Pretty insane (new?) feature in which you can essentially walk around select U.S. cities with a full 360 degree view. Doubtless not as cool if you don't live in NY, LA, Chicago, etc. But as a Philly resident, I can confirm this is pretty bananas.

My car is in two places simultaneously. I guess their camera-car came by my place when I was home, and my friend's place when I was there.
I'm a little disappointed by the low resolution. I can't even read the sign at the site of my old favorite restaurant, to see if it's changed. Of course it might be a little creepy if you could zoom into peoples windows...

Typically the British press are getting their knickers in a twist about this, snoopers charter, invasion of privacy, licence for thieves to case out properties etc. Clearly the useless twunts haven't even looked at the US experience. Gathering the imagery for Street View requires quite a bit of driving; as such, we take safety very seriously. Unfortunately, accidents do happen -- as some people have noticed, one of our Street View cars hit a deer while driving on a rural road in upstate New York. Due to several user requests using the "Report a concern" tool, these images are no longer available in Street View.

if anything i think the widespread acceptance, even excitement, is more disturbing than the actual photos - i don't assume my flat will be burgled or that i'll be stalked b/c of it (though if i'd had stalker problems ever i'd be petrified about it) - it just transgresses a basic expectation of privacy for me. ok, any random lunatic could take pictures of my flat and put them on flickr or whatever, but that would still be indefensibly creepy, and this just makes the creepiness so much more official. it's awful.

A lot of the families here are Orthodox Jewish, and have tons of kids who all run around through each other's yards, so maybe that's part of it? We're going to put up a small fence or hedge, though.

All the orthodox jews in my neighbourhood must have complained to google, because within weeks of my area going up on streetview, large chunks of the surrounding streets disappeared again. Not whole streets - just bits, 2-5 properties wide.
It then occurred to me each was where a temple or jewish high school was.
I dont understand the paranoia, but eh *shrug*. Its not like the places arent blazingly obviously jewish temples/schools when you pass them on the road!

if you saw someone outside your flat staring at and studying the building - not in a casual, walking-past way, but loitering and looking closely & carefully - would you not be creeped out and discomfited? if i saw that i'd be calling the fucking police. if someone physically did that there's a reasonable expectation that someone would see them, but the thing with google street view is that anyone can do this without you knowing.
apparently there was some furore when this was rolled out in japan - cis sent me links to the debate here and here - cut through the "cultural divisions" argument and plenty of the points are massively otm
also you may not necessarily have had problems with stalkers, or wanted to keep certain people from knowing too much about where you live or work, but it should seem obvious that plenty of people do have to think about such issues.
― lex pretend, Friday, 20 March 2009 10:38 (sixteen years ago)
does anyone know how often the streetviews are updated?
― lo (cozwn), Friday, 20 March 2009 10:39 (sixteen years ago)
i looked at my old houses and have no idea when they were taken, if i was living there at the time or not. there were some blurred-face people around, but pretty sure none were me.
surely the whole point of stalking is you have some idea of the stalkee before stalking them? ie not randomly scrolling through streetviews and looking out for blurred-face people... idk, maybe even stalkers are aspie shut-ins these days. but the odds of someone finding out where you live or work from streetviews have got to be pretty small.
― FREE DOM AND ETHAN (special guest stars mark bronson), Friday, 20 March 2009 10:43 (sixteen years ago)
If my stalker doesn't know where I live, no problem. If the stalker knows or can find out where I live, that's a problem regardless of streetview. Don't see how this enables anything.
Maybe if you leave your key in view through the window...
http://vision.ucsd.edu/~blaxton/pagePapers/laxton_wang_savage_ccs2008.pdf "Using modest imaging equipment and standard computer vision al-gorithms, we demonstrate the effectiveness of physical key teledu-plication — extracting a key’s complete and precise bitting code ata distance via optical decoding and then cutting precise duplicates"

people are focusing too much on actual concrete consequences - i'm not arguing that bad things will definitely happen as a result of this, but it instinctively feels intrusive and uncomfortable, and for people with security concerns, it does absolutely nothing for their peace of mind
― lex pretend, Friday, 20 March 2009 10:49 (sixteen years ago)
It's odd that this weirds so many people out considering people have been for several years totally okay with the idea of putting pictures of their face on the internet, with their name attached, for anyone to see, and even with the notion that it's virtually impossible to stop people from doing so in this day and age. But as soon as houses come into it people freak.
There's another argument to be made about sheer saturation of information, one house among hundreds of thousands of others isn't really that interesting, unless you have a special reason to be interested in it. In which case that's either creepy or not depending on your interest and, as Ledge says, if that reason is creepy then whether you can look at that house on the internet is almost irrelevant seeing as you can turn up there in person any time you want.
― McDonaldinho (Matt DC), Friday, 20 March 2009 10:51 (sixteen years ago)
it's not about houses vs faces - it's an issue of control. putting photos of myself on the internet is an information flow that i'm 99% in charge of - this is something i have no control whatsoever over.
and turning up in person to do creepy shit and loiter around is absolutely not the same thing as being able to study and look closely on the internet. the first will probably get you arrested, for one thing.
― lex pretend, Friday, 20 March 2009 10:56 (sixteen years ago)
it seems so innocuous tho in terms of actual useful stuff it outputs: bcs it is updated so infrequently it doesn't really give stalkers/thiefs all that much useful information (terrorists/etc it gives more useful info perhaps). compared to something like club cards, e.g, and which seem to me much more invasive of privacy, giving tesco/etc a daily account of everything you buy and letting them target you based on that. but again with these and with facebook I'm giving my explicit consent for the info to be shared. I guess I'm giving google tacit consent by not complaining to them?
― lo (cozwn), Friday, 20 March 2009 10:58 (sixteen years ago)
But if someone wants to take a photo of your house and put it on the internet without your consent they have been able to do so for years. At least with Google it's accountable to them and you can get it removed.
(Someone needs to try that with their house, see how long it takes)
― Matt DC, Friday, 20 March 2009 11:02 (sixteen years ago)
I was gonna say that's still not equivalent but then I remembered that you can upload your own "streetviews" to google maps can't you?
― lo (cozwn), Friday, 20 March 2009 11:04 (sixteen years ago)

― \∫Öζ/.... argh oh noes! (ken c), Friday, 20 March 2009 11:05 (sixteen years ago)

In attempting to argue with the Lex I've actually succeeded in weirding myself out now.
― Matt DC, Friday, 20 March 2009 11:06 (sixteen years ago)

― \∫Öζ/.... argh oh noes! (ken c), Friday, 20 March 2009 11:06 (sixteen years ago)
What's really annoying about Google Streetview is that it actually restricts itself to streets so there are huge swathes of eg Hampstead Heath that you can't actually see. Including the view from the top of Parliament Hill I think.
― Matt DC, Friday, 20 March 2009 11:08 (sixteen years ago)

I have taken pictures of random people's houses and put them on the internet before (like, every fucking time I go on holiday for one thing). lex if you were standing in the window with your willy out then maybe you'd have a point. but there's nothing private about the outside of a house unless you build a big fucking wall around it, always been the case for obvious reasons and google streetview does nothing to change that. Do Google image vans not go south of the river or something? How come Electric Avenue hasn't been done when my little street out in Zone 3 has?
― I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE UP TO (Colonel Poo), Tuesday, 24 March 2009 16:22 (sixteen years ago)
Google Street View omits roads not passable by traffic. The market on Electric Avenue prevents traffic access. Same with Ridley Road in Dalston, which is also not covered.

There's other roads around Brixton you can't go down on Street View that are traffic accessible, I reckon they're just shirking.

You should try dragging the little figure to Australia - outside of the cities it looks like Mars with stubby trees. And I also had my first Google Maps Streetview dream last night - I dreamt that I was Streetviewing along the main street of my home town, but when they took the pictures there was a carnival in progress, so all I could see was floats and people dressed in costumes.

outside the office I work in in Clerkenwell, you can see a girl from my office sat on the front steps crying, while another dude from the office consoles hernothing creepy or intrusive or wrong about that at all, oh no!
Creepy is when you follow around a particular person and photograph them crying. Creepy is not when you take a pic of a building and a crying person just has to get themselves in the frame.
A person crying in public is really invading the public space with their weeping, y'know? It's not an invasion of privacy. It's an invasion of publicity.

Does any country in the world wring it's hands about streetview as much as us Brits?
Google's Street View has come under fire after a new survey shows that two-thirds of people find the images 'intrusive' and 24 per cent think it is a 'service for burglars'.

― i love the smell of facepalm in the morning (ledge), Sunday, 19 June 2011 09:08 (fourteen years ago)
I prefer this to the Virtual Road Trip thing above which pretty much does what you want, because:1. moving between adjacent streetview feels slow and clunky, which saps the joy out of following a route2. if I'm looking at an unfamiliar city, I don't know which bits are interesting to look at, so I don't want to pick the route myself - I'm quite happy to zap randomly between unknown locations, some of which are central and may contain glimpses of famous landmarks (possibly not from the usual angle) and some of which are pleasingly off the beaten tourist track
I just had a pleasing teleport around SF, which I visited for 4 days in 1999, so it's a good combination of mostly unfamiliar + a little bit of "hey I think we went down the next street across" for me
(but setting the refresh time might be good, though at least you can pause if you get an interesting one, and skip if you don't)
― sambal dalek (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 19 June 2011 10:06 (fourteen years ago)
pressing 'x' to stop teleportation wasn't working for mealso, I got stuck on that thing where the camera pans whenever the pointer moves, and couldn't get out of it. (I guess I just don't know the trick; to get out of it I'd left click, which would zoom me in, then I'd have to zoom out etc)

― Aphex Twin … in my vagina? (Karen D. Tregaskin), Monday, 8 August 2011 14:30 (fourteen years ago)
i don't think you can tell how high it is? only how much higher the camera is (twice as high according to my calculations). typical approach height over london might be 2-4000 feet tho.
― ledge, Monday, 8 August 2011 14:31 (fourteen years ago)
er not feet, metres. i think.
you wouldn't see the shadow because of the height. not in the same frame anyway.
― jed_, Monday, 8 August 2011 14:33 (fourteen years ago)
I wasn't even thinking right when I said that. Of course, the plane would appear larger in relation to how close it was to the camera, not the other way around.

Sometimes I like to pick out random cross streets in New Orleans and "drive around." 1604 St. Thomas Street, down in the warehouses near the river, features a burned out, gutted car.

― bulge renaissance (+ +), Monday, 30 January 2012 22:40 (thirteen years ago)
Yikes....
I don't find NOLA that depressing overall. There are plenty of blighted areas (and the Lower 9th Ward, obviously), but it's deceptive b/c even totally livable and even desirable areas look ramshackle compared to other cities.
― garbage corn fan (Je55e), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 01:53 (thirteen years ago)
It's just crazy that even in 2011, you get photos like this one of NOLA.
― pplains, Tuesday, 31 January 2012 02:15 (thirteen years ago)
Yeh, you're right. It is pretty heartbreaking. I was there about a year ago and along I-10 on the edges of town, there were still several huge apartment complexes (the kind of generic sprawling ones with dozens of 2-4 story buildings) that stood empty and untouched from the day Katrina came through. It's some zombie apocalypse looking stuff :(
― garbage corn fan (Je55e), Tuesday, 31 January 2012 02:36 (thirteen years ago)
I couldn't find the complexes on Street View, but they're like these, but wrecked and falling apart with no one to even demolish them.
http://g.mnp0.com/dimg/2115260/460x345/2115260.JPG
It's surreal, and it's got to take its toll on people who see them every day. I was only there for 6 months, but even that made me feel *off* - too dramatic to call it "crazy," but not just right.

20,000 people have yet to return to their homes. Google Street View gives those people a tour of the city's current state.

This is kind of weird - Google Streetview is usually so good about blurring faces. I've even seen artwork on signs blurred because the mapping thought it was a real face.
But, on the one street in America where you probably would demand to have your face blurred, GSV has been leaving everything out in the open.

I am mostly terrible at this but it's p. compelling! I did just have a good-ish game (read: lucky) until I thought a woody backroad in West Virginia might be in Belgium.
(also I would have been really lucky with place #2 as I was dumped down right outside a big sign saying Kapuskasing - 'cept I had no idea where that was. Turned round and there was a Tim Horton's, though, so that was a pretty good clue)

there are fewer of them ever year--
In 1950 there were 3,035 primary elevators in Saskatchewan, with storage capacity of 283 million bushels and twenty-two licenced buyers. Twenty years later, in 1970, there were 2,750 elevators, with storage capacity of 225 million bushels. After that the number of elevators declined tremendously, so that by 2004 there are only 197 primary licenced elevators, with a storage capacity of 2.8 million tonnes (100 million bushels). Although there are only six major grain companies as buyers, there are now approximately fifteen terminals owned by farmers—wholly or in some joint venture with a major grain company.

You guys are all cheating. The real rules of this game are that you are not even allowed to look at the screen: a 3rd party must act out the scene via charades and then you throw a dart in the general direction of a map.
Reading the name of a grain elevator is just wayyyyy over the line for me, for example, consider blind people or those without a computer for example.

Things I hate:
• Russian locations because I can't read Cyrillic.
• Locations where you can't move anywhere, just look around yourself.
• I swear, if I get dropped down on some stretch of a 1000 km dirt road in the middle of Australia again...

I've had that one too. So, pre-chosen rather than random, I reckon, otherwise what are the chances?
― ailsa, Monday, 3 June 2013 21:13 (twelve years ago)
The one that plunked me down in the middle of a logging road in a BC forest sure seemed random.
I have been noticing this unintentional Soderbergh filtered way of going from the grainy standard cameras from the 2007 days of yore to the high-def ones of today. Sometimes you'll catch the scenes side-by-side, and can back up and down from one year to the next.
― pplains, Monday, 3 June 2013 21:25 (twelve years ago)
I've gotten the Ketchikan one and nameless dude, so yeah, probably not totally random. But they still seem to give me "road in Australia with no identifying features" a lot.

Kinda neat to find a place on there where it's always Christmas.
I was cruising through some neighborhood - maybe in Baltimore - where the yards had gravestones and the front porches had cobwebs. Of all times they pick to drive the camera around, they pick Halloween.

Annoying *new* streetview. They've removed the static navigational arrows, so you have to just click on the road to move around. Which is terrible because if you get a road that goes over/under another road you'll end up teleporting.
also horrid huge road labels don't seem to be removable.

It drops you in a random location in Street View--anywhere in the world, or limit it to specific countries, cities, etc.
Tool around in Street View looking for clues to your location. (Oh look, a sign for a eucalyptus oil distillery and a street named South Coast Road--southern Australia maybe?)
In another little window, zoom all the way in on a world map and click where you think you are. It will show you how close you were and award points.

I'm pissed off at streetview. I managed to get in it when the car drove near my workplace last summer. They updated the photo sometime last fall. This thread had prompted me to go back and check it out, but it had already been overwritten by another pass they did in October.
HOWEVER, the streetview of my house hasn't been updated since 2013. I've had the siding replaced since then and would prefer to see an updated result. Another house on my street also had major renovations done and the house next door was completely bulldozed and rebuilt.
I had never heard of the time travel function before. It's available on my residential street, but not in the part of downtown DC where I work.

So briefly off-topic, this shirt makes no sense.
https://i.imgur.com/FK4k65W.jpg
1.) Why a new shirt say it's an old shirt? If it was bought when the old person was still a virgin, shouldn't it have said "this is a new shirt?"
2.) What if s/he was still a virgin, then what difference would the shirt's age be?
3.) Do they make shirts that say "I watch Quantum Leap (but this is an old shirt)"?
4.) OK, so "I watch Quantum Leap" probably = "I'm a virgin", but you see where I'm going with this.
― pplains, Sunday, 21 July 2019 01:48 (six years ago)
I think the implication is that you were a virgin when you bought the shirt but might not still be.
― o. nate, Sunday, 21 July 2019 01:52 (six years ago)
Yeah, but why would you buy a new shirt that said this is an old shirt.
― pplains, Sunday, 21 July 2019 02:28 (six years ago)
it's a kind of real life clickbait joke. like the deliberate funny false advertising signs that say "FREE BEER" or "TOPLESS WAITRESSES" in big letters and then something like "tomorrow" or "next door" in smaller letters, which you only see after they got your attention.
― StanM, Sunday, 21 July 2019 02:42 (six years ago)
At least those signs aren't outright LIES.
Key West, Fla. --- 1971
BRENDA, 17: "Oh this shirt is great! I can wear it since I am a virgin! Good thing it also says 'this is an old shirt' so 48 years from now when I'm surrounded my family and grandchildren, people will realize that it was only true when i bought it, which is today."

That sidewalk is pretty bad.
BUT I would almost bet that the 9th Street sidewalk originally ran down to the corner to Woodland (behind the camera.)
https://i.imgur.com/3AltHQR.png
Maybe when they added Mary Lou Williams Ln. (and cut off 10th Street from the rest of 10th Street), they realized MLW needed a sidewalk as well. So they just laid one out until it met the 9th Street sidewalk.
I dunno, still poor municipal planning, but it's The Paseo.

I wasn'really sure what it looks like! It is right on the border, but I presumed it was maybe some kind of tour guide. I know a guy that went on holiday to Syria (sometime around 2009?) and he had that kind of setup

Just up the road is We Are Our Mountains, a monument that looks like a Pink Floyd album cover:https://goo.gl/maps/Cx9SnVTrEjTbAQha6
According to Wikipedia it was the centre of controversy during the Eurovision Song Contest in 2009 because the Armenian contestant used an image of it as a stage backdrop even though it's technically on Azerbaijani territory.
I'm sure the people of Ilxor are familiar with the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and regularly discuss it during dinner parties. I too have always been aware of it, ever since I read about it on Wikipedia a few minutes ago.
I'm going to try and drop it into casual conversation in a way that suggests I have been aware of the conflict forever. If all of you agree to be quiet no-one need ever know that my entire persona is built on lies.
Also, it's not really Street View, but I visited Shenzhen a couple of weeks ago, and Google's map of the border area is wrong. There's a large blank spot at the border crossing the Shenzhen's roads are broken:https://i.imgur.com/N3Bqfoi.jpg
Apparently it's a quirk of how different countries implement the GPS coordinate system - China uses a different system to the rest of the world, including Hong Kong, so although Google's satellite images are correct the roads at the border area overlap and go wrong.
When I went I used OSMAnd on my mobile phone, which was accurate, but according to Wikipedia it has been illegal since 2002 for entities other than the Chinese government to publish "significant geographic information" on China so I wonder if I was breaking the law. Merely using OSMAnd with my phone's location service turned on isn't technically publishing, but I wouldn't have fancied trying to argue with a Chinese policeperson. For the record I used OSMAnd to search for fast food->McDonalds but in the end I went to KFC and a Vanguard supermarket, where I was mesmerised by a bag of Tesco boiled sweets.

I had no idea there's a solar system view on Google Maps, but anyway there is and you can blast through a cheesy hyperspace effect to wander round the planets and pretend you're some kind of post-human AI.

You’ll only be able to use the space feature—and experience the hyperspace tunneling—on desktop versions of Chrome, but it’s easy to find and use:Go to Google Maps.Click the “Satellite view” button at the lower-left of the screen.Click the super-tiny “Global view” button at the top of the navigation controls in your browser’s lower-right corner.Using either the “-” key, your mouse wheel, or the Google Maps zoom controls, zoom out until you’re in the planetary view of Earth.Select one of the various planets and moons from the list on the left, and you’ll blast through hyperspace to your new destination. Eligible destinations include Mars (to visit Dr. Manhattan), Europa (to recreate the journey of that 2013 sci-fi film), and the International Space Station (to say hello to everyone currently zooming around our planet).

Had to check some old addresses a while before Xmas so wound up going down the rabbithole with streetmaps. INteresting to see the change in places over time. Cos they use photos over a 10 year or higher span of time. So I can move through the streetmaps world and see a number of buildings and things in this area not being there. The local LIDL disappears if you move through the area, so does the KFC . Assume this must be happening in most areas. Also noticed that the street changes that ahppened around my mother's place to prevent people speeding through backstreets come and go depending on which way you approach the street. Think it is possible taht you can press advance in a couple of places p0articularly on wider streets. & they will take you forward into the view from either one year or a very different one.Presumably at some point if they are allowed to continue updating and people's fears of surveillance don't block things there will be a point when they do keep things on a standardised era basis. THough presumably it will only make economic sense to update areas taht have actually physically changed the road layout.BUt like semi trippy to see a road suddenly jump 9 years as you advance down it. Or see yourself jumped to a spot a couple fo roads away as the system has a gap in its photo record.
