okay, well, I don't know anything about the books but it's kind of like Cruel Intentions, but serialized? (didn't they already make a show like that?)

set at a schmancy Manhattan private school, it's about, you know, high school drama, with the added stress of being very rich and beautiful. the central formal conceit is that what the show is about is being reported on a gossip blog kept by anonymous "gossip girl"=Kristen Bell voiceover.

she's the former bad girl who skipped town under mysterious circumstances and has just returned in time for school to start. everyone is apparently in love with her.

funny doesn't seem to be its main investment. it's sort of serious and arch at the same time. moments of clever dialogue and the acting is pretty good (except for the date rapist guy who is totally ridiculous.)

the ones who don't come off as dicks are former bad girl Serena and slightly less rich dude Dan.

Like many shows that are on TV, I'd love to watch this one.

I saw the first half, and I was wondering if Jaymc caught it (it's written by the creator of the O.C.). I like that Serena character a lot, so that's enough to keep me involved.

actually, ive read these gossip girl books and im quite a fan of blair. i havent seen the premiere yet. recorded it though.
the guys look like idiots in those photos but theyre pretty much idiots in the books too. i hope they dont censor the drugs etc for the tv

oh and i hope they keep blairs bulmia as an accepted thing instead of making it an afterschool special type lesson.

Sadly the series # is not included in the titles anywhere, or on the covers, so it's practically impossible to remember which is which. I can't decide whether that's brilliant or not in terms of making readers/buyers check the ENTIRE SERIES every time, but it's a pain in my ass, that's for sure.

The T.V. show, not the place. It debuted on Fox this week. It stars Peter Gallagher's eyebrows and a very attractive actress with very sharp teeth who the IMDB tells me is named Mischa Barton. It was created by McG and the pilot was directed by Doug Liman. It's about a kid from the wrong side of the tracks (and with a v. bad haircut) who ends up being taken in by a rich family from the O.C. Melodrama ensues.

i have band practice twice a week and i don't forget the existence of tv
and i don't even have a tv

I remember TV exists, I just forget that there are shows on that I might want to watch that I can basically just go over to my living room and press a button and there they are. Although sometimes I don't get home until 7:30 or 8, and then I have to make dinner, and so I'd be missing some prime-time comedy, anyway.

(Basically, I only watch TV on DVD, so I'll come back to this thread next summer, when S1 is released.)

yeah i actually see the plot thing as kind of a little more real than some other shows that have to drop all the hints and make the build-up really obvious. i mean my life is kind of random like that, i dunno.

you're right about the good serena bad serena thing, it was weird how that disappeared. the nate/jenny thing is less strange, life is random, but it's not that interesting either, nate's just a whore. i also really dislike the arc about blair's desperation to get into yale, because i love blair and she's been nothing but desperate for the last few episodes.

this show has a one and a half episode attention span for story arcs.

i do like lily and eleanor a good deal. i like eleanor's sassiness and lily's humanness (she makes a lot of mistakes!)

Chuck's still too good at seeming slimy, even though he's less one-dimensional and kind of entertaining with Blair. Nate just has no character at this point apart from bouncing between women, he just seems like a prop for them.

Ugh, I do not get Aaron. At all. He's boring and wooden and needs a haircut and Serena is always way too tense around him. This episode was fantastic though, and I actually cried during the Blair holding/consoling Chuck scene. (Not so great considering I was watching this on my ipod in the News International canteen.)

definitely an underwhelming return (that episode where chuck's on the roof). boring chuck.

BUT the episode after that was GREAT. the chuck + lily union is awesome. when he saves her in the restroom, that acting on her part really shook me, when she thanks him as she's being escorted out.

yeh, just a rerun. ep 2.17 on monday. rumour is chuck and blair are getting back together, again.

funniest part of this ep was when nate and vanessa started playing their own version of the Eyes Wide Shut piano music at that mansion.

overall, kind of a routine episode, slightly daft -- i don't like blair.

i understand that the point of her character is to be so extreme that you're supposed to like her for at least being upfront about it, but at this point i just don't like her. but i guess that was kind of the point of this episode -- throwing her into a moral quandry.

also is that ms. carr supposed to be attractive? she kind of looks like a ferret.

i like that the girl with the class resentments has a much nicer apartment than i do. also that lol cell phones was a sticking point for her midwestern sensibilities

Vanessa bugs because she always seems bored with everything and can't be interesting to save her life. Her only alternative to bored seems to be frustrated or constipated or something. All the energy goes out of the show when she's talking. She's not as bad as her parents, of course, but close.

Anyway, I really dug the Sonic Youth bit. Kim was great as the minister, such a dry and scratchy presence in an otherwise lush environment. And "Starpower" was splendid, gave the final moments of the big wedding a super-creepy, David Lynch vibe. Plus irony, if yr into that. Definitely worth the wait.

Agree that Blake Lively is just awful. I really loved Meester before this season, but somehow she's become autistic over the summer.

Meester's still great, but the show doesn't seem to know what to do with her (or itself) since graduation, and that's probably throwing her off.

I've never seen GG and I never watched the OC, but I looked forward to watching the 'L.A. in the 80s' spin-off "Lily," (starring Brittany Snow and tom Cruise-impersonator Miles Fisher). Why on earth was this not picked up by the CW?

Gossip Girl started off strong, and I imagine crafting that episode probably had a longer lead time than average. And at the very least it was a buzz-worthy GG ep (I didn't watch the show at that time but was hearing all about it).

The third season of The O.C. was the shitty season. It rebounded a bit for the fourth and final, but it was too late by that point.

Downloaded the second season of Gossip Girl - so weird how it wanted to be OC East, I think, but missed out on everything that made everyone in The OC likable (or interesting, at the least). Blake Lively and Leighton Meester are v. v. pretty, tho.

Speaking of The O.C., I never knew anything about this idea:

There were plans to turn the show into something of a reverse spin-off. Schwartz being the creative force behind the television series Gossip Girl planned to release a spin-off entitled Valley Girls, originally to premiere in the fall of 2009. Schwartz wanted to tie in the younger versions of the characters from both The O.C. and the principals from Valley Girls to establish a continuity with Gossip Girl.

Yes, it was completely terrible, but I loved the final episode in a ridiculous way.

The ending is incredibly awful (and dark!) though, but if they were going to do the reveal I suppose it made sense in a fucked-up way.

I was reminded of when it was great/watchable (s1, s2) and that was about the most I could expect from the finale.

Biggest surprise of the six seasons -- Liz Hurley was actually pretty great in this show. I mean, wooden as fuck, but somehow great nonetheless.

My favourite period of this show was the second season, when every episode it was Blair or Chuck doing the "I love you," "We can't do this now" conversation, and even thought they did it every bastard episode, it was somehow ALWAYS HEARTBREAKING.

i liked it, though the main boyfriend's guilty rich/wokeness thing is a bit heavy-handed and not sure about spoiling GG's identity so early on gives the premise a bit of an expiry date

I liked it too but criticisms that it's devoid of humor are OTM; the teachers are kind of funny but the kids are not, so there is a big Blair/Dorota shaped hole in the middle of the show.
