keanu is a benediction, a blessing, a bestowance of cool breezes. keanu is the bodhisattva but he also confronts the bodhi, and grants him the space to annihilate himself inside the wave.

the world moves around keanu. when he moves at all, people claim that it is inauthentic and they sneer and poke at his ribs, but still the birds are fed.

i figure his woodenness works in certain roles because that's who he's often playing: a character who doesn't necessarily understand the script or the rules of the world he's been tossed into, repeats the lines in the voice of the character he's been given because there's nothing else to do, and eventually comes to realize his purpose is to simply add mass to the diegetic reality he's in so it changes the orbits of the others around him, and he's ok with that.

i don't think the world truly appreciates how fortunate it is to have had keanu and swayze appear together in the same filmspace.

well i guess it depends on the individual. the lake house was corny but i loved it for keanu. knock knock is a thriller/horror which isn't my typical type of movie. but the story was totally utterly stupid and the acting was lame from the whole cast. so if you're not normally down for romance movies, lake house still might be the worst.

Somehow I missed the whole thing with stairs & descent first time round: literally every set-piece begins with or involves him "descending" - underground to the catacombs, staircases, escalators, elevators. Maybe too on the nose for some but I was into it.

And the "Reflections of the Soul" exhibition scenes looked fantastic I thought.

I seen both films recently. I think they're okay but I liked that they concentrated so much on the action because it seems to me most big action films get bogged down in a load of character drama and plot that they can barely muster or pretend they care. Maybe it's because Keanu is one of the few stars outside East Asia that can carry that much action.

that's a good article. i think the John Wick flicks also resemble in some ways the Chow-Yun Fat movie Full Contact, with their revenge arcs, though latter movie doesn't have nearly as much humor. The world created for the movies and the casual way in which its depicted and the offhand manner in which its explained (which is to say not at all) is also pretty key. and the insistence on a color palette revolving around black and blue and red and purple vs teal and orange is vv nice.

first movie has a *way* better bad guy and i felt like reeves needed that to push against - it felt like he was "beating insurmountable odds" whereas in the second movie he's just mass slaughtering a bunch of redshirt dopes

in JW1 i think Ruby Rose was fantastic, everyone was really. But I think it gets slightly repetitive in a way the first one does not. but it only starts to feel that way deep into the third act, vs earlier on. It just takes the edge off the film for me. The first one has a better upward movement through the ranks to get to the final showdown, and a more righteous mission.

again this is really an argument I don't like to make since both films are considerably outstanding.

John Wick 2 is too in love with itself & too many set pieces go on for WAY longer than they need to BUT is still v good & the colors & settings are cool & “down into hell” descending motif is good i like it

something I really appreciate about both movies is how they don't feel the need to insert "clever" quips into their action scenes; plenty of minutes at a time go by with no dialogue at all but they don't make a big deal of it

sometimes I think about this series and how they added a bunch of content that seems portentous and maybe a little overwrought, but then I rewatch one of the movies and it's a bunch of well-shot action scenes with a somewhat goofy backdrop of a plot and I love the hell out of it

I mean, if you're seeing Laurence Fishburne's appearance as completely in-context and not noticing it's a metatextual joke at the same time...

I just saw John Wick for the first time a month ago. I think I always had it confused with John Carter.

I was amazed a little about the lack of plot, but I was sad about the dog so what do I know.

imo these movies are improved by the addition of a dense network of deeply silly supporting characters so the new one sounds like my ideal

I bought the first two movies this weekend as a 4-disc set (each movie comes on DVD and Blu-Ray; I'm probably gonna slip the DVDs into envelopes and give them to my brother). I don't actually know how interested I am in the third. The first one is better than the second, because the more you learn about Wickworld the more ridiculous it becomes, and not necessarily in a good way. It's kind of like the Jason Bourne movies in that way - the first could have stood alone, and the deeper into the series it got, the less fun it was.

the series so far has been action movie heaven for me: basic plot, enjoyable set-pieces & Keanu being awesome

A lot of people seem unaware of this but aside from the KID profiles, Netflix also has parental controls. You can set shows above a certain rating to be accessible only with a PIN.

I used to work somewhere (mid 2000s?) that had a lot of celebs regularly wandering around. Keanu was the only one where people dropped what they were doing and ran out trying to get a glimpse.

Oddly enough Vanessa Paradis was the only one that I ever saw that had photogs surrounding her.

He filmed a particularly dumb movie on my college campus in the '90s, at just about peak Keanu, and so many people were jockeying for assistant/coffee type positions on the production to be around him.

Heard a story from a friend who canvassed/fundraised for Obama and ended up at Keanu's house, and apparently K invited him in and was extremely nice.

I remember hearing the stories of him gifting the Matrix FX team millions of dollars, among other things, and thinking: this is a good guy. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if he got John Wick 1 made as a favor to his Matrix friends. Wasn't the director his stunt double?

1) obviously it takes a dedicated super-martial-artist / performer to spend the best part of a year learning and enacting that choreography so no it could not be played by anyone

2) the specifics of his blankness are, for real, extremely nuanced throughout the film. the first was him putting on a mask, a hated piece of armour that his entire identity was built on having shed, and alternating between that and exhausting grief - not just the breaking down scenes, but the tearing hollow emptiness that you feel having to go about any daily activities when someone has been torn out of existence. the second was him accepting that he had an obligation to fulfill, and he keeps that visible above (and as a cover for) his conflicting resentment/regret over being drawn back into the rules of the Continental / High Table, and the satisfaction he takes from being so good at what he trained for. the third sees him play tones of "blankness" ranging from shutting out all internal distractions from immediate survival, to sorrow over past hurt he committed on others, to 100% in-the-moment focus on tasks & fights, to desperation over how far out of control events have spun / stubbornness that he absolutely will not change course for anything, to various glimmers of how badly he has shut himself off emotionally & from basic human connection, especially when McShane sets up outs for him, or when Dacascos breaks kayfabe.

My theory is that John Wick exists in a universe where the Enlightenment and Reformation mostly never happened and all of the assassin stuff is known by the world at large but it's treated as an extension of pre-modern privateer rules and Catholic secret society shit.

My favorite ridiculous thing about the Wick films is not that there is a secret society of assassins but that seemingly every single person in the world belongs to this society, which sort of negates the need for secrecy. I love it, so dumb.
