Anticipate forgetting Forgetting Sarah Marshall

In which Jason Segal is naked, Mila Kunis works in Hawaii, and Veronica Mars gets it on with Russell Brand.

Or: From the producers of The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up comes a comic look at one guy’s arduous quest to grow up and get over the heartbreak of being dumped—if he can only make himself start Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Struggling musician Peter Bretter (Jason Segel, Knocked Up, How I Met Your Mother) has spent six years idolizing his girlfriend, television star Sarah Marshall (Kristen Bell, Veronica Mars). He’s the guy left holding her purse in paparazzi photos and accidentally omitted from acceptance award speeches. But his world is rocked when she dumps him and Peter finds himself alone. After an unsuccessful bout of womanizing and an on-the-job nervous breakdown, he sees that not having Sarah may just ruin his life. To clear his head, Peter takes an impulsive trip to Oahu, where he is confronted by his worst nightmare: his ex and her tragically hip new British-rocker boyfriend, Aldous (Russell Brand), are sharing his hotel. But as he torments himself with the reality of Sarah’s new life, he finds relief in a flirtation with Rachel (Mila Kunis), a beautiful resort employee whose laid-back approach tempts him to rejoin the world. He also finds relief in several hundred embarrassing, fruity cocktails. For anyone who has ever had their heart ripped out and cut into a billion pieces comes a hilarious, heartfelt look at relationships—featuring Paul Rudd, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader and Jack McBrayer. Part romantic comedy, part disaster film, Forgetting Sarah Marshall is the world’s first romantic disaster comedy.

It's all about Lindsey Weir dumping him irl.

Nicole, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 00:45 (eighteen years ago)

been looking forward to this since Jason Segel was always one of my favorite dudes out of that whole crew. trailer doesn't look great (looks like Kristen Bell might have a really generic love interest part that's kind of a waste of her abilities), but i still wanna see it.

Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 04:06 (eighteen years ago)

waiting patiently for a red band trailer (although that little gag at the end was surprisingly risqué for a green band)

i liked it!

s1ocki, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)

rank w/ 40yrold, superbad, knocked up, heavyweights in terms of funny and how good it is

balls, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:35 (seventeen years ago)

i would say it's hovering just below superbad & knocked up, both which i liked a lot. it's there with 40yr old.

segel is really winning. some very good jokes. billy baldwin basically plays david caruso. the ladies are cute and charming. hawaii looks nice.

there's other good stuff but i don't want to ruin some surprises.

i dug it!

s1ocki, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:39 (seventeen years ago)

Do we get any songs from Russell Brand's character?

so i'm happy japatow made another good one. plz to let pineapple express be good!

s1ocki, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

ya and they are pretty funny. xp

Haha, nice.

this was obv way better than walk hard.

I so wanted to hope for that film. Anyway, Drillbit Taylor oh wait.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:41 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i watched the first few minutes of walk hard in a 'at the very least i will laff. at the very least this film will provide me that pleasure' thought and no, it was unbearable like a insanely long snl sketch that just never goes over. couldn't finish it, and this was in a weekend i could finish pirates/spidey/shrek 3 (ftr: spidey3>pirates3>>>>>>>>>>>>>shrek3).

heavyweights is a kidsflick apatow wrote in the 90s during or immediately after larry sanders, it's about a fat camp. ben stiller plays his character from dodgeball in it only funny, paul feig is in it, jeffrey tambor, that cute blonde that hank married on larry sanders and she ended up on vip and i haven't seen her anywhere else is in it, alot of kids that ended up w/ small roles on undeclared are in it. it's enjoyable, has 'heart' of course. effectively heavyweights : salute yr shorts :: superbad : losin' it.

balls, Thursday, 17 April 2008 02:50 (seventeen years ago)

Yes, it was pretty good. Less funny overall than Knocked Up but with considerably better characterization, at least for the leads.

Nhex, Monday, 21 April 2008 05:28 (seventeen years ago)

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 15:49 (seventeen years ago)

gotta say the ad campaign for this was totally terrible and also a misrepresentation of the movie (its not like Segel's character spends a lot of time slagging off his ex with semi-mysognystic zingers; quite the opposite). it was like they had no ad budget for it - "all we can afford is some black text on a white background"

Shakey Mo Collier, Wednesday, 30 April 2008 16:07 (seventeen years ago)

also surprised at ILM speculation that Brand's "character" is based on Devendra Banhart...? Dude seemed more like Richard Ashcroft to me (eg "we gotta do something/somebody do something" song)

Dude seems more like Russell Brand than anything!

energy flash gordon, Thursday, 1 May 2008 03:52 (seventeen years ago)

lots of plot spoilers:

I hate to be the hater here (and I'm an Apatow apologist, too), but I thought this kinda stunk. The more I think about it, the less I liked it. I never felt even a tiny bit bad for Segal's character (his poor broken heart just couldn't be mended with lots of "wacky" sex with a bunch of hot girls), and I thought the ending - while an admirable gamble with our sympathies - went the wrong way. He didn't sleep with Bell because he couldn't get hard while she was blowing him, and we're supposed to appreciate his epiphany that he can't get a boner because his heart's not in it and the truth is he loves Kunis (which is ridiculous). I couldn't buy any of it and I just thought he was an asshole through the whole thing.

I think most of the criticism in the past about women in Apatow's movies has been mostly misguided, but any of the past gripes that people have had could totally apply here. The entire checklist of lame stock females is pretty much ticked off: Bitchy careerist, naggy wife (Bill Hader's wife), dumb giggly girl in bar who will sleep with asshole guy no matter what he says, fantasy laid-back low-maintenance "one of the guys" chick, etc.

I also don't need to see any more of the "obese Hawaiian native who dispenses surfer-wisdom" characters any more, even if that's not reached central casting levels of ubiquity yet.

I definitely laughed a few times (I liked the bit where Jonah Hill gets really excited watching Russell Brand onstage, and, adjusting his crotch, says "I just went from 6 to midnight"; Paul Rudd had some good lines), I liked some of the quirk (the Dracula musical stuff was pretty inspired; I guess Segal is writing the new Muppet movie?); I liked seeing Tammy Littlenut get some work (redheaded wife of Kenneth the Page, veteran of "Strangers With Candy"). I just found the characters all pretty repellent and didn't care what happened to any of them - which was unlike most of the other Apatow-related stuff for me.

Savannah Smiles, Thursday, 1 May 2008 08:23 (seventeen years ago)

when Tammy Littlenut showed up my wife said "hey, its coppertop!"

Shakey Mo Collier, Thursday, 1 May 2008 16:15 (seventeen years ago)

max, Thursday, 1 May 2008 16:36 (seventeen years ago)

ya she was totally goofy!

s1ocki, Thursday, 1 May 2008 16:38 (seventeen years ago)

Okay, fair enough - I blew that one slightly. You're right - she just pops her head in the webcam, drawing eyerolls from Hader whenever she speaks up.

when Tammy Littlenut showed up my wife said "hey, its coppertop!"

I felt dirty when she was naked and riding Kenneth! I'm still waiting for someone to float Orlando a role, incidentally.

Totally agreed, deej... I liked how there was a lack of simple demonization for the "villain" characters in both this and Knocked Up. Refreshing for the romantic comedy genre, where characters are typically divided into "cool" or "psychotically evil" camps...

i thought this was kind of terrible. Even paul rudd was not funny. basically took a great premise and ruined it! some nice moments, obviously, and the russel brand character was great.

And i disagree that no one is a villain, isn't the titular character's humiliation pretty much the climax? (or anti-climax, as the case may be...)

ryan, Monday, 27 October 2008 17:55 (seventeen years ago)

I thought this was just okay. The script had some nice moments that rang true to life - a few vignettes of modern relationship dynamics that I hadn't seen caught on film before - so I give it some credit for originality and honesty. On the other hand, I think it had real structural and plot weaknesses and too many unfunny jokes.

some doobie brother (max), Friday, 14 November 2008 14:19 (seventeen years ago)

i guess, for me, like a lot of the apatow group of films, this sorta floats by painlessly on the charisma of the actors and general good vibes but afterwards I think about it and realize it's straight up bullshit and not a little sexist, or at best a little juvenile in its attitudes toward relationships.

I think the reason I don't mind these Apatow movies generally being way too long for comedies is that they cram in so many funny subplots and recurring gags (the dracula musical, the fake TV shows, Russell Brand's video) that have nothing to do with the main premise the movie's being promoted as that you get a lot of stuff that isn't even hinted at in the trailer.

tbh i cant really fault the movies for being way juvenile in their attitudes toward relationships because i am pretty juvenile im my attitudes toward relationships

some doobie brother (max), Friday, 14 November 2008 15:04 (seventeen years ago)

but i think the reason superbad was the most successful of all these is cause it was actually about high schoolers so it was totally excusable for them to be so retarded about girls

did anyone else think of ILX during the "I don't wanna stick my P in someone's V, I just wanna B my L on someone's T's" part?

god this is somehow a bigger wish fulfillment fantasy than the idea that that redheaded girl would ever even contemplate slobbing on jonah hill's knob in superbad. which i wouldn't really mind except it's so meanspirited towards poor veronica mars in the end!

I didn't think it was meanspirited toward her character at all. I thought her character was the only one with an unhappy ending, sure.

DANGER!!! Yeah he was so good in this.

Agreed about Veronica Mars - I was impressed that they gave her a decent shake. Most of these (slightly misogynist, male wish fulfillment romantic comedy) movies just have ridiculous cartoon villains with no redeeming value at all, but they go to lengths to show when her and Segel's relationship was good and showed some hints and times when his character dropped the ball.

Nhex, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:08 (sixteen years ago)

I had totally forgotten about this movie until this thread got bumped.

totally otm. sometimes i wonder if apatow crits have ever seen the other kinds of comedies that get made out there.

s1ocki, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

maybe i'm not giving it enough credit but when the ending for segel's character is hooking up w/hot girl who likes his weird puppet shit...and is maybe going back to school :))) i feel like it does indicate a certain mean-spiritedness to have veronica mars' ending to be "whoa i couldnt get it up for u...because i should be with that 70s show :0, also your tv show is dumb and gay" - she does get that one good scene but it felt kind of tacked on to me in the context of the rest of the movie

A B C, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:13 (sixteen years ago)

Guys she is a successful TV actress that has gossip shows dedicated to following her dating life, I'm sure she'll be fine.

i really don't think you can see the sarah marshall character as sympathetic, unless you're a douche. She's a horrible, self-centred star-fucker and our hero's realisation of this resolves the film. Anyone saying "oh why didn't he stay with Veronica Mars?" at the end of the film is an idiot.

Suggesteban Cambiasso (jim), Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:30 (sixteen years ago)

s1ocki, Wednesday, 29 April 2009 22:41 (sixteen years ago)

i dunno, i just don't find her sympathetic, cheats on Peter for a year, leaves him for a famous musician, realises that Aldous will sleep with anything he bumps in to and falls out with him, then decides to try and go back with the dude that she cuckolded. She's a total bitch.

^^^^ yeah

I watched about 1/2 of it the other night but got too tired and couldn't finish it. Will do so this week. Anyway, I sort of really liked what I did see? Diddy was hilarious in it and I didn't want to stab Brand with something sharp like I normally do. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed but since i didn't see the end maybe it all goes to shit after I went to bed.

ENBB, Monday, 4 April 2011 16:10 (fourteen years ago)

haha I'm not saying "WAU WHAT AN AMAZING PORTRAYAL OF A SAD FAN IN FSS" or anything, I am being super nerdy about continuity/consistency

like, Jonah is a pretty distinctive-looking dude so playing two separate ppl in the same universe that both run into Russell Brand's character kind of makes me go "they should have just had his original character give up on his demo, clean up his act and go into A&R"

whelping at his sandpapery best (DJP), Monday, 4 April 2011 16:11 (fourteen years ago)

I flip out so hard over Jonah Hill playing two different people in the same universe. I also don't know why Get Him To The Greek had to have so many anal rape gags or JH as one of the participants in the Apatowverse's inevitable first MMF
