The impulse is to say Italy losing to France in the final of Euro 2000, Del Piero missing an estimated 74 chances to kill the game off, Wiltord scoring with the last kick of the game, and then fucking Trezeguet, of all people, scoring the winner in extra time. Set us back six years, that result did.

Being a supporter of 'Cups for cock-ups' Manchester City, there are plenty to choose from. The obvious one is the relegation to the third tier in 1998. I was miles away on a beach in Brazil listening to the World Service, and proceeded to get blind drunk to try and pretend it wasn't really happening. the reality only really sank in when I went to my next home game, a 1-1 draw with Chesterfield. Grim.
England going out of the World Cup is always a desolate moment as well, as it only comes around once every four years.

as far as Old Word sports go:
Cov being relegated at Villa Park of all places, losing after being 2-0 up at the half.
losing on pens vs Germany in the Euro 96 semis, mostly because after that Holland game i'd let down my protective shield of cynicism and had started to Believe. Uri Geller, why did you powers abandon us?!
biggest disappointment in rugby may actually have been tihs past weekend's collapse against Wales. maybe i'm just feeling that most keenly because it's so recent.
i'm inured to failure by the England cricket team so that has never been crushing, and tho i keep up with the results for Warwks but i'm not all that vested in them.

Chelsea relegated via play-offs in 88, with pitch invasion to add to the shame. Only top flight side to ever get relegated via play-offs!
Also, losing FA Cup quarter-final replay to Sunderland 2-1 in last minute in 92. Was convinced that was the best chance i'd ever get to see Chelsea in a final.

England's exit in Germany was well rough, altho by the time Henry scored against Brazil I did feel a bit better. All in all the shootout defeats in '96 and '98 felt worse to me (but I had been even more naive/delusional about success then). At the time England's last game at Old Wembley was horrible too (but eventually made up for). National team-based answers seem quite boring tho.

Going out of Euro 96 as a result of the England v Holland thing was probably harder than watching us getting beat off England. Well, it stopped "getting beat off England" being the biggest disaster of that tournament.
― ailsa, Thursday, 7 February 2008 14:09 (seventeen years ago)
Dom, I saw NTFC get beat 1-0 by a late goal against Grimsby at Wembley in a Div 2 paloff final in 1998(?). as an honorary Cobbler it was a try experience in a number of different ways. i als saw them get knocked out of the LDV Vans at Turf Moor. heady times, those. difficult, but not quite the hardest results to get over.

Becker 2-6 7-6 6-4 7-6 Agassi (from 2-6 1-4), 1995 Wimb sf was pretty sickening. Untrammelled genius demolition of the Leimen Lech for an hour then it all started to unravel.
Man City 3-1 Everton, FAC r6 replay, March '81 upset me hugely. We'd beaten Arsenal, Liverpool and Southampton and I actually thought we were going to win it. Paul Power lobbed a comically out-of-position Jim McDonagh for City's late equaliser at Goodison on the Saturday and then we capitulated to three quick goals in the second half at Maine Road. On the way home from the first game, I remember hearing Gordon Lee on the radio just before we went into the Wallasey tunnel: "Three drawn cup-ties today - I doubt the replays will all go the way of the home team." Way to go, Gordon - banking on the law of averages to keep us in the Cup and, oh, he was wrong anyway.
This season's Goodison derby was the angriest I've been after a game in a long time.

Milan last year was hard enough. Still wish they could have won the CL again, would have been amazing.
Not so much a result, but I do often think of the year Liverpool were 5 points clear at Christmas under Roy Evans. They looked good enough to win the league.
As for an actual game that stands out as upsetting and infuriating, the time when Chelsea came from 2-0 down to beat us 4-2 in the FA Cup was particularly bad.
I forget what age I was, possibly too old to have football posters on my wall, but I ripped them down in fury when Zola got the third or fourth goal, one of those amazing curled shots he used to do.
x-post just remember internationals, that's a whole other can of worms.

England's narrow exits from major tournaments in 86, 90, 96, 98, 04 and 06 were all pretty hard to take, but I think 86 and 96 really stick out, 1996 because for the only time ever in my life we *really* looked like we were going to win something and the whole mood of the country was fantastic for about 10 sunny days and then it was all ripped away by the Germans again *on my bloody birthday*, 1986 just for the burning sense of injustice following the most blatant and iconic bit of cheating ever.
In terms of Man Utd it has to be the inglorious fuck up of April 1992. At the start of the month United were top of the table, one point clear of Leeds and with two games in hand, and finally heading for their first title in 25 years. But at the crucial stage there was a fixture pile-up (four games in less than a week; five games in 11 days) and they managed to draw at Luton (who were about to get relegated) on the Saturday, lose at home to Forest (who got relegated the next year) on the Monday, lose at West Ham (who also got relegated) on the Wednesday, and then head to Anfield on the Sunday, knowing that Leeds had already beaten Sheff Utd with some freakish own goals in the early kick-off, to see Liverpool win 2-0, with Ian Rush finally scoring against United and tens of thousands of Scousers gloating that United would *never* win the league. I was shellshocked all summer after that.
― Nasty, Brutish & Short, Thursday, 7 February 2008 15:51 (seventeen years ago)
Heheh LOL Ken's comment about Brazilian dancers + contact sport.
Belgium + 2 of the 3 Rs would be interesting. Maybe it's something that could be explored next time around.
What was interesting about the 2002 World Cup was that Brazilian fans were worried that Scolari would play dull pragmatic football, cf Parreira's 1994 team, but that simply didn't materialise. Call it non-contact sport if you like, Tom, but I loved it.

France were very good vs Spain and Brazil.
Euro 2000 final was fantastic - house full of people, all but one rooting for France. Wiltord and Trezeguet goals greeted like Portillo '97 x 2.

i think most Boston sports fans would've made a deal with the devil if it was winning a 4th super bowl against los gigantes versus beating the evil empire in spectacular fashion and going on to break the curse.

ALCS 2003--luckily it only lasted a year!

Whenever I see replays of Gazza failing to connect with that cross against germany in 1996, nor Anderton's shot hitting the post and bouncing straight to Cupcake, I get a phycial wince of pain. I'm almost over that feeling now with 1990, mainly because they rarely show Chris Waddle hitting the post and it bouncing in the only place that neither him not Lineker could knock the rebound in.
― The Boyler, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:56 (seventeen years ago)
Well, a bit harsh on France guys ! we beat spain 3-1 (one of the best teams that set on fire the pool games), we beat brazil 1-0 (favourite of the WC although they were burnt out) we beat portugal 1-0 (also an amazing team but we were a bit lucky there...) ... pretty good teams, I say...
― AleXTC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 16:57 (seventeen years ago)
adn we were better during the final. at least the second half and extra time.

I am a Celtic supporter so basically yeah, all the things Celtic supporters have already said.
Also remember being at school the day that/the day after (can't remember when the game was played) Henrik broke his leg against Lyon. Real somber mood all throughout the school and one or two girls crying.
I only really casually support Scotland (thank fuck really) so no heartache there for me.
― jim, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)
You still weren't as good as Italy (xxxp)
portugal ... an amazing team
... yes indeed, amazing that a team with a goalkeeper and ten midfield players got as far they did
― Tom D., Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:01 (seventeen years ago)

ugh hell yes. i suppose this is worse than england not even having near misses like this against portugal in '06, which was just a horrible experience from start to end (both the game and the pubs i watched it in).
― blueski, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:05 (seventeen years ago)
was he all bitchy after the game or something?
He's still bitching about it whenever he subs for Jim Rome.

xp: Germany and Argentina were both better teams than Italy, too, but it's a cup competition and Italy won when it mattered
― Nasty, Brutish & Short, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)
well, pauleta isn't exactly bad at scoring goals ! (even with PSG, which says a lot about his skills !) about France, there were teams that were better, more impressive, more fun to watch, etc during the WC but Italy wasn't one of them...
― AleXTC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:07 (seventeen years ago)
ah ok
i don't bitch about it now and rarely bitched at the time. i was always trying to tell anyone w/in earshot "hey we really blew the game by doing X", which didn't make it any harder to swallow.
― J0rdan S., Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
Argentina and spain were the most impressive teams of the WC... but as Nasty said, that's not what matters in a cup competition... Italy and France are very similar teams actually. Italy had that little something that made them win but I wouldn't say they were better than France.
― AleXTC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:09 (seventeen years ago)
well, pauleta isn't exactly bad at scoring goals !
Pauleta isn't exactly good at scoring against good teams in big touranments, is he?
about France, there were teams that were better, more impressive, more fun to watch, etc during the WC but Italy wasn't one of them...
What's fun got to do with it? Listen, I'm a neutral and Italy were better and more impressive than France by light years
― Tom D., Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:11 (seventeen years ago)
Well, since football is a sport but mainly a show now so fun in important, at least to me ! (some may say all the little tricks ronaldinho, c.ronaldo etc do is useless but I find it really entertaining, for instance). as for Italy and France, "let's agree to disagree" !
― AleXTC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:15 (seventeen years ago)
Indeed, but here's hoping Scotland get France and not Italy in future qualifying tournaments!
― Tom D., Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
Portugal were shite. Smart if cynical tactical approach against England in the QF but that's it.
I think Italy and Germany were totally matched in terms of quality, but with Germany better attacking and Italy better defending quelle surprise. France were actually very good beyond the group stage I thought, punching above their weight/greater than the sum of their parts as it were.
― blueski, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:16 (seventeen years ago)
The parts were pretty damn good to be fair.
― Matt DC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)
As for Pauleta, 47 goals in 88 games and all time best scorer for portugal, a team that went to semifinal in euro00, final in euro02 and semifinal in WC06... not too bad...
― AleXTC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)
I put a bet on Portugal to win this Summer but I think they'll get beaten by either Germany or Croatia in the QF.
Obviously this means they will now beat Poland 4-0.
― blueski, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:22 (seventeen years ago)
I mean I put the bet on ages ago, before the group draws.

One last thing about Italy : don't misunderstand me, I really like that team and find it good. Actually, I think they are better than France NOW... but that's mainly because our coach has a very interesting strategy consisting of not taking/using the best way the best players we have !
for euro08, except France, but that's the heart speaking, I think it will be either Italy, Portugal or Spain (and I hope it will be Portugal).
― AleXTC, Thursday, 7 February 2008 17:25 (seventeen years ago)
I'm backing Poland, if only because it'd be funny.

<i>I hate Brazil winning anyway whatever the occasion<i? <i>care to elaborate<i/>
2 things.. 1)the team never seems really good, just relying on the brilliance of, say, 3 players.
(and also, I know it's a paradox) 2)the fact that Brazil could probably send 16 teams to the world cup and still "up" the level.

The Toronto Blue Jays provided two that were awful. In the '85 ALCS, they had a 3-1 lead on the Royals, all set for their first World Series; they ended up losing the seventh game on a wind-aided home run by Jim Sundberg. (Seriously--it looked like a shallow fly to right off the bat.) Then '87, when they went up on the Tigers by three-and-a-half with a week to go; they lost the last seven games of the season, all seven by one run, the last three in Detroit. It was Twilight Zone stuff. The '92-93 back-to-backs erased most of that trauma from memory, but not entirely; Toronto fans felt we had the best team in baseball in both '85 and '87. (There was some Twilight Zone stuff in '83, too, the first year they ever contended.)

No no, the scarcity value makes these the only things worth devastation over surely? Clubs get another chance before you know it these days.
Scotland 0-0 Uruguay to go out of the 1986 World Cup. Because everything was set up for qualification - manageable defeats to Denmark and Germany, easy 16-out-of-24 progression scenario, Uruguay being crap, joke early red card - yet they produced nothing, weren't even up to going out with a whimper. Plus being young, you kind of get hopeful about these things.
By rights Scotland 0-3 Morocco in 1998 should have been worse - similar qualification odds, the illusion of momentum, utterly shit performance to the point of humiliation, babyish red card, realisation that never again can victory over an African side be expected, and that Scotland probably never ever going to play a single knock-out game of football now, desolate personal circumstances in being in a bar abroad and the only person who gave a toss about the boring game on the tiny screen - but the lols at Morocco's celebrations turning to shit when they found out about Norway's unlikeliest comeback v Brazil made up for it somehow.
