I'd be really interested in what your friend has to say! The biggest problem is that I'm only looking for a year of work, really. Which doesn't really go over that well w/employers. Then again, they don't have to know.

river wolf, Sunday, 8 July 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

Is that the 7th heaven ep where Rev suddenly got all "omg I have to do lots of fun things" and he stood up against the evil slutty teacher who hit on him and etc? I think I saw that one a few months ago, and I hardly ever watch that show.

yeah i am a little frightened of any more free shows...

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 14:35 (eighteen years ago)

jordan: jessie IS 8080! "i don't like labels" = "i want the freedom to sleep with other people"

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

Not necc! I think you are often right but let's not worry Jordan unduly -- it can also mean "don't want to clutch a new thing too tightly, let's go with the flow for now". Or y'know something like that.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

ask her if you can say she's your girlfriend on facebook

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

right. that is v. true. when they are still saying that in 3 months, you should perhaps worry more but sometimes at beginning you don't wanna scare someone off?
xpost

hahahaha bell!

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think it's necessarily about sleeping with other people either. It could also be "I would like you to not feel safe and sound and still work hard at trying to get with me."

Or it could just be trying to be all cool like, "I am not a psycho, I am not expecting a ring in six mos."

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

yes i suppose it could be any # of things but after a while, is unacceptable. laurel is right though, it's still early.

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:22 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah that's exactly it, it's only been a month so I don't want to push it. :/

ask her if you can say she's your girlfriend on facebook

This phrase totally passed through my head at the time.

Jordan, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

"I would like you to not feel safe and sound and still work hard at trying to get with me."

ooh interesting

Jordan, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, I was just thinking about that too. Applying to past, waiting for mental computations to finish.

Laurel, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:26 (eighteen years ago)

it took my ex-gf like 2-3 mos to call me her boyfriend (she used the term "special friend") mostly b/c of commitment issues, and we ended up dating for almost 3 years, but that was a sort of devastatingly unhealthy relationship so ymmv

max, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:28 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i am pretty pessimistic about that stuff but that is my own past crap influencing, so don't listen to me! i am just grumpy today because it's monday and i'm still banned and my sunburn is starting to itch/be realllly uncomfortable but my office is like a meat locker and i really just don't want to be at work at all these days, etc.

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:29 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like to do the boyfriend/girlfriend thing unless I think I'm going to be with that person for a good while. Maybe she is the same way. Either way, it's not a huge deal at one month, as everyone's said.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

maybe we should have an unban tza poll.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

Why not just say "I'm not ready yet" or something truthful instead of "I hate that term"? That just sounds lame.

Ms Misery, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:31 (eighteen years ago)

eh jon already asked the mods about it
xpost

yes, sam, that was my point - something like 'i hate that term' makes me more likely to suspect bs than if you are like 'yeah, not yet'

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:32 (eighteen years ago)

yes, ban needs to be lifted so i can stop reading ile

strongohulkington, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:33 (eighteen years ago)

"I hate that term" is obviously bs but doesn't necessarily mean horrible hidden truths. So many people are insecure these days, and it's easier to hide behind even obvious bullshit than be honest about stuff.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

man i am never getting unbanned.

hstencil, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

yours was a permaban. mine was only sposed to be 3 days.

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

in britisher time sundays don't exist.

jessie monster, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

maybe it was 3 business days? haha

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:37 (eighteen years ago)

and you believed him?

hstencil, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:38 (eighteen years ago)

So many people are insecure these days, and it's easier to hide behind even obvious bullshit than be honest about stuff.

Insecurity is part of human nature, not a trend. If someone's taking the risk to expose themselves and ask a difficult question only an asshole would give them BS instead of an actual answer. (Sorry, Jordan - no longer about your situation specifically.)

Ms Misery, Monday, 9 July 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

i wld rather talk about leathered teen stars and the hilarity of it all than rehash the same crap! i am already grumpy enough today (see above) and i also forgot to add: my hairdryer tried to kill me this morning by smoking and almost starting an electrical fire while i was using it :( so, no more ban talk, k dudes?

no it was a cookout, jessie! i have tried countless times (the thought occurred to me sat but i didn't say anything) to explain the difference to yanks, but they still insist on calling it a bbq.

tehresa, Monday, 9 July 2007 19:52 (eighteen years ago)

see morbs, the mere fact that you say 'texist' means you don't understand. carolina bbq is v. important business.

brisket is great, but i think of brisket as something for passover, not "bbq".

The only safe thing is to say you're grilling unless you're absolutely certain you can stand toe-to-toe with a true Q-thusiast.

you never hear about "northern bbq" and these seem to be the people who keep wanting to call grilling and cooking out "bbqing"

bell_labs, Monday, 9 July 2007 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

it wasn't their fault, it was the restaurant at the event. I don't remember their name. npr was awesome! I got all the free beer and food I wanted and afterwards they gave me free aquarium and imax tickets as a thank you!

and yeah, it was boston. although I would not be surprised to run into this problem anywhere north of the mason-dixon.

that was a general, generic "unban me," to the powers-that-be of ilx - who also need to know that people use "bbq" in a generic sense too.

i could do lunch tho honestly if i'm getting hill country-style brisket, i like to take my time. dunno how they do it there but going on a weekend might be more suitable for a large crowd, too (ie. we may have to wait a while).

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know if that's directed to me, but no. some food writer friends went two years ago and said it was amazing. they had special wristbands that let them cut the long lines at each sample booth and they got a lot of dirty looks, but said the food and beer was amazing.

i didn't get to try everything but the pulled pork from black jack (charleston, sc) were awesome.

the beans at fette sau are NOT that good, and they're $5 for a shitty little cup! what a rip!

tehresa, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

we went on a whim late on the saturday. only the salt lick, jake's, and 17th street had long lines. we got pulled pork from mitchell's, which was absolutely amazing, and brunswick stew.

lauren, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

even $2.50 for beans is outrageous.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:34 (eighteen years ago)

re: fette sau: i thought the pork ribs were fantastic (though nowhere near as good as the ones mr. lauren makes with the backyard smoker) but basically everything else we had was eh, and pricey. smoke joint, too, was extremely disappointing. just flat-out bad.

lauren, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

my major complaint about fette sau was that they pride themselves on all their whiskeys but the bartender who served me knew NOTHING about them and ended up recommending something totally wrong for the aspects of a bourbon i told him i liked. don't be all 'hey we have 40 whiskeys' and then staff the bar w/ people who don't know shit. if you are going to specialize, put the effort in.

tehresa, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:40 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:56 (eighteen years ago)

You are correct. Per Wikipedia:

Big Red is a soft drink that was created by Grover C. Thomsen in Waco, Texas (1937). Originally, it was known as "Sun Tang Red Cream Soda." It is generally considered to be one of many American varieties of cream soda, and is the original "red cream soda". Until the late seventies it was marketed exclusively in Central and South Texas and around Louisville, Kentucky.[1] The drink is highly popular in the Southern United States and is well known for its unique taste and red color. Its unique taste, though often thought to be strawberry or bubble gum, is created by mixing orange and lemon oils with the traditional vanilla used in other cream sodas. It is produced and distributed by Dr Pepper/Seven Up, Inc. under license from Big Red, Ltd., based in Waco, Texas. Several other red drinks have tried to gain market such as Mountain Dew's red zone but have frequently failed to gain the same popularity as Big Red.

John Justen, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 00:58 (eighteen years ago)

weirdddd... i don't really like sodas so much but it's so bizarre i might try it. i will probably just drink booze, though.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)

my major complaint about fette sau was that they pride themselves on all their whiskeys but the bartender who served me knew NOTHING about them and ended up recommending something totally wrong for the aspects of a bourbon i told him i liked. don't be all 'hey we have 40 whiskeys' and then staff the bar w/ people who don't know shit. if you are going to specialize, put the effort in.

-- tehresa, Tuesday, July 10, 2007 12:40 AM (2 hours ago) Bookmark Link

lol if they staffed the bar with people who actually knew bourbons, they wouldn't have a clientele.

(just jokin' as the people at spuyten d. are very knowledgeable about their beers. it's more just early restaurant screwups. that said, i still don't like their pricing scheme.)

big red is a wonderful abomination and i will gladly go anywhere that serves it.

hstencil, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 03:33 (eighteen years ago)

no, no, no. the pink teacup is disgusting. i've seriously seen some nasty shit in there, even for new york restaurants. obviously eating out requires some suspension of disbelief, but that place is too much.

i wasn't so sure she wanted him to stay
what to say...what to say
but soon she was down, soon he was low
at a quarter past...a holy no...
she had to turn around
when she couldn't hold, oh...she folded...
a dissident is here
escape is never, the safest path
a dissident, a dissident is here
and to this day, she's glided on
always home but so far away
like a word misplaced
nothing said, what a waste
when she had contact...with the conflict...
there was meaning, but she sold him to the state
she had to turn around
when she couldn't hold...she folded...
a dissident is here
escape is never, the safest path
a dissident, a dissident is here
she gave him away when she couldn't hold...no...she folded...
a dissident is here
escape is never, the safest path

couldn't hold on...she couldn't hold...no...she folded...

i have no beef with jon's decision; it was a fair vote, and the result was comprehensive. the final straw was disappointing, though. you should always check what board you're posting to, especially if your thread's about something as contentious or twee as ornithology. hopefully things will reset come ilx 3.0

Some of the data is available here, and in almost all cases it seems that t-mobile and verizon outperform cingular/at&t

well sure, t-mobile's the cheapest and verizon's the best. except t-mobile doesn't come close to outperforming cingular in, you know, number of customers. so what are the more than twice as many people on cingular paying extra for?

t-mobile uses cin/att network when out of t-mobile range

well, sort of.
http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic57210.html
http://forums.mobiledia.com/topic34491.html

and does this survive the finalization of the merger? also, cingular roams on alltel, which i'm not sure t-mobile does.

Is they really have HSDPAPSAPDAPPD everywhere it makes it rly rly weird for the iPhone to be 2.5g

not really. apparently, at least part of the reason the iPhone like (to date) the blackberry is edge is because it's better for email even if worse for browsing.

WHY IS IS BETTER FOR EMAIL MR BULLSHIT OPINION

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Tuesday, 10 July 2007 21:33 (eighteen years ago)

Jobs also downplayed concerns over the iPhone's dependence on AT&T's EDGE network, which is slower than 3G (third-generation) networks.

"You know every (AT&T) Blackberry gets its mail over EDGE. It turns out EDGE is great for mail, and it works well for maps and a whole bunch of other stuff. Where you wish you had faster speed is on a Web browser. It's good enough, but you wish it was a little faster. That's where sandwiching EDGE with Wi-Fi really makes sense because Wi-Fi is much faster than any 3G network," Jobs told the Wall Street Journal.

He said the iPhone had been designed to switch to Wi-Fi when such networks are detected.

one month passes...

banned again! twice in 24 hours!

anyway, i was gonna say, the pulled pork portion at pnt is PLENTY. not too small at all! especially when you are getting a side with it.

tehresa, Friday, 24 August 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

it's usually enough for me but if on the off chance it ain't i just go get a slice o' pie or something. no biggie. always worth getting the box option with a side, sometimes even 2, as well.

hstencil, Friday, 24 August 2007 01:33 (eighteen years ago)

i can't imagine eating more than the entree and 1 side, esp if i am drinking at rockstar to boot.

once they took a long time with my chicken so they gave us this plate of like 5 donuts. we managed about 1.5 of them between a large group, i think.

tehresa, Friday, 24 August 2007 01:39 (eighteen years ago)

the donuts are INSANE

hstencil, Friday, 24 August 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

OMG DONUT IS HUEG

tehresa, Friday, 24 August 2007 01:40 (eighteen years ago)

You were too delicate for this world.

yes, god forbid people be happy about anything.

tehresa, Friday, 24 August 2007 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

the donut plate day was on my birthday! they also gave you WAY too much chicken as i recall.

bell_labs, Friday, 24 August 2007 02:35 (eighteen years ago)

How the hell you people put up with Jon's temperamental sensitive-boyitude is beyond me.

libcrypt, Friday, 24 August 2007 02:41 (eighteen years ago)

the kiu thread was kinda grandstandy and douchey but i just didnt open it much.

chaki, Friday, 24 August 2007 02:47 (eighteen years ago)

thirded

tehresa, Friday, 24 August 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah puhleeze -- wasn't the complaining about people bitching & moaning on CIO/bummerz the reason for KIU in the first place? Think we have to admit at this point that the fact that threads about ppl's lives get twitterpated is just natural b/c people WANT TO TELL US ABOUT THEMSELVES. C'mon, this shit is easy.

Laurel, Friday, 24 August 2007 16:16 (eighteen years ago)

there was an overlap/fine line between braggin and kiu, but yeah, if jon can start a thread every time a random thought pops into his head, why can't people share things on all the other threads? it is human nature, esp when most of us know each other and are very friendly/concerned with each other's lives

tehresa, Friday, 24 August 2007 16:22 (eighteen years ago)

i do like that i got harassed for starting the bummerz thread and now jon posts on it more than anyone!

i don't know that that has anything to do with deletion of threads bc as i recall, we could never undelete before. though, we could unlock, i believe, so you have a point actually.

tehresa, Friday, 24 August 2007 16:27 (eighteen years ago)

How the hell you people put up with Jon's temperamental sensitive-boyitude is beyond me.

Some of us don't.

Dr Morbius, Friday, 24 August 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)

<a href="http://www.shirky.com/writings/group_enemy.html";>You are at a party, and you get bored. You say "This isn't doing it for me anymore. I'd rather be someplace else. I'd rather be home asleep. The people I wanted to talk to aren't here." Whatever. The party fails to meet some threshold of interest. And then a really remarkable thing happens: You don't leave. You make a decision "I don't like this." If you were in a bookstore and you said "I'm done," you'd walk out. If you were in a coffee shop and said "This is boring," you'd walk out.

You're sitting at a party, you decide "I don't like this; I don't want to be here." And then you don't leave. That kind of social stickiness is what Bion is talking about.

And then, another really remarkable thing happens. Twenty minutes later, one person stands up and gets their coat, and what happens? Suddenly everyone is getting their coats on, all at the same time. Which means that everyone had decided that the party was not for them, and no one had done anything about it, until finally this triggering event let the air out of the group, and everyone kind of felt okay about leaving.

tehresa, Sunday, 26 August 2007 16:21 (eighteen years ago)

i love the mark bar.

lauren, Sunday, 26 August 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)

hah lauren i was in the area and took a friend to the bar where we had noise drinks with tim ellison and shasta. apparently it is a gay bar? was a funny realization when we noticed that all other groups were same sex and the music was a little too ridiculous to be "ironic".

does anyone have experience with the b48 bus?

tehresa, Sunday, 26 August 2007 18:19 (eighteen years ago)

really?? huh. i think when we were there, the only other customers were an incredibly wasted (but quiet) polish guy and some older neighborhood folks.

lauren, Sunday, 26 August 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

yeah, it seemed chill and not too overcrowded so i was kind of shocked when we sat down and started to realize! perhaps that's the difference between a sunday afternoon and saturday night. it's also possible that it was not originally intended as a gay bar but has been adopted as one since its opening.

tehresa, Sunday, 26 August 2007 18:33 (eighteen years ago)

al said b48 was "infuriating" as part of a regular commute. where are you going on it and how often?

lauren, Sunday, 26 August 2007 18:44 (eighteen years ago)

hmmmph. i am considering it as a morning commute method m-thurs - to franklin and then get the 2 from there.

tehresa, Sunday, 26 August 2007 19:25 (eighteen years ago)

ah. he said that what he ended up doing was taking the g to downtown brooklyn and then walking a few blocks to the red line.

lauren, Sunday, 26 August 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)

i have tried that before. still takes an hour. i am trying to figure out if there is any possible way to not have an hour-long commute! i have basically given up hope at this point, though.

I posted it on "dewey cheatham and lol" last night, and when I went back to read that thread this morning, you were all "why do you keep c+p'ing this everywhere?!?" -- which totally confused me. It looks like Jon was the one who posted it on "posts very much in character," which I didn't read until later. Cheers.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 17 September 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)

I just wanted you to understand that I only reposted it once, to the thread you posted on. And the exchange wasn't meant to be funny at all. I don't know why you got all worked up about it.

I'm totally fine with the Chicago thread as long as people that don't even live in Chicago are able to resist offering pointed judgments of my character every time there's a heated discussion.

jaymc, Monday, 17 September 2007 19:48 (eighteen years ago)

ally my friend just called and offered to give me $$ for some work tonight so i will do that for a while then harefield road. no saints cryin' to be had, tho maybe i'll wear my shirt to be "ironical" as williamsburgers do.

ms misery, i might still make it to austin. my buddy cliff there is moving in december (probably to nyc - sucker!) and i might take his room. i haven't decided yet what i'm gonna do, kinda depends on how next month goes and whether i feel like louisville is some place i'm gonna stay. oddly enough i might spend a fair amount of november in nyc.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 24 September 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)

Does Metropolitan still allow dogs in the back garden?

If so, Bucket and Mischa will come drink with you guys sometime.

Jon Lewis, Monday, 24 September 2007 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

I've never seen dogs there; I wouldn't recommend it on a Sat night, when it's usually too crowded for humans.

Dr Morbius, Monday, 24 September 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

We brought ours into the back once during someone's birthday meet-up. This was probably 2 years ago.

True, wouldn't dream of it on a weekend. We brought them into Barcade on a weekend once (another b-day party) and they were all "HI THESE FUN HUMANS! HI! HI!" for about five minutes and then their eyes glazed over.

Of course, my eyes glaze over these days just walking past Barcade on ANY night of the week...

Dear Catsup Dude:

I have realized the error of my ways. I now have a full appreciation of the Noise Board's right to self-determination and will no longer impinge on their god-given right of sovereignty. Will you please unban me?

But moving into foreign territory and proclaiming my supremacy over it (a totally Amurrican thing to do) was what got me banned in the first place.

Maybe I should try sounding Canadian.

A snack food is seen in Western culture as a type of food that is not meant to be eaten as part of one of the main meals of the day (breakfast, lunch, supper). Rather, the food is intended as a snack: something to temporarily tide a person's hunger, provide a brief supply of energy for the body, or something to be eaten for enjoyment of the taste.

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:10 (eighteen years ago)

jesus christ. i have never made anything your problem, tombot. i just wanted to know why i was banned. you didn't have to unban me. maybe if you wanted to stop having to clean up after jon you should take away his privileges since you know this will just happen again and again.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

maybe if you want to stop having to do a bunch of thankless shit you should stop being a mod

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:15 (eighteen years ago)

If you're actually wondering why you're banned and not trying to stir up drama, perhaps a public forum isn't the best way to find out?

Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

i dunno, i like reading it

it's not "thankless shit" that bothers me it's the repetition. anyway I've just discovered something called e-mail in the last few minutes and it's pretty cool! see you kids later

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

Let this play out in the court of public opinion (preferably in the form of Youtube videos).

HI DERE, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

someone did ask you why i was banned and you didn't give a reason.

bell_labs, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:18 (eighteen years ago)

and then you banned them.

Yes, but the cross-section of the board that:

a) doesn't know precisely wtf this is about; and
b) doesn't really think this is any of their business

are probably looking at this entire thread and thinking "Why aren't they emailing each other?"

HI DERE, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:28 (eighteen years ago)

latebloomer, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

No, I know it's somewhat gratuitous to post about NoYCe drama. But I'm starting to think that actual wrong is being done and I'm getting uncomfortable feeling like being quiet about it is a) helping cover up poor behavior, and b) leaving attacked parties unsupported. If having an opinion about unwarranted character slurs and vileness means being banned, whatevs.

Laurel, Wednesday, 5 March 2008 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

thank you laurel. it is appreciated.

Laurel, Friday, 7 March 2008 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

u "mad"?

mookieproof, Friday, 7 March 2008 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know about "mad" but I'm pretty creeped out that when Jon wants to discredit a woman's opinion about anything, he attacks her sexuality. And since bell labs and I have just been mocked for opposite offenses, clearly he's just going to pick and choose how offensive to be without any real grounds.

Laurel, Friday, 7 March 2008 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

uhm, i don't get the joke or think it applies to me. it must be jon zinging himself.
