I am 26, so I have some fond teenage memories of this decade.

Discuss.

9/11 is so 90s.

max r, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Clothes-wise, far more embarassing than I thought possible.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:04 (seventeen years ago) link

Seriously - 26" leg openings on JNCOs, what the fuck were we thinking? And those were before the leg opening arms race got ridiculous and they started stitching dragon designs on the ass.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:05 (seventeen years ago) link

aww fond memories here too!

Surmounter, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:05 (seventeen years ago) link

90% of the popular music from this decade is unlistenable. Rage Against The Machine holds up surprisingly well in comparison.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Liz Phair is really hot in her VH1 "I Love The '90s" spots

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:07 (seventeen years ago) link

Remember how pissed off we all were at how far to the right Clinton went after '94? Oh, so naive.

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:08 (seventeen years ago) link

90% of the popular music from this decade is unlistenable.

So patently false unless all you listened to was VH1.

The Reverend, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:14 (seventeen years ago) link

I think after the end of the cold war and before 11/9, there was a certain sense of levity in popular culture, things weren't as "serious as your life". That would be my flawed, sweeping generalisation on the decade. ;)

max r, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:15 (seventeen years ago) link

sorry - popular rock music

I would sooner take an ice-pick to the ear than sit through a '90s Alt-Rock Nostalgia Hour

milo z, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I don't detect much change from the mid-90s until today--yeah, obv. we have faster internet connections now and are fighting in Iraq rather than thinking about fighting in Bosnia--but the all-crisis-all-the-time-stuff stuff seems to begin with the 1st WTC bombing on to Waco and OJ and Rwanda and Haiti and Ruby Ridge and OK City and Newt and Rabin and Monica and Impeachment and Columbine and Elian Gonzales and Children of Thalidomide...

mulla atari, Monday, 1 October 2007 03:27 (seventeen years ago) link

I once carried my math book to lunch in the back pocket of my JNCOs.

Clothes were way baggier, weren't they? I was really skinny until the age of about 19, so they were super-baggy on me. Even small T-shirts were loose, tight Ts were hard to find.

I dunno, lots of "cool" things like house music and indie and IT and hip hop went from "quite big" to "the actual mainstream now".

That's the impression I got, anyway.

Baby (x11)

I'm So Glad...

I Will Never Find Another Lover
Sweeter Than You
Sweeter Than You
And I Will Never Find Another Lover
More Precious Than You
More Precious Than You
Girl You Are..
Close To Me You're Like My Mother,
Close To Me You're Like My Father,
Close To Me You're Like My Sister,
Close To Me You're Like My Brother
And You Are The Only One My Everything
And For You This Song I Sing....

All My Life
I Prayed For Someone Like You
And I Thank God
That I..That I Finally Found You
All My Life
I Prayed For Someone Like You
And I Hope That You Feel The Same Way Too
Yes, I Pray That You Do Love Me Too

I'd Send You All That I'm Thinking Of........Baby

Said I Promise To Never Fall In Love With A Stranger
You're All I'm Thinking Of
I Praise The Lord Above
For Sending Me Your Love
I Cherish Every Hug
I Really Love You

All My Life (Ohhhh..Baby, Baby)
I Prayed For Someone Like You
And I Thank God
That I...That I Finally Found You
All My Life
I Prayed For Someone Like You
And I Hope That You Feel The Same Way Too
Yes, I Pray That You Do Love Me Too

You're All That I Ever Know,
When You Smile All My Face Always Seems To Glow,
You Turned My Life Around,
You Picked Me Up When I Was Down,
You're All That I've Ever Known,
When You Smile My Face Glows
You Picked Me Up When I Was Down
Say...You're All That I've Ever Known
When You Smile My Face Glows
You Picked Me Up When I Was Down
And I Hope That You
Feel The Same Way Too
Yes, I Pray That You Do Love Me Too

And All My Life
I Prayed For Someone Like You
And I Thank God
That I..That I Finally Found You
All My Life
I Prayed For Someone Like You

The Reverend, Monday, 1 October 2007 04:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Fine, there are different things in each of two decades but there's not as large a separation as you can find between the 90s and the 80s or the 80s and the 70s. There's not much to be nostalgic about (That 90s Show--Hey we were in Phoenix for the first Lollapollooza when Trent got mad cause his equipment fritzed in the heat and stormed off stage after one song and Perry and Dave Navarro got in a fight onstage!)

latebloomer, Monday, 1 October 2007 06:08 (seventeen years ago) link

Possessing a classically heroic, noble personality not unlike the one associated with characters such as Superman and He-Man, Captain Planet is formed by combining the powers of the rings of the five Planeteers, which represented the four Classical elements: Earth (wielded by Kwame), Fire (Wheeler), Wind (Linka), Water (Gi) - and the additional power of Heart (Ma-Ti). All of these people represented a major ethnicity and each one of them came from a different continent. Upon his formation, he proclaims, "By YOUR powers combined, I am Captain Planet!"

Captain Planet is the combined and magnified powers of all five of the Planeteers' rings, and stands for all that was good and environment-friendly. The Captain is sky-blue skinned, with a grass-green mullet and eyebrows. He wears red shorts, a half-shirt and gauntlets with matching red knee-high boots (his boots were missing in the first episode). His body is composed mainly of a crystal compound.

Captain Planet has a very impressive array of powers: he can fly, has great strength, the ability to blow hurricane force winds, telepathy, telekinesis, shapeshifting, matter transmutation, and virtually any other super-power required by the circumstances currently facing him, which, in fact was one of the criticisms against the show. Much like Superman and his kryptonite, however, Captain Planet also possesses weaknesses to pollution, radiation, toxic waste, smog, etc (In addition to Pollution, sheer hatred seems to weaken Captain Planet as well, as noted in the 6th Season Episode "A Good Bomb is Hard to Find" where Hitler's mere presence weakened him). The powers of the Planeteers' rings are also diminished by excessive pollution in the environment around them; as well as powerless when Captain Planet is made manifest. He, like Gaia, is also bound to the physical realm of Earth: while capable of flying into space, his powers -- and even his very existence -- begin to fade the further away he gets from the planet. Conversely, Captain Planet is often healed from the damage he sustains from pollution by absorbing solar energy. However, despite his abilities, even he knows that he cannot solve all the world's problems and that humans must change. Even if he were to clean up all the pollution on Earth, it would matter little if humans continued polluting.

Captain Planet is an ancient entity, who has served with Gaia for many centuries (possibly even longer). While his appearance and certain mannerisms are taken directly from the minds of the Planeteers, he is a sentient being, with his own will. He is also quite aware of current events, even those that occur when he is not active, as well as the modern world and even some knowledge of pop culture. His modern-day superhero attire and name seem to stem from the modern world, as even Gaia does not give his name in the beginning - he appears to actually name himself. Any previous names or forms were never revealed, however. Note that the story Gaia told of his being called in the 1940s just seemed to be that - a tale of fiction she used to entertain the Planeteers. A later meeting with the real Don Porkaloin gave no indication the story had been true.

Captain Planet generally does not get angry, let alone act out with intense violence. However, he may be capable of some degree of anger even if he never shows it. Especially in later seasons, his dealings with the Eco-Villains was a bit harsher, if not overly so (in No Place Like Home, instead of simply saving a drowning Doctor Blight, he opts to "sell" her a life raft for a small price - enough money to build low-cost housing for the homeless population of the city Gaia had become trapped in). Though his strength may force him to be overly cautious at times - he is strong enough to tear steel in half. He could easily injure or kill a human if he wanted to, but never would.

Though powerful, he has become depowered at least twice in the series. In one episode, when the powers of heart and earth could not return to their rings due to being in outer space; Captain Planet was re-formed with only those two rings, effectively leaving him with only the earth and heart abilities (wind is necessary to fly); this could be taken as meaning that Earth and Heart are the bare minimum requirements for his existence, with Earth representing his "body" and Heart representing his "soul". In another, when Gaia was taken from Hope Island and turned into a regular human, both Captain Planet and the rings lost their powers, leaving Captain Planet powerless and weak as a normal human. In this story, he was also forced to wear an old hat and coat taken from a dumpster to "blend in" while they searched for the missing Gaia.

I miss all the colourful, baggy rave and hip-hop clothes of the early nineties. Wearing XXXL sized orange pants was fun. Also, I miss the fact that back then all the cool teen girls could wear the same baggy clothes as guys did, and they didn't have to bare their boobs and bums. Whatever happened to unisex style?

sort of, but the oklahoma bombing didn't lead to two wars with foreign countries and america losing huge amounts of respect internationally.
i think there has definitely been a change in the tone and content of pop culture after 11/9 and iraq, but maybe not as much as after the fall of the berlin wall.

well, it was used as an excuse. i don't can't even decide whether it was an inside job or not. i think it was a far bigger deal internationally than oklahoma, nobody in the uk really talked about mcveigh even a week after it happened, it was seen as an isolated case.

I remember back in high school we had to print our own t-shirts, and a class mate of mine did one with the Windows 95 (which had just come out) logo and a "no" red circle on top of it. This movie gets to the heart of the 1990s.

The Reese Witherspoon character is torn between the influence of Marky Mark (Urban Outfitters, Nine Inch Nails) and her parents (The Gap, Microsoft). The battleground for this fight between the culture and the commodified counterculture is, of course, Seattle.

Tory Party MP (Eastleigh), Stephen Milligan – Found dead in his flat in February 1994, during the wholesome, traditional family values Conservative Government of John `Back to Basics` Major. Milligan was discovered tied to a chair, naked except for stockings and suspenders, with a plastic bag over his head and an orange stuffed into his mouth. He was believed to have accidentally asphyxiated, whilst pleasuring himself during some kind of grotesque solo bondage and self-strangulation sex act

One of the defining things about the nineties for me was that it felt like you could actually pick and choose social issues to take up, instead of feeling like you were under imminent threat of terrorist attack, dumbshit war started by your own government, end-of-civil-liberties, global warming etc.

It'll be all Gap ads, post-rock, dot-coms and Calvin Klein. or something.

This educational music video from 1991 by the Finnish Alcohol Company provides a wonderful example of early 90s cool.

The video warns teens not to have sex while drunk, btw, as they might forget to use a condom. The chorus: "sex is fun while you're sober / when you're drunk you do it the wrong way". If I'd personally followed this maxim, I'd probably had about 60% less sex in my life.

From punch-ups on the football pitch to half-hearted disagreements (which Johnny wittilly terms 'a case of the handbags'), there is plenty here to amuse and entertain.
