W4LTER, Monday, 27 August 2007 06:01 (eighteen years ago)

Actor Owen Wilson was hospitalized after attempting suicide, sources tell the NATIONAL ENQUIRER and Star magazine exclusively.

Wilson was transported to St. John’s hospital in Santa Monica , Calif. on Sunday, August 26, by ambulance. Sources tell the ENQUIRER and Star that he sliced his left wrists and took an indeterminate amount of pills.

He was discovered by a family member who summoned help.

Police and an ambulance responded to a 911 call from Owen’s house around noon on Sunday.

His wrist was sutured and bandaged at the hospital.

The ENQUIRER and Star broke the story of Owen’s hospitalization earlier Sunday and revealed that he was being transferred from St. John’s after being stabilized. The publications learned that he was going to be detoxed.

Owen was brought in to St. John’s in very serious condition. Police were on the scene immediately as was a criminal defense attorney, believed to be working for Wilson. Some of Owen’s family was with him.

Wilson was stabilized at St. John’s.

More on this story as it develops…

“Owen Wilson has now been transferred from St. John’s to another Los Angeles area hospital. His brothers Andrew and Luke are with him.

“Andrew found him after the suicide attempt and called an ambulance. Both of Owen’s wrists were slashed superficially and Owen had taken an overdose of pills.

“Owen was found with a nearly empty bottle of pills next to him. He was at his house in Santa Monica.”

Hmm, I dunno. It seems like people get pretty worked up over celebrities' deaths; more so then say, some guy who lives down the street from you and you know by sight but never talk to.

Ultimately, why should he care if his suicide attempt is public knowledge? People need to start being human.

dell, Monday, 27 August 2007 21:53 (eighteen years ago)

although you could also die from a drug overdose. I still think it's bullshit, if "lol we'll just call it a suicide!" was a for-real option we wouldn't see so many starlets hospitalized for "exhaustion".

jessie monster, Monday, 27 August 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

there is also absolutely no background to the idea that wilson is much of a drug user at all. he's well known as an alcoholic but i've never heard him referenced as doing anything harder than weed. and this shit's usually everwhere, secretly, about these pplz.

i think that pplz would just rather think of him as a party bro than as a sad dude which is why rumors like that get started.

the schef (adam schefter ha ha), Monday, 27 August 2007 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

could very well be.

"lol we'll just call it a suicide!" was a for-real option we wouldn't see so many starlets hospitalized for "exhaustion".

"exhaustion" is usually code for a cokehead/drunk going into rehab. Not an OD.

Ms Misery, Monday, 27 August 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

jessie monster, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

i do not read defamer. But shit like that spreads like wildfire.

kenan, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

In the recent past I can only think of such a case with Amy Winehouse. Which seemed more of an accidental OD rather than deliberate. You could certainly argue that the drug lifestyle is a slow form of suicide but when Lindsay Lohan is being put in the hospital for exhaustion I don't think anyone believes there was a suicide attempt.

Ms Misery, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

I dunno if I'm sure what you're getting at? My point was just that "exhaustion" is usually the go-to OD cover up (I would call any overdose accidental, an intentional overdose IS a suicide attempt), not "suicide attempt". I'm pretty sure it received some record-breaking use by Lohan's people.

jessie monster, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

I was disagreeing with you that exhaustion was the go-to coverup. That's all.

Ms Misery, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

sorry to hear it, but your juxtaposition of getting killed by a bear and no homo reminded me of this old onion piece:

Black Bear Attacks, Rapes Zookeeper

Here's a little dog-bites-man tale we couldn't resist! Except replace "dog" with "850-pound black bear"! And "bites" with "anally violate"!

Yes, last Saturday a zookeeper at the Metropolitan Zoo had "claws" for alarm when he was attacked and raped by the same black bear he had raised from a cub! Geez, talk about gratitude!

"It was horrible, just horrible," sobbed an eyewitness. Guess she sure got an eyeful!

The bear, named "Barry," attacked zookeeper Chris Byrne as Byrne entered the cage to give him dinner. Barry lunged at his throat, goring him with his huge claws and razor-sharp teeth. Some of the claw marks were three-quarters of an inch deep. Ouch!

Then, astonished onlookers could "bearly" believe what happened next--Barry began to brutally rape zookeeper Byrne!

Frantic zookeepers rushed for rifles as others tried to divert the bear. But there was no stopping Barry! This bear kept "bearing down," and Byrne just had to grin and "bear" it! Maybe Barry was mistaking him for his "honey"! Byrne was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. A full quart of bear semen was extracted from his ruptured chest cavity. And that's no small Boo-Boo!

Barry's 27-inch phallus, armed with guard hairs as sharp as red-hot needles, shot through Byrne' rectum, shattered his lower spine and skewered his colon, causing his entire lower torso to "cave" in! Yikes! Bet that wasn't the type of "cave" you had in mind when you took up zookeeping, Mr. Byrne!

And can you imagine Byrne' surprise when Barry's putrid ursine semen flooded his ruptured chest cavity? (By the way, Mr. Byrne, whatever cologne you've been wearing, where can the public get some?)

Finally, zookeeper Eric Pulliam shot Barry with a tranquilizer gun and pulled Byrne from the cage. The unconscious bear was later destroyed. Hey, this "Yogi" made a major "Boo-Boo"!

"I have worked with dangerous animals before," zoo director Kate Donegal said. "But never have I seen any animal sexually assault a human being." "Barry"? Try "Scary"!

Meanwhile, Byrne was pronounced dead at an area hospital--but at least he died grinning and bearing it! No doubt, this episode gives new meaning to the term, "Do not feed the bears!"

Well yes: people would be way quicker to accept an attempted-suicide narrative if the star involved were a major comedian (bonus points if overweight), a wild-and-reckless starlet, or a craggy, intense-looking actor (like a Nolte or Busey or something), so there's some kind of shock when it's a seemingly well-adjusted, solidly established, mid-level star (whose roles tend to be pretty businesslike, and aren't dredging up any kind of intense personal emotion that would make us think of him as having a turbulent inner life) --

-- i.e., it's like just a few steps away from if you heard Ben Stiller attempted suicide, which you won't, which is one of about 10,000 reasons why watching Permanent Midnight in retrospect is really, really hilarious.

(xpost - I think "exhaustion" covers a wide range of stuff, right down to what, in some cases, probably verges on public understanding of "exhaustion," except that in this case it means "star is just generally too fucked up on drugs/alcohol/emotionally to work or be seen right now, but we can't just say 'she's, umm, in the bathroom for the next two weeks,' so let's just say she's suffering from 'exhaustion' and needs a rest.")

nabisco, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

Ms Misery, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

Clearly we should just have a knifefight in the alley over the meaning of "exhaustion" in PR-speak.

jessie monster, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

I think I would prefer a knife-fight to most of the bitchiness on ILx. It's much more to the point and entertaining to boot. (although I don't think this issue is worth a knife-fight. We can save it for something else.)

Ms Misery, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

Alternately: name actors/actresses where if they were suddenly down with "exhaustion," you were 100% believe that they were genuinely overworked and needed bed-rest.

From ABC News "nicknamed "The Butterscotch Stallion" for his womanizing ways,"

I can't remember - did he get the Butterscotch name from the two-hour rimjob story, or did it exist before that?

milo z, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Defamer gave it to him due to some article that called him a stallion??

LOCK THREAD.

jessie monster, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

i know this is a sensitive issue, and many people are polarized on the points, but why are we supposed to feel sorry for him again?

cutty, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

feeling sorry for people who (may) have attempted suicide is just the nice thing to do. you don't have to.

jessie monster, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

WHICH blond stud, nicknamed the "Butterscotch Stallion," has a perverse sexual bent? He recently picked up a girl at a wedding and the two went back to his hotel room. When the woman asked if he had a condom, the actor replied: "I don't want to have sex with you, but I do want to do something else" — and proceeded to lick her buttocks for "over two hours."

milo z, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

oh owen wilson's almost-RIP thread, you have hit that turning point.

jessie monster, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)

cutty, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)

Srsly I feel sorry for anyone who gets to where they seriously attempt suicide. It reminds me that full-on hell is never further away than our own skulls.

Jon Lewis, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

You can feel sorry for him because apart from some elderly people with painful and debilitating terminal diseases, most people who try to kill themselves are suffering from unpleasant illnesses like clinical depression or bipolar disorder or at least the kinds of dysfunctional personalities that you can consider a unfortunate affliction for a person to have to deal with.

nabisco, Monday, 27 August 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

defamer gave him that nickname like two years ago. I think it wasn't even the editors, some commenter e-mailed it in and they ran with it.

cutty, Monday, 27 August 2007 23:14 (eighteen years ago)

This is a losing provocation, Cutty. Suicide is bad. You point out that someone attempted suicide, and people will say "that's too bad" and "I hope he/she is okay." They'll say that if you say "my friend attempted suicide," even if they don't know your friend. Even if you made up the friend, they'll say that. And if it's someone a lot of people have chuckled at in movies and whose face they can picture, maybe you'll hear it a little more. Big surprise. This also works with cancer, MS, and more or less any major disease except for alcoholism. It's not a referendum on whose life is better: you feel bad for the people because having diseases and suffering severe depressions and being mortal are such basic, sucky things that nearly everyone in the world can agree to be half-decent to one another about them.

I'm all for having the sympathy-priorities thing when you're talking about, like, socio-political sympathies, in stuff where that's at issue, but when it's just some random guy with problems, there's no good argument against saying you hope he gets better.

I feel like I've seen the alcoholism thing in some stand-up routine, or something -- "the only disease you get yelled at for having." Plus drug addiction and minor personality disorders, but once you get into minor personality disorders everything gets really vexed and people can start saying "I'm not an asshole, I have a congenital behavioral syndrome." Whatever.

although i did read last year he was taking time out writing with... woody harrelson? and i think it said "in amsterdam". so that might have been a joke i guess.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 08:14 (eighteen years ago)

Is he going to do any more writing, I wonder, because his scripts are very good, and he says he's meeting up with Woody Harrelson in the next few days. 'We're going to write for a couple of weeks in Europe.'

What about? 'Well, there's not been so much discussion about what we're going to write, there's been a little more thought into where the writing's going to take place. Some people would say you should go write some place where there's not a lot of distractions, but we're going the other way. Anybody can do that! We're thinking of Amsterdam. Let's prove that we really are disciplined! Everyone's betting against us, but we're confident ...' And he twinkles like a man who doesn't know what worry means.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 08:16 (eighteen years ago)

cutty, c'mon. Emotional pain is often more torturous than physical pain. Aspirin will not make a grieving heart feel better.

Uh, how can you say physical pain is easier to cure than emotional pain? It all depends, really.

I'm not completely with Cutty on this but I can understand up to a point. I do find it sad that he tried to commit suicide, but at the end of the day it doesn't do him much good and why should I lose sleep over this? It alters my perception of him, I guess.

I feel far more if I found out if an ILXor (or anyone else I know, even if it's vaguely) is in deep pain. In a way I find it sad that so many people will say:"Oh crap, Owen's depressed." but are oblivious to, say, their neighbours' state of mind.

nathalie, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 09:03 (eighteen years ago)

I said "often", so not in all cases, obviously. What I mean is that physical pain is more tangible, and in most instances there is some sort of analgesic that one can take. However, in the case of emotional pain, it's not something that is as easy to pin down as nerve endings being irritated or whatever. Hence psychology and psychiatry still being in their infancy, in comparison to medical science dealing with the physical body. One may take psychoactive substances ranging from alcohol to anti-depressants in an attempt to "cure" emotional pain, but as most of us know, it doesn't seem to work as neatly or as reliably as does taking a tylenol for a headache.

...It alters my perception of him, I guess.
It alters my perception of him as well, and humanizes him, and reminds me that that having x amount of $$$ and/or success would not guarantee me "happiness".

I agree with your final paragraph completely, and I think I said pretty much the same thing somewhere upthread.

dell, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 09:20 (eighteen years ago)

Uh I don't think anyone here is losing sleep over this - I think most of us are just expressing our sympathies, in probably pretty much the same way that we would if we found out our neighbour was depressed.

I dunno, I'm kinda two ways about this - I feel a bit bad about it because I generally quite like what I know of the guy, and wish him well, but that doesn't mean I didn't also roffle at some of the things people have said here, as mean-spirited as they were heh. (And if he was in better shape, some of the joeks here would probably be stuff OW himself would have appreciated, dude having partly written one of the most emotionally touching AND morbidly funny suicide scenes in film).

xpost

Roz, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 09:27 (eighteen years ago)

Really, the main sticking point for me when this kind of thing gets discussed, is that sometimes people have this kneejerk callous attitude towards celebrities who are going through some sort of grief...as if having money and/or being famous somehow makes the pain that such a one feels different from the pain that anyone else feels. Granted, if filmstar x were to be diagnosed with terminal cancer tomorrow, at least they might be able to console themselves with the thought that they could afford the most prestigious medical care, or that the fact of them having money means that their illness wouldn't be a financial burden to their family. But that wouldn't take away from the fact that they would still have to go through the painful and scary experiences of suffering and dying. Peoples' sometime gleeful reaction to miseries encountered by the famous reminds me of The Day of the Locust or something.

I'm certainly no impartial saint, by any means, and I tend to harbor my own set of prejudices which leads me to be indifferent to or even secretly glad upon learning of others' misfortunes...but at the same time, I realize that as much of an incredible jerk that I think someone like Dick Cheney is, and as much karmic payback as he has coming to him, the nobler part of me doesn't really wanna see him suffer various agonies, anymore than I would want to undergo miserable experiences myself.

dell, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 09:39 (eighteen years ago)

Like, what bugs me is that we all seem to go through this mental process when we hear about something terrible happening to someone, where if we "like" the person (even if it's a celebrity, who, realistically speaking, we probably know next-to-nothing about) then we say "man, that sucks; I like him a lot!"...whereas, if it's someone that we are indifferent to, or find obnoxious, then it's as if we are suddenly too stingy to be able to afford that person any sympathy.

I realize that this is just very basic human nature...but it still bugs me for some reason! Why do we have to make these grand judgements as to who is "deserving" or not of our sympathies?

dell, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 09:50 (eighteen years ago)

(And if he was in better shape, some of the joeks here would probably be stuff OW himself would have appreciated, dude having partly written one of the most emotionally touching AND morbidly funny suicide scenes in film).

I have no idea what scene or what movie that is (The Royal Tenenbaums? ...I've never seen that one) but I completely agree with you. I think that people underestimate peoples' sense of humors in situations like this. I can't see his friends or family finding some of the comments here to be very funny, but it is easy to imagine OW himself being amused by some of them.

are you serious? there's no reason for that headline to exist if that were the case.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)

You may be making a Being There-style assumption.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:40 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not.

horseshoe, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, if there's two things subeditors hate it's shoving in unnecessary puns and showing off their pop cultural knowledge.

xp

Dom Passantino, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:41 (eighteen years ago)

what about domeditors?

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:42 (eighteen years ago)

what other reason would there be?? do other celebrity fracases (fraci?) regularly "rock the Hudson"?

xp

gff, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

Wow, Morbius's joke works on, like, three levels.

jaymc, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 19:44 (eighteen years ago)

well, I see what you mean and that was accidental.

Courtney Love is accusing someone of enabling someone else's drug habit?

She has FORM on pulling this shit: during the US tour of a group we shall call 'Rubber Band', the bassist asked one of the Hole roadies for a hookup. When it got back to La Love, she threw a hissy fit and insisted the bassist be sacked - a bit rich, all things considered. Rather than keep this problem on the d-l so the person could solve their own problems she seemed perfectly happy to allow the individual to be abandoned, possibly in an attempt to undermine Rubber Band.

Closer to home I have reason to believe she hastened the demise of one of her own band members.

suzy, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

there is a group we'll call 'Punching Chickens' who's lead singer is rumored to have written Hole's first album.

I don't mean to spread innuendo but there's a certain british comedian we'll call "Steve Coogan" who was murdered by Courtney Love today.

Jon Lewis, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

Dunno Tom. It's a good question.

Kathleen said something very, very provocative to CL. It seems to have been redacted from Wiki.

Xposts HAHA Cudditouuuuut. This was in '95 and the Rubber Band were my friends. I think it was a terrible thing to do to them under the circumstances of the times because it made them become even more furtive and paranoid than most drug users, to have been shopped by the world's biggest drug hypocrite.

CL has a great way of going "LOOK! Look at the DRUGGIE!" while pointing as far away from herself as possible and avoiding mirrors. Actually she does that with any weakness.

As to Owen Wilson, what great 'friends' he has.

Your pop's got endz, but yo he's mad cheap
Maybe you're a bastard child you think
Mom and dad are white and you're dark as ink
Maybe you're Sicilian with a tan
But you hate lasagna and the pizza man
Now you stand on the grave digga locked and
You're singing the blues about the rough life you've got
Not
You don't wanna live no more
I guess you're really ready for the grave yard tour
When you get home just fill up your windows and you doors
Turn your oven on high for about four hours
Light you a blunt, kiss your ass goodbye
You gassed yourself 'cause it's a suicide
