I'll start.

The image is a crop taken from a botanical engraving (I have no drawing talent). I had them letterpressed in Pantone 350U on these great chipboard sleeves by Stumptown in Portland, who were a pleasure to work with.

Nath, trumps thread.
I would show my latest fabric creation but it's sister is meant for an ILx0r so I don't want to spoil the suprise.

hahahaha the baby pic trumps everything! ILX is just like America's Funniest Videos.
i love her no-nonsense look.

OK, I know that DDBs are not as cuet as babies, but this is what I have been working on most recently:
http://farm1.static.flickr.com/206/493469805_c9c249741c.jpg
Have been asked to do album artwork and tour posters for other bands off the back of it, so I'm quite pleased.

(just to say i appreciate the attempt at a thread with content amongst all these polls. unfortunately i have nothing to add - working 7 days a week does tend to sap my (already limited) creativity)
nat's cheating - that was a joint effort 8)

Is that pen and ink or Photoshop, Kate? I like it!
― caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:09 (eighteen years ago)
Pen and ink, scanned into photoshop. I did it very drunk in the back of a pub, while Teh Early Yares were playing - am trying to set up doing a proper version but have been out of drawing order with my wrist, and we don't seem to be able to set up a sitting becuase they are flaeky.
― Masonic Boom, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:11 (eighteen years ago)
Does this count? maybe. not really.

The only real creative stuff I've been doing lately is writing but that's not really showable. And php/MySQL coding. I've been fobbing off all of my graphic work to the intern lately.
― Ms Misery, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:12 (eighteen years ago)

Kaet and Cake: your drawings/engravings are great!
― StanM, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)
Ophelia is great too of course, Nathalie, but you didn't actually, like, design her, or did you?
― StanM, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)
xxpost It's the Big Wheel at the Links Market (an annual event in my hometown where the esplanade gets taken over by a fairground for a weekend in April). It looks much better on the album cover after all the post-processing because in real life it looks a bit shabby.
― treefell, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)
Is the Links Market still going? Blimey. Most of the other Fife coast fairs have dwindled away to nothing.
― aldo, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)
Kate, your pen and ink would look great as a woodcut. Probably not if you carved it with with a busted wrist though.
I love the green/brown tiles. Art+Design-y home decor is definitely on topic.
And the colours on that ferris wheel _are_ pretty.
― caek, Friday, 15 June 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)
treefell, it's a great image and a great font, but the placement of the word "saint" really bothers me. it just seems to be hanging out by itself too much....a little to the right and a litte closer to 'jude', maybe? i dunno, but gosh, it's really bothering me.

xpost It's just the way it worked out. I was trying to put more life into the font so I printed out each word onto a separate piece of paper, photographed it and imported it into photoshop for post processing. Each word ended up being off horizontal and out of scale with the others. So when I first put them together on the image they pretty much came out looking like that against each other. I liked it - the words were independent and part of the whole at the same time and it gave the logo a unique look. I suppose the 'saint' could be a bit distracting, but I'm so used to it now that I can't imagine it any other way.

the banquet is actually a bit of a disappointment to me - the buttoning should be deeper but hey, you get what you can afford. also i'm quite pleased that there are actually more seats than there were originally but the place looked absolutely full of chairs before.

i'm surprised dom earworm hasn't got you to do art for him shakey
I wouldn't say no, but he was, um uncommunicative when we tried to get something together in the past (previous incarnation of the band was slated to be one of earworm's final releases - didn't work out)
― Shakey Mo Collier, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)
(but hey anybody who wants some artwork done point 'em my way, I work for cheap and/or free)
GAH you guys are all fucking awesome. I hade no idea you did (extremely spectacular) arts, Shakey Mo.
Yr mouf painting is incredible (and incredibly creepy) Jeff.
And to answer yr question, PP, it was just with some inky ball point, like a midline-price 12-pack kind you get from office supply stores, and a Sharpie to fill in the blacker fields. Same as comics, yeah. If I want to print or scan them, I usually just photocopy them first, which yields crisp lines & perfectly even black fields w/out scratchy pen/overlapping Sharpie marks.
― Abbott, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:22 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't get to photocopy that one (it's the original), so it still has sharpie overlap lines. :(
― Abbott, Friday, 15 June 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)

I've gotta go right now but briefly process is - pencil sketch->lightbox + black old-school rapidograph pen->scan into photoshop->fill in colors
altho sometimes I'll add the colors prior to scanning and kinda work with those in photoshop

Damn, Caek, how'd you get that job designing record sleeves?
I love yr work, but I'm jealous coz I'd like to do what you are doing.
(Actually, that said, I have been asked to do a record sleeve based on my flyer designs.)
Here is another band I saw recently, the Sian Alice Group:

Annoyingly, that is not my job. My real job is grad school. But I has a record label which I run in my spare time (http://www.dreamboatrecords.co.uk/). It's kind of taken off, so I don't run everything in the way I used to, but I still run it to the extent that I get to stamp my foot and insist that I do the design, i.e. the website and the sleeves, because that's the bit I enjoy the most. That and the babes and the salvia. I don't get paid for anything though.
Good luck with your sleeve Kate. It will look great, especially if you get the colours printed well! Stumptown can help here, if you don't mind the carbon footprint of ordering from Portland. Get them to send you a batch of print samples.
― caek, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)
See, the design is the fun bit! All the other stuff is the crap bits, so it's good if you have minions to offload all the other things.
That isn't the sleeve design - I haven't finished that yet. The sleeve is gonna be printing it in sepia on an aged antique looking background. I don't know if it's me going to be looking into how to do that sort of thing or the label (I don't know the label at all, how much control they keep). But I love the way that your sleeves turn out, so I will suggest Stumptown.

I'm starting to think about giving up music to concentrate on the art. Well, not giving up, so much as changing my primary focus or whatever. I've been enjoying it more - but maybe the enjoyment is down to lack of pressure?
At the Bella Union show last night, then had live screen printing of posters, which looked pretty amazing, and then they were selling them as soon as they dried. I was entranced. I bought a poster - because they were beautiful - but also because I was curious about the results that you could achieve with screen printing. It was beautifully done.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 11 July 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)
caek, not only is that artwork great but the record is terrific too. I will be buying.

Kate, if you ever figure out screen printing, I would be interested in talking more. I'm finding the information online pretty difficult to make sense of. I keep meaning to book myself into the course here: http://www.oxfordprintmakers.co.uk/.

I am having a hard time of it this week. I have forgotten how to draw DDBs. Or have forgotten how to do foreshortening or something.
I'm trying to draw from photographs at the moment, instead of from life, which I haven't done in a while, and finding tricky.
I think this is a technically good drawing, it just doesn't look like the subject:
http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1314/893474103_4b0da5f63d_o.jpg
Maybe I just need to start from scratch and draw it over again. His face is somewhat rounder than I have drawn him, his jaw less square.
Drawing from photos is hard, because of the way I draw - I never draw objects, I draw the space around the object. A photograph is good, because I can move it around and turn it upside down to reduce the image to planes and lines (which DDBs tend to object to if you do it IRL) but it's somehow missing the spark which makes it a good likeness. Argh.
The set is here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/21171554@N00/sets/72157600959843838/
The drawings I did at soundcheck are better likenesses, even though they are techncially not as good a drawing. Argh argh argh.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 10:24 (eighteen years ago)

― Kate, non masonic, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 10:54 (eighteen years ago)
FOLLOW THE LIGHT, FLUFFY, FOLLOW THE LIGHT!!!
Though, actually, Kate, how do you get yr photographic models to settle down, act naturally - or at least, pose them the way you want them to pose? Or do you just hire proper models in the first place, while I have to rely on whatever DDBs will come my way?
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 10:57 (eighteen years ago)
kate, non masonic, all your pics on this thread are wicked-awesome - stunning stuff! do you do all the makeup/hair/costuming yourself?
beth: that photo was taken at lake tekapo in the south island of new zealand.
― Rubyredd, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 11:02 (eighteen years ago)
I hope the people in question don't mind, but these were my first ever attempts at digital art, done for the "MSPaint other ILXors" thread:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/lixnixn/strange.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/lixnixn/face.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v655/lixnixn/smiling.jpg
I can't draw at all, so I simply painted over photos. It was fun doing these anyway.
― Tuomas, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 11:14 (eighteen years ago)
x-post: Yes, I do. I'm still at struggle artist level, so I do everything myself and just hope it looks okay...if not, photoshop to the rescue.
xx-post: Kate - No I don't hire models, I can't afford to, but sometimes I can convince them to pay me, which kind of rocks.
― Kate, non masonic, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 11:58 (eighteen years ago)
Oh ummm...further to that Kate, I am pretty useless at giving direction to models, and the first shoot we do is nearly always a waste of time...but it gives the subject a chance to realise I'm pretty chilled out and not going to be barking orders at them. When that dawns on them, the photos start to get good.
― Kate, non masonic, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 12:01 (eighteen years ago)
But how do you convince them to pose in a convincing way? I guess what I'm asking is how to losen up models.
My DDBs just seemed so uncomfortable with the whole process of being photographed, and it showed in many of the photos. How do you get them to relax?
x-post I guess you just answed that. Thanks!
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 12:02 (eighteen years ago)
I guess, with a polaroid, I don't get the time to take loads of photos and get them to relax and have them realise I'm not gonna be all up in their face shouting at them (I've been in photo shoots like that myself, and argh, people wonder why I always look so scared and uncomfortable in the photos). Maybe I should invest in a digital camera if I'm going to do more of this. But I just like the way that polaroid looks! It gives it a nice, soft quality with the flash and the film. Which is good for drawing from.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 12:03 (eighteen years ago)
We I have to admit, during a days shooting I have been known to get up to the 1500 frame mark. Throw enough shit against the wall....
Go digital, do the softness in post :)

― Kate, non masonic, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 12:07 (eighteen years ago)

I actually have a supposedly good digital camera I inherited from my dad/brother. I'm just scared of it and trying to figure out how it works.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 12:09 (eighteen years ago)

― Tuomas, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 12:40 (eighteen years ago)
GYAAAH sounds more like a wanking voice. Definitely.
Ha ha, I shouldn't be talking about this. I AM A SERIOUS ARTIST. I'm never going to get any more DDBs to pose for me if they think it's just for wank fodder.
(That said, these particular DDBs, the last show, they did this thing during one of the really intense motorik bits where they all turned around to face the drummer, and it was just like a WALL OF ASS. FMM and I just looked at each other and utterly cracked up, and she was all "look, they're presenting!" like baboons on heat or something and then we had this fite about which one had the best ass.)
I mean, WTF AM I TALKING ABOUT, I am a serious artist. And FMM is a serious writer. We sat and talked about Holger Czukay's editing technique all night. Yes we did. We did not get drunk and talk about arse. We never her.
― Masonic Boom, Wednesday, 25 July 2007 12:57 (eighteen years ago)
Anyway, x-post yeah, I know what you mean about the stained glass thing, Beth. That lovely luminosity that the monitor gives it. It's not even quite as good with LCD srcreens, I prefer the way my drawings used ot look on old monitors. They always looked so drab and dark when I printed them out.

Now I got my scanner up and running again I'm starting to scan in some of my old doodles. I inverted this one last night to fit the black background of my web page, I've got hundreds of these little pen works from being bored at work.

― Ste, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 10:14 (eighteen years ago)
Whoa. That is rad. Are they coloured on paper or do you add that in Photoshop?
― caek, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)
just added the colour in photoshop, very clumsily i admit as i was scanning this one in a rush. The original is just black pen on paper (you can see the lines from the paper still)
― Ste, Wednesday, 5 December 2007 14:56 (eighteen years ago)
"what are those horizontal lines?" was my next question

just a snip from something i've been messing with recently, it's not the final strip (the last panel needs shortening and making bolder and that awful speech bubble needs work). but i am fairly pleased with it so far, and wanted to hang it here in the gallery.

― crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:38 (sixteen years ago)

― caek, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:40 (sixteen years ago)
yeah! i should know from my old job, and i could google it, but i'm typing this all out instead
― crazy farting throwback jersey (gbx), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:45 (sixteen years ago)
depends on the printer/transparency paper. some printers get too warm to send the plastic sheets through and might melt it to the drum. (i have done this)
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:53 (sixteen years ago)
and i believe it separates right in that order: Cyan • Magenta • Yellow • Black (K)
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:54 (sixteen years ago)
You work from the lightest ink to the darkest I recall, so: YMCK.
― Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:55 (sixteen years ago)
ya, i guess that makes sense.
― The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:56 (sixteen years ago)
yeah, key last/on top.
― caek, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 19:57 (sixteen years ago)
Although looking at a print book I have, it claims CMYK is the most common order. We need someone with more experience on the print side of things for clarity
― Chewshabadoo, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:03 (sixteen years ago)
joygoat, that is awesome!
― mascara and ties (Abbott), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:05 (sixteen years ago)
Thanks everyone.
Yeah, the black is on top and the yellow is on the bottom, don't remember where C and M are - I tested it on scrap pieces first and put them in different orders and went with the one that I thought looked better.
I know you could do this on transparencies too, I've seen four color images on acetate or mylar but don't remember what they get used for - I know very little about commercial printing. I wanted some distance between the layers so it looks more 3-D and floaty looking.
I started off pouring layers of resin, letting it dry, printing a layer, pouring more resin, etc. But it took ages for it to cure solidly enough to be printed on. I might do a simpler two-color version this way, so it's color floating in a solid block of plastic.

Damn, I want this threat to keep going, it's awesome. Well, I might as well put some kind of shit up to help it out...
I'm no artist, but I do doodle weird stuff in notebooks sometimes just for the heck of it, usually during classes. Recently I'm working on basic concept ideas for various critters in a series of novels.

whoa that's neat. Nice and bold. Reminds me i need more dark in my pencil stuff.
i tried oils once, but i was pretty young and didn't know how the hell to use them. just got a mess everywhere and put me off, went back to watercolours. But loving acrylics now, when i'm not pencilling.
Don't be feared of the messiness of oils, get stuck in with them.

― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:19 (eleven years ago)
Ah the course two years ago? Went ok but stalled afterwards, doing another portrait course now and getting into it more, hopefully will keep it up after the course finishes. Here's my piece from the last session:
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7473/15522143749_5005786d2c_b.jpg
And a couple of watercolour sketches of Venice, one on location and one from a photo after I got back. More illustrative, I didn't pluck up the courage to throw away the pen and just rely on tone & colour.

just an unfancy hard tip liner pen. need to get a dip pen for more exciting & energetic lines.
― ledge, Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:35 (eleven years ago)
I was hit with redundancy a couple of months ago, so I decided to use the opportunity to get serious with painting. Enjoying all the experimenting and finding my style but struggling with sources.
One thing I realised after rifling through my truck load of photographs for sources is, as you mentioned, how much better it is to paint from live. Also it made me understand the importance of taking a decent photo (looking at composition especially) if it's going to be used for painting. Literally had nothing to go on.
The painting above of the colourful buildings on the coast is the first one I've sold.
― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:45 (eleven years ago)
I only ever tried oil painting once, I was fairly young and just recall someone had given me some unwanted oil paints and tools. Had no idea and just got them out and started to paint. Yeah got messy very quickly. Scared me off.
― Drop soap, not bombs (Ste), Thursday, 6 November 2014 11:52 (eleven years ago)
Good on you for making a go of the painting, I foolishing and/or courageously chucked it all in last year (!) to try and become an illustrator, success and clients have not been beating a path to my door yet. I struggle to inspire and motivate myself tbh, have not done as much work off my own bat as I could have. But hey this is ilxor gallery not ilxor artists' therapy. If I may be forgiven the self promotion, I have a portfolio site at http://tom.ledger.name/

I've watched some fascinating interviews with Simon, where he talks about how when he paints it's almost subconscious, and that if he comes out of that trance then the lines he's drawing just lose their power.
Totally on board with that.

Hey Ledge, did you ever get that dip pen you mentioned? Been practising with one myself this week.
A little bit scratchy, probably a cheap nib, but really impressed with the type of natural line it produces. Also wanted to use better ink, not keen on those design pen inks (always say their waterproof but hmm not sure) and my fountain pen (with converter-cartridge) just struggled to get the ink flowing and always clogged up.
