Today is quiet here.

So how are you doing, Mark?
― nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:23 (eighteen years ago)
Not too bad, as they say. Been working away from home all week, but am getting home at a reasonable hour so family reunion at five thirty or so!
― Mark G, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:25 (eighteen years ago)
Hurrah! So why did you have to be working away from home? You otherwise work at home? I am pampered: our house is just across the street. No traffic jams or having to sit in a train listening to endless chitchat.
― nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:28 (eighteen years ago)
Noh, normal working place is within 4 miles. Not 270.
― Mark G, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:30 (eighteen years ago)
Ek. So you're staying in a hotel?
― nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)
yeah. Nice, but.
― Mark G, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:38 (eighteen years ago)
There's a smell in my office, it smells like food and sometimes it's kind of nice, but I don't know if it is food and I don't know if I should be enjoying the smell of it. In fact now I feel a little sick.
― *rumpie*, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:42 (eighteen years ago)
ha, last night they were irrigating (or something) the fields next door. It didn't smell muck like food, put it that way!
― Mark G, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:45 (eighteen years ago)
much like food I mean. mind you...
I'm also a bit sick. Hormones probably. Ever since being pregnant, I have been smelling poop. :-(
Mark, how many stars is the hotel? Can you take from the room bar (or whatever you call it)?
― nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:46 (eighteen years ago)
DO SOME WORK.
― Matt DC, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)
Work? Are you mad! I can't anymore. Don't have the energy. I wish I could just lie on a bed but I keep the shop open and sit behind the comp posting away.
― nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:48 (eighteen years ago)
oh, it's four star, no room bar (but then, every room bar is a rip-off, oi oi oi)
Been nicking the Aerochoc drink sachets for the kids though.
― Mark G, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:51 (eighteen years ago)
I heard a rumour that farmers are going to start spraying their fields with human excrement. I hope it stays a rumour.
― *rumpie*, Friday, 14 September 2007 09:57 (eighteen years ago)
Can't be any worse than cow shit, right?
I've been trying to finish my first Harry Potter book (first book). It's okay. So what are you guys reading?
― nathalie, Friday, 14 September 2007 10:00 (eighteen years ago)
Just finished "The Story of Crass", excellent book!
― Mark G, Friday, 14 September 2007 10:02 (eighteen years ago)
cows are herbivores, therefore their shit is about 50000 times more acceptable (and bacteria-free) than the omnivorous human variety.
― Just got offed, Friday, 14 September 2007 10:03 (eighteen years ago)

Story of Crass? Who's the author?

I'm reading The Granta Book of Travel. Nice bite sized tales, great for my lunch hour.

Why is it so quiet?
― Jarlrmai, Friday, 14 September 2007 12:51 (eighteen years ago)
It's because people aren't posting much.
― StanM, Friday, 14 September 2007 12:52 (eighteen years ago)

I'll be drunk by then. I've never posted drunk before (I don't think)
I make little enough sense sober.
― *rumpie*, Friday, 14 September 2007 13:33 (eighteen years ago)
hooray! I was going to send one to you, glad I did it. If you like it maybe I'll send you some later ones. I'm still on my second re-read of number 7.
Don't be quiet today. I'm alone in the office. :(
― Ms Misery, Friday, 14 September 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)
Sam, it's hardly complex stuff - what on earth makes you want to re-read it? It's fun the first time but the book is all plot and fluff, so once you know what happens there's almost nothing left to encourage you back (until, I'll admit, the books have become a distant memory, but that can't be the case here).
― Mark C, Friday, 14 September 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)
t's hardly complex stuff - what on earth makes you want to re-read it?
I haven't finished the re-read because I'm stuck in that stupid protracted camping trip. I raced through it in two days so now want to read it again more slowly, to get a better grasp on my final opinion. Currently it's propping up my bedside lamp.

― *rumpie*, Monday, 17 September 2007 11:37 (eighteen years ago)
Sam, no need! I already ordered the second book of HP. I quite like it. It's not earthshattering (for me anyway) but very entertaining.
I'm now reading an analysis of Xuxa.

I might be completely wrong here but it seems to me that ilx has become much more US-centric in recent months. Have some brits/europeans fallen by the wayside? Did Dom really make that much difference?
― Ned Trifle II, Wednesday, 26 August 2009 09:56 (sixteen years ago)
Challops maybe here: I think a lot of Brits were driven off *during* Dom's reign of terror and haven't come back. He was just so noisy that no one really noticed until he was gone.

gorging, yes. andre brought home brownies and moose munch tonight -- a christmas present from the parents of one of his students. and we still had some sea salt caramels left over (another present).
― The Détourn of the Depressed (get bent), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:42 (sixteen years ago)
So far - some Duck Supreme pie, chicken liver pate, bit of spare icing from the Christmas cake, some Chevda, which is like Bombay Mix with potato crisps and puffed rice in there. This sounds really bad but I'm only grazing, honest, so I haven't eaten loads. The real test will be when we crack open the advocaat and start mixing Snowballs.
― Domnesty International (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:44 (sixteen years ago)
Am kinda slumping zombified on my chair, sleeping patterns in ruins. Ruins. Last sleep: 6pm to 2 am. Have no idea what I should do now. Am dead tired. It's the middle of the fecking day. There's nothing to do. There's too little to do. Feeling as profoundly un-Xmassy as one can. I've eaten loads of olives, loads of dates, two cookies, two mince pies and a toasted sandwich. Where are my friends? They should call me. I should call them. I should go to bed.
I hope ILX is getting its Xmas Eve thang on!!! Festive in the '09.
Hang on, sea salt caramels?
― uttery cuntery (acoleuthic), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:46 (sixteen years ago)
They're very salty.
― Mark G, Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:48 (sixteen years ago)
I just waited in line at the grocery store for ten minutes to buy some pretzels and chocolate, on the wife's request. But the store is throbbing: I'll be surprised if there's any foie gras, chestnuts, or haricots verts left in France---or cheese, given how fast the 12 euro cheese plates are going. We're having boeuf bourguignon tonight---Christmas eve is the traditional feast night in France, evidently. And anyway we're going to Parc Disneyland tomorrow (yeah, we're American expats), so there'll be no time for feasting tomorrow.
― Euler, Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:49 (sixteen years ago)

― The Détourn of the Depressed (get bent), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:50 (sixteen years ago)
This is why we don't break out all the Christmas food around here until Christmas Eve evening, because by then you're really jonesing for Quality Street, mince pies, etc.

Yay, Christmas in Disneyland. You got snow over there Euler? (Wd kill for some foie gras.)

― Domnesty International (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:52 (sixteen years ago)
The snow has melted---we had about 7 cm by midweek, but it's been warm and rainy the last two days. I see that it's to snow in Normandy tomorrow, but evidently the Ile-de-France is to avoid it.
― Euler, Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:54 (sixteen years ago)
i did my cooking at thanksgiving... this christmas will probably be all about cheap local restaurants that stay open. yes virginia, there is a buck to be made in the ethnic food sector.
― The Détourn of the Depressed (get bent), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:55 (sixteen years ago)
Otherwise I'm working today (the academic never stops), alternating with stints of Colonization (the old DOS version). My kids are reading Asterix comics. It's as festive as can be when you're four thousand miles away from your usual Christmas traditions (i.e. boozing it up with the parents).
― Euler, Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:57 (sixteen years ago)
Our snow is melting now, I don't think the temperature's been below freezing for the last couple of days, but there's still enough from last weekend to mean that the streets will look festive this year. Or really dangerous, depending how old you are.
― Domnesty International (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:57 (sixteen years ago)
Jamming Radio 3 all day is the best way to get yr Xmas on imo
You and my dad are in accord, although I think he's at work today. Potted Stilton sounds kinda lovely, will have to Google 'sea salt caramels' because I'm still a little skeptical.
― uttery cuntery (acoleuthic), Thursday, 24 December 2009 12:57 (sixteen years ago)
All caramels have salt in them, LJ, it's just that these make a feature of the sea salt thing.
I'm in London for Christmas this year, so no chasing for Doctor Who burns after the fact. Now in the midst of making sausage and wild rice stuffing in amounts that require a large bucket to manage, for dinner at married friends' house tomorrow (female half of couple is a chef).

― The Détourn of the Depressed (get bent), Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:10 (sixteen years ago)
i never heard of a seafood mole - sounds kind of disgusting I have to say
― Herodcare for the Unborn (J0hn D.), Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:11 (sixteen years ago)
I think it'd work with a firm-textured fish like shark or snapper.
― Domnesty International (Noodle Vague), Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:11 (sixteen years ago)
i would try fish with a pipian mole.
― The Détourn of the Depressed (get bent), Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:13 (sixteen years ago)
I think I've had a mole poblano in Mexico with fish, though I don't recall the type of fish.
― Euler, Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:13 (sixteen years ago)
I would not pair a mole negro with fish. I believe the mole would overpower the fish and not do either the mole or the fish any justice.
Having visions of a cagematch here.
― uttery cuntery (acoleuthic), Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:15 (sixteen years ago)
they make a yellow mole down the street here - is that a pipino? poblano's really what I think of when I think of mole and the only fish I can imagine that working with is maybe catfish. then again I haven't eaten fish in something like 20 years so why don't I just get my coat
― Herodcare for the Unborn (J0hn D.), Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:38 (sixteen years ago)
salt + caramel = an amazing flavour combination
― just sayin, Thursday, 24 December 2009 13:42 (sixteen years ago)
Well, I googled and there's a recipe for shrimp poblano so maybe monkfish would work? However there is also a recipe for mole poblano made with NUTELLA so I'm going back to stage three and four of stuffing production before I fwow up.
