good movies than rudd and cusack combined--but point break is the ultimate all time classic

max, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:25 (eighteen years ago)

if growing up means preferring my own private idaho to bill & ted's excellent adventure, then kill me now

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

Much Ado About Nothing, lol

gabbneb, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)

he's better in Much Ado than K Branagh.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

^^^^ otm!

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

he's a totally horrible actor who has been in some great great movies.

And the correct answer is River's Edge (even tho Crispin's role is better)

and wait there's a movie missing from this list - Permanent something...? where he has a friend who commits suicide and they have a shitty rock band... Lou Reed is in it and Joe Strummer wrote "Trash City" for the sdtk. It isn't very good.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:29 (eighteen years ago)

permanent record.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

it is kind of lame that the gene hackman movie with keanu in it is about the 1987 redskins

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

I also wd like to borrow B&T's time machine and see Keanu in the Vancouver production of Hamlet that he starred in.

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:30 (eighteen years ago)

man i cried over that hard ball movie

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

I would feel unfair to myself if I didn't vote for Point Break, but Bill & Ted is my runner-up, should Point Break not be able to serve its duties.

kenan, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

but other than that shakey mo and dr morbius are as usual total know-nothings when it comes to the movies

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

ppl should not be all "hey it's a funny movie about keanu coaching a little league team" and then all mix it up with crazy sad shit

TOMBOT, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

oh don't even start with this shit that you were all expecting that little kid to die

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

I really dig Pvt Idaho but ugh those Shakespeare monologues

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

i remember when that was my favourite movie. i was a teenager.

btw The Lake House was better than it had any right to be

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 14 June 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)

I'm voting BOGUS JOURNEY. One of the rare sequels that's better than the original. I also like Constantine and Parenthood probably more than I should.

J.D., Friday, 15 June 2007 04:33 (eighteen years ago)

his best character after Scott Favor is Siddhartha.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

I actually meant to do a Keanu poll last week. Point Break anyway because Bill & Ted is more about Alex Winter for me.

blueski, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

My Own Private Idaho, naturally. Could he have played Mike Waters too?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)

morbs - little buddha stupidest movie evar

jhøshea, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

He was also pretty good in that Cate Blanchett movie in which he plays sullen white trash.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:48 (eighteen years ago)

yes! i was surprised, i don't think i've seen him act better than in The Gift

blueski, Friday, 15 June 2007 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

The Gift is terrible though - it has the most predictable twists imaginable.

"I like the stars. It's the illusion of permanence, I think. I mean, they're always flaring up and caving in and going out. But from here, I can pretend… I can pretend that things last. I can pretend that lives last longer than moments. Gods come, and gods go. Mortals flicker and flash and fade. Worlds don't last; and stars and galaxies are transient, fleeting things that twinkle like fireflies and vanish into cold and dust. But I can pretend. " - Keanu Reeves

He made news by refusing to take part in Speed 2: Cruise Control and choosing to play the title role in a 1995 Manitoba Theatre Centre production of Hamlet in Winnipeg, Manitoba.[7] Roger Lewis, the Sunday Times critic, wrote, "He quite embodied the innocence, the splendid fury, the animal grace of the leaps and bounds, the emotional violence, that form the Prince of Denmark...He is one of the top three Hamlets I have seen, for a simple reason: he * is* Hamlet."

Good to see that Keanu is finally enjoying himself this summer after the sad Keanu sitting on a bench photos, and hopefully we'll get more updates about his emotional health as the summer heads into the home stretch.

Cunga, Friday, 2 July 2010 06:41 (fifteen years ago)

<3 Keanu

Is there any verification of him hanging with Alex Winter 'cause that would totally make my day.

lowwave (S-), Friday, 2 July 2010 06:56 (fifteen years ago)

"Story:
My buddy from high school sells and he was bringing some shit over to my place. Keanu is his cousin and he came with him. Not very exciting at all other than the fact that it's Keanu."

The pictures are great examples of this. Just a dude, his girlfriend, his dog and Keanu, just chilling at a park. Awesome story imo.

he is the best at killing people, it's true, but he's not really conflicted about it - those motherfuckers killed his dog and he will get his revenge. it's about as straightforward as it could be and it's too deadpan gleeful about it to be gritty. it's really a stripped-to-the-bone mash note to fight choreography.

so this piece got a lot of attention this week.

I’ve found myself attracted to Keanu’s presence because of the way he marries typically masculine and feminine qualities. He’s both intense and vulnerable, kind and tough, honest and mysterious. Keanu, of course, isn’t the first star to exist at the crossroads of virile and vulnerable. Actors like James Dean, Montgomery Clift, and Paul Newman embody a similar alchemy that have drawn women (and men) to them. But these actors often seem to fight against the lustful gaze of the camera, while Keanu supplants himself to it. Where they seem cynical, disinterested, or too wounded as a romantic lead, Keanu is utterly open.

I guess I fall into the standard crit line about him - he has his virtues, but the gap between his good and bad movies is vast, and his hit:miss ratio is quite bad.

keanu is a benediction, a blessing, a bestowance of cool breezes. keanu is the bodhisattva but he also confronts the bodhi, and grants him the space to annihilate himself inside the wave.

the world moves around keanu. when he moves at all, people claim that it is inauthentic and they sneer and poke at his ribs, but still the birds are fed.

i figure his woodenness works in certain roles because that's who he's often playing: a character who doesn't necessarily understand the script or the rules of the world he's been tossed into, repeats the lines in the voice of the character he's been given because there's nothing else to do, and eventually comes to realize his purpose is to simply add mass to the diegetic reality he's in so it changes the orbits of the others around him, and he's ok with that.

slugbuggy, Saturday, 13 February 2016 08:09 (nine years ago)

i don't think the world truly appreciates how fortunate it is to have had keanu and swayze appear together in the same filmspace.

well i guess it depends on the individual. the lake house was corny but i loved it for keanu. knock knock is a thriller/horror which isn't my typical type of movie. but the story was totally utterly stupid and the acting was lame from the whole cast. so if you're not normally down for romance movies, lake house still might be the worst.

I really dug JW2 - it's not as lean as the first movie, some of the set pieces are overlong but for the most part I think it's a worthy sequel & I liked it so much I saw it twice

Chris Hardwick said the Continental network of purveyors was like Diagon Alley in Harry Potter & I cant unsee it now, lol

What was the thing Peter Serafinowicz the Sommelier was wearing around his neck? It looked like a sink strainer

Somehow I missed the whole thing with stairs & descent first time round: literally every set-piece begins with or involves him "descending" - underground to the catacombs, staircases, escalators, elevators. Maybe too on the nose for some but I was into it.

And the "Reflections of the Soul" exhibition scenes looked fantastic I thought.

Ruby Rose too - they have to keep pressure on each other's knives so they're always throwing knives/guns to each other.

I seen both films recently. I think they're okay but I liked that they concentrated so much on the action because it seems to me most big action films get bogged down in a load of character drama and plot that they can barely muster or pretend they care. Maybe it's because Keanu is one of the few stars outside East Asia that can carry that much action.

Robert Adam Gilmour, Friday, 3 March 2017 16:10 (eight years ago)

Hyperbolic headline notwithstanding, this writeup p much nails what I dig about the John Wick movies in particular

http://www.vulture.com/2017/02/keanu-reeves-is-our-greatest-action-star.html

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 3 March 2017 16:51 (eight years ago)

and it dovetails with Robert Adam Gimour's post somewhat re Keanu & Asian action

Flamenco Drop (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 3 March 2017 16:52 (eight years ago)

that's a good article. i think the John Wick flicks also resemble in some ways the Chow-Yun Fat movie Full Contact, with their revenge arcs, though latter movie doesn't have nearly as much humor. The world created for the movies and the casual way in which its depicted and the offhand manner in which its explained (which is to say not at all) is also pretty key. and the insistence on a color palette revolving around black and blue and red and purple vs teal and orange is vv nice.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY

xxposts to Jim in Vancouver -- I'm not saying you should watch it if you're not feeling it. but, the best thing about the movie is that the indignity of that sweet dog's death is 100% channelled through the action of the entire movie, it's not just a throwaway gimmick. imo. so if you've ever wanted someone who did that to a dog to get a comeuppance on the biblical level, this movie sees that through to its excellent conclusion. if you want.

first movie has a *way* better bad guy and i felt like reeves needed that to push against - it felt like he was "beating insurmountable odds" whereas in the second movie he's just mass slaughtering a bunch of redshirt dopes

they're both super fun, though! no question

they're gonna make these till Keanu physically can't anymore AFAICT xp

resident hack (Simon H.), Friday, 18 January 2019 17:36 (seven years ago)

the main bad guys are both having a lot of fun with the roles i thought though Nyqvist was better in that regard. JW2 is awesome, JW1 is slightly moreso.

omar little, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:44 (seven years ago)

in JW1 i think Ruby Rose was fantastic, everyone was really. But I think it gets slightly repetitive in a way the first one does not. but it only starts to feel that way deep into the third act, vs earlier on. It just takes the edge off the film for me. The first one has a better upward movement through the ranks to get to the final showdown, and a more righteous mission.

again this is really an argument I don't like to make since both films are considerably outstanding.

omar little, Friday, 18 January 2019 17:47 (seven years ago)

Bill & Ted's is unwatchable garbage. I know because recently I tried to watch it and it is just... very bad. it is poorly made, there are no actual jokes etc.

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 18 January 2019 20:06 (seven years ago)

JW2 couldn't have the best thing about JW1, the sequence where John Leguizamo slaps the kids and then starts pounding whiskey, knowing what's about to go down, then Viggo explaining things while shirtless Keanu sledgehammers up his past

louise ck (milo z), Friday, 18 January 2019 20:18 (seven years ago)

sorry but nothing in JW1 matches the giddy absurdity of the hilariously deadpan subway "shootout" in the second one

resident hack (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 January 2019 07:15 (seven years ago)

These films are fun when there’s shooting but when they grind to a halt in order to show you the inner workings of hitman hogwarts it’s embarrassing and actively tedious, is my unpopular opinion

gray say nah to me (wins), Saturday, 19 January 2019 07:24 (seven years ago)

idk the cut from Fishburne laughing on the roof to Fishburne laughing (presumably minutes later) in the inner sanctum of his lair is pretty fucking funny imo

gray say nah to me (wins), Saturday, 19 January 2019 07:51 (seven years ago)

I'm gonna have to rewatch 1 to compare. idk JW2 is full of unique gags that I can't dismiss. also in that sequence: making a big deal out of only having secen shots, then using them all up within about six seconds when he gets to the function

resident hack (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 January 2019 07:53 (seven years ago)

*seven

resident hack (Simon H.), Saturday, 19 January 2019 07:53 (seven years ago)

John Wick the first is unfuckwithable because of its deceptive simplicity

John Wick 2 is too in love with itself & too many set pieces go on for WAY longer than they need to BUT is still v good & the colors & settings are cool & “down into hell” descending motif is good i like it

Squeaky Fromage (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 19 January 2019 07:58 (seven years ago)

something I really appreciate about both movies is how they don't feel the need to insert "clever" quips into their action scenes; plenty of minutes at a time go by with no dialogue at all but they don't make a big deal of it

three months pass...

how is it possible we don't have a dedicated john wick thread

new one's out this week and the reviews are encouraging (to the extent that I'm suspicious)

Simon H., Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:22 (six years ago)

this is going to to be the wickiest of the icky

a Mets fan who gave up on everything in the mid '80s (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:36 (six years ago)

The first review I read was negative, but it was by David Edelstein, who's a dipshit.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:42 (six years ago)

Edelstein was complaining about John Wick being pretentious, idk. i mean that's part of the joke.

omar little, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 15:57 (six years ago)

the movie or the character

deemsthelarker (darraghmac), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 16:08 (six years ago)

I don't think Edelstein knows what "pretentious" means.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 16:09 (six years ago)

sometimes I think about this series and how they added a bunch of content that seems portentous and maybe a little overwrought, but then I rewatch one of the movies and it's a bunch of well-shot action scenes with a somewhat goofy backdrop of a plot and I love the hell out of it

mh, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 16:56 (six years ago)

I mean, if you're seeing Laurence Fishburne's appearance as completely in-context and not noticing it's a metatextual joke at the same time...

mh, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 16:57 (six years ago)

I just saw John Wick for the first time a month ago. I think I always had it confused with John Carter.

I was amazed a little about the lack of plot, but I was sad about the dog so what do I know.

Yerac, Tuesday, 14 May 2019 16:58 (six years ago)

imo these movies are improved by the addition of a dense network of deeply silly supporting characters so the new one sounds like my ideal

Simon H., Tuesday, 14 May 2019 17:01 (six years ago)

I bought the first two movies this weekend as a 4-disc set (each movie comes on DVD and Blu-Ray; I'm probably gonna slip the DVDs into envelopes and give them to my brother). I don't actually know how interested I am in the third. The first one is better than the second, because the more you learn about Wickworld the more ridiculous it becomes, and not necessarily in a good way. It's kind of like the Jason Bourne movies in that way - the first could have stood alone, and the deeper into the series it got, the less fun it was.

shared unit of analysis (unperson), Tuesday, 14 May 2019 17:03 (six years ago)

the series so far has been action movie heaven for me: basic plot, enjoyable set-pieces & Keanu being awesome
#2 more baroque & def more story than i needed but thats forgivable bcz the action is still A+

Destination Wedding was weird. I remember laughing really hard one time but otherwise it was about two very attractive, miserable people that seem to give up on life and decide to be together.

A lot of people seem unaware of this but aside from the KID profiles, Netflix also has parental controls. You can set shows above a certain rating to be accessible only with a PIN.

Has Keanu played a light-hearted or goofy (or even expressive) character in the last two decades? the Wicks are the only things I've seen since the first Matrix on VHS, but I get the impression that he's pretty much all stonefaced all the time. RIP Parenthood Keanu.

He was charming in a supporting role in Something's Gotta Give, and the movie is so chickenshit about EWWW GRANNIES HAVING SEX that Nancy Meyers couldn't conceive of a scenario where Diane Keaton and Keanu end up married fucking the shit out of each other.

god I love how he still can't grow a full beard so much

It looks like they fill it in for John Wick!

Keanu is awesome for keeping himself out of the spotlight so well. I don't know much about him or his private life, but he does seem to be massively generous. I remember hearing the stories of him gifting the Matrix FX team millions of dollars, among other things, and thinking: this is a good guy. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he got John Wick 1 made as a favor to his Matrix friends. Wasn't the director his stunt double?

Basically, Keanu seems like Tom Cruise if Tom Cruise were not a weirdo trying to lure people into Scientology. Unless Keanu is a total weirdo, too, but is keeping it quiet.

xpost Thanks for that Yerac - I did think that the Wick movies were *about* Keanu as well as made for him, but wasn't sure how to put it into words as well as that piece did.

And I'm really loving all the sweet Keanu stories that have been coming out throughout this press tour.

Here’s one. Keanu bought the house and property that is now my son’s preschool and handed it all over to the kids...not because he himself had a kid that went there. He had no connection to it at all. He just heard they needed a place and so bought it for them. https://t.co/VcZ67M6pTK

A couple staying in my hotel got on my elevator beaming, and I found out it was because they had just met Keanu Reeves, who was out walking on Hollywood Boulevard. They complimented him on his work and he said thank you and shook both their hands & they had a nice conversation.

I haven't seen it but he apparently did 13 episodes of detective comedy Swedish Dicks, basically as a favour for Peter Stormare.

And it's divisive but I loved his deadpan, depressive Constantine. Plus goofy voice-over work as Keanu the cat, the upcoming Toy Story 4, etc.

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2019/may/18/keanu-reeves-grief-loss--bill-ted-john-wick-actor-tragedy

In the 1980s and 1990s, he was offered every hot young part under the sun, including the lead in Platoon (which went to Charlie Sheen) and Val Kilmer’s role in Heat. But when I ask if he regrets turning any of them down, he smiles and instantly replies, “No.” He also turned down a $12m pay cheque to make Speed 2 because he, rightly, thought the plot was nonsense, which resulted in him being shut out of 20th Century Fox films for the next 11 years (and no, he doesn’t regret that, either). He is about to start shooting Bill & Ted Face The Music, in which the now fiftysomething duo have to write a song so good it will save the universe. “There has to be a reason for making a movie, and the writers have come up with a good ‘why’ for telling the story,” he says. When I ask what gives him an ego boost, given that he’s not driven by money or fame, he is so baffled by the idea of his ego needing a boost that he is silent for a full 28 seconds before finally answering, “The work.”

omar little, Sunday, 19 May 2019 19:05 (six years ago)

Saw John Wick 3 and enjoyed it very much. Simplicity of the first is still the most appealing to me of the 3 but the setpieces are still so, SO good. He has not had a serious girlfriend in decades it seems, and has never been affectionate with a woman while on the red carpet during his 35 year career.

But that changed this weekend when Keanu Reeves held hands with business collaborator Alexandra Grant at the LACMA Art + Film Gala Presented By Gucci in Los Angeles.

The actor, 55, and the artist, 46, never let go of each other as they exchanged loving glances while posing for dozens of photos in front of the international press, proving they had nothing to hide

1) obviously it takes a dedicated super-martial-artist / performer to spend the best part of a year learning and enacting that choreography so no it could not be played by anyone

2) the specifics of his blankness are, for real, extremely nuanced throughout the film. the first was him putting on a mask, a hated piece of armour that his entire identity was built on having shed, and alternating between that and exhausting grief - not just the breaking down scenes, but the tearing hollow emptiness that you feel having to go about any daily activities when someone has been torn out of existence. the second was him accepting that he had an obligation to fulfill, and he keeps that visible above (and as a cover for) his conflicting resentment/regret over being drawn back into the rules of the Continental / High Table, and the satisfaction he takes from being so good at what he trained for. the third sees him play tones of "blankness" ranging from shutting out all internal distractions from immediate survival, to sorrow over past hurt he committed on others, to 100% in-the-moment focus on tasks & fights, to desperation over how far out of control events have spun / stubbornness that he absolutely will not change course for anything, to various glimmers of how badly he has shut himself off emotionally & from basic human connection, especially when McShane sets up outs for him, or when Dacascos breaks kayfabe.
