SO how is your mattress? Do you like it? Do you rotate it often?
Is there anything more hellish and baffling than shopping for mattresses? Slate says it is the worst shopping experience in the world and I agree.
I have a futon with a box spring mattress, which, new w/frame & all cost me $400. Got a memory foam topper for $60, which makes a huge comfort difference.
A dream of mine is having a giant-ass bed w/magic mattress, but I wouldn't do it until I owned a house.

This is OUR local mattress salesman, Big Mick the Mattress Man, from whom I bought my futon. He has all the local ads and is a badass bcz he growls his catchphrase like Macho Man Randy Savage. Srsly these ads are insanely entertaining. I want to make a movie of him starring Paul Giamatti as Big Mick. Someone plays me, buying a mattress (cannot figure out who would be cast here), and Anjelica Huston plays my mom-in-law.

about a year ago i celebrated new job status w/a made-to-order mattress from these people, "litvinoff & fawcett" -
http://www.landf.co.uk
they are about a 15-minute drive down the road. i told them how many centimetres each side of the mattress should be. i had a choice between firm and regular and i said firm. they were like "are you SURE? because 'firm' is really really firm!" i sat on a couple of their floor model mattresses to see, and i was right - i did want firm. i am happier about this purchase than any other i have ever made with the possible exception of my first car. i remember to rotate every two months and flip every six months. i don't have a box spring for it but i do have a bed with slats, and it goes directly on the slats, which gives it a little spring and allows it to breathe, which is apparently important.
someday i would love to be able to afford one of their beds, but i doubt that day will ever come, frankly.

I was debating getting a new mattress when I moved to a house since I hadn't slept on mine for a few months after moving out of the ex's place and we'd used mine. Guess what? My decent pillowtop mattress has no emotional baggage and I still sleep like a baby on it.

when i moved in with my boyfriend, we managed to score a queen size tempurpedic for half price because it was a floor model. totally awesome bed, though I don't know if I would have paid full price.
the frame we have is this totally gigantic 4-poster Balinese teak opium bed that we scored on craigslist for mad cheap. it's all pegged construction so it was literally puzzling to get it all together. and it's huge. as in, the base is about 2.5 feet off the ground, then we have the boxspring on top of that, and then the mattress, so i have to haul my ass up almost 4 feet up into bed. kinda bothersome, tbh.

who has opinions on boxsprings? they're freaking expensive - what do they actually do besides make your bed taller and bouncier?
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 19 February 2010 16:32 (fifteen years ago)
Here is my opinion on our box spring, which sits on a metal bed frame: I'd rather have a platform bed with just a mattress as I think that the box spring/bed frame set up is responsible for the two main problems with our sleeping set up as it currently stands, which are 1) that our bed being really springing so that when one person moves around, the other person gets seriously jostled; and 2) the middle of the bed is getting a little dippy so that it's becoming harder and harder for us not to sleep in a pile in the middle of the bed.

why do they even exist in the first place?? i honestly have never known
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 19 February 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)
Are box springs a hold-over from when mattresses were bags stuffed with cushy stuff and didn't have internal structures (or not as good as modern structures, anyway)? Seems like the modern mattress has become it's own box spring (which reminds me of the theory that personal fitness is the new and internalized corset, Okay enough free-association).

^^^why we keep you around
― nitzer ebbebe (gbx), Friday, 19 February 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
I've been told that it's to keep the bottom of the mattress ventilated, presumably so body heat/moisture/etc can escape and air can circulate, which is a good argument for not putting a mattress directly on a flat surface. But platform beds have slats or some kind of ventilation anyway.
― Let's see how tough Aquaman is once we get him in the water. (Laurel), Friday, 19 February 2010 16:53 (fifteen years ago)
Another major advantage of mattress on platform bed: allows old arthritic dogs to share bed.
xp Elmo:I'm interested in getting a Tempur-pedic (or more likely, one of the many half price memory foam competitors) the next move I make. My major concern is ventilation/feeling clammy since there's no air circulation through the mattress surface. Is this an issue?
― Derelict, Friday, 19 February 2010 16:56 (fifteen years ago)
Your boxspring theory makes a lot of sense, Laurel, especially since from my admittedly limited research, it seems like it's hard to even by them separately anymore? Or at least it's hard to buy a bed frame that accommodates a mattress and box spring.
I have the same questions about memory foam mattresses as Derelict. I am enchanted by the idea of resting my wine glass next to me on the bed while Jeff tosses and turns in his sleep, but put off by the thought of all that memory foam molding to the shape of my body, like a clammy hug from an inappropriately grabby, synthetic relative.

the tempurpedic mattress is thoroughly great! and the only time that i ever slightly resent its spongy embrace is in the dead heat of summer, but even at that it's not really different from any other bed i've slept in -- fresh sheets and a tiny sprinkle of talc make it bearable. the foam is really not quite as enveloping as one might expect.
the thing with the giant bedframe is that the only place it fits in the bedroom is a little alcove set off by a proscenium arch -- it's a bit of a tight fit, with one side flush against the wall and about 2 feet of clearance on the other. since the bed is really tall, the pendant lamp that hangs down from the ceiling hovers uncomfortably low over the bed -- romping in bed usually involves banging one's head on the fixture.
there aren't many candles, but i did make curtains. they completely block all light. lovely, cozy, and dark.

i adore my bed because it's my first real, post-poor-student-twin-bed bed. i got a cheap frame from craigslist and a box spring and mattress from a couple discount places in the area because i honestly don't now or care enough at this point in my life to comparison shop for more expensive bedding (i probably spent $300-something altogether). my bed is pretty much my favorite place in the world. i could go on.

I thought the deal with box spring bases is they were meant as the base of the bed if you *didnt* have an actual bedframe/slat base. The one I had, had legs with wheels on it. So you had box spring, mattress. Thats it. The base was off the floor about 1/3 to 1/2 a foot on the legs. I used one that'd been my parents first bed from when they were married, so it was 30+ years old and still going strong. Then I got sick of shitty cheap mattresses plus I wanted a nice frame so I turfed the lot, bought an $800 pocket spring mattress and a nice ikea frame.

Current leader is the Ikea Mandal, but they're new enough here I don't know anyone who's had an Ikea bed (ie no idea how sturdy they are).Second place is the CB2 Alpine Gunmetal bed - but it has to be shipped, so with tax it's almost $800.
Thought about building my own platform bed (the plans are online - 2x4s, plywood, casters), but even with locked casters apparently they can become mobile at bad times.

i've had my mattress since i was around 4 years old. it still accomodates my six foot lanky streak of a skeleton. my back is fucked, though.
― jumpskins, Tuesday, 10 May 2011 00:38 (fourteen years ago)
my mattress is so so bad. has springs poking through so every night i have to form an s-shape to try and avoid feeling them on the bony bits like my hips. tried flipping it over, other side is even worse, swivelling it 180 degrees, same but with springs in different places. need to get a new mattress desperately but im kindof between places right now so it feels like it might be a waste. are those 'toppers' things any good?

I think I need a new one due to stiff neck issues when waking up its too soft - too saoft man
― coffeetripperspillerslyricmakeruppers (Latham Green), Monday, 13 June 2011 20:26 (fourteen years ago)
About to go get the Ikea Mandal bed tomorrow -- supposedly it is indeed sturdy because it's solid wood and better construction than the typical ikea product (so I've read). Also dropped the most I've ever spent on furniture on a Simmons Beautyrest mattress. When your pregnant wife is no longer able to sleep at night it becomes time to get rid of the 8-year-old hand-me-down futon and spend what you have to spend to get comfort.

I also got sucked into buying a fancy pillow. I sleep on my stomach with my hands under the pillow, so I always either have neck aches because the pillow is too high or numb hands because it's too thin. This thing was fucking amazing -- it was like my head and my hands were in two different dimensions.
― Disraeli Geirs (Hurting 2), Tuesday, 4 October 2011 03:56 (fourteen years ago)
So, holding off on the frame since the mattress works fine on our old futon frame for now. It's apparently a bit firmer than we remember though. Anyone have experience using a pad make the thing a bit softer? Seems silly I know. Or do firm mattresses tend to 'break in' a little?
― Disraeli Geirs (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 5 October 2011 20:33 (fourteen years ago)
they break in. make sure to rotate. apparently, it does matter.
― remy bean, Wednesday, 5 October 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)
i'm getting a Serta spring mattress! i need something firm/with coils. doesn't hurt that it's inexpensive! right now i tried "Leesa" another version of "Casper" and it's breaking my back

We got a Saatva and are pretty happy with it
― El Tomboto, Friday, 7 July 2017 16:45 (eight years ago)
yeah? how long have you had it? i was looking at them too....
― surm, Friday, 7 July 2017 16:47 (eight years ago)
2 years or so
― El Tomboto, Friday, 7 July 2017 22:39 (eight years ago)
oh wow ok i'm going to look into that again. thank you.
― surm, Saturday, 8 July 2017 14:51 (eight years ago)
actually yeah we went to the mattress showroom, got a Serta, planned to return it when we got the Saatva, then the deliverymen fucked up the Serta when they brought us the Saatva, and it took forever to get the claim processed since the store wouldn't accept the damaged Serta. Man, this thread in my gmail archives goes on for 2 months.
― El Tomboto, Saturday, 8 July 2017 14:56 (eight years ago)
ohh! v interesting and helpful. you may v well have just helped me avoid going through the same two months.
― surm, Saturday, 8 July 2017 15:19 (eight years ago)
I've got an Ikea king size bed and a memory foam mattress. Fine if you're sleeping alone, but as soon as two people get in, you find yourselves tipping towards the middle of the bed into each other. Got a feeling that the mattress is too heavy for the bed.
― Shat Parp (dog latin), Monday, 10 July 2017 08:22 (eight years ago)
the mattress that has been in my flat since before i moved in (19 years ago) did that thing they do in the cartoons on saturday - there was a pointy spring sticking out of the middle of it.
so, bought a new memory foam mattress from argos (not the argos home brand one, the next one up, silentnight). it's a bit odd, softer than the current one by some way and you can sink into it in a very localised way - my heavy top half sinks in but my legs 'float' so end up higher than my head (at least it feels that way). i will get used to it.
anyway, a question. the bed base is also wrecked and needs replacing. the one i like has slats (the current one is a divan and is, or was, solid). will i feel the slats through the foam? the foam seems to be backed with some stiffer material so i think it'll be ok but...
― koogs, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 19:58 (six years ago)
you don't feel slats through the bed but ime slats are less comfortable than a box spring
― findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 20:01 (six years ago)
i currently sleep on a shitty ikea mattress and slatty base combo and it is shit
― findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, 29 May 2019 20:02 (six years ago)
I have a Cali King size foam mattress on a platform bed. I love it. It's like an island.
― Yerac, Wednesday, 29 May 2019 20:05 (six years ago)
Box springs feel like a foreign concept here - none of the 300+ things I've seen online have them, things either use slats or a flat, hard surface. Maybe it's my price-point.
My bed at university (same halls for 3 years) were just cheap, industrial foam slabs on solid wooden frames and were no trouble at all. This new fangled memory foam still feels wrong, like quicksand.
― koogs, Thursday, 30 May 2019 04:16 (six years ago)
It was very hard in the US to find a large size platform bed that didn't use slats. Mine has upholstered flat boards and it was pretty decently priced. Box springs just seem like a waste to me.
― Yerac, Thursday, 30 May 2019 12:39 (six years ago)
I'm content with a $200 mattress set purchased 17 years ago. Before that, I was content with a hand me down 1960s era mattress. There's a 50% chance that I rotate the mattress when moving house.
Most modern mattresses are too firm for me, and ridiculously thick. I mean, these hip-height beds I see in showrooms and when visiting relatives are all about sex positions, aren't they?
― despondently sipping tomato soup (Sanpaku), Thursday, 30 May 2019 17:12 (six years ago)
love a firm mattress. my back would kill for one
― findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 30 May 2019 17:21 (six years ago)
i guess i have used box springs in the past because my mattresses were shitty and i required the extra support
― findom haddie (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 30 May 2019 17:24 (six years ago)
I was just looking up a mattress and have to report that review sites include whether the mattress is suitable for sex
fucking mattress indeed
― mh, Thursday, 30 May 2019 17:34 (six years ago)
I think I got the firmest foam mattress that was listed. I never realized how hard my childhood bed was growing up until I had to sleep in it again after several years and I was like wtf mom? Even my spouse was amazed how hard that bed is. I like the foam because I wake up very quickly so it's nice not to feel someone shifting around beside you.
And totally rotate our mattress every 6 months.
― Yerac, Thursday, 30 May 2019 17:59 (six years ago)
It never occurred to me that hip height beds may be a sex thing. I just thought it was a princessy thing.
― Yerac, Thursday, 30 May 2019 18:01 (six years ago)
dated someone who had her bed elevated a little further (mattress, box springs, then little extenders on the bed frame legs) to store stuff under it and that theory has some merit
― mh, Thursday, 30 May 2019 18:06 (six years ago)
We got an eluxury foam mattress a few years ago, with some trepidation because we weren't familiar with the name, and it's been great.
― The Bite Game with Jim Lamprey (WmC), Thursday, 30 May 2019 18:09 (six years ago)
on average mattresses are supposed to last about 10 years apparently.the one i talked about wayy upthread ^ developed a musty smell a couple of years ago that we couldn't get rid of. dunno what happened. went back to exactly the same people, got exactly the same mattress, exactly as happy as we were to get our new mattress now as we were then: very. firmest we could get. though we have a futon in the spare room which i almost prefer because it is so goddamn firm.
― Lil' Brexit (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 30 May 2019 19:27 (six years ago)
We have a futon on a slatted bed base. I would have it on the floor if we could but that has been ruled too firm.

I live in a shithole that is a major bed manufacturing hub of the UK these days. Many of them are diabolical zero-hours minimum wage companies and at least one of them (Kozee Sleep) got into slight trouble for using imported slave labour doing 16 hour shifts! It makes me feel better about only being able to afford charity shop furniture these days... I couldn't care less if last owner expired in the damned thing, will still sleep on it :p
― calzino, Thursday, 30 May 2019 21:56 (six years ago)
"dated someone who had her bed elevated a little further to store stuff under it and that theory has some merit"
sure she did
I have an Avocado natural mattress. It came in a box. It's a king size and is absurdly comfortable. I've gotten arthritis in my spine, hips, knees, etc and our 20 year old queen with a box spring was killing me even though my wife thought it was fine.
― akm, Thursday, 30 May 2019 22:09 (six years ago)
guy who sold me my foam mattress advised to rotate every 3 mos. said foam ones need to be rotated more often than spring ones.

New mattress time! Anyone have any experience with Leesa Sapira hybrids? That's the one that's most caught my eye.

I got one of those Casper mattresses from Costco and it’s so cozy
― Heez, Sunday, 28 December 2025 00:21 (two weeks ago)
keeping an eye on this thread because it also needs to be new mattress time in this house. I think I want a hybrid one again? hrrrm.
― mh, Tuesday, 30 December 2025 15:23 (two weeks ago)
Yeah I think I'm settling (har har) on the Leesa Sapira, after reading lots of things about it and other competitors. Saatvas (recommended upthread) seem like the top-rated brand overall, but they're $1,000+ more in the categories and size I'm looking at. Only question now is whether to spring an extra $300-$400 for the Sapira "Chill" option, which has extra cooling. Just not sure how necessary it might be. But the mattress comes with like a 4-month trial period, so if we don't like it we can trade in or up.

please check that out asap!
not that I’m using you for review purposes and really want to buy a new mattress asap or anything 😉

dl my last two mattresses (which lasted 10 years each respectively) were handmade by these guys - https://www.landf.co.uk and they have been great.
Though i believe LocalGarda also bought one and he says it was not robust enough for his, er requirements?
― Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 31 December 2025 10:09 (one week ago)
lol, it ripped at the side after two/three years of one careful owner. i left it in my flat when i moved as decided it had done its time and moving a mattress not worth it for a ripped one.
my current one is john lewis, i spent circa £900 on it but it's the best one i've had and no problems after five years or so.

About a decade ago a friend of mine who worked in a Government agency tackling national crime, told me that the shadowy world of mattress sellers in London was a major hotspot for organised crime, featuring: mattress companies being a major part of the money laundering system , firms going bankrupt overnight and starting up again the next day, warehouse torching, and mattress delivery people being targeted by rival firms. One upside was that the 'informal economy' had led to a wide range of firms in London competing to get a mattress delivered to your door in a matter of a few hours ...
I see mattress fraud and organised crime links still seems to be a thing though - caveat emptor: Organised Crime and Reporting Project:UK Bed Makers Warn of Mattress Fraud

We just did too! Although we got a foam, not hybrid. I've never owned a foam mattress so there was some hesitation, but we decided to go for it and I find it extremely comfortable. Great price too, compared to everything else we were looking at
― Vinnie, Wednesday, 31 December 2025 14:07 (one week ago)
I can and do sleep on anything, but my bf is a choosy sleeper and we oddly lucked into the greatest mattress situation imaginable.
I found a local mattress dealer, after weeks of “the same fucking mattresses” at all the chains. He ordered his mattresses custom made from mattress factories in Surrey BC. I went in and said “I’m looking for a pocket spring mattress with absolutely no memory foam” and got an extra firm one with the springs going right to the edge— which is great when it’s my bf and I in a queen with our large dog between us taking up a lot of space.
I’m unclear as to how much the mattress dealer was “being a crank” and was speaking the truth, but he said that Sealy and Serra et al were all purchased by hedge funds and were no longer worthwhile mattress manufacturers. All I know is this mattress cost 2000 CAD and is the most exquisitely comfortable thing I’ve ever slept on, lied on, spent the day working on. It never overheats, the extra firm is great for sleep and sex, and if my body grows tired of the firmness level it’s as simple as adding a mattress pad on my side of the bed.
In short: find your local cranky mattress dealer and shell out— or, if you’re like me, and can actually sleep on anything, save some money and get a Casper or whatever

Update as a follow-up: Our Leesa Sapira arrived, and one week in we are favorably impressed. You can feel the hybrid construction, in the sense that the foam top has some comfortable give to it, but there's a solid foundation so there's no sense of sinking in — to the degree that I've returned to sleeping with a second thin pillow under my regular pillow, because my body is staying more aloft and so my neck can use the extra support. There's a 120-day return window for it, but I don't foresee us needing that. My spouse reports that some persistent shoulder pain appears to be greatly alleviated.
(And Tracer, I totally forgot about the Brothers Bedding folks, so yeah I did not go look at theirs.)
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Monday, 12 January 2026 14:23 (yesterday)
I'm glad I kept my patience instead of prompting for an update yesterday! Did you end up opting for the chill hybrid feature?
― mh, Monday, 12 January 2026 19:42 (yesterday)
We didn't — after reading about it we decided it probably wasn't necessary. I mean, I'm sure it would be nice! But so far anyway not noticing any problems with it being too hot. We already had had a Tempurpedic pad on top of our old mattress (that's how we got a few more years out of it), so pretty used to sleeping on foam.
― paper plans (tipsy mothra), Monday, 12 January 2026 19:55 (yesterday)
one more question: did you go for medium-firm? I'm taking expansive notes here :D
