i knew this would be a morbius thread.

this doesn't sound very interesting

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 1 November 2007 18:10 (seventeen years ago)

hahaha Jack White as Elvis? Paul Rudd as John Lennon?? this looks AWESOME. xpost

stevie, Thursday, 1 November 2007 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

Don't know how good it'll be overall but I love the roasting of biopic conventions in the trailer, especially "Give him a minute son, Dewey Cox needs to think about his whole life before he plays," and Lennon going "With meditation there's no limit to what we can imagine."

I like Jake Kasdan, at least based on Zero Effect, Orange County was lame and I never saw The TV Set.

liking this movie might depend on how much you're entertained by stuff like this.

I hate biopics. almost as much as sports movies.

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 1 November 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

wow, can anyone even remember 'the aviator'? was there a single scene that stayed in the mind for more than a couple days?

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Thursday, 1 November 2007 18:44 (seventeen years ago)

yeah, the one where his room is full of jars of his own pee and covered in tape or whatever

THEN PERHAPS YOU MIGHT LIKE A MOVIE THAT IS MAKING FUN OF BIOPICS

huh

n/a, Thursday, 1 November 2007 18:48 (seventeen years ago)

Anyways, preview is not very good but unlike the sourpusses on this thread I will remain optimistic because it is a genre ripe for parody and I like a lot of the people involved. Thanks.

pre-empted as a critique of the Musician Horseshit Biopic by I'm Not There

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 1 November 2007 18:50 (seventeen years ago)

previews are for shit, almost universally. anything with a plot: they tell you the fucking plot. comedies give you (watered down versions of) the most obvious jokes.

good point morbs: no-one has ever spoofed the musician biopic before.

one thing that i kinda lliek about this movie is that they're casting all the "famous people" roles rather than forrest gumping it or making up composite characters.

"Dewey, I've been halved!"

latebloomer, Saturday, 8 December 2007 05:01 (seventeen years ago)

That clip definitely reaffirms what a dull director Jake Kasdan can be and that the film is too high-concept to offer the kind of non-stop riffing "from the folks that brought you Knocked Up And Superbad" implies, but I laughed enough that I'll definitely still be checking it out.

da croupier, Saturday, 8 December 2007 05:24 (seventeen years ago)

I love biopic parodies. I've been wanting to do one about Abe Lincoln forever!

"Young Abraham Gironomo Lincoln, born to a family of poor immigrant grape-squashers in Illinois wine country, heads off to battle in the Civil War and comes home a war hero. Emboldened by his newfound celebrity, he starts on a campaign for the White House, running against John Wilkes Booth, an actor-turned politician. Musical score by The Aphex Twins."

latebloomer, Friday, 21 December 2007 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

****POSSIBLE SPOILERS for you weenies***

First third and last ten minutes of this are great, but it sags HEAVILY in the middle. From right after Dewey discovers cocaine and meets Darlene right up till the rap video with the Walk Hard sample, total snore, lots of VERY unfunny bits. But the 35 minutes of this that are good make it worth seeing. Especially

***OK, this is a BIG SPOILER!!!!!! BEWARE BEWARE BEWARE*****

the WTF cameo by....GHOSTFACE!!!

No shit.

Getting tired of seeing he same eight comedic actors in every goddam movie, by the way. Jack Black, please take a vacation fer crissakes. Freaks and Geeks was great and Superbad definitely very good, but is Apatow gonna just, like, recycle the same five actors in every movie now?

j.lu, Thursday, 27 December 2007 12:33 (seventeen years ago)

I think my favorite line was "That was early Dewey, this is middle Dewey." The songs were OK but kind of the weak spot of the movie, most of them weren't very funny aside from "Let's Duet."

I dunno the fact that Disco Dewey got a whole era to himself didn't really work for me, there wasn't enough there to keep me interested. Though admittedly the same section feels much more rushed in theatrical.

You are WAAAY off man. I still believe Ferrell can come back, he's got it in him. John C. Reilly is just a pretender to the throne. Has he got the longevity and sustainability that Will Ferrell has? Anyway most people don't even know who this sucker is, viewers will go into Walk Hard expecting to see Will Ferrell and be quietly disappointed. I think Judd Apatow is playing them off against each other. The only person who could possibly match up Ferrell is Will Arnett but thats because he's got the quiet/loud/screaming thing down pat too.
Reilly is funny in his own right though, much respect. I will watch Walk Hard.

VeronaInTheClub is joking, right?

We didn't watch the director's cut but the theatrical version wasn't as funny as I hoped it would be. Also Kristin Wiig totally kicked Jenna Fischer's ass in the funny stakes.

Tim Meadows was the best thing about this movie. Dude could use a break of his own, to make up for The Ladies Man and all.

Overall it was only OK, and a bit too mean spirited in times when it should have been lighthearted. I thought Apotow and co. did a fantastic job with the music itself, and also the skewering of the various rock trends throughout the decades. If for nothing else, the film is worth seeing solely for the LSD/Brian Wilson sequence.

Pillbox, Sunday, 22 June 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah I realise that was quite an inchorent post. I want to believe Ferrell can come back and my heart does but my mind is like; yeah unlikely.

Interviewed about music. Good story:

I was at some charity event. One of these big Oscar party type of things. And I think it was a party that Elton John throws for AIDS research or whatever, and it’s one of those parties where you go in and it’s super stressful because literally any time you bump into someone it’s Tom Cruise, or Tom Hanks, or Kirk Douglas, one of those type of parties.

Yeah, one of those types of parties.
People think, oh, you’re famous, so those are your type of people. But I really don’t feel like those are my type of people. I feel like an imposter in the room whenever I’m at anything like that, or ceremonies, or whatever. Those things stress me out. But we were invited so I went with my wife, and we walk in and we’re starving because we’d already been to a few other things before we had gotten there. So we’re like, “Let’s just get some food, and not freak out and try to talk to every single person we see. Let’s just get food, calm down, eat, and see if we know anyone here.” So we get big plates of food, and we’re looking for somewhere to sit. Everywhere was full, but we spotted two spots.

So we go and sit down and I slide over with my big plate of food and my wife sits next to me and I take a big bite of prime rib, and I turn, and I’m literally shoulder to shoulder with Elton John. He’s like, *adopts British Elton John voice*, “Oh, you’ve decided to sit down next to me with your plate of food.” And I was like, “Oh, FUCK! God damnit. This is not how I wanted this to go!” But I was starving, and it was like, what’s more awkward? Getting up with a plate of food and walking away? Or just trying to just calmly eat your food and at some point mid-plate full, I said something like, “I’m a huge fan.” And he was just like, “Oh, well, of course.” Like, yeah, that’s obvious, every single person says that to me almost every day.

That was a pretty good read. I wished they'd talked about the Beatles scene because that really killed me. It was strange to have a major studio produce a movie that was such an acute parody. If you had a system where you rated movies based on how good you expected them to be vs. how good they actually were, I think this would be my highest rated movie ever.

TS The Students vs. The Regents (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 31 May 2019 14:52 (six years ago)

I saw Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time recently and was expecting it to be dumb as hell, but still couldnt believe how much of it seemed to be deleted/alternate scenes from Walk Hard. Observation in the article about how everyone who enters a room in these movies is immediately a major character is hilariously spot on. In Bohemian I laughed particularly hard at the dad character, like his entrance is literally him walking through a door wearing a suit after a long hard day of 'business' and immediately telling his son to give up his dreams. Everything is so absurdly rushed and compressed.

I know Walk Hard bombed but some part of me still hoped it had maybe contributed to that genre dying out, cant believe we are going to be subjected to yet another cycle of these horrible films.

I’ve rewatched this movie twice this year. It’s amazing how they successful nail and skewer so many music biopic cliches while still pulling off some of the emotional notes those cliches try to hit! The songs strike a balance between straight-up goofing on artists and repurposing musical styles to the point where they might be real songs — and you realize how silly some of the cultural touchstones they’re evoking are when put out of context.

One Eye Open is otm that somehow Bohemian Rhapsody came out years later and somehow managed to use all the same cliches again, but in an insanely sanitized way because it’s a family movie
