Which brands are you currently loyal to? How fickle are you? Are all brands by definition corporate scum? (I R not street team kthx)

Mark C, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:53 (eighteen years ago)

my Adidas and me, close as can be

sunny successor, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:58 (eighteen years ago)

Vans.

Stubb's BBQ Sauce.

Diet Dr. Pepper.

Heinz ketchup.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

Are duracell batteries still 6 times better than their competition?

Mark C, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)

that was a lie

sunny successor, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

You're lying about adidas?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)

Innocent Drinks

Forest Pines Mk2, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)

None that I can think of. I stopped caring. I do buy some brands, but overall I'm not too fussy about'em. I did buy a Sportsac. Just cause I wanted one. Silly really. But it's a MEGA cool one (manga drawing on it)

nathalie, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

no duracell lied. the adidas statement/lyric ripoff stands.

sunny successor, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)

Adidas, San Pellegrino, Berocca, Heinz Ketchup, Alpro Soy Milk, Moleskine.

Ronan, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:08 (eighteen years ago)

Taylors of Harrogate, Heinz Ketchup yes big time. Helen Browning Organical Sossidge! Er, *desperately tries to think of something non-food related*

I'm returning to Converse brand loyalty. I tried going elsewhere and it's just not right. (I had a pair of Addidas that kept SQUEAKING once and the brand loyalty fell somewhat).

Er Dr Who is a brand amirite?

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

HUGGIES. Before I had a baby I would have MOCKED the idea that there were differences between nappies but Pampers just do not stay on (or maybe Lytton has a particularly Huggies-shaped arse).

Diet Coke, I'm loyal though I don't particularly like the fact. (i.e. behavioural loyalty but not emotional loyalty)

Groke, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

TABASCO

I DIED, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Then again: Alpro Soy Milk (flavoured ones) are GREBT.
Clover bamboo needles
Schweppes Tonic

Re nappies: bestest ones are the cheapo ones we get at Kruidvat. Pampers are *shit*.

nathalie, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

weren't duracell the first widely available akaline batteries and would beat the others (zinc carbon) hands down. but other manufacturers soon caught on. i remember the duracell bunny test, one that lost it's value when they started using cgi bunnies.

converse trainers. that's about it. robinson's R? (actually, no, i'll drink sainsburys own brand as well, but prefer Robinsons). nad electronics for hifi stuff (not that i've bought anything for about 4 years but my next cd player will match amp, turntable and preamp). can't think of anything else i buy regularly where i care, everything's increasingly generic.

koogs, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:15 (eighteen years ago)

Nike SB, MD 20/20, Irn Bru.

jim, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:16 (eighteen years ago)

Heinz ketchup, Jif peanut butter, Crest toothpaste, Stouffers frozen dinner.

brownie, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Oh two more - Tunnocks Caramel Wafers, McVities Jaffa Cakes! Plymouth Gin. HA HA, Microsoft in a real actual sense...

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:17 (eighteen years ago)

Hellmans.

Mark C, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)

Clover bamboo needles

Also, Gutermann thread and Miller Lite (shut-up)

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:19 (eighteen years ago)

jack jones t shirts, jeans.

darraghmac, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)

Apple and Adobe

Heinz ketchup, Hellmann's mayo, Northern toilet paper

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:27 (eighteen years ago)

Stubb's BBQ sauce is great. I first bought it because it was the sauce with the least sugar out of any of the ones on the shelf - turns out this also meant it tasted and cooked better.

Hurting 2, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

De-Solv-It household cleaner -- that shit's amazing.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Michael Philip Philip Philip philip Annoyman, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:30 (eighteen years ago)

Let me tell you about Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser.

Ai Lien, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

San Pellegrino and Vans seconded or whatever. And YSL or Dior make-up. Arbonne products.

Ai Lien, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:34 (eighteen years ago)

Oooh, yes, the magic eraser really is magic!
Heinz ketchup
hellmans mayo

saudade, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

That Magic Eraser is the bomb.

Also, what the hell is disarrono?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

i love that there are billions of mayonnaise lovers here. a toast!

Ai Lien, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:37 (eighteen years ago)

Results 1 - 10 of about 114,000 for disaronno. (0.08 seconds)

http://www.monnik-dranken.nl/downloads/flessen/disaronno.jpg

Dom Passantino, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

You all disgust me.

"disaronno on the rocks". Ugh. I can't decide which awful 'spirit' advert bugs me the most, but I think disaronno may have been overtaken by "so co?" "southern comfort". "so co on the rocks"? "so co all roun argghhhhhhhh!!!" (the latter part of the sentence is after I have covered them all in aforementioned "so co" and set them all on fire, the huge giant fucking cockfarmers).

Haha PRIMARK. I often think in town "oh i need a bag" or something but think "wait PRIMARK is the one for me".

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:41 (eighteen years ago)

Delouis et Fils Mayonnaise

Ed, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

Would you just stop it with the mayonnaise!!! I feel queasy!!!

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:42 (eighteen years ago)

I mean why would you feel loyal to WHITE GOO?

On saying that I have realised I am loyal to PRITT STICK and Tippex!!

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

There are brand products I buy regularly but I can't think of any where if it wasn't available I wouldn't just buy a rival version without hesitation.

Fentimans soft drinks spring to mind tho - I want them to be more successful/available but they need to do can versions (they do this for their shandy but not the others yet) and be cheaper.

blueski, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:43 (eighteen years ago)

why do people eat mayonnaise?

696, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

this is not mayo

this is mayonnaise, it is so good one can eat it with a spoon (I wonder if one could put it in an ice-cream maker)

Ed, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:44 (eighteen years ago)

I know disarrono is a liquor I want to know what kind. The lady "seductively" sucking on ice cubs tells me nothing.

Also jumping to google with every single pondering would make ILx a far less fun place.

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

no other pickapeppa sauce is quite as good as Pickapeppa Sauce

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

I think mayonnaise is something for peons who want to moisten their food and think they are too good for noble honest GRAVY.

I am going to see if there are any jobs going at Bisto.

Oh yes! BISTO!

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Stolichnaya.

will, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

Tinned tuna is ALSO horrible (but it would be made much nicer with the addition of gravy - I can just tell).

I have a loyalty to tesco mackerel in a tin but I suppose I have to as they are the only people that ever have skinless and boneless mackerel! Sainsburys DID but then they stopped for some reason and hence I shun them.

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

What about loyalty to, like, record labels. Does that count as brand loyalty?

I was going to add Victo, Incus, Tzadik, Okkadisk and Wobbly Rail to my list, but "liking everything I've heard on that label" isn't quite the same thing as "buying everything that they put out just based on the label name." But those are close to brand-loyal names for me.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

Also, RIP Barking Pumpkin Records -- total brand loyalty.

Rock Hardy, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

I think you are having turned into 1x PONCE, Tracey Hand!

Sarah, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really have any brand loyalties. There are products I like, but I've never automatically assumed that a new product by a known brand is going to be any better than any other product.

That said, I will not accept any substitute for Scotch tape.

accentmonkey, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:06 (eighteen years ago)

Mark C, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:08 (eighteen years ago)

I have in my time been brand-loyal to Creation, Wiiija, Too Pure, Lazy and Duophonic, though thankfully the Creation part of that didn't last very long at all.

Mark C, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:09 (eighteen years ago)

Doesn't brand loyalty imply an exclusion to all other brands? So if you're loyal to a record label would you not buy records from any other labels out of loyalty?

Ms Misery, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:11 (eighteen years ago)

hip flask is for brandy, I have a pouch for mayonnaise

Ed, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:13 (eighteen years ago)

What is USA kind of Black Label beer? Not Carling?

Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

It's Carling, but it's decidedly not the same, and brewed in Milwaukee.

I just didn't want anyone to think that I'd turned fancy all of a sudden.

John Justen, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

So says the guy with Fluevog and Hendrick's on his list.

John Justen, Wednesday, 20 June 2007 16:03 (eighteen years ago)

Apple, Budweiser (seriously-especially in summer), Cadillac.

And thumb's up on the Hendricks.

http://www.nerve.com/poetry/rachel/swiffer/comps/bigicon.jpg

because it knows that nothing can ever be clean enough, wiped down
enough, put enough in its place, buffed and dustless
for this, I love it, this slender sleekness masquerading
as a cleaning tool, what is not to love
about something with such purpose, slim
and hard, the heft of it, the glide
of its downy underside, the cloth
tucked neatly about the rubbery base, the tip
ready to burst, to squirt forth
quick ejaculations of cleanliness

not merely utilitarian and no mere
knick-knack, this thing understands
that part of me that would antisept the world, order
and organize, straighten compulsively, clear
clean, color-code and stack
everything into piles ready to be touched,
gone over, and made like new

there is a power in this, this swiffing
this nearly effortless polishing, this thing
always ready, waiting
to be taken out, sheathed
and danced across my smooth, hard-
wood floors, shooting at my command, a gentle squeeze
from my fingers, a clean sweep
everything left aglow
and just slightly wet

SONY ERICSSON!

this is the only really deeply-felt brand loyalty i've got, i think

-- Tracer Hand

yeah, this'll have to do for me too.

I HATE HELLMANS. hellmans make terrible, terrible mayo. any cheapo supermarket own-brand rival is superior.

r|t|c, Monday, 25 June 2007 20:22 (eighteen years ago)

that is seriously untrue--there is v little more disgusting than cheapo mayonnaise

RJG, Monday, 25 June 2007 20:27 (eighteen years ago)

i 8080 swiffer dusters and creepy mrclean magik erasers (dudes they clean stained coffee cups and stainless steel sinks and other stained things like nothing else. i bet they'd clean the tartar off teeth. i am not going to try this tho. mainly b/c i go to the dentist and don't have tartar right now. but maybe one day maybe.)

i am also pretty loyal to President's Choice storebrand things

xpost
i grew up on hellman's - maybe it's different in different countries? i always found it way better than any other brand. but then what did i know really. i haven't bought mayonnaise in years and years. because blaaargh, mayonnaise.

rrrobyn, Monday, 25 June 2007 20:29 (eighteen years ago)

it's even worse than everything Ed has posted about mayonnaise combined

crosspost

Ms Misery, Monday, 25 June 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

So people here have the most brand loyalty to MAYO and VARIOUS BEVERAGES?

xpost haha, question answered!

The Macallan 18 Year, Monday, 25 June 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

cheapo mayonnaise is v lots more disgusting than mayonnaise

RJG, Monday, 25 June 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Once my mom snuck a cheaper brand of mayo into a Hellmann's jar and my father, my brother and I all said "wtf, is spoiled, get ur money back!"

Rock Hardy, Monday, 25 June 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

fine, let's break this down

1/ CONSISTENCY. hellmans is way too thick and gelatinous - you can almost slice it. this is not necess bad in itself (though unsuitable for everyday eating) cf certain aolis and soi-disant "french" mayos i have enjoyed, but i've also known hellmans to have a strangely curdled appearance on occasion, like old cottage cheese. this is morally incorrect.

2/ TASTE. hellmans has no taste as such. the sensation of eating h-mans is one of noticing the (curdled) extra matter it adds to its meal, and feeling the silent calories slathering around your heart. yet it's not satisfyingly heavy either - it's just fatty air, which somehow retains a sort of cruel brightness in your mouth so you don't ever forget it.

3/ there is no 3. unless you really want one.

In general I am not brand loyal. In order to earn my loyalty a brand needs to deliver a functional, well-made, well-designed product for a reasonable price. My loyalty then extends to the product itself, not to the brand.

For example, I buy Levi's 501 original shrink-to-fit jeans. I've bought them for almost forty years. I am very loyal to them. However, the Levi's brand appears on at least a dozen other kinds of jeans, on slacks, on shirts, on belts, even on billfolds and other merchandise. None of these interest me, despite the Levi's brand.

two years pass...

for a reward of £50, i have agreed to do this:

We really appreciate your participation in this Virgin Media research project and hope you enjoy taking part.
There are two tasks we would like you to complete;

1. Firstly please go through to the questionnaire section on The Thinking Shed and complete it as fully as you can.

2. We would also like you to produce a collage entitled my favourite loyalty programme (e.g. Tesco clubcard, BA air miles, Subway). In producing this we would like you to explore in greater detail the way in which a loyalty programme can make you feel towards a brand, and the way it impacts your purchasing behaviour. We want you to think about the rewards you get, how you get them and what that then changes in the way you go about spending your money e.g.how likely you are to carry on buying products and services from that company in the future.

Please be as creative as you can with this collage, we encourage you to use leaflets you pick up, pictures from the internet / magazines, words and any other objects you may wish to use. A cut out old cereal box is often a good starting point as a base for the collage.

On the back of the collage we would like you to put your name and some comments as to what the images and items on your collage mean. This is extremely important as without these we cannot interpret the meaning behind your masterpieces!

Please remember to bring these collages with you to the group.

For the person who produces the best collage there will be an additional incentive of a £30 Amazon / iTunes / Argos voucher (depending on the winners’ preference).
