My car is in two places simultaneously. I guess their camera-car came by my place when I was home, and my friend's place when I was there.

I'm a little disappointed by the low resolution. I can't even read the sign at the site of my old favorite restaurant, to see if it's changed. Of course it might be a little creepy if you could zoom into peoples windows...

I just discovered that google streetview existed yesterday. Accidentally. I inadvertently clicked something or another trying to see what part of Auckland my new apartment was in when suddenly a vivid, sunny, interactive panorama was presented to me and I was like OMG MY NEW LIFE and it was crazy.

Gathering the imagery for Street View requires quite a bit of driving; as such, we take safety very seriously. Unfortunately, accidents do happen -- as some people have noticed, one of our Street View cars hit a deer while driving on a rural road in upstate New York. Due to several user requests using the "Report a concern" tool, these images are no longer available in Street View.

if anything i think the widespread acceptance, even excitement, is more disturbing than the actual photos - i don't assume my flat will be burgled or that i'll be stalked b/c of it (though if i'd had stalker problems ever i'd be petrified about it) - it just transgresses a basic expectation of privacy for me. ok, any random lunatic could take pictures of my flat and put them on flickr or whatever, but that would still be indefensibly creepy, and this just makes the creepiness so much more official. it's awful.

All the orthodox jews in my neighbourhood must have complained to google, because within weeks of my area going up on streetview, large chunks of the surrounding streets disappeared again. Not whole streets - just bits, 2-5 properties wide.

It then occurred to me each was where a temple or jewish high school was.

I dont understand the paranoia, but eh *shrug*. Its not like the places arent blazingly obviously jewish temples/schools when you pass them on the road!

Dont get me wrong, I know exactly why they'd want to be removed. I just think it's a bit uneccesary - these are very visibly jewish institutions with signage and gates and banners and its not like theyre area 51 or something. Still, I dunno.

Also a picture of a house on an indeterminate date months ago. Aren't churches/synagogues/places of worship marked on maps anyway? Now you can see a picture and see that the big churchy-looking building at the address of a church is actually a church after all.

They took the picture of my house well over a year ago cos the front yard isn't covered in rubbish and weeds, it looks all neat and tidy. I gave up trying to clean it up a long time ago, it was a losing battle.

if you saw someone outside your flat staring at and studying the building - not in a casual, walking-past way, but loitering and looking closely & carefully - would you not be creeped out and discomfited? if i saw that i'd be calling the fucking police. if someone physically did that there's a reasonable expectation that someone would see them, but the thing with google street view is that anyone can do this without you knowing.

apparently there was some furore when this was rolled out in japan - cis sent me links to the debate here and here - cut through the "cultural divisions" argument and plenty of the points are massively otm

also you may not necessarily have had problems with stalkers, or wanted to keep certain people from knowing too much about where you live or work, but it should seem obvious that plenty of people do have to think about such issues.

i looked at my old houses and have no idea when they were taken, if i was living there at the time or not. there were some blurred-face people around, but pretty sure none were me.

surely the whole point of stalking is you have some idea of the stalkee before stalking them? ie not randomly scrolling through streetviews and looking out for blurred-face people... idk, maybe even stalkers are aspie shut-ins these days. but the odds of someone finding out where you live or work from streetviews have got to be pretty small.

If my stalker doesn't know where I live, no problem. If the stalker knows or can find out where I live, that's a problem regardless of streetview. Don't see how this enables anything.

people are focusing too much on actual concrete consequences - i'm not arguing that bad things will definitely happen as a result of this, but it instinctively feels intrusive and uncomfortable, and for people with security concerns, it does absolutely nothing for their peace of mind

It's odd that this weirds so many people out considering people have been for several years totally okay with the idea of putting pictures of their face on the internet, with their name attached, for anyone to see, and even with the notion that it's virtually impossible to stop people from doing so in this day and age. But as soon as houses come into it people freak.

There's another argument to be made about sheer saturation of information, one house among hundreds of thousands of others isn't really that interesting, unless you have a special reason to be interested in it. In which case that's either creepy or not depending on your interest and, as Ledge says, if that reason is creepy then whether you can look at that house on the internet is almost irrelevant seeing as you can turn up there in person any time you want.

it's not about houses vs faces - it's an issue of control. putting photos of myself on the internet is an information flow that i'm 99% in charge of - this is something i have no control whatsoever over.

and turning up in person to do creepy shit and loiter around is absolutely not the same thing as being able to study and look closely on the internet. the first will probably get you arrested, for one thing.

it seems so innocuous tho in terms of actual useful stuff it outputs: bcs it is updated so infrequently it doesn't really give stalkers/thiefs all that much useful information (terrorists/etc it gives more useful info perhaps). compared to something like club cards, e.g, and which seem to me much more invasive of privacy, giving tesco/etc a daily account of everything you buy and letting them target you based on that. but again with these and with facebook I'm giving my explicit consent for the info to be shared. I guess I'm giving google tacit consent by not complaining to them?

But if someone wants to take a photo of your house and put it on the internet without your consent they have been able to do so for years. At least with Google it's accountable to them and you can get it removed.

Actually it took about 30 seconds of Googling to find an unauthorised picture taken of my house with information about its exact location. And I assume it's been there for a while.

What's really annoying about Google Streetview is that it actually restricts itself to streets so there are huge swathes of eg Hampstead Heath that you can't actually see. Including the view from the top of Parliament Hill I think.

I have taken pictures of random people's houses and put them on the internet before (like, every fucking time I go on holiday for one thing). I think that's part and parcel of living in an architecturally striking house, you accept that people are going to stop and look at it and take photos for ages.

lex if you were standing in the window with your willy out then maybe you'd have a point. but there's nothing private about the outside of a house unless you build a big fucking wall around it, always been the case for obvious reasons and google streetview does nothing to change that. Also I'm really worried by the idea that people walking down the public street looking at stuff (with their eyes!) should be arrested! That's the real big brother shit, not this.

you know what i'd love to see? photos of streets where i grew up, but from different eras in the past. you get some of these on the transport for london site, i guess. but its ace, to get a feel for how those areas have changed, especially the ones which are now pedestrianised shopping centre type areas, like my former ends of wimbledon.

Google Street View omits roads not passable by traffic. The market on Electric Avenue prevents traffic access. Same with Ridley Road in Dalston, which is also not covered.

THE VATICAN has again hit back in strong terms at those criticising the Catholic Church over its handling of the sexual abuse of children by priests.

In an interview yesterday a senior Vatican figure, Cardinal Angelo Sodano, said criticism of the Holy See over the issue was “truly incomprehensible”.

random teleporting flaneur. following actual routes - with faster refreshing - would be much better.

I prefer this to the Virtual Road Trip thing above which pretty much does what you want, because:
1. moving between adjacent streetview feels slow and clunky, which saps the joy out of following a route
2. if I'm looking at an unfamiliar city, I don't know which bits are interesting to look at, so I don't want to pick the route myself - I'm quite happy to zap randomly between unknown locations, some of which are central and may contain glimpses of famous landmarks (possibly not from the usual angle) and some of which are pleasingly off the beaten tourist track

I just had a pleasing teleport around SF, which I visited for 4 days in 1999, so it's a good combination of mostly unfamiliar + a little bit of "hey I think we went down the next street across" for me

(but setting the refresh time might be good, though at least you can pause if you get an interesting one, and skip if you don't)

pressing 'x' to stop teleportation wasn't working for me
also, I got stuck on that thing where the camera pans whenever the pointer moves, and couldn't get out of it. (I guess I just don't know the trick; to get out of it I'd left click, which would zoom me in, then I'd have to zoom out etc)

I 'travel' a lot via Google Maps Streetview. Yesterday, I drove down the north coast of Yorkshire to Robin Hood's Bay and then tooled around on the Moors. Later I went from Castellane to Moustiers Ste Marie via the Verdon Gorge.

I used to live on St. Thomas! It was much nicer where I lived (Irish Channel). So weird to go for a run near the levee and see a ship towering way above you.

I don't find NOLA that depressing overall. There are plenty of blighted areas (and the Lower 9th Ward, obviously), but it's deceptive b/c even totally livable and even desirable areas look ramshackle compared to other cities.

Yeh, you're right. It is pretty heartbreaking. I was there about a year ago and along I-10 on the edges of town, there were still several huge apartment complexes (the kind of generic sprawling ones with dozens of 2-4 story buildings) that stood empty and untouched from the day Katrina came through. It's some zombie apocalypse looking stuff :(

I couldn't find the complexes on Street View, but they're like these, but wrecked and falling apart with no one to even demolish them.

This is kind of weird - Google Streetview is usually so good about blurring faces. I've even seen artwork on signs blurred because the mapping thought it was a real face.

But, on the one street in America where you probably would demand to have your face blurred, GSV has been leaving everything out in the open.

I think you can move all over the place if you want. It's got that "return to original location" button that resets everything.

You guys are all cheating. The real rules of this game are that you are not even allowed to look at the screen: a 3rd party must act out the scene via charades and then you throw a dart in the general direction of a map.

Reading the name of a grain elevator is just wayyyyy over the line for me, for example, consider blind people or those without a computer for example.

If there's one thing that 112 years on the planet have taught me, it's that anything worth doing is worth doing "by all means necessary".

For doing this I do a panorama and i zoom but i dont move away from my original location, mostly get scores of around 12K, had 15k occasionally, 16300 is best so far but that came from getting 2 of them within 10 miles

I have been noticing this unintentional Soderbergh filtered way of going from the grainy standard cameras from the 2007 days of yore to the high-def ones of today. Sometimes you'll catch the scenes side-by-side, and can back up and down from one year to the next.

I've gotten the Ketchikan one and nameless dude, so yeah, probably not totally random. But they still seem to give me "road in Australia with no identifying features" a lot.

Kinda neat to find a place on there where it's always Christmas.

I was cruising through some neighborhood - maybe in Baltimore - where the yards had gravestones and the front porches had cobwebs. Of all times they pick to drive the camera around, they pick Halloween.

When did Google Maps get animated 3d driving directions? I guess they are walking and biking too?

Annoying *new* streetview. They've removed the static navigational arrows, so you have to just click on the road to move around. Which is terrible because if you get a road that goes over/under another road you'll end up teleporting.

also horrid huge road labels don't seem to be removable.

hmm, I still have the arrows (although I can't see them unless I look down at my feet)

...and they only allow you to move forwards and backwards, whereas there used to be 4-directional arrows at upcoming intersections. yeah, this is definitely not an improvement.

No, not creepy at all. Nuthin' like being caught in somebody's scope inside a Maryland parking lot.

It drops you in a random location in Street View--anywhere in the world, or limit it to specific countries, cities, etc.

Tool around in Street View looking for clues to your location. (Oh look, a sign for a eucalyptus oil distillery and a street named South Coast Road--southern Australia maybe?)

In another little window, zoom all the way in on a world map and click where you think you are. It will show you how close you were and award points.
