Also somewhere around the middle she'd be like "guys, it's just a few hours, can we just finish this off and go home, rather than getting into a whole bunch of lame rebellion / teenage self-expression stuff? I'm trying to read over here."

I suspect the most points you can get is finding a butchish lesbian hot and then getting along with her in a cool friendly way, since this basically screams "I have an appreciation of the beauty of people who do not fit conventional beauty and gender-role standards and who I have no chance or interest or intention in ever touching"

nabisco, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

Nabisco that is so ridiculously OFFtm I don't know where to begin. Finding butchish lesbians hot = "u want I should grow a dick?" followed by "UGH DO YOU THINK I LOOK LIKE THAT???????" followed by kicks and dumping.

HI DERE, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:18 (eighteen years ago)

I guess I did know where to begin after all, huh.

HI DERE, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:19 (eighteen years ago)

nah, lesbian (but not butch) friends have been responsible for my last two girlfriends.

Jordan, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:21 (eighteen years ago)

singular versus plural / "lesbian" versus pattern of "lesbians," which would, yeah, maybe have that effect? I feel like you get credit for getting on well with non-femmey (and especially attached) lesbians, as some kind of proof that you can engage well with women without any sexual dimension. (And then if you say "yeah, they're terrific, they're hot" you have found one of few ways to say that that doesn't suggest any interest in getting with anyone.)

nabisco, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

Different dateable pool maybe, Dan? I don't look like a very butch anything but I think of myself as much more utilitarian than ornamental so the situation N suggests is sometimes a reassuring one.

Laurel, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:24 (eighteen years ago)

We're maybe drifting off into a different crux that's more like "girls girlFRIENDS love/hate when you think they're hot":

girls where saying they're hot sounds like you want to do them / girls where saying they're hot sounds like you're just happy for them that they get to be hot

nabisco, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:32 (eighteen years ago)

Is it inconceivable for guys to find different kinds of women attractive? I'd imagine that for some women, the notion that your boyfriend/husband's attraction to you is dependent solely on its conformity to a narrow "type" he has would more disheartening.

jaymc, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

EDIT: ...would BE more disheartening.

jaymc, Monday, 14 January 2008 21:56 (eighteen years ago)

Here is a tip: in my experience, women in happy relationships couldn't give two shits about the depth of their partner's span of attraction as long as it includes her at its pinnacle.

chaki, Monday, 14 January 2008 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

Oh but Roxy, my point was that there's a whole lot of women (average height and below) who wouldn't even begin to think about anyone shorter than them -- not even consciously rule it out, but just never have it occur to them. It's common to the point of being taken for granted, but there's no sense in which it's any more logical or non-superficial than any number of things guys might like.

nabisco, Monday, 14 January 2008 23:42 (eighteen years ago)

(I mean, you can ask some women about dating shorter men and they won't even have a coherent response, it'll just be something along the lines of "but that would just be ... wrong!" or "but you wouldn't want to be looking DOWN to kiss him" or whatever -- i.e., phrases that make me glad I made it to at least mostly averageish height, cause those 5'3" dudes get whispered about: "he's okay, I guess, but he's (psst) short!")

It seems like actually tall girls go either way -- either they don't bother having a very limiting "taller than me" standard or they are exactly that selective (which tends to accompany being really good looking)

Sorry if I was all UNION, UNION there, it's just a rant I go off on ever since knowing these girls in Chicago who despite being very attractive were CONSTANTLY going (to paraphrase) WHAAA, it's so unfair, guys don't like me because I'm tall/short/brunette/small-breasted/whatever, but then if you said "what about that guy" they'd say eww, but that guy is short/bald/bad-dresser/whatever. I once got so annoyed by one of them whining to me about how nobody wanted to sleep with her that I did an incredibly dicky thing and went around the bar pointing at her and asking random guys if they wanted to get with her.

(Note that her whining about nobody wanting to sleep with her was in no way an attempt to get me to offer, which was obviously part of what was so annoying about it.)

nabisco, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:25 (eighteen years ago)

Point being I am forever amused by "it's so unfair, people who meet my superficial standards have superficial standards of their own"

nabisco, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:26 (eighteen years ago)

sort of an agressive wingman tactic, no?

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:28 (eighteen years ago)

WHAAA, it's so unfair, guys don't like me because I'm tall/short/brunette/small-breasted/whatever, but then if you said "what about that guy" they'd say eww, but that guy is short/bald/bad-dresser/whatever

this is like reverse costanza

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:33 (eighteen years ago)

"According to urbandictionary.com, a Reverse Constanza is a sex act involving a funnel, a half-pound of lean pastrami, and a donkey"

nabisco, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:37 (eighteen years ago)

my point was that there's a whole lot of women (average height and below) who wouldn't even begin to think about anyone shorter than them -- not even consciously rule it out, but just never have it occur to them.

I am tall and have only really dated a "short" guy once but have found that it's more often because shorter guys aren't comfortable dating taller women then vice versa. I think we're conditioned to assume that guys should be the taller one so when the reverse happens, it can be uncomfortable. The one time I did date someone who was legitimately short (5'3" or around there) he was really consumed and bothered by the height difference and immediately blamed that as the reason I broke up with him when in actuality I probably broke up with him because of his insecurities more than anything else.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:38 (eighteen years ago)

one of my roommates in college was really short and dating (and eventually married) a tall, pretty girl. i remember he would always pick her up and wrestle and stuff to assert his masculinity.

Jordan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:41 (eighteen years ago)

"stuff"

Jimmy The Mod Awaits The Return Of His Beloved, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 00:50 (eighteen years ago)

for me: girls who have no common attributes with me (eg. they're tall, leggy, narrow-hipped, blonde, blue-eyed)/ girls who have many common attributes (eg. big hips, short, brown-eyed, dark-haired)

obv guys have a wide span of attraction, but my instinctive insecurities pay no heed to this rationale. and in the reverse, i will normally find guys attractive who look like the person i'm currently dating.

As in, like, having any inclination to touch her. (Then, obviously, not now.) I have met about 10 too many girls who seem enthusiastic about the idea of being Audrey-as-Holly, but I think we're probably all together on that one.

Sorry, I would have checked but couldn't be bothered Googling 'Audrey Hepburn death' at work. But in all honesty dead is dead as far as this argument goes.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 10:33 (eighteen years ago)

back to nabisco's height difference issue. i think this is fairly straightforward. *sexism alert* girls basically want someone taller/bigger than them because they want their dude to be the analog of daddy who makes them feel safe. this is why it just feels wrong to be involved with a dude who's smaller than them, or even the same size (or maybe they don't want to have the appearance of having a different role relationship). to be involved with them, the girl would have to perform a post-mod mind trick and imagine them into a different physical presence. which pretty much isn't gonna happen. this isn't true of lots of girls, of course. but maybe those girls' daddies aren't bigger than them, or weren't protective figures e.g. because absent through divorce or otherwise, or they're just more self-reliant, etc.

many dudes on the other hand want to be daddy, and maybe get off on filling the role (hence, ahem, "who's your daddy?" which isn't to say that girls don't get off on it either). or at least, they accept that it's typically expected of them, or, like the girl, are uncomfortable taking a different role (or at least having the appearance of doing so). to the extent guys want to score a tall girl, it may be to show that they can win on long odds. of course, some (many?) guys might actually, similar to girls, want their partner to be a protective mommy figure, but there's a decent chance this isn't what their intended partner wants, or may be awkward in one way or another. perhaps same height/same height is a compromise, or a physical analog for equality of roles.

re hepburn, i think there are different types of guys who 'fetishize' (ie like) her, because she's played more than one type of role. she's played 'helpless' (exciting for some) and she's played 'in charge/unpredictable' (exciting for others). of course, some/many guys might just like her in the 'charming' way, rather than the 'we wants ta fuck' way. (which take is more adolescent, btw?) girls who like guys for liking her might like that guys' appreciate her characters (or her character), i.e. they like that the guy is sympatico with them in that regard. some/many girls who hate guys for liking her may do so in no small part because they have a problem with their relative body sizes. (oh no!)

gabbneb, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 12:44 (eighteen years ago)

excellent *sexism alert* there, gabb.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 12:50 (eighteen years ago)

it's not sexist if it's acceptable for girls to want a daddy figure, but not for guys to want a mommy figure, of course

gabbneb, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:02 (eighteen years ago)

i doubt any of this applies to britishes. war babies & c.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:04 (eighteen years ago)

gabbneb, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

But who knows, there might be some kind of really jacked up locker room where guys are standing around going "omg, have you seen Roman Holiday? Man, I wanna smash that, just grab onto those big collarbones and ... damn, that's what I call elegant"

haha

Ronan, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:33 (eighteen years ago)

I went off Kirsten Dunst altogether when someone pointed out she looks like Billy Corgan with hair and breasts.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHA. She does!!

Gab - just hateable because I can't see the appeal - at all.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:34 (eighteen years ago)

lol. tho, and i could be imagining this, i think i may have actually heard discussion of a.h. in r.h. among straight dudes in a locker room. they were old, tho.

Old and gay?

Tom D., Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:35 (eighteen years ago)

i just googled kirsten dunst and found photoshopped porn pic of a threeway w/her jennifer love heweitt and britney spears - which is totes trifecta of girls girls hate when u think theyre hot - also cause its photoshopped none is making sex face all is making smile for camera face which is pretty great in its own way

What? That picture pretty much proves my point!

I just googled her to make sure she does have breasts before replying (again) to MDC's statement about her resemblance to Billy Corgan. In case anyone was wondering - she does.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

BTW - I know I'm being really harsh on her here, I don't think she's ugly or anything just def not anything special.

ENBB, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:39 (eighteen years ago)

gabbneb, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 13:49 (eighteen years ago)

I'm with Jaymc and Dan and Mandee here: I don't think it should matter who your partner finds hot (unless it's a kid or someone morbidly anorexic), if you know that he/she finds you attractive too. I've never had a specific type of person I'd find especially hot, so I don't think saying someone who's not like my partner is hot automatically means I don't find her hot.

One good think about dating a bisexual girl is, if you're a bisexual guy, you can drool over the same people. Or argue whether or not someone is hot.

I was just thinking this thread needed a Tuomas post.

it's not about "I don't think it should" though; if it pisses someone off, it pisses them off.

homosexual II, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 14:46 (eighteen years ago)

Yeah, I know if something pisses someone off, it's probably best not to say it. It's just that personally I don't quite understand this sort of thing. Like, the previous girl I dated told me, after we broke up, that one good thing about me was that I wasn't jealous of her male friends (most of her friends were guys). I was kinda surprised, because before she told me this, the idea that I should be jealous of her friends, or that she might think I'm jealous of them, hadn't even crossed my mind. But apparently she'd had that problem with other guys she'd dated. Sometimes I just don't get people.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 14:50 (eighteen years ago)

feeling's mutual

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

Tuomas, that might have been code for "lol I bang my guy friends, you're still in there"

HI DERE, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 14:51 (eighteen years ago)

When I was in high school my best friend was this girl, and all of her boyfriends were jealous of me. Once at a party one of them even ran to a room where I was having sex with a girl, because he thought I was there sexing with her! You'd think one would have enough trust in his girlfriend not to think she's cheating him with her bloody best friend?!

(x-post)

Tuomas, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 14:57 (eighteen years ago)

Huh.

HI DERE, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 14:59 (eighteen years ago)

Dan, it was even more confusing, because all of her male friends I met were either gay or spoken for (or both).

oh good.

Mark G, Tuesday, 15 January 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, maybe that was kinda weirdly worded. The story is as follows: I was at a house party, and at some point I went upstairs to have sex with this girl I was fooling around with at the moment. My best friend and her current boyfriend were also there. At some point the boyfriend couldn't find her anymore (it was a big house), because she'd gone down to the basement to puff some weed. Then he heard someone mention that I was upstairs doing it with some girl. He thought the girl in question was my friend, i.e. his girlfriend. He then ran into the room we were in, shouting "What the hell is going on in here?!". Then he looked at the girl I was with, realized she was someone else altogether, became totally embarrassed, muttered "Sorry...", and went away.

Dunst has that problem for me where she makes me think of Dutch people inbreeding or something

(though a quick unsuccessful google to figure out what kind of name "Dunst" is turns up that her parents are named Klaus and Inez, which suggests the exact opposite)

I hereby disavow some/many of the places gabbneb has taken my short/tall discussion. I mean, we could psychoanalyze all day and come up with lots of complicated interconnecting reasons about why, but the bottom line is just this basic common idea that the male part of a hetero couple should be taller, or at least shouldn't be a whole bunch shorter

(there is a whole other discussion to be had re: people who really want partners to conform to whatever commonplace young notion they had of what their partner would be like VS. people who don't really care about that, or maybe even care in the opposite direction)

nabisco, Wednesday, 16 January 2008 01:37 (eighteen years ago)

I thought of something that seemed relevant to the thread, but kind of backwards! Once I was describing the bourne identity to a friend and mentioned that Franke Potente was in it (love!) and he was like, "oh, that ugly chick from Run Lola Run?" and I was immediately like, "SHE IS NOT UGLY I HATE BOYS!!!" and was mad at him for days. so i guess I'm lol crazy.
