I think it comes down to their best films being about MORE than just the caricatures (which, its true, are in every movie) - you know, Lebowski is a goof on the Big Sleep, Miller's Crossing is Hammett, Hudsucker is Hepburn-style screwball comedy, etc. But the reason I singled out Raising Arizona is because it doesn't have any subtext or even any real external reference points - its just wall-to-wall "laugh at the yokels" gags.

they do have a pretty miserable view of human connectivity -- in all their movies communication is as hopeless and self serving as in mamet. how that relates to 'stereotype' i dunno, haven't thought that through.

all the not listening in big lebowski drives me crazy - i dont understand how people can watch it over and over

― deej, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 22:15 (eighteen years ago)
all their movies are like that! nobody ever gets through to anybody else... that's the big tragedy of 'miller's crossing' frex.
the mishearing and repetition are funny in lebowski, my favorite screenwriterly trick is how often he picks up other people's phrases w/o any real content or intent coming along w/ it

yes in fact i did watch that movie. being a murderer doesn't seem that tragic, in context. what i mean is: the elaborate flip floppy plot is all about a dude tied up in the masculine gangster codes so that at every turn it's impossible for him to end up with the woman he really loves (and who in fact loves him)

Consider this list:
Halle Berry Scarlett Johanssen Salma Hayek Angelina Jolie Kate Beckensale
She is rather clearly the least hot woman on this list, but THAT DOES NOT MEAN SHE IS NOT HOT.
Also, living in a college town will quickly disabuse you of the stereotype that college girls are hot. College girls haven't showered for three days and are rolling into lecture in their pajamas.
― HI DERE, Tuesday, 13 November 2007 23:20 (eighteen years ago)

-scarjo is hot, but probably vapid (bummer!) -pearl harbor is the worst movie i've ever seen, but then again so was battlefield earth, and it was improved by w33d (college!!!!!), so maybe i should give PH another chance. i remember the whole movie looking like a propaganda poster. -someone OTM re: halle berry w/long hair -also, TOMBOT otm re: seeing chicks as hot as beckinsdale at DJ night/country and western bar. ffs go hang out in a small town in the midwest sometime. "that waitress" actually does exist. -i liked TBL, but dislike TBL fanboys. generally a pretty funny movie, tho! -saw intolerable cruelty, don't remember much, thought it was ok funny -never saw TMWWT -will go on record as enjoying Oh Brother -really, really like Fargo, if only for lol home joeks -the fifteen or so minutes i saw of the island were o_O in their badness, wtf are you guys on about
― gbx, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 02:29 (eighteen years ago)
i've actually seen Man on Fire like 5 times (visiting parents + unemployed + HBO + mild insomnia), and felt compelled to watch simply because it's such a grotesquely over the top revenge fantasy. and the words on the screen??? all the fucking time???? tony scott, ugh

BHD I have watched about 15 times and will probably watch a few more, even though I have lots better war movies. it's just so visually amazing and fun to sit there and monday morning quarterback the whole operation and how fucked it was from before they even started up the humvees (albeit with several adult beverages down the hatch)
Man on Fire, frankly, seems like the much less honest red state sociopath fantasy, and for that reason alone I'm not a fan of it. also, not enough walken.
― El Tomboto, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 03:23 (eighteen years ago)
-- El Tomboto, Wednesday, November 14, 2007 3:23 AM
It's absolutely a 10,000 jiggawat over-the-top sociopathic mercenary revenge fantasy. It's Death Wish with color-saturation. I don't cheer when Denzel kills the bad guys, but it's an interesting insight into the "red state sociopath" mindset.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 03:26 (eighteen years ago)
also I've repped for it on about a dozen threads but I really think Kingdom Of Heaven is probably the best thing Ridley Scott has done since Blade Runner and that seems highly unlikely to change

If only Blount were here to back me up on Man on Fire. It is insane and horrible, but it's like listening to GG Allin or particularly egregious rap. You don't have to agree with it to have your mind blown.
Black Hawk Down is almost unwatchable. Cloud of war, battle confusion, etc. yeah yeah yeah but Christ it's just not very interesting to watch whip-pans back and forth between characters you don't really know or have a reason to care about (except for Tom Sizemore, of course). Edited a little more rationally, it might have been good.
― milo z, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 06:10 (eighteen years ago)
Shooter is very fun. Sniper seemed stupid (that's the movie where one guy's warned not to let any pee escape into the river or evil amoeba will swim up his urethra, right), but I might give it a chance on cable.
Master & Commander is tite.
― milo z, Wednesday, 14 November 2007 06:11 (eighteen years ago)

xp not the CONTENT of the dialogue, but the hamminess! especially merry/pippen dude. there was lots of exaggerated mugging and oh my how british sorts of stuff going on. also, HOLD FAST dude was a cartoon and having him actually say "hold fast" all the time was a little smarmy
