This is the most disgusting poll ever. Denny's = NO

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:42 (eighteen years ago)

I have studiously avoided Denny's since college

Shakey Mo Collier, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

weirdos.

Granted, it is the most current disgusting poll ever, but I wonder if it would be possible to start a poll, an ever more disgusting poll, and that poll would be called MOST DISGUSTING POLL EVER.

Hmmm. . . .

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

I have studiously avoided Denny's since 1982, when my father was served oil & vinegar & gnat salad dressing with his salad.

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

denny's was a good place to 14 year olds who wanted to smoke and drink coffee to go, just fyi. though nowadays in this new horrible world you probably can't even smoke in a denny's anymore, as if it makes a difference to the dining experience.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 18 June 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

gnats are extra protein

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

the dennys in my hometown smells so bad

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

Dan's family is very conservative; they don't enjoy eating bugs on their breakfast cereal or their salads.

Sara R-C, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

I've avoided Denny's since 1995, when a drunk buffoon yakked into the "Grand Slam" that was meant for me but our crosseyed waitress mistakenly sent to his table.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

that doesn't seem to be denny's fault, per se

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 18 June 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

They also served me water in a glass that had previously contained orange juice but had never been washed, plus all of our silverware was caked with food residue.

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

free food and oj!!

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

DO NOT EAT AT DENNY'S IN COLORADO SPRINGS, OR IN FACT ANYWHERE

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

someone got shot at our local carrows so denny's won by default, despite smelling like an open sewer

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

yeah in my court of law, dan, you got FREE FOOD.

plus all of our silverware was caked with food residue.

Appetizers, duh!!!!

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:51 (eighteen years ago)

Quite possibly the only thing our dining experience was missing in terms of the "damn, that's nasty" stakes is our waitress pissing all over the table while seating us; given its condition, I think she did that beforehand.

Oh, they also served us raw sausage.

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Why do posts get eaten?

Ms Misery, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, they also served us raw sausage.

"raw" ha ha no. where i come from that's called Colorado Sushi!

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

also remember that urine is sterile. she was probably just wiping down the tables--maybe they were out of 409?

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

it's amazing that Denny's is still open for business because it sounds like they've tried to kill HI DERE on multiple occasions.

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

Denny's is the Abu Ghraib of chain restaurants.

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

IMHO Carrow's is way way way worse as far as quality of food goes. Not even sure if they are a nationwide chain but they're serious sketch.

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

schef v v otm, except sub "perkins" as regionally appropriate

ghost rider, Monday, 18 June 2007 16:57 (eighteen years ago)

The three or four Perkins I've visisted have been fairly decent, and the food's an improvement over Abu Ghraib's, but one of them had lime-green upholstery and the hostess' name was "Charlie" (a woman).

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 18 June 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

NO WAY!!!!!!! A WOMAN NAMED CHARLIE!!! OMG YOU MUST HAVE GONE TO THE PERKINS IN BIZZARO WORLD!!!!!!!

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 June 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

did the FOOD order YOU?!?

ghost rider, Monday, 18 June 2007 17:02 (eighteen years ago)

do they still make that cologne, charlie? the only thing i remember about it is this weird commercial they had in the early 90s or whatever that starred ray charles and cindy crawford singing a song about the cologne. omg cindy crawford was the worst singer that ever existed, too.

that is my post, about the name charlie.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 18 June 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

man perkins is the cat's ass, denny's is vile

A B C, Monday, 18 June 2007 17:05 (eighteen years ago)

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 18 June 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

if I'm not mistaken there's only one Denny's in SF and its in Japantown and serves, um, sushi (in addition to the usual Denny's fare)

Can you order hash browns and sausage links with it?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Monday, 18 June 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

guys the point of these places is to drink coffee and smoke cigarettes all night because you cannot get into bars, not to actually eat their terrible food!

okay apparently there are a couple other Denny's in town I don't know about but this is the only one I've ever been aware of....

Menu, cultures mix at Japantown Denny's - San Francisco
Nation's Restaurant News, June 27, 1988 by Alan Liddle

Menu, cultures mix at Japantown Denny's By Alan Liddle

SAN FRANCISCO -- Seeking visibility, the media clout of a national chain, and a concept to complement nearby businesses, a local family has opened the city's first Denny's in the Japantown strip center.

Owned by the Iwamasa family, which holds Denny's development rights for the entire city, the franchised coffee shop's American roots make it stand out in a neighborhood with close to 40 Japanese, Korean, and Chinese restaurants. The Japantown Denny's sports a one-of-a-kind decor and a menu complete with Asian and Portuguese offerings.

The Japantown Denny's sports a unique decor and a menu complete with Asian and Portuguese offerings.

The unusual characteristics of the Japantown Denny's suggest that the giant Southern California-based chain, anxious to capture ethnic neighborhood sales in the continental United States, might be trying the cross-cultural approach it fostered in such places as Japan, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.

Denny's corporate officials were unavailable for comment.

The Iwamasas' Denny's debuted in late April at the corner of Post and Buchanan streets.

The project took two years to complete after the franchise agreement was signed and saw the unique restaurant emerge from a remodeled movie theatre.

Along with standard Denny's fare, such as the Grand Slam Breakfast, the Iwamasas' menu features the likes of Hawaiian-made Portuguese-style sausage $2.25), skewered and grilled chicken and beef yakitori sticks ($3.50), and saimin ($3.25), a light broth with noodles, ham, and fish cake.

Steamed rice outsells french fries in the Japantown restaurant, managers said, and tsukemono, a pickled salad appetizer from Japan, and kimchee, Korea's spicy fermented cabbage side dish, are available on request.

Desserts from the neighborhood's popular Yasukochi's Sweet Stop, including a concoction of sponge cake, whipped cream, and coffee candy known as Coffee Crunch ($2.75), are also served.

Department from the chain's prototypical interior, the San Francisco Denny's has rose, gray, and oyster-shell-white decor and features a 30-seat mezzanine, elaborate flower arrangements, and walls covered with gallery art, including prints by Asian women. Wooden lantern shades cover the lamps.

"We felt we needed a restaurant that would not take away from some of the local businesses," explained Ron Iwamasa, whose family leases space to other area restaurateurs.

As one of many Denny's in the greater San Francisco Bay Area, the Iwamasas are counting on the chain's television and radio advertisements to get people into their restaurant.

Though they had spent little for advertising and promotions as of mid-June, the family plans to tie into Denny's summer specials campaign, which will start out focusing on chicken-fried steak, products.

"I've been told they (the chain) are going to spend about $650,000 (on media buys in the Bay Area), so it would be wise for us to coincide our (advertising effort) with that," Iwamasa said.

On the local front, he said the family would buy some radio time and run print ads in the city's thrice-weekly and ethnic newspapers.

The family, Iwamasa reported, is having some fun building word-of-mouth and interest in its Denny's: "We had a standard Grand Slam Breakfast flyer made up, but we added a pair of chopsticks to the plate. We want to arouse some curiosity."

Disappointed with initial sales at breakfast, usually a strong daypart for Denny's, Iwamasa indicated that the situation would be re-evaluated after promotional efforts are in full swing.

IHOP v. Denny's is like Coke v. Pepsi, but with a twist of bad hygeine.

I will 4ever love both, but my digestive system is probably stoked that I haven't subjected it to anything from these places in nearly a year. Driving 2 hours to the Middle East for a show w/ friends, then eating breakfast @ 2:30 AM just outside of Cambridge as the club kids roll in RIP ;_;

In the 1994 Christmas movie The Santa Clause, the characters played by Tim Allen and Eric Lloyd eat at a Denny's restaurant on Christmas Eve after Allen's character singes their home-cooked turkey dinner. He describes the chain as an "American institution", a line which was immediately followed by an interior shot of the restaurant focusing on Japanese diners.

Curt1s Stephens, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

yeah there's a Denny's mentioned a lot in the new Murakami novel.

Mr. Que, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

WTF, he singes the turkey ergo the whole thing gets thrown out? They deserve to eat at Denny's.

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

why is it always hash brown OR grits?

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

sunny successor, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

That's because in Denny's, those cockroaches are in the salad dressing. Along with the gnats.

(Seriously, my father thought the vinegar in the oil and vinegar set had pepper in it until we pointed out that, unless Colorado was special, pepper doesn't have wings.)

HI DERE, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

Can we all agree that Denny's and Arby's lose?

Waffle House is brilliant. I had some overly strong cold-ish coffee in a Denny's once on International Drive in Orlando. It was like a slow horrible journey into hell, but the hash browns were good. Though not as good as Waffle House hash browns, which were awesome. We totally need Waffle House over here.

Jordan, Monday, 18 June 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

the best part of waffle house is the syrup plate. and that secret cooking aid image posted on flickr. they have this very ornate way of telling the cooks what to make by placing silverware and jelly into certain configurations on the plates.
