Haha, tons of people I know or saw had the einsturzende neubauten tat! I asked my friend about this once, "I had NO IDEA so many people luvved on the Blixa," but she pointed out it's also the symbol for mercury. They should all just get the square from the periodic table to avoid this confusion.

Abbott, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm a gemini too, Laurel, which maybe explains my desire for a cuscus tat on one shoulder and a planarian (flatworm) on the other.

Abbott, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really believe in astrology, the gemini thing just makes a great cover for being fucked up and/or confused/confusing.

Abbott, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

That's not Coach, it's Chanel.

tokyo rosemary, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

As logos go the bars are hall of fame level, but I really felt (albeit speaking as someone who's never even come close to getting a tattoo) that they were v.v. cliched things to put on your body at this point

DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

You mean like tattoos?

Bob Standard, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

What I want to know is if anyone's tried to replicate the tattoo from that horrid TV show "Prison Break"

I'm rather glad that I never liked tattoos growing up. Hrmm, I see lots of rock tattoos, but are there any jazz or classical music tattoos around? Fukken badass "SOLTI!" tattoo or something? Maybe that ugly yellow "Deutsche Grammophon" plaque across the back. Some classic Blue Note covers, perhaps?

Clearly someone needs to have this covering one side of their torso:

I saw someone w/the neck tattoo from that Foo Fighers album. :(

Abbott, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:19 (eighteen years ago)

Is it true Dave Grohl stopped his after three bars because "it hurt"?

that's what he told me. it's sort of green, too, because he did it with a needle and a biro. he was thirteen.

stevie, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

What is a biro?

Abbott, Tuesday, 28 August 2007 23:52 (eighteen years ago)

1. Hmm the mercury symbol a) hasn't got two legs b) has horns: http://www.androgyny.org.uk/graphics/mercury.gif.

1b. On the other hand, this symbol for John Dee's astrological work (or something) Monas Hieroglyphica is really similar innit? http://gfisher.org/Image2.gif(ok it also has horns)

2. I think the Black Flag logo is quite a masterpiece as logos go actually.

2b. But drawing it in RED is surely missing the point of it TOTALLY!?

3. OMG I'd totally crush on anyone with that Joyce logo! In a non-crepey way, obv.

anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 07:34 (eighteen years ago)

(In the J. Dee symbol, it is the symbol of Aries which is appended at the bottom of the symbol of the planet Mercury.)

anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 07:35 (eighteen years ago)

Grr Joyce tattoo not logo.

anatol_merklich, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 07:36 (eighteen years ago)

I think the Black Flag logo is quite a masterpiece as logos go actually

yeah it's about tied with the Misfits crimson skull i'd say.

latebloomer, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 07:45 (eighteen years ago)

A friend of mine has the Muted Horn symbol (originally, i believe, from Thomas Pynchon's "Crying of Lot 49" and later appropriated by the Buzzcocks), which I've always thought was nice and subtle. I was almost convinced in college to get the cover of Kiss' Rock N' Roll Over done on my ankle (of all places), but simply wasn't drunk enough (isn't that always the way?)

I am and remain tattoo free.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 12:36 (eighteen years ago)

I know a guy with the W.A.S.T.E. muted post horn as well.

But I'm really dissappointed that so far there has been no Husker Du crosses-in-a-circle tattoo.

Rob Bolton, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:01 (eighteen years ago)

for the longest time i wanted the bars on one wrist, and the husker du logo on the other. but now it seems unseemly to have tattoos of bands you were obsessed with when you were 15, and split when you were 10.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:43 (eighteen years ago)

I remember seeing Twisted Sister in `85 at Radio City Music Hall (on the Come Out and Play Tour) and drunken stumbling into the men's room (which was bigger than my apartment). At the urinal next to me was this huge dude with a patch-laden denim vest on. On his shoulder blade nearest me, he had an incredibly detailed Rush tatoo (the naked man/pentagram logo from 2112). Being a mouthy drunk jerk, I said something to the affect of "Hey man, what's gonna happen when Rush put out an album you think stinks -- you're gonna feel like a chump then, eh?" My friend Rob ushered me out of the men's room stealthily, invariably saving me from a much-deserved beating.

Alex in NYC, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 15:48 (eighteen years ago)

http://www.kudosproductions.co.uk/images/radiohead_header_image.gif

I have the two people shaking hands tattooed on my leg, surrounded by other stuff. Only one person in the last 9 years has pegged as being Radiohead related, and that was a week after I got it.

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 17:35 (eighteen years ago)

Also, I'm not really a giant Radiohead fan either.

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 17:36 (eighteen years ago)

I don't really see the point in getting tattoos that you aren't going to regret at some point. They're tattoos! Aren't they supposed to be a bad idea?

Laurel, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:16 (eighteen years ago)

Symbols tattooed on multiple people I know:

- muted post-horn
- Social Security number in bar code
- Black Flag bars
- 45 record insert
- star w/ medal-style shading
- various punctuation (ampersand, semi-colon, exclamation point, etc.)

nabisco, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:31 (eighteen years ago)

Do you ever see someone with the Blag Flag tattoo, and you think, "Hey, that guy really likes Blag Flag," but then a second later you're like, "But what if maybe he's just an exterminator?"

nabisco, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

- star w/ medal-style shading

this is so played out

chaki, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:32 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, but thankfully it doesn't look like much. If you're gonna have a played-out tattoo, a 3/4-inch red-and-black star isn't so bad: no one is going to go "OMG how embarrassing, that idiot thought a small simple icon would look good."

nabisco, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:37 (eighteen years ago)

Lately I've seens TONS of "golden section" diagram tatoos. Where did this come from?

Bob Standard, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:39 (eighteen years ago)

Usually when I see the star tattoos they're much bigger than that. And in this town, I see 'em a lot.

Oilyrags, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:41 (eighteen years ago)

Oh nautical stars, you are everywhere! They should come with a "best by" date.

Laurel, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

That said I am really okay with the "my body is a tattoo wonderland and I am just going to get random shit on it" as long as you are prepared for some of it to be shit. But then don't show it all around town or like agonize over what's coolest, just get the impulse thing that you were going to let your friend do anyway as an experiment.

Laurel, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:51 (eighteen years ago)

Because then at least it's some interesting history, like "this was my best friend's first tattoo work on a human being and I am proud to have it even though it's basically a mess."

Laurel, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:52 (eighteen years ago)

What just confuses me is the "I am so punk rock that I have been agonizing over which Sailor Jerry tattoo to get and taking applications from the best artists in the tri-state area, and this is my highly educated choice. Isn't it just like everyone else's but better??"

Laurel, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:55 (eighteen years ago)

I am sick of seeing LA Ink ads everywhere with that Kat von D woman on them, because I can't help imagining she is the result of Carlos D having sex with a Von Dutch hat, but I will admit that I totally like her Star Trek-y "stars around eye" tattoo.

nabisco, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:57 (eighteen years ago)

Sailor Jerry tattoos must be stopped by any means neccessary. xpost

John Justen, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:58 (eighteen years ago)

Finding a good tattoo artist, OTOH, is v v important. Unless you're doing Black Flag bars, in which case, fuck it.

John Justen, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

xp Well I mean at one point they weren't on everyone yet, and they were still a sign of allegiance to something. You can roll your eyes but the trend DID have to get re-started somewhere. Which is what I meant by "best by" date.

Laurel, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 20:59 (eighteen years ago)

This one will always make me chuckle

re: Kat Von D - on last week's show she said that one of her legs is just covered in tattoos she had amateur friends give her. Cool idea, if kinda insane.

milo z, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 21:13 (eighteen years ago)

Is 'Sailor Jerry' synonymous with 'American traditional' or are y'all just ragging on straight Sailor Jerry rips?

milo z, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 21:15 (eighteen years ago)

I'm talking about full on rip-offs.

John Justen, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 21:17 (eighteen years ago)

Sort of the equivalent of flash for the punker-than-thou subset.

John Justen, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

American trad, probably. Both in style (heavy black outlines, cartoony/comic-y treatment of art) and subject matter (including things appropriated by the skinhead/rockabilly revivals which are now omni-present in multiple Bklyn neighborhoods). But straight-ahead rips wd be even worse.

Laurel, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

"I wanna get a tattoo" : having a pressing tattoo idea :: "I wanna start a band" : having pressing musical-expression needs

carne asada, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 21:45 (eighteen years ago)

That said I am really okay with the "my body is a tattoo wonderland and I am just going to get random shit on it" as long as you are prepared for some of it to be shit.

This is pretty much how I get tattooed. I think "hey, this would be funny/interesting to get a tattoo of". Then I end up getting it. And it's there forever, reminding me of why I thought this would be fun to get a tattoo of. I don't really regret any of them, they're there and ended up there for a reason at some point in time. Some could be better, one's probably getting covered up at some point, but that's it.

I don't get people who really want to get a tattoo but agonize over it forever and can't handle the permanence and just stress it. Fuck it, life's short, get the damn tattoo. Just don't get it on your neck or hands.

joygoat, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

Abbott, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

My friend got a tattoo of a picture I drew for him:

http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f86/igotabeefpastry/gremlin.jpg

I have mixed feeling about it:
- Whoa! Someone got a tat of something I drew! I'm one step closer to "making it!"
- He got a tat of a picture I drew AND colored in about ten minutes, when I could've drawn something a lot better.
- At least it's a good tattoo with nice ink and shading, but why didn't the tat artist fix up my weird mistakes (like his legs)?
- Worst: O god this guy wants me to be his special time love way and that will never happen and he has a tattoo to remind him of this FOR-EV-ER.

Abbott, Wednesday, 29 August 2007 23:58 (eighteen years ago)

This is pretty much how I get tattooed. I think "hey, this would be funny/interesting to get a tattoo of". Then I end up getting it. And it's there forever, reminding me of why I thought this would be fun to get a tattoo of.

I know someone who gets tattooed this way too. It's how she ended up with a ridiculously well done and awesome tatoo of Howard the Duck.

Confession time: One of my tattoos is a star but I got it ages ago and until recently it was just an outline. I've recently had other things done to it but it's nothing near nautical star territory.

ENBB, Thursday, 30 August 2007 00:23 (eighteen years ago)

I know, it was completely ricockulous thought, they were all just my initial impressions. More meant in the sens of my friends who'd be like, "Someone in PORTLAND heard a song of mine and they LIKED it! Top 40 here I come!" I mean in wtf sense could I be "making it." Silly me.

Nautical stars don't bother me, really. It's a good, simple graphic that looks ok wherever it's placed.

the awesomeness of that tattoo negates anything else

latebloomer, Saturday, 1 September 2007 15:26 (eighteen years ago)

it's different cause it's on his chest, so it's covered w/ his shirt. basically what i was saying only applies to like the calf or something, like my boss who has a random patch of hair shaved off there for some sun or hurricane or some shit.
needless to say that it looks unspeakably retarded.

Am I imagining it, or was that black fag logo used for something involving Chicago house? It would make sense I guess.

And those hotdogs are insane!

mehlt, Sunday, 2 September 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)

Oh am drunk, so this is where I go all obnoxious and say that I really don't mind nautical stars either, in fact I pretty much LIKE them, but it helps a lot if you got them 10 years ago, instead of in 2006 and you're now 24.

...still a good idea in 2007?

in 2007 black flag bars may as well be tie dye. fucking relics from a bygone era, get on with/over it.

chicago kevin, Monday, 26 November 2007 03:46 (eighteen years ago)

but Black Flag bars are punk as fuck, whereas tie-dye is a hippie thing.

Wrinklepaws, Monday, 26 November 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

I can't hate the bars, cos I'm pretty sure the 2006 Favorite Noize Bartender had them.

they meant SO MUCH at the time of Damaged im sure! "Thats Incredible! Saturday Night Live!"

chaki, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:08 (eighteen years ago)

in 2007 black flag bars may as well be tie dye. fucking relics from a bygone era, get on with/over it.

The key diff here is that hippie culture, being the supposed expression of the baby boom generation, was deified and dominated popular culture for far longer than was warranted. Punk culture, regardless of the fact that a zillion thickheads won't let it "die" a natural death, never achieved that state of dominance, and hence the subsequent putrescence is somewhat less vomitorious.
