What's the worst subculture?

This sort of overlaps with the geek poll, but what do you think is the most irritating subculture of them all? (I'm gonna leave racist skinheads and Neo-Nazis out of the poll, because otherwise they'd dominate it.) Note that I'm only including self-defined subcultures here, so there's no groups like "chavs" on the list.

What?

Tom D., Monday, 7 January 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

Oh right, I get you

Tom D., Monday, 7 January 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

I thought "chav" was a derogatory term made up by people who don't think they belong to that group?

(x-post)

Tuomas, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:13 (seventeen years ago)

Went for BDSM, assuming we're talking "scene" dudes with tapered Ming the Merciless goattees, rather than Daisy Lowe softcore porn.

Dom Passantino, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

Animal rights activists. Bunch of cunts. I love animals as much as the next person, but digging up and hiding corpses isn't going to win anybody over.

nate woolls, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:14 (seventeen years ago)

Anyway, I don't want to say there's anything inherently wrong with any of these subcultures, I thought a poll would just raise some interesting discussion, like with the geek poll.

Tuomas, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:15 (seventeen years ago)

digging up and hiding corpses isn't going to win anybody over.

Hold on, what does this refer to?

Tuomas, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:16 (seventeen years ago)

... not Goths, surprisingly

Tom D., Monday, 7 January 2008 14:17 (seventeen years ago)

you left off SLACKERS -- the so-called gen exers totally got on my nerves in the 90s

I'm gonna leave racist skinheads and Neo-Nazis out of the poll, because otherwise they'd dominate it.

surely BDSM would give them a run for their money?

blueski, Monday, 7 January 2008 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

at the risk of sounding jaded I have to say being a biker isn't what it used to be, now it's more of a fashion statement or an expensive hobby. when I was a kid the local motorcycle gang was pretty fucking scary.

Fun loving motorbike enthusiasts

Tom D., Monday, 7 January 2008 14:27 (seventeen years ago)

Indie kids have been around since the 80s... if not the 70s!

yeah those 80s 'alternative rockers' were lame too. now in the 70s, when I would have qualified as a member, the "indie kid" subculture was simply known as people w/excellent taste in music ;-)

Animal rights activists / vegans

these two things don't always go hand in hand.
the vegans i love to hate are not the ones that actually care about animals!

bell_labs, Monday, 7 January 2008 17:02 (seventeen years ago)

no emos? went for vegan/animal rights activists, if you're going to be an 'activist' then there's enough causes out there without begrudging me my dinner.

this is brutally difficult. they're all such valid choices. i went with nudists not because of their nudity but because of their fucking superiority over people who, uhh, like to be warmer than them, and their weird fucking naked = zen shit. they're worse than surfers (where are surfers on this thread btw?)

Will M., Monday, 7 January 2008 18:25 (seventeen years ago)

XXX Straight Edge XXX people all universally suck, but I didn't see them on the list until after I voted for vegans, so oh well.

"Computer nerds / gamers"

HI DERE, Monday, 7 January 2008 19:06 (seventeen years ago)

I voted for animal rights activists, on the basis that they're the only people on the list who (a) are nastily threatening to other people (b) at least in theory, want to kill large numbers of people.

Nudists are annoying (even though Zen Nudism isn't something you get in Britain; the British Naturist community is a mixture of leathery-skinned "I've been doing it for years and look how healthy I am" skin cancer statistics-in-waiting; and libertarian "I have the RIGHT to be naked whenever I want and NOONE can stop me! FREEEEDOM!" lunatic types.) Furries are creepy. But neither of them want to threaten or kill people.

Forest Pines Mk2, Monday, 7 January 2008 19:12 (seventeen years ago)

(oh, and the middle-aged leather-waistcoated sector of the BDSM crowd are just sad. They think they're special and "out there" because they go to private clubs and do something they think is mildly subversive; when really they're as conformist as any of the groups listed above)

Forest Pines Mk2, Monday, 7 January 2008 19:14 (seventeen years ago)

that explains pretty much every midlife crisis ever

Will M., Monday, 7 January 2008 19:27 (seventeen years ago)

Does this post display a complete lack of self-awareness or an overwhelming abundance thereof?

They're the two I've been exposed to most at uni! :D

I was never a LARPer but I was in a stupid water-gun assassins game, in which absolutely everyone else WAS a LARPer. This led to guilt, then shame, then me leaving the game for good.

As for indie kids, well, they're EVERYWHERE. More importantly, they regard themselves as musical authorities, which often puts them in contact with myself. Worse, I like a lot of music that could be classed as 'indie'. Thus, when I hear or see their ridiculous scenester posturing (which invariably has nothing to do with my criterion, how wickedly brilliant the music is), I am afflicted again with guilt and shame, as sounds I love are associated with the most hateful wankers you could hope to meet.

Just got offed, Monday, 7 January 2008 22:58 (seventeen years ago)

I get that every time I read ILM.

Noodle Vague, Monday, 7 January 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

I did vote Blues, but AOR, Punk and Country are probably just as if not more deserving. These three are the genres at which you'll probably find the most creative stagnation, the closest adherence to 'genre' itself, sucking the dick that fucks you.

There are barely any mods anymore, either! Just pockets of hold-outs, you basically have to go and FIND them at their regularly scheduled events and even then prob 50% of the attendees just wandered in or are really indie-kid crossovers.

Laurel, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:04 (seventeen years ago)

there are, laurel! they just live in boston or new orleans or other places where people take full-grown men on scooters seriously

bell_labs, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 18:06 (seventeen years ago)

I was never a LARPer but I was in a stupid water-gun assassins game, in which absolutely everyone else WAS a LARPer. This led to guilt, then shame, then me leaving the game for good.

this is kind of interesting to me. i find a lot of people, myself included, tend to turn hostile towards people who exhibit qualities they have become ashamed or guilty of. a good example for me was that i went through an extremely radical political phase in my early twenties, and tend to be kind of disgusted when i see people of the same age caught in the same mindset.

as far as this list goes, i try not to judge mass groups of people, but what's the fun in that? if animal rights activists were separated from vegans, i might've chosen them. gonna have to go for Straight Edge, though. from my experience both of these (as well as a few others mentioned on the list) are mostly young people who had fucked up lives who feel like extreme action is required to force others to take them seriously.

Abbott, Tuesday, 8 January 2008 22:20 (seventeen years ago)

Do I get to re-post the msg board discussion about the steampunk bar opening near me?

Never mind, I checked and nothing else interesting/horrifying has been said on it.

The Book of Outhere (HI DERE), Monday, 5 October 2009 20:23 (sixteen years ago)

It's wtf in about 5 different ways.

Have also noticed a disturbing number of pretty pretty gay boys, young ones, with preppy $$ clothes and really flaming speech impediments/mannerisms, accompanied by a gaggle of glossy straight girls, Gossip-Girlish with artsy pretensions, shopping at the local fruit & veg store. Need to be much, much farther away from all these people. Time to move to Kensington???

what is "steampunk" i wonder. maybe i'll look it up. it sounds gross, but i'm sure it isn't.

nope not gross, xp to self.

i actually felt somewhat guilty because i felt partly responsible for his polyamory thing - when we were dating i had said we should be able to see other people, but that was only because i wanted to have sex with my best friend without lying about it, and i didn't yet have the guts to dump him.

If you follow the link to the site where the pic originally came from, it's pretty obvious the "steam punk" bit is just a joke. It's a site for pics of crappy fixup jobs, and whoever submitted pic (probably not the person who fixed the sink) simply named it "tapping into steam punk" for laughs.

Aren't they just "fantasy metalheads"? I.e. people who dress up as elves and LARP and write (or listen to) Tolkien-inspired metal songs. Don't these people exist where you live?

Tuomas, Friday, 5 February 2010 11:47 (fifteen years ago)

I'm not sure if it's a self-defined subculture or anything, but they certainly are a faction among Finnish metalheads. Can't tell much more about it, as my knowledge of metal is really limited.

Tuomas, Friday, 5 February 2010 11:49 (fifteen years ago)

A google search on "Fantasy Metal" turns up Lorenguard from Lafayette, Indiana. They wear puffy shirts in their promo photos, but not one of them has floppy ears, a pocketwatch, or a banjo.

The gis on Finntroll itself is pretty disappointing too. I guess the make-up is a new thing?

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 5 February 2010 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

finntroll is/was a parody power metal band, they're already in on the joke!

dyao, Friday, 5 February 2010 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

The new pics appear to be from the new issue of Terrorizer. I've never actually heard Finntroll, just seen them mentioned on ILM.
I love how Tuomas thinks these kinda guys exist everywhere though.

Pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 5 February 2010 13:04 (fifteen years ago)
