so good.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

love it!

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:06 (seventeen years ago)

how many episodes have there been so far?

gr8080, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:08 (seventeen years ago)

3

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

Anyone see the movie the one guy is in? Eagle vs. Shark or whatever? (I admit I'd written it off mentally as this year's cutesy indie movie.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

The show bit is great -- the strange thing is that some of the songs seem to work way LESS well than they do in their stage act. The "West End Girls" bit was terrific, but then the "Think, Think about It" song somehow missed, underplayed, or just skipped most of the punchlines from the way they perform it.

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

what was the second song last night? it was amazing.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

(10,000 bonus points, though, for how well Jemaine's jacket matched the song.)

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

I was thinking that they would make a decent real band, actually.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:12 (seventeen years ago)

Chaki, that was the "Think, Think about It" one -- compare versus

http://youtube.com/watch?v=u5tmnBeNv18

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:13 (seventeen years ago)

no youtube at work :(

dean, if you have hbo on demand there is a concert from 2 years ago. its great. they are v v good guitar players.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I saw that. It's funny because when I initially saw the ads for the new show, I thought it was weird that they were advertising a comedy special. Then, last week tooling on-demand I discovered the series! I think the show is brilliant and different and I find it surprising that they were able to turn the stage show into such a perfect little sitcom concept. Muggers was best one so far!

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:17 (seventeen years ago)

Being New Zealanders makes it easier to do all the soul/rap homages (that second song taking from Marvin Gate) without any icky racial stuff.

Watching last night's episode, with the classic New York guys, I realized how much this show can work internationally as a foreigner's idea of what it'd be like to live in NYC.

Eazy, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

Marvin Gate? That's in East London, right?

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:21 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know if i can watch this show after seeing that eagle vs shark movie, which is the worst shit i have ever seen in my entire life.

s1ocki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

LOVED the PSB homage.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

that plus cutesy comedy collage marketing is really doing its best to turn me away from this show. which i'll probably like when i actually get around to checking it out.

s1ocki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:24 (seventeen years ago)

i thought jermaine's rapping was amazing

cutty, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

s1ocks, that the demographic though--who else would they market to?

cutty, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:25 (seventeen years ago)

oh i misread collage for COLLEGE

cutty, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:26 (seventeen years ago)

I asked the wife last night, because I really can't tell, "if these guys were for real, would they be cute or retarded?" Now, that I think about it, she did not answer.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

jermaine has an awesome voice

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:28 (seventeen years ago)

The Pet Shop Boys bit was what made me love this show.

admrl, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

dude the first episode had a godley and creme bit.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:34 (seventeen years ago)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RC0DdrHbGg

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

this show it is funny to me

(can't find ep 3 t0rrent yet tho? :/ )

rrrobyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

My boss made me watch like 900 clips of this show today and I really wasn't impressed. Better if watched as a whole episode?

jessie monster, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:35 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i think so - it's not really meant for clips even though so many clips are pulled from it?

rrrobyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

e.g. the whole sign board job thing is funny as it stretches over the course of one show

rrrobyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

they were just songs. I didn't think the songs were funny.

jessie monster, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

we have already established that apparently I have serious funny bone issues, though.

jessie monster, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

uh.. yah.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

the songs need the show

rrrobyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:39 (seventeen years ago)

e.g. the whole sign board job thing is funny as it stretches over the course of one show

I got a career now.

I also love the ridiculous back-and-forth about the band's gigs. They're always having hypothetical arguments about the gigs, but they don't have any gigs.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:40 (seventeen years ago)

murry is so great. also props for having eugene mirmen as a regular character.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

and the fan is a uniquely odd thing. not to mention her husband, which is odder.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

It's quite funny.

Michael White, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

eugene mirmen?! I love that guy and didn't even notice him. Is he the landlord?

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:41 (seventeen years ago)

yah

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

hopefully he'll get more parts later on... hopefully the show lasts more than a dozen episodes!

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:43 (seventeen years ago)

Clips here.

The fan is very credible!

Eazy, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, I was actually thinking about how ILX would respond to this show and who would bring up "icky racial stuff" along those lines. The thing is, though, when they sing r&b it doesn't seem to be at all about black r&b -- if those songs belonged to anyone today, it seems like it'd be like John Mayer or James Blunt or something. Always feels like they're just going for "sensitive" pop music, and it's a whole other issue that super-popular music just happens to consist of white people already working in a black idiom.

That said, I do find them significantly less funny when they do rap or dancehall, though I think that's just a structural thing.

My favorite joke in all of these so far, apart from the ending shot joke of the mugging one, is the bit in the "I'm Not Crying" song where he's making a lasagna ... for one.

(Also Mel = fantastic)

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:45 (seventeen years ago)

It's going to get cancelled, isn't it? You can just tell. =(

It reminds me of Peep Show, actually.

admrl, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

I read somewhere that it was conceived as a 12-part thing?

jessie monster, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

xpost hooray

It seems like the kind of thing where they should just do like 10 great episodes and then close up, BBC style -- it's kind of a slight, charming thing, just not built for going on and on.

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:48 (seventeen years ago)

David Bowie Song:

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:52 (seventeen years ago)

xpost I'm your typical American that wants as much as he can enjoy, the more episodes the better. If I get bored of it, no problem. At least I'm not left wanting more. I hate that.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:54 (seventeen years ago)

yeah 12 eps sounds good for this show! like a book of short stories

rrrobyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:56 (seventeen years ago)

i have dealt with dismay re: battlestar ending with next season so now i feel i can deal with all tv shows having an end is what i'm probably really saying

rrrobyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

zen tv

rrrobyn, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:57 (seventeen years ago)

vs. Ween?

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

tenacious twee

da croupier, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

The thing is, though, when they sing r&b it doesn't seem to be at all about black r&b -- if those songs belonged to anyone today, it seems like it'd be like John Mayer or James Blunt or something. Always feels like they're just going for "sensitive" pop music, and it's a whole other issue that super-popular music just happens to consist of white people already working in a black idiom.

Definitely, this makes sense. And I like that we don't hear them actually performing, so they could very well be a lousy live band who have these fantasies of what their songs would sound like given some solid-gold production.

xpost - they are like Ween, except they're trying to get action. And, again, since they're not Americans, they don't fall into all the class/race stuff that American singer-actors would fall into when doing parody songs.

Eazy, Monday, 2 July 2007 22:59 (seventeen years ago)

I'm your typical American that wants as much as he can enjoy, the more episodes the better.

Are you one of these that thinks "soccer" should have more goals????

admrl, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

they have an EP coming out on Sub Pop in August. am completely obsessed.

fruitastic, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:03 (seventeen years ago)

"She's So Hot Boom" doesn't belong to John Mayer or James Blunt.

da croupier, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:04 (seventeen years ago)

If it wasn't for "Inner City Pressure" I'd say these guys were worthless.

da croupier, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:05 (seventeen years ago)

That's why I said I like them less when they do rap or dancehall! Which is mostly just a matter of that kind of joke being, like, done -- not because of "icky racial stuff," but because those are the moments where they seem like they could just be two guys you know goofing around at your party.

(What's wrong with the world today / mmph a hmm mph a hmm mph a may)

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

I think my new excuse for everything = "hey, man, I just want some muesli"

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:10 (seventeen years ago)

that song jermaine wrote on the bass with the cassette tape was super funky kick ass.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:13 (seventeen years ago)

woops, sorry, nabisco. missed the "dancehall" part when Eazy quoted you. Anyhow, I'll let people drop a youtube link when they do a novel homage and otherwise avoid ACOUSTIC FOLK COMEDY.

da croupier, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:14 (seventeen years ago)

I thought the marketing made this look terrible, but I caught about 2/3 of the sign board episode (including the "She's So Hot Boom" song) and it was pretty good.

bernard snowy, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

They're kind of taking the "Dick in a Box" idea -- catchy songs, not just funny as parody but well written and believably but ridiculously emo -- more than the Midnite Vultures idea.

Eazy, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:16 (seventeen years ago)

icky racial stuff? What are you guys talking about? FFS, you don't have to be getting anywhere near racial to use a low voice and joke about funk.

Are you one of these that thinks "soccer" should have more goals????

No, the one goal is fine by me.

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

ilx, sometimes i just don't understand u

A B C, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:17 (seventeen years ago)

xpost to self (although it is entirely possible that the song would not have been nearly as funny if I had known to expect random musical breaks from reality)

bernard snowy, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

fuck off, alphabet bitch.

'murmur' from the sopranos was in last nights episode.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

"Icky racial stuff" in the sense of making fun of R. Kelly by trying to write your own sex jams that are ludicrously "primitive" in style and content (which is not what these guys are doing).

Eazy, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:19 (seventeen years ago)

"Well, boss, it's sort of like Tenacious D meets Withnail & I..."

da croupier, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

Finally the act that will inspire Starbucks to buy Sub Pop.

da croupier, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

i think you might be taking this a bit too seriously.

brett is in a popular ska/reggae/funk band in NZ btw. also he was a hobbit in those movies.

chaki, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:23 (seventeen years ago)

Though the more Tenacious D embellished their folk comedy act, the further they got from their one joke. Embellishments give the Conchords a chance to think one up.

da croupier, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

Can I create a board called "Do You Like Anything????"

dean ge, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:24 (seventeen years ago)

An elf, actually! He has the nostrils for it.

nabisco, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:25 (seventeen years ago)

More than you needed to know.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 2 July 2007 23:53 (seventeen years ago)

inner
inner city
inner city pressure

Anyone heard the bbc radio show? Available on amazon uk. Non-produced versions of the songs along with radio comedy(which works less well).

Hope they put out a proper sdtk.

calstars, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 01:11 (seventeen years ago)

Ever since I heard their song for the ladies, I have wanted a t-shirt that says "redheads not warheads".

accentmonkey, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 12:29 (seventeen years ago)

ok i watched it and i roffld. just when its getting too cute then its funny which makes it all better. the scene where he meets the sign holding girl and he's all shes so hot omg - the part right before the song started cracked me up. the song was funny too.

jhøshea, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 12:37 (seventeen years ago)

This show makes my week.

I loved when they were getting mugged, Bret was wearing the safety vest Murray gave them, and Jermaine was the one who got the worst of it.

molly mummenschanz, Friday, 6 July 2007 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

Important question: is it non-weird in NZ that his name is Jemaine, with the R omitted?

nabisco, Friday, 6 July 2007 22:31 (seventeen years ago)

i've gotta try to torrent this, it sounds like. will report back.

jergïns, Friday, 6 July 2007 22:38 (seventeen years ago)

saw the pilot and was all eh, but I've warmed to it considerably. John from Cinci, too

will, Friday, 6 July 2007 22:50 (seventeen years ago)

xpost to nabisco: i live in nz and jemaine with or without the r is a pretty weird name.

NAME DROP... brett is my friend's landlord!

Rubyred, Saturday, 7 July 2007 01:16 (seventeen years ago)

Is he nice?

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 July 2007 01:49 (seventeen years ago)

i don't know; i stayed at their place for 3 months and never saw him. but apparently he's a pretty laid-back dude. the house has a big section (by wellington standards) and they all wanted to jazz it up and have a vege garden and stuff, so he gave them a pile of cash to do whatever they wanted to the place.

Rubyred, Saturday, 7 July 2007 02:19 (seventeen years ago)

I love them. The pet shop boys thing was amazing. Also, I'm a little bit in love with Bret.

ENBB, Saturday, 7 July 2007 02:57 (seventeen years ago)

i kind of like that i'm not in love with either of them but like them both a lot

the running around with the safety vest on + murray's tips for new zelanders in new york (stay away from dangerous crowds; stick to back alleys) = hilarious

i watched the texas (southxsouthwest fest) documentary that's up on youtube - it's pretty funny too, in a great deadpan-meets-genuine-shock-and-awe way - in general though, i'm more into their just being dudes and the adventures they have than i am into the songs. maybe this is wrong of me?

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

HOW TERRIBLE OF YOU

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 July 2007 03:12 (seventeen years ago)

brett: "i'm looking for my friend"
cop: "dark hair, glasses, talks like a robot?"
brett: "yeah that's just how new zelanders talk"

haha
(paraphrased tho sorry)

xpost sometimes i am terrible haha

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

ned do you like this show?

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 03:22 (seventeen years ago)

brett: "yeah that's just how new zelanders talk"

that would be correct.

Rubyred, Saturday, 7 July 2007 03:37 (seventeen years ago)

ned do you like this show?

Only seen some of the clips. I agree with others that "Inner City Pressure" is the high point.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 7 July 2007 03:40 (seventeen years ago)

but the strength of this show is in the, uh, show
like not the clips but watching the whole thing. a bunch of smaller jokes within one big joke. that is within another, bigger joke.
i probably said that upthread though and am repeating myself.

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:00 (seventeen years ago)

sorry i spelled new zealand wrong twice there... um
uh

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:10 (seventeen years ago)

on behalf of all new zealanders: we forgive you ;)

Rubyred, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:31 (seventeen years ago)

i'll never do it again!

murray: "he may be dead"
dude with paintball gun - dave?: "he maybe did what?"
m: "he may be DEAD"
dave: "i know but what did he maybe do?"
m: "he may be DEAD"
dave: "maybe he did or maybe he didn't, what did he maybe do?"
brett: "no, he may be dead"
dave: "are you guys fucking with me?"

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:49 (seventeen years ago)

full eps are on y0utube btw of course
which is why that above is like a transcript and my previous entry re: new zealand accent is a fairly inaccurate paraphrasing...

also: rhymenoceros

rrrobyn, Saturday, 7 July 2007 04:57 (seventeen years ago)

"Inner City Pressure" is my new theme song.

kenan, Saturday, 7 July 2007 07:38 (seventeen years ago)

You want to sit down
But you sold your chair
So you just...
You just stand there.

kenan, Saturday, 7 July 2007 07:41 (seventeen years ago)

No one cares
No one sympathizes
You just stay home
And Play synthesizers

kenan, Saturday, 7 July 2007 07:59 (seventeen years ago)

Also:

She's so hot she's making me sexist. Bitch.

kenan, Saturday, 7 July 2007 08:10 (seventeen years ago)

Also: I smell a lot of Ween-level comedy begging to happen in this show, but thankfully so far it hasn't gotten that inexcusable. So far it's just a little South-Park-y. And fine and whatever and -- deep breath -- ok.

kenan, Saturday, 7 July 2007 09:45 (seventeen years ago)

my fave verses on the what's wrong with the world R&B song are the one about Monkeys giving people diseases and the one about high sneaker prices. Those cracked me up.

dan selzer, Saturday, 7 July 2007 14:52 (seventeen years ago)

this show is brilliant. me and lxy watched all three last night. Inner City Pressure was tear-inducing. the phrasing was so perfect pet shop boys. I concur with rrrobyn above that you really need to watch the whole show: the genius is in the silences and looks and awkward moments. their manager kind of kills me, like a cross between Ian Fiath and David Brent.

Jemaine is really weird looking. In a good way.

jergïns, Sunday, 8 July 2007 17:38 (seventeen years ago)

also i love the week-in-the-life format. "What, all that happened on Tuesday??"

and thankx guys for the Daft Punk reference

jergïns, Sunday, 8 July 2007 17:43 (seventeen years ago)

it's pretty good except for the songs

am0n, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:27 (seventeen years ago)

The manager is my favorite for laffs; I love both the main guys & they are v.v. good looking. I am surprised no Tenacious D comparisons have been made (ie on their NPR interview): HBO show about unpopular two-man band. But xxx100k better of course.

Abbott, Sunday, 8 July 2007 20:57 (seventeen years ago)

HBO's streaming the entire episode this week.

I'm so glad the shows are on YT, I'd never have seen it otherwise. I love this show and I keep replaying the live version of "She's So Hot BOOM!" which is awesomeness.

I've had that part in whatever that one song about tape of love where Jemaine goes PEOPLE PEOPLE PAPER PAPER PAPER PAPER PEOPLE PEOPLE etc stuck in my head all day.

I only just realized halfway through ep 7 that his name is Jemaine and not actually Jermaine as all the Americans pronounce it.

chaki, Wednesday, 1 August 2007 22:55 (seventeen years ago)

I liked Mel better when she was hot for both of 'em, at some point she lost interest in Jemaine entirely.

kenan, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 16:09 (seventeen years ago)

I have never seen the HBO show but I spent a lot of this morning watching FotC concert clips on YouTube. My favorite one is the one about "issues." Then at lunch today I went to this record store near my work, and as I was leaving a dad and his teenage son were walking in, and the son was singing "There are people on the street having sex with monkeys." It was weird.

n/a, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:01 (seventeen years ago)

It's a phenomenon all of a sudden. It's a funny, funny show. You can see whole episodes on youtube.

kenan, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

The performances in that HBO special they did are so much funnier than in the show! I probably said this upthread: on the show they kinda step on the punchlines. Still great, but ... yeah.

Bret's player was amazingly well-cast.

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:08 (seventeen years ago)

on the show they kinda step on the punchlines.

Sometimes, sometimes not. "She's So Hot (Boom)" is much funnier on the show. "Business Time" is much better live. I did not need to see Jemaine naked, thanks.

kenan, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:11 (seventeen years ago)

the hbo special is funny in a slightly different way - a bit more true to life i guess - the show is more about the 'bret' and 'jemaine' (and mel and murray) weirdo oblivious-to-(some of)-the-ways-of-the-world personas. i like both kinds of performances. i'm still a bit surprised the show even exists.

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

And the visual references on the show are great! The french pop video, for a great example. Or the Chungking Express street shots in "Inner City Pressure".

kenan, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:13 (seventeen years ago)

nabisco, you are wrong, guy.

chaki, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

I'm surprised anyone disagrees! Stuff like "Issues" and "Business Time" seemed much funnier when they had time and space to let the jokes breathe a little. Some of them disappear entirely, like fork-knees saying "Aaa-aaaa-aargh."

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

But there are no great moments in performance specials where Bret fends off date rape, so...

nabisco, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:33 (seventeen years ago)

i have no idea how you think the songs dont breathe in the sitcom setting. the songs are slowed down dramatically in the show just for that reason.

chaki, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

Apparently I am receiving a different broadcast :(

NJUWWPT episode was hilarious but disappointing. When they went to black n white in the car I was certain they were going to do a we're-on-tour themed song, but then nothing. I did like the line about the mermaids smoking seaweed at their parties though.

The best thing about this show though really is Bret's sweaters.

This last episode was probably the funniest Will Forte will ever be.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha true

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

So is it just me, or does the show seem to have decided over the past few episodes that the group really sucks, and they only make good music in their song-fantasies? At the beginning you could imagine they were weird but competent, since things like the "The Humans Are Dead" video were presumably their actual recorded music, and the Jemaine-and-boombox trade show performance was pretty funky. But the past few episodes keep having them twiddle shabbily on their guitars and look stupid, as if to suggest they couldn't even begin to play anything like in their fantasies.

(It's a good thing they weren't actually getting a record deal, cause Bret would get screwed on publishing: Jemaine wrote their big "Who Likes to Rock the Party?" single when he was out of the band! Though he maybe helped with the booties / boobies part.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

I love Murray so much. I want to hug him.

Me too!

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

nabisco, I thought the same thing myself (about them sucking when they actually do play). I think this past episode, they played something other than "Who Likes To Rock the Party", but it was equally as terrible. Will Forte seemed to sum it up with his, "Your stage characters of being 2 clueless and naive guys from New Zealand is hilarious!" (I'm paraphrasing).

That being said, 3 cheers for the Donovan-esque "Pretty Prince of Parties."

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:48 (seventeen years ago)

yah i noticed that 2

jhøshea, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:49 (seventeen years ago)

WE R THRO TEH LOOKING GLASS PEOPLE !!!

jhøshea, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:54 (seventeen years ago)

In any case, it seems to deep-six my suspicion that they were going to go the Extras route with this, and have the second season be a whole turn-around where they're actually successful.

nabisco, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:56 (seventeen years ago)

I love Murray so much. I want to hug him.

funny, you want to hug him, but you want to punch him almost as much. That's the character. The hug/punch axis.

ENBB, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

chaki is totally right. that was a fantastic episode.

molly mummenschanz, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

I've never wanted to punch Murray. Ever. Granted, I don't want him to be my band manager either.

I had completely forgotten them making the video for the robot song; I was working under the theory that the TV version of Flute of the Commodores the guys only had the one "rock the party" song.

Mel/Kristen Schaal is kind of really hot in the Arwen dress.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:05 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway...love this show. Watched all the episodes on demand about a week ago. It is basically "Tenacious Twee" but that works fine for me as i loved the original Tenacious D HBO show. I think FOTC have better songs, though.

Jermaine's my favorite of the two. He resembles my friend Justin (even sounds like him!), except skinny and from New Zealand.

I don't know why anybody would prefer the stage show to the TV program: I saw some of those on YouTube and it looks like THEY ARE LAUGHING AT THEIR OWN JOKES. Well smirking at least. A little too They Might Be Giants for me. Plus the acoustic guitars interfere with their dance moves.

James Redd and the Blecchs, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 18:18 (seventeen years ago)

what episode did you see, laurel?

kenan, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

(just curious, btw, i'm not going to try to convert you or anything)

kenan, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 18:20 (seventeen years ago)

laurel, the first ep i watched i felt the same way but it only took another to hook me in.

sunny successor, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

Oh wow I just saw Ep 1 of this and it's my new favourite programme.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

The one where a woman who works in a coffee shop tells one of the boys that she's shipping out to Iraq as a sniper in order to get him to sleep with her. And it comes out that their band manager has paid for like four boxes of sawdust instead of copies of their CD b/c he did a deal with someone "under the bridge". Etc.

Laurel, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:09 (seventeen years ago)

I just saw it too (hurray freeview) and yeah, it's pretty good.

The songs are easily the best bits, though. That and "I'm looking for an Australian", which was during a song anyway.

Just got offed, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

The New Zealand posters in their manager's office were priceless.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

OMG, of all the episodes to not be feeling! The big reveal on her teenage-boy infertility / blueballs technique get me laughing just vaguely thinking about it.

Not like Dave talking about seeing a puppy being born, but still

nabisco, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:41 (seventeen years ago)

xpost: Haha, I didn't see! The 'NZ ROCKS!!!' one was pretty good, though, so if that's the guideline...

Also great (perhaps the neatest bit) was the fact that after the first song, it DIDN'T cut back to him at the party looking lonesome, as you'd expect, but it turned out to all have happened.

galdarn it, the USA are like five episodes ahead of us

Just got offed, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:43 (seventeen years ago)

One of them was for Lord of the Rings, and the other one said something like "It's Great! If You Don't Expect Too Much"

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

Finally saw all of season 1, have been rewatching it, and I have "Foux de Fa Fa" stuck in my head all the time at the moment.

there was a dude at the Animal Collective show last night who looked like Jemaine. same hair, same glasses, even a Jemaine-like outfit; there's no way it was not intentional. this led to a bunch of speculation as to whether or not there are people who are so super into this show that they divide up all the people they know into "Brets" and "Jemaines", and, eventually, to the ridiculous sentence "I like to think of myself as a Bret trapped in the body of a Jemaine".

Agreed. "Bowie in Space" and "Robots (The Humans Are Dead)" are two huge examples of this.

sunny successor, Monday, 21 January 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

I was starting to get a bit bored with it (too many scenarios) and then the final episode was a complete classic. Todd was a perfect villain. Crazy Dogs! I loved when Jemaine was supposed to kick him out and somehow ended up kicking out Bret instead. And Murray's confusion of the legality of the sacking. And Bret's angry dance.

"I'm having lunch with Tori Amos"

On August 17, 2007, HBO announced a second season for Flight of the Conchords, originally set to premiere in 2008[7], but which has been postponed to January 2009. Prior to the announcement, Jemaine Clement stated in an interview with The New Zealand Herald, "[HBO] is interested in doing another series but we have to think about it. It's not a definite offer but they have talked about us starting writing but we've got other things we want to do as well".[8] Bret McKenzie has stated in several interviews that the band has used up "97 percent" of their old songs in the first season. In an interview with The Star Ledger, he said "We'd need some time to develop new material. It's like the second album syndrome. It might take a lot longer".[9] Shortly after the renewal announcement, Clement stated in an interview that the second season would likely consist of fewer than twelve episodes "so they could concentrate on 'quality not quantity'".
McKenzie and Clement returned to their home town of Wellington to write for the second season, although the writing process was delayed by the 2007-2008 Writers Strike. Filming for the 10 episode second series began in September 2008. That same month, McKenzie and Clement were quoted in a Q interview that the second series would most likely be the last.

and obviously if you don't think it's funny, your sense of humor is inferior to that of us elitists.
let me rephrase that. uhh. anyone not like futurama? you suck.

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 5 October 2008 23:38 (sixteen years ago)

well maybe not suck.. I meant to say, you should hang out with people that have similar humor to you, and I will hang out with people who have similar humor to me. but don't cross the line. you wouldn't understand funny if it bit you in jewels.

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 5 October 2008 23:40 (sixteen years ago)

L'esprit est toujours la dupe du coeur (Michael White), Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:17 (sixteen years ago)

I still think one of the most surprising things about this show is how easily it manages to make New York look nice. There are parts of the first few episodes where it's all golden-glowy downtown summer streets better than any picturesque NYC film I've ever seen.

nabisco, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:34 (sixteen years ago)

man they should just get rid of the band and have the show be all murray imo

cankles, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 19:57 (sixteen years ago)

Ha, okay, here's another surprising thing: do y'all realize that Rhys Darby looks WAY WAY BETTER as Murray, with goatee, than he does just being Rhys Darby?

You think everyday Rhys Darby looks better than Murray, or you think this show doesn't make downtown NYC look kinda summery-glowy and picturesque?

nabisco, Wednesday, 17 December 2008 20:09 (sixteen years ago)

he looks like the douche he is supposed to with the goatee. he looks like an alrite dude there. you are solid with the NYC observation.

I saw the ep about the love potion that turned all the old ladies horny. It was kinda awful, but not as much as I had expected. Very clear FotC influence though, with a little Spaced thrown in. Felt very Canadian to me, is it?

Yes, it's a pleasing enough collection of sketches.

the joke should be over once the kid is eaten. (chap), Thursday, 26 February 2015 18:48 (ten years ago)

hopefully they play a couple of the new songs i saw them play at summerstage, which were funny but could use some editing for length

Oh good ! I hadn't thought about them in a while.
Started listening to that and they still have it !
So far the highlight is "Summer of 1353".

Their first show was on the BBC, but it didn't stop them taking the premise and some of the songs and scripts to HBO. HBO broadcast this last October and had it available to stream for months, but presumably they either own the entire thing or retained the audio rights, such that they can release it for sale or audio streaming now.

I just looked and it's back on HBO in fifteen days. So, out of seven months, there's, what, one (1) month's holdback where it came off HBO so they can try and sell it in a different format for a fortnight.
