I still insist that the deadline is tonight. This getting the month of January "free" still irks me.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 15:41 (eighteen years ago)

I'll take full advantage of it.

woah ... Carol Channing is 1/4 black?

sexyDancer, Monday, 31 December 2007 17:11 (eighteen years ago)

I don't like getting the whole month of January free. But let's give people a week to make their picks, at which point I'll put 'em all in my spreadsheet and any changes after that will be void.

jaymc, Monday, 31 December 2007 17:24 (eighteen years ago)

Meant to add an "either" at the end of that first sentence.

jaymc, Monday, 31 December 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

So, deadline January 7.

jaymc, Monday, 31 December 2007 17:25 (eighteen years ago)

Mr. Snrub, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:34 (seventeen years ago)

can we have a clarification on the rules again - i think you get points for the # of years below 100 of the dededent, right? not the total # of dead people on your list (which is how rotten.com tallies its results). in other words, putting 99 year old Manoel de Oliveira on yer list is hardly worth it.

gershy, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:42 (seventeen years ago)

Well this isn't morbid at all.

The Reverend, Saturday, 5 January 2008 03:43 (seventeen years ago)

jaymc, what's the ruling on people who aren't on the rotten.com deadpool site? Dom has three names that aren't listed there.

I'd really prefer it if they were on Rotten.com, but since Pleasant Plains started this thread and didn't mention it, I'm not sure I can do anything about it. Although if Dom or anyone else (I haven't created deadpool08.xls yet, so I don't know if others have picked questionably famous people, too) could be persuaded to change their picks, that'd be cool.

jaymc, Saturday, 5 January 2008 06:55 (seventeen years ago)

Is there a rule about picking people with known terminal illnesses? (not that I had anyone in mind, I just wondered).

Trayce, Saturday, 5 January 2008 07:05 (seventeen years ago)

The rule for terminal illnesses is "that's a good pick."

Fred Nerk has a few that aren't on the Rotten.com list either. I went ahead and registered my list here and made some changes:

Elizabeth Edwards
Bo Diddley
Ronnie Biggs
Fidel Castro
BB King
Suzanne Pleshette
Leontyne Price
Ariel Sharon
Britney Spears
Elizabeth Taylor

Rock Hardy, Saturday, 5 January 2008 07:13 (seventeen years ago)

John Howard (malaise)

You used to be able to ask rotten.com to add people if you wanted, I guess you still can if you want British people who don't register highly enough on American radar to warrant a mention. We still doing the 100 minus age at death points scoring though?

emil.y, Saturday, 5 January 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)

PP, that wasn't a diss or anything. My initial reaction when you started the thread was "Oh, maybe we can do this without relying on Rotten.com." The main thing I liked about Rotten was that it had people's final lists, but I forgot about that was also a good way to determine level of fame.

jaymc, Saturday, 5 January 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)

Level of US fame.

Dom Passantino, Saturday, 5 January 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)

Also, did you know that you can pick Drew Daniel? It might be a bad idea to encourage ilx0rs to choose him, though.

emil.y, Saturday, 5 January 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

no dis taken. I was just saying that just because I started the thread, you should still be the cryptkeeper.

Pleasant Plains, Saturday, 5 January 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)

I don't have a problem with any of Dom's non-Rotten picks -- maybe if they aren't listed at rotten.com, the rule could be to cite their wikipedia page to establish birthdate and level of fame.

admrl, Saturday, 5 January 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Hunh. I was thinking anyone with a Wiki page that lists a birth date would be fair game. I didn't realize it was some other "thing". I do not want to set anything up with rotten.com, I just like being in the jaymc.xls "deadpool_08" worksheet.

I'm finally creating the .xls and just noticed that emil.y had picked Koko, the sign-language gorilla. I like it, but obviously, this presents some problems w/r/t our points system. Does anyone have problems with changing the formula for Koko to 54 minus her age, instead of 100 minus her age? 54 is the age at death of the oldest gorilla that ever lived.

jaymc, Monday, 21 January 2008 21:55 (seventeen years ago)

In that case, can I start picking former Kentucky Derby winners?

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 21 January 2008 21:58 (seventeen years ago)

average gorilla life-span is 25-30 years, for humans we're tacking on 25% (lifespan ~80) - so subtract from 37-38?

milo z, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:02 (seventeen years ago)

Maybe just an even 50?

Casuistry, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:05 (seventeen years ago)

I'm not 100% cool with nonhuman picks, but if it's allowed, definitely 54 instead of 100. I didn't think about the lifespan thing until just now.

xpost -- milo OTM. We're not counting points back from Jeanne Calment's age (or even my grandmother's).

Rock Hardy, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:10 (seventeen years ago)

average gorilla life-span is 25-30 years

That's in the wild, not in captivity.

jaymc, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

Also, global human lifespan is 67 years, not 80 -- although with celebrities it's obviously higher.

jaymc, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:16 (seventeen years ago)

(Which is to say, there's not really any good scientific way to do this.)

jaymc, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:18 (seventeen years ago)

Are we really talking about adding animals to the Dead Pool? What if I nominate Dorothy the Goldfish or the cat from "Sabrina"? We're going to have to do calculations for all those too.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:23 (seventeen years ago)

I am opposed to animals in the dead pool. The usual rules I play to are that only humans are allowed, and to classify as "famous" the person's death has to be reported on by one news agency.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:27 (seventeen years ago)

I could really go either way on this. I don't think I would want to open up the Dead Pool to animals in the future, but this sort of seemed like an anomalous case, and Koko is on Rotten.com, so I thought maybe it would be OK.

Maybe emil.y should pick someone else, though.

jaymc, Monday, 21 January 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry Simon, deadline has passed for this year.

Only participant whose list featured no candidates picked by anyone else: Casuistry

God fucking hell, isn't that the way.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:08 (seventeen years ago)

And yet it's not like they're all obscure picks. It's a more interesting list than most people's.

jaymc, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:21 (seventeen years ago)

Obviously I was thinking JTT would be his generation's Heath Ledger.

Casuistry, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:28 (seventeen years ago)

More like you picked Tom instead of Huck.

jaymc, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:31 (seventeen years ago)

ailsa, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

No Winehouse?

Eazy, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:34 (seventeen years ago)

She was picked, but only by one person (limón).

jaymc, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:36 (seventeen years ago)

Sorry, I only just noticed the debate about my pick. I figured that since it was on Rotten it would be okay (and I'd get a few sneaky bonus points), but would people prefer me to pick a human? And can that human be Heath Ledger?

emil.y, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 01:10 (seventeen years ago)

Haha. No.

jaymc, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 02:59 (seventeen years ago)

Well, I don't really have any ideas, so can I go for Saul Kripke? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saul_Kripke

He's certainly famous in philosophy circles, is younger than I thought and apparently not dead. I'll be miffed if Koko goes, though.

Dammit, I chose the wrong first lady.

Margaret Truman was Harry's daughter.

I was referring to Ladybird Johnson last year, obviously....

JTS, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:29 (seventeen years ago)

A whole documentary about one person's illness? That had to be super exciting.

Rock Hardy, Tuesday, 5 February 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

Butz, Former Agriculture Secretary, Dies

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) — Earl L. Butz, an outspoken U.S. agriculture secretary forced from office in 1976 for making a racist joke and once a dean at Purdue University, died Saturday. He was 98.

She's one of the longest-serving stars in one of the most popular TV shows over here. Also, ITV are quite fond of making cheap telly.

More like Dom Passantino is good at googling "celebrities with cancer."

Murcer, who had been suffering from headaches and a lack of energy according to the New York Daily News, was diagnosed with a brain tumor on Christmas Eve, 2006, and underwent surgery on December 28, 2006, at the The University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. On January 10, 2007, it was announced that the tumor was malignant.

total mormon cockblock extravaganza (jaymc), Monday, 29 December 2008 18:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah. 20 may be an excess, 15 seems to be better... it'd allow for more deaths during the year, plus it'd make the circle of picks wider, so next year it's not every Britisher picking Bobby Robson and every American picking whicheverthefuck US sports figure is being wheeled off his deathbed to pick up a lifetime achievement award this year.
