Will the ending be the same as the original Piranha? Because, if I'm remembering correctly, they were all, "let's POLLUTE THE KILLER FISH TO DEATH!!!" So awesome.

or remake or something else?

Hillary had Everest in his veins (sunny successor), Monday, 7 September 2009 03:17 (sixteen years ago)

It's a remake of Piranha done in 3-D, and unlike the original & sequel which are campy low-budget comically bad affairs apparently this director is actually trying to make this frightening.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 7 September 2009 03:20 (sixteen years ago)

Rest assured man that if this was Piranha 2 in 3-D I would have traveled forward in time to see it by now

Lance Henrikson is staying at my hotel btw and he was endlessly pleased when I told him I loved him in Piranha 2.

i might be convinced to see this movie if someone overdubs the audio track to add "omg they fly @ u face" everytime they appear

plate of dinosaurs (San Te), Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

I saw the trailer for this at the theater the other day and it got to the moment of musical score crescendo right before it all dramatically cuts to silence and the title comes on screen all ominously the announcer goes PIRAHNA 3D and I had to fight so hard not to yell THEY FLY @ U FACE

zorn_bond.mp3, Sunday, 15 August 2010 18:51 (fifteen years ago)

Was this the movie they were playing in Muppets Take Manhattan?

Mordy, Sunday, 15 August 2010 18:54 (fifteen years ago)

That leaked nine-minutes of footage from Comic Con showed, between the wet t-shirt contest stuff and lame "lookout, piranhas!" suspense, a scene with a topless chick sliced in half (between her exposed breasts, natch), the top half sliding into the water off the bottom half, as well as a piranha spitting out a dismembered, er, member. This will be exploitation trash, with any stupid fun undermined by a big budget and slick effects. Once again.

Saw trailers for this on TV last week. I had forgotten "THEY FLY @ U FACE", sadly, otherwise it might have looked more fun, instead it looked just dumb. It took them 2 years to make this?

mc banhammer (Pashmina), Thursday, 19 August 2010 23:48 (fifteen years ago)

a little over two hours until movie time and my bro hasn't chosen a theatre. THIS is why I go to movies alone!

michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Friday, 20 August 2010 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

I am watching the credits roll right now. o_O. This was way different than I expected. Oh the camp and intentional LOLS are all over the place...but this has almost Grand Guignol-esque levels of gore. There's a half hour that is actually jarring in its gore and terror yet the movie interchanges between humor and horror without transition. Its a trashy film. And I liked it but I actually feel simultaneously entertained, grossed out, and discomforted. Just...wtf

michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Friday, 20 August 2010 05:48 (fifteen years ago)

i mean the fish look ridiculously corny but my lord is there an incongruity between that and some of the grisly deaths. some of the tone in the middle echoes the grimness of Sleepaway Camp. and then 2 minutes later you're laughing again!

michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Friday, 20 August 2010 06:24 (fifteen years ago)

lord goo goo (latebloomer), Friday, 20 August 2010 08:16 (fifteen years ago)

surprised at the early critical love that's now surfacing this morning, even if at this point it's still mostly internet websites...often times trashy films like this are more offputting to mainstream critics. I tend to agree with what most of the critics have had to say thus far. I expect when some of the big hitters come out for it to be more mixed.

someone left the theatre talking about how much dumber he was last night after seeing it but I don't think it's a "dumb" movie -- the filmmakers know how to manipulate the audience for certain. Shallow, maybe, but not dumb.

michangelo wuz a party d00d (San Te), Friday, 20 August 2010 14:18 (fifteen years ago)

this thread title is fucking killing me

travis markers (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 20 August 2010 14:19 (fifteen years ago)

I think because most mainstream critics are smart enough to know they difference between a "dumb/trashy movie" that's a reverant take on being raised on Troma and Raimi and grindhouse and like "dumb/trashy movie" that's like "FISH MOVIE: WATCH A TITTY GET BIT YOW"

travis markers (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 20 August 2010 14:22 (fifteen years ago)

There's a half hour that is actually jarring in its gore and terror yet the movie interchanges between humor and horror without transition.

Exactly this.

It was all fun and games and fish nibblin' dicks and then somewhere at like the 75 minute mark it turned into Pier Paolo Pasolini goes to Spring Break.

da croupier, Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:37 (fifteen years ago)

Snakes On A Plane, MacGruber, A-Team, Scott Pilgrim...America apparently won't see a movie that doesn't take itself seriously unless it's actually named Vampires Suck.

da croupier, Sunday, 22 August 2010 18:38 (fifteen years ago)

wow, i'm stunned at Vampires Suck doing that well, I mean I thought those half-baked cookie cutter spoofs were starting to sour. I guess not.

and right now my best friend is trolling me in saying that it looks like it's a better movie than Piranha 3-D :/. I mean it's not like P 3-D is Gunga Din but I'd wager Ishtar is a better movie than Vampires Suck.

ya but some of those were actually funny - I've seen some of these filmmakers movies, and they aren't even good at what they're supposed to do -- cheap spoofy laughs

the master of unlocking (San Te), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:05 (fifteen years ago)

yeah. those films were getting progressively worse, but there were still gags. epic movie's finale involves the chronicles of narnia-based group of heroes coming up against an orc army, and pulling out the remote from click (which comes from nowhere), hitting pause, and beating them up. or in meet the spartans, the 'leave britney alone' guy comes up on the screen of the persian transformer's guy screen. there aren't jokes, they're just references, like sub-sub-sub-family guy at its worst.

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Monday, 23 August 2010 17:16 (fifteen years ago)

I dunno, I def agree with you, but I remember in like Naked Gun 3, the bomb blew their hair back and they just started laughing like Beavis & Butt-Head and that is exactly the same non-joke referencey BS. Though I bet that this crap has like exponentially MORE of that shit then they did in the 90s

THEY FLY @ U FACE...AGAIN:

Dimension Films has put toothy fish back on the menu. The company has announced a sequel to Piranha 3D, after the film grossed $10 million in its opening weekend.

i know it only cost around 25 million, but does it really warrant a sequel?

in fairness the ending left me with the feeling that there were more stories to be told about these characters.

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Monday, 23 August 2010 21:57 (fifteen years ago)

although judging by the ending I'm not sure that the additional stories would last more than 10 minutes!

the master of unlocking (San Te), Monday, 23 August 2010 22:02 (fifteen years ago)

It's a remake of Piranha done in 3-D, and unlike the original & sequel which are campy low-budget comically bad affairs apparently this director is actually trying to make this frightening.

i watched this movie and as it turns out THEY FLY @ U FACE plus make you all hamburgery (and fall-aparty and eye-losey and gross), but it also basically sucks. a movie of basically 4 parts:

1) chaste teen romance
2) tuff mom-sherrif family rescue
3) boobs pussy ass boobs
4) THEY FLY @ U FACE

first two components seemed disconnected and underdeveloped, third wildly overstated, to the point where i felt like i was actually watching a racy/sleazy spring break special for like a third of the film's running time. there is of course wall to wall face flying, dick chomping, meat mangling fish gore action, and that's all to the good, but the movie underneath is worthless and cruddy on almost every other level. it delivers no good dialogue or compelling characters and very few actual laughs or scares. i get that it's meant to be cruddy & trashy in an 80s-throwback, cheezeball kinda way, and i was moderately entertained on that level, but "it's supposed to be terrible, don't you see?!?" is such a lazy excuse for uninspired filmmaking. made me pine for the likes of planet terror, which at least enlivened its retro trashmovie approach with some wit, ambition and cinematic inventiveness.

also weird the way the film seems to condemn hormone-addled yahoos and slutty bimbos, as well as the pornographers who cater to and exploit them, yet relentlessly panders to the former with a leering, boring pornographer's eye. sometimes i enjoy the tension that this kind of hypocrisy can generate (as in robocop, which absolutely wallows in the bloodthirsty, lowbrow culture it also seems to condemn), but there's no indication of self-awareness here, no animating intelligence to give the discontinuity ironic/satiric bite. piranha 3D ultimately reveals itself as a timid, conservative, family-centered adventure movie. one that just happens to be tarted up in acres of silicone and latex. on that level, it just doesn't make sense. the people to whom the tits, gore and black humor might appeal to are gonna be bummed out by the goody-goody, family-first themes and storyline. and the audience that might wanna see a rousing adventure movie wherein elizabeth shue heroically rescues her kids from harm would choke on the sleaze.

a dystopian society awaits if we continue on this path. (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 01:14 (fifteen years ago)

forget university (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 01:21 (fifteen years ago)

liked the kid. cheezed out by the movie's final act and basic p.o.v. now, being cheezed out isn't a bad thing (watched night of the hunter last night and love it do death, despite [because of?] the WILDLY cheezy, homily-laden conclusion), but i just got bored. kids were cute as hell, especially the little brother and sister, but i was never worried they were gonna get hurt. and i wasn't invested in elizabeth shue's rescue mission, or even pixie boy's attempt to rescue curly-haired nice girl. "girls gone wild" style T&A got boring and even gross after a while. i enjoyed the gore, but that's about it.

doubtless because i lack one (1) soul.

a dystopian society awaits if we continue on this path. (contenderizer), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

well, yeah.

i was sayin, this movie is trying to cut a wide swath of ppl that want to see a bunch of jock whiteboys nibbled to death by tiny fishies. I think most of us in that demo love our moms and siblings and girlfriends.

Otherwise this would be st8 trenchcoat mafia shit.

This kind of self-aware, 'supposed to be terrible' ethos can be argued either way, but I think this one pulls it off to a reasonable degree. It's definitely revelling in its own trashiness, and you can argue that it's trying to have its cake and eat it too, but the naked swimming tittay 3D action is SO over the top that I don't think they're going straight up for Harry Knowles in a tube sock titillation. A lot of the 80s slasher films were very conservative (the promiscuous and the drunken get brutally punished), and I think it intentionally plays up on those aspects. As an audience, we watch the debauchery and expect them to be slaughtered. What I think is interesting is the way in which that slaughter is delivered. Structurally these things should have a few deaths while the heroes figure out what's going on, then a scene of mayhem, then a tense finale and a resolution. The 'tense finale' is happening simultaneously with the mayhem, and the final heroic/resolution is so tossed off and perfunctory I don't think anyone cared about it. The extended lakeside attack scene is basically the climax, and there's no resolution other than 'most of them died, but while they were dying, a few got to the beach'. Aside from Rhames with the propellor, we basically just watched gruesome death after gruesome death, which was so relentless it ventured into depressing territory in a 'you wanted it so how do you like it?!?!' way. If it wasn't for the 3D, which made the underwater shots and the fast cutting blurry and disorientating, I think that bit would have become too much after a few minutes. But it just kept going.

I don't think it's a great film, but I think it's totally honest in what it is and wants to deliver on that. There is absolutely no concern for character development or arcs (save the standard awkward teen saves girl), and there's never really any intention to.

xpost yea, the way the movie really generated its sympathy for the characters was just by making their deaths extra brutal, skipped right over the characterization. as much as I love watching fratboys get munched, by the end I was more reviled by it!

agree 100%. wish the movie had been structured in such a way as to indicate that the filmmakers understood (or at least had faith in) this. no need for the cops characters. at heart, it's about dickheads who act like morons and then get hideously mangled. attempt to simultaneously tell a completely different story kind of killed it for me.

i dunno, though. i often react badly to stuff like this on the first pass (hated planet terror at first, but i've now seen it four times and love it). when i see it again, and i will, i'll be better prepared for zero story, zero scares, a few cheap laughs and tons of sleazy, grisly trash for its own sake.

disagree though that the movie isn't at least half serious in its relentless pussy-ass-boob merchandising. it may play at being wink-winky on some level, but it nonetheless fills the screen at almost every moment with wall-to-wall nude maxim girls in 3D. fondling and flashing, wet t-shirt contests, shaved crotches, etc, etc, etc.

I think it's trashier than Maxim, but then when that magazine is invoked I think of the truly tawdry way in which Michael Bay shot every woman in Transfomers 2. The music during the swimming scene was pretty ott, and the wet t-shirt contest didn't seem as much for leering as it was for Eli Roth to be set up to have his head crushed.

As for tipping their hand with the structure, I think of the seismologist getting on the waverunner to save people only for them to drop that and not bother, instead concentrating on the kid in the boat driving over all the swimmers and scalping that girl with the propellor. Their interests clearly lie in the death.

There was like a 10 second sex scene in Final Destination 3D. It was funny but I saw the future of cinema in those 10 seconds. There was blood and gore too obviously. The 3D was implemented badly in that film; it made me have a headache. The plot was as obvious as the predecessors but it looked sorta big budget and things flew at your face so I guess I kind of enjoyed it. One cheesy 3D "horror" movie is enough for me

you doesn't hasta call me johnson (CaptainLorax), Tuesday, 24 August 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)

i wouldn't so much say "creative" deaths as much as "unrestrained and no holds barred". you pretty much get to see what bodies would look like if more people walked through propellers on a daily basis.

yeah, in spite of my old-man bitching, gore here was some of the best i've ever seen. reminiscent of like day of the dead, and of similar detail/quality, but with state-of-the-art digital integration of the prosthetic ruination with actual actors. that the victims were nearly nude and everything takes place in full sunlight did kinda push this into new territory.

agree that the apex of the feeding frenzy (which lasted for like 10 minutes onscreen, or at least felt like it) hit a rather unusual plateau of almost psychedelic gruesomeness. not devoid of humor, but at the same time almost insanely grisly & cruel.

Yeah I'm kinda with San Te in that there was a disconnect when the gore got kind of SERIOUS BUSINESS all of a sudden. When in movies like evil dead/dead alive/cemetary man, it is always played for the lols.

have been wondering since the advent of decent digital integration of prosthetic effects and human actors when we'll see a really real zombie flick. one that actually communicates (for better or worse) what it's like to be eaten alive, bite after agonizing bite, by a ravening horde. technology's been available for quite a few years, but no one's gone there yet. not, at least, that i know of... one obvious obstacle is that high quality digital gore of the sort on display in piranha 3D still costs a TON of money. another, i'm sure, is a reluctance on the part of investors to gamble on the mainstream interest in seeing something so viscerally horrible presented in the name of "entertainment".

over the last decade or so, however, the likes of roth, tarantino, zombie and aja have shown, repeatedly, that there IS a substantial audience for truly ghastly cinematic experiences, sights undreamed of by rubber-bound 80s gorehounds. the final chow-down here easily eclipses kill bill's house of blue leaves sequence in unrelenting, extended gruesomeness, and nobody forced aja and co to present it in black & white. piranha 3D's various fish kills at least come close to my ideal (and seriously dreaded) "really real" zombie kills. i.e., not only can it be done, there's an r-rated, mainstream, moderately successful commercial precedent. wonder how long it'll be before someone takes the gamble...

More from that link about the sequel plans:

Canton said that even those actors turned into chum are asking to take a mulligan and get in the sequel. "We had such a good time that even those cast members who ended up dead want to be in the sequel," he told Deadline. "We'll have to figure out how that could work. For us, the way the film held up and then opened strong in England showed that there is room for a real 3D popcorn picture. There's a fan base that's growing and it is establishing itself as a fun movie where people are laughing and having fun." Canton said they are working out who among the creative team will return and it sounded like it's Aja's sequel to direct if he wants it.

CW COMMENTS: Make sure the beer bottle in guy's hand is generic or paint over.
Please cover up more of the breast area of the woman on left who comes up out of the water with the other girl.
Need to lose the shot of woman in thong doing dry humping/grinding motion on top of the other girl with thong. Obviously, both of these women's naked-thonged butts are facing the camera and as I would say to add coverage to their butts, we just need to lose this shot all together. Now, this shot is in super low res so I don't have great detail on the white t-shirted girls, but just in case... for the woman facing the camera, we need to make sure we cannot see any nipple protrusion, that this t-shirt is NOT "wet" or that there is any breast jiggling.
Please make sure girls on stage have enough coverage on their butts (like the one to the far right as we do see the side of her).
FOX COMMENTS:
Please lose "titties," and "Pissed."
Comments to specific frames:
At 00:08 - please crop this shot or cover the woman's breasts more in this shot. (scene with the 2 woman coming up to the surface from underwater)
At 00:09 - Please lose this shot (woman in thong on all fours with other woman behind her in grinding motion)
At 00:11 - If, in this shot in higher definition, we can see any of the women's nipples through their shirts, this shot will be problematic. (close-up of woman's breast area in wet t-shirt)
At 00:15 - please lose this shot, crop it or provide more coverage on the woman's rear end on the far right. (the scene with women in white t-shirts on stage)
At 00:24 - Please lose this shot (woman in black 'peace' bikini with blood splattered on her body & face)

screw you jimbo, this movie is like a zillion times better than fuckin' AVATAR:

James Cameron has launched a rant against the 3D remake of 'Piranha' - saying it "cheapens the medium".

The director is no stranger to the franchise of course. His directorial debut was the sequel to the 1978 original, but was subsequently fired half way through shooting. He then went on to make 'The Terminator' instead.

However, he is frustrated that the 3D technology seen in his groundbreaking 'Avatar' is being used in horror films like 'Piranha 3D'.

He told Vanity Fair, "I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but that is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D. Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like 'Friday the 13th 3-D'.

"When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial life span, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip.”

He added, "And that’s not what’s happening now with 3-D. It is a renaissance—right now the biggest and the best films are being made in 3-D. Martin Scorsese is making a film in 3-D. Disney’s biggest film of the year, 'TRON: Legacy', is coming out in 3-D. So it’s a whole new ballgame."

didn't see it. actually the 3D in piranha was pretty poor, but the application of it in that level of material was perfect.

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 20:54 (fifteen years ago)

well ditto w MBV 3-D

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 31 August 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

A Retort!

Jim, are you kidding or what? First of all, let’s start by you accepting the fact that you were the original director of PIRANHA 2 and you were fired. Shame on you for thinking that genre movies and the real maestros like Roger Corman and his collaborators are any less auteur or impactful in the history of cinema than you. Martin Scorcese made Boxcar Bertha at the beginning of his career. And Francis Ford Coppola made Dimentia 13 back in 1963. And those are just a few examples of the talented and successful filmmakers whose roots are in genre films. Who are you to impugn any genre film or its creators?

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 21:23 (fifteen years ago)

The simple truth is that I had nothing but good things to say about AVATAR and my own experience since I actually saw it and didn’t damn someone else’s talent publicly in order to disassociate myself from my origins in the business from which we are all very fortunate. To be honest, I found the 3D in AVATAR to be inconsistent and while ground breaking in many respects, sometimes I thought it overwhelmed the storytelling. Technology aside, I wish AVATAR had been more original in its storytelling.

BURN

a cankle of rads (Gukbe), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 21:26 (fifteen years ago)

i mean,

Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like 'Friday the 13th 3-D'.

is pretty much the selling point of pirahna to the 25-and-up crowd, honestly

porn_wand.xxx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 21:37 (fifteen years ago)

like seriously, Cameron is an idiot.

Because i'm not a fucking dipshit, I didn't see this trailer and go "WOW PIRAHNAS THEY WILL FLY @ ME FACE THIS LOOKS RADICOOL LIKE AVATARD"

It was more like, "Oh this director clearly has a soft spot for culty, schlocky 70s and 80s 3D trash and wants to make a modern version. I will support that."

porn_wand.xxx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 21:40 (fifteen years ago)

i'd like to think that anyone seeing this movie KNOWS it's intentionally gimmicky because it's throwing back to a gimmicky time, not because it wants to the future of movie watching

porn_wand.xxx (Whiney G. Weingarten), Tuesday, 31 August 2010 21:41 (fifteen years ago)
