LOL ARGENTINA

That's the ticket.
And yes, lol argentina.
― Matt, Monday, 17 September 2007 12:59 (eighteen years ago)
I just saw Alex Scott's goal again OMG KEEPER
I'm wondering who's done worse, the goalie for the Germany game, or the one who's been in for the last two. It's a tight call.
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:00 (eighteen years ago)
The keepers are SO BAD. When a team wins a free-kick within about 5 or 10 yards of the goal, it is in essence a penalty kick. I haven't actually seen on so far this tournament that HASN'T gone in. England let in two against Japan. New Zealand against Denmark. Now England again. Whenever the free-kick is awarded, there will ALWAYS be one player who can at least get it on target at a half-decent pace, without hitting it straight at the goalie. THIS WILL ALWAYS BE ENOUGH. It is embarrassing.
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:19 (eighteen years ago)
YOU INSENSTIVE ARSE
― blueski, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)
The Argentinian team are so bad at football they deserve to be beaten up. By men. With fists.
― Dom Passantino, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:20 (eighteen years ago)
what i didn't get was how the press kept saying England would DEFINITELY be thru if they beat Arg by 2 goals without even bothering to include 'unless Japan beat Germany which is extremely unlikely but not impossible' or something similar - what gives?
― blueski, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:35 (eighteen years ago)
ANOTHER FUXXING GOALKEEPING ERROR, this time from the hapless Argentinian.
Argentinian girls all over the country should be watching this, buying a pair of gloves, and demanding to be selected for the national team.
Germany were never going to lose to japan amirite
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:37 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, and the Germans are only one up at the mo' - Big New Prinz in the first half. So England can run up whatever score they like here (now 5-1 I see) but if the Japanese produce another late show, England could go out.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)
japan will need to score 6 goals in 20 minutes to knock england out
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:40 (eighteen years ago)
oh wait no i am wrong
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:41 (eighteen years ago)
if japan win england will need to score 7 more goals
maybe 6 or 5 depending on how much japan win by
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:42 (eighteen years ago)
No, we're all wrong... if Japan win, England go through with any win (Ger: 4, Eng: 5, Jap: 7). If Japan draw, England go through with a two-goal win (Jap: 5 (+1), Eng: 5 (+2), Ger: 5 (+11). If Japan lose, England go through with any win (Jap: 4, Eng: 5, Ger: 7).
So the BBC were right all along!
― Michael Jones, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:51 (eighteen years ago)
Jagger, just put your hands up and admit you were wrong before this hits 500 posts
― That mong guy that's shit, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:52 (eighteen years ago)

Showing the own-goal again. Lethal.
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:54 (eighteen years ago)
And...Eng win 6-1, Ger win 2-0.
― Michael Jones, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:55 (eighteen years ago)
so basically all of you are telling me I should be watching this, because women figured out how to make soccer awesome?
― El Tomboto, Monday, 17 September 2007 13:57 (eighteen years ago)
If it's brilliant skill you're after, stay away (Kelly Smith's goal today was nicely-taken, mind), but if it's hysterically inept play that floats your boat, then wade right in!
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)
Uh-oh, looks like a England USA ding dong though in the next round.
Bah, England always get the worst draw.
― Pete, Monday, 17 September 2007 14:00 (eighteen years ago)
I'm being harsh; one of the US goals against Sweden last week was a thing of absolute beauty. The US, Germany and Brazil are on a different planet to the rest, though.
― Just got offed, Monday, 17 September 2007 14:01 (eighteen years ago)
That's why the England Germany game was so good. It was one of those classic 0-0's which was really a victory for the UK.
Now if we could parley that result into a rematch in the final, it could go any way, they have that little bit more confidence now. Its a definite sign that the UK is growing as a team to be one of the best in the world.
But the US will be tough.

i think what this really shows is that goalkeepers in men's football are now TOO BIG and thus the goals should be increased in size to make up for this.
i am only semi-joking ;)
are england playing 4-4-2 btw? or is that team list just really oddly laid out? they usually play 4-3-3 you see.

Not true, there's a lot of skill on display. And the games are less cagey than the shite the men regularly dish up in World Cups. But, yes, the goalkeeping is embarrassing, it's almost hard to believe it could be so bad - esp. when you consider these are the best women players in the world! Also, the players seem to tire quicker - I thought women had more stamina than men?
― Tom D., Tuesday, 18 September 2007 09:47 (eighteen years ago)

― CarsmileSteve, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 14:58 (eighteen years ago)
Germany are a better team than the US at the moment. The problem is do we play for the draw and penalties, because whilst I think we were strong against Germany, we barely had a meaningful shot.
That said 1-0 US vs Nigeria is pretty poor.
― Pete, Tuesday, 18 September 2007 16:11 (eighteen years ago)
we're totally not playing to our strengths if we sit back. we need to get yankey and aluko running at them, winning fouls and getting the balls on to white and scott, j's heads so smith, k can goalhang all she likes (see fourth (fifth?) goal against argentina)

imagine a boring game of men's football and then imagine that all the players hadn't been fed for a week before the game, had all been given dead legs and sat on a roundabout for half an hour before the game so their strenght, coordination and stamina all got shot to fuck and then you have women's football.

my biggest issue with women's football is the goalkeepers, and how winning a free-kick within 25 yards is tantamount to a penalty

We're never going to hear the end of this one.
I'm up in my sister's house just now, I was watching the game, she, having no interest in any sport of any kind, was reading the paper. A goal was scored, she looked out from behind her paper, "Who scored?" "England" "Oh fuck".

Tremendous victory for England. Best in my lifetime, I suppose.
Impressive team, dramatic goals.
And good effort at the tactical art of "dribbling it to the corner flag and winning a throw" in the last 5 minutes.
