I voted for Fanta but it's gotta be Mexican Fanta or pre-high-fructose-corn-syrup Fanta or something 'cause HFCS tastes like fuckin hog balls. Also, where is Jarritos on this poll, which pwns all these effortlessly.

J0hn D., Sunday, 25 November 2007 15:02 (eighteen years ago)

Whatever it is they serve at McDonald's.

Fanta, although 25 years ago I would have voted for Corona. Then drank it, and returned the bottle for the money.

You guys, just drink your Orange Crush and be grateful for what you have!

Abbott, Sunday, 25 November 2007 20:56 (eighteen years ago)

One of the only drinks I can think of that's more disgusting to me than orange soda is the "orange drink" that used to be made available to us in small carton servings in elementary school. I dunno if it bears any similarity to the "orange drink" served at McDonald's that John mentions upthread, but, blechhh.

Grape soda is vile, too. I could never understand why the kids on What's Happening!! were always ordering it at Rob's Place.

adam, Sunday, 25 November 2007 21:27 (eighteen years ago)

Hawaiian Punch and Orange Crush had "extreme" names decade(s) before the whole extreme thing started. Yet, curiously enough, Mountain Dew, which I think of as maybe aiming for extreme what with its especially high sugar and caffeine contents, plus the old tv ads featuring kids diving into rivers or whatever, has such a mello name.

dell, Sunday, 25 November 2007 21:48 (eighteen years ago)

hillbilly shit! moonshine.

My brother Bill runs a still on the hill
Where he turns out a gallon or two
And the buzzards in the sky get so drunk they can not fly
Just from sniffing that good old mountain dew.

Chorus
They call it that good old mountan dew,
And them that refuse it are few.
I'll hush up my mug if you'll fill up my jug
With that good old mountain dew.

My aunt Lucille had an automobile,
It ran on a gallon or two.
It didn't need no gas and it didn't need no oil,
It just ran on that good old mountain dew.

Repeat chorus

My uncle Mort, he is sawed off and short,
He measure 'bout four foot two,
But he thinks he's a giant when you give him a pint
Of that good old mountain dew.

Repeat chorus

Old Auntie June had a brand new perfume,
It had such a wonderful "pew"
But to her surprise, when she had it analyzed,
It was nothing but that good old mountain dew

Repeat chorus

I know a guy named Pete, his hair ain't so neat,
Though he fixes it with syrup and blue,
But it stays right in place when he uses just a trace
Of that good old mountain dew.

Repeat chorus

The preacher-he walked by, with a big tear in his eye
Said that his wife had the flu
And hadn't I ought just to give him a quart
Of that good old mountain dew

Repeat chorus

My uncle Klaus had a real mean old mouse
When they asked how it happened,
He said it was a lappin'
That good old mountain dew

Repeat chorus

There's an old hollow tree, just a little way from me
Where you lay down a dollar or two
If you hush up your mug, then they'll give you a jug
Of that good old mountain dew

Repeat chorus

You take a little trash and you mix it up with ash,
And you throw in the soul of a shoe,
Then you stir it awhile with an old rusty file,
And they call it that good old mountain dew.

Repeat chorus

During the last war, we couldn't get no more,
We didn't have no sugar for the dew
With a few old potaters and a few ripe tomaters,
We turned out some stuff, I'm tellin' you

Repeat chorus

Old Deacon Crane took a trip in the rain,
Said his wife had come down with the flu,
But she'll be all right if you give her a pint
Of that good old mountain dew.

Repeat chorus

Mr. Franklin Roosevelt, he told me how he felt
The day the old dry law went through:
If your likker's too red, it will swell up your head
Better stick to that good old mountain dew

Abbott, Sunday, 25 November 2007 21:50 (eighteen years ago)

Frightening.

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 November 2007 21:51 (eighteen years ago)

this is a tough poll, if it was root beer or lemon lime soda I'd be all opinionated and partisan, but with orange soda I'm pretty happy with whatever option I'm given. I'll probably go with Fanta since that's what they have at the deli down the street from my office and I'm happy with that every time.

Alex in Baltimore, Sunday, 25 November 2007 21:52 (eighteen years ago)

that's crazy

and morewow from wikipedia:
Mountain Dew's name is a previously-existing euphemism for moonshine, which likely traces back to Ireland (see the Irish folk song "The Rare Auld Mountain Dew"), and has generally been marketed to highlight its potency. It was originally marketed as "zero proof moonshine" and had pictures of hillbillies on the bottle until 1973.

Bascom Lamar Lunsford's original recording of "Old Mountain Dew," an Appalachian old-time song, was used as the first advertising theme for the newly created Mountain Dew soda.

Nubbelverbrennung, Sunday, 25 November 2007 22:43 (eighteen years ago)

Jumex doesn't do an orange, do they? I'll have to keep an eye open for that.

Oilyrags, Sunday, 25 November 2007 22:47 (eighteen years ago)

Mountain Dew commercials used to feature cowboys jumping into streams.

Pleasant Plains, Sunday, 25 November 2007 22:53 (eighteen years ago)

I love Bascom Lamar Lunsford!

SO MUCH.

Sorry abt the caps again.

Jumex is not a soda Oilyrags but I will rep for it any day bcz it is delicious and bcz one day in HS creative writing class, we busted into this random Jumex poetry day. First we had a competition where we tried to crush Jumex cans by jumping on them. Then we all wrote silly praises to Jumex. <3 the Jumex.

Sadly Valencia Orange was discontinued, like, 4 years ago. I still have a 2 liter bottle of it, though, that I've kept for memories' sake.

Stevie D, Sunday, 25 November 2007 23:31 (eighteen years ago)

More like JEWmex, amirite?

The Reverend, Sunday, 25 November 2007 23:32 (eighteen years ago)

Tahitian Treat is the bomb! My favorite sodas of them all though are the "champagne cola" style, you can buy 2-liter jobbers of 'em from Colombia at sometimes at local Latino markets - that shit makes other colas seem ridiculous

Pellegrino is great for when you're playing polo and worrying whether Muffy feels alienated back at the clubhouse

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 26 November 2007 00:01 (eighteen years ago)

No Jaritos, No credibility, however I will probably go for dan pelegrino because it has a good acidity and is not too sweet.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 26 November 2007 16:53 (eighteen years ago)

Pellegrino is great but not synthetic enough. I'm going for Fanta.

Matt DC, Monday, 26 November 2007 17:14 (eighteen years ago)

Fanta in the UK is neither synthetic or natural enough, it has no sense of purpose, admittedly it is much better in hot countries where it seems to be much more artificial. Mirinda has to take the prize for stickiest sweetest, most artificial one.

FANTA?!! you guys are some true salt-of-the-earth motherfuckers i guess huh i ain't mad at you tho. anyway 1 person voting for slice is much more damning than 12 people voting for fanta.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 27 November 2007 00:49 (eighteen years ago)

Fanta is really satisfyingly tart and acidic. I'll take a smoother soda over it, though.

Jones Soda Co. is a U.S. beverage company based in Seattle, Washington.

Ha!

The Reverend, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 20:50 (eighteen years ago)

Jones look cooler than they are, most of the ones I've had are too sweet

J0hn D., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:04 (eighteen years ago)

certainly not as cool as the pellegrino case I got from my funds manager for christmas

J0hn D., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:05 (eighteen years ago)

apparently jones sells football themed sodas at seahawks games. flavors like "grass" and "sweat" which obv sound way more intriguing than appetizing

http://tooniepipes.com/images/cplus.jpg
Damn - missed this thread. I was incensed at the lack of a "C-plus" option, until I learned that this was the Canadian brand name of "Sunkist". We always seem to get different names here in Canuckland... Fanta and Crush were both pretty good though, mind you I was partial to Grape Crush instead (screw the haters, Grape pop is delicious).

And holy flashback and mmmmm to Tahitian Treat (called 'Tahiti Treat' here).

Still, best Orange soda/pop around these parts back in the day came from this wacky beverage company called The Pop Shoppe.

Rob Bolton, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 21:10 (eighteen years ago)

oh my God the Pop Shoppe. Rob, you have brought back fond memories.

J0hn D., Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

indeed. we had a 'shoppe' right around the corner from us when i was growing up, and it was always good times going there to return the empty bottles and pick up some fresh ones. pretty cool concept, really.

Rob Bolton, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 22:06 (eighteen years ago)

Sunkist got robbed and should have won because it is a) tasty, b) refreshing and c) "Orange Monday".
