J0rdan S., Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:34 (seventeen years ago)

a bit of context to my one: guy in the middle is more or less my best friend, guy on the right I hardly see ever. it was taken at a birthday party for two mutual friends on the HMS Wellington, a boat-turned-party-venue moored somewhere along the Thames. as i said on my facebook photos page, i look like a jester whose joke-sheet has just blown out the window.

roxy and jordan had it far better off when in the grips of adolescence, for they are cutesy and wholesome, as opposed to some of us who couldn't shake off grease/spots/paunches/bad specs for love nor money.

Just got offed, Sunday, 6 January 2008 21:35 (seventeen years ago)

i probably have a bunch of good pics on my other computer i will have to look

I'm sitting in some class somewhere during my senior year of high school, reading something (as I always read novels in class because I was bored with most of the classes), the high school photographer asks me to look up, I realize what's going on and I flick my bookmark into the shot and:

Ned, you look like a model in that picture. Also, didn't teachers yell at you for having your nose buried in some novel during their classes?

dell, Monday, 7 January 2008 21:36 (seventeen years ago)

Ned looks way more clean cut than I think he should have.

Sara R-C, Monday, 7 January 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

Also, didn't teachers yell at you for having your nose buried in some novel during their classes?

In a word, no. This is because I was mostly acing the classes without even trying. My parents told me later that apparently at least one of my history instructors -- who noted that I was usually just reading books where I was sitting in class (in the front row, at that) -- kept trying to trip me up by asking questions about the current subjects. Allegedly I would look up, give the answer and then go back to my reading. I honestly don't remember that at all -- just that I read a lot!

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 January 2008 21:38 (seventeen years ago)

I think if Roxy and I went to the same high school, I would've had a crush on her, for sure.

ENBB, Monday, 7 January 2008 21:45 (seventeen years ago)

Haha the photog was like "LOOK STARRY EYED, PRETEND THE BOY YOU LIKE IS RIGHT BEHIND ME" and I distinctly recall being annoyed. That's the look that resulted.

Is there a thread for all the Hilarious things that the school photographers would say to coax smiles?

dell, Monday, 7 January 2008 21:46 (seventeen years ago)

Sheesh, sounds like you had cool teachers.

Generally yeah! (One of them let me work on an independent study project during 10th grade English class for half the year -- on Tolkien, unsurpisingly -- while another did similar by saying, "I think you might like this book" and assigning it to me as a similar independent study project in 11th grade. Book in question: Gravity's Rainbow.)

Ned Raggett, Monday, 7 January 2008 21:47 (seventeen years ago)

I think that makes you the most desirable woman alive, bell_labs. xxxp

jessie monster, Monday, 7 January 2008 21:56 (seventeen years ago)

oh i am just going to give it away: i was at an anime club. wow embarrassing.

some kids tried to hook me into magic the gathering, but as a kid who NEVER had money, i just got their cast off cards, i think i only ever paid $2 total for my cards, and was whupped over and over until i quit one day and never looked back.

however i definitely played D&D! for WAAAAAYYYY too long (read: until i moved to montreal abt 2 years ago). but that is NOT embarrasssing becuase it was basically a bunch of great dudes hanging out and occasionally playing games but mostly making funny jokes.

MANY XXXXXXPOSTS it was not quiz bowl, they didn't havei t in Canada, BUT we had Reach For The Top which is the same tihng, i think, and I was on that team!!!!!

Will M., Monday, 7 January 2008 21:57 (seventeen years ago)

Quiz Bowl is like "Jeopardy" except in a five-on-five match-up.

My step-father (who is a math teacher) complains that it doesn't get the press coverage that football gets.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:01 (seventeen years ago)

Bell labs, on the other hand, at least gets to be a knock-out adult, which is what everyone who matters will remember, anyway.

The girl on the left in that photo was famously loopy, although I'm not sure how much the reputation was deserved. She was allegedly caught fingering herself in French (for real) and had a coffin in her bedroom.

The girl on the right was was proud that her dad was a Tory counciller.

haw! no idea. I think he left at 16. He was very short and was bullied terribly. I had no classes with him until GCSE art. I still remember the sound of a lump of modelling clay the size of a softball hitting him in the head. Those lessons were out of control.

Our school was pretty much 1/3 non-white British until 16+, and you can see what happened there from the year group photo.

caek: I was at state primary until the end of year 5, at which point my parents thought they'd give me a crack "at the highest academic level", and sent me to westminster under school for three years, where, i am happy to inform, i still finished top of the exams, as well as the punishment lists. god i was a gormless twat then (think i'm bad now? then HA)

also my bro, who attends Westminster as well (as a fees-paid academic scholar, but still), got a D at GCSE art proper :p

Just got offed, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:37 (seventeen years ago)

in fact we were both given the ultimatum: "get a scholarship or we can't afford for you to go". both of us succeeded, and although the school was good for me in that i'd have been SLAUGHTERED at most other places (for being such an extrovert outsider goon), i can't help wondering whether my actual life wouldn't have been improved had i failed to get the grades.

caek, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)

ha, folks like you would have driven me to depression :D

westminster wasn't that bad tbh. towards the end i began to fit in and what was previously fond mockery became genuine fondness. it helped that i kinda blanked out how socially-connected and wealthy the vast majority of pupils were. definitely suited me more than my brother.

Just got offed, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:44 (seventeen years ago)

Mookie, the pic of you looking pug-nosed and sulky in jr high is endlessly amusing.

Laurel, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:46 (seventeen years ago)

My even-younger brother is at a comprehensive and although he's an immature pillock his street sass puts mine to shame. Apparently when someone tried to mug him of his phone he merely asked if that guy was a dealer and could he have HIS phone number. This confused the would-be robber enough to prevent the attack (he even gave my brother his number!). Kids eh?

I need to find some decent HS photos. My friend L has all our yearbooks in London and we looked a few weeks ago. I had forgotten:

*Yearbook article about me being offered a book deal, HORRIFIC photo NOT publishing.
*Yearbook article about stylish people on campus complete with L's friend, some baby punk, writing some hissyfit about WHY DID THEY PICK HER WAHH WAHHH WAHH SHE TOLD ME I WAS A POSEUR WHEN I WORE MY DK'S T-SHIRT next to massive photo of me in a sweater I didn't like.
*Photo of me and friends in school newspaper office. Band t-shirts: JAMC, Smiths, Cure LOL 1985.

yeah, that's why i thought i would mention that she is my mother. it's an unfortunate outfit. this was the period when she was ordering from a lot of catalogs and felt compelled to wear something once she bought it. she is/was more attractive than that cantaloupe suit suggests, i assure you.

this was the look i had when people started calling me data, like from TNG.

figgy pudding (La Lechera), Monday, 28 December 2009 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

lol, okay, i was hoping you would take that in good humor, because it wasn't meant to offend. my mother had some terrible outfits from that time period, too.

also, i like yr look. data was awesome.

it's really more a class thing cuz the japanese kids get it too.

oh i wasn't even talking about hawaii! i was just referring to that times article max linked to in another thread.

horseshoe, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)

oh whoops! i get asked about this by a surprisingly large number of (white) people, and it's weird because haole-resentment is a thing, just like you'd expect it to be in an imperial colony with a mostly-native underclass, but it's not really a serious thing and a lot of people on the west coast ask me about it in hushed commiserating tones like they think people are being lynched and it always weirds me out/makes me uncomfortable and then i feel guilty for making whatever jokes i made about it.

(your post would not have been one of these even if it had been real though)

difficult listening hour, Wednesday, 25 May 2011 20:47 (fourteen years ago)

I live in Des Moines, a good friend from high school followed his wife to college at Central, and they worked/lived at a motel there for a while.

There are some weirdo conservative things they ran into, like people scolding you for mowing your lawn on Sunday or post-dating checks written on Sunday so it would look like they weren't shopping on Jesus day.

A really nice coworker of mine is from Pella. He unironically has a Creation Museum shirt and coffee mug that I choose to ignore.

But I love dutch letters! Tulips are pretty cool.

i don't know, looking that much like your mom at 14 is kind of awful. i mean, i had big indie-rock glasses and listened to crust-punk, which is equally embarassing, but in a completely different way.

i must say, tho, it is kind of cute. and everyone in that pic has a winning smile.

Yeah it's just the same hair same glasses etc. that freaks me out. I was a really young 14 year old though and didn't really start doing my own thing for like another year after this. I just didn't realize quite how much of a clone I was until I found this a couple weeks ago.

i think given her druthers my mom would have dressed me just like her, too. she would always suggest i buy stuff she would wear when we went shopping. i don't think it was sinister, just a lack of imagination.

horseshoe, Thursday, 30 June 2011 00:50 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah see I think her mini-me from from birth to 15 sort of made me go off the deep end which is how I wound up with purple hair and dressed in head to toe thrifted polyester stuff a year later. Also NAVGL but in a diff way entirely.

Also why were those glasses so big?! I blam Sally Jesse.

well i dunno if she made him dress like her but i though it was common knowldge/possible urban legend that hemingways mom used to dress him in girls clothes till he was 10! it is one of those things you say and nod knowingly as if it explains a lot about hemingway. which, well, it maybe does.

IIRC back in the 19th century, probably in the early 20th century too, it was pretty common to dress both little girls and little boys in frilly clothes that may look "girlish" to someone living today. The idea that boys should dress "masculine" and totally different from girls right from the start wasn't around yet. So I don't know if Hemingway's and his sister's clothes were that different from the standards of the era.

mh, Thursday, 12 April 2012 14:53 (thirteen years ago)

i used to feel that way about ratty old cardigans/v-neck sweaters, but now i realize that they are part of my uniform and therefore indispensible.

two overweight dachshunds with three eyes (La Lechera), Thursday, 12 April 2012 14:59 (thirteen years ago)

Me too about plaid and flannel. Got kind of old in the nineties. Cardigans I keep around because my grandmother hand made most of them. I still have my grandfather's cardigan from the fifties - it is real wool and forest green!

Here is me checking out colleges during my senior year. Wearing some fruity new wave dance outfit (dad's shirt over flowered dress and capri pants).

-repeat twice a week

school trips seemed to be my steez tho, that's how I met my bf in my final year of hs. also a year younger than me. also similarly complexioned to the other crush, and was kind of good friends with him except I didn't find that out til later. lol. so we got all bff-y and I crushed super hard, and THEN, I found out when we got back from the trip that he was kind of seeing a friend of mine. I had no idea about that at all until we all got drunk at a party, and ended up sitting in her driveway, her, him, and me basically roundtabling who he should go out with. O_o

we were together for maybe 6 months but then I got accepted to uni and was moving out of home and 2 hours away, and he wanted to call it quits so I could sow my wild oats. which never got sown except when I was drunk so it was kind of a pointless exercise.

he was cool tho. probly the first guy i ever felt like i loved? he told me in a teary drunk phone conversation the night before I moved to the us permanently that I was the only girl he had ever loved. which is maybe cliche to say out loud but felt v true at the time. we stayed friends, and still keep in touch in a very vague happy birthday once a year way. oddly enough he ended up marrying a girl with the same name as me

three years pass...

I just remembered doing a high school play which ended in this long convoluted scene which featured a lot of minor actors who weren't part of the main rehearsals. One of them screws up and says a line that's like 3 pages down in the script, then the other actors follow suit, essentially skipping like five minutes of the play. The problem is my character is supposed to be off stage at this point, I think he winds up getting poisoned or something (this was a black comedy), but I'm just standing there in the center, not knowing what to do. So after a minute there's a pause in the dialogue and I yell out "Aaah! I'm having a heart attack!!", stumble backwards and fall as far back towards the scenery as I can, so I can be out of everyone's way. This of course greatly confuses both the audience and everyone on stage, and as a result they botch the dialogue yet again, and the play sort of abruptly ends a couple minutes later. Man do I wish someone had filmed that. Funny enough everyone "blamed" me (blame in quotes because almost everyone thought it was hilarious) even though it was really some bit actor, not that I wanted to throw him under the bus. Anyway, there's my cool high school story no one asked for.
