Is anyone watching this? Kristen Bell narrates!
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:28 (eighteen years ago)
Didn't realize it started tonight. Will have to download instead.

WHO WANTS THE BOOKS?
― Laurel, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:31 (eighteen years ago)
FUCK THIS SHOW FOR CUTTING THE TOP MODEL PREMIERE IN HALF.
― The Brainwasher, Thursday, 20 September 2007 01:32 (eighteen years ago)
okay I'm totally going to be addicted to this show.
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:01 (eighteen years ago)
i have no idea what this is don't make me go to the internet, plus it'll be better if people just explain it here with words and maybe pictures
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:55 (eighteen years ago)
okay, well, I don't know anything about the books but it's kind of like Cruel Intentions, but serialized? (didn't they already make a show like that?)
set at a schmancy Manhattan private school, it's about, you know, high school drama, with the added stress of being very rich and beautiful. the central formal conceit is that what the show is about is being reported on a gossip blog kept by anonymous "gossip girl"=Kristen Bell voiceover.
do you want me to recap the first episode, rrrobyn?
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 02:58 (eighteen years ago)
this is Serena:
http://www.cwtv.com/shows/gossip-girl/gallery/101/images/c/0002/cw-gossipgirl-genericshow-gl-17_007031-312e41-500x280.jpg
she's the former bad girl who skipped town under mysterious circumstances and has just returned in time for school to start. everyone is apparently in love with her.
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:01 (eighteen years ago)
oh, wait, here's a full cast photo:
http://www.cwtv.com/shows/gossip-girl/gallery/101/images/c/0002/cw-gossipgirl-genericshow-gl-07_006724-c9248b-500x280.jpg
I swear the show is at least a little better than that picture makes it look!
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)
hmm i think i will pass on this, as much as i love shows about highschool is it funny in any way?
they all look like dicks
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:03 (eighteen years ago)
i miss the o.c.
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)
funny doesn't seem to be its main investment. it's sort of serious and arch at the same time. moments of clever dialogue and the acting is pretty good (except for the date rapist guy who is totally ridiculous.)
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)
the ones who don't come off as dicks are former bad girl Serena and slightly less rich dude Dan.
Serena looks cuet
― Curt1s Stephens, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:06 (eighteen years ago)
she is the blonde girl from Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. shut up.
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 03:07 (eighteen years ago)
the whole blogging thing about this is kind of stupid and annoying. but kristin bell sounds just like laurie anderson when she says "xo xo"
― akm, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:07 (eighteen years ago)
Like many shows that are on TV, I'd love to watch this one.
― jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:22 (eighteen years ago)
I saw the first half, and I was wondering if Jaymc caught it (it's written by the creator of the O.C.). I like that Serena character a lot, so that's enough to keep me involved.
― Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:23 (eighteen years ago)
I would watch this, but I can't, because it will be cancelled :(.
― svend, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:27 (eighteen years ago)
Nah, it's on the CW. That guarantees at least a full season.
― milo z, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:28 (eighteen years ago)
you'd think it'd have a built-in audience, too, because the books are pretty popular, right?
am I ever going to get tired of watching shows set in high school?
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)
i would probably watch this randomly if i came across it, but, like antm, i will never be home to see it :\
― tehresa, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:37 (eighteen years ago)
It was a good one to watch on the treadmill at the gym tonight. With all kinds of racy commercials, too.
― Eazy, Thursday, 20 September 2007 04:39 (eighteen years ago)
xxpost Those books are extremely popular. Esp with late teens/early twentysths.
The guy in the pic, at the bottom, looks extremely familiar.
― stevienixed, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)
I was wondering if Jaymc caught it
Nope, I had band practice. (And actually, twice-a-week band practice makes me forget that TV even exists on nights when I do happen to be home.)
― jaymc, Thursday, 20 September 2007 06:18 (eighteen years ago)
i have band practice twice a week and i don't forget the existence of tv and i don't even have a tv
― rrrobyn, Thursday, 20 September 2007 14:59 (eighteen years ago)
the guy dan is the new jesse bradford.
― mizzell, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)
hoping there will be an encore presentation.
― carne asada, Thursday, 20 September 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

actually, ive read these gossip girl books and im quite a fan of blair. i havent seen the premiere yet. recorded it though. the guys look like idiots in those photos but theyre pretty much idiots in the books too. i hope they dont censor the drugs etc for the tv
― sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:54 (eighteen years ago)
oh and i hope they keep blairs bulmia as an accepted thing instead of making it an afterschool special type lesson.
― sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)
I AM GOING OT A REPRINT MTG TO DECIDE HOW MANY COPIES OF THESE BOOKS TO PRINT. PLS WATCH SHOW AND GO BUY THEM*.
*Or email me.
― Laurel, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:55 (eighteen years ago)
*bulimia
waht does that mean, laurel?
― sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:56 (eighteen years ago)
i hope they dont censor the drugs etc for the tv so far chuck smokes a lot of weed and serena appears to have a drinking problem.
― mizzell, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:57 (eighteen years ago)
they show date rapist dude smoking weed constantly. but he is a date rapist, so I guess they're saying weed is bad.
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)
weed always make me want to rape too
― carne asada, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)
ha!
― horseshoe, Thursday, 20 September 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)
is chuck gay yet?

omg sunny, no!
oo..spoilerz! SORRY
― sunny successor, Thursday, 20 September 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)
ok i watched this
― rrrobyn, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)
i don't like the narration but i could get into the show obv has same structure as the o.c. but sadly is not set in california and is lacking in peter gallagher
― rrrobyn, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:32 (eighteen years ago)
oh how i long for those eyebrows
― tehresa, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:37 (eighteen years ago)
The actress who plays Blair was driving me crazy, looking like some hybrid of Rory and Lyla from Friday Night Lights. And then I looked her up and found out she was Debbie, girlfriend of Behrooz "you are not your father's son" on 24, and Carrie Bishop on Veronica Mars. I can finally rest easy now.
― Yerac, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)
i felt like all the characters looked like other people! or like people on the oc! felt dizzy for the first 25 min b/c of it
after watching this i watched the last couple of eps from s6 of degrassi. that show owns
― rrrobyn, Saturday, 22 September 2007 18:50 (eighteen years ago)
how do the books work? i've been searching on amazon.co.uk but it's CONFUSING as idon't know which one is the first. or are they not serialized (???)?
― stevienixed, Saturday, 22 September 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)
this is from wiki, nath:
1. Gossip Girl 2. You Know You Love Me 3. All I Want Is Everything 4. Because I'm Worth It 5. I Like It Like That 6. You're the One That I Want 7. Nobody Does It Better 8. Nothing Can Keep Us Together 9. Only In Your Dreams 10. Would I Lie to You? 11. Don't You Forget About Me 12. It Had To Be You (Set to be released October 2, 2007)
somewhere around number 7 or 8 the jenny character branches off into her own series "IT girl" set in some kind of new england prep boarding school.
― sunny successor, Sunday, 23 September 2007 13:10 (eighteen years ago)
Oh thanks! After I made my post, I realizeds: Just wiki that shit, stupid Nath! I think I managed to put the compendium (?) in my Amazon basket. Can't resist these books! :-)
― stevienixed, Sunday, 23 September 2007 17:58 (eighteen years ago)
the books are pretty great but this show, ugh. i finally watched it last night. its all wrong. i want to remake it. also, i miss summer roberts :(
― sunny successor, Monday, 24 September 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)
Yesss, yeeesssssss....
― Laurel, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:00 (eighteen years ago)
Sadly the series # is not included in the titles anywhere, or on the covers, so it's practically impossible to remember which is which. I can't decide whether that's brilliant or not in terms of making readers/buyers check the ENTIRE SERIES every time, but it's a pain in my ass, that's for sure.
― Laurel, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)
Laurel, do you lend books to peoples?
― Yerac, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:26 (eighteen years ago)
Officially? No. Go and buy them.
BTW, what are you doing later this week? I've got some stuff for you.
― Laurel, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:28 (eighteen years ago)
The T.V. show, not the place. It debuted on Fox this week. It stars Peter Gallagher's eyebrows and a very attractive actress with very sharp teeth who the IMDB tells me is named Mischa Barton. It was created by McG and the pilot was directed by Doug Liman. It's about a kid from the wrong side of the tracks (and with a v. bad haircut) who ends up being taken in by a rich family from the O.C. Melodrama ensues. -- amateurist (amateurist), Thursday, August 7, 2003 4:55 PM (4 years ago) Bookmark Link
― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:35 (eighteen years ago)
I remember TV exists, I just forget that there are shows on that I might want to watch that I can basically just go over to my living room and press a button and there they are. Although sometimes I don't get home until 7:30 or 8, and then I have to make dinner, and so I'd be missing some prime-time comedy, anyway.
― jaymc, Monday, 24 September 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)
(Basically, I only watch TV on DVD, so I'll come back to this thread next summer, when S1 is released.)

― r|t|c, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 01:15 (eighteen years ago)
dunno how the sex and the desperate housewife city voiceover is gonna play out successfully yet tho, it got old quick
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)
i saw the rerun last night. that voiceover IS awful!
― tehresa, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 02:20 (eighteen years ago)
Buh buh but it's Kristen Bell!!!!
― nathalie, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 12:23 (eighteen years ago)
i wish they'd just use their names. all of this b and s and s said b and did c business kind of drove me crazy
― sunny successor, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 13:47 (eighteen years ago)
also pretty funny how dan chose the rescuing his sister from being raped moment to go into a rant about how chuck does know his name.
― sunny successor, Tuesday, 25 September 2007 13:50 (eighteen years ago)
ep2: yeah i'm def into this now, but voiceover sux harder and harder everytime. at the very least they could build up the, i dunno, culture of the gossip blog and how everyone's digging it or something cos right now it is just completely irrelevant. also, bizarre disconcerting bit halfway when it stops commentating in realtime and previews what's about to happen later??!
― r|t|c, Wednesday, 26 September 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)
YES!
but i will still watch the rerun on sunday. how was tonight?
― tehresa, Thursday, 27 September 2007 02:34 (eighteen years ago)
i haven't watched it yet but im guessing it will go something like b is mean to s and s is all 'quit it, b!' and d cant believe s is giving him the time of day and n cant believe s isnt giving him the time of day and b is all 'quit looking at s, n!'. meanwhile, c is date raping the rest of the alphabet.
― sunny successor, Thursday, 27 September 2007 13:45 (eighteen years ago)

― rrrobyn, Friday, 28 September 2007 03:53 (eighteen years ago)
hahaha sunny yes the letters of the alphabet thing is annoying the music is annoying the fast zooms and cuts of close-ups of stupid shit like flowers and food and curtains and tiles (??) is annoying i'm still willing to believe though that a certain set of nyc teens are actually like this, exagerated or not
― rrrobyn, Friday, 28 September 2007 04:01 (eighteen years ago)
OTM. And swoon.
Okay, I've seen the first three episodes and am totally addicted. Martinis! Living in hotels! Eating disorders! Hipster Lofts!
I love Serena and Dan, obviously, and Chuck and Blair for their sheer dastardliness - though what is up with some of the crazy Blair outfits? Ill-fitting blazers, weird Primark-esque white lace ugmo dresses?
― marianna lcl, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)
this show is just not very good at all!! ugh i hate it for all its lost chances on possible goodness
― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 18:30 (eighteen years ago)

― HI DERE, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 18:31 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, even I am not watching this anymore, which is a pretty dire statement.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 18:34 (eighteen years ago)
ok i only half-watched the last three eps - so bad!! where the o.c. could find an audience in people my age, this show has forgotten the importance (ok "importance") of that. also, just bad writing and everything
i hope i have not lost my taste for teenage tv melodrama
― rrrobyn, Wednesday, 31 October 2007 18:41 (eighteen years ago)
so this show sucks? damn.
are the guys hot?
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)
I need to know how Horseshoe feels about the Nancy Franklin article about this show.
― jaymc, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 23:24 (eighteen years ago)
hi John! is it in the most recent new yorker? I will check it out. but you know I hates her, so, I will probably be pretty predictable.
Surmounter, one of the guys is hot. One looks like the planes of his face have been sandpapered. The other one is not attractive.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 23:40 (eighteen years ago)
Yes, I know you hate her. :) The article is here.
(Do you hate her because she's a good deal more slangy than most NYer writers? This article has her using the term "BFFs" without explanation and starting a sentence, "The books are all, '[quote from book]'" Then there was that time when she wanted to write about The Sopranos or something but the article was about something else, and she did the whole "Must. Resist. Temptation. To. Write. About. That. Show." thing, which is kind of irksome.)
― jaymc, Wednesday, 28 November 2007 23:48 (eighteen years ago)
wow i hate her now, too. that is some terrible writing!
― tehresa, Thursday, 29 November 2007 02:44 (eighteen years ago)
how do i find out the brand abd color of blair's lipgloss? seriously. so nice.
― sunny successor, Thursday, 29 November 2007 06:58 (eighteen years ago)
also, i pretty much love this show now. CONVERTED.
re: Nancy Franklin: yeah, she's just a bad writer. it's not the slang itself so much as the way she deploys it. and that article is totally representative of all her articles i.e. totally devoid of insight!
i missed tonight's episode. you would think they would have cosmetic promotions at the end of each one!
― horseshoe, Thursday, 29 November 2007 08:04 (eighteen years ago)
i kind of adore this show now and i LOVE blair.

who is your favorite character so far surm?
― Bright Future (sunny successor), Thursday, 25 September 2008 17:36 (seventeen years ago)
good question! i'm excited to see serena all badass. i feel she can pull off a good bitch.
dan's cute. blair seems pretty great but almost too perfect? not sure.
― Surmounter, Thursday, 25 September 2008 17:38 (seventeen years ago)
ooo...but thats the great thing about blair. she seems like that but then you see little cracks in her perfection. like she'll falter for a moment and it kind of makes you fall in love with her.
i hope serena can be a great badass. im so used to her being blairs voice of reason.
honestly i could do without rufus and vanessa. so snore inducing.
― Bright Future (sunny successor), Thursday, 25 September 2008 17:43 (seventeen years ago)
vanessa did kind of snore me.
you're right tho, when blair started to tear up i felt for her
― Surmounter, Thursday, 25 September 2008 17:48 (seventeen years ago)
honestly it's like someone is constantly walking around with a big shine injector to blair's lips
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 02:56 (seventeen years ago)
i mean you can't have lips that perfect all the time, it's just not possible.
lauren clued me in on it being givenchy's 'pop gloss'.
gimme violine vitamine pls:

what you dont know any 16 y/o bow tie wearing date rapists?
― My name is Katharine. I like to dance. (sunny successor), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:05 (seventeen years ago)
the ones that wear bow ties are the drama geeks, i.e. not the date rapists. date rapists wear "dave matthews band" t-shirts.

hmm i guess its different on the upper east side

would it be... gay... if i asked laurel for those gossip girl books??

so, zombies but fancy-dressed basically
― donna rouge, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:23 (seventeen years ago)
ian, ive read the books. theres a lot more photographed sex in the park and a whole lot more getting high. like the nate character is completely defined by getting high. its pretty good.
― My name is Katharine. I like to dance. (sunny successor), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:26 (seventeen years ago)
paging Laurel and her publishing job...
― ian, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)
i really liked the books but they are different from the show kinda meaner and more distanced from the characters. they're funnier than the show is usually too.
haha i haven't actually seen today's episode yet because i just got home from work. lol ktla.
― ¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶¶ (Lamp), Tuesday, 4 November 2008 03:46 (seventeen years ago)
i would also just like to comment that jenny's dresses are cute and everything, but i'm not sure why they're taking the city by storm. . .

oh yeah and in the books chuck is gay and owns a pet snow monkey

someone is. they get their shit reapplied/readjusted before, during, and after every take, and hair/make-up/wardrobe have their own monitors so they can be like, "omg! hair out of place! cut! cut!"
― lauren, Tuesday, 4 November 2008 15:05 (seventeen years ago)
i am kind of pissed that i just got a hair cut and then saw jenny's new one, because i kind of really like it (obv not blonde but you know, frustrating).

― Surmounter, Saturday, 8 November 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)
right xp
wait so who IS kristen bell, what else has she done? last week's episode was like weirdly good. and i have to say i think serena looks better each episode. the boobage!
― Surmounter, Monday, 10 November 2008 15:40 (seventeen years ago)
excited for tonight.
― Surmounter, Monday, 10 November 2008 15:41 (seventeen years ago)
kristen bell was veronica mars - another cw show (I think??)
im excited too but has anyone else noticed plots dying or going nowhere? like when dan broke up with serena and she turned back to bad serena all she did was make blairs life hell for a couple of episodes and then revert back to good serena. also, how did the whole nate jenny thing suddenly happen?
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Monday, 10 November 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)
Ian, you noob, you could just email me??? Take it to the electronic telegraph, buddy, and I will take care of you.
― Fred Dalton Township (Laurel), Monday, 10 November 2008 16:02 (seventeen years ago)
yeah the nate/jenny thing is so lol. i mean, there were hints of it last season, but it's like 'he moves in, has shirt off, and BAM!' actually, i guess that's not so far off... anyway... l, i'd love to read these silly books at some point, too! we should have a gg book club LOL.
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Monday, 10 November 2008 16:09 (seventeen years ago)
haha.
yeah i actually see the plot thing as kind of a little more real than some other shows that have to drop all the hints and make the build-up really obvious. i mean my life is kind of random like that, i dunno.
― Surmounter, Monday, 10 November 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)
you're right about the good serena bad serena thing, it was weird how that disappeared. the nate/jenny thing is less strange, life is random, but it's not that interesting either, nate's just a whore. i also really dislike the arc about blair's desperation to get into yale, because i love blair and she's been nothing but desperate for the last few episodes.
― Maria, Monday, 10 November 2008 16:43 (seventeen years ago)
this show has a one and a half episode attention span for story arcs.
― akm, Monday, 10 November 2008 16:46 (seventeen years ago)
kind of true. i'm still very confused about a lot of things
― Surmounter, Monday, 10 November 2008 16:51 (seventeen years ago)
it leaves you free to focus on the clothes and lip gloss. speaking of the former, i kind of wish they'd stop with the serena cheesecake (no bra, plunging necklines, microminis).
― lauren, Monday, 10 November 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)
omg that's like my favorite new development
― Surmounter, Monday, 10 November 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)
no, she's getting too tarty, not in a good way.
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Monday, 10 November 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
boring/obvious tarty, imo.
― lauren, Monday, 10 November 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
i always thought i would miss gilmore girls when it went off the air, but i feel like in some weird way by watching 30 rock + gossip girl i get my weekly requirement of screwball yale envy repartee and i don't miss it at all. (though last season of GG kinda helped in the not-gonna-miss-this department.)

now there's a dress.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 00:34 (seventeen years ago)
altho sometimes i feel they could work on her makeup, sometimes her skin looks too dull. especially compared to blair.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 00:36 (seventeen years ago)
LOL @ that ending.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:00 (seventeen years ago)
would smash that dress.
― ian, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:03 (seventeen years ago)
so would the guy in the back, obv.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:04 (seventeen years ago)
i think that's a beer bottle??
― z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:05 (seventeen years ago)
gossip girl is kind of a bad show, but it's more watchable than heroes is at this point e_e
― ian, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:06 (seventeen years ago)
gossip girl is not a good show, but it's so knowingly and entertainingly shallow!
― Maria, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:12 (seventeen years ago)
its not bad on purpose the way the books are but it still has it moments. i mean i want to punch the dad in the face most shows for some reason but i like most of the other characters and chuck bass and i wear the same cardigans apparently so w/e.
― z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:13 (seventeen years ago)
i hate just about all of the characters :( i think i might like mr. inconceivable, and hope he becomes a regular character but kind of doubt that happening.
― ian, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:16 (seventeen years ago)
wait who's mr. inconceivable?
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:17 (seventeen years ago)
he is in the books! in the ILS thread i expressed incredulity that someone so incapable of dressing herself is an OMGWTF fashion designer. i would like to once again state my disbelief and, furthermore, qn why jenny humphrey walks a stork all the time
xpost i assume he meant cyrus rose
― z z. st. z z. uv (Lamp), Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:18 (seventeen years ago)
yes i mean cyrus rose i guess. the guy from the princess bride!
― ian, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:19 (seventeen years ago)
i don't know how i feel about this Aaron character. i mean yes he's ABSOLUTELY ADORABLE. but he seems kind of daft.
― Surmounter, Tuesday, 11 November 2008 02:27 (seventeen years ago)
ok sorry i love Aaron. my girlfriends don't for some reason but i would totally wrap him up and give him to myself for xmas.
serena's thanksgiving outfit!!!!
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:43 (seventeen years ago)
serenas thanksgiving outfit was pretty great from what i remember which is mainly the color.
aaron? UGH!! i even like dan more than aaron and thats saying something.
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 19:58 (seventeen years ago)
see! none of the girls! i think he's a gaycrush kind of guy?
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
yeah, i'm with sunny. aaron might be my least favorite character, which is an achievement. the scenes with just him and serena are EXCRUCIATING.
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)
but <3 <3 <3 wallace shawn.
omg i MELT at their scenes. if i've ever felt like a 12yrold girl (hold all jokes please), it's during those scenes. like the scene when he showed her the art installation? i wanted to be her. bad.
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)
(the art installation with her face all over the walls) (lol)
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:12 (seventeen years ago)
oh, holy shit. i nearly did a spit-take with my bourbon when that masterpiece was unveiled.
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:13 (seventeen years ago)
i'm trying to think of characters i like, or even don't mind so much, and i came up with... blair. i basically only watch this show to look at the clothes
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:17 (seventeen years ago)
lol @ bourbon incident. he's just VERY my type, i guess.
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:20 (seventeen years ago)
well i think i'm the only one who like adores serena's clothes. i mean i get a little too excited, and we'll be like watching with other people and the girls are all "that is NOT good" and i'm drooling
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
i agree with basically everything lauren said. aaron: wtf boring and lame, blair: totally found a soft spot for her!
laurel, jenny walks like a stork because she is too frighteningly skinny to walk normally. you'd walk strange on toothpicks, too!
what do we think is in lily was institutionalized for? aborting rufus' baby?
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:21 (seventeen years ago)
i was gonna guess HAVING his baby and giving it up but that would be too similar to the 90210 stroyline. it IS the CW though...
i don't know but i hate bart.
i never had a problem with blair but i really feel serena's the golden child, as the show intended...
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)
and don't you know you're supposed to hate the golden child?
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:36 (seventeen years ago)
;)
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:37 (seventeen years ago)
i actually really like bart. its like hes playing the upper east side billionaire perfectly. its not his fault everyone around him has suddenly developed freakin conscience.
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)
he looks more wtf? than pissed in most scenes
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:47 (seventeen years ago)
he's spying on his whole family while living with the fact that he once killed a man....
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:49 (seventeen years ago)
also he looks like he's had one too many chemical peels :/

― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)
serenaaaronnatedanjenny
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:52 (seventeen years ago)
i know but what kind of reaction is that? "i have dossiers on my daughter in my vault but ha what's the big deal?"
i hate all the individual humphreys (incl vanessa) but together theyre likable, if that makes any sense
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:53 (seventeen years ago)
because hes the big billionaire guy where this shit is normal
bart cracks me up. when there's a reaction shot on him and he's just sort of standing there looking constipated, you know that something evil is afoot.
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:54 (seventeen years ago)
blair chuck
i think that might be it?
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)
hmm... i guess i love eleanor because she used to be a daytime soap actress.
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:56 (seventeen years ago)
(she was margo on as the world turns.)
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:57 (seventeen years ago)
i actually really like lily
omg and how cute was eleanor with jenny
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:58 (seventeen years ago)
you know what lauren, her face DID look familiar
i like that the whole set up for the bart + lily marriage was that lily is really in love with rufus but marrying bart to make sure she and her kids are looked after well but she doesnt play it as being trapped in some horrible situation. lily really looks likes shes having fun most of the time.
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)
i do like lily and eleanor a good deal. i like eleanor's sassiness and lily's humanness (she makes a lot of mistakes!)
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 20 November 2008 20:59 (seventeen years ago)
yea she does look like she's having fun -- it's in her little smile. cute
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)
oh yeah! she (EW) stutters a bit too - classic soap actor thing
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:00 (seventeen years ago)
like she used to having to do everything in one take
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
i should just go back to daytime soaps, but the design isn't as good.
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:01 (seventeen years ago)
i miss soaps
― Surmounter, Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)
B+B is pretty great still. Most of the other look like theyre being shot of a handicam or something though.
― a country packed with ponies (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

what do we think of vanessa being a bitch?

not surprised. she was a bitch when she first appeared, too.
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:31 (seventeen years ago)
she should look better if she's gonna be a bitch like that.

my friend told me that vanessa has really long hair irl and that they spend several hours hiding this fact in hair/make-up. i don't understand that.
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)
no long hair in williamsburg?
― she should look better if she's gonna be a bitch like that (sunny successor), Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:41 (seventeen years ago)
RONG on so many levels. a) tons of that stuff is shot in DUMBO b) lots of chix have long hair!
― ;n_n; (tehresa), Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:42 (seventeen years ago)
it's weird. she doesn't know why that decision was made. she also told me at one point that s.'s clothes were getting shorter/tighter/more revealing because b. lively likes them that way.
― lauren, Thursday, 20 November 2008 21:48 (seventeen years ago)
ugh her clothes (aside from the pretty red thanskgiving shirt) make me sad

it was v cute.

holy jesus this week's episode. i was drunk, but still. chuck bass.

only saw the end of this. i don't like the guy serena's dating.
― ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 02:49 (seventeen years ago)
after seeing the ridiculous brando pretender, i switched it off and take it all back.
― gabbneb, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)
i don't really get why women love chuck bass.is it just because he's rich and dresses like a dandy?
― ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 02:55 (seventeen years ago)
also, i think i need to add this show to the list of things not to watch cuz too bleak, along with law & order and the news.
― ian, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:01 (seventeen years ago)
Women love Chuck Bass? I find him pretty repellent. Actually, at this point I find all the guys on the show apart from Rufus pretty repellent.
― Maria, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:06 (seventeen years ago)
wow im the opposite. cant stand rufus or dan or serenas man. like chuck and nate just fine.
― RADNESS UNLIMITED! (sunny successor), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:33 (seventeen years ago)
Chuck's still too good at seeming slimy, even though he's less one-dimensional and kind of entertaining with Blair. Nate just has no character at this point apart from bouncing between women, he just seems like a prop for them.
― Maria, Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:36 (seventeen years ago)
yeah true. so is he rich again now daddy is in jail?
― RADNESS UNLIMITED! (sunny successor), Tuesday, 9 December 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)
this episode was great, and the preview of the next ep had me in stitches - chuck bass as the lizard king. what i'd really like is a blair, chuck, and dorota show. more melodrama, please.

updates on all fronts: my ridiculous night was well-warranted, and this episode was amazing! wtf @ blair making me bawl
but i have to say i find chuck's acting agitating and flat.
SO HAPPY W SERENA'S DECISION. good girl.
― Surmounter, Thursday, 11 December 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)
haha, aaron is SUCH an ass. loved his implication that serena's stepfather's sudden death and her family's implosion etc were poor reasons for refusing his surprise offer of a trip, departing immediately.
― lauren, Thursday, 11 December 2008 19:17 (seventeen years ago)

― Surmounter, Thursday, 11 December 2008 19:22 (seventeen years ago)
she was so into it until aaron decided he was so into her and got all creepy "i'm your man" on her. but hey, i can't stand him and hope that he gets written out of the show asap (maybe he can fall into the iguazu falls while they're vacationing?) so anything i say should be taken with a huge grain of salt.
― lauren, Thursday, 11 December 2008 19:25 (seventeen years ago)
grains of salt all around then, cuz every time i look at him I GET HEART PALPITATIONS

― lauren, Thursday, 11 December 2008 19:28 (seventeen years ago)
Ugh, I do not get Aaron. At all. He's boring and wooden and needs a haircut and Serena is always way too tense around him. This episode was fantastic though, and I actually cried during the Blair holding/consoling Chuck scene. (Not so great considering I was watching this on my ipod in the News International canteen.)
― marianna lcl, Thursday, 11 December 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)
well ya know what, i don't know what else to say. even my little cousin, who is related to me, doesn't like aaron. so i think i have some kind of fucked up gene.
anyway i hear he's not coming back with the show in jan. FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK

Underwhelming. Strung out Chuck equals boring Chuck.
Also, the Serena and Dan thing was too easy. They should have let Dan find out first, and then deny Serena.
― Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 6 January 2009 05:55 (seventeen years ago)
definitely an underwhelming return (that episode where chuck's on the roof). boring chuck.
BUT the episode after that was GREAT. the chuck + lily union is awesome. when he saves her in the restroom, that acting on her part really shook me, when she thanks him as she's being escorted out.
good times.

yeh, just a rerun. ep 2.17 on monday. rumour is chuck and blair are getting back together, again.
― yungblut, Thursday, 29 January 2009 23:52 (seventeen years ago)
funniest part of this ep was when nate and vanessa started playing their own version of the Eyes Wide Shut piano music at that mansion.
overall, kind of a routine episode, slightly daft -- i don't like blair.
― Surmounter, Wednesday, 4 February 2009 14:31 (seventeen years ago)
i understand that the point of her character is to be so extreme that you're supposed to like her for at least being upfront about it, but at this point i just don't like her. but i guess that was kind of the point of this episode -- throwing her into a moral quandry.

― akm, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 16:52 (sixteen years ago)
Yes, but: Leighton Meester looked super cute like usual. The worst thing about the show is that it keeps Mary Sue's Serena, who is seriously the worst character on that show. I find her totally uninteresting, and I can't understand why the paparazzi have any interest in her. What an annoying, shallow, vapid idiot.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 15 September 2009 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

Sonic Youth on tonight's Gossip Girl, in musical form. I, I, I think? Plus a namedrop to set it up, something about Rufus "opening for Sonic Youth" or I dunno I wasn't really paying attention. Life, it's bigger than you and you are not me.

Awww man, I missed the Sonic Youth episode. I had read about that.
Contenderizer, why do you think Vanessa is hideous? Yes on the hair, but otherwise, why?
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 13:31 (sixteen years ago)
Vanessa bugs because she always seems bored with everything and can't be interesting to save her life. Her only alternative to bored seems to be frustrated or constipated or something. All the energy goes out of the show when she's talking. She's not as bad as her parents, of course, but close.
Anyway, I really dug the Sonic Youth bit. Kim was great as the minister, such a dry and scratchy presence in an otherwise lush environment. And "Starpower" was splendid, gave the final moments of the big wedding a super-creepy, David Lynch vibe. Plus irony, if yr into that. Definitely worth the wait.
― a bleak, sometimes frightening portrait of ceiling cat (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 14:17 (sixteen years ago)
have vanessa's parents ever been on this show? or are you talking about someone else?

― a bleak, sometimes frightening portrait of ceiling cat (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 15:00 (sixteen years ago)
It's done in a really cliched manner, but Vanessa's the only one who expresses interest in artsy movies and such. I don't agree with ya that "All the energy goes out of the show when she's talking". I like the contrast between her character and the others.
― curmudgeon, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 15:13 (sixteen years ago)
No, I was being a fucking idiot, was talking about Blake fucking Livesy from word one (did I mention that she's hideous?), and am currently feeling all mortified and terrible about it now.
But yeah, Vanessa is very cool, doesn't get near enough screen time, and seems this year to suffered a terrible blow to her hair. And I think the makeup dept. is mad at Taylor Momsen.
― a bleak, sometimes frightening portrait of ceiling cat (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 15:26 (sixteen years ago)

Agree that Blake Lively is just awful. I really loved Meester before this season, but somehow she's become autistic over the summer.
― Mordy, Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:08 (sixteen years ago)
Meester's still great, but the show doesn't seem to know what to do with her (or itself) since graduation, and that's probably throwing her off.
― a bleak, sometimes frightening portrait of ceiling cat (contenderizer), Tuesday, 13 October 2009 16:17 (sixteen years ago)

I cannot stand Vanessa. Even though Dan often rides his high horse he's self-deprecating and funny enough to at least be charming. I know the show needs a conscience in order to not turn into total satire but even when I should root for her I can't.
Now Dorota on the other hand, she is highly underrated.
― musically, Wednesday, 4 November 2009 07:14 (sixteen years ago)
also, i would like to point out that blair's "if it looks like a duck, and walks like a duck" speech at the party was ripped off a famous old 90210 scene where brenda says the same thing to kelly after she finds out she'd been kickin it with dylan

I've never seen GG and I never watched the OC, but I looked forward to watching the 'L.A. in the 80s' spin-off "Lily," (starring Brittany Snow and tom Cruise-impersonator Miles Fisher). Why on earth was this not picked up by the CW?
― Cunga, Tuesday, 8 December 2009 23:08 (sixteen years ago)
Because GG hardly does great in the ratings dept already so a spinoff ended up not making a lot of $en$e to CW
― musically, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 03:12 (sixteen years ago)
Ah, i see.
But then why commission a spin-off pilot to start? That's like beginning the human cloning process before remembering that the person being cloned has an IQ of 78.
― Cunga, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:23 (sixteen years ago)
Gossip Girl started off strong, and I imagine crafting that episode probably had a longer lead time than average. And at the very least it was a buzz-worthy GG ep (I didn't watch the show at that time but was hearing all about it).
― musically, Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:40 (sixteen years ago)
it was fine as an episode, not particularly whatever
― Do you love me now? (surm), Wednesday, 9 December 2009 04:46 (sixteen years ago)
and i think GG is strong at this time, in terms of quality -- it had a definite bullshit phase last season
Doesn't the exec producer of GG (the same guy who did the OC - Josh Schwartz - thanks, Wikipedia) always do this, where he'll have this buzz-worthy show that is much talked about and occasionally riveting but then it starts a steep decline way too soon? Wasn't that the problem with the OC? Didn't that shows' second season have a bullshitty phase, too?

Downloaded the second season of Gossip Girl - so weird how it wanted to be OC East, I think, but missed out on everything that made everyone in The OC likable (or interesting, at the least). Blake Lively and Leighton Meester are v. v. pretty, tho.

Speaking of The O.C., I never knew anything about this idea:
There were plans to turn the show into something of a reverse spin-off. Schwartz being the creative force behind the television series Gossip Girl planned to release a spin-off entitled Valley Girls, originally to premiere in the fall of 2009. Schwartz wanted to tie in the younger versions of the characters from both The O.C. and the principals from Valley Girls to establish a continuity with Gossip Girl.

Yes, it was completely terrible, but I loved the final episode in a ridiculous way.
The ending is incredibly awful (and dark!) though, but if they were going to do the reveal I suppose it made sense in a fucked-up way.
I was reminded of when it was great/watchable (s1, s2) and that was about the most I could expect from the finale.

poor pretty Nate, after all that trouble trying to uncover Gossip Girl's identity, he doesn't even get to find out for himself.
I'm gonna miss Georgina the most.

Biggest surprise of the six seasons -- Liz Hurley was actually pretty great in this show. I mean, wooden as fuck, but somehow great nonetheless.
My favourite period of this show was the second season, when every episode it was Blair or Chuck doing the "I love you," "We can't do this now" conversation, and even thought they did it every bastard episode, it was somehow ALWAYS HEARTBREAKING.

anyone else watch the premiere? thoughts?
i liked it, though the main boyfriend's guilty rich/wokeness thing is a bit heavy-handed and not sure about spoiling GG's identity so early on gives the premise a bit of an expiry date

I liked it too but criticisms that it's devoid of humor are OTM; the teachers are kind of funny but the kids are not, so there is a big Blair/Dorota shaped hole in the middle of the show.
