Thanks Wiki!

Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on January 22, 2008. No details have been released aside from the cause of death, listed as "Martin Luther King Day." In early 2008 Ledger was reported to be seeing Gemma Ward after media articles linked the two together at end of 2007 holiday celebrations.[19]

Alfred, Lord Sotosyn, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:00 (eighteen years ago)

@text:UPDATE 1-Actor Heath Ledger found dead in New York
(Adds police comment on possible overdose)
NEW YORK, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Actor Heath Ledger was found dead in his Manhattan apartment on Tuesday, possibly of a drug overdose, New York City police said.
The Australian-born Ledger, 28, who starred in "Brokeback Mountain," was found dead by a housekeeper at his apartment in the trendy SoHo neighborood, police spokesman Paul Browne said.
"We are investigating the possibility of an overdose," Browne said.

t 3:31 p.m., a masseuse arrived at Apartment 5A in the building for an appointment with Mr. Ledger, the police said. The masseuse was let in to the home by a housekeeper, who then knocked on the door of Mr. Ledger’s bedroom. When no one answered, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened the bedroom and found Mr. Ledger unconscious. They shook him, but he did not respond. They immediately called the authorities.

The police said they did not suspect foul play. Officials said pills were found near the body.

Nicole, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 22:20 (eighteen years ago)

No, this isn't de-classing -- guy was young and had a two-year-old daughter and this is a pretty sad outcome.

But so if I remember the gossip correctly, Williams was dating Michael Showalter while making that movie The Baxter, and then in a weird real-life-ification of that movie, she then ditched him for Ledger while making Brokeback Mountain, and then refused to do any publicity for The Baxter, one supposes because she'd ascended to a level where that might look piddling of her. (I watch too much Law & Order and couldn't help amusing myself by imagining the part 10 minutes in where Chris Noth knocks on Showalter's door to ask a few questions.)

You should, Simon. Only good thing about this is that more people will watch it.

Especially when it happens in the US.

For non-Aussies: Australia treats the US like some kind of god, and if one of our own dies there it's suddenly got extra OMGCELEBRITY status attached to it.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:37 (eighteen years ago)

srsly when the US media covers something that happens to an Australian we'll get a HEADLINE story about it. About the fact that it was covered in the US media. I am not making this up.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

Okay no that was tacky. Seriously, though, if you're doing this intentionally, it's not exactly weird that you wouldn't be in the mindset to close and stow the bottle, as opposed to maybe having it in your hand when you pass out.

Maybe he had something wrong with him (e.g. aneurysm) that he thought was a really bad migraine and he'd just managed to open the pill box when his brain gave up.

onimo, Tuesday, 22 January 2008 23:41 (eighteen years ago)

I didn't mean it to be tacky. It's more that reports of tablets strewn around the body sound far more like journalistic posturing than actual reportage.

Sorry, but I don't get this, at all. You seem to assume it's a case of suicide, which obviously can't be left disregarded. But I don't see the problem with someone being nude, ever, really. He's in a private place, alone, why would being nude be a problem? Maybe he was about to go to sleep, maybe he came out of the shower, maybe he just liked being nude.
And if it were suicide, I think he had other things on his mind at the moment he popped the pills than: "Hmmm, yeah, if I do this now they'll find me and I'll be nude oh noes! Big faux pas, must dress up for that."

Not trying to be picky here, but I don't see how this makes a case for "mental instability".
RIP though, he was one of the good ones.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:16 (eighteen years ago)

Look, I really don't know. This is why I'm discussing it.

You're right btw, I shouldn't be assuming suicide at all.

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:20 (eighteen years ago)

Oh, and if it was, purely hypothetically speaking, his choice to 'go' nude: it's the way we came here in the first place, innit?

xp I'm not saying you shouldn't assume suicide. It's plausible. What do we know about him, really? That could be true, I don't know. It's the nudity part you see symptomatic for "mental instability" that I don't understand.

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:22 (eighteen years ago)

Mentioning TMZ makes me sick...but maybe this is the end of it.

TMZ has been contacted by a rep from Heath's family. The cops told the family Heath's death was accidental and there is no evidence to support the buzz that he may have committed suicide.

They are particularly distraught over media reports that he may have taken his own life. The family says he was not that kind of person.

As we just reported, Heath was ill with pneumonia when he died.

MRZBW, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:23 (eighteen years ago)

danbunny, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:25 (eighteen years ago)

Autumn Almanac, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:27 (eighteen years ago)

OT: I hadn't even heard of TMZ before tonight (being from the Netherlands). When seeing their updates reaching hundreds of comments within minutes I thought that must be the place 'to be' for alot of people. But when I clicked, dozen people simply entered "first!"... *sighs*

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:30 (eighteen years ago)

Spreading gossip makes me sad(again)...

“Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night,” he said. “I couldn’t stop thinking. My body was exhausted, and my mind was still going.” One night he took an Ambien, which failed to work. He took a second one and fell into a stupor, only to wake up an hour later, his mind still racing.

from perez.. that was two months ago.

and like so many others upthread.. this death has really hit me.

:/

MRZBW, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:39 (eighteen years ago)

NYT obit finishes on this note:

He responded to a question about how having a child had changed his life:

“You’re forced into, kind of, respecting yourself more,” he said. “You learn more about yourself through your child, I guess. I think you also look at death differently. It’s like a Catch-22: I feel good about dying now because I feel like I’m alive in her, you know, but at the same hand, you don’t want to die because you want to be around for the rest of her life.”

this is sad, i guess it's pointing to accidental overdose. he struck me as someone who took themselves a bit too seriously. someone i work with met him at some big hollywood event and he bummed a cig off of him, then my colleague's date asked him some harmless, if dorky, question about whether heath knew of any cool parties afterwards and he just looked at her with disgust and stormed off.

gershy, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 03:58 (eighteen years ago)

yeah but... a movie star dies in new york and somehow the whole international information apparatus is going to keep it quiet until official word gets to people on the other side of the planet? just not going to happen. v. sorry for his family though.

in all seriousness whether you found ledger excellent, inoffensive, or otherwise, the idea that a 28-year old father can just wind up dead on a monday night from taking the wrong medicine for pneumonia is never a good thing to be reminded of. alex in nyc's post is probably the saddest thing

I was about to quote it earlier. The accidental part of this makes it even worse. If the guy was depressed and found a way out then... that's it. His choice! An accidental OD because of pneumonia/stress/etc is just fucking sad.

Most people will probably discuss Brokeback Mountain and I'm Not There over the next couple days, but, for me, 10 Things I Hate About You means a lot more...If you had asked me to come up with a top ten list circa 2000, this, along with several other classics of my youth (see Clueless, Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead), would have fit somewhere.

The scene above seemed perfect at the time; i wanted to be that cool rebel character. Heath grew as an actor, yeah, but i think he had it from the start.

he was pretty stunning in brokeback. i had a genuine fondness for him and really wanted the dude to succeed. sadly, the noise on this will get intolerable by the time The Dark Knight premieres. gonna go get drinks and try not to think about this for the rest of the night.

REST IN PEACE KEITH LEDGER
when i first saw this young man in a knight's table, i knew we were witnessing a star being born, a glorious luminous cinematic powerhouse. my suspicions were confirmed with his powerful role in ten things i love about you which i caught on television. this fellow had "IT"~! with his masterful command of the silver screen, i was sure that we were witnessing a new jack nicklaus or even still a young orson wellesley.
then, of course, who could forget brokenback mountains? that movie, i am not afraid to admit, moved me to tears. his role as a transgendered prostitute who was brutally murdered by homophobic young men who discovered his secret truly earned his oscar, and more. with good reason, he became the lynchpin of the gay rights movement.
now, fans of mr. ledger have only one reason to live: this summer's blockbuster in waiting THE DARK NIGHT TURNING. in this indie flick, keith plays a clown with a heart of gold.
This young Tyro of stage and screen was in talks with Gilles "Lucky" Del Mar to begin production on "I Wish I Knew How To Be Sad." But now... now I wish I didn't know how to be sad.
as keith once famously said in the movie where he is a bronco busting hellion, "i wish i knew how to quit this tortured plane."
well keith, i guess you did know after all. and like all movie fans, i am left with a tear in my eye, wishing that you didn't.

rest in peace keith alan ledger 1976-2008

He's not the first movie star to die at a young age and certainly not the last but I still can't help but think aw hell, why him and not someone else who's really hell-bent on self-destruction.

An autopsy of the actor Heath Ledger was performed on Wednesday morning, but the results are inconclusive, according to Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for New York City’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Charles S. Hirsch.

Additional blood and tissue testing needs to be performed before the manner and cause of death can be determined, Ms. Borakove said in a phone interview, estimating that the process could take 10 days to two weeks. “If you have no apparent cause, you have to do further testing,” she said.

No cause of death has been ruled out, she added.

Ledger's death prompted the White House to postpone an event to promote an advertising campaign aimed at preventing prescription drug abuse.

President Bush had been scheduled today to make a statement in the Roosevelt Room on the Office of National Drug Control Policy's television advertisement about preventing prescription drug abuse.

But White House press secretary Dana Perino said it would be put off.

"We thought it would be better to postpone the event rather than run the risk of anyone thinking that we were being opportunistic in highlighting the issue," she said.

Dan Bova of Larchmont, New York
Once when I was driving in Brooklyn, I got a flat tire. As I was jacking up my car, this deep voice from behind me said, "Need a hand?" It was Heath Ledger. I couldn't believe it. He helped jack up my car and change the tire. He was really good with tools!

darraghmac, Wednesday, 23 January 2008 21:42 (eighteen years ago)

lol reread Dan's comment.

Dana Stevens' obit, concentrating on Ledger's talent for moving in character. On Lords of Dogtown:

"This scruffy, inspirational sports picture, a fictionalized remake of the skateboarding documentary Dogtown and Z-Boys, can barely contain Ledger's gonzo performance. He's fresh from Val Kilmer College, comically unhinged and unprecedentedly ugly. Late in the movie, after the Z-Boys skate their way to juicy endorsement deals and desert Skip one by one, he hurls surfboards off the roof of his store in a self-destructive rage, then sprawls on the roof's edge, guzzling from a bottle of whiskey while the crowd below gasps for fear he'll throw himself off. Hard to watch on the night he presumably died of an overdose? A little bit."

Heath Ledger obsessed with Nick Drake...directed eerie video for 'Black Dog'
MTV News | Read Full Story >

“I was obsessed with his story and his music and I pursued it for a while and still have hopes to kind of tell his story one day,” a soft-spoken and fidgety Ledger told the assembled media, though he also said that any such aspirations had “faded away.”

But in an eerie postscript to the actor’s own death on Tuesday, MTV News has learned that Ledger recently shot and edited a music video for a Drake song called “Black Dog,” so titled because of a Winston Churchill quote describing depression as such. It is also reportedly the last song Drake recorded before overdosing on antidepression medication in 1974 at the age of 26.

A representative for Drake’s estate described the “gorgeous” and “extremely moving” clip as a stark black-and-white composition, consisting mainly of the director turning the camera on himself. In the end, Ledger is seen drowning himself in a bathtub.

Nicole, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:07 (eighteen years ago)

Speaking of classy statements, here's Jack:

When asked by the London crowds for his reaction to Ledger's untimely demise, a defeated Nicholson simply replied, "I told him so."

Simon H., Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:17 (eighteen years ago)

Mel had already issued a statement of sadness and regret and etc. I was actually thinking, "Charlie Gibson? Why?"

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 24 January 2008 15:18 (eighteen years ago)

It's been noted here that the Westboro Baptist Church is announcing that they'll picket his funeral, right?

from their website:

Yes. WBC will picket this pervert’s funeral, in religious protest and warning: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked.” Gal. 6:7. Heath Ledger thought it was great fun defying God Almighty and His plain word; to wit: God Hates Fags! & Fag-Enablers! Ergo, God hates the sordid, tacky bucket of slime seasoned with vomit known as ‘Brokeback Mountain’ - and He hates all persons having anything whatsoever to do with it.

Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there - beside which, nothing else about Heath Ledger is relevant or consequential.

Abbott, Friday, 25 January 2008 01:56 (eighteen years ago)

Okay, criticizing Jessica Simpson's build is the moment where the whole critical standpoint and suspension-of-disbelief that comes with talking about celebrities evaporates and I'm like wait, god's sake, who among us is seriously in a position to act superior about Jessica Simpson's body

nabisco, Friday, 25 January 2008 02:11 (eighteen years ago)

there's no stronger position to hold in terms of "you'll never have to truly follow through on this" than the internet nerd claiming that he would never sleep with (insert ridiculously plastic-hot celebrity female).

omar little, Friday, 25 January 2008 02:15 (eighteen years ago)

P.S. I learned today that

(a) Heath was named Heathcliff after the one in Wuthering Heights, which is weird enough in that said Heathcliff was a wretched bastard who lost a chick and spent the entire rest of his life making everyone within a 10-mile radius as miserable as possible over the whole thing, including children who weren't even born when it happened

(b) HIS SISTER WAS NAMED CATHERINE, after Heathcliff's adoptive sister / love interest in Wuthering Heights

This is the worst and most jacked-up naming system I have ever heard of in my life, with the weird incestuous dollop just topping the guy who named his sons "Winner" and "Loser"

nabisco, Friday, 25 January 2008 02:16 (eighteen years ago)

Also I'll happily believe anyone who says Simpson is just not to their tastes, but if you're going to start saying there's something dramatically wrong with her build, you are basically suggesting that the rest of us are in fact monsters

stevienixed, Sunday, 27 January 2008 20:13 (eighteen years ago)

I think the reason that so many are affected is because it is NORMAL. For the past 30 years, human nature has been purposefully distorted by the PTB. Whether it's our media, video games brainwashing kids to be apathetic about violence and death, or our schools, the US has been dumbed down to a herd of sheep. Those of us who attempt to shine a light on the lies are harrassed, terrorized, even arrested. There is a war on free thinking, and us free-thinkers have a natural tendency for sympathy, truth and justice. We haven't had much of that in the case of Ledger. IMO, Ledger was murdered. Sacrificed.
Since Op Paperclip, our evil is now spinning out of control. To go further, I'd bet that Britney gets it too, just like Anna Nicole. She sure is being set up for a fall. Anna Nicole's teenage son was set to inherit too, until he died mysteriously shortly before her. How convenient...in the Bahamas and that Mr. Stern MARRIED Anna Nicole just 3 months before she died. And why wasn't Stern prosecuted for lying in court about being the father? I say Heath was murdered and there will be more to come. The media will do it's best to brainwash us with red herrings like Fox's John Gibson's insane statements he made. It's so ironic that we've had neocon "civil rights groups" like the ADL and B'nai B'rith, vehemently trying to pass "hate laws" in this country, and yet they are the most racist and hate mongering of all! They constantly berate all Gentiles, Arabs, muslims, Christians, etc. They murder and torture women and children and show no remorse. They steal millions, flee to Israel and Israel refuses to extradite.
Do you think a US liberal in the media or politics would be able to get away with calling blacks in this country "cockroaches"? Imus anyone? (www.talmudunmasked.com , www.nogw.com)
People need to trust their own instincts. Human nature and intuition are natural and don't let the media taint your god given abilities.

Michael White, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:16 (eighteen years ago)

Just the fact that he was on such an assortment of drugs makes a kind of tenuous, circumstancial case for suicide. Dump contents of one bottle in mouth, move on to next bottle.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:35 (eighteen years ago)

Other reports have his father saying that no individual drug was found in overdose concentrations, making the "dump contents of bottle in mouth" scenario less likely.

Ledger's father Kim said: "While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy."

Alba, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:39 (eighteen years ago)

"doctor-prescribed drugs"

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:45 (eighteen years ago)

What is bullshit is that Ledger's dad's bullshit statement will have people scared to drink chamomile tea while on Advil. You don't overdose and die taking one each of the drugs mentioned in the report.

wanko ergo sum, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:48 (eighteen years ago)

yeah and recreational abuse of these things makes them harder to get for legit painkiller purposes. (i have a friend with a chronic pain condition who was subjected to humiliating interrogation by a pain doctor recently; guy treated her like she was just another lying junkie.) being honest about how and why someone died would at least keep the lines a little clearer.

tipsy mothra, Wednesday, 6 February 2008 23:53 (eighteen years ago)

You don't overdose and die taking one each of the drugs mentioned in the report.

Not sure if Constantine belongs with the other two you mentioned, Tuomas, that's all.

Millsner, Monday, 23 February 2009 11:44 (seventeen years ago)

Constantine was one of the best comic book adaptations of the last few years, have you actually seen it? I expected it to be mostly shit, but was quite positively surprised. Okay, it has Keanu, but it's also really moody and character-driven (instead of effects-driven like Hellboy), and there's fab performances by Tilda Swinton and Peter Stormare.

Tuomas, Monday, 23 February 2009 11:48 (seventeen years ago)

i thought the dark knight was pretty fab

Yeah, I've seen it! I'm really just nitpicking the fact that, while BR and Spidey 2 are almost universally well-regarded, I doubt that will ever be the case for Constantine. It does have a great cast, granted.

Millsner, Monday, 23 February 2009 11:51 (seventeen years ago)
