Not too bad, as they say. Been working away from home all week, but am getting home at a reasonable hour so family reunion at five thirty or so!

There's a smell in my office, it smells like food and sometimes it's kind of nice, but I don't know if it is food and I don't know if I should be enjoying the smell of it. In fact now I feel a little sick.

I'm also a bit sick. Hormones probably. Ever since being pregnant, I have been smelling poop. :-(

Sam, it's hardly complex stuff - what on earth makes you want to re-read it? It's fun the first time but the book is all plot and fluff, so once you know what happens there's almost nothing left to encourage you back (until, I'll admit, the books have become a distant memory, but that can't be the case here).

I might be completely wrong here but it seems to me that ilx has become much more US-centric in recent months. Have some brits/europeans fallen by the wayside? Did Dom really make that much difference?

Challops maybe here: I think a lot of Brits were driven off *during* Dom's reign of terror and haven't come back. He was just so noisy that no one really noticed until he was gone.

Starting the Christmas gorging and enjoying the merry sound of the kids bickering around the fire.

gorging, yes. andre brought home brownies and moose munch tonight -- a christmas present from the parents of one of his students. and we still had some sea salt caramels left over (another present).

So far - some Duck Supreme pie, chicken liver pate, bit of spare icing from the Christmas cake, some Chevda, which is like Bombay Mix with potato crisps and puffed rice in there. This sounds really bad but I'm only grazing, honest, so I haven't eaten loads. The real test will be when we crack open the advocaat and start mixing Snowballs.

Am kinda slumping zombified on my chair, sleeping patterns in ruins. Ruins. Last sleep: 6pm to 2 am. Have no idea what I should do now. Am dead tired. It's the middle of the fecking day. There's nothing to do. There's too little to do. Feeling as profoundly un-Xmassy as one can. I've eaten loads of olives, loads of dates, two cookies, two mince pies and a toasted sandwich. Where are my friends? They should call me. I should call them. I should go to bed.

I just waited in line at the grocery store for ten minutes to buy some pretzels and chocolate, on the wife's request. But the store is throbbing: I'll be surprised if there's any foie gras, chestnuts, or haricots verts left in France---or cheese, given how fast the 12 euro cheese plates are going. We're having boeuf bourguignon tonight---Christmas eve is the traditional feast night in France, evidently. And anyway we're going to Parc Disneyland tomorrow (yeah, we're American expats), so there'll be no time for feasting tomorrow.

xposts: indeed. i keep them in the freezer, because frozen sweets are a wonderful thing.

This is why we don't break out all the Christmas food around here until Christmas Eve evening, because by then you're really jonesing for Quality Street, mince pies, etc.

The snow has melted---we had about 7 cm by midweek, but it's been warm and rainy the last two days. I see that it's to snow in Normandy tomorrow, but evidently the Ile-de-France is to avoid it.

i did my cooking at thanksgiving... this christmas will probably be all about cheap local restaurants that stay open. yes virginia, there is a buck to be made in the ethnic food sector.

Otherwise I'm working today (the academic never stops), alternating with stints of Colonization (the old DOS version). My kids are reading Asterix comics. It's as festive as can be when you're four thousand miles away from your usual Christmas traditions (i.e. boozing it up with the parents).

Our snow is melting now, I don't think the temperature's been below freezing for the last couple of days, but there's still enough from last weekend to mean that the streets will look festive this year. Or really dangerous, depending how old you are.

You and my dad are in accord, although I think he's at work today. Potted Stilton sounds kinda lovely, will have to Google 'sea salt caramels' because I'm still a little skeptical.

All caramels have salt in them, LJ, it's just that these make a feature of the sea salt thing.

I'm in London for Christmas this year, so no chasing for Doctor Who burns after the fact. Now in the midst of making sausage and wild rice stuffing in amounts that require a large bucket to manage, for dinner at married friends' house tomorrow (female half of couple is a chef).

i would try fish with a pipian mole.

I think I've had a mole poblano in Mexico with fish, though I don't recall the type of fish.

I would not pair a mole negro with fish. I believe the mole would overpower the fish and not do either the mole or the fish any justice.

they make a yellow mole down the street here - is that a pipino? poblano's really what I think of when I think of mole and the only fish I can imagine that working with is maybe catfish. then again I haven't eaten fish in something like 20 years so why don't I just get my coat

Well, I googled and there's a recipe for shrimp poblano so maybe monkfish would work? However there is also a recipe for mole poblano made with NUTELLA so I'm going back to stage three and four of stuffing production before I fwow up.
