It MUST be true, it's reported on Page Six!
July 17, 2007 -- IT was fight night at an L.A. comedy club last week when Jon Lovitz roughed up Andy Dick over the murder of their "Saturday Night Live" colleague, Phil Hartman.
Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, who witnessed the assault, said, "Jon picked Andy up by the head and smashed him into the bar four or five times, and blood started pouring out of his nose." Lovitz told Page Six, "All the comedians are glad I did it because this guy is a [bleep]hole."

hmm
― Surmounter, Thursday, 19 July 2007 06:59 (eighteen years ago)
I really *don't * want to link to Dennis Miller's site, but he interviewed Lovitz right after this and got the full details.
― Elvis Telecom, Thursday, 19 July 2007 07:11 (eighteen years ago)
Bottom line, go Lovitz!

That Dennis Miller interview is great.
― Hurting 2, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)
All this just reminds me of that depressing last season of Newsradio where Lovitz replaced Hartman in the cast (especially depressing considering that earlier in the series, Lovitz had guested on the show as 2 completely different and much funnier characters).
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)
"Lovitz was still stewing over what he perceived as a tasteless Dick joke, ..."
Does Eonline see what they did there?
― dean ge, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)
WTF? No. Andy Dick may be a bona-fide, dyed-in-the-wool asshole, but he's not doing fucking Subway commercials. Or, you notice, talking to Dennis Douchenozzle Miller.
― kenan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)
the two signs of suicide.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 19 July 2007 13:59 (eighteen years ago)
No, but Lovitz has one of the saddest comedy careers ever without actually going all Belushi on everyone.
― kenan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)
When the two ran into each other at the Laugh Factory last Wednesday, "I wanted him to say he was sorry for the 'Phil Hartman hex,' " Lovitz told us. "First he says, 'I don't remember saying that.' Then he leans in and says, 'You know why I said it? Because you said I killed Phil Hartman.' Which I never said. Then he asked me to be in his new movie.
best part

i disagree. there are many much sadder careers in comedy. much, much sadder.
i mean, we're talking about the world's sad sackest industry here. lovitz is on top compared to 95% of the people in that business.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)
ok, good point.
― kenan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)
but man... those subway commercials.
I was thinking more along the lines of drinking/drugging himself to death.
― Ms Misery, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:02 (eighteen years ago)
That just makes me think of Swans songs for some reason.
― Ned Raggett, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:03 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, dude's movie/sitcom cameos are usually mad weak but "The Critic" alone puts Lovitz in probably the 80th percentile for post-SNL careers.
― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:04 (eighteen years ago)
Season 15: 1989-1990 Starring: # Dana Carvey # Nora Dunn # Phil Hartman # Jan Hooks # Victoria Jackson # Jon Lovitz # Dennis Miller # Mike Myers # Kevin Nealon
― ghost rider, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)
also... not to sound too mercenary, but for a working actor to actually have a commercial campaign like that is a big deal.
― s1ocki, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)
Does Jon seem dissatisfied to you? I think it's funny that he puts no effort into those Subway commercials. He's doing the "actor" character voice with no rhyme reason to it. Maybe he's supposed to be the stoned cameo on Friends, I don't know. "Eat fresh!" Must've been an easy paycheck.
― dean ge, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:05 (eighteen years ago)
oh man... I miss "The Critic."
ok ok you guys are right. It just sounds to me like Lovitz trying to kick anyone's ass is an act of horrible frustration. And not even with the ass-kickee.
― kenan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:07 (eighteen years ago)
kenan you are the only person on the planet in the last five, maybe ten years who has expressed something approaching empathy for andy dick getting his ass kicked. bravo.

i saw an interview with lovitz once where he talked about hartman, who seemed to have been a big brother/mentor type to him. he was clearly devastated by his death.

also trolls craigslist for sex! now THAT'S success!
Andy Dick gave Phil's wife cocaine after she had been sober for 10 years. This is unconfirmed. Also, this happened many months before she shot Phil? And Lovitz blames Andy Dick? That's a little assholey, too.

Kenan, I think the part of the story you're missing is that Lovitz didn't just go kick Dick's ass (heh) because of that rumor, he did it because Dick had the bad taste (heh heh) to joke about putting a "Hartman death hex" on him.

he did it because Dick had the bad taste (heh heh) to joke about putting a "Hartman death hex" on him.
which was tasteless, sure, but he also felt unfairly blamed for... Phil Hartman's death? He can't be blamed for that! That's ridiculous.
― kenan, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:18 (eighteen years ago)
Dick apparently got Hartman's wife off the wagon, and off the wagon led to her killing Phil Harman.
Your friend gets murdered, goof comes up to you and says "You're next" and then asks you to be in his movie, nothing wrong with fighting back.

― Ms Misery, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:20 (eighteen years ago)
Kenan, you are seriously broken. Regardless of the rumors, telling someone that you're putting a death hex on them named after their murdered best friend pretty much guarantees that you need your ass beaten to a bloody pulp. This is not rocket science, budget fake-Tuomas.
The funniest thing about this is that I think Andy Dick is maybe one of five people that Jon Lovitz could successfully beat up.
― HI DERE, Thursday, 19 July 2007 14:21 (eighteen years ago)

Rat Race is terrible.
SPOILER ALERT - it ends with the entire cast dancing at a Smash Mouth concert, with the band playing "All Star" over the closing credits while Cuba Gooding Jr. breakdances.
― n/a, Thursday, 19 July 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)
i don't remember any specific element of the plot besides the smashmouth concert and lovitz driving hitler's car

― Alex in Baltimore, Thursday, 19 July 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)
On a highway location, while traffic was clearing, the motorists would rubberneck to see who the star was. One day, Cuba Gooding Jr. decided to "moon" the motorists driving by.
― n/a, Thursday, 19 July 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)
Ha ha - This is the first feature film ever to co-star African-American Academy Award winners (Whoopi Goldberg and Cuba Gooding Jr.). !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and i kinda liked him on that less than perfect show, too.

Escaping the Rat Race can have a number of different meanings:
* A description of the movement, of either the Home or Work Location, of previously City Dwellers or Workers to more rural locations, possibly beyond the "urban growth boundary". * Retirement in general or no longer needing / having to work. * Moving from a high pressure job to a less intense role either at a different company or within the same company at an alternative location or department. * Changing to a different job that does not involve working 9 to 5 and a long commute. * Working from home. * Becoming financially independent from an employer. * Becoming a hobo or hippie.
― El Tomboto, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:00 (eighteen years ago)
LET ME CLARIFY A FEW THINGS FOR YOU GUYS:
JON LOVITZ = FUNNY (SEE: THE CRITIC) ANDY DICK = "FUNNY" (ANNOYING) RAT RACE = AMAZING MR. BEAN IN RAT RACE = FOREIGN = RETARDED, FOR ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES KEVIN NEALON = FUNNY (SEE: WEEDS) PHIL HARTMAN = FUNNIEST OF EVERYTHING MENTIONED (SEE: THE SIMPSONS)
― max, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:09 (eighteen years ago)
"All Star" wasn't in "Magnolia" or "The Hours" so it wasn't in every shitty movie of the past 10 years.
(I have no idea if it was in "Boat Trip" or not.)
― HI DERE, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:21 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure "Magnolia" used "Steal My Sunshine".
― HI DERE, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)
i would've liked magnolia A++ 100% better if they all sang steal my sunshine at the camera instead of that aimee mann song. and also if brett favre showed up, in hitler's car.

by the way --
Laugh Factory owner Jamie Masada, who witnessed the assault, said, "Jon picked Andy up by the head and smashed him into the bar four or five times, and blood started pouring out of his nose."
I think this means "slammed his head into the bar" but if he really grabbed his head and fully lifted him off the ground that wld be pretty rad
― dmr, Thursday, 19 July 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)

Log Lady: Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Yet there are those who open many eyes. Eyes are the mirror of the soul, someone has said. So we look closely at the eyes to see the nature of the soul. Sometimes when we see the eyes - those horrible times when we see the eyes, eyes that ... that have no soul - then we know a darkness, then we wonder: where is the beauty? There is none if the eyes are soulless.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Actor and comedian Andy Dick has been charged with two felony counts of sexual abuse in West Virginia.
Dick was arraigned this afternoon in Cabell County Magistrate Court. Court documents say Dick is accused of grabbing a bouncer's crotch earlier in the morning at the Rum Runners bar in Huntington. Magistrate Patty Verbage Spence set bail at $60,000.
Spence set a Feb. 2 preliminary hearing date for the 44-year-old Dick, who was in Huntington to perform at the Funny Bone Comedy Club. Funny Bone managing partner Tom Schaefer says Dick is "absolutely still on the schedule for today and Sunday" and says he planned to post Dick's bail.
A telephone message left at the office of Dick's manager, Michael Green, was not immediately returned Saturday.

I've been watching NewsRadio, and it's hard to forget that there was a time when he was funny and not a complete fucking mess. I'd just checked his Wikipedia page the other day which said he'd been sober for a year. Guessing that's over.
Side note: Two of the three blurbs on the back cover of Truth In Comedy, iO's improv manual which has apparently been reprinted for years without any modifications, are from Chris Farley and Andy Dick. Not exactly the best advertisement.

Nothing wrong with Farley. It's just seems problematic that two of the three comedians (the third being Andy Richter) blurbing the book (and, by extension, the theaters) have extensive drug/alcohol problems.
