Any picture of Minneapolis' skyline dominated by the fugly City Center tower can't be considered *that* beautiful ... though the picture is pretty great.

(it kinda has the Dallas thing.. really pretty from faraway, but once you're there... um)

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:02 (eighteen years ago)

Houston >>>>>>>> Dallas

I'm wondering if Dallas has been avoided because it's the obvious choice for Eric?

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:03 (eighteen years ago)

Minneapolis-centric aside: I only just now learned that the guy who designed the beyond awesome Wells Fargo Center also designed the Petronas Towers.

(x-post) you're talking Houston vs. Dallas skylines, right?

xpost to Eric: no, talking about the cities themselves.

Dallas skyline >>>>>>> Houston skyline (although both are nice)

however

Houston >>>>>>>>> Dallas

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 05:08 (eighteen years ago)

Phoenix sucks but the smog makes for pretty sunsets:

Call me a rockist but a lot of these are fucking horrendous. Lurid overcoloured epic cloudscapes, just say no. The city should be spectacular enough to shine in its own right.

... but I think that Chicago spire is hideous.

Eric H., Friday, 28 December 2007 03:55 (seventeen years ago)

Oh NO you didn't.

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 03:58 (seventeen years ago)

It looks like a big pig cock and doesn't match. Chicago's phalluses are far less animalistic in nature.

Eric H., Friday, 28 December 2007 04:24 (seventeen years ago)

Match? That is kind of the point (no pun intended)--that it should be unique. Right now Chicago has zero spires in its skyline, so it will be a nice addition.

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 04:48 (seventeen years ago)

Certainly more interesting than this:

Eric H., Friday, 28 December 2007 04:52 (seventeen years ago)

At the risk of engaging you while you're talking nonsense, Chicago's skyline can by no stretch of the imagination be described as "matching."

Jesse, Friday, 28 December 2007 05:00 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I'm obviously joking around, but I really am not a fan of that building.

It looks like the view from the top of the 'Cock, looking South.

Jesse, Saturday, 5 July 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

blueski's must be Barcelona. Are those the Gaudi buildings at Park Guell?

nickn, Monday, 7 July 2008 03:48 (seventeen years ago)

jesse, i guess it could be except you don't see any north michigan ave landmarks like the trib tower or the wrigley building. i was thinking maybe it was taken from somewhere around the tribune or nbc plaza but i can't tell.

but a second look reveals there's no way a photo could be taken at that angle from the top o' the 'cock.

burt - looks like Paterson viewed from Garret Mountain (top two). Why a craphole? Def. a more picturesque city than Newark or JC. I dunno - I was born/raised there myself and will defend it always.

Oh yeah, Paterson's definitely a nice looking city, and the same with Passaic (particularly Passaic Park)... it's a mix of 19th century Victorians and old Tudors, stone Beaux-Art revival, and whatever stuff from the 18th century is left. Plus there's some great nature mixed in, and it's all been pretty much untouched from development.

I always said those two cities are ripe for revival due to its rich architecture and proximity to NYC, but the corruption is wayyy too extreme and so they're both messes infrastructure and crime wise.

Actually, I should make it interesting. it is interesting. It's just not epic and modern like these.

I've tried finding a good picture of Beijing, but haven't been able to find one. Beijing has beautiful buildings and landmarks for sure, but as a whole city it's a stylistic mess. Nothing coheres or works as a complimentary skyline. Now Shanghai, on the other hand, does work. It looks like something out of a fifties sci-fi film.

Matt DC, Friday, 22 August 2008 14:31 (seventeen years ago)

It's a great little town with the cheese factory just outside (all-Gruyere fondue is awesome decadence), and a beautiful castle on the top of the hill.

Oddly, it's also the location of HR Giger's museum/studio, and a bar he designed, which is worth it for the WTF factor

Matt DC, Friday, 22 August 2008 15:17 (seventeen years ago)

I went in late Sept and it was really nice. But even in winter it's awesome. Some towns (especially ski/resort towns like Zermatt, Gstaad, etc), are actually more lively in the middle of winter.

snoball, Saturday, 30 August 2008 09:33 (seventeen years ago)

OK, they are beautiful. One of my favourite things about The Apprentice is the aerial shots of London between scenes, and one of my favourite things is the view over London you get flying in to London City Airport from the north, over the Emirates/the City/St Pauls, looking right down the Thames then banking to go past Canary Wharf. Those photos are like a better version of doing some of that in real life.
