I've been drinking Miller Lite lately, I need to give a better pilsner a try.

milo z, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

c'mon, no one buys natural light

mookieproof, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

Although, for acidic water, it's not as bad as it could be.

milo z, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:21 (eighteen years ago)

that was re: Miller Lite

oh, contraire, I know a house full of dudes who drink nothing but Natty Light.

More surprised that Busch Light made the list - I haven't seen anyone drink a Busch-branded product the first Bush era.

milo z, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:23 (eighteen years ago)

in this sad company, budweiser truly is the king of beers

boh forever

pretzel walrus, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:44 (eighteen years ago)

Corona (and half the others on this list) outsells Miler Genuine Draft? I guess I'll have to go with the little German.

nickn, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:48 (eighteen years ago)

these beers suck, i'd only drink corona extra IRL, and then only a rare occasion, but i voted Miller High Life in honor of my dad who drank several thousand cases of the shit in his day

gershy, Monday, 19 November 2007 05:50 (eighteen years ago)

More surprised that Busch Light made the list - I haven't seen anyone drink a Busch-branded product the first Bush era.

The meathead dudes at the rather large university in my town seem to only drink Busch Light. It's not uncommon to go to the grocery store nearest campus on a Thursday or Friday and see a dozen grocery carts packed full of glorious Busch Light. My wife and I have actually adopted "Busch Light" as shorthand for everything related to getting undergrad-drunk in frathouses.

Out of all these beers, the only one I drink is Miller High Life, from cans, freezing cold, in the summer. It truly is the champagne of beers.

joygoat, Monday, 19 November 2007 06:41 (eighteen years ago)

Heineken i guess but man is this a bleak poll

jergïns, Monday, 19 November 2007 06:42 (eighteen years ago)

high life, dipshits!!

jergïns, Monday, 19 November 2007 06:46 (eighteen years ago)

joygoat otm. fratboys and after work tallboy drinkers support busch lite. will never die.

tehresa, Monday, 19 November 2007 06:49 (eighteen years ago)

Miller Lite, in the can, though I also like both Coors Light and Bud Light. But I like Miller best because you can drink more of it.

deej, Monday, 19 November 2007 07:08 (eighteen years ago)

Heineken > Corona and Miller High Life > Everything Else

remy bean, Monday, 19 November 2007 08:05 (eighteen years ago)

high life, i guess, if there's no pbr available

kingfish, Monday, 19 November 2007 08:34 (eighteen years ago)

Of those, I'd take a Budweiser (or "Bad Wizard"), but I'd probably do a lot of grumbling.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 19 November 2007 13:01 (eighteen years ago)

Corona > Heineken > piss-water

The Reverend, Monday, 19 November 2007 13:11 (eighteen years ago)

I guess a Heineken beats a limeless Corona, but too late I already voted.

The Reverend, Monday, 19 November 2007 13:12 (eighteen years ago)

Heinie, I guess. This is kind of a 'reduced to a beer run at the closest gas station 2 minutes before midnight and they lock the cabinets' poll, right?

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:23 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure I've seen michelob around for many years. Is it still available in Texas?

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:24 (eighteen years ago)

I would take Bud over Heineken (or any of the other beers on this list) any day.

I DIED, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:25 (eighteen years ago)

a Corona with lime >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> anything else there. I like Michelob full flavor in the smokey bottle.

wanko ergo sum, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:26 (eighteen years ago)

Miller Lite: when it's really really cold on a hot Texas day it beats just about any beer.

Euler, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:33 (eighteen years ago)

"any beer" really?? i say to you sir that you should try more beers

Upt0eleven, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:39 (eighteen years ago)

although having said that i've never been to Texas so maybe it's a geographical anomaly

Upt0eleven, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:40 (eighteen years ago)

Corona (and half the others on this list) outsells Miler Genuine Draft? I guess I'll have to go with the little German.

So is Miller 'Genuine Draft" the same thing as "High Life"? We only have the former here in Canada so I'm not sure if it's a marketing thing. I don't think I've had a "High Life" Miller, but if that's the same thing as MGD, then that would be my pick from the American beers on that list..

Corona and Heineken (Dutch, not German), are far better of course.

Rob Bolton, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:49 (eighteen years ago)

champaign of beers all the way.

chicago kevin, Monday, 19 November 2007 14:54 (eighteen years ago)

Bill Magill, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

How do they decide whether to name it "Light" or "Lite"?

caek, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:03 (eighteen years ago)

coronas is good

jhøshea, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:04 (eighteen years ago)

bud light

carne asada, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:05 (eighteen years ago)

straight-up budweiser in a bottle, no contest.

all the light beers on this list completely suck, heineken isn't very good but i'll take it over most of the others on the list, and if it's offered, a corona with a lime on a hot summer day is decent enough.

c'mon, no one buys natural light

you gotta be joking.... everybody drank this in high school. then they graduated to bud light and miller lite in college.

Mark Clemente, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:12 (eighteen years ago)

You mean, High Life and orange juice. If so, let me be the first to say, GLAH!

it's surprisingly classy!

Jordan, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:45 (eighteen years ago)

yeah lol American beer but I was with some guys from Munich here in the states a few weeks ago and one guy just wanted some American beer. I said "you want a Samuel Adams?" (we were at a fancy restaurant with a long wine list but not much beer) and he said no, he just wanted a light American beer (not a light beer). He ended up getting a Pabst Genuine Draft, which is pretty weak stuff, but he loved it! So lol american beer but hey if it's good enough for a guy from Munich (in October, no less)...

Euler, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:46 (eighteen years ago)

yeah dudes, High Life all the way. But you do pay dearly the next day (well I do, anyway). Busch regular isn't bad, but not on the list.

jhøshea, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:51 (eighteen years ago)

Ahahah I've been told that very firmly, that real Irishmen drink Budweiser. Because it's cheap and good enough.

Laurel, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

it's cheap, it's light, and you can drink a ton of it. higher alcohol content than guiness but you try drinking 12 guiness in a sitting, you won't be able to move.

chicago kevin, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:53 (eighteen years ago)

you know we have other beers too, that don't get to england, right?

Jordan, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:54 (eighteen years ago)

lol american beer

agreed for these top 10 beers. but i find american microbrewed beers to a lot more interesting than most of the european beers I've had. american IPAs, pale ales, imperial stouts 10000x greater than their european counterparts.

Mark Clemente, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

^^^

Jordan, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

and these microbrewed beers are also widely available.

Mark Clemente, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:55 (eighteen years ago)

Mark Clemente, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:56 (eighteen years ago)

anheuser busch corp:american beer :: mcdonalds corp:american food.

chicago kevin, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:57 (eighteen years ago)

I'm assuming the versions we get over here are slightly different but all of these are fuck-awful other than Heineken and Corona. Heineken has only been drinkable since they changed the recipe and upped the alcohol content, but there's no way I'd choose any of these unless there was nothing else on sale.

Matt DC, Monday, 19 November 2007 15:59 (eighteen years ago)

Which "European counterparts" are you comparing them to?

The American IPAs, stouts, pale ales etc that I've had are completely different beasts to the British versions and are closer to the bottom fermenting Baltic Porters.

aldo, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:02 (eighteen years ago)

Heineken in Amsterdam or at least the Netherlands generally >>>> Heineken anywhere else

DG, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

yeah I don't know what the deal is with folks from outside the USA coming here and taking to American beer. My Russian uncle is at this point chemically identical to Old Style. Miller Lite (or Bud, etc.) is great because it's not distracting to drink; whereas an imperial stout say demands my full attention. Depending on what I'm doing, eating, etc., I might not want my beer to be distracting.

Euler, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:07 (eighteen years ago)

* Beast Ice
* Coors Xtra Cold
* Corona Dry

burt_stanton, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

completely different beasts to the British versions

maybe you're more accurate in saying they just need to be compared to the right european beers.

most of the british IPAs/stouts/pale ales i've are pretty mild, and not in a good way -- kind of watery, not terribly complex, whereas the american varieties of these beers tend to be a lot more aggressive, intense, etc. more interesting to me.

this might be a bit unfair -- being here in the states i've obviously been able to sample american beers more than european ones. i've also only been to the uk once. i did my share of beer drinking there but i wasn't there long enough to sample everything. but generally i've found american microbrews responsible for the most interesting beers i've had.

Mark Clemente, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:09 (eighteen years ago)

mookieproof, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

There are certainly quite a lot of session bitters that are superficially quite watery, but these tend to have quite a complex hops undertaste. It also depends to an extent what time of year you go - you're more likely to find these sorts of beers in the summer, when people are looking for something light and refreshing. Winter beers are very dense, I remember drinking one at a beer festival which was like christmas cake.

I've drunk my fair share of smaller American brews and I do quite like them, although the cider I had was bluddy awful.

aldo, Monday, 19 November 2007 16:17 (eighteen years ago)

This is the Ontario best-sellers (not sure if it extends to the rest of Canada, or if it's even in order, though)

Coors Light
Molson Canadian
Budweiser
Labatt Blue
Carling Lager
Lakeport Pilsener
Alexander Keith's Pale Ale
Lucky Lager
Lakeport Honey Lager
Bud Light

Tadcaster Oatmeal Stout
Hopback's Entire Stout

Wye Valley Dorothy Goodbody's Wholesome Stout
Harvey's Imperial Russian Stout (a modern copy of the Courage one, but a fair stab)
Isle Of Skye Black Cuillin
Orkney Dark Island

Loads more, but they're the first that came into my head.

Think about it this way, TCRotDTT:

As long as good beers aren't up there, they won't start getting brewed by he hundreds of thousands of litres and start losing their quality. This means the good beers stay good! Huzzah! Another round of Biere D'Achouf!

Miller High Life in first place, Budweiser second, everything else after that in no particular order, with the exception of Heineken, which is horrifying undrinkable garbage best forced upon unwanted guests.

John Justen, Monday, 19 November 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

I don't think I've had any of those in the last 10 years except for Corona.

(Found Sierra Nevada at Total Wines in Kennesaw for $20.99/case, cheapest I've ever seen it.)

Rock Hardy, Monday, 19 November 2007 21:58 (eighteen years ago)

JJ otm, I have no idea why anyone likes Heineken & esp. why it has this 'classy' image. ???

But I picked Budweiser.

Abbott, Monday, 19 November 2007 21:59 (eighteen years ago)

I'm with you. I can't stand Heineken, but love Budweiser.

Bill Magill, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:08 (eighteen years ago)

Depends on what you like, I guess. Bud and many of the other domestics above are made with rice in addition to the barley malt. The rice is a cheaper ingredient than barley malt, and its proponents claim it gives the beer a lighter taste. Heineken is made with the traditional European beer ingredients. I think it gives it a slightly better flavor, but to each his/her own.

o. nate, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:09 (eighteen years ago)

heineken tastes like ass and is no more flavorful than shitty domestic beer. i don't think anybody drinks the above listed for taste, those are consumed for effect only i'd wager.

chicago kevin, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:21 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, not a fan of Heineken, either. I voted for High Life.

I OD'd on Heineken over the course of two weeks at a jazz festival they sponsored, and pretty much cannot drink it now.

Jordan, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:26 (eighteen years ago)

I actually maybe like MGD better, but that wasn't an option.

jaymc, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)

The reason to serve beer ice-cold is to numb your tastebuds so you can't taste it. Ten reasons to prevent tasting your beer can be found at the top of this poll.

Oilyrags, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:29 (eighteen years ago)

It's really a top ten of mediocrity, though. There are much much worse beers than any of those on that list (aside from Heineken, which actually would hit my bottom 10).

Early contenders that would leap to mind would be Glueks and Natty ICE, which is gastrointestinal death in a can.

John Justen, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:32 (eighteen years ago)

i don't think anybody drinks the above listed for taste, those are consumed for effect only i'd wager.
o come on, frat boys don't account for all the sales. there are plenty of sober, rational adults who actually enjoy drinking these beers. if this makes you ashamed to be an american, you can try to come up with some excuse or just get over it.

mizzell, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:34 (eighteen years ago)

Out of curiosity, how many people who are hating on Heineken are Europe-side, and how many are American-side? I have no specific hatred for it, and I wonder if it's actually due to the brewing (The Heineken drank in USA is not brewed in Germany).

Will M., Monday, 19 November 2007 22:35 (eighteen years ago)

deej, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:42 (eighteen years ago)

come on, frat boys don't account for all the sales.

i never said anything about frat boys and would assume that most frat boys would buy shittier cheaper beer. i'm talking about your functioning alocholics who drink at least a sixpack a night.

my point was if someone is going out to enjoy the taste of a a beer or two (or three or four) i don't know anyone who's going to choose one of the above. anyone drinking the above is more than likely looking for the effect that multiple beers bring.

chicago kevin, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Oilrags OTM, the first time I discovered Budweiser enjoyment was when it had been sitting in a cooler of ice for 4 hours.

chicago kevin, Monday, 19 November 2007 22:48 (eighteen years ago)

don't know anyone who's going to choose one of the above
this doesn't mean it's not true.

Actually, I've been in many situations where the choices were limited to a subset of the above. Airplanes, certain restaurants, certain music venues - it's not really that uncommon.

o. nate, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 01:50 (eighteen years ago)

Water >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> bad beer.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:13 (eighteen years ago)

High Life Light, yea or nay? (okay, obviously a nay, but has anyone deigned to drink it?)

milo z, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

Several ILXors were drinking it on Thursday, my friend.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:18 (eighteen years ago)

high life is my beer of choice.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:19 (eighteen years ago)

ya, but what about the Light? I'd never even noticed it before I saw the Errol Morris commercials above.

milo z, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

the light stinks

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:21 (eighteen years ago)

high life light i've never had, i misread.
i could really go for a beer and/or cigarette.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:22 (eighteen years ago)

Sigh. I bought a nice tequila on the way home. Enough beer for a while.

Laurel, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 02:23 (eighteen years ago)

Young's 2x chocolate summarizes all that is worth living for. Sam Smith's Imperial and Oatmeal stouts can't be neglected as well.

The fact that it's basically water with a v. slight kick is what MHL the best of this lot.

Sundar, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:34 (eighteen years ago)

I had a High Life Light once and it wasn't terrible, better than Miller Lite at least?

Jordan, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 17:40 (eighteen years ago)

this thread made me so angry i went out and had a Powers and a Budweiser yesterday. It was delicious.

mizzell, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:23 (eighteen years ago)

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

although i was drinking powers and high life on saturday, that probably had something to do with us getting to the theatre too late for tickets.

chicago kevin, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 18:27 (eighteen years ago)

What is Powers!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 19:23 (eighteen years ago)

carne asada, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:00 (eighteen years ago)

I have also been doing the shot and a beer combo. Much lower incidence of hangover than, say, wine. Which I am currently regretting drinking so much of last night.

I could go for about two more hours of sleep, tbh.

B.L.A.M., Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:09 (eighteen years ago)

I like to start out the night with a shot before I even go out!

roxymuzak, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 20:54 (eighteen years ago)

jergïns, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

My nights always take a turn for the worse when someone hands me a can of coors, asks me to take a sip, then fills it with jack's.

and by worse I MEAN BETTER.

Will M., Tuesday, 20 November 2007 22:02 (eighteen years ago)

I have a bottle of Sauza Reposado at home, that's going to have to do.

mookieproof, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 23:04 (eighteen years ago)

I just drank a Corona with lemon. I spit in the face of tradition. And I'm out of lime.

High Life is also great w/ a slice of lime!

nickalicious, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:14 (eighteen years ago)

A sweaty bottle of MHL in direct sunlight is honestly almost as aesthetically pleasing to look at for me as a glorious sunset.

nickalicious, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

I'm not sure I've seen michelob around for many years. Is it still available in Texas?

It's sold in Australia. I see it everywhere. It's cheap too, I've had it a few times.

TRUTH

My relationship to the High Life is like how some people relate to underperforming sports teams: it's basically my favorite beer, even though I know it's watery and not that great, I actually like fancy beers better, and will admit that Bud is actually the best in that list. But it's still the champagne of beers, and in the summer it's refreshing adult pop more than it is an "alcoholic beverage." Which is also why it's alarmingly easy to drink in quantity.

During the last years of college there were usually about 20-30 of these in the fridge at any given time, it seemed.

gbx, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:08 (eighteen years ago)

I will contentedly drink any of those beers if they are on special for ≤ $2USD except Heineken, which almost always tastes light-struck to me, even when it probably isn't. But I voted for the High Life because it reminds me of drinking in bars with grownups instead of shotgunning cans of beer in my living room.

Jenny, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:28 (eighteen years ago)

I do hate those stupid High Life commercials where the smug beer delivery guy goes into a decent liquor store and removes the MHL. They are branding High Life as a "lifestyle," which is just as affected and artificial as Mr. Smug Delivery Guy claims drinkers of fancy beers are.

Jenny, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:32 (eighteen years ago)

there is no fucking way anyone drinks natty lite on purpose.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:54 (eighteen years ago)

i vote coors, politics notwithstanding, none of that pesky 'taste' to get in the way of your drunkening.

tremendoid, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:56 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

I bought a 12-pack of Tecate tonight. I probably buy that more than anything.

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:02 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but from this list of 10 it's gotta be Budweiser and if you don't choose Budweiser then you're basically a fag woot

iiiijjjj, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:05 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, obv there's no great answer here, but it's gotta be High Life.

kenan, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:14 (eighteen years ago)

You and me and the Girl in the Moon makes three.

Kerm, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:36 (eighteen years ago)

The Mexicans in my neighbs hell of mock me if I drink Tecate or other Mexican beers. They ONLY like Bud Light.

Abbott, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:39 (eighteen years ago)

i don't like bud anything, but it is better than corona. tecate is decent.

tremendoid, Sunday, 25 November 2007 01:09 (eighteen years ago)

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

those are all horrid beers

Bo Jackson Overdrive, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:06 (eighteen years ago)

Coors 'Banquet' Beer (probably just a mid-90's marketing angle on Coors Original) I remember fondly.

will, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:17 (eighteen years ago)

1989, the number, another summer of the coors party ball

mookieproof, Monday, 26 November 2007 03:52 (eighteen years ago)

this poll is actually now totally fucking lame because we have no way of seeing how ILX preferences differ from the populace
