Space Needle fireworks glitched twice. The best part is the lack anything going on while the dramatic music continues... twice!

It was kinda like a Seahawks game.

the "FUCK YEAH" around the 4-5 minute mark live on TV was awesome.

This YouTube lacks the hosts being caught making out after camera cut, unfortunately.

I'm still a fan somewhere inside, but I don't want to deal with Seattle fans pretending to be upset about the Hawks not making the playoffs or not winning the Bowl this year.

more like hum de hum barely drizzling about to do a little grocery shopping for a few minutes then go outside and WOAH SHIT IT'S RAINING TINY CUBES EVERYWHERE.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 05:02 (seventeen years ago)

Hail, surely.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 05:05 (seventeen years ago)

no, it was freezing rain. It wasn't a thunderhead type thing. These were mostly clear little bits of ice, not big honkin white spheres of pain.

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 05:08 (seventeen years ago)

Tiny cubes? Were you caught in a cubic storm?

The Reverend, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:05 (seventeen years ago)

I had my own interesting storm happening. Driving home this evening, there was a discarded christmas tree right in the middle of the street. I pulled over and dragged it to the sidewalk, wondering how many people had driven around it without doing anything about it.

The Reverend, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:53 (seventeen years ago)

People have been leaving tableaus? art projects? installations? next to our street-level door for the past few weeks. Parts of a futon assembled like a fence with a fir tree and an office chair within. A crown from one of the many Nutcracker statues and a pile of empties. This last Sunday's (another tree/chair combo) was accompanied by a serious dusting of flour. Maybe someone was coming to set one up your way Rev and it fell off the bicycle.

Jaq, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 14:35 (seventeen years ago)

Will post pics of the beautiful Olympic Mtns I took from the rooftop of my work building this morning.
(brrrr oooh ahhh)

Mackro Mackro, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 17:19 (seventeen years ago)

OK, the roof was like an ice-rink, so I couldn't navigate easily, but i was able to snap this. Apparently we got more snow on the ground than the Olympic Peninsula did(?), based on closer inspection. At least it was a clear enough morning, although hazy from the city sublimating.

My dad is old friends with the outgoing rep, Brian Sullivan. He owns a pizza place in Mukilteo that's gone to shit since Brian stopped managing it on a day-to-day basis. The name Liias sounds familiar, I'm thinking I must have gone to school with one of his younger siblings.

Apparently Washington state's Dem caucus, four days after Super Tuesday, might actually matter, since apparently it's impossible to determine a clear winner after Super Tuesday. We have just under a 100 delegates to split. Hat tip to Slog.

it looks like you can see hawks games from your rooftop, unless TSTFKATTBWOTM (the smith tower formerly known as the tallest building west of the mississippi - duh) is blocking all the action.

Cosmo Vitelli, Friday, 25 January 2008 04:29 (seventeen years ago)

It's funny that the Smith tower gets mentioned given that the Columbia Tower (literally just east of my building by a block) is, TODAY, the second tallest building on the West Coast. (Tallest is the Bank Of America tower in downtown L.A. I think.) Thing is, Columbia Tower is the 4th tallest building west of the Mississippi.

So...

...if we're #2 on the West Coast but #4 west of the Mississippi, who's between the West Coast and the Mississippi with the #2 and #3 tallest? Denver? Dallas? Minneapolis? Houston? Las Vegas?

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:26 (seventeen years ago)

perhaps they're measuring from sea level, and #2 and #3 are both sequoias in aspen?

remy bean, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

but probably not

remy bean, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

It turns out #2 and #3 are both in Houston.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/JPMorgan_Chase_Tower_%28Houston%29

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wells_Fargo_Plaza

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:38 (seventeen years ago)

And my bad, it's the U.S. Bank Tower in L.A that's #1. (not Bank Of America)

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:39 (seventeen years ago)

Cosmo, could I see a Seahawks game from my building? Well, kinda...

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/bb/SmithTower_Seattle_WA_USA2.jpg

The wiki page for the Smith Tower entry was photographed from my building (by someone with far less fear of heights than I do), and you can clearly see the field there, but that Crayola Cogs thingy in the middle is blocking most of the view...

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 25 January 2008 05:46 (seventeen years ago)

The Columbia Tower = Bank of America Tower now, amirite?

The Reverend, Friday, 25 January 2008 06:00 (seventeen years ago)

It was! but now it's The Columbia Center again. (I said Tower by accident.)

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 25 January 2008 06:01 (seventeen years ago)

There is a ridiculous ridiculous ridiculously well-stocked record store in Everett. I did not know this.

The Reverend, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 00:53 (seventeen years ago)

The Amazon building has always been my favorite downtown(ish) building...not that I've ever been in it, but it's pretty, isn't it?

The only record stores I have been to in Seattle are the ones on the Ave (always sell to Al's, they will pay you literally double what the other Ave record shops will; Al also bought 20 Lovin' Spoonful LPs from me in one sitting so don't be shy), one in Fremont (good selection and prices but they wouldn't throw in a scratched up LP when I bought a ton so fuck em) and the one below Pike Place (shit & WAY overpriced, and please don't tell me it's because it's "rare" ffs). Can they bring Amoeba up here?

musically, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 01:45 (seventeen years ago)

three weeks pass...

So does anyone have some bar recommendations, preferably in Capitol Hill or downtown? Some friends are going to be in Seattle for a conference and I've never actually gone out drinking there so I have nothing to suggest.

I think there was a Seattle gathering thread recently where such things were discussed but this title was easier to search for.

joygoat, Thursday, 8 May 2008 17:14 (seventeen years ago)

Smith and Havana on Capitol Hill. Smith has food, Havana doesn't.

Jaq, Thursday, 8 May 2008 17:32 (seventeen years ago)

I enjoyed the Comet v much and the Cha Cha seemed cool even if recently invaded by yuppie douches, but ymmv on that one.

Laurel, Thursday, 8 May 2008 17:34 (seventeen years ago)

My taste in bars is probably not as nice as Jaq's, though.

Laurel, Thursday, 8 May 2008 17:35 (seventeen years ago)

I'm thinking places that lack the yuppie douche vibe would be vastly preferred. Lots of good / local beers available would be a huge plus. Cheap never hurts either.

joygoat, Thursday, 8 May 2008 17:42 (seventeen years ago)

Smith and Havana are 2 of the current ILXor FAP hangouts, but I like the Comet (esp post-show) and the Canterbury (though haven't been there recently, heard it's tried to go more upscale?). the higgs and Rrrrickey like the Cha Cha (I think, def. Bimbos which is connected). I stay away from all the Belltown bars, except for 2 Bells, due to yuppie doucheness. My neighborhood, which is downtown but south (nearer the stadiums) has some of Seattle's oldest diviest bars (the Central Tavern, J&M Hotel, Merchant Cafe), but they get packed with frat boys and/or Mariners fans (equally obnoxious).

Jaq, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:05 (seventeen years ago)

frat boys and/or Mariners fans (equally obnoxious)

i promised myself i'd never post to this thread because i hate the title but THAT IS AN UNCALLED-FOR COMPARISON JAQ

sun liquor's my favorite place on capitol hill fwiw. i like Viceroy in belltown mostly for the decor

jergïns, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:12 (seventeen years ago)

oh now don't get all huffy. But you're right, frat boys are as obnoxious as Seahawks fans. Mariners fans are quieter.

Jaq, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:14 (seventeen years ago)

we are sadder because our team sucks.

if it keeps going like this there won't be any mariner fans in your neighborhood come july.

jergïns, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:15 (seventeen years ago)

Actually the worst were the folks who came down from the north for the XTREME MOTOCROSS a few weeks ago. Hundreds of lost not-from-heres in their giant trucks trying to figure out 1st Ave.

Jaq, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:16 (seventeen years ago)

poor Mariners fans, now I feel bad for hating on them :{

Jaq, Thursday, 8 May 2008 18:17 (seventeen years ago)

i totally wanted to go to that motocross. what did you think of that soccer crowd from a few weeks ago? me+56,000 hispanics=superfun crowd

lack the yuppie douche vibe would be vastly preferred. Lots of good / local beers

seems like these are exactly the kinds of places that attract a yuppie/douche crowd though, yeah?

what was the name of that brewery place on like 13th and pike that we went to before the mountain goats that one time? they had a lot of beers (and a lot of bozos, but not as many as other 'brewery-style' places)

Y'all need to bring some Guiliani Time down on that shit. It's like the wild fucking west, I tell ya.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 8 May 2008 19:01 (seventeen years ago)

it is an epic battle to be sure. yuppies on one side, people that pee themselves on the bus on the other, and us, kind moral thoughtful urbane ilxors stuck in the middle. i don't know how it's going to turn out but i am can't wait to find out

sexyDancer where the hell is there a Safeway downtown? Because I would be shopping there every so often. Closest one is on lower Queen Anne.

I stopped at the Capitol Hill one on John.

sexyDancer, Thursday, 8 May 2008 19:19 (seventeen years ago)

ah well, Capitol Hill is another place entirely.

Is anyone else going to the Block Party (we are planning that far in advance, I guess)?

rev, Thursday, 8 May 2008 19:37 (seventeen years ago)

I used to work in Detroit, so that functions as my barometer for insane alcoholic and crackhead visibility . On that scale, Seattle (and pretty much every other city I've ever been in) fails to even come close.

But yeah, I concede that good beers and yuppie douche might kind of go together. How about yuppie douches who ended up that way sort of on accident, or at least are kind of embarrassed about being that way as opposed to the social-climbing conspicious consumption types? That I can deal with and kind of relate to.

The "moral thoughtful urbane" thing, maybe.

ha, forgot about Mackro posting the Mark0 L11as article above. I'm doing a feature on his Republican challenger, an 18-y/o Paulbot (whose name I'd rather not have appear here) who goes to my college, for the school paper. Should be intersting.

rev, Thursday, 8 May 2008 23:44 (seventeen years ago)

For a second, I thought that would be what you'd call someone from Poulsbo.

I think someone else should start the new Seattle ILE thread because right now, my working draft is

I've never been to Sun Liquor even though it's only a block away from my apt. It looks kind of fussy. I'm wrong?

Joygoat, any of the places mentioned above are good but after Wednesday the YD crowd can take any of them over (or at least it feels that way.) Except for the Canterbury. I think it remains safely divey enough to be fine even on Saturday.

the higgs, Friday, 9 May 2008 01:08 (seventeen years ago)

I've never seen the Canterbury be douchey. Yet.

Morley Timmons, Friday, 9 May 2008 01:12 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah this actually kindof sounds like me! Except that um...my work doesn't have a dress code and I wear band t-shirts there.

I'll vouch for Viceroy. I've only been there a few times but I really like that place. And I love the way the bar has this comfy cushion all underneath that pampers your knees.

Bimble, Friday, 9 May 2008 02:01 (seventeen years ago)

And yeah, anyone who lives in the Pioneer Square/1st Ave vicinity has my sympathies. I worked there long enough to know that living there would drive me insane. I think it's wrong to call the automatic toilets "needle exchanges" though. I think they were a good idea but the problem is I read they don't actually work well mechanically.

is there a good weekend this summer to visit seattle
my sister is living out there and i might hit it up. last time i missed a roy ayers concert by 2 days ;_;

deej, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Is there still a bar called Kincoras on Cap Hill? Because I don't know how long YDs would survive in there, if that's your primary concern. I remember it being pretty much a pit.

Laurel, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

ALL the bars in that strip on Pine are closed to make way for condos (Cha Cha/Bimbo's, Bus Stop, Man Ray, Kincora). Cha Cha & Bimbo's moved to new digs up on Pike just W of the Wildrose, but that neighborhood is such a clusterfuck now that I mostly steer clear.

contenderizer, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:53 (seventeen years ago)

Oh fuck, is that what happened to the Pony, too? I recall that it was closing soon/having some kind of blow-out demolition party.

Laurel, Thursday, 22 May 2008 21:59 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, I only went to the Pony a couple times, but it ruled. Ursula A. tended bar. I think they set it up knowing they'd have less than a year before the whole block got condemned. Black Lips played there!

contenderizer, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:03 (seventeen years ago)

The only night I was taken out on the town in Seattle, so to speak, we went to Kincoras, the Pony, Cha Cha, and the Comet. It was like a dive tour. I can't believe I didn't feel worse the next day.

Laurel, Thursday, 22 May 2008 22:07 (seventeen years ago)

Auburn is really not Seattle, Ned. It's fine if you like the 'burbs and tribal casinos and the Supermall though.

Eating in Seattle = wise.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:00 (seventeen years ago)

i'm so damn hungry!

Ai Lien, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:01 (seventeen years ago)

If you're a foodie, you're probably going to live at Pike Place Market for a while. Beecher's handmade cheese + produce stands + fresh seafood + the Crepe place + Delaurenti's + Steelhed Brewery or Pike Brewery = some of the best food in one concentration place in the U.S.

And that's not even mentioning Tamarind Tree... or Veraci Pizza at the Fremont or Ballard Sunday Markets (Best pizza I've had, west of the Mississippi).

I've mentioned this before, but an underrated thing to do that's well worth your $7 or so is to do a round-trip ferry ride to Bremerton and back. There's not much to see in downtown Bremerton itself, but you can choose to hop off and walk around there for 90 minutes, or wait the 15 minutes to go straight back to Seattle. Best to do this around dawn, especially if it's a full moon night.

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:26 (seventeen years ago)

Actually, I'm heading to Beecher's for lunch today. THX THREAD.

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

Everyone should visit Bremerton. It's a place of pilgrimage. Modesty forbids further details.

Ned Raggett, Friday, 23 May 2008 16:28 (seventeen years ago)

I had a work-related "retreat" in Bremerton once. I'm almost certain that's where it was. Our boss took us out to her parents' house right by the water. It was really nice. Well except that we all drank the night before and had to sit there hungover for a day-long "training"...ugh.

I am in Seattle, Bimble. I thought you was UK?

Oh that's a common mistake - people think that cause I've been an anglophile for so long. I'm really a Seattle-ite. Maybe we can meet up sometime!

I'm in Hollywood on vacation right now though and wouldn't you know it? The weather is just as overcast as Seattle today. *shakes head* I just can't win! Haha. Also it's been really windy here, too...I got something in my eye just walking down the street. Not fun.

Bimble, Friday, 23 May 2008 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

i'm glad that i can wear a sweater in the evening!

Ai Lien, Friday, 23 May 2008 18:42 (seventeen years ago)

The Reverend, Friday, 23 May 2008 22:09 (seventeen years ago)

So does anybody know anything about Auburn, particularly if there's anywhere worthwhile to eat there?

I'm going to see Radiohead next Wednesday at the White River Amphitheater which appears to be out in the middle of nowhere. I've been to Sea-Tac and the Ikea in Renton but that's pretty much it when it comes to the southern suburbs.

joygoat, Friday, 15 August 2008 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

There's a big shopping wall miles west of the tiny road to the Amphitheatre.

I wanted to see the show but declined because of the horror stories I heard about the White River Amphitheatre: the traffic, the acoustic, etc.

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 15 August 2008 17:21 (sixteen years ago)

shopping mall, but maybe wall is more apropos.

I don't think anybody has anything good to say about Auburn unless they own a house there.

Mackro Mackro, Friday, 15 August 2008 17:22 (sixteen years ago)

my family stayed in a little house in Ballard right on the water by the locks, and there was a little restaurant near there (pretty sure it had "lock" in the name -- maybe "The Lock Spot"?) that I remember having pretty good clam chowder. it was pretty cold and rainy the day we went there, though, so any soup probably would've tasted good. also, our waiter was overly friendly and gave everybody nicknames. my mom was "slowpoke" because she couldn't decide what she wanted to order. I think my little sister was "sport". despite this, the meal was still enjoyable.

As a hopeful close to this thread, looks like David Schmader is going to be riffing on bad movies throughout December -- as he did on the Showgirls DVD. Here's the full link.

http://slog.thestranger.com/slog/archives/2008/12/03/starting_next_monday_night_at

It happens at the Central Cinema, and here's the movie schedule

MON DEC 8: Battlefield Earth
MON DEC 15: Leonard Part 6
MON DEC 22: Can't Stop the Music
MON DEC 29: Road House
MON JAN 5: Rhinestone
MON JAN 12: Gigli

You can probably count me in for Can't Stop The Music on 12/22

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Wednesday, 3 December 2008 23:53 (sixteen years ago)

Schmader's commentaries are fun; I hope to catch at least one of these (maybe Road House, though Leonard Part 6 would also be great).

Seattle folks, we are planning a holiday open house at our new flat, either for the 20th or the 27th. Cast your votes now, and hope to see you all there.

the 20th!

Also re: Schmader. Food and booze will apparently be provided to your seat. Tickets look to be $8 each, via Brown Paper.

Gino-Vanellyville (Mackro Mackro), Thursday, 4 December 2008 00:07 (sixteen years ago)

There's a series pass for all 6 for $30! That might be too much badness all together.

Jaq, Thursday, 4 December 2008 00:10 (sixteen years ago)

hey open house! that will be fun. whatever day works for others, it'll work for me, though i might get there late.

jergins, Thursday, 4 December 2008 00:11 (sixteen years ago)

I'll try not to put a time limit on this one :)

Jaq, Thursday, 4 December 2008 00:13 (sixteen years ago)

the higgs, Thursday, 4 December 2008 06:33 (sixteen years ago)

I never know what I am doing that far in advance, so I'll just try to make it, whichever date you call.

if the new four seasons and SAM can coexist next to a strip club the safeco field can stfu

miss precious perfect (musically), Friday, 5 December 2008 02:32 (sixteen years ago)

I love the fact that there's a strip club accross the street from SAM.

Ringtone Tycoon (The Reverend), Friday, 5 December 2008 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

erm...just for the juxtopositional value, of course

Ringtone Tycoon (The Reverend), Friday, 5 December 2008 03:47 (sixteen years ago)

Not bragging, but I had a friend who danced there. I never went in, but used to get a rise out of her by threatening to.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 5 December 2008 04:32 (sixteen years ago)

"get a rise"

freudfriend (jergins) (jergins), Friday, 5 December 2008 04:37 (sixteen years ago)

my ex used to dance at one in san diego
this was long after i went out with her though. i was still friends with her brother, who threatened to go watch her dance. wtf dude

freudfriend (jergins) (jergins), Friday, 5 December 2008 04:38 (sixteen years ago)

whenever we had fields trips to SAM, while we were waiting to get on and off the bus we would heckle everyone walking into the lusty lady. nothing's better a bunch of 5th graders yelling at you while you're walking into a strip club.

miss precious perfect (musically), Friday, 5 December 2008 04:41 (sixteen years ago)

my mom still lols about the time the hammering man fell down and the lusty lady sign said 'LET US ERECT THE HAMMERING MAN'

Father Yod, the middle guy, died in an accident in 1975 icydk, so needless to say, he won't be touring with the band.
