t-shirt dresses: sassy or trashy

i keep buying these because the seem to be "fashionable" at the moment despite the fact that they feel like YOU ARE WEARING PAJAMAS which is pretty awesome. what do you think, are these a stupid-looking trend like crocs or leggings or boots over pants or are they an acceptable look?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:28 (eighteen years ago)

They're too 80s for me. Which is why I won't buy them. Although I did buy a t-shirt knit skirt the other day, which is awesome.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:29 (eighteen years ago)

all trends = stupid looking trends with enough time. LIVE IN THE MOMENT, LADIES

men, however, should never deviate from any fashions post-1965

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

it kind of depends on the cut and what you're wearing with it, basically? haha sorry for the completely useless answer. if you do it like bare legged all summery-like i think it can be cute but when you see the girls with leggings and the t-shirt dress and dumb accessories piled on they kinda look like rachel zoe vomited on them or something.

also boots over pants is not a stupid look

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

I think they're stupid trend but then they look AWFUL on me, so I don't have to worry about it. :) I think you should be comfortable, esp as the heat hits NYC.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)

pix plz

river wolf, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)

when you see the girls with leggings and the t-shirt dress and dumb accessories piled on

80s!! Seriously, this was my look on the first day of 4th grade.

I agree that comfort matters most. Although this is said by someone who has loved wearing crocs.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

okay i know we've had the crocs discussion before but no

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:35 (eighteen years ago)

just no

lookin' sharp!

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:36 (eighteen years ago)

the thing is that i don't think crocs wearers are really that worried about looking cool

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)

Take it to the crocs bitch thread.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

basically i think the main thing is that i really don't like the leggings look at all, moreso than anything to do with any tshirt dresses.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

Err, Jess.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:38 (eighteen years ago)

leggings with tshirt dresses would be way too frumpy! you need to show some leg with something so shapeless and billowy

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

my ex went into apoplectic fits when the subject of leggings came up

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

WAIT LINDS: did you mean any dresses made of jersey ie Tshirt fabric? Or dresses that are specifically tailored like long crew-necked Tshirts?

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:39 (eighteen years ago)

Because I have some jersey sundresses with empire waists and I'm trying to wear them MORE. Problem: v low cut.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

what about those polo shirt dresses? i have one of those that i bought on a whim. some tshirt and polo-shirt dresses are not really shapeless btw, some are vaguely tailored.

i've seen a lot of girls with tshirt dress + leggings and then they belt the tshirt dress with some huge belt, usually in an ugly shade of brown no matter what color the rest of it is :\

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)

That's because there are thousands of horrible brown belts in second-hand stores. For a reason.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

The nice black patent or suede ones got worn out a long time ago.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)

wait is this ^^^ what you all are talking about?

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

well i'm not against brown belts per se, it's more that an oversized brown belt does not actually match every item of clothing in the closet, despite what a certain demographic of women seem to believe.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

I AM KIND OF TOTALLY INTO THAT GREY ONE

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)

dresses made of t-shirt fabric that look like they COULD be shirts but they are a little too long

those hoodie/polo dresses are kinda hot :/

Jordan, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

In theory I am opposed to brown accessories at all, because they're impossible to match to each other or anythng else, there are so many diferent shades and some of them look truly horrible together. My theory is that there's always a COLOR you could substitute with any given outfit to avoid wearing brown.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:46 (eighteen years ago)

okay this anti-brown talk is mentalism

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

the thing is that i don't think crocs wearers are really that worried about looking cool

Exactly. Which is why I'm not going to tell Bell her dresses are uncool. I place a higher value on comfort.

Yeah I don't really dig the look of the long-tee or long-polo dresses. But I'm more into skirts these days in general.

My theory is that there's always a COLOR you could substitute with any given outfit to avoid wearing brown.

Don't tell Gareth this.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:47 (eighteen years ago)

laurel, i basically think you are otm, i mean i have like one brown belt which i haven't worn in at least a year because a) i don't really care for brown much b) i don't actually wear belts ever

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:52 (eighteen years ago)

I think Kate Moss is just wearing a regular tshit. Not much dress action going on.

The ones from the 80s were less fitted and usually cinched by a wide, fluorscent belt. Awesome.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:53 (eighteen years ago)

hoodie dress = yes plz

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

every single one of us here has been so hungover that we've left the house without our pants, come on.

right?

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

The hoodie ones work really well, I assume because lots of girls in just normal hoodies have them kind of long and hip-hugging anyway -- it's not as big of a jump.

Funny how of course the example pics come from American Apparel, since so much of this is their doing: how brilliant, instead of branching out into non-tshirt items, they are just convincing people to wear modified tshirts as EVERYTHING.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:54 (eighteen years ago)

no but i've gone outside without a shirt on which is actually a much bigger deal

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:55 (eighteen years ago)

i've done that too

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

haha first thing i thought when i saw this thread was amer1can appare1 and skinny hipsters

okay but non-fitted long t-shirts as dresses? what are we all 12 and at the beach and a bit freaked abt our changing bodies? b/c that was the last time i wore a long t-shirt as a dress anyway

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)

polo dress = *swoon*

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

but i mean, there is something KIND OF hot about just looking really really comfortable, like you are wearing pajamas, right?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

aa makes girls I would normally find too skinny hot? this explains a lot of my life outlook

mh, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)

the problem with the aa ones is that they kind of are very short. i mean not like kate moss/sienna miller territory but they are pretty short especially if you're inseam-blessed.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

I need waistbands, none of these work for me. Unless I WANT to look like a very sturdy rectangle. The empire-waisted things only work because they distract with "HI BRESTESSES" so you don't really look any lower. And that's on a good day.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

I also guiltily own the man t-shirt with the pattern on that fitted t-shirt dress

mh, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

dudes like lazy girls, yeah

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

that festivalkate.jpg collage is actually two kates and a sienna (in the middle).

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:01 (eighteen years ago)

Someone should start the "oversized men's dress shirt" trend, I bet that would REALLY take off.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

is sienna wearing robin hood boots?

mh, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

but polo dress is a fitted dress not a long t-shirt and looks good (though there are plently of badly made ill-fitting polo dresses too)
xpost

i don't even really wear yoga-type pants in public, so wearing pajamas in public has little appeal, at least in the city life

waists = good

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like the grade of cotton that AA uses, it is a bit thick u_u
an ideal tshirt dress should be a lighter, airier fabric

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

I thought this thread was going to be about the HUGE WHITE TEES that the youth are wearing.

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

with aa it really depends on the item

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:03 (eighteen years ago)

yes, it's her in the robin hood boots. kate manages to pull the look off, but sienna just looks like she forgot to put on her pants.

The Macallan 18 Year, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:04 (eighteen years ago)

the polo dress is made out of the heavier t-shirt cotton but for example this one:
http://www.americanapparel.net/storefront/images/detail/serve.asp?media=rsas313_Mint.jpg
is the super-light v slightly sheer rib cotton. the sheer rib shirts cost more than the regular ones though.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

I think AA uses different cottons for different items? I have several tops of theirs that are VERY thin, ie you can pretty much see skin color through the white one!

AA's colors are just too i dunno, primary
maybe i mean bright
there underwear is a perfect example of their cotton being COARSE and UNREFINED

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:09 (eighteen years ago)

when come back, bring american apparel models

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

yeah.

there was a girl wearing something like this in class today and i thought it was v v flattering.

also: wellies are hot

also, w/r/t looking comfortable = looking hot: plz to ref pretty girls when they're painting their living room. it's all ratty old fall-off-the-shoulder Ts and old jean shorts or whatever.

river wolf, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:10 (eighteen years ago)

i've talked about this before

river wolf, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

their t-shirts are awesome, my best friends own screen press business and use aa almost exclusively. they are phenomenally soft.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:11 (eighteen years ago)

ok i will go back to the store and see if they have any nice soft thin cotton things but i think this is a myth

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

damn it! hoodie dresses only available in medium (at least on the site). i want one!

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

actually one bra that i have from there is a nice cotton but it has weird straps.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

The only AA shirts I own are band shirts. They're all great and fit well. Have never bought any of their other clothes before. I think it's b/c of the models.

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

i want two, actually.

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:13 (eighteen years ago)

as long as they are not ribbed tshirts - i am against those
xpost to something up there

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

hahaha i'm not trying to pressure you into shopping at aa, obviously--the shirred-back boy shorts are the only ones of their underwear i like, for example, because yeah i don't care for the fabric on the other ones that i've picked up.

i own the yellow polo dress, i'm glad it is a hit on the thread because i was unsure about that purchase

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

i have an AA band t-shirt but i don't wear it too often because you can see my ribs

and that's not flattering

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

Here's my question: I currently like AA's basic t-shirts and whatnot, but I notice Uniqlo has basically the same set-up in their stores, only for about 1/3 the cost -- decently cut t-shirts in every color for like $5 each. Anyone know if the Uniqlo stuff falls apart? It doesn't look as good as AA (something about the seams), but it fits okay.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:16 (eighteen years ago)

there are a bunch of uniqlo fans on the noize board iirc (i have never shopped there)

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:17 (eighteen years ago)

that AA hoodie dress A++++++++ would get boner again and again

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

haha that was sort of gross, sorry

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:20 (eighteen years ago)

i stand by the A++++++++

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yes but RW that is recipe for feeling the opp of hot, for me. Men's Vnecks and painting shorts make me a butchy rectangle, again w/ "no waist"!

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:21 (eighteen years ago)

well, it's as much the "i'm only wearing clothes barely" as it is the actual clothes, you know? like, if it's the summertime, and you're painting, wearing clothes is sort of a sop to social decorum and not getting paint on yr parts

river wolf, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

wow, i never would have expected all the hoodie dress love. i wonder how hard it is to pull this of if not an AA model

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:24 (eighteen years ago)

i might actually like the polo dress more despite my love of regular hoodies over regular polos

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty sure going w/o underthings is best way to make EVERY outfit feel like barely wearing. I am happy to wear a slighty heavier outer layer in order to cut back on inner ones.

re hoodie dress: do it!!

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

I suspect a short chubby girl in a hoodie dress would actually grab more eyes than a tall skinny girl in a hoodie dress (who would just look stylish and normal).

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

the hoodie dress is kinda weird tho because it would have to be chilly enough to want a hoodie, and yet warm enough not to wear anything on the legs? curiousssssss

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

uniqlo's quality is okay. definitely good value, but i think that aa t-shirts wear better.

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:26 (eighteen years ago)

xpost - But that of course is the pervy sort of eye-grabbing, not the "she is so stylish and I have the utmost respect for her sartorial agency" kind of eye-grabbing that most of us are more shooting for

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

i will happily be a guinea pig for the hoodie dress, if i can find one at the store later today.

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:27 (eighteen years ago)

liek, it just doesnt seem practical outside of the photoshoot

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

i wonder how hard it is to pull this of if not an AA model

I have a feeling it would be really hard to pull off if in posession of any amount of t and a. In fact, I think it would look pretty horrible on most people.

I'm totally surprised by all the polo dress love! I would never have guessed.

ENBB, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

i doubt that the material is really thick. probably a good early fall item with tights.

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:28 (eighteen years ago)

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

*think

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:29 (eighteen years ago)

Additional interjection: am I nuts, or does AA actually sell men's trousers now?

(xpost LAUREL OTM - hahaha I repeat, there is vast underestimation here of people's appreciation of T & A tucked interestingly into something the shape of a hoodie dress -- it's not the kind of elegant, stylish, non-skanky effect anyone's shooting for, but that doesn't mean people wouldn't totally appreciate it)

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

now i am rethinking this. skanky/transgressive is NOT the look i'm after.

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah nbsco i saw some men's cords at the store the other week. unsurprisingly they were very tight.

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

Omigod, I'm looking at the website and AA are selling EYEGLASSES now

xpost, L, I think surely there's a middle ground where it's not like SKANKY but having some curves in a small item makes it somewhat ... sexier than just kind of being thin and inside one

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:33 (eighteen years ago)

V slender person in slipdress: elegant, potentially hot.

Bulging person in slipdress: evidence of "body" being in dress is much more in yr face, the potential sexuality is actually actual and you either have to acknowledge it as sexuality and appreciate it to some degree, or you're prob going to be slightly repelled by the insistence of it. Cf the expression "two cats fighting in a sack".

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah wahtev, don't listen to me, I wear v tailored clothing and cover up so obv I am not unbiased here.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:35 (eighteen years ago)

the hoodie dress isn't even tight or clingy what are you all even talking about?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

a lot of this stuff doesn't really look skanky or transgressive on real people, I swear

mh, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

But that of course is the pervy sort of eye-grabbing, not the "she is so stylish and I have the utmost respect for her sartorial agency" kind of eye-grabbing that most of us are more shooting for

i think there are a LOT of people shooting for the former - see it all the time!
xpost yeah

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

p.s. please post pictures in hoodie dress

mh, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:36 (eighteen years ago)

i think what makes the hoodie dress awesome and sexy is that its reminiscent of girls wearing dude's hoodies that are too big for them

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

oh that reminds me i need new glasses

xp max otm i think?

river wolf, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

like its not sexy in and of itself but the connotations it brings with it are sexy (like girls wearing hoodies to beach and taking off to reveal hott bathing suit; or post-coital "can i put on your sweatshirt" interaction)

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i wld totally wear hoodie dress!

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

I just like hoodies, ok

Curt1s Stephens, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

having some curves in a small item makes it somewhat ... sexier than just kind of being thin and inside one

ABC, 123

Jordan, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

I never found that look attractive, I think it is the tease of seeming to be covered up at the top juxtaposed with a dress

mh, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:38 (eighteen years ago)

I wd feel skanky in them is what I'm saying, really, Linds. No one I am not sleeping with needs to know exactly where all teh parts are.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

PFFT, much like Uniqlo's crap size selection, the AA pants are locked in a 34" inseam, because men of below-average height do not deserve to wear pants (w/o altering)

PFFT, please join ever national chain store to have decided that my waist is so extraordinarily tiny that they won't bother carrying my size in stores and will try to convince me to order shit off the web

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

PS I am 5'8 and have a gut, not some unclotheable flea

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

feeling skanky also depends on body type (and obv how one feels about body type) - like, if you've got long legs and an ass, a mini skirt is gonna look way more sexy/possibly skanky than it does on a yr typical japanese girl (i use japanese girl as example here b/c i see them all the time getting away with the cutest/sexy things that wld make me look skanky)

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

what's PFFT

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

y'all really have no idea what "trying to find clothes that actually fit properly" hell is really like

strongohulkington, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

i've had to cut back on mini-skirt wearing since i got more of an ass, its true ;_;

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

I am not saying that visible curviness is gross! I'm saying that it's not understated, and you can't ignore or even "ignore" it. I think a lot of the...knee-jerk negative response to let's say statuesque women is about people not wanting to be perceived as "pervy", y'know? Because there is not the unstated cultural value of aesthetic appreciation to fall back on, because that person you are looking at is carrying her sexual signifiers all over the place.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

OMG I am so boring. Pls to revert to hoodie dress talk.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:47 (eighteen years ago)

You mean like with every trashy female pick-up bar outfit ever?

mh, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

feeling skanky also depends on body type (and obv how one feels about body type) - like, if you've got long legs and an ass, a mini skirt is gonna look way more sexy/possibly skanky than it does on a yr typical japanese girl (i use japanese girl as example here b/c i see them all the time getting away with the cutest/sexy things that wld make me look skanky)

Exactly. I was trying to explain this to a friend the other night after I saw a tiny japanese girl wearing the best miniskirt that I would look completely trashy in because I'm really tall so there would be just too much skin.

ENBB, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

hey it's possible for thin, statueque women to have their signifiers hangin out too (rexy hollywood celebrity crotch flashers to thread)

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I don't understand the hoodie dress at all. Polo dresses are always acceptable. I prefer Lacoste to AA though. I love Uniqlo--I'd rather have their T's than AA's. Sometimes I think I want to buy something from AA, but then I go in the store and everything is so samey and overpriced and then I walk around for a while and feel sick to my stomach and then I leave and think maybe next time. To answer the original question, I think a super flimsy T-shirt dress would look better with jeans or some other layers--it seems to skimpy to wear on its own.

Virginia Plain, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

As a guy, this came as a surprise to me just a few days ago! Mrs. Ge and me were on the couch watching tv and as soon as my hand brushed against the fabric, I informed her with great surprise that her dress was nothing more than a long t-shirt. She responded, "Yeah, cotton!" After initially thinking it was a ripoff and stupid (silently), I began to think it was pretty cool, actually. Hers looks nice, anyway.

dean ge, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:54 (eighteen years ago)

also boots over pants is not a stupid look

It kind of says hey look at my boots my boots my boots are great look at my boots I tucked my fuckin' pants in the boots look at 'em effort effort effort style style style boots boots boots!

dean ge, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:57 (eighteen years ago)

it takes like 60 seconds to pull boots on over your pants.

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 19:59 (eighteen years ago)

When I see pants in boots I think it's saying "HI DERE my legs are approx 1 mile long and my calves are small enough to not only fit into normal boot shafts but stuff an entire leg of denim in there too!!" which...if you've got it, I guess!

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

first three unflattering t-shirt dresses: NO
all the AA stuff including polka-dot panties: YES, A MILLION TIMES YES

AA's marketing has improved - less of a heroin-chic/Terry Richardson porno aesthetic these days, more wholesome American hipsters?

milo z, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:01 (eighteen years ago)

ENBB, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

some of these tshirt dresses i'm talking about are kinda like less extreme baby-doll dresses

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:25 (eighteen years ago)

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:30 (eighteen years ago)

Isn't the only thing that makes that a baby doll dress the baby doll in it?

dean ge, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

I thought baby dolls did this:

http://www.rafaelhawaii.com/_images/products/Tarte_Julia_babydoll_NS.jpg

dean ge, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:33 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I think of the first dressas just a minidress. Babydoll dress implies empire waist to me.

ENBB, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:34 (eighteen years ago)

Yep, empire waist is right. And GIS confirms my feelings.

John Justen, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:36 (eighteen years ago)

SRY STNGRHLK, I STILL DRINK A LOT THOUGH SO WE CAN STILL GET ALONG IF I JUST BLAME IT ON TEH BOOS.

John Justen, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

Curt1s, I rarely see chain stores with men's trouser waists that go below 30 -- but places like AA and Urban Outfitters kinda, and expensive boutiques quite often. Skinny-style pants worn a little large might solve the problem for you a little? But my problem is that I have a smallish waist but big enough thighs that the skinny stuff gets awkward.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

this threads making me think of sassy crush :(

deej, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:40 (eighteen years ago)

My complaint there is really mostly with cheap national chains, where even their 30s fit me like another store's 34. A one-store boutique in Soho can still effectively make me feel huge.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

(Also Levis, which seem to believe that a man can have either an ass or some testicles, but not both at once.)

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:43 (eighteen years ago)

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:44 (eighteen years ago)

i want it tooo. but i also want to have legs as long as taht model's which aint gonna happen!

bell_labs, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

i really can't justify spending bills on jeans, so i usually wear wranglers, levis or carhartts. but this also means that i've never had a pair of "perfect" jeans (except for this one pair of 20+ yr old rustlers I inherited from pops that were the fucking jam until i ripped both knees skateboarding and now there's a whole in the crotch patched with this but that's going, too, and now i'm stuck with unbroken-in wranglers that it's too hot to wear)

xp those are the longest legs i have ever seen

river wolf, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

those legs look like they might bend in the middle of the thigh
it's kind of freaking me out

rrrobyn, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

river wolf, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:02 (eighteen years ago)

Neither of those dresses are what I would refer to as a babydoll dress. The first looks like a very abbreviated A-line mod dress, while the second is simply an empire waist dress, which is a universally flattering style. I think of a baby doll dress as having short puffy sleeves and a round neck, with an empire or regular waist and a short flared skirt. Typically flowered. See Coutney Love's 90's fashion sense. I can't find any good pictures bc what I think of isn't really in style now, but . . .

dean ge, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:06 (eighteen years ago)

she's a model, so probably 5'11"-ish, right?

entire body 3 7/8"
bottom of hand to top of head 1 1/2"

1" = 18.32"
2.375*18.32" = 43.51" to apparent waist, right?

milo z, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

Her hand is probably on her high waist, and the rest of that distance is inseam.

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

i'm with virginia. the brown dress is an awesome mod minidress, not a baby doll dress, and the other one just has an empire waist.

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

First of, Uniqlo is American? Sheeit, here I was thinking it's Japanese (as I have only see Uniqlo stores in Japan).

Secondly, Sam, that's Sienna Miller in the second (and forth) picture, if I'm not mistaken. (Which I am not. I like to be in denial about knowing too much about these so-called It Girls. I mean, shit, compare the legs with Moss, Kate has been bombarded with criticism re her diminished looks/legs.)

Neither of those dresses are what I would refer to as a babydoll dress.

On the fucking money. I didn't like 99 procent of'em way back in the 90s. Esp not when Madonna wore that hideous green one. Could have been the fact she also wasn't sporting any eyebrows. EWIE.

Would I wear these t-shirt dresses? Hell no. I'm 34 years old, I'm not 15 years old anymore. I'm not even sure if I would wear'em at that age as I'm not/never had the right body type (read: skinny enough). I mean, shit, I did wear polo dresses (by Polo hah! gawd, I was a snob... willing to spend that money).

I think deep down that no look (aside from crocs har har) is crap given the right person/time and uh cut. I don't like 80 procent of these t-shirt dresses, but on the right person and in the right cut/colour it can look quite sexy/cute. /humbert

Also, Kate Moss is so over. Ek. Even Doherty left her and taht's saying something. When I a crack addict has dumped her, you know blablabla.

Uniqlo opened a store recently in NY--it remains Japanese. I need to go to NY just to buy some of their clothes, oh wait, no I don't. as I have little money.

I love the pregnant-style tops by the way; very comfortable, and no one has asked me when I am due yet.

pretty sure Hope Sandoval wore a baby doll in the Fade Into You video

milo z, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:30 (eighteen years ago)

Oh Kim S Muffsinger, how I adore thy screaming.

Uniqlo has a bunch of NYC stores now, but the main brain-breaker is the Soho one -- it's brain-breakingly gigantic and full of nice-looking cheapness. There's like an entire 1/6th of it that replicates a large American Apparel store's inventory. But see then on there's also a whole 1/6th of it filled with one zillion pairs of men's jeans, except in what seems to be a range of only 3 cuts, 3 colors, and sizes ranging from 30-32 to 32-34! They should just have a cut-out of a lower body that says "if you are not exactly this size, don't even bother."

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:35 (eighteen years ago)

Nice cheap Oxford shirts, though! And the women's shopping looks like it'd be awfully satisfying.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

lauren, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:38 (eighteen years ago)

Now you're getting the idea!

Laurel, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 21:39 (eighteen years ago)

I've always had the idea! I wear women's jeans half the time! When I was a skinny pre-pubescent I still sometimes had to wear "husky" jeans in order to have room for my ass! Don't even get me started on shirt tailoring!

nabisco ive never seen you in real life but based on comments youve made on this thread you are very weird-looking

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 22:38 (eighteen years ago)

or at least, your body is

max, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

No, that's the thing, I'm perfectly normal looking! There are just shortages in (a) trousers cut for non-loose fits on men with more African-shaped hips/thighs, and (b) shirts that understand how someone might be skinny but also broad-shouldered.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Admittedly, I am also picky about stuff fitting/looking right, not just fitting comfortably.

nabisco, Tuesday, 3 July 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

haha i think we have almost opposite bodies b/c i have a small frame but a fairly pronounced gut, and no ass but big thighs. im also picky abt finding well-fitted stuff and its pretty much impossible if youre not fairly normally proportioned.

also when you said "african-shaped" the first thing i thought was that your thighs somehow looked like the shape of the continent, so that everything south of sudan was yr legs and you had a huge butt made up of everything west of algeria

Laurel, Wednesday, 4 July 2007 05:27 (eighteen years ago)

Anyway, the Lands' End Tshirt dress is sort of a classic, not that I've ever owned one:

This is sort of baby doll ish

and kudos to the photog for managing to get an unflattering angle

Virginia Plain, Monday, 9 July 2007 02:31 (eighteen years ago)

that's cute. those little crocheted dresses are awfully popular.. i like (esp in bright colors!) but it's not a style that suits me.. i would wear a shift dress or t shirt dress but i have a large frame esp shoulders and they make me look about four sizes larger than i am.

daria-g, Monday, 9 July 2007 02:37 (eighteen years ago)

damn how did i miss this thread!? one thing i am v. sick of is the trapeze dress, which has been covered under other aliases a bit here. i was very relieved to read in this month's bazaar (the gift subscription that keeps on giving!) that apparently we get structure in clothing back this fall! i can't wait. i am so tired of that baggy ass shapeless shit.

also: i do not like this flimsy thin material shit that costs tons of money. it is all unlined and i don't like watching people's asses jiggle as they walk by (note: not hot, ooh look at that girl shake her ass - i mean literal jiggling of rumps that are not as toned as maybe they should be if you are wearing something of this fabric).

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 02:59 (eighteen years ago)

Everywhere I'm going, all the youngish ladie's shirts AND dresses all look like some Brady Bunch preggo a-splosion with big overall type straps w/cutesy round buttons made of sweatshirt material printed w/random patterns of crap like Monopoly houses and bunnies and rainclouds and crap. (By everywhere I mean Marshall's and Ross, like the only two good clothing stores in my town). HAS this plagued anyone else?

Abbott, Monday, 9 July 2007 03:19 (eighteen years ago)

i like the thin flimsy fabric for summer...it just feels nice. apologies for my jiggley ass tho. at least the "trapeze dresses" or whatever the cut is known as doesn't cling the ass or anything else too tightly?

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 05:09 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, I think what you describe is a very cute and seasonally useful style (sundresses that are basically tents and only touch you at your shoulder straps are A-OK in NYC August) but twee-ed out beyond contemplation with stupid fabrics and over-decoration ie yr terrycloth buttons et al. I feel for you, but it's such a great base pattern....

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 05:14 (eighteen years ago)

I love the trapeze! I tried one on at a thrift store that was named the Goldie Hawn and it was black with form fitting slip on top of which was a chiffon trapeze with delightful ruffles running in a diagonal across the front. Alas, it was about 5 sizes too small.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 9 July 2007 06:58 (eighteen years ago)

I have been obsessed with short, lightweight dresses this summer. My favorite is by L.A. Made, which as far as I can tell is exactly like AA.
I also love my black empire waist dress. I just love throwing one of these one and being basically done getting ready. Also, they are so breezy. VOILA.

I don't have any very basic t-shirt dresses though because they seem to either make me look frumpy or chubby. I feel like the slightly fitted ones say, "Here, look! Look right here! She does have a belly! You can see it now!"

I have a black AA polo dress, which I loved for a few wearings, but then it shrunk on me, so now I can't wear it for fear of exposing the world to my humongo thighs. And I feel like the fabric is too thick to wear them with jeans. Amirite?

KitCat, Monday, 9 July 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

curvy girls can't rock this. we look like giant boxes.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

also it rides up too high in the back.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:39 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, Jessie. I'm basically embracing my box-ness this summer by wearing men's Tshirts. They're $10 for 3, who could say no?

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:41 (eighteen years ago)

i would love to find more lightweight jersey dresses, but they're mostly cut in tremendously unflattering ways that annoy me greatly.

JuliaA, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

^^^OTM!!!!!

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

let's wear men's tshirts and shorts and stand outside bars smoking.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:46 (eighteen years ago)

also yeah wtf is up with LOL WE HAVE DECIDED ONLY TO MAKE DRESSES THAT MAKE YOU LOOK PREGNANT. xpost

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:47 (eighteen years ago)

hah my coworker's sis is barely pregnant but she's here visiting and they decided this is perfect time for her to stock up on maternity clothes because of the combo of end of summer sales and the fact that EVERYTHING in the store is empire waist/potato sack shaped and perfect for prego ladies.

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

let's wear men's tshirts and shorts and stand outside bars smoking.

Another benefit of V-necks: you can always reach your lighter when it's stored in yr bra.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

i kinda like the pregnancy shirts

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:52 (eighteen years ago)

you just want a baby.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

oh GOD no

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:54 (eighteen years ago)

i think it is b/c they are flattering to the b00bs, which is somewhere that i need some help

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 16:56 (eighteen years ago)

it is bc you are so tiny that there's no way anything could ever make you look baggy.

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:01 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, of course! Wildly different styles flattering to different people blah blah blah! Please. Don't bother sending me any memos when A-lines and giant white plastic buttons and assorted 60s influences go in and out of style, I'll be too busy flipping my hair to answer.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:03 (eighteen years ago)

I need an inexpensive source of high-waisted 50s-style jeans. BELLY MUST BE HIDDEN.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

i want to go to the aa shop down the street to see if they have the hoodie dress, but the 98º degree heat is putting me off.

lauren, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:06 (eighteen years ago)

xpost - the high-waisted jeans that mybabyjo.com carries are so cute, but they have a cherry embroidered on the pocket which is a huge stumbling block for me.

lauren, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

Hm that said I am inexplicably wearing a long pleated skirt today like a fucking El-Ed major. Thank you, TJ Maxx.

Uggghh Lauren, I can't even THINK about hoodies and I'm sitting in the AC. Don't be a hero!

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

h&m has some high-waisted jeans that are like $40...

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:08 (eighteen years ago)

I need to become a professional thief. :/

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm sure you can shoplift from dept. stores at an amateur level.

Ms Misery, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:12 (eighteen years ago)

Haaaaaaaaaaaate the feel of high waists. Hate. Get off me, clothes! Stop impeding my circulation/digestion/pulmonary function.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

MBJ dresses selling for $130 a pop makes me want to kill kittens. I have to impose some extreme penalty on myself if I don't get some sewing done by next weekend.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

i tried the hoodie dress on (in an UNAIRCONDITIONED dressing room). it only comes in size medium, and it's basically a more tailored pullover hoodie that hits at mid-thigh. if i were 5lbs lighter and one cup size smaller it would have looked great, but as it was it looked a bit slutty. i'd say that it would look best on a size 8 with a moderate bosom. obviously it will fit smaller ladies, but it might be a bit too shapeless.

lauren, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:46 (eighteen years ago)

but, but slutty IS great.

milo z, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

Truly a woman for the ages, Lauren. Kudos to you.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:49 (eighteen years ago)

lauren makes me go HMMM maybe I try this dress.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:50 (eighteen years ago)

i'm kind of sad it doesn't work for me. the purple and the teal are very pretty, and the midweight material is extremely soft/cozy.

lauren, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:51 (eighteen years ago)

I just GISed "kinderwhore" to see if I could get a good image of a 90s babydoll dress, but no dice.

At my high school in the 90s I don't remember any girls wearing the babydoll dress.. but I remember t-shirt dresses, which I guess are back now? Have they come and gone over the years? The polo t-shirt dresses were def popular around '95/'96.

billstevejim, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

lauren always looks awesome, too! excellent clothes, hair, etc.!

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

tee hee.

lauren, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:08 (eighteen years ago)

it would look best on a size 8 with a moderate bosom
oh man this is me if i lose like 15-20 lbs
but is a hoodie dress really the goal i should be shooting for? i think maybe it is exactly the level of shallow/hip that could motivate me (also it wld seem i have a nickel allergy/sensitivity :/ and will have to give up a number of foods? waht? nooo. maybe hoodie dress will maek it better)

rrrobyn, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:25 (eighteen years ago)

Waaaait, why are you giving up foods for a nickel allergy?? You mean, ingesting it? I can't have nickel on my skin for very long but somehow my diet has never come up for discussion in relation to breaking out from cheap jewelry.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

yeah ingesting it is a big deal for some people! but obv not all people. it wld seem i am one of them? it wld explain a lot of things (even though i am quite healthy in general, have had weird gut/skin reactions and not been able to trace but seem to be pointing to nickel) am investigating
^ not abt t-shirt dresses

rrrobyn, Monday, 9 July 2007 21:36 (eighteen years ago)

Lauren, a cherry on top, or in the back, makes everything better. I think I've seen those jeans, and I doubt highly they would like passable on me, otherwise I would scoop them up. Also, I fit the profile for the droodie monstrosity, although I seem one of the few on here who is not interested.

Virginia Plain, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

is it "cheating" to wear shorts under a really short dress?

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:41 (eighteen years ago)

like, would be probably tooo short to be decent, but longer than the shorts would be?

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

i think you're only cheating people out of seeing your bum
you should wear hotpants!!

rrrobyn, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

i bet they have them at AA

rrrobyn, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

yes! hotpants is what i'm thinking.
i am striving towards decency. i actually wore a slip today.

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

i wear men's boxer briefs under short skirts or dresses. i don't like the way women's boyshorts fit.

JuliaA, Monday, 9 July 2007 22:50 (eighteen years ago)

slips are sometimes necessary! i have slips! i need to dye them nice colours though
xpost
am still on search for the perfect boyshort e.g. the one that doesn't ride up. i wear short bike shorts sometimes with my shorter skirts, but only when riding a bike
