Things'll get better. It's just a bad patch.

electric sound of jim, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's happened before, people will take a chill pill, ally's ass will emerge as the biggest thing thisboard has ever seen and hanle y wills tp making sense

Queen G, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i think that certain threads are great and some are just bizarre and i think that this place goes thru times of growth , or maybe its just shit,

anthony, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

it's always good! i read it every time i get on a computer (ie most days) even if there's nuthin i'd wanna "contribute" to...even the crappy stuff is interesting to me...admittedly i am not a real representative consumer

duane, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It lives and thrives. Down the dumper, never!

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 28 February 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Ah Ned, the eternal optimist! But alas, I did not enjoy the boards today.

It looks as if the flaws inherent in the low security level here (at greenspun) are beginning to show. Instead of being just an ugly blot on the community that people can shake their heads at and then ignore out of boredom, a 'problem' here has more freedom to poison and warp the whole process. It's awfully hard to maintain the decorum of 'real life' in an online community unless the participants are *held* to some immutable facsimle of an identity. Some will undoubtedly argue that is the great thing about online discussions - that new freedom, unpredictability, rawness, fire, blah blah blah etc., but I don't get the sense that *that* is what most here are after. There's a lot of fun here and a lot of intelligent debate, but most importantly (in the survival sense), there has been an awful lot of trust and respect. When individuals flaunt the conventions and treat the place as their personal playground, they weaken the established bonds and poison the group mentality. It's a bit of a tight spot, as it seems that some people will just never, ever get over themselves and defer to the larger intended purpose of a place.

Kim, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

me fence is back up

a-33, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DG has been understandably quiet on this issue. A good mood conducive to amiable aimless tosh will return.

Alan T, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

yes. but ilm is in good form at the moment! plenty of dancehall, jazz and rave questions!

i have to admit i don't like the aggressive tone of many of the recent threads, but thats not to say they're wrong or anything, they're just something i'm can't really relate to, but other people seem to enjoy them, so...

gareth, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think it's okay. It gets a little heated every couple of months. I just avoid the big old arguement threads. And it's Friday today, which is the best day of the week, and a new month, and...

jel --, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Kim Dimbitch would like us to be the Vatican. Pompous and hypocritical - the Democrat Party is looking for people like you.

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

hee hee! tom, we should come back to this thread at 5pm and i think you'll have your answer!

gareth, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe starting this thread was a bad idea.

One of the things I love about ILE is the LUSENET technology, and specifically the way it allows you just to keep away from certain threads if you can see they're boring or aggressive. No, ILE has not gone down the dumper.

N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think Gareth's got the hang of how I work. Anyway this is literally only a 15-minute teabreak and I'm just popping my head round the door. Won't be back for awhile (i.e. weeks - busy month ahead and dramatic developments in personal life heh heh) but I'll sure you'll manage without me. Bye for now!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe starting this thread was a bad idea.

like, duh! maybe me and you should have a fight too nick, like real men and that, you, um, er, nasty man!

gareth, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nick yes it was a bad idea starting the thread but I was interested, and besides I wanted to use the phrase "down the dumper" after being reminded of it by popjustice.

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think what Kim's saying is very sensible BTW.

Tom, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

and no, it's not gone down the dumper at all. Sorry for my part in what went on yesterday, you'll all be pleased to know that a most pleasant evening last night in the company of good friends, Mary Lorson and Tanya Donnelly put me in a very good mood indeed. And I intend to keep it that way.

chris, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

i'm very definitely with Tom re. what Kim said.

katie, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

curse of ILx - i give wyrd to co cycling ala k-rad - it starts hail- stoening - rock on!

a-33, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

finally agree with kim

a-33 ^U-turn^, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

its ahl too london fer me nooadaze

B.F.N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yeah, I love any excuse to say "down the dumper".

But I don't think ILE has. It goes through good periods and bad ones, it's pretty cyclical.

Nicole, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"DG has been understandably quiet on this issue."
Well, I dunno, the board seems the same as ever to me apart from a certain poster who wishes to antagonise everyone and do his best to wreck ILE. Sadly, it doesn't seem I can do anything about that.

DG, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

oh i don't know, i think Graham has been pretty well behaved actually

gareth, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I think he was talking about Nicole.

N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

He's not talking about me?

Dan Perry, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Nothing can deter me from my goal of destroying ILE.

And it's all because !I don't give a fuck about this world!.

Nicole, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hi DG!

Marcello Carlin, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hello you!

DG, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How many questions like this are there?

I must confess THIS time I actually noticed myself becoming disinterested in ILE but nonetheless I'm not too worried, there's a thread like this every month or so.

Ronan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I don't know if I'm just thin-skinned these days, but I'm just tired of trying to put forward an idea for discussion and having it dismissed in a one or two line post or ignored completely. There seems to be less willingness to disagree in an interesting way. Maybe familiarity has bred contempt. Maybe people don't want to bother engaging in conversations with people they for whom they don't even bother to pretend to respect any more. It's fine when arguments become passionate or heated if there's some substance to them, but if it's all just "you would think that, you asshole"-type responses then the whole thing is just depressing. I'm sure spring will change things.

fritz, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

*sigh*... The old saying "if you can't say something nice then don't say anything" really holds here... I'm really dying to point out a perhaps obvious fact about a certain poster, but I refuse to do so. I also realize that saying "I'm thinking something about someone but I'm not gonna say who or what" is pointless and stupid. But it really would be nice if everyone would be nice, no? Of course disagreements will always occur, but why, for the love of god why, would anyone deliberately try to stir things up over and over again? Who would want to bring such darkness into their lives and into others? Sheesh, that sounds like Gale. But I won't take it back.

Sean, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

...The Shadow Knows!

Sterling Clover, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Marcello is so unfocused in his bile-spewing that it doesn't bother me most of the time, but his hounding of Q and Gale was really ugly.

It's the casual hipper-than-thou contempt for the less-trendy tossed around by the cool kids that make it feel like a high school cafeteria.

fritz, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

But Gale and Q are the coolest ppl. on the board, nearly! I think the 'cello is jealo(us).

Sterling Clover, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

where is Dave Q anyhow?

gareth, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave Q = Gale = Marcello = D**mp****l! There, my ridiculous and unsupportable theory.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, i'm iron man

gareth, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I've seen Dave Q and I've seen Marcello, so I can confirm they aren't the same person.

DG, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Hurrah! Now for evidence of the rest, which is where I guess Mark S's brave expedition today will lead.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

no, i'm iron man

This is a Butthole Surfers cover of 'Never Understand', no? But why?

N., Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Today? Holdja horses nedster it's not till the tenth! DP and I are both really excited abt it! (Really!! It was definitely the upside of ILE yesterday... ) Did anyone evah investigate Gale's Abuse Support Group board? It froze up my computer (yeah, like everything else on the interweb except greenspun).

mark s, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

DP and I are both really excited abt it! Really!!

I believe you.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

"Marcello...his hounding of Q and Gale was really ugly." - I've seen the Gale bashing but could someone point me to where he went after dave...

kevin enas, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It'd be great if there was a pub called the Dumper.

jel --, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

'Twas Dave Q. who attacked Marcello first, actually.

I saw it, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dave Q went after me first though.

Robin Carmody, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

this thread is all about ther evivial of butt mucous - well fuck you all, i'm out of here, and i'll never shit my filth upon your darkened doorsteps again. i can tell when my anal weeping is not wanted.

Queen G, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

jesus wept

ethan, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Yes, but he didn't weep anally I hope;)

Norman Phay, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Tell you what, Kim speaks wisdom, so do Sean and fritz le chat, and Marcello needs to catch a whupping by a whole angry gang of transsexual puerto ricans.....what

Ramosi, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The time we spent fuckin' has now been spent bitchin'...

crapola, Friday, 1 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Maybe the most underrated Green Velvet song.

Ian, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

It's all good with Green Velvet.

Ronan, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

In the spirit of having And in every bar name it should be Butt Mucious & The Dumper.

Mr Noodles, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I haven't been to ILE in a while. What the hell is this thread about?

Frank Kogan, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

There was some angst here recently. Long story! Anyway, hiya again Frank.

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well, jeez, put it on display. Can there ever be too much angst?

Frank Kogan, Saturday, 2 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

.yes.

gareth, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

All right, I did some searching through the back catalogue (just finished reading Kate's I Love Xmas thread, among many others), and my previous post now comes across as flippant, ignorant, stupid. But to answer Tom's question, no ILE is not going down the dumper at all, in fact I think it's a triumph. Another thread I looked at was Gale's one about inviting a needy stranger for dinner, and I saw all the legitimate fears people expressed about actually doing so. Well, ILE's got a wide open door, anyone can crash the party, and the flip- outs and fuckups are allowed to happen. And from what I can see, ILE in general can handle it, and is intellectually stronger for having to take it on. I get plenty mad reading the board, sometimes, mainly because I want it to do something for me that it isn't doing yet (if anyone remembers that Derrida thread from last I-don't-remember-when you can see my frustration) and that nothing else in my life is doing either, I want it to create a genuine intellectual community and ILE just doesn't push its collective mind far enough. So I'm not in simple "Let's congratulate ILE" mode. But ILE is much more alive and searching than any other place I know of at the moment, and that's because it doesn't have the deadbolts on.

Frank Kogan, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Screaming fucking bloody mess.

Frank Kogan, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Green Velvet guy makes me want to jump out the window the second I hear his voice. But the answering-machine song is classic.

Frank Kogan, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

A kung-fu street fight can only work if both parties stick to the rules.

Bruce Lee, Sunday, 3 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-four years ago)

one year passes...
What with the current Pinefox-inspired bout of ILX nostalgia, the disappearance of several high-profile posters and a few comments made by Nicole among others... revive!

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:27 (twenty-two years ago)

It hasn't really gone down the dumper per se...
I'd say it's more just a case of me not getting much out of it lately. I've lost interest in a lot of things lately though.

Nicole (Nicole), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:32 (twenty-two years ago)

The London pub steering mob have been on ILx sabbatical and are now gallivanting in France I think. I fully expect normal service to resume next week.

Jerry the Nipper (Jerrynipper), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:33 (twenty-two years ago)

The problem: too much ILX NYC.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

over the last month

ile: 31/100 uk/eire based
ilm: 21/100 uk/eire based

dude, where did all the brits go?

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:38 (twenty-two years ago)

this many posts in and I'm still not to blame?

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread not started by jess SHOCKAH!

I blame hstencil.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I blame hstencil (Damn!)

Matt (Matt), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:44 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh* at this point, if I have to ask y'all to blame me...

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:47 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, you were tangentially to blame in my post, what are you talking about? Did you leave NYC suddenly in the night yesterday?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

I may live here, Ally, but I'll never be from here.

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Ohhh, such tragic and touching and Catcher in the Rye teen angst you have for us, hstencil.

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:51 (twenty-two years ago)

just doin' my job, Ally.

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:52 (twenty-two years ago)

*wipes a tear*

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i think you'll find the correlation between ILE's decline and my increase in posting to be more than just coincidence

(self-deprecation - classic or dud?)

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:54 (twenty-two years ago)

No no no... it's not you, Blueski, it's me!

(rivary + self-deprecation = I WIN!!)

Aaron W (Aaron W), Thursday, 24 April 2003 12:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Fuck both of you. Insults directed at others always win.

(I learned it from you, Ally, I LEARNED IT FROM YOU!)

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:02 (twenty-two years ago)

EVerything's Ally's fault cuz she's number one on the USERS page!!! (*sigh, Will I ever be number one??)

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you're number one in my heart, Sarah.

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:05 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think there's anough self deprecation on the boards.

Obviously I'm very sorry and I'll try harder.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:06 (twenty-two years ago)

*sigh* hstencil, you can never insult anyone as well as I can, ok? Why? Because I am a girl and say it in a high pitched, breathy voice. Do you understand now?

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it's somewhat payback time for the long domination of London-centric in-jokes and offboard/onboard confusion. Now that the NYC users have surpassed the London users, we're experiencing the same sort of "huh?" that the rest of the board was probably experiencing for a long time!

kate, Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

ooh i like it!

gareth (gareth), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

hi kate!

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:17 (twenty-two years ago)

tell me how you like it!

Ally (mlescaut), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:25 (twenty-two years ago)

is it is it wicked?

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:31 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you mean, Sarah's number one in your heart?

rosemary (rosemary), Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:57 (twenty-two years ago)

everyone's number one in my heart, rosemary. Heart and loins, well that's another matter.

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 13:58 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil's loins - c/d?

for the record, I left nyc long before I made post number one here.

martin mushrush (mushrush), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's okay, I'm here now.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, me too. Between us, the board is saved! :-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Hurrah for jel and Ned, the boards saviors!

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I like to think my posts have always resonated with the same low level of quality.

jel -- (jel), Thursday, 24 April 2003 14:46 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil, What kinda beef does yer loins got wid me?

Sarah McLUsky (coco), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

AVOID THE BEEFY LOINS OF HSTENCIL

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Unless served with a hearty BBQ sauce.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:56 (twenty-two years ago)

BBQ=Boy's Best Quality

buttch (Oops), Thursday, 24 April 2003 15:58 (twenty-two years ago)

no beef w/ya, Sarah. Just that I've made a promise to rosemary.

(in all actuality my loins prolly do go well with bbq sauce, but then again almost everything else goes well with my loins, too)

hstencil, Thursday, 24 April 2003 16:00 (twenty-two years ago)

ron (ron), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 07:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you think you will be posting to ILX in say, three years time? I know I Will!

Antmusic78 (Antmusic78), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 07:59 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope not!

ron (ron), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll see you there, ohronny, at the ILE!

Antmusic78 (Antmusic78), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:03 (twenty-two years ago)

If aliens found ILX, what would they think/do/say?

Antmusic78 (Antmusic78), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:08 (twenty-two years ago)

EARTHLINGS-S/D, C/D?

Emilymv (Emilymv), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:13 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it has to do with volume/popularity. More people posting more often. Encourages "witty" one liners, discourages long thought out posts. Even on threads with heated arguments, things move so fast that by the time you write out a response there have been 50 x-posts, and the last 20 are "funny" pictures. Oh well. Really, I just wish Ramosi were back.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 08:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Adapt or die, bnw! Just like the bugs and the little fishies of the sea.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:07 (twenty-two years ago)

oh, no, we must lose those 'witty' one liners, they spoil all the fun. maybe there shd be an 'ilx elite' service for veterans who are fatigued by all the funny stuff.

Henry K M (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:10 (twenty-two years ago)

You've just come up with the worst idea in the history of culture.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:18 (twenty-two years ago)

oh i didn't sodding mean it!

but quite an acheivement nonetheless.

enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I know - I'm quite in awe.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

How about ILX Classic? Hah!

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't think I have ever posted anything longer then a couple lines. You revived the friggin' thread, Hand. Troublemaker.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it me, or is ILE extra specially British this morning?

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:36 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmmm, surely it's the middle of the nite yonder. or maybe us posters all work in bush's crack secret service team.

enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Usually there's some rogue Left Coasters still limping to bed at this point...

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:39 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm going to break my distance from threads like this ONCE to say: you get the ILX you deserve. And if that makes you go boo-hoo, look in the fucking mirror.

suzy (suzy), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I like it when ILE goes all weirdly British and starts conducting threads in the incomprehensible (to outsiders. probably.) code of bus route numbers!

Citizen Kate (kate), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:42 (twenty-two years ago)

speak of anti-macassars

enrique (Enrique), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Suzy: That's not entirely fair. (I mean, I used to say that same thing back in the day: want a "smart" thread? Go start one!) But something like popularity, which is out of our grasp, does have an effect.

bnw (bnw), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:44 (twenty-two years ago)

i think i've jumped the shark this last fortnight

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

We deserve Momus?

Markelby (Mark C), Tuesday, 18 November 2003 12:22 (twenty-two years ago)

what does "jumped the shark" mean?

ILE is particularly good today and has been pretty good for the last few weeks.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:06 (twenty-two years ago)

what would your list of *ideal* ILE threads look like?
(er, maybe that needs a thread....)

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, but this time last year looks a lot more appealing.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, but this time last year looks a lot more appealing.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(first link a fuck up)

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:22 (twenty-two years ago)

hmmm, actually they are pretty comparable; except the food threads have died but it wasn't for the lack of them being started. there is too much silly "how/when/where would you/not f*ck subject/object/creature" threads. take those out and it's pretty much the same stuff.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it isn't.

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 09:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow - there were no more posts today. Are we giving ILE the silent treatment for having gone down the dumper?

N. (nickdastoor), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

No, it was just down for a while. But we thrive.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 23 December 2003 22:11 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm pretty sure that every aspect of life has gone down the dumper, so I don't see why ILE would be any different, you all know.

NA (Nick A.), Wednesday, 24 December 2003 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

ron (ron), Thursday, 25 December 2003 00:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Seriously, did no one see the irony in reviving a thread started almost two years ago to complain about ILX going downhill lately?

NA (Nick A.), Thursday, 25 December 2003 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

no, you did, didn't you?

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 25 December 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but 2001 threads are all peeps like the Pinefox going "I have just heard of an invention called the Motor Car. Apparently it allows people to travel without the propulsion of horses. I'm not sure I care for it."

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:08 (nineteen years ago)

does it takes five years to cover most subjects? maybe!

possible combination of this and the swift popularity of regionalist balkanisation (motivated by range of factors).

just quite surprised by how steep the drop is after four fairly consistent years.

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:09 (nineteen years ago)

I can't remember what happened when now. Wasn't this worse in August with daily poxyfoolin' or was that more recent?

;_; (blueski), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:11 (nineteen years ago)

also newer seperatist boards have been created, so some subjects aren't even covered anymore on ILE. or is your report for all ilx?

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 19 October 2006 13:13 (nineteen years ago)

on both ILE and ILM the days of 1000 threads in one month have been over for a long time now. predictably i don't think this has as much to do with over-zealous moderation as anything else.

but do deleted threads still count in the # of 'questions asked' listed per month?

honest question - as a current poster, why should i care if former posters have left ILX because it sucks now/is too in-jokey/is full of meanies? thats what people do when they stop enjoying something, or when something changes in a way they don't like. im not saying that stalky stuff is ok, but i dont understand the endless hand-wringing over these fantastic posters that have left the board, and i think it silently reinforces the whole golden days of ILX dichotomy that makes new/newer posters feel unwanted and unimportant.

didnt want to clutter up the meta-bitchiness thread with this, so i thought id put it here

uh shit-ton of xposts in there btw

John Justen, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

I don't think you should care that people have left, JJ, but it's worth thinking about why they go. Like if it was a club night you were running, and everybody left because they were sick of the venue and the people who went and the music, that's one thing and, yeh, fuck 'em. If they leave because it's nothing but the same Boredoms track for six hours straight and there's always a huge punch up, with glasses and CSS flying everywhere, that's another thing.

Not saying ILX is either, mind.

stet, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:10 (seventeen years ago)

the point isn't that the site is losing people, which is clearly not the case, but that the people here now are somehow less important/desirable than those people who have gone, cf. the pinefox's sadsack list of his friends who aren't here anymore.

the running theme is that lots of people are sad that ilx isn't exactly how they would choose it to be (or romantically remember it being) and it's tired old bullshit.

Roberto Spiralli, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

Oh my gosh I think I got some CSS in my eye!

Abbott, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

The general number of threads/posts trend is downwards, but it has been since 2004. There are ppl like pinefox who are harking back to some sort of halycon ILX days, but I don't think that's at all what's driving Pash or this no-meta thing -- it's about posters who are here.

stet, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)

i get your analogy, but the problem is that we aren't dealing with a big empty club, or a diminishing membership. despite the people leaving, ILX is bigger than ever, AFAIK. so if people are upset about people leaving ILX, this implies that it isn't because of a quantitative problem, it has to be a qualitative one. you rarely see people talking about how lots of posters are leaving in droves, but ive seen a lot of people saying that a lot of great or good posters have left because of the current uncivil/unreadable/lacking in legit discourse environment. which begs the question - what kind of posters are the rest of us that enjoy ILX the way it is, in the eyes of its current detractors?

John Justen, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

max, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

it is a qualitative problem, because people are leaving of their own accord and stating so e.g. not because of real-life issues like kids, jobs, or a new pill that makes them not have to use ILX any more; they're leaving because the ad hominem shit about them is making it untenable to post any longer from their perspective. I don't care whether those posters have been here for seven years or three months (though I'm not as likely to notice their disappearance in the latter case, I suppose), I care that swaths of ILX (outside of the regional threads, the MOLLIFY chat thread, or other rolling cliques) have essentially become hostile territory for a number of people and that the exit count continues to rise.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:28 (seventeen years ago)

the whole argument being made about "if you say it here it's fair game" is being made with this really lovely assumption that's been evolving over time that anything/everything is "fair game" for something at all - you don't call something "fair game" if you mean fodder for earnest conversation, you mean "fair game" for fucking with the person who said it.

True, there were a bit more average posts per month in 2004/2005 (a little above 100,000), but I'd say the general trend hasn't been declining or increasing in the past few years, just undulating around 90,000 or so.

Z S, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:31 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, the "great" and "good" posters language isn't at all helpful as it does imply that everyone left is shitty and crap, and I don't like that, although there are posters I personally miss. Part of what's behind it, I suspect, is that ILX used to have lots of co-existing cliques, but they've broken down a bit and some posters' friends have left.

This could be my own rose-tinted specs, perhaps people were always digging on threads that wouldn't usually interest them for lulz -- there was a time last year when even Aeon Flux was getting comedy raids -- but It feels to me that ILX is not as good as it was at live and let live.

Or just less and less appealing. I understand that the neighborhood is always going to change and I'm totally fine with the new kids doin' their thing, whatever that is, but if there's nowhere where it's either feasible or comfortable to do mine, I may just move on, you know?

i never found this board to be all that hostile.

sometimes i got smacked down by ppl that are smarter than me, but it was probably good, toughens u up a bit.

i think a lot of the sense that "things aren't how they used to be" is more just that so much of the stuff that's worth discussing and worth saying has been used up....all the great themes have been turned into theme parks...there's a thread on ILM for almost anything you could possibly think about music.....all that's left to do is just, you know, either leave or stick around and continue to TALK HARD

JJ: What happened with you is how it should work, ideally. Not you get a thread all about you on a sub-board posting everything you've ever done for mocking, posters looking for real-life shit about you, turning up on your Flickr and all the other stuff Pash mentions, all because yr "boring" to them about music.

stet, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:40 (seventeen years ago)

I don't give a shit about the history here.
I give a shit about the fact that last week I nearly quit the boards myself because I didn't want to be a "mod" where my job consisted mainly of explaining myself to the likes of rude shit-stirring motherfuckers who take perverse enjoyment in getting other posters to recuse themselves from the board on a permanent basis

There's a problem here in that all the egregious examples of what Pash is talking about are all DELETED so we can't exactly hold them up to eveyone and point and say "this, this can fuck right off, understand?" no teaching without a visual aid these days

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:41 (seventeen years ago)

My experience exactly, and I'm sure that's true with most others. But yeah, like Stet said, in retrospect a lot of the appeal of ILX is that it's really, really difficult to garner praise for anything you say.

i mean who are we talking about? tynan? louis, who shared all the personal info with us himself? suzy, whose meta thread was quickly deleted? alex in nyc, whose meta thread was mostly people talking about how much they liked him (and the negative comments on which were comments that had been made to his "face" in "public" before)? pash's flickr, which resulted in the immediate banning of heave without protest?

max, Wednesday, 21 May 2008 17:47 (seventeen years ago)

the public perception of the alex in NYC thread is woefully innaccurate, so now you have a bunch of people that never read the thread assuming that it was a long diatribe about how alex is a terrible parent

fair enough, I guess it's noble to feel a sense of duty to serve as a mod because you'd been asked to. but I think it's fair to say you're thought of as an A++ poster but controversial at best as a mod, and a lot of us would rather you quit or take a break from being a moderator than just up sticks and leave because being a mod is, I can only imagine, a pretty big pain in the ass.
