Still my favourite weekend of the footballing year, although sadly we won't get to see Man Utd's reserves grind out a 0-0 draw against non-league opposition this year.

Anyway, I'm going to go out on a limb and predict that one of the Big Four will not win it this year. Tenner on Man City, perhaps?

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:20 (seventeen years ago) link

can't muster up much interest in the competition, to be honest. at least blackburn have won the league in the past twelve years.

Here's Chasetown FC:

I thought all Man Utd ever did in the third round was beat Aston Villa.

"We are not going to win the FA Cup and I do not care less about it", sez Dave Kitson

A third round tie between two teams who are actively trying not to win it. I can't wait.

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Perhaps Spurs and Reading both got confused and thought the FA Cup game was last week?

Matt DC, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:32 (seventeen years ago) link

"My biggest motivation is to say, "This guy cost £10m and he's won God knows what. Well, I'm Dave Kitson, I cost £150,000 from Cambridge and I ran the show today'."

I lifted the FA Cup at Wembley the other day. It's very light and the lid is held on by masking tape.

Pete W, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:33 (seventeen years ago) link

Steve Coppell's glum dismissal of the UEFA cup as a worthwhile enterprise was one of my favourite interviews of last season.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:40 (seventeen years ago) link

i'd love to think that it's all a calculated act and coppell turns into this raging psychopath in the dressing room. he has terrified and tormented kitson into the above quotes.

darraghmac, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:44 (seventeen years ago) link

and i thought kitson was already officially ILX approved since we found out his aptitude for scrabble.

Dom, how did you verify Kitson's identity?

That mong guy that's shit, Thursday, 3 January 2008 11:46 (seventeen years ago) link

There was no way of verifying it, but who the fuck is going to pretend to be Dave Kitson on an online Scrabble server?

See, I was watching this in a pub in Highbury with a Villa-supporting mate, and we really enjoyed the first half and wondered what they were going on about at half-time. darraghmac, Monday, 7 January 2008 12:44 (seventeen years ago) link

Of the two goals he's scored this season, one was a 40-yard waltz through our defence, in which big centre-half Paddy McCarthy was nutmegged and left trailing as this paragon of athleticism barnstormed through to finish with his customary aplomb. It was the winner.

Just got offed, Monday, 7 January 2008 12:45 (seventeen years ago) link

i don't wanna kill him, i haven't enough salt to keep him til winter.

ok, look, paul robinson is underpreforming and should be sold or dropped, but he's probably a nice enough fella and i wish him no harm personally. will that do as a last word on the subject?

now, on to villa- will mellberg and laursen both go, and if so are ye royally screwed for another two years?

darraghmac, Monday, 7 January 2008 12:53 (seventeen years ago) link

Ooh I know this one!! Mellberg will probably stay till the summer, when he will be replaced EXCITINGLY by an ACTUAL EXCITING ATTACKING FULL-BACK with PROPER ATTACKING ABILITY like JOSE BOSINGWA or MIGUEL or JUSTIN HOYTE

Laursen will probably sign a deal, I think. If they did leave Villa would be ballsed, in Mellberg's case only because it would mean playing lovable large-foreheaded psychopath Craig Gardner at right back, where he would routinely be dismissed for two bookable offences within 14 minutes.

Here's to the festival of flowing football that Man U-Arsenal will definitely be, then.

Our tie just stinks of upset, doesn't it? Especially away... dammit, I really would like us to the Championship side that makes a totally unmerited run to the semis this year. But that'll probably be Wolves or someone.

Portsmouth will get by Preston easy enough, so Sheff Utd should see off Boro. Expect to see the Chelsea game as Sunday's lunchtime kick-off, just in case the Northeners start getting ideas.

I almost made Pam crash the car on a roundabout off the A22 when I heard the Barnsley result (we'd spent all day at a farm)...OH MY GOD! They'll beat Inter now, won't they?

(Barnsley, I mean - UEFA, 2011-12.)

Michael Jones, Saturday, 16 February 2008 18:53 (sixteen years ago) link

Rafa has to go at the end of the season, please, just end it. (even tho I actually think they will beat Inter on Wednesday.)

I watched this with my Dad in the pub and he was sort of joking each time Barnsley went forward "oh they'll score now", and I had to tell him that actually the game was the exact same as Villa/Wigan etc etc etc and I was fairly sure Barnsley would score.

The second was less expected but still, no bottle in the team anymore. Total slump, they're never going to "bounce back" from never having been good enough to win a title in the first place.

The whole furore with the Americans has allowed people to stop paying attention to Rafa.

That was a great game. I thought United looked really good (much more fluid than the tedious victory against Lyon on Tuesday) and they could easily have scored four or five by the time Portsmouth got that penalty. Still, that makes the cup a lot more interesting now. If Barnsley can beat Chelsea as well then this will be the best cup I can remember (but I expect Chelsea to win 3-0 to be honest).

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:34 (sixteen years ago) link

it all seems so set up for Chelsea to win it now, hopefully that'll instil a sense of complacency in them.

blueski, Saturday, 8 March 2008 15:36 (sixteen years ago) link

looks like portsmouth were lucky with the penalty really - utd keeper seemed to unintentionally bring baros down with his head altho there's an obstruction issue.

blueski, Saturday, 8 March 2008 16:46 (sixteen years ago) link

United were ridiculously unlucky in many ways (Ronaldo should have been given a penalty after about 5 mins, ball cleared off the line repeatedly, hit the post, had about 20 shots to Portsmouth's 3, ended up with Ferdinand in goal to face the penalty), but I thought it was a penalty and I wasn't surprised to see Kuszczak sent off (although the commentators said it was harsh). Actually, I was surprised to see *him* sent off because I hadn't noticed that Van der Sar wasn't still in goal.

last time a big 4 club didn't make the final (tho chelsea weren't considered one in the 90s): 1991 (sorry spurs fans)

blueski, Sunday, 9 March 2008 16:48 (sixteen years ago) link

I doubt it re. Wembley sellout - all clubs have a bunch of gloryhunters that'll turn out in droves, leading to terrible Football Focus build-ups on the romance of the cup, local bakers making cakes in club colours, shops putting cardboard cutouts of the Cup covered in tinfoil in their windows etc etc. Makes you long for the return of Saint & Greavesie, jumpers for goalposts, etc. (this is what it was like when Gretna got to the Scottish Cup Final a couple of years ago, and I can't see the progress to the semi-finals of Plucky Wee Queen Of The South being any different)

ailsa, Sunday, 9 March 2008 17:09 (sixteen years ago) link

hmmm, can't help thinking that things would be the poorer for the lack of that. let the people have their fun. what would you prefer in place of all that?

Grandpont Genie, Sunday, 9 March 2008 17:18 (sixteen years ago) link

Hang on, I wasn't criticising it - these are GOOD THINGS (but it would be nice if these people could be arsed with their clubs the rest of the time as well)

I was doubting whether it would be difficult to sell Wembley out, btw, not doubting that it would be a sellout.

ailsa, Sunday, 9 March 2008 17:24 (sixteen years ago) link

sorry, I read the "terrible" and thought it applied to the whole lot, not just FF.

Grandpont Genie, Sunday, 9 March 2008 17:41 (sixteen years ago) link

terrible FF bits are reminiscent of everything I can recall about Saint and Greavesie, i.e. poking fun at the provincials and their unfounded faith in their rubbish football teams.

ailsa, Sunday, 9 March 2008 17:47 (sixteen years ago) link

Apparently it's the first time there's only been one top flight team in the semis for more than a hundred years.

Re: selling out Wembley - I'd be amazed if they didn't sell all the tickets. I think the play-offs for league 1 & 2 get pretty big crowds (but probably don't sell out?) and when you consider that about half the tickets for the FA Cup final don't even go to the clubs it shouldn't be that difficult to shift their allocations. The only problems might be with the semis being at Wembley as well and if the FA charge stupid prices: someone from Barnsley/Bristol/Cardiff who's hardly ever watched a game of football might be prepared to travel to London and fork out £80 for a ticket for that 'once in a lifetime' experience, but maybe not for that 'second time in a month' experience.

Bollocks. That's that for 90mins of wearing my Bristolian heritage on my sleeve. Suppose I'll have to wait for Bristol City being smashed 4-0 by every team in the Premiership next season.

That was the only live game I watched all weekend. Keepin' it real.

Millwall were in the UEFA Cup not so long ago.

Is it just me, or was Boro v Cardiff the shortest ever set of highlights for a top billing MOTD game? Can I assume nothing at all of interest happened other than the goals?

Still, roffle roffle roffle at Adrian Chiles - "and if you want to see if there'll be a repeat of that 1912 thriller between West Brom and Barnsley tune in for the draw tomorrow".

Matt DC, Sunday, 9 March 2008 23:36 (sixteen years ago) link

Can Cardiff qualify for Europe through the FA cup? I seem to remember UEFA saying that teams have to qualify through their own FA, rather than in the FA that they actaually play. This was in relation to Celtic/Rangers playing in the Premiership (ie you can play in the premiership, but you won't be able to qualify for Europe through it) but would the same not apply to Cardiff?

The Wayward Johnny B, Monday, 10 March 2008 08:57 (sixteen years ago) link

Ooh, good point - I remember the thread where we were talking about Celtic and Rangers and I think it was pointed out that Cardiff wouldn't be able to play in Europe under current UEFA rules. Hmmm.

Pete W, Monday, 10 March 2008 10:02 (sixteen years ago) link

Interesting, though, that all this has happened in one season - has seeing other teams actually take on and beat the 'big clubs' spread confidence and inspiration around the league? Or is it all one big fluke?

Pete W, Monday, 10 March 2008 10:05 (sixteen years ago) link

Found an article claiming that it's the FA's interpretation of UEFA's rules, not UEFA's rules, that are stopping Cardiff getting through(hence how Monaco can represent France in European competition). I guess they'll just have to not win the cup then to stop this becoming an issue.

Was this based on the PK? I thought that kick was pretty much unsaveable by any keeper (unless they started out standing at the left goalpost.

Great finals I have seen: 1981 (replay), 1983 (1st match for the neutrals, replay for me), 1987, 1989 (maybe not great, but some late drama), 1990 (not the replay!).....2006 (even if it wasn't the result I wanted). There's been a definite shortage of them in the last 17 years.

The 1990 replay was awful as well, although Palace's kick-a-manc tactics were quite amusing.

Pete W, Monday, 19 May 2008 11:46 (sixteen years ago) link

Finals I have missed: 1991 (working in a shop and nipping next door to Argos every 20 minutes to look at the TVs to see the score), 1992 (just couldn't face watching Liverpool's inevitable victory over a second division team just after United's awful collapse had handed the league to Leeds), 2001 (in Italy). I don't remember anything at all about 1998, but I think I watched it.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Monday, 19 May 2008 11:50 (sixteen years ago) link

Pete W, Monday, 19 May 2008 12:04 (sixteen years ago) link

I'd consider that necessary, but not sufficient.

Nasty, Brutish & Short, Monday, 19 May 2008 14:23 (sixteen years ago) link

The 1990 replay was awful as well, although Palace's kick-a-manc tactics were quite amusing

The strange thing about that was that there wasn't really any reason for Coppell to tell Palace to resort to such tactics. It wasn't like 1983, when United were obviously better than relegated Brighton and when Brighton missed their chance to win it in the first match people were pretty sure they'd lose the replay. Palace and Man Utd were very evenly matched: both had spent the whole season trying to avoid relegation and finished level on 48 points just above the drop zone. Palace had some good players, and actually finished 3rd the following season (well ahead of United), while United still featured people like Mal Donaghy, Mike Phelan, Colin Gibson, Clayton Blackmore, Russell Beardsmore and Lee Martin (of course). So it wasn't a mismatch by any stretch, and Palace nearly won the first match, so why they decided to try to kick United out of the match in the replay is a mystery.
