07-08 Chelsea go out of the FA Cup to Championship side Barnsley, with Nigerian international Kayode Odejayi scoring
08-09 Chelsea go out of the Carling Cup to Championship side Burnsley, with Nigerian international Ade Akinbiyi scoring

Odejayi is Akinbiyi's cousin.

darraghmac, Thursday, 13 November 2008 10:30 (seventeen years ago)

LFC were incisive and zippy at times last night, and their support was impressive at times. But their defending was keystone kops stuff, defender crashing into keeper, strikers unmarked in the box, etc ... and I say that as one who has witnessed half a lifetime of such defending at WHL, and Gomes playing in goal like a civil servant or a shop assistant.

LFC really weren't that bad, and they chose to play mostly 2nd-stringers (plus Euro 2008's top scorer, + Alonso sub!), but I still think putting four past them is a rare achievement - when did anyone last do it?

Our men of the match: Dawson, Huddlestone, Campbell - who actually seems to want to *partner* Pavluychenko.

the pinefox, Thursday, 13 November 2008 10:46 (seventeen years ago)

I mean, the strikers seemed to play together, which nobody has done with Bent.

the pinefox, Thursday, 13 November 2008 10:47 (seventeen years ago)

when did anyone last do it?

didn't Metz or someone beat them 5-0 in a pre-season friendly? doesn't really count

otherwise, Arsenal's 6-2 in the Carling Cup in early 2006 i think

Cittaslow Mazza (blueski), Thursday, 13 November 2008 11:01 (seventeen years ago)

Pinefox are you still hating on Bent then, and what would he have to do to change your mind? To be fair, no one has tried to play Bent with a second striker really - he and Pavlyuchenko have combined okay on a couple of occasions when one or the other came on as a sub but mostly it's been one upfront all the way.

I'd like to see Campbell upfront with Bent in the next game, they could combine well because Campbell seems a pretty incisive young player. But nothing that disturbs giving Luca Modric a free role behind the front line.

Chopper Aristotle (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 November 2008 11:13 (seventeen years ago)

(This was mostly a second-string Spurs side as well, albeit a more experienced one. Maybe LFC were playing third-stringers)

Chopper Aristotle (Matt DC), Thursday, 13 November 2008 11:18 (seventeen years ago)

LFC humiliation by a spurs second string team is a better humiliation than Arsenal's plucky kids staging unbelievable upset against premier league giant Wigan.

Thematically it's like a queer-Pipecock (blueski), Thursday, 13 November 2008 11:27 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, Liverpool side last night seemed weaker than the team thumped 6-3 at Anfield by Arsenal in 2006 (a few days after LFC first-XI had also lost 3-1 at home to Arsenal in the FA Cup). But still, I'm not going to split hairs. (Liverpool also beaten 4-1 at home by Chelsea within recent memory; beyond that I'll need to get my scrapbook of Liverpool Echo clippings out for other Kopite reverses of note).

Michael Jones, Thursday, 13 November 2008 11:55 (seventeen years ago)

I'll have to respectfully disagree with Pinefox on a few points-

LFC were incisive and zippy at times last night, and their support was impressive at times.

Short of allowing 'once or twice over 98 mins' as 'at times', I didn't think Liverpool offered anything at all.

defender crashing into keeper happened after Campbell had already beaten both with his first touch, i think.

LFC really weren't that bad- They really were!

Our men of the match: Dawson, Huddlestone, Campbell - who actually seems to want to *partner* Pavluychenko.

Dunno about Dawson- he had a good game, but was it really more worthy of note than Corluka, who wasn't badly at fault for one of the goals?

I think it would be shorter to note the players that didn't have excellent games- Hutton (again), Bale (although good going forward, was terrible at back), Gomes (of course).

Even Zokora did his job last night, FFS!

darraghmac, Thursday, 13 November 2008 12:50 (seventeen years ago)

I completely forgot that this abject humiliation was due to take place until I saw the back page of the Metro this morning, but I would take it over defeat to Spurs in the final every fucking time.

mourinho quote about taking his players off the training pitch springs to mind.

lennon was good tonight, and i have to admit ekotto really looks the part as an attacking left back. he's still a shit defender, though not as bad as dawson, who still isn't good enough to be third choice.

watford were impressive though, well organised, and it didn't look like we could break them down until their captain left the pitch.

Maybe stick him in instead of Berbatov? I've been unimpressed by Berbatov so far. I don't doubt he's got talent, but I'm worried he might be one of those players who looks like the greatest in the world when you win 5-0, but becomes invisible whenever the going gets tough. Mind you, on the rare occasions that Tevez has played this season he's been shite (except tonight, obviously).

I could watch that Crouch backheel over and over.

Keane was comically annoyed when the cross for Crouch's second went past him, and didn't really seem to cheer up any when he realised it was for Crouch and that he'd scored it. I thought he might do his jazz hands rage dance over it.

not really excited about tonight now its going to be full of first team players. It'd be much funnier if we embarrased Liverpool by starting Sanchez Watt instead of Eduardo etc.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 12:13 (sixteen years ago)

that's not fair- rafa can't be expected to compete with wenger's level of spending, or redknapp's, or bruce's, etc etc etc

you can have this tapdance here for free (darraghmac), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 12:26 (sixteen years ago)

Squad innit:

Wojciech Szczesny
Lukasz Fabianski
Philippe Senderos
Kyle Bartley
Mikael Silvestre
Kieran Gibbs
Kerrea Gilbert
Fran Merida
Francis Coquelin
Craig Eastmond
Emmanuel Frimpong
Aaron Ramsey
Mark Randall
Samir Nasri
Eduardo
Gilles Sunu
Nicklas Bendtner
Sanchez Watt

Wenger is to start Eduardo for once, apparently.

Poor 'Chippy' Vela.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:47 (sixteen years ago)

Fabianski will be in pole position.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 18:53 (sixteen years ago)

Craig Eastmond getting his debut. I have no idea who he is and I was sure Coquelin would start instead. I'm thinking it might just be Wenger fucking with people giving another englisher a chance.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 19:39 (sixteen years ago)

"Give a big hand for tonight's mascots, nine-year-old Louisa for Liverpool and eight-year-old Thomas for Arsenal. With special guest star Phil Brown as the Gunnersaurus."

Goal out of nothing from outbox the box, Fabianski blameless.

*outside*, even.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:19 (sixteen years ago)

Gilbert appears to be a homegrown Ebway, passing to players who won't be able to do fuck with the ball once (or if) they get it.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:21 (sixteen years ago)

Pah, Eboue has been pretty good this season.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

The stream I'm watching has some hilarious commentator who blatantly only recognises Dirk Kuyt and so keeps saying "Kuyt" whenever Liverpool get the ball.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

I might keep a "Dirk Kuyt" count.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:24 (sixteen years ago)

that was downright sexy.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:25 (sixteen years ago)

Silvestre looking out of breath.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:29 (sixteen years ago)

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

really? they look ready to fall apart whenever we have the ball. if it wasn't for a shoddy right back, bendtner and silvestre this would be like 5-0 to us already.

fyi vagina (a hoy hoy), Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

Bendtner's obviously staking a claim to play down the middle in future as he blatantly can't kick straight.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 20:41 (sixteen years ago)

Jamie Redknapp telling 21 year old Bendtner that as he is an old man he should be leading by example.

Wenger talking about signing a striker in Jan making himself look a little silly for telling journos how they were all wrong about him needing to sign another striker and talking about all his mad attacking options not so long ago.

I managed to miss the bit where the season was now over for losing a game and RVP got bumped up to five months out. Not looking forward to tonight, I'm worried it's the only thing that will actually motivate Adebayor to remember how to play.

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 16:13 (sixteen years ago)

Sit in the front four rows all around the ground at the Emirates stadium and you get pissed on as well. Think Arsene got a 17 year-old in to design the roof as well.

James Mitchell, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 16:38 (sixteen years ago)

Suedey, I'm thinking that maybe Arsene knows that Uncle Stan will be in charge by the January window, or something. Not that he's bringing any money for players with him, apparently.

mizzell, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:36 (sixteen years ago)

in all honesty, we have held our own and if our passing was a little slicker, we could dominate. and i know this will jinx it but silvestre has been the best player on the pitch for the first game of his arsenal career.

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:38 (sixteen years ago)

Traore's technique is fantastic, lunging mid-fibula,trailing leg augmenting with superb tendon-slicing ankle hits. Wilshere a clogger by comparison.

Nathan, Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:43 (sixteen years ago)

Surprisingly the thing I've thought most is that Arsenal have been trying to take shots when they should have passed to people in better positions...

Wish I could bet on the likeliness of this Arsenal team scoring from a corner.

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 20:45 (sixteen years ago)

Carlos Tevez opens the scoring with a lovely, lovely strike. Rosicky lost possession on the left wing, Tevez got the ball, drifted inside and fired an unstoppable shot past Fabianski and into the top corner. The defending for the Tevez goal was a bit dodgy but the finish was supreme.

It's good that all of Arsenal's young players have learnt the important lesson of how it feels to lose 3-0, soon they'll replicating that sort of form in the first team

The nation's most valiant right back (Suedey 2), Wednesday, 2 December 2009 21:39 (sixteen years ago)

Might be a pointless cup but I think it was more important for the team to win, get back and beat Man City after all the nonsense, and get some momentum going again

Two 3-0s in a row is bad however you look at it, and their results against Man City have been hopeless. This doesnt look like a side that could even threaten to win, I'd wonder more how much good it actually does those players at all

not that we're in the final yet

netbusting hoofed penalties fucking rule

MPx4A, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:50 (sixteen years ago)

This idea that the ref can't give a penalty if the offence starts outside the box, that's not right is it? Caek? Andy Gray was giving it this re Richards' foul on Saha on Saturday, and now Lawro's doing the same about that one ('ref's been conned', no less)

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:51 (sixteen years ago)

dude, blackburn rovers are a shame upon the premier league - you will swat them like a pesky slug that has somehow found its way onto your shoulder

but yeah that first point is what i was getting at

it wasn't a penalty because there was no contact in the box?

Do the english boil pizza? (acoleuthic), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)

my understanding was that the ref can give the penalty if the foul carries on, but I think what they were saying is that the foul had completely stopped by the time Bellamy was in the box

MPx4A, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

xp to ik

MPx4A, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

but yeah, happy to see Vidic-style "your shirt, give it to me" rapist defending like that punished tbh

MPx4A, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:53 (sixteen years ago)

That penalty is beautiful btw.

a hoy hoy, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:54 (sixteen years ago)

^ Yeah, on the replay it was clear that he didn't actually touch Bellamy once they were in the box (Bellamy just fell over as he was trying to cross it), so it shouldn't have been a penalty, but in real time it looked like a penalty.

Home Taping Is Killing Muzak (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

Maybe you're right - but if it's a single foul carrying into the box, doesn't the ref just play advantage until the forward's in the box? Shearer's about to tell us otherwise.

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 20:56 (sixteen years ago)

gotta say it looked like he had another grab at his arm in real-time, but he was, rather, flailing at his own ineptitude, in the dithyramb of a defender beaten

Shearer conspicuously *not* otm about the penalty.

Shearer: "Mike Reilly's saying he's done it twice ... but that's funny, I don't remember him giving a foul for the first one!!11!!"
Dixon: "no, he's saying there were two offences, the penalty's for the second one"
I do wish Dixon weren't so polite

Ismael Klata, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 21:09 (sixteen years ago)

Got to disagree a bit with the BBC's tactical verdict: even though United had the majority of the possession, they weren't creating many chances. This is a familiar story. City had less of the ball but better chances. I'd have said the first half was 50/50, rather than 80/20 in United's favour as they were making out.

Home Taping Is Killing Muzak (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

you penalize the first offence, but if it's a continuous offence that takes place outside and then inside the penalty area, then i'm not sure. i would have assumed you give a foul/penalty based on where it begins. pass.

problem with good feet for a big man is that when we play him, the back four don't see his feet and we turn into liverpool. and he's distressingly bad at timing and jump, challenging in the air and directing a header.

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Friday, 29 January 2010 11:20 (sixteen years ago)

i mean he is bad bad bad at each of those things.

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Friday, 29 January 2010 11:21 (sixteen years ago)

Doyle's been absolutely great, but until Seb remembers where the back of the net is - and he mightn't ever find out at this level - we cd really do with a guy who can score in the Prem alongside him.

with a bad girl's enlightenment and a Buddha's passion (Noodle Vague), Friday, 29 January 2010 11:23 (sixteen years ago)

two big men up front? not sure that's allowed.

genial anarchy (darraghmac), Friday, 29 January 2010 11:28 (sixteen years ago)

Sunderland's whole shtick iirc

For a guy who's supposed to be 5'11" Doyle doesn't really look like a Big Man tho

with a bad girl's enlightenment and a Buddha's passion (Noodle Vague), Friday, 29 January 2010 11:33 (sixteen years ago)

Also Seb kinda plays the Big Man role too except he's 4'6"

the way Alan Green went on (and on) in his R5 pre-match report, Sir Alex Ferguson is going with the youth team rather than resting Rooney and Van Der Sar

you can't be as cumbersome as Richard Dunne without being contractually obliged to have at least one terrible nightmare moment per cup-run

stoke for the shawcross (acoleuthic), Sunday, 28 February 2010 15:16 (sixteen years ago)

Phil Dowd wearing a red shirt underneath his black one?

Diamanti Gallas (aldo), Sunday, 28 February 2010 15:21 (sixteen years ago)

The black one is actually Man Utd's new fourth away change kit.

James Mitchell, Sunday, 28 February 2010 15:30 (sixteen years ago)
