The exultant ones are boring, and the agonized ones far more fun.

Reminds me of the time in Grade 10 business class (definitely in the top 3 stupidest classes in my school experience) when we, on the last day, watched Wall Street, as to learn about business ethics, but we ran out of time and the class was dismissed only just as Charlie Sheen was about to get arrested.

mehlt, Sunday, 12 August 2007 17:30 (eighteen years ago)

Alright, maybe I lied, and we watched until he encountered the police, and was obviously about to get arrested, but still it's a funny scenario to think about.

There is no evidence that anyone leapt to their death because of the market crash, although several did shoot themselves. One man decided to end his misery by leaving his gas stove on and then taking a long nap. And then there was the guy who had a heart attack at his broker's office watching the dropping numbers on the ticker tape. The one person reported to jump from an upper floor of the Plaza Hotel in New York City, did so several days before the market tumbled. Will Rogers, the great humorist, picked up on it and included the "jumping out of windows" in his routine for a number of years, and so the legend.

Charlie - no, I don't think so. There's http://www.newseum.org/todaysfrontpages/?tfp_show_sort=yes but that's only today's and anyway, UK papers seem to have pulled out of it.

Alba, Friday, 10 October 2008 11:14 (seventeen years ago)

if i were a newspaper's website i'd have a page with links to every front page since my inception! it's ridiculous.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 10 October 2008 11:23 (seventeen years ago)

can you imagine how inky your fingers would get, scanning all those newspapers? i'd do it though. i enjoy tedious, undemanding work like that.

Tracer Hand, Friday, 10 October 2008 11:26 (seventeen years ago)

There are royalties issues. Photographers would want recompense.

Alba, Friday, 10 October 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

so do they get recompense for all the above pics from a year ago (and longer ago elsewhere obv) which are still live and linkable?

CharlieNo4, Friday, 10 October 2008 11:30 (seventeen years ago)

It's a bit of a shadowy area. I think, to be honest, a lot of those pics have gone up under agreements that probably don't allow them to be available in perpetuity. But the web's frontier country for intellectual property. It's all a bit hard to control and results in arguments between the various parties about digital-reuse clauses in contracts. Similar problems with text. Big chunks of pre-web newspaper archives have been pulled because fears of lawsuits by freelancers.

Just finished swinging on gigantic phone.

Matt DC, Friday, 10 October 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

the copy says, more or less:

Top bankers listen and respond to savers

Where would my money be safe?
What shall I do with my shares?
Ask the experts on the phone at 1pm.

so they're smiling because the newspaper is giving them a load of cash to placate its readers, presumably.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 10 October 2008 12:00 (seventeen years ago)

Big chunks of pre-web newspaper archives have been pulled because fears of lawsuits by freelancers.

i seem to remember ipc freelances and staffers threatening a walk-out in the early 2000s over online republishing of printed copy. can't remember what happened though.

A: I have never owned a share of stock in my life. I do not eat my own cooking. Funny thing about money. If I started to worry about my own profit and loss, I would be less concentrated on my customers’ well-being.

And I also have two children in college, so I don’t have any money to buy stocks.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Tuchman

Yerac, Wednesday, 14 August 2019 20:20 (six years ago)

"Tuchman's photo is widely recognized for its affiliation to market news. Tuchman has strong, emotional expressions of anguish, anticipation, desperation, and triumph which he says are genuine. His photo is often chosen for news about Wall Street particularly on days of market volatility. Some say that he resembles Albert Einstein and that this is what makes his photo intriguing...
Although he has been in the stock market business for 34 years, Tuchman says he has never owned stock and if he had to worry about his own profit and loss, he would not be able to concentrate on his customers' well-being."

i didn't see it behind the photobucket watermark!

but i like it :)

you should use imgur to post images! photobucket is an internet wasteland these days, bought out a dozen times and eventually sold to whatever company the agonized stock traders are mad about now

i wonder if they keep a watermark on it unless a certain amount of people view the original link or something? i swear, just a few minutes ago i scrolled up and it had a giant watermark plastered all over it and the underlying image was blurry

But guess what? Nobody gives a toot!😂 (Karl Malone), Friday, 28 February 2020 17:59 (five years ago)

anyway I was trying to let you off the hook
