I forgot to take a pic of the duck confit w/ white beans I had at Montsouris last night - damn their cooking is OTM right now and the bulk of their new menu is really hearty winter food.

lunch at Rice for their spectacular drunken noodles - they're one of the few places around here that serves it without green bell peppers, a foodstuff about which I made myself perfectly clear on another thread.

I DIED, Friday, 14 December 2007 22:45 (eighteen years ago)

That looks like it could use some green bell peppers.

HI DERE, Friday, 14 December 2007 22:46 (eighteen years ago)

I wanted some black rice thing for dessert like they have over at Regent Thai but my only options at Rice were mango sticky rice or ice cream. I instantly regretted ordering the green tea ice cream when it came out with raspberry sauce and visible ice crystals. Took two nasty bites and quit.

I DIED, Friday, 14 December 2007 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

and yes, the raspberry sauce was brown.

Walked by the brand new ACKC on the way back so I stopped to check it out, got a couple truffles to hopefully end the lunch on a good note. Orange brandy alexander on the left, blueberry cardamom on the right. They were shit. I've had some great stuff at K!ingsbury Chocolate's location in Alexandria so I'll try ACKC again some other time and hope this was a fluke.

Spicy condiment tray at Rice. Awesome. I should get one of these for my house but with different Uncle Brutha's hot sauces.

I DIED, Friday, 14 December 2007 22:57 (eighteen years ago)

Z S, Saturday, 15 December 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

That was probably an inappropriate comment, sorry. The things you put in your mouth look tasty.

Z S, Saturday, 15 December 2007 19:12 (eighteen years ago)

Ha, I had the same beer yesterday! Although I felt guilty, because I feel some kind of family allegiance to Harer beer instead.

nabisco, Saturday, 15 December 2007 19:43 (eighteen years ago)

When it's available I usually go with the Hakim stout at Ethiopian restaurants (I believe it's brewed by Harar?)

(xpost) ZS, it's both a point of pride and shame for me that I spend a far-too-substantial chunk of my income in eating & drinking (and a couple of these pictures were older).

I DIED, Saturday, 15 December 2007 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

yeah the naan & beyond by yr place is a straight-up disappointment; what the fuck went wrong?

They spent about $2 to remodel the place from when it was a Quiznos and they're using the toasting conveyor belt to make their naan instead of the serious tandoor they have at 17th & L. Also they don't have the crowd volume or veteran staff to be able to turn the stuff out and keep it all fresh. That place was set up to fail, I anticipate they'll be closing soon.

you do NOT like green tea ice cream? U R MENTAH!

Also, did I see two Belgian beers? Kasteel? And what else? What was the Kasteel bier?

nathalie, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 15:27 (eighteen years ago)

I love green tea ice cream! But this stuff was terrible.

The beers were all belgians - Kasteel Dark (dark sour ale w/ cherries), Corsendonk Christmas Ale, and Barbar Winter Bok. There's a newish Belgian restaurant in DC with an absolutely amazing beer selection, better than anywhere else in the US as far as I'm aware.

I DIED, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 15:52 (eighteen years ago)

a newish Belgian restaurant in DC with an absolutely amazing beer selection, better than anywhere else in the US as far as I'm aware.

Should you ever find yourself in Pasadena or Sierra Madre, CA, take yourself to either of the branches of Lucky Baldwin's for a truly excellent selection of Belgian Beers.

Thier Belgian Beer Fest draws from ALL OVER the West Coast. I shit you not. They pull out all the stops with that nonsense, and even though the servers make BANK that week, they hate how busy it is. Typical.

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:24 (eighteen years ago)

I love Corsendonk Pale, how does the Xmas variety compare?

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 19 December 2007 20:26 (eighteen years ago)

It's a lot darker and richer - typical of most Belgian christmas brews it's heavily spiced but it retains more of the typical Corsendonk carbonation than most beers that dark. Drinks like a meal. This is the second time I've had it this season and probably won't be the last, it's very enjoyable. That said, Corsendonk Pale is in a totally different class - damn near perfect beer.

Takeout from across the street last night. Sopressata panini w/ a cup of smoky pork and lentil soup. The place opened in the last couple months and I love it - very hard to find somewhere that cooks like they give a shit for $7.99. Chef used to be sous at 1789 and Palena, so it's got good pedigree.

then it wasn't made right. The sazerac is an amazing cocktail, but it's also one of the hardest to make correctly. Even bartenders I know that love them aren't happy with their versions half the time. Usually to sweet or too much herbsaint.

re: the sazerac, i think the bartender snuck some simple syrup in. it was at a place that takes rye/bourbon very seriously and usually does a great job with cocktails, so i was a bit disappointed.

To be entirely snobbish - if they fuck up any of the following:

Mint julep,
Old Fashioned,
Manhattan,
Sazerac,

then they do NOT take their American whiskies seriously.

BLAM, I will agree with you on the other three but I will give some leeway on the Sazerac, it's just a bitch to balance and can vary greatly depending on which kind of rye & pastis you use.

I DIED, Monday, 7 January 2008 20:39 (seventeen years ago)

a little but of simple syrup in a sazerac is OK in lieu of a sugar cube.

I DIED, Monday, 7 January 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

No, yr way out of my league food & drinks-wise. I feel adventurous if I order mussels, as TZA and I did last week. It was nice, tho; maybe I should go out to dinner more often.

Laurel, Monday, 7 January 2008 20:42 (seventeen years ago)

laurel would you like to accompany us to lupa?

tehresa, Monday, 7 January 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

BLAM, I will agree with you on the other three but I will give some leeway on the Sazerac, it's just a bitch to balance and can vary greatly depending on which kind of rye & pastis you use.

As a former bartender, confirmed whisk(e)y addict, and a lover of all gustatory products of New Orleans, I draw a HARD line on the Sazerac.

If you're going to have it on the menu, especially in a place that "takes bourbon and rye seriously," you'd better be able to serve it up correctly.

But, then again, I sneered at women who ordered any thing that ended in the suffix -tini that wasn't entirely made up of EITHER gin or vodka, vermouth and some garnish.

Flirtini? Chocotini? Pomtini?

How about ShutTheFuckUpTini?

It's good that I'm not a bartender anymore.

lauren, Monday, 7 January 2008 20:50 (seventeen years ago)

(xpost) Yes! Been meaning to get to El Quinto Pino (and back to Casa Mono, I don't normally do so many repeat visits but that that place is always SOLID). I'd like to try Hill Country and/or Fette Sau, too.

I think last time I was in NY I did Pegu Club, Mas Farmhouse, Caffe Falai, Momofuku Ssam, Boqueria, Tasting Room, Lure, Marlowe & Sons, Wells Ales & Lagers, and Bereket.

I DIED, Monday, 7 January 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

I am generally a fiend for them in late summer and disgusted by them the rest of the year

Word. Mama Smith grows really great tomatoes in her garden every year. I credit them with getting me over the "It has to look good to taste good" hang up with fresh produce.

I HATE me some mealy, hothouse 'maters. Give me that sun sweet, juicy, could eat it like a peach late summer tomato. mmmmMMMMMMMM!!!!!!

B.L.A.M., Wednesday, 9 January 2008 18:26 (seventeen years ago)

the tomato was from the on-the-vine 4 pack that peapod offers
i am not a tomato fiend but I ate a whole slice of this one by itself and imagine it would have been pretty delicious with a little salt + pepper and maybe a dab of olive oil

hey, I heard Corduroy was moving and drinks are v cheap before the move? yes?

I DIED, where should I go next for dinner? was at PS7.. not that wild about it. went to Dukem again last week. I should just get a carryout from Dukem about every third day, I would never have to buy groceries.

daria-g, Friday, 25 January 2008 03:56 (seventeen years ago)

cosign on ps7 :\

daria, just go to hook all the time, and ill go with u

69, Friday, 25 January 2008 03:59 (seventeen years ago)

Corduroy is getting rid of their inventory Jan 27-Jan 31, this would be a very good time to go there. They'll be doing a limited menu.

daria, I had cocktails at PS7 last week (after running into QUINCIE at Proof) and they were great! Haven't eaten there in hella long though, so I'm trusting you and 69.

If you haven't dined at Proof, you should.

In defense of PS7 it was restaurant week (end of) and i had a glass of malbec, not a cocktail.

daria-g, Saturday, 26 January 2008 08:24 (seventeen years ago)

I will eat all these Corduroys and Corks. Let's pick dates, yo.

quincie, Saturday, 26 January 2008 14:04 (seventeen years ago)

If I'm feeling decent I'll probably do Corduroy this Sunday. Tuesday will be Cork and also it's the rollout of the new Tuesday night cocktail list at Bar Pilar, which looks very impressive.

I DIED, Saturday, 26 January 2008 14:18 (seventeen years ago)

How was the marrow?

roxymuzak, Saturday, 26 January 2008 20:02 (seventeen years ago)

the idea of a special list for tuesdays makes me think i should move to dc

tehresa, Saturday, 26 January 2008 20:09 (seventeen years ago)

The downside of the special Tuesday list is that it's not available the other 6 nights of the week, which makes me wish I lived in NY or SF or anywhere with some real cocktail bars (it will be a very different situation here in DC by the end of the year, though).

I DIED, Saturday, 26 January 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

The marrow hit the spot - cold night, little scoops of barely solid fat on toasted bread with a sprinkle of sel gris, perfect. Made up for the mussels not being very good despite looking delicious. And the marrow is, I think, $7.50? Good deal.

BurgerTime looks like a magical heavenly place

Curt1s Stephens, Sunday, 9 March 2008 20:43 (seventeen years ago)

what are the toppings on 2 and 3?
which was best?

tehresa, Sunday, 9 March 2008 21:18 (seventeen years ago)

1. Morton's: great beef with a nearly raw center (SO GREAT), cheddar and horseradish. The cheese was too thick and crappy. The meat was amazing while everything else was eh, but it still made me woozy with the heft and deliciousness.

2. Restaurant K: blue cheese and pico de gallo, this was probably the best overall. Juicy, most natural tasting beef, the blue cheese was high enough quality to have been served as part of a cheese plate.

3. Nage: consistently great burger at a seafood place a block from my office. Ground prime rib w/ smoked onions, gouda, and a little bit of mushroom duxelles for some umami. Despite not looking so great, these are the only fries out of all the ones shown that were even halfway decent.

4. BLT Steak: Very good, but not exciting. Fries looked great but it was an old batch. They have great popovers to start the meal, though (pictured near the beginning of the thread). Execution is kind of spotty.

5. Cafe Saint-Ex: Nice flavor, not too badly priced, sweet potato fries always sound good there but were :(

Out of these, Restaurant K was probably the best. I'll have to try Morton's some more so I can attempt to callibrate the toppings for best flavor.

3 small quesadillas - one w/ huitlacoche, one poblano pepper, one pork carnitas.

PRESENTATION, PEOPLE!

This was seriously the worst-looking dish I've had in recent memory. At least downscale places are deliciously messy, this just appeared forlorn. For a semi-upscale mexican place (Casa Oaxaca), the miniscule 4-color bell pepper dice was just insulting to the food and the scoop of sour cream was unattractive enough without having grazed the corner of one of the quesadillas.

The poblano pepper was OK, the huitlacoche and carnitas were excellent. Which was kind of shame, because they deserved much better plating. That food looked GLUM.

69, Thursday, 24 April 2008 19:03 (seventeen years ago)

yeah same here - I didn't go to lunch today until 2 so I went to breadline because I figured I could avoid the lunch rush. I did, but on the other hand the falafel and chickpeas had obviously been fried some time earlier. But available outdoor seating made up for that.

Yes I am pleased to report I was part of this lunch of deliciousness. The chef brought out the boudin (which was not on the menu) just for I DIED because he said it would cure his hangover! It tasted like PORKY AIR in the best possible way.

quincie, Sunday, 27 April 2008 22:14 (seventeen years ago)

wow, that looks so good.

I DIED, i have determined that the taking lunch break unofficial policy @ my little webmonkey corner of the office is.. well, OK, but bad form to do frequently because most people have lunch at their desks, since each of us is only on for 8 hours a day, so if you take time midday, best stick around later? There's a lot unspoken and I've probably only figured out 10% of it. going to take a while to sort things out.

daria-g, Monday, 28 April 2008 01:35 (seventeen years ago)

god i hate america. take a lunch break! we all work too hard. i just had german house guests and trying to explain my work/school/eating at desk or in class all the time because there's no time because there's always something that HAS to be done was really funny.

tehresa, Monday, 28 April 2008 01:37 (seventeen years ago)

yeah I take long lunches sometimes because I work plenty of overtime and at a certain point it's like "well what the hell difference does another 45 minutes make"

I actually faked a conference call between two other meetings yesterday so I didn't have to eat with the clients and consultants. Instead I ran across the street and had a delicious pork shoulder sandwich w/ green sauce and peppers on the most perfect ciabatta I've ever had.

http://img30.picoodle.com/img/img30/4/4/29/f_porkshouldem_cc9cb85.jpg

okay, multi-day NYC visit coming up for real in a few weeks. All y'all please help me narrow down/expand the list of places I'm looking to try:

Fiamma

Tia Pol
El Quinto Pino

Eletteria
Radegast Hall
Hideout
Jake Walk
Wildwood
Hill Country

(modified list from upthread)

gabbneb, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:33 (seventeen years ago)

Fiamma over Alto for sure - I've got mad allegiance to Fabio Trabocchi for his work at Maestro here (still the best meal I've ever had) and I'd like to give Fiamma a shot.

I DIED, Thursday, 1 May 2008 14:03 (seventeen years ago)

gabbneb, Thursday, 1 May 2008 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

if his approach is similar to when he was at Maestro, and I'm guessing it is, then it's definitely something I'll go back for. In my couple of meals there I did find the meat dishes too rich and the weakest parts, but seriously brilliant pasta, fish, and vegetable preparations.

2. Baby Burger w/black truffle butter, red onion marmalade (medium well, but still decent)
3. BBQ Pork Pupusa w/napa cabbage slaw (I would eat 100 of these)
4. Crab Pot Sticker w/sriracha aioli (not enough sriracha)
5. Risotto Fritter w/carrot & green curry (delicious, on par w/ 2 Amys)

1. Liptaur on Crostini w/ quark & goat cheese spread, micro salad (this sounds made up. tasted like crap)
2. Steak Tartare w/Dijon mustard, capers, parmesan cheese tuile (excellent BUT the cheese tuille is too thick and a bit overpowering and I wish the tartare had a coarser grind)
3. Beer Battered Corn Dog w/chorizo sausage, whole grain mustard (yeah of course it was delicious)
4. Venison Meat Pie w/fennel pollen, garlic, carrot (best item of all, my dream empanada)

totes.

that tagliatelle DOES look awesome, though.

tehresa, Monday, 5 May 2008 19:16 (seventeen years ago)

the tuna burger wasn't actually overdone, it was just a very light pink grade of very mealy tuna!

The tagliatelle at Spezie is really one of my favorite things in DC. If I ever went vegetarian(hahahaha) I think I'd just alternate between that and their mushroom ravioli in pistachio sauce.

Actual weight after bun and condiments, 15.4 pounds! Two heads of lettuce, 6 tomatoes, 2 red onions, 4 whole pickles and a river of our mojo, ketchup and mustard. Also comes with a bottle of Maalox®. If you can eat it in one sitting it’s free.

Beginnings of a dosa at Biryani Corner, which took over the Naan & Beyond in the base of my building. I won't say I had high hopes, but I thought it would at least be better than that terribly disappointing Naan & Beyond. But then as the guy fucked up this dosa (griddle too hot, got stuck) and the next TWO attempts turned out the same way. Got my money back and went across the street to Aioli where I got carryout of the daily pizza special...

Hot & sweet sopressata with some other type of meat buried underneath on a thin crust. Delicious! That makes three places on that stretch of P st where you can get a decent pizza. This crust on this one is a bit unorthodox (more cracker-like) but on the whole was somewhat more satisfying than alberto's or pizzeria paradiso.

popover, old bay fries, poncey cuban sandwich (pressed pork belly, speck, pickles, gruyere)

It is totally worth it to pay exhorbitant amounts of $ for this meal because it is delicious and they have a great walnut bar top and they were playing Nu Shooz and Cameo.

There is a new crepe place about 100 feet from my apartment (Go-Go Crepes, which led me to have unrealistically high expectations for the soundtrack). This is the second time I've ordered there - this one's feta, spinach, and onions and was pretty good. $7, took about 3 minutes, it'll give me a new quick dinner option.

they changed the open-faced pickled shrimp sandwich at Restaurant K - it used to have more cornbread and have a red chili aioli. Now it's got preserved lemon and arugula and is a much lighter and better dish. The preserved lemons were a bit much, though.
