I liked Triksta. He was kind of weird about wanting to produce bounce music that removed all of the things he initially liked about bounce music (the tracks were posted somewhere online), but he's a good writer and was pretty honest about his love/hate relationship w/New Orleans and rap music, if I remember.

to understand it requires getting your head around the idea of mean-spirited-obnoxiousness-as-funniness not actually being the #1 reason to think someone is good. at least that is what i assume forms the basis of people's criticism. it is surely extremely obvious why Dom would be disliked by a lot of people (i haven't added them up against the number of fans tho - could be 50/50 overall).

one dude i really think is hilarious & underrated is peter de vries, this early new yorker writer who had a kinda sj perelman/billy wilder persona, all his early novels are about neurotic dudes who get in some kinda weird personal or social beef... i dunno im making it sound boring like p.g. wodehouse or something but its really crisp & relatable & funny, check 'tunnel of love' from 1954, about a cynical, literate married dude who cares as much about his kids as tom ewell in seven year itch & has an adulterous failed gag cartoonist for a best friend, its full of laughs & great screwball comedy scenes & genuine insight into the shittiness of life

i dunno. my o.g. lil wayne/birdman review before it got cut, probably. reproduced here for your amusement:
LIL WAYNE & BIRDMAN - LIKE FATHER LIKE SON (CASH MONEY RECORDS) After the departure of B.G., Juvenile, Turk, and producer Mannie Fresh, the Cash Money CEO has probably spent a lot of times on his knees in thanks that Weezy is still around. Wayne is still a Hot Boy, albeit one who likes to get his grown man on. He's eager to prove he's far from a little squirt, and he likes to rub it in constantly. Weezy's been beating off the competition for so long now it's understandable if he's feeling a little testy. A rapper with this much spunk coming out his mouth doesn't need to spend any more time boning up on his skills. But sometimes his spunk dominates "Like Father Like Son" so much it seems Birdman gets the shaft. Fortunately Stunna still has a little thug in him, and he knows when to just sit back and let Weezy do his thing. As president of Cash Money, Baby has been feeling Wayne for years now, and while his previous albums are hardcore classics, he really blows himself away on this one. In the words of Bay Area hip-hop critic Oliver Wang, new-school Lil' Wayne "sounds more confident as an MC and wields a genuinely impressive array of different styles". It's obvious Weezy is feeling Wang on this, as he bounces from naked emotion to popping shots in the span of a single track. He never lets you forget he's sitting on 20 inches, but when the lyrical rim jobs wear out he's ready to lay himself bare on an emotional tribute of "Like Father, Like Son". Weezy is a man who will bend over backwards for a hot line, and fleshes out his long arcs with violent thrusts of short diction, while never leaning on rhyming words that merely resemble each other - there's no homophones. The New Orleans hustler brings it uncut on "Over Here Hustlin", proving he knows how to handle the white stuff. But these two aren't just about pumping crack - rhymes like "call my bullets some lumps, I put 'em deep in ya neck" would be a mouthful for anyone. Stunna goes even harder on "Leather So Soft", while "Army Gunz" illustrates this pair still knows how to cock and squeeze. And on "All About That" the self-described "Fireman" continues to bring the flames over imitation Just Blaze production, proving Birdman and Wayne know how to handle spitting on organs. My only complaint is that the pair blow their load early on, and the second half of the album goes down in the process. But don't worry, there's still enough hotness here to make sure you keep coming back for more.- ETH4N P4DG3TT

Paper Trail is T.I.'s best in so many different ways. Don't get me wrong, every single album of his is superb, but Paper Trail is the single album I own whose every track is radically different to every other, yet throughout, a strong musical and emotional theme is miraculously sustained, and a progression is formed through the wildly disparate effects created by the imaginative instrumentation and HIDEOUSLY creative production involved. The tunes themselves are generally as strong as any in the T.I. oeuvre, but on this album more than others he is back up with some jawdropping realisation.
"I'm Illy" - This song was my first T.I. song, yet I spent the first 6 weeks thinking it was some really, REALLY ace New York rapper. There's no messing with this one, from its awesome chorus to its tastefully-applied gospel choir.
"Ready for Whatever" - T.I. KICKS SOME ASS. He never did this so well before, or since. The last two minutes are worth the album price alone, as Lil' Wayne and his guitar do some quite illegally delicious things.
"Live Your Life" - EVERYONE likes this song, right?
"Porn Star" - The simple 3-chord thrash to end all others. Succeeds because despite the roughness, every last detail is meticulously seen-to, eveyr crescendo and 'incidental' screech just in its right place.
"Whatever You Like" - Best song on the album. Marries a genius chord progression to one of the best virtuoso guitar-effects solos you will ever hear. And there's a brief yet brilliant keyboard solo.
"My Life Your Entertainment" - Well, there had to be ONE clunker, but it's so short that it is forgiven. It's also quite groovy, for a clunker.
"Swing Ya Rag" - THIS IS THE SOUND OF RADIOHEAD BEING BEATEN AT A GAME THEY WEREN'T EVEN BOLD ENOUGH TO PLAY
"Swagga Like Us" - OK, this one clinches the deal. An organ-led effects-splattered climb out of darkness, when it eventually explodes (orgasms) Blur have taken the very depths of your soul and smashed them over the insides of your skull. And God does it feel great.
"Dead and Gone" - Yeah, a stripped-down ballad, no effects, freakouts, or curveballs here. T.I. doesn't need to, any more. He's already done all that's needed. Some raw, unaccompanied emotion is more or less all that's left...
"Collect Call" - ...Except for the slumbering, bittersweet finale. It's a beautiful track, and spotting each layer of music peel away and then return is like watching a grandfather clock pendulum whilst half-asleep on ale. The train rides off into the sunset, and T.I. has finally released the stone-dead classic they'd always promised.
Your call.
