subthread for exploding minds re: make a post in the style of the poster above you

i can't deal with that thread!
it is making my brains come out my ears a bit

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

this is where comments go that can't go on that thread b/c of its gigantic metaness

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:54 (eighteen years ago)

abbott's post re: scott made me laugh

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:55 (eighteen years ago)

That thread makes me seem like I'm autistic.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

notable for how few posters have a recognizable style

milo z, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

do we have to make our metathread metacomments in the style of the poster above?

stet, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

pretty impressive that the posters involved have managed to keep it so jovial and not be dicks which is what I thought would've happened by now

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

I guess when having other people do impersonations of you it's also easier to let anything that might seem mean-spirited roll off your back. Plus impersonation doesn't come as cheap as a zing, it seems more affectionate

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:01 (eighteen years ago)

Also, you can't refute anything unless you do it in the style of the poster above you.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

I was non-offended but disappointed at the poor quality of imitations of me. I mean, cut-and-paste, talk about phoning it in.

nabisco, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

by the time we wrote a full nabisco impression someone else would have posted

deej, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

i posted three times and respect everyone i copied... in retrospect i should have stayed off because making someone try to emulate someone as non-present on these boards as me is pretty mean, and, in a way, thread-killing (although anyone who has paid attention would probably note my absurdly long sentences made worse only by the fact that they are not run-on sentences and filled with brackets, allowing a sort of sentence-within-sentence structure that successfully sticks it to periods everywhere).

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

also, i at least used the wikipedia entry for "fashion" so it was related to an interest of yours xp

deej, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:03 (eighteen years ago)

That would have been the best part of the impression, Deej -- that always happens to me!

I think we did this once before, but it's actually more interesting to see if people can match the tone of people's one-line jokes and offhand comments, compared to when people posted at length and everyone knew stuff about everyone.

nabisco, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

I did it with BRACKETS. deej otm.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

That's been the hardest part with that thread, dealing with the x-posts. It's like the horror that is improv.

And you know, chaki, I don't work at a radio station anymore. You can ask jaymc for further details.

Pleasant Plains, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

I don't know or care enough about most ilxors to accurately impersonate them

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:04 (eighteen years ago)

just seems like lazy zings

jergïns, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

My jaymc was a cheap caricature so I didn't mean to make you sound autistic dude.

I didn't really get mine.

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:05 (eighteen years ago)

hahahaha I am so not posting to that thread

HI DERE, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, Tom's Cosby reference redeems all imitations of me, I am satisfied now.

nabisco, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

more like lazy homages, really xxxp

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

i am surprised anybody remembers the nekkid underwear picture of me @ 18 -- it hasn't been posted in about 3 years, if i am correct.

remy bean, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

I wanted to play but I didn't know who anyone was. But I was curious to see what people put for me because I don't think I have a "style" or whatever, John cheated by just doing an imitation of me trying to annoy Dr. Morbius, which I guess is kind of my style now.

n/a, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:07 (eighteen years ago)

actually my style: "or whatever," "I guess," "kind of"

n/a, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

i just stuck it to this thread again, haha. have fun not posting on it anymore nerds!

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Dan M did an impersonation of you, Will, that I can only guess is because you both frequent NHL threads.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

wait that is also my style!
xpost to na

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

I am so not posting in that thread.

Laurel, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

What Dan and Laurel said.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

basically that thread confuses and confounds me re: 'style', 'character', 'stereotype' and levels of the world

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

thread moves too fast and most posters don't have an easily mimic-able "style" anyway

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

I'm gonna have to quit because I make it too easy when I post

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

I can't post in that thread because I don't actually read anyone elses posts, which probably explains a lot about my posting style.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:11 (eighteen years ago)

I had a really good one for Rrrrobyn, but then someone beat me to the punch and now it's lost to the mists of time.

jaymc, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

just a bit of fun, be cool

n/a, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

All I have to do is slip up once and it's "HAW HAW MASSIVE COCK!" for everyone.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

Haha, yeah, jaymc, that is probably why. It got a warm giggle out of me which is really all we can hope for from a thread like that! Although the NHL treads have gone woefully unnoticed for quite some time. I think Scott ignored my name and just responded to my question-as-tom, though! this is xxxxxxxxxxp btw

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

throw him a bone rrrob

chaki, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:12 (eighteen years ago)

I already broke down. Someone totally LAMED off Jordan earlier and just flopped on "something about drumming" which was fucking lazy and inattentive.

Laurel, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

omg n/a, wth

HI DERE, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:13 (eighteen years ago)

that WHOLE THREAD is lazy and inattentive

max, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

I'm...a leprechaun?

Laurel, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

there needs to be a five minute wait time between posts

max, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

what, doesn't everyone else imagine laurel as a leprauchan 24/7?

n/a, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

no ... just me?

n/a, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

ok.

n/a, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:14 (eighteen years ago)

Laurel, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

chaki, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

You know I'm not Irish, right?

Laurel, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

and GOD sorry i tried to start a fun thread everyone. SHEEESH.

chaki, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

I am beside myself with perplexed laughter.

HI DERE, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)

I thought n/a's leprechaun post was totally hilarious
but mostly because my sense of humor is generally dissociative and insane

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

"gree hee hee hee!"

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:16 (eighteen years ago)

Yes, that part is cracking me up too. Especially the "gree" part.

Laurel, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

the thread would be funnier if they were all like n/a's and no one could figure out what the fuck was going on

max, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

i've definitely seen this style of thread done on other sites before, but not on other ILx boards... but also this is the best version of it i've ever seen. a lot of people have enough of a persona on this board that there's a point, almost.

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:18 (eighteen years ago)

I just got shit on by the force of lurker xpost

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:19 (eighteen years ago)

Hahahaha that was exactly right, though!

HI DERE, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

hahahaha awesome

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

lol @ u guys upset about the "laziness" of the thread. ME THINKS U R TAKING THIS A BIT TOO SERIOUSLY (max).

chaki, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:24 (eighteen years ago)

maybe u just bitter cuz u aint got no style to emulate?

chaki, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

max is just pissed because he got "this movie was filmed at my school" which I admit was the first thing I thought of too even though max is cooler than that.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:25 (eighteen years ago)

Those jigs Laurel dances are Scots, I'd have thought.

Michael White, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

i like the thread! i just can't really deal with it v well!

rrrobyn, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

having "movie filmed at my school" as the lazy zing >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> "screen name is BIG HOOS" >>>>>>>>>>>>> "called lil wayne 'svelte'" >>>>>>>>>>>>> "got beat off by a dude"

(not actually mad abt the lazy thing just want to seem smarter than everyone else)

max, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

that thread makes me realize how little attention i've paid to any quasi-recent ilx people

^@^, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

if you do not know someones style i suggest not posting as that person.

chaki, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:30 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'm too uptight to have a style.

Alba, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

They are teh Scotessses, yes, but what's funnier is that Nick knows someone IN CHICAGO who studies actual Irish dance.

Laurel, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:31 (eighteen years ago)

nick, you definitely have a style.

^@^, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:33 (eighteen years ago)

I think I'm too uptight to have a style.

This is like saying "I smell too much like pizza to have a scent."

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

s1ocki is posting a lot and i don't know his style at all

Just got offed, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

slocki's one of the most discernible posters on all of ilx!

^@^, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

^@^ otm, my only problem is that i suck at emulating it!

Will M., Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

I'm also avoiding that thred, I think I'm too vague and boring to be considered to have a style.

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:39 (eighteen years ago)

i like this thread. it's like the other thread's green room.

^@^, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:40 (eighteen years ago)

Umm Jordan it was just kind of meta -- that Homer Simpsony way of imitating people where you're all "ooo, look at me, I'm JOHN, look at my stupid ... SHOES, and my stupid ... FACE, aren't I so special"

nabisco, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 22:44 (eighteen years ago)

My Nabisco one was going to be...

Haha but so the thing that's so deeply weird about this thread is that even though each post isn't necessarily an accurate representation of each poster, it still strikes this awesomely-felt note, like in that one episode of Girlfriends when Mo'Nique guest-starred. Which, again, don't get me wrong here, is an argument for the serial comma.

I wrote a Louis one and then I got beated to the punch (this is all in good fun, Louis, I hope you don't mind me poking fun at your romantic aspirations):

It appears my most recent lady love has chosen to decline my propositions, which I posed to her in a thoroughly convincing eight-page free verse poem that served as a delightful dual metaphor for both my carnal desires and the downfall of the British Empire, particularly the situation in India. I'd be more inclined to shake off this rejection if the football scores were better. Alas!

I just almost posted a "gree hee hee hee" thread on Aeon Flux Top Level, but that barb e woman scares me.

John Justen, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:27 (eighteen years ago)

:p it wasn't JUST for sports despair!

Just got offed, Wednesday, 7 November 2007 23:29 (eighteen years ago)

when that thread first started i posted without thinking about how i would be zinged... BIG MISTAKE. i was *somewhat* mortified. meh - i'll get over it. less mortified since it was only gr8080.

jessie monster's LJ post: brilliance!! pity it didn't make to the actual thread. that thread is remaining incredibly good-natured considering its length.

Rubyredd, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

El Tomboto, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:53 (eighteen years ago)

Will you shut the fuck up and tell me in plain English how we're going to fix this fucking country?

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Thursday, 8 November 2007 00:57 (eighteen years ago)

It appears my most recent lady love has chosen to decline my propositions, which I posed to her in a thoroughly convincing eight-page free verse poem that served as a delightful dual metaphor for both my carnal desires and the downfall of the British Empire, particularly the situation in India. I'd be more inclined to shake off this rejection if the football scores were better. Alas, and then I wanked a dude off.

Fixed.

Dom Passantino, Thursday, 8 November 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:00 (eighteen years ago)

Aw. I was really hoping tittitats would have some legs.

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:01 (eighteen years ago)

Is tittitats the new vajayjays?

Noodle Vague, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:02 (eighteen years ago)

(Also NV, I watched my first NFL game of the season last week yet I still fully endorse several teams so actually watching is optional in my book.)

Tittitats could be the new vajayjay, depending on your doctor.

HI DERE, Thursday, 8 November 2007 23:03 (eighteen years ago)

Cockburn's, Louis? Tsk. Warre's at a stretch. And quite a stretch at that.

Matt, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:05 (eighteen years ago)

You're not a port-souser? Shame. Perhaps I too will grow out of it with ripening maturity.

Just got offed, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:16 (eighteen years ago)

i like tacobell

CaptainLorax, Friday, 9 November 2007 01:17 (eighteen years ago)

???

n/a, Friday, 9 November 2007 03:02 (eighteen years ago)

I've noticed at times you say "i'm done" or "that's it" or "i'm out".

Look, I have a Mac, so Excel doesn't even work for me. I'm not disagreeing that it was a stretch.

Pleasant Plains, Friday, 9 November 2007 03:51 (eighteen years ago)

Can anyone find the old ILE thread where we imitated other posters? I tried to find it. It was good.

Sundar, Friday, 9 November 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

dr. c was a genius on that thread.

estela, Friday, 9 November 2007 04:10 (eighteen years ago)

i am NEVER done

n/a, Friday, 9 November 2007 13:38 (eighteen years ago)

this is the thread where you impersonate other ilxors

jaymc, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Pretty sure there was one before that, though.

jaymc, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:14 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I was thinking of an even earlier one, from the 'classic' era.

Sundar, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

(Thanks though.)

Sundar, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:28 (eighteen years ago)

I remember there was a really good impression of Tom E by Pinefox.

Sundar, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:29 (eighteen years ago)

Ilxor Impressions (be nice!)

jaymc, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:45 (eighteen years ago)

Summarise Me!

jaymc, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

The really big one is IL* Challenge!

Matt DC, Friday, 9 November 2007 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

How do you guys find these things? Do you have a good memory for thread names or is there another way to look things up? I'm impressed in any case. I <3 ILx.

What's funny is that this was a spot-on impression of Jess in 2002:

me me me. do me, someone! oh Tom, Tom - i've just e-mailed you. about c-90 go!: i'm sorry i'm taking so long over this!!! but it'll be worth it you'll see! i have a seventh article in the works too, about You Know What: i really think this EP is the perfect compromise between Low Birth Weight and Geogra-doggido. i’m sure i can get to the "heart" of what the record is "about". my take is gonna be that it nods towards industrial/electronic "bliss-out" that even BoC at their most reserved cannot yet do, the ethereal yet rhythmic "minimalism" of recent drum and bass, and the arch confessionals of Nick Cave.

Tom, what about that Lambchop album, then? what's that like? oh yes, my article - sorry, real life keeps getting in the way, but that's more important anyway. i think i shall say it’s "hop on"-pop in the best Les Savy Fav tradition, all swirling chords and the sound of distant drums. "wayward funk-rock", no less - equal parts Parliament, Jim Reeves and The Cramps. whaddyathink? Tom, you haven't replied to my e-mail yet. i'm hurt. i'm hurt in my heart.

I believe "Summarise Me" was the one I was looking for. Ah, the old days when we all tried to write long, clever, sophisticated posts. That thread worked better when you could see people's email addresses though. The impression of Tom E I mentioned:

There’s three variants of this game actually: the one where you have to explain what someone else’s schtick is (= quite boring so DUD), the one where you have to adopt another poster’s style (= CLASSIC as above posts prove), and the one where you have to mix the subject matter of one poster with the style of yet another poster (= probably CLASSIC, but very hard).

Really it’s a way of understanding other people’s points of view better by understanding their language I suppose. Not that understanding DJ Martian’s language will help ;)

Dr C doing Mark S is the best post on any of these threads.

Matt DC, Friday, 9 November 2007 15:36 (eighteen years ago)

i hate this thread because it takes the urge to be oh-so-clever-clever that underpins many of ilx's worst impulses and turns it against ourselves

You're not a port-souser?

on the contrary, I am a committed and regular drinker. My point was largely : Cockburns? Ehhh

Matt, Friday, 9 November 2007 21:09 (eighteen years ago)

Fair play. I shall seek to expand my oeuvre beyond such hackneyed and vulgar juices.
