I once visited Beetlejuice's website, where I clicked on and viewed what is still, literally, the most horrifying, degrading piece of video content I have ever seen: Beetlejuice, as a hired 'guest' at some meathead's bachelor party, having sex with a pair of miserable looking stripper/hookers, while rapey dudes chanted and pumped their fists in a circle around the action.

Seriously, it was absolutely soul-crushing on every level. I would rather watch a 2 Girls 1 Cup remake starring my grandparents than watch that again.

as for him losing credibility b/c he divorced his first wife ... really, that's so old hat that i don't feel like discussing it. if HS is to be believed, though, and without access to the divorce/property settlement papers, it had more to do with his workaholism than anything else. and just b/c he's divorced doesn't mean that he still doesn't love his original wife.

i mean, really, Howard is like an older brother that i never had but always wished that i did. and it didn't hurt that he was (is?) really kind of a nerdy guy himself (THAT gives him more credibility to many of his longtime fans than his marital status). sort of a "it gets better" for teenage hetero males in the NYC or Philly metro areas who grew up during the late 80s/early 90s. or that's what i think anyway.

Well, this is it: A statement 'needs' to be made about this, specifically because he made such an issue about it during this film and the book.

Which he may well have done, so I don't know.

I bought the book on my first visit to NY (read it on the flight back), and rented the movie some time after it came out, he's not that big over here (although he's been on the Chris Evans TFIFriday prog, eventually deciding they both were kindred spirits after all (and then left each other alone, thank F)...

He did an interview with Piers last week for his new show, it's worth having a look as PM tries to be all combative at first and Stern just blows through it all, like he's heard it all a million times before, kinda funny.

I watched the first half hour of the interview. Howard came off well I thought, deflecting Piers without much difficulty. The next day on Howard's show he was saying in retrospect that he was sorry he didn't get to talk about what he was promoting until much later in the interview. Having the guest schill for their product is standard interview practice in America -- perhaps this is not the case in England, so they may have been playing different ballgames to start with. So no one came out the winner. Sweeping the camera around the ground, shooting up, and the weird blue 80s vibe of Piers' studio were somewhat distracting.

At the minute the show is really coasting, losing Artie, and not bringing people into his chair on a temp basis like they did with Jackie is a big mistake as the focus is on Howard and Robin's personal lives which are both hella boring at the minute. Also, there's also a curious disconnect wrt the second tier people, very little of the interpersonal backroom stuff is happening, which is the stuff that I like to hear to be honest.

Career highlight for Will today, as he comes in at the end of Howard's rant about not knowing what to eat for lunch, and says, "Soup with beans?"

sort of bombed on letterman with good material but all over the place timing.

is the nick and artie show any good? i haven't missed it so far and i think it's really good but i've heard a lot of people saying the opposite. nick dipaolo... sometimes he seems unwilling to play along with the format and fucks with callers in really obnoxious ways, and he seems too quick to shut down artie's bits.

Nick and Artie is OK but not good enough to listen to consistently. Artie in my opinion is a sideman and Nick is just not up to par yet. More than anything I wish Artie would go back with Howard.

a caller finally directly broached the topic and asked why artie doesn't go back on stern. he said,
hey, it was my fault, can't blame them. i screwed it up.

I haven't been following the live show recently, but I've been enjoying the Stern Show Shuffle, which is just a random selection of long clips going back, occasionally it'll misfire, but in the main I'm digging it.

Now HS is down to a couple of days a week, they are really pushing the archives, we've got Stern Show Shuffle, Mammary Lane, Mastertape Theatre and now Sirius So-Far. Just as well I guess, as show is boring as hell the the mo'.

A few weeks ago a friend of mine, a hardcore lefty, organic-food buying, only listens to pre-war jazz sort, out of nowhere extolled the virtues of Howard Stern, declaring him hilarious, perceptive, the whole gamut. Sort of blew my mind. He grew up in New Jersey, I grew up in PA, so we both grew up with this guy on the air. And yet I grew up thinking him an innocuously reactionary, vaguely libertarian distraction, and my friend ... a genius. So it goes.

he's gotten a bit more liberal in the past decade or so ... esp. b/c he's explicitly pro-gay nowadays and has gone after Sarah Palin, Santorum and anti-evolution jackasses.

Yeah, but he's still obnoxious and cynical in the worst way, disguising his sexism and misogyny as a statement on his audience and their tastes as much as anything else. He sort of reminds me of Larry Flynt, in a way, an opportunist just shrewd enough to make me feel even worse about his reach and effectiveness.

i dunno.

compared to 2012 rock radio host misogyny and sexism, stern is pretty mild. a lot of those attitudes are mocked on the show. the attitudes of guys like ronnie "let's fuck some whores"/the limo driver mund, sal, jd are ridiculed. and there's a balance from stern himself and robin that doesn't happen on similar shows.

shrewd is a fair description, though. stern is always smart about stuff like this, balancing i think genuine discomfort with some on-show antics while also letting things go.

but yeah, try sitting through an hour of bubba's show or your rick and buzzy in the morning on your local fm rock station and then sit through an hour of stern (which will be him talking about reality shows, talking to robin about her medical problems, and a call from bobo).

a lot of old-timey Stern fans call him "Hampton Howie" these days, and spit nails at the mention of his 2nd wife Beth.

to me, 2006 to present is the time period closest to my heart but i love it all and understand the hamptons howie thing.

Feel like he might unravel a bit this summer, when the live shows start. I feel like he's very nervous about that and is taking it out on his radio staff.

As far as I can tell, Sour is on the autistic spectrum somewhere, evidenced by his difficulty with interaction (voices, never having had a relationship), his ability to recall facts, and musical talent. He also said he works at a place called 'Autism Speaks.' And on the top of one of his keyboard he had a Thomas the Tank toy, a favorite of children on the spectrum.

The JD/Jason fight (Howard TV version) was so hard to watch. JD has gained weight and looks stressed out.

i'm not that familiar with pre-satellite stern, so this is just from digging into krock/wnbc stern. also my credibility has been destroyed by not realizing robin wasn't even in the studio.

his bigotry, i guess so. compared to bits from the 80s and 90s, it wouldn't be hard to look tolerant. the one thing that puts me off about old stern, when i dig into it, is the racist and homophobic shit mostly because it's just the dumbest fucking shit and doesn't fulfill my requirements for comedy, like insight or novelty. there's less bigotry on the show and people like sal that say genuinely racist shit are mocked for their beliefs-- even if the shit sal says would look tame compared to dumb racist shit on oldschool stern. his approach to women over the years has moderated. i think part of this is: divorce + his daughters growing up + beth turning him into a bitch.

on air, i think the change has come not so much from howard's explicit bigotry, which i don't think there was ever a lot of and always seemed insincere but more i think deciding not to keep dudes like jackie around. (what's the difference between jackie doing fag jokes/black people steal tv jokes and artie on high pitch mike?)

i mean... it ain't npr but compared to a lot of the second rate motherfuckers that came after howard and still basically do a version of howard's show and even compared to my local morning zoo, it's pretty tame.

My thought is now that he's part of the establishment, he doesn't have to resort to some of his old tricks. However, there's still some fire left in him. Those moments when he just fucking loses it and yells are magic.

Also he talks about retirement all the time but dude will be in front of a microphone somewhere 'til he dies.

Somehow I'd never really heard more than five minutes of HSS but, after the Artie Lange interview on WTF, ended up bouncing around some YTs and ran into this. God bless obsessive fans who put together stuff like this. Killed the whole thing over the course of a month; think it's about ~26hrs total. Aside from primarily documenting Artie's heroin addiction (via any clips that might hint at Artie's problems-- sick days, massive arguments, admissions, nodding/falling asleep in show, etc.), the collection as a whole explains a lot of HSS' appeal past cheap lols / "u gonna show us yr tits?" type stuff. A+ stuff, totally worth grinding though.

the last time i listened, the show started with benjy taking a quarter of a sleeping pill and his girlfriend calling king of all blacks and i turned it off.

well it was the benjy vortex but howard got out of it pretty quickly.

"the night before, benjy had chest pains and she called beetlejuice" or whatever made me laugh though. when i said "i turned it off," i guess i meant "i kept listening to the entire show." i dunno, i have the softest spot for 2001 to 2005 when howard was particularly prickly and unhappy. and 2006-2009 when it was messy and things seemed fresh again and artie was there.

having a personal investment in the show, i'm sort of satisfied everyone is less unhappy and they can ease into their twilight years and he's going to interview old rockstars about woodstock or whatever, or madonna is going to be on the show in some barbara walters-type thing but like every stern listener ever, i will still complain that the show kinda sucks now.

yeah 2006-2009 was probably what was for me the best era. and yet something is lost in the replays from that era. i appreciate how comparatively calm and relaxed the show is now. which is perhaps an odd thing to say about a comedy show.

but i think old wise howard is still pretty good. my favorite part of the show has always just been howard and robin shooting the shit so that's still pretty good as far as i can tell. probably helps that i didn't listen for about 3-4 years until a few months ago so it's like hanging out with old friends again.

the show's okay now, dull as it's ever been. appreciating no bobo. all the bits are horrible. i wonder who listens, though, outside of aging diehard fans.

I hadn't listened for close to 20 years, and then started up again this year. I like the interviews -- in fact, the bits and all the "wack pack" characters start to feel soul-crushing after a while, while the interviews reveal Stern as not only a real person, but an INCREDIBLE interviewer. Seriously, he may be the best interviewer alive today. I usually don't give a shit about celebrity interviews either, but this guy had me interested in Mayim Bialik, Alex Baldwin, James fucking Taylor, David fucking Crosby.

I also like the stuff where he just talks about his life, Beth, etc. He's mellowed over the years (except when he gets mad at his own staff), and other than a juvenile sense of humor, he could be a better Barbara Walters than Barbara Walters.

I think my favorite part of the show is when H loses his cool and screams. On Monday he was setting up a Beetlejuice game and there was some discussion about how many questions would be asked, when H yells "3 OUT OF 5 SEEMS RIGHT"

I didn't know about the Artie Quitter podcast until seeing it mentioned in this thread the other day. I had a long drive, so I checked out Artie's show from last Monday where he started it out talking about Stern's show uninterrupted for about 50 minutes straight. I can't remember the last time I found myself hanging onto his every word like that. It kinda made me miss his era of the show even more. I was expecting a reaction from Stern the following day (last Tuesday I guess), but was kinda sad to hear that it wasn't acknowledge at all. I'm happy Howard discussed it this week though. I guess it took him a few days to get around to it.

Michael Rapaport surprise appearance on the Wrap Up Show today was so great. Gary was getting down on himself saying he could never get laid on tinder because he's "ugly," and Rapaport went on and on about how good looking he is. Rapaport's podcast is so much better, Artie's is too depressing.

i'm relistening to the entire 2008 year again. the thing i notice most when i listen to recent shows is, the room sounds smaller and quieter, usually. it's mostly stern's voice, bit of robin. the way the studio sounded through the 2000s, it's often people talking over each other, fred hitting drops over that.

i recently listened to the entire year of 1995 stern shows, too, when he was -- as the article mentions -- wishing aids on his enemies. there was a chicago station that was refusing to pay him, decided to take him to court, and he over and over again calls for the station manager to get aids and then cut himself shaving and bleed into his childrens cornflakes. as well, he was in the middle of his beef with mancow, and he would get into 20-40 minute raps about how he was going to exhume the recently deceased father of mancow and fist him. 1995 is also deep in the oj trial, so you also get lots of racist impressions of johnny cochrane in amos n andy voice + 40 minutes on a "weekend at oj's" bit. jackie is relatively quiet unless called upon, and you can forget billy west is even there. if you sit and listen to the full 1995 shows, it's a quieter studio than the sirius golden years, too. and howard is boring and self-centered and lame as he is 20 years later and you notice it more when the studio has fewer voices.

i haven't listened enough recently, maybe.

Great show overall today too, with Jimmy Kimmel on in the first hour, then playing clips during the news of him on Kelly Ripa's show asking her the questions Howard gave him earlier.
