Hasn't been done, so if anyone should do it, it might as well be me.

Trayce, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:35 (eighteen years ago)

I am expecting a close fight betwixt Fry and Bender.

Trayce, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:36 (eighteen years ago)

Zoidberg x 1000

remy bean, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I love that incompetent tentacle-faced quack.

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:42 (eighteen years ago)

I don't remember where I heard it (mighta been here) that one of the extras on the new DVD movie is going to be a full length episode of "Everybody Loves Hypnotoad"

Oilyrags, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:44 (eighteen years ago)

I've heard that too, I think I read Cohen saying it? And he said "no I'm serious!" which had me worried haha.

Trayce, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:45 (eighteen years ago)

Me, I voted for Bender of course :D He wins for the scene where he eats the Olestra chips and shits a pile of bricks =)

Trayce, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:48 (eighteen years ago)

Zoidberg all the way.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 04:52 (eighteen years ago)

coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee coffee COFFEE

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 05:34 (eighteen years ago)

There was a girl I knew whom everybody went on and on about how gorgeous she was. I was unconvinced until she did a spontaneous zoidberg impression (making claw motions and going "woop woop woop...") at a party once and it all made sense.

I like how everybody hates Zoidberg for no reason. "with my last breath...I curse you Zoidberg!!!"

Still not sure which character is my favourite. This poll calls for intense contemplation.

Gukbe, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:49 (eighteen years ago)

Hermes is a waste of celluloid.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:54 (eighteen years ago)

yeah i don't particularly like hermes. zoidberg wins, then bender

electricsound, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 07:59 (eighteen years ago)

seconded

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:06 (eighteen years ago)

Zoidberg, then Farnsworth. Farnsworth totally has the best one-liners. Hence the thread title.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:10 (eighteen years ago)

Hermes has his moments ("sweet something of something"). Someone should do the minor characters poll then I could vote for Zapp.

Ned Trifle II, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:42 (eighteen years ago)

I am amazed by all the zoidberg love!

Trayce, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

And you better believe I'd vote for Zapp in a minor chars poll.

Then again, there's Mom...

Trayce, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

How can anyone not vote for Bender? I mean, come on, he has a shiny metal ass! And a required alcohol level!

StanM, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 08:46 (eighteen years ago)

Man, he's not just my favourite Futurama character, he's my favourite TV character of all time.

ledge, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 09:35 (eighteen years ago)

Hermes's existence is singlehandedly justified by the episode where they go to Central Bureaucracy.

That said, I'm still voting for either Bender or Zoidberg.

bernard snowy, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:11 (eighteen years ago)

yeah me too. zoidberg or bender, tough call.

Roz, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:12 (eighteen years ago)

Farnsworth, though I was hard pressed not to click Zoidberg.

melton mowbray, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 11:23 (eighteen years ago)

Easily Bender over everyone.

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

No Leela/Amy fans then?

StanM, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:13 (eighteen years ago)

Apparently no Fry fans either! You are ALL WRONG.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:14 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know how any character could "easily" be the best because they're all SO good. the only "easily" i can imagine is for the minor characters because kiff (kif?) is so amazing

Will M., Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

I almost voted for Leela!

HI DERE, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:18 (eighteen years ago)

Fry: But I know you in the future. I cleaned your poop.
Nibbler: Quite possible. We live long and are celebrated poopers.

and what, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:31 (eighteen years ago)

Fry: Incredible! This place is just like the ancient Egypt of my day.
Slave Driver: That is no coincidence, for our people visited your Egypt thousands of years ago.
Fry: I knew it! Insane theories, one; regular theories, a billion.

and what, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:32 (eighteen years ago)

i don't know how any character could "easily" be the best because they're all SO good. the only "easily" i can imagine is for the minor characters because kiff (kif?) is so amazing

I just wanted to write, "Easily bender over."

Michael White, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:33 (eighteen years ago)

Bender: Congratulations Fry, you've snagged the perfect girlfriend. Amy's rich, she's probably got other characteristics…
Leela: Bender! Romance isn't about money!
Bender: Oh, so it's just coincidence that Zoidberg here is desperately poor and miserably lonely? Please!
Leela: For your information, it's because he's hideous!
Dr. Zoidberg: Awww.

and what, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:36 (eighteen years ago)

my fave image from the eps I saw was the giant mechanical spider bringing baseball pitchers in from the bullpen.

Dr Morbius, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:44 (eighteen years ago)

blernsball pitchers, you mean.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

it's set in the future.

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:45 (eighteen years ago)

My fave throwaway visual gag is still the "Hell is Other Robots" pamphlet.

kingfish, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:48 (eighteen years ago)

Zoidberg claws down

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

There's an episode where Hermes is introduced as a Rastafarian accountant and he says "Tally me Banana?" and it cracks me up. But I voted for Bender, of course.

Trip Maker, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:49 (eighteen years ago)

i voted bender too.
briefly considered amy on account of my wanting to have freaky 'toon sex with her.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:50 (eighteen years ago)

Dr. Blue Zoidberg: So, tell me about yourself.
Dr. Zoidberg: Well don't look into it, but i'm a respectful internal medicine doctor. Uuh.. a can!
Dr. Blue Zoidberg: As for me i design mansions, then live in them. (Crying) I'm lying. I'm an apalling failure!
Dr. Zoidberg: Me too! A big fat one.
Dr. Blue Zoidberg: And those co-workers, always looking down on us Zoidbergs. What are they? From Nobhill?
Dr. Zoidberg: They're all like "Stop spraying me with ink Zoidberg!" "Put on pants Zoidberg!" "Don't touch our fancy box Zoidberg"!
Dr. Blue Zoidberg: Uuh that box. Too good for us, is it?
Dr. Zoidberg: Bah! Some day they'll watch, from down in the gutter they will, as King Zoidberg caresses their fancy box!
Dr. Blue Zoidberg: You know, maybe a certain blue lobster saw where the Professor hid the box.

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:55 (eighteen years ago)

In a minor character poll I'm voting for Morbo about a million billion times

Elvis Telecom, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

KAPPA KAPPA WONG

nabisco, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:15 (eighteen years ago)

Bender: Wait, I've got it. Professor, make a woman out of me!
Professor: Oh I think we should just stay friends.

nickalicious, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:16 (eighteen years ago)

"How's the family, Morbo?"

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:17 (eighteen years ago)

"Belligerent and numerous."

ledge, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:18 (eighteen years ago)

Morbo: Morbo cannot read his teleprompter. He forgot how to spell that letter that looks like a man wearing a hat.
Linda the Newsanchor: That is a T. It's pronounced "Thuh."
Morbo: Hello, tiny man. I will destroy you!

ledge, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

The reason I can't vote Bender in good conscience is he's too obviously supposed to be the funniest. He's the Hawkeye Pierce of Futurama. Except for that one episode where they had an actual robot Hawkeye.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

Oh blithery poop, my cowardly lobster. You don't need courage. After all, who needs courage when you have a gun?

nickalicious, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:19 (eighteen years ago)

Everybody Loves Hypnotoad

Shakey Mo Collier, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:20 (eighteen years ago)

the hypnotoad makes the coolest noise I've ever heard on television

El Tomboto, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 17:59 (eighteen years ago)

in a minor character poll I would go for Nixon without a doubt.

The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 19:14 (eighteen years ago)

I would have voted Bender but I figured he didn't need my vote so I went for Farnsworth.

The robot cop would do well in a minor characters poll, I feel.

Matt, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 20:06 (eighteen years ago)

Though I think I'd vote Nixon, tbh

I'm sure the Hypnotoad noise is from somewhere else before F'rama, but I can't for the life of me place it.

I don't think its Star Trek (unlike virtually all the other sound effects)

Linda: “The sheer drama of this election has driven voter turnout to it’s highest level in centuries, six percent.”
Morbo: “Exit poll show evil underdog Richard Nixon trailing with estimated zero votes.”
Linda: “The time is 7:59 and the robot polls are now opening. And robot votes are now in. Nixon has won.”
Morbo: “Morbo congratulates our gargantuan cyborg president. May death come quickly to his enemies.”

Elvis Telecom, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

I'm too scared to start a minor chars poll now because I've realised I won't be able to decide between Morbo, Mom, and Zapp.

Zoidberg must win this.

Oilyrags, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

I always thought that if I was a writer on this show, whenever the character's needed something, I'd send them to a big-box store with a name that riff's on the show's title:

Liquor Store: Hoocherama
Emergency Room: Suturama
Short Term Loans: Moocherama
Whorehouse: Coocherama
Dog Breeder: Poocherama

etc.

ledge, Saturday, 10 November 2007 00:43 (eighteen years ago)

There are other ethnic references in Dr. Zoidberg's character. These allusions combine to suggest the culture of Ashkenazi Jewish people. His surname sounds as if it could be of German extraction, because berg is German for mountain and is a common suffix for German surnames, including those of German Jewish-folk. Zoidberg is a crustacean, and crustaceans are not kosher according to Judaism, which adds an extra layer of humor to Dr. Zoidberg’s character. On one occasion he is refused entry to a Bot Mitzvah reception (“No shellfish!”). On the other hand, humans, including Jewish-folk, are not kosher (to eat), so in a sense this is not so remarkable.

The other Decapodians seen on the show, such as Zoidberg’s Uncle Harold (voiced by the Simpsons' Hank Azaria) and the staff at the Decapodian embassy in Washington D.C. speak with very heavy Yiddish accents. The staff at the Decapodian embassy also use Yiddish words like "schlep," and the secretary is an example of a caring Jewish mother. His great uncle was a great Hollywood actor who changed his name to Harold Zoid, a reference to actors changing their names to make them sound less Jewish. In the episode "The Deep South" Fry tells Zoidberg they couldn't be seen together as Fry is "trying to join the country club" (although this could just be due to Zoidberg's extreme poverty and other severe deficiencies).

In Fry and the Slurm Factory, Zoidberg is shown in the gift-shop of the Slurm soft drink factory wearing a t-shirt featuring the word "שׂלוּרם", which could be pronounced as "Slurm" in Hebrew. This parodies the Hebrew Coca-Cola t-shirts sold as souvenirs in the Jewish state of Israel. A more standard transliteration of "Slurm" into Hebrew would be "סלרם". The DVD commentary to the episode makes clear that the creators were unaware of this, as they lament the unavoidable similarity of their spelling to that of the Hebrew word for peace, "שׁלוֹם".

ZOIDBERG IS THE WINNER! HOORAY FOR ZOIDBERG!

So I've finally been watching this recently, after years of having it hyped to me and going "Ehh, I watched the first couple when they came out and wasn't into it." But it really does get good! First season gets its stride with only a couple of outright duds (the college episode was terrible whenever it got away from the monkey), second season was basically perfect I think. Now I'm in the third and it feels like a step down - - the jokes are still really funny but somehow it feels like there's fewer jokes per minute. Is it just that I've watched too much of it in a short time or do other people get that impression? And if I stick it out, will my faith be rewarded?

poll results totally OTM btw - - - this is almost exactly how I'd rank them myself, although I think Fry's a little underrated here...

I found this on a random search and had almost forgot i'd started it. Flatmate N pointed out that Fry is the whole POINT of the show, which is a good... point. He is, of course. He's the reason the show exists, he saves the universe (more than once?). I identify with him for his persistent Leela-love more than I should.

And yet I wouldnt call him my fave? I wonder if I ever did do that minor character poll...

I recently re-watched the four original season and all the characters are just so, so great, but Zoidberg really is amazing. Everyone's hatred for him is only matched by his often aggressive desperation for friendship. ("You may have lost the woman of your dreams, Fry, but you still have your old pal Zoidberg. (Angrily) You ALL still have Zoidberg!")

I think my favorite minor character may be Roberto. "Hand over your skin!"

Still can't believe that's the voice of Michael Bolton from Office Space.

Man, I bogged down a while back trying to catch up on this show. Was really digging it, then a little less, then a little more...then I hit the "movie" season and really lost the flow completely. "Bender's Big Score" had some great bits, "Beast With A Billion Backs" was a little weaker, and now I just watched "Bender's Game" and it was baaaaad, just the worst kind of unfunny gimmicky filler movie you might expect if you'd never seen the show and heard they did some direct-to-DVD spinoff movies, y'know?

So my question is - is it worth pressing on? If so, should I even screw around with "Into The Wild Green Yonder," or just skip on to the post-comeback seasons? Or would I get more laughs from rewatching seasons 2-4?

Doctor Casino, Friday, 10 May 2013 05:01 (twelve years ago)

I disliked Bender's Game too, Wild Green Yonder I think is a lot better if not as good as the first two. I found the season that followed worth watching, albeit with that pattern of diminishing returns continuing, but the most recent mini-season I usually felt I was watching out of some odd obligation rather than anything resembling anticipation or enjoyment.

ohmigud (Merdeyeux), Friday, 10 May 2013 12:10 (twelve years ago)

a lot of the recent episodes have that slightly fan fic-style nerdy overcookedness that I think is what you were feeling from Bender's Game, really going hard on topical satire and parody in a way far removed from the clever and selective way the show used to do it.

ohmigud (Merdeyeux), Friday, 10 May 2013 12:14 (twelve years ago)

Hmmm, yeah, that's not so compelling. Bender's Game really felt like a sub-tier Family Guy thing or a Holodeck episode, you know? Our heroes in costumes from another genre! Wait til you see how they've dressed up Mom! etc...

Straight up skipped Wild Green Yonder and the following season is just great! Sometimes the plots are a little too cutesy for their own good (the episode of cat jokes, the iPhone one) or staggeringly sexist in the case of "In-a-Gadda-da-Leela" - but the dialogue gags have never been better IMO.

"But you've got nothing!"
"Oh no? I've got one single nail. And another nail to nail it in with. And I'm gonna stop this infernal ice-cream machine, once and for all!"

Doctor Casino, Sunday, 9 June 2013 06:26 (twelve years ago)

of the four movies, wild green yonder is by far the best. definitely worth watching, imo. i liked beast with a billion backs, too, to a lesser extent.

series really fan-ficced itself to death starting with those long movies

Szechuan TV (Noodle Vague), Saturday, 27 February 2016 08:06 (nine years ago)

yeah the movies were a bit of a low point esp that one. redeemed by the last seasons tho. The Late Phillip J Fry is brilliant.

Interesting. No, wait, the other thing: tedious. (Trayce), Saturday, 27 February 2016 22:39 (nine years ago)

The three before "Wild Green" aren't bad, I thought! I gave up on Futurama before its first last season because I wasn't finding it funny anymore; I've been rewatching it in order from the pilot on Netflix and there were still a lot of duds before the one where Fry gets the Devil's hands, but as for as lols per minute, the movies are borderline very good (first two especially).

For some reason this old story bubbled up to the top of Vulture today. I think I caught the 6502 processor gag, but the rest I missed. Actually surprised I didn't catch Nibbler's shadow or Grover Cleveland's two heads.

Could just be negotiation hardball, but it's been reported that DiMaggio hasn't signed up yet to return as Bender, and they are considering replacements.

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 10 February 2022 03:27 (three years ago)

conspiracy theory: they've written all of the "cancellations" into the script. dimaggio's on board, they're just hyping it.

also from wiki:

On October 14, 2021, Sagal was hit by a car while crossing a street in Los Angeles. She was transported by ambulance to a local hospital where she was released the next day

seems she made it out okay, but jeez.

DiMaggio:

Hi, I’ve been thinking about everything that’s been going on these past months and just to be clear, I don’t think only I deserve to be paid more. I think the entire cast does. Negotiations are a natural part of working in show business. Everyone has a different strategy & different boundaries. Their “price.” Some accept offers, some hold their ground. Bender is part of my soul & nothing about this is meant to be disrespectful to the fans or my Futurama family. It’s about self respect. And honestly, being tired of an industry that’s become far too corporate and takes advantage of artists’ time & talent.

Look, I wish I could give you every detail so you would understand, but it’s not my place. Thanks again for the love everyone. Still hoping for the best. In the meantime I’ll be in New Orleans shooting Interview With A Vampire for AMC—and very grateful to be! Thanks…

So ... he wanted more money.

only ten episodes? wow this was a total bust. the last episode was _easily_ the highlight and really the only one that felt anywhere near the calibre of even the previous season.

I've only watched about half of them so far, there's at least one good joke in each one. Damning with faint praise but it's still better than Disenchanted.

you know a fun way to make re-watching even better? pretend zapp brannigan is a sarcastic embellishment of donald trump the whole time.

seriously, doesn't "i find the most erotic part of the woman is the boobies" sound like just a step removed from one of trump's creepy non-sequitors?
