― That one guy that hit it and quit it, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:00 (eighteen years ago)
I'm not a fan: pubs charging just to get in the door, big queues at the bar, woohoo another year and got nothing done. If you're going to a party you're okay as long as you remember to stock up on booze and cigs. Anything else: what's the point?
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:01 (eighteen years ago)
But spending the evening in playing Mario Party with the kids = classic.
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:02 (eighteen years ago)
very very cheesy tv (xp)

New Year's Eve = Amateur's Night
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:03 (eighteen years ago)
My annoyance is the PRESSURE: too many people decide that it must must MUST be the most fabulous night of forever, and it never will be, because EVERYONE wants it to be fabulous, and so it's like it's everyone's birthday on the same night, and the sheer level of attention placed on Having The Best Time Ever turns the whole thing into an awful chore.
― nabisco, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:04 (eighteen years ago)
well i'm going round with friends to drink and play pro evo 2008 long into the small hours = good times, minimal expenditure
― Just got offed, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)
you guys should try actually having fun
― Jordan, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:05 (eighteen years ago)
Nabisco explained why without using the word "hate" as often as I would've! Thank you nabisco.
― Abbott, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:06 (eighteen years ago)
That is the thing Jordan, it is all about TRYING to have fun.
― Abbott, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)
I have NYE date <-- hoping all the pressure cancels itself out <-- so not gonna happen
― bnw, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:07 (eighteen years ago)
Fun can't be forced, it is a shy beast.
I dunno, my friends rent out a small neighborhood bar every year, charge maybe $5 at the door (so the bar can provide some snacks and champagne), and we hook up an iPod for the night (complete with the "musicians who died this year" playlist). Usually a pretty good time.

This might be the first year I go to bed before midnight.
Only one more year to go before we're done with those 20-0X glasses.
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:11 (eighteen years ago)
Oh man, that is kind of a curse! Happy birthday, though! But then I actually feel kinda the same way about my birthday, so possibly having them on the same night would be kinda two birds / one stone! I am using exclamation points!
My worst New Year's Eve turnout was ... I think 2001? Because I got roped into paying a bunch of money to go to some giant party, but by the time we bought tickets there were only VIP slots available, but then everyone got the VIP tickets, which means that the line to get drinks in the VIP section was about 45 minutes long (I got TWO DRINKS, ALL NIGHT), whereas the general area was totally empty and you could get drinks straight away, but then we were apparently too important for them to let us go over and do that. If I could remember which friend instigated the giant-party plan, I would fire off a really angry retrospective email right now. (And yet the night was a fun one, to be honest.)

FUCK THE HATERS
― elmo argonaut, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:14 (eighteen years ago)
hahaha wow. i think one of my winners would be the year i had to fly out to philly for my grandmother's funeral, then flew back home to rochester at like 10 pm, rushed home from the airport, changed, went to gay club where i drank as fast as i could to make up for lost time, new year's toast, went to other bar where i was served a pint glass sized long island which then led me to stand outside in the snow with no coat to talk to boy on the phone for an hour. then my roommate drove me home and i puked. great times.
― tehresa, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:15 (eighteen years ago)
oh that was an xpost to nabisco
Actually, I've had some really good New Year's this century. The worst one may have been going into '04 since my future wife was in New York and I was stuck at a backyard party in Little Rock.
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:16 (eighteen years ago)
the best NY was probably a party at my friend's house...we had a sit-down dinner w/seafood gumbo, then a dance party and a spontaneous second line parade through the neighborhood at midnight, then more dancing. ice cream sundaes for breakfast.
― Jordan, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)
Best NYE = C4rry 0n Up the Ch4rts celebration party in pub + shroomz.
― Noodle Vague, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:25 (eighteen years ago)
Wife + me have been a bit too slack in inviting ppl to our yearly party this time, which combined with 1) lots of people here being sick this xmas, and 2) many of our friends having become parents last couple of years, augurs a rather reduced turnout. Totally fine by me personally really, just hope those who do come don't get all disappointed or anything.

― blueski, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:40 (eighteen years ago)
NYE is a great bonus to an event you'd otherwise care about a lot, but as an end unto itself is pretty ignorable
― gabbneb, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:42 (eighteen years ago)
pros: there are usually better bands and bills in town, and also the bar might have food.
― Jordan, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:43 (eighteen years ago)
We've just returned from a cider farm having purchased a 5 gallon barrel of the roughest, cloudiest fermented apple juice somerset has to offer.
That combined with JungleBook dance mat on the PS2 and a rousing game of Articulate guarantees a low pressure, relatively inexpensive evening.
Wish I'd been able to find GuitarHero3 in town earlier tho.
― Upt0eleven, Monday, 31 December 2007 18:57 (eighteen years ago)
I now pretty much refuse to do anything that isn't a house party these days. A truckload of booze will probably help as well.
― Matt DC, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:00 (eighteen years ago)
House parties are pretty great, especially when the floor caves in underneath the dancers.
― Pleasant Plains, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:02 (eighteen years ago)

― gabbneb, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:30 (eighteen years ago)
fuck nye. so overhyped. i dont really get why the passing of one year to the next is such a big deal to begin with. but i like the socialising aspect. the paying extortionate prices to get in bars or clubs and get even more extortionate drinks, not so much. which is why im going to a house party this year. the pressure to pull at nye is more intense than the pressure to have fun. which is why i dont give a shit about nye this year. tis just another party.
― veryloggedout, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:31 (eighteen years ago)
july 4 imposes a communal obligation rather than an individual one
― gabbneb, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)
yeah, july 4th mandates grilling out so it pretty much wins over anything.
― Jordan, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:32 (eighteen years ago)
Some great stuff on this thread. Nabisco's brilliant "everyone's birthday at once" and Pleasant Plains' correct assessment of New Year's Eve as "amateur night' both eloquently sum up my hatred for the pointless holiday itself.
But make the best of it, dudes! Twilight Zone, Law and Order: Criminal Intent AND Honeymooners marathons! Stay in, drink up, watch TV, zone out - fall asleep before midnight if you can.

― Z S, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:34 (eighteen years ago)
Abbott otm. NYE is the holiday when all the things you normally do for fun when you are feeling frisky are transformed into mandatory activities that are almost certain to feel anticlimactic and disappointing in the context of New Fucking Year's Eve Fer Chrissake. it gets a little better around your late 20s and then tails off again.
― Aimless, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:37 (eighteen years ago)
It looks like I may well stay at home and watch DVDs alone tonight, as plans fell through. But I don't hate NYE. Hating NYE is surely as silly as loving it.
― Daniel Giraffe, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:39 (eighteen years ago)
hmm. i am, interestingly and not necessarily by choice (although it'll be a damn sight better than many of the alternatives), spending a large part of it with two (hard-drinking) septuagenarians and a (teetotal) octogenarian. rock! roll! more rock! ooh, where's me slippers!
happy new year, ILE.
― grimly fiendish, Monday, 31 December 2007 19:45 (eighteen years ago)
I used to try to spend NYE in a different city every year - was able to for 6 years running, but yeah forced fun = no fun. This year my daughter and her guy are getting our extra-loud apartment over the clubs while Mr. Jaq and I repair to a quiet hotel room with a bottle of champz and a giant jacuzzi, after I make us all a tasty roast chicken dinner.
Happy, prosperous, adventure-filled but low-drama 2008 to all.

― mehlt, Monday, 31 December 2007 21:31 (eighteen years ago)
NYE is fine and all but I'm skipping my sole NYE party invite t'nite 'cause I just drove from New Mexico -> SF and I'm a zombie.
― libcrypt, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:06 (eighteen years ago)
if you let the rest of the world get to you NYE can easily be shit. I allow this to happen for the whole Xmas buildup and climax (HOW DO I PICK UP SCROUGARS? see what I did there) but NYE is always a laugh. I just loaded up on beer and liquor and prosecco for the after-party at my place but I have to head back out to replenish the wine arsenal. Be safe!
― El Tomboto, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:10 (eighteen years ago)

Best NYE story I have is from the second or third time me + the crew went to the Black Cat shindig and Tony was all psyched up to kiss this one girl next to him at the ball drop, he turns, fully prepared to be the tall dark handsome stranger for all time, and she immediately yaks on the floor. I would say that's where his descent turned into a full-on spiral but that's just some sub-easton ellis schmaltz
― El Tomboto, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:22 (eighteen years ago)
Tom, I can't decide if that is horrible or awesome.
My Y2K new year was spent with a friend who hosted a "nineteenth century" party. She made us read poems from the 19th century out loud. She also made a plum pudding with odd things hidden in it (the one that I remember best is "a small piece of a rag" - if you found that one, you were "the slut.") The best part about the plum pudding is that half of the things she allegedly baked into it were never found, including a small piece of lead.
And... guess who is hosting the party again this year? Yes, same woman.
― Sara R-C, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:23 (eighteen years ago)
dammit, xpost
anyway to those who are concerned Tony is ok he's just not living up to his potential.
― El Tomboto, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:27 (eighteen years ago)
Jaymc, is there a "musicians who died" collection of mp3s floating about somewhere? Because that would be interesting.
― Casuistry, Monday, 31 December 2007 22:28 (eighteen years ago)
Y2K:
Went to this house party that was in this dark two-room cinder-block house. There must've been 100 people in this 600 sq. ft space. People were outside, throwing empty gallon-sized wine jugs onto Markham Street.
Of course the cops showed up. Dudes were getting thrown up against cars. People were flipping the cops off through the windows, screaming "You can't come in, PIGS!" It was so loud in there, and here I was, just trying to keep a steady hold on my beer.
Somewhere along the line, I noticed that the lock on the door wasn't in the doorknob, but was an actual padlock. Somehow, I realized that if that lock got locked, I'd be stuck in this pit for the rest of the night.
So my friend and I made a drunken run for it, cops be damned. We pushed everyone to the side and edged out the door.
Outside, it was serenity. The cops were just hanging out like it was a doughnut shop, laughing at the punk rockers flipping them off.
We made our way down to my car. Went home and laughed at Phish playing in Florida. An hour later, we returned to the house party to find everyone gone, like it was Jamestown or something. My 12-pack was still stashed under the tree I hid it under, and we moved on to the next house party.

this thread was a nice read. i hate NYE as well, and i think i'm about alone (except for my partner whom i live with - so that's nice).
my problem is i always feel like i'm supposed to be doing something special or symbolic, even though i hate being out (amateur night is what we call it, too).
our usual hang-out-on-the-holiday friends are in vegas this year, so i'm thinking this year we will cook a spaghetti dinner, stay in, watch some netflix, have some lambic, make some love, and call it a night. the fact that this is so appealing to me, makes me feel old.

My y2k: with then-GF at her sister's house in cleveland, helping the sister's landlord set off fireworks in the street until the cops rolled up.
Cops left, and landlord promptly went back to lighting shit off.
Most of my NYEs are banal affairs. My good ones are the one I got paid for running a show, or when we saw the Yo La Tengo NYE shindig in detroit.
Tonight i'm still at the parents house in TN. May go into knoxville for fun, but probably not, having spent every night since Boxing Day in michigan running up a large bar tab and breathing in other people's cigarrettes. Ann Arbor lags behind portland in terms of indoor air breathability. Tonight would be a great night for playing Wii over at the friends, but they're three timezones away, so oh well.
My new year's day will consist of me finally arriving at portland just before midnight, then having to go back to work 8 hours later. Hooray!

Unfortunately I didn't make it to bed by 11:30 as I had planned, but it's not that bad. I missed the ball dropping because I was enamoured in producing, ironically enough, some very 2002/3 sounding microhouse.
Bringing in the new year in style at least.

for the first time in about 3 years I didn't do shit for new years. I'm in a bad mood, tired, and just don't feel like partying until the weekend.
Hung with a friend who was sick and he petered out at 10:30.

Happy new year! Mine is far from happy tonight. I have a stomach bug and can't step more than a couple of feet from the bathroom. Was supposed to be hanging with fam and DJing and going to parties. I was up all night last night with a vomiting child. This may be the worst new year's I've ever had. Just watching Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve by myself on the couch (like I have done some years) was way better than this. I'm going to try to not take this as a bad omen for 2008. Christmas was lots of fun though and I went to a great party the other night. I'm going to try to remember that party as my happy new year's event.

But what if they keep going with this indefinitely in various ill-conceived ways? Like for 2010, there's still two zeros for eyes to go in and then 2011, they could maybe fit an eye in the round part of the 2, etc. I am very curious about how their gonna work this one out. Another reason to keep on living, I suppose.

I had so much fun performing a show on NYE last year...Tonight I just walked around in the cold, acted uncomfortable at a party of friends and went home with a headache, depressed about the past six months and my lack of accomplishments. But now it's a new year, and I can create some resolution, right?!
I'm temporarily quitting the Internet so that I can finally get started and finish a project.

what he said. house party at some friends' flat in marylebone, walked up to primrose hill for midnight to watch fireworks go off across all of london (stunning, seriously, made even more fun by not being in the middle of the masses in trafalgar square), back to the party having accumulated a bunch more people.
i felt like crap all night and left at 2.30 though :/

i was working, "on call" at home. listened to the sounds of a party going on upstairs, people going "whooooo wooo! WOO!" i both hated and envied them. at one point i almost went upstairs to check it out (if my phone rang i could dash outside to take the call), to the point where i even put on my shoes and had a hand on the door knob.. but i bottled it.

I had a great one, people round to ours early evening for champagne and, erm, 'beer science' then off to a party in Crystal Palace where we were the only people there not dressed like we were from a Parisian circus in 1923. Lots of dancing, enormous level of booze consumption, hugged lots of strangers, collapsed about 6am.
I now feel beyond shite, though.

ate mussels, played a really big show, ate a rice sandwich, made out with some girl. for some reason things didn't feel especially "new yearsy" (maybe 'cause i was really busy with show stuff) but i had a great time.

I went to a goth club, it was 42 degrees that afternoon (107F), so thankfuklly the club had great aircon and the heat kept a lot of wankers out of the city. Free champers, free food, and goth/industrial music (inc some punk version of Auld Lang Syne and a snog from my boi at midnight) made it a pretty fun night. Not mindblowingly awesome but nice and relaxed and fun.

ditched by dude friend for another girl; there goes NYE kiss. forgot it was midnight because we were dancing to "funkytown." bought tinfoil frog sculpture from man on street. drank a lot of whiskey. passed out sometime after 2, woke up at 8:30 and somehow managed to be at breakfast at 9:30.
best NYE was still 1999 into 2000, senior year of high school, smoking unbelievable amounts of marijuana, ridiculous jam session and singalong, in a hunting lodge in backwoods maine.

Thx! Time spent making costume: probably about six days. Time spent wearing the full thing: less than half an hour (couldn't eat or drink with head on).
Robot dancing to Daft Punk wearing robot costume = AWESOME. I had an epiphany, a whole new understanding of the Daft Punk programme. It really is robot music for robots (even if it works for people too).
Sadly the plan to have martini on tap inside the costume body didn't come off (had a camelbak full of martini but couldn't manage to put the costume on over the top of the rucksack).
― ledge, Wednesday, 2 January 2008 12:00 (eighteen years ago)
Great costumes!
We sensibly stayed at home, had a couple of friends over and drank vast lakes of beer until about 6am, by which time I was drunk enough to go to bed still wearing 1 contact lense.
Went for greasy spoon breakfast and somehow seemed to avoid getting a hangover, although I'm suffering a bit today, delayed reaction/having to get up at 7am for the first time in nearly 2 weeks :(

I've realized that this year, due to my plan to visit my family over New Year's and all of my hometown friends being gone, I have to resign myself to going to bed around 11 PM with the parents or going out with my brother and his creepy friends. It is a hard choice.

― velko, Saturday, 5 December 2009 19:11 (sixteen years ago)
haha yes my incestuous family.
actually the last couple new years have been pretty lame too. two years ago i went on a trip with my boyfriend at the time that we'd planned well in advance, visiting some of his friends, but by the time we left we were in "are we breaking up?" territory. and then last year i was on a bus from boston to nyc and it broke down at a rest stop in connecticut for four or five hours, so we made it to the party in ny around 12:30 (which was at least early enough that everybody hadn't gone home) and i proceeded to make up for lost time and give myself literally the worst hangover of my life.
so maybe bed at 11 isn't such a bad idea.

well i kinda meant that any given weekend during the summer is when some amateur tries to go pro---it doesn't have to be the 4th
otherwise, tho, the other three are def days when ppl who do not otherwise drink suddenly overcorrect and remember what hangovers feel like and go back to bein pretty str8

Even if you just stay in there's no escape; drunk people yowling outside, atrocious TV, bleh.
It's especially bad in Scotland because lots of ppl here take it as a point of national pride to get v drunk and act like fannies.
(Saying that, best one I ever had was staying in with gf until 11.30, then suddenly changing our minds and going on a club and bar crawl and getting hammered fast.)

― the girl from spirea x (f. hazel), Sunday, 6 December 2009 03:57 (sixteen years ago)
Even if it's not yr birthday there's still a whole "now you must summarise your achievements of the year and yr aspirations for the next one" vibe going on which is great for the "wtf r u doin" depressofucks. Plus as noted there seems to be pressure on for everyone to have BEST NIGHT OF YEAR which is doomed to failure.
And unless you live in major city there are no (or v. few) buses on, taxis are like gold dust and charging 4x the normal rate, nobody wants to stay sober and drive other people around (fair enough, nor would I) and walking is too full of aggressive drunks everywhere to feel like much fun, so either the whole thing is a logistical nightmare or you resign yrself to going to that weird kind of shitty place round the corner and being stared at by the locals because it's the only place in walking distance.
The place I went to 2 years ago and actually had an A+++ NYE is not doing it because no staff want to work on NYE, so the only offer we have had so far is a party which I figure there is a good chance my least favourite ex will be at (<-- still in 0% chance of good time in same building as ex territory), but obviously I do not wish to appear bitter enough to have to ask the organisers if he's going
