Hooray!
1993 - United States 2 England 0
Graham Taylor was not having the happiest time as England manager when he took his side to the States to face a USA side preparing for the forthcoming year's World Cup, and things got even worse in the USA Cup with Taylor's increasingly disspirited side falling to an embarassing defeat. Soon afterwards, their chances of returning for the World Cup were over, along with Taylor's international career.

Some assholes left all their discarded works in the parking lot at work. The fact that our building is right by a big-ass ripe for brushfire-type open field, which is next to a large lumber storage yard, should have maybe clued them in that this ain't the best place to be lightin' 'em off. Shit, weren't these people raised right? Everybody know that you put your expelled fireworks into a bucket of water to make sure they're dead.

DC fireworks were great. Earlier in the day one could see for free either salsa great Willie Colon and band; Hari Krishnas with multiple stages and tents; a smoke-in with bands; black christian rockers on another stage; traditional folk music from Wales at the free Smithsonian Folklife fest; danceable traditional Latin sounds from Colombia and elsewhere ("Viva Colombia, Viva America" went one song) at the Smithsonian Fest plus in another part of the fest hiphop poetry with one poet singing along with Marvin Gaye's rendition of the National Anthem; the Air Force Band in the Air & Space Museum doing "Foxy Lady" and "My Country Tis of Thee" and Barry Manilow and Aretha Franklin at the Capitol. A diverse enough mix to make you (or at least me) put away your(my) cynicism re politics for a day.

Mentioned on CSPAN channels' History TV, BookTV: there were a lot of British loyalists, and I'd like to know more about how they fared, adjusted, because now I'm one, because yadda yadda did away with slavery with nothing like the US Civil War. I like to think that if things could have been worked out soon enough, also no American Revolutionary War, but either way, to have gone from Empire to Commonwealth might have spared North America and the rest of the world a lot of horrible things, though not all of 'em. Maybe American resources would have had corrupting, delusional effect on Empire, dunno. But mainly thinking about slavery.

i grilled all day! sloooooooow ribs and then sausage and hot dogs and corn and potatoes and carrots and peppers. we got a grill awhile back. i didn't think i'd really take to it late in life but it was enjoyable. started prep at 10 am and we ate at 2:30.
grills are great though. for all kinds of things. we got a propane one. can't believe i haven't been eating like this forever.
sadly, the 4th was my day off anyway cuz my store is closed tuesdays. i LOVE closing on holidays. you know, so that i can spend the day in prayer or so i can clean my guns or whatever.

History is usually meager pickings if you're looking for uplifting inspiration. I'm speaking here of every nation's history. But if you're a US citizen there are a few glimmers of goodness intermixed into US history and if there's any day to reflect on those highlights instead of all the bloody minded rapacity and cruelty, then today is a good day for it.

i'm sure these things have been mentioned here but...
- in the funding bill, ICE is going to receive eight times the entire fbi budget each year. - laura loomer, trump's rumored girlfriend, tweeted about feeding "65 million" people to alligators at that florida facility. 65 million is the number of latinos in america, not undocumented immigrants. - also in the bill, benefits were cut dramatically and new work requirements were imposed on medicaid during a time when employment is harder than ever to find. just look around at all the people you know who have sent hundreds of applications to no avail.- i still see trump flags all over the place even though the election is over. what do people actually think they are celebrating? mindless hatred? who benefits from any of this?
― treeship., Friday, 4 July 2025 16:53 (one month ago)
from a substack called "dissent in bloom"
To put that in perspective, if you make ~$50,000/dollars a year, you would have to work for about three MILLION years to earn what ICE gets in ONE.It is more than thirty times what the IRS gets to go after tax fraud. It is twenty-one times what the ATF gets to stop gun trafficking.Thirteen times more than what the DEA gets to fight drug cartels.Eight times the entire FBI budget. This is more money than all the federal agencies get in a year combined.Of course, the MAGA loyalists say this is about border security. National security. But the numbers don’t lie. This is about building a national apparatus of control, one that targets immigrants now but sets a precedent for broader domestic repression later. And here’s the uncomfortable truth: there are only so many immigrants. The federal government knows this. ICE knows this. They are not preparing to police immigration.. they appear to be preparing to police everyone.
It is more than thirty times what the IRS gets to go after tax fraud.
It is twenty-one times what the ATF gets to stop gun trafficking.
Thirteen times more than what the DEA gets to fight drug cartels.
Eight times the entire FBI budget.
This is more money than all the federal agencies get in a year combined.
Of course, the MAGA loyalists say this is about border security. National security. But the numbers don’t lie. This is about building a national apparatus of control, one that targets immigrants now but sets a precedent for broader domestic repression later. And here’s the uncomfortable truth: there are only so many immigrants.
The federal government knows this. ICE knows this. They are not preparing to police immigration.. they appear to be preparing to police everyone.
this combined with the palantir stuff really makes sense to me. trump is making his own secret police apart from other established law enforcement agencies.

yep sucks
i like this holiday. there's a lot to like about the land and the culture even though the present moment is fucked up. but here's the thing, when wasn't that true? never. anyway i have the day off, 420, chips and guac for later, it's high summer, did a beautiful run this morning in a beautiful lil gully. i feel celebratory. but i'm holding space for all the really bad news and the really angry people. who have every right to be angry and so forth. did i say holding space, i meant scrolling past. tee hee.

I'm having a rare afternoon martini before a party at my cousin's, for which I'd have needed the fortification anyway.
I love the lot of you.

like everyone was in unanimous agreement that it was not only cool but righteous?
it wasn't unanimous (e.g. see Wm Penn), but the anti-racists were always a fretful minority mostly concentrated in the areas already ethnically cleansed, whereas the murderous racists operated with complete impunity at the frontiers.

we had a massive fireworks warehouse explosion in Northern California, that appears to have killed a bunch of people.. so I'm really not into the fireworks AT ALL this year.. also, I feel for the dogs, the poor dogs
in normal years it's probably great to celebrate our hard-won freedom from tyranny, but 2025 is not one of those years

Like fools the daughter and I are in DC today trying to see the city and avoid parades and whatnot. Lotsa maga looking folks on the streets today. I saw a dude in full Captain America gear hold a sign that revealed Trump to be the red skull. Gave him a thumbs up.

The entire mall and all the stuff I wanted to show the kid was closed because of the stupid fireworks event later.
― Cow_Art, Friday, 4 July 2025 22:03 (one month ago)
you should go to Trump's picnic

only time i went to the (national) mall on july 4 was in the late 90s and basically all i can remember is lounging on the west side of the washington monument and this large barely dressed pot-bellied guy, who was out of his mind on something, was meandering through and past everyone's blankets
and he had an outie bellybutton that was the size of a fucking silver dollar

It's also triggering my PTSD, although it's not as bad as it was five years ago.

After the Eaton Fire, no one here in the cities surrounding Altadena wants to do much of anything with fire and I agree with them

Attempting to trick the brain into thinking of (night six of) fireworks not as a stressor, but as an apt soundtrack for an apoplectic state.
