i dont know if theres been a thread about edinburgh before, but im moving there for three months in two weeks and ive never been there. so enquiring minds wanna know: classic or dud? search and destroy??

amy, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

My experience there was very limited, but I'd venture classic. Encountered a great pub, the National Museum and some absolutely beautiful views and architecture within the space of twenty-four hours, a good sign. I suspect you'd want to live in the right place, though, as I heard stories of some Not Nice Locations.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

You are moving at the wrong time, Amy, cos August sees Edinburgh invaded by an army of Oxbridge thesps, tv producers, street "entertainers" and tourists.

However, if you can ride it out, Edinburgh is great - the prettiest city in Britain, I would say. Loads of good restaurants, pubs with reasonable opening hours, great record shops etc etc. I dunno about clubs etc - there is a pretty good regular artskooldisko - but then Glasgow is only 50 minutes away for that kind of thing. Have fun!

stevie t, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

I liked Glasgow better.

Tadeusz Suchodolski, Sunday, 22 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

If you see Bubble Mac Doughnagol, tell him I want my orange merkin back.

Mike Hanley, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

How many of them gothic punk kids who do school shootings?

Sterling Clover, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Classic, I’d have to say. Forget all this Glasgow vs. Edinburgh nonsense. My wife’s from Glasgow but my Sister lives in Edinburgh and really there ain’t much to choose between them though the rivalry is very real.

Having said that after a number of years with Glasgow in the ascendant Edinburgh appears to be on the rise and certainly is looking more prosperous, prob a result of the Scottish Parliament. Typical city in having some dodgy areas (Niddrie, Granton, Muirhouse) but other prosperous areas (Morningside, Cramond), Leith (down towards docks) was considered rough but is becoming increasingly gentrified as Parliamentarians and ancillary staff moves into area.

Architecturally prob one of the finest cities in UK although it lacks the genius of a Rennie Mackintosh or Thomson which Glasgow has. Not too sure pop culture wise though plenty of great pubs/restaurants, Glasgow having edge over past 15-20 years but ‘high’ culture exceptionally well served. Anyway it is a beautiful city and as Stevie T said Glasgow’s only 50 mins away.

Plug, go to AJ’s café in the Royal Mile esp. for the cakes. It is my sister’s partners though; mention my name and you may get a discount (or prob not.)

search: cheap CDs from Fopp

m jemmeson, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Well I don't know much about Edinburgh (Thompson's your man) but me and Tom will be up there this weekend spreading our bad vibes round the town. So ILE drinking in the town if you are in the district.

Pete, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The Canny Man on Morningside Road is a pub with a BOOK OF RULES! There's a chair reserved for the cat and the first Bloody Mary of the day is on the house and there's a special room with a special knock for long-term regulars and there's no need to eat before you go because they give you great big bowls of sausage rolls and other such wholesome snacks. Glasgow's got better shops though.

Madchen, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Edinburgh is indeed CLASSIC, and I have lived here for seven out of the last eight years, as if to prove it. August is always exceptionally busy, and I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the Festival, but it does mean drinking until five a.m. in some places; September is a classic Edinburgh month, really quiet, with lovely long evenings and awesome haze / sunset effects if you're walking across the Meadows. October is naturally bad since the students all return. But to be honest, like most places, the character of the city is entirely dependent on whereabouts you are; living in Abbeyhill is one thing, living in Marchmont quite another.

Glasgow is also ace. But then I even like Dundee, Aberdeen being the only Scottish city I'm not keen on.

alex thomson, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Aberdeen was very wet and foggy the one day I visited, but I liked its low-key appeal from what I saw of it. Pretty remote, though.

Let's see, based on past encounters: Glasgow -- quite grand, spent three days there in 1992, had a wonderful wander around the city, will be seeing it again briefly this Sunday. Dundee -- only drove through it but I really liked the geography and look of the place, and of course Billy Mackenzie of the Associates was born and raised there, so clearly it is a place of Divine and Holy Goodness. St. Andrews -- where Jane the Glorious went to uni, and a nice spot it is, golf course and everything. Inverness -- didn't really spend much time there, but it and Nairn, where Jane's parents live, do both benefit from the setting.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

The one time I went to Aberdeen I had the second biggest hangover of my entire life, it was colder than anywhere else I'd ever been and the town looked like it was made out of breezeblocks. Not surprisingly, I didn't like it that much.

Richard Tunnicliffe, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

Dundee is great. Lived there between 88 and 94, used to see Billy McKenzie occasionally but unfortunately didn't have balls to go and say hello to him, far too cool and mysterious. many happy memories drinking in the pubs along the Perth Road. Not keen on Aberdeen either, suspect the oil money has went to it's head. Paul Theroux in the Kingdom by the Sea gives Aberdeen a good slagging, he doesn't have too much good to say about Dundee either though.

Billy Dods, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

skratch? \ a bit of hiphop of a week. cant rememeber where it is. la belle angele? its a sort of scotish version of the london one.

quite a lot of good stuff coming to edinburgh nowadays.

and glasgow is not far away...

ambrose, Monday, 23 July 2001 00:00 (twenty-four years ago)

two years pass...
i am going to be in edinburgh for a couple days in february (the beginning i think, not sure of dates yet). anyone fancy a beer? and is there any good stuff on at the weekends i might like?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:44 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll have a beer with you and a fight too if you want? Maybe you'll let me take you to a GAY BAR seeing as you think I'm a homophobe.

Well?

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:48 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i'm not too keen on the fighting bit, not my scene to be honest, but suggestions of good bars or pubs to go to are certainly welcome.

so, who else is in edinburgh these days besides calum and leigh?

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

there is some whisky museum where you get to ride through scottish history in a whisky barrel, surely that is a must?

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Jeez, I didn't know about that. I may have to travel through to Edinburgh for that too. IT LOOKS GREAT!

It has the smells of Scotland, apparently. What's not to love?

ailsa (ailsa), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Edinburgh is the best place ever. No foolin. I've stayed here since 1994 and I grew up nearby. I tried staying in Brighton for a bit but it was crap in comparison, even with the nicer weather. What kind of stuff are you looking for? Clubs? Bars? Sights? Sounds? Smells? What dates?

[Word of warning it will be incredibly cold in Feb. Bring 2 jackets.]

[and 2 hats <<:]

neil simpson (neil simpson), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 16:59 (twenty-two years ago)

edinburgh certainly has the smell of SOMETHING. I cannot pin it down, but there's a certain edinburgh smell. Someone said it's a bit like gravy.

ken c (ken c), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:04 (twenty-two years ago)

gareth: meet C-man and report back (if you make it back, that is).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the best thing about edinburgh is that it is only a 45 minture train journey from glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:25 (twenty-two years ago)

Ken - it's the malt from the breweries - kind of a baked potato smell? the same smell you get round Moorfoot in Sheffield from the Wards (or stones, but I think Wards) brewery.

chris (chris), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hi Gareth, I still live in Edinburgh. Well, I moved back.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

As a Glasgow native i can say that Edinburgh is Fantastic - its much friendlier and much more interesting than Glasgow. I want to move back.

jed (jed_e_3), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

by the way - the Edinburgh Dungeon is k-rub and kind of embarrassing. the little boat ride is entertaining, but the rest is just camp, and not in a good way.

DV (dirtyvicar), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

HOORAY someone agrees with me that the brewery smell is exactly like gravy. It always makes me feel like I should be setting the table for sunday lunch but my friend reckons it is the smell of pet food.

Um I am in Edinburgh too, I know I am a persistent lurker but I only just moved up here so if you're having a FAP can I come? I need to get out of the house more.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

of course, the more the merrier!

charltonlido (gareth), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Glasgow smells of that quite often too. Hops smell nice to me, but sometimes I make the 'boiled up melts for the dog' mental switch and think 'errgh'.

N. (nickdastoor), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 22:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well my friend is Spanish, maybe they just have a higher quality of dog food over there, who knows. Still makes me think of roast beef though. Strangely beer tastes nothing like this.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 17 December 2003 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Edinburgh is CLASSIC CLASSIC CLASSIC. I'd go back there in a heartbeat.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 01:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm another almost-lurker in Edinburgh. Hello.

(I'm told they occasionally have fetish nights at the Edinburgh Dungeon. That's probably the best thing about it)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 10:53 (twenty-two years ago)

i'll be up for some FAPish action. Broughton and the pubs near the top of leith walk might be an idea.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 18 December 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

I could go an FAP, although it makes me a bit nervous for some reason.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Thursday, 18 December 2003 15:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Remember that everyone in Edinburgh (that isn't a ned) is only about one degree of separation apart. If there is an FAP, we'll probably find that we all recognise each other anyway.

(I definitely would recognise alext on sight, because we were at university at the same time, and I think had mutual acquaintances)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 16:56 (twenty-two years ago)

that's pretty true, it's not a big place

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:00 (twenty-two years ago)

who was that guy that used to put on shows, brought over us bands and stuff and paid for it all out of his own pocket because he was really ill, or something? began with D. whatever happened to him?

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Bob Mills (yeah, no need to google-proof that!). He was a friend of mine for a while, and after he'd lost loads of other friends. Its a long long story, which I will not post online out of a wierd sense of loyalty I still feel to him. If you really want to know mail me offboard and I'll see if I can fill in the blanks. The email address above should work.

alext (alext), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah, i'd like to know that i think, i'll mail later today, thanks

charltonlido (gareth), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Dbob?

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Of course, this also proves the Edinburgh degrees-of-separation thesis, yet again.

alext (alext), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:21 (twenty-two years ago)

That's because it's true!

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Gareth, there's a Big Wheel and a little mini German christmas market type thing next to the Scott Monunment just now, worth a wee look - the view from the top of the wheel is grebt.

smee (smee), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

(the view from the Scott Monument is better, but you have to climb lots and lots of stairs)

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I am going to check out Harvey Nicks and Zara in the sales, but they'll be over by February. Whenever I go to Edinburgh, I seem to either be going to one specific place or to a friend's house (which I guess is also one specific place) and then I get the last train home. I'm quite looking forward to a wander. If there's a FAP I could be persuaded to come across.

Madchen (Madchen), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:27 (twenty-two years ago)

b-b-b Caitlin, the wheel is right next to the monument, almost as tall AND it goes round - do you see?

smee (smee), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:30 (twenty-two years ago)

True. Personally, though, I think the wheel is better in the dark, what with all the lights and everything; so the view doesn't really matter.

caitlin (caitlin), Thursday, 18 December 2003 17:33 (twenty-two years ago)

I really want to go on that wheel but nobody will come with me! Admittedly I am scared that it will break while I am at the top and I will die of hypothermia before they rescue me.

None of you would recognise me, however I am sort of cheating because I've only lived here for two months and know about three people. I work at Peckhams though so if you know where it is come in and say hi and buy some expensive food.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Thursday, 18 December 2003 18:41 (twenty-two years ago)

peckham's started in glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I know. It is a large organisation.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:09 (twenty-two years ago)

most of them are in glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe so. I've never been to glasgow though so I have no actual evidence.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:13 (twenty-two years ago)

; )

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 18 December 2003 19:15 (twenty-two years ago)

There are at least two of them in Edinburgh.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 19 December 2003 12:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Peckhams rules the stomach but not the wallet.

neil simpson (neil simpson), Friday, 19 December 2003 13:34 (twenty-two years ago)

The food is yummy and we get to sample all the new cakes! Which is good. Obviously.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Friday, 19 December 2003 17:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I think there are three and a half/four in glasgow and the best one is in glasgow OK.

RJG (RJG), Friday, 19 December 2003 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

If you say so. I never actually go in; just look at the bottles of expensive vodka and other spirits in the window.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 20 December 2003 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

was anyone else at the SL records thing in edinburgh last night? because I was. Maybe we saw each other across the crowded room! (although it wasn't that crowded really)

kathryn m (kathryn m), Saturday, 20 December 2003 11:14 (twenty-two years ago)

It was far too crowded. And smokey. I always forget how much indie kids think chain-smoking is cool. Please tell me you were not one of the couple dancing at the front during Ballboy who *really* needed to get a room.

alext (alext), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Ha ha I sound like an old curmudgeon.

alext (alext), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:51 (twenty-two years ago)

But Gordon obviously thought that when he read my review on NYLPM of their last Edinburgh Gig...

alext (alext), Sunday, 21 December 2003 19:57 (twenty-two years ago)

wow were you there? I am very tall and have blonde hair and was with my friend graeme who has sideburns, we went halfway through ballboy because we were v tired but I liked the starlets. I helped my friend on the door for most of the third band because he knows the promoter (ed or something?)

what do you look like alext? (this is not a chat up line honest)

kathryn m (kathryn m), Sunday, 21 December 2003 20:33 (twenty-two years ago)

the starlets are from glasgow.

RJG (RJG), Monday, 22 December 2003 00:57 (twenty-two years ago)

I remember when peckhams in bruntsfield used to be nastuiks - i used to get my lunch from there when i was at school, they did lovely filled rolls.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 22 December 2003 11:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Back in Edinburgh.

Kathryn, I am short -> medium height, short blondish hair.

I know Ed very well from uni, and my g/f was the bridesmaid at Merlin (co-runner of SL records)'s wedding.

And the Starlets are a great band -- they deserve to do really big things, and they have the best front man since Dan from Khaya toned stuff down with Desc. I am also gutted I missed the SL records party in Glasgow. Apparently Desc played the whole of _The Lost Feeling_, the last Khaya release.

alext (alext), Thursday, 1 January 2004 13:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Does anybody dislike Edinburgh?

kayT (kaytee), Thursday, 1 January 2004 13:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Alot of Glaswegians - or at least they pretend to.

jed (jed_e_3), Thursday, 1 January 2004 18:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Is bert's bar on william st still there? It was a lovely little place but someone told me it had shut.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 17:50 (twenty-two years ago)

Is this the same Bert's Bar?

Dave B (daveb), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 18:19 (twenty-two years ago)

how much does it cost to rent a flat in edinburgh?

david. (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't know but hopefully i will soon find out. If anyone needs a very tidy and lovely flatmate, then...don't ask me (ho ho ho). However I am very good at watching tv and commenting loudly and annoyingly on what people are wearing. Also on eating all your food.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

ask me! ask me!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:36 (twenty-two years ago)

ask you what? do you need a flat in edinburgh? do you want to live with me? I will do all your washing-up!

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

(this may be a lie)

kathryn m (kathryn m), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

what you moving to embra for?

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:41 (twenty-two years ago)

If anyone needs a very tidy and lovely flatmate, then... 'ask me! ask me!' :)

for work, colin, touch wood. well hopefully. the sc0ttish l4w c0mmission reprazent!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Edinburgh is great. But it's very cold this time of year. Search out the Dr Jekyl and My Hyde bar which serves some great cocktail and if you want indie tunes go to The Liquid Rooms. If you want to feel like the only white face in Harlem there's an R and B club under a bridge somewhere, but I quite like it cos a really nice girl came on to me when I was last there and I stupidly didn't take up her advances as I was trying to fix shit out with my ex at the time. I think I was the only indie kid in there.

C-Man (C-Man), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:47 (twenty-two years ago)

David wants indie tunes alright. im sure he would love the jeckyl and hyde too.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:50 (twenty-two years ago)

and the castle.

jed_ (jed), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:52 (twenty-two years ago)

that's my name you're ruining!

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 6 January 2004 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

oh my goodness i went to the liquid rooms last friday. it was my friend's choice. It was the shitest indie club i have been to in many a year and I kissed a man wearing a trucker hat. I am ashamed.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i hope you slagged off his clothes first.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:05 (twenty-two years ago)

no i tried on his hat. then threw it on the floor as i recall.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, but if you want to kop with neds you get what you deserve sweetheart. You really should have more class, women who get off with neds just have, like, no respect from me at all.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

??? how does trucker hat = ned? were you not around for the infamous trucker hat wars of 2003? trucker hat = likes momus, or something like that, can't quite remember now. anyway he was australian so he can't have been a ned.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:12 (twenty-two years ago)

if you're wearing a trucker head you're a tosser.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i like trucker hats

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:16 (twenty-two years ago)

i like them on other people.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i like ned heads

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:19 (twenty-two years ago)

i like trucker heads. and ned hats.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:20 (twenty-two years ago)

(burberry basebell cap maybe?)

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

burberry baseball caps are sooooooo hip-hop-video-from-2002

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:22 (twenty-two years ago)

http://www.slick57.com/images/toppic.jpg

gareth (gareth), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:23 (twenty-two years ago)

but tracer, i just bought one! you have shattered my dreams! must i also throw away my collection of lap-dancers and glittery chains?

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

There's such a double standard here though, cause i bet if a hot girl wore a trucker hat Calum might find it acceptable, which proves that girls have it easier than guys these days.

xpost: No!! Hop hop videos from 1992 are kind of the pinnacle of fashion, now that you mention the other things that they're constituted of. I shouldn't have been so disparaging.

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry I mean 2002

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:35 (twenty-two years ago)

If I had meant 1992 I would = a ned

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 00:45 (twenty-two years ago)

I hate ladettes and most females in clubs these days are ladettes. It's like one day women woke up and thought, "Hmm, the feminist revolution is over with so we can do as we please and act like men which, in doing so, unwittingly makes us even fucking worse than the arseholes we were originally out to stop - i.e. sexist, drunken, footies fans hollering along to 'Come on Eileen' in the street at 3am on a Saturday morning".

That's maybe why I hate clubs.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:15 (twenty-two years ago)

If the feminist revolution was over wouldn't that mean women would all go back to the adjoining room of the club and reapply their lipstick while you fetched their drinks?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I do that anyway. Next.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Next what?

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha I love how Calum can condemn sexists and then expound on what women should and shouldn't wear in the same breath. It's masterful, really!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:36 (twenty-two years ago)

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

i wish i could find the picture of the VWGolf painted in burberry check.

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:41 (twenty-two years ago)

Those guys are totally In Full Gear!

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:43 (twenty-two years ago)

the middle one is c-man, he's an indie kid right?

jed_ (jed), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

so did we clear up how much it costs to rent in edinburgh yet? approx. same as glasgow probably. haha i don't even know anyone in edinburgh. gah.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 02:35 (twenty-two years ago)

If I had meant 1992 I would = a ned

I see my name is being taken in vain again.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

i read this weird thing about feminism once, it said something about the point of feminism being that the idea was that women should be able to act in whatever way they pleased, and not have to conform to any male point of view on what that should be, and that the days of what are 'suitable' ways for women to act would one day be over

c-man, do you think that feminism is about women acting a certain way, or about having the freedom to not have to act a certain prescribed way?

man, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 08:41 (twenty-two years ago)

The berts bar i was referring to is in the west end behind shandwick place, but the stockie one sounds quite promising.

When i was thinking of renting last year the rents for a one bedroom flat in a semi decent area came in at about £400pcm but they could have gone up since then, sorry i can't be more precise, i decided to buy instead.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Bert's is still there, behin Shandwick Place. They still do excellent pies too.

hmmmmm, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Glad to hear it, ta.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 09:32 (twenty-two years ago)

£200 for a bedroom in a shared flat is a good price nowadays. I pay £550 for a three-bedroom place, which I think is damn cheap for Edinburgh.

(I really should get flatmates some time; it might be damn cheap for three bedrooms, but it's not if you're the only one living there)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 10:45 (twenty-two years ago)

That is really cheap for here, i wonder what i'd get if rented my flat out.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, it is a ex-council flat. It's right near the city centre, though.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Mine's an ex-council flat, but it's not that close to the city centre, kind of between leith and portobello (not lochend i should add).

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Aaah. Mine's on the Dumbiedykes estate.

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to live just up the road from there, in Newington. Are there still dodgy folk roaming around with scary rotweilers or has the holyrood effect gentrified the area?

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Nah, still plenty of dodgy folk :-)

caitlin (caitlin), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:34 (twenty-two years ago)

I feel I should retract my earlier statement. I am both tidy and lovely, just in case any potential flatmates are reading this.

kathryn m (kathryn m), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 11:59 (twenty-two years ago)

A propos of nothing... here is a list of my all time top 5 Edinburgh pubs... as far as I know only three still exist, you just had to be there, y'know?

5. The Antiquary on St Stephen's Street, Stockbridge. By the time you've walked all the way down Frederick Street, you need a few drinks before you can face the climb back up... used to do a champagne happy hour (quite out of character with it's surroundings) with champers for £10 a bottle, which once caused me to end up halfway over the Forth Road Bridge (search the "Phantom Pubs" thread - best thread ever on ILE in my opinion...)

4. The Penny Black in the east end. Posties pub, opens at 5am, shuts at 6pm. They are used to it, so whatever you do, it won't matter. Occasionally you do spot a genuine postman - usually though it's just very, very drunk people putting Neil Diamond on the jukebox. I once tried to phone my then girlfriend from this pub at 6am to tell her that Robbie Williams had left Take That. She was not impressed.

3. The Pelican (RIP) on the Cowgate. Open til a ridiculous time during the festival. Poncey and townie and full of idiots, but scene of so many happy evenings that it warrants a mention anyway. Hilarious mic-wielding DJ would intersperse "This one's for Sharon, who's 22 tonight!" with "Security to the dancefloor please..." on a regular basis...

2. The St James Oyster Bar (RIP) on Calton Road, now called Pivo I think. I worked here for a couple of years, so I am biased, but it was ace. Too many highlights to mention - Gregor the rude quizmaster, "Sleepless Nights" - a sad cowboy club me and Kevin used to run, watching them film Trainspotting outside, all the HMV gang, Sandy singing "Down By the River", serving Peter Perrett Dover sole...

1. The Marina Hotel between Inverleith Terrace and Montague Terrace in Goldenacre. You have to go. It's a blast. The only pub I have been in since that comes close is the Palm Tree in Mile End.

I'll never go back to Edinburgh, cos it's a soul destroying shithole, but it was great fun while it lasted. And you really should check out that Phantom Pubs thread...

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 15:40 (twenty-two years ago)

'soul destroying shithole' - explain please.

Pivo is shit. Really loud tedious music and always really busy. Shit chairs too. Really annoying that it's the nearest pub to the venue.

I have never been to any of the pubs you describe although I may now do so.

hmmmmmm, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:15 (twenty-two years ago)

well, i guess i was being a bit harsh... there's nothing intrinsically wrong with Edinburgh, most of my resentment towards it is personal - sometimes a place starts to take on a character of it's own and in my mind at least, Edinburgh was out to get me. All in the past now thankfully.

I've been in Pivo a few times for old times sake and yes, it is pretty shit. It always makes me laugh though that in the bit at the start of Trainspotting where Ewan McGregor gets run down, the "road" the car is coming out of isn't actually a road. He only drank Appletise, you know...

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 16:25 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't give a shit what feminism is really. I was brought up by women and never had a central male figure in my life so I'm of the opinion that women are as capable and deserving of high paid jobs as men. I am more respectful towards women than men (perhaps because of my upbringing). I hate it when I see a woman not making the best of her appearance, because - really - the opposite sex is the most beautiful thing in the world.

I think, however, that girls who have decided it would be great imitate the very dregs of masculinity - drinking, footie, casual sex, acting like an arsehole - is unwise. It just makes me shake my head and it's a dumbass thing to aspire to.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:32 (twenty-two years ago)

That is fair enough, it is good that you have views on the best way women should act, and perhaps some of them will actually listen to what you say, and improve themselves to a standard you consider higher.

But, on the other hand, are drinking and casual sex, really that bad. I think they are really rather fun

Lady, Wednesday, 7 January 2004 17:38 (twenty-two years ago)

rent out to me! rent out to me! haha sorry. i don't even know if i'll definitely be moving to edinburgh just yet but it's what i want to do.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 18:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Casual Sex, as I've explained many times, has 0% appeal to me. I'm a romantic and I'd sooner have no sex than casual sex.

C-Man (C-Man), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:03 (twenty-two years ago)

you're lucky.

cozen (Cozen), Wednesday, 7 January 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

How's my former colleague getting on in his new job?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 January 2004 09:29 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know actually... been meaning to phone him, he left a message on new year's eve and sounded in good form though. I might have to go and visit him for a bit of peace and quiet! Do you know what his new job is? He just told me he'd moved....

reclusive hero (reclusive hero), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:38 (twenty-two years ago)

When i said new job i meant the one he started in late 2002, i think it was in a housing office in granton, last time i saw him was at our office xmas piss up in december 2002.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 January 2004 10:47 (twenty-two years ago)

Edinburghers up to 8% short

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 12:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Bah. That's just when I have my parents visiting. Sorry.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I am moving this weekend and I am worried you might be a rapist. No offence intended.

hmm, Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:47 (twenty-two years ago)

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:53 (twenty-two years ago)

cozen (Cozen), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:17 (twenty-two years ago)

so is this february FAP ever going to happen?

The weather today was mental - first it was really sunny and then a blizzard started out of nowhere! bloody scotland.

also I am going to THE EGG tonight apparently Edinburgh's top indie club is it good? do i need some arts student to sign me in or something? everything is so complicated here!

kathryn m (kathryn m), Saturday, 7 February 2004 17:41 (twenty-two years ago)

nice place but traffic is a nightmare 1 way sytem travel sucks

Emma williams (Emma williams), Saturday, 7 February 2004 18:24 (twenty-two years ago)

Any student should be able to get you in to The Egg, whether from the art college or not.

caitlin (caitlin), Saturday, 7 February 2004 19:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I used to work at The Egg about 10 years ago.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 16 February 2004 13:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Shot in the dark: is anyone either looking for a flat in Edinburgh, or know anyone who is?

I've decided I should get people to move into my spare bedrooms, to share the rent out a bit. If I find two people to move in, it will be £185 each, which I think is damn cheap for Edinburgh. So, if you know anyone who's looking, let me know.

caitlin (caitlin), Sunday, 14 March 2004 12:14 (twenty-two years ago)

i am possibly looking for a room, and my friend may be too! shall i email you? is that an address you can check?

kathryn m (kathryn m), Sunday, 14 March 2004 14:30 (twenty-two years ago)

caitlin! I might be looking for a flat in edinburgh. but I won't need to move in until september and anyway it isn't confirmed yet. : /

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 14 March 2004 17:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Ahh. I really need someone right away.

Kathryn: email me. The address I use here is a real one.

Revive!

Need local knowledge - hiring a car on Sunday in Edinburgh - most appear to be at the Airport - I know Hertz have a place in the City itself - any others? Any local companies that are good (as opposed to the global chains)?

Ta

Dave B (daveb), Monday, 5 April 2004 09:50 (twenty-two years ago)

list of places. I guess, the lower the #, after the EH, the closer to the centre of town (w/ waverley station hertz being EH1). a friend of my brother's used to work, at enterprise. he got good deals but maybe because he had a friend, that worked there.

Does anyone know if Extra Width's still running at the Southern Cross on Cockburn St?

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 13:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes I do, and no it isn't.

___ (___), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Has it moved somewhere else? I've not been since the gilded balloon burned down.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:07 (twenty-one years ago)

It stopped a fair while back - Stuart moved to London. He has since moved back, so maybe it will start up again. I'll ask Keiron next week.

___ (___), Tuesday, 27 July 2004 14:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah right, thanks for letting me know. Keiron caught me when i fainted at a teenage fanclub gig in 1991.

So rents are still horribly expensive? Not much better than the south of England?

Charles Dexter (Holey), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 12:49 (twenty-one years ago)

You won't get a one bedroom place for less than £350. the ones for £350-400 are pretty crappy and in awkward / crap parts of town. There's a big jump in quality for what you are able to get for your money if you are willing to share. £250 is the minimum for anything in a shared flat and, again, they will not be very nice. Where are you looking to stay?

[Am I allowed to plug the club thing that I am starting up this weekend in Edinburgh on here? I am slightly terrified that no-one is going to come.]

hmmm (hmmm), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 13:19 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't know where I'm looking to stay - don't really know Edinburgh too well. I was thinking that the further from London, the cheaper renting a flat would be. Obviously not. Is Glasgow similarly expensive? Maybe I should try Inverness.

Charles Dexter (Holey), Wednesday, 2 March 2005 13:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I think Glasgow is a bit better. I would try Poland.

So Keith and I were thinking about a December Edinburgh FAP. Would anyone be interested (are there any ILXors left in Edin. even?) or would it just be us sitting in a pub talking old bollocks about music again? (way to advertise, dude). (And asking this on a Friday means no-one will see the thread neither :-( )

alext (alext), Friday, 18 November 2005 10:22 (twenty years ago)

With December being mental for christmas get togethers and things I can't guarantee being able to turn up to one, but in principle I'd be interested.

Greig (treefell), Friday, 18 November 2005 11:21 (twenty years ago)

i'd come through for an edinFAP, aye. but: what greig said about xmas an' that.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 18 November 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

My December will not be mental for get-togethers and my better half will be on the other side of the world (literally) :-(

alext (alext), Friday, 18 November 2005 11:58 (twenty years ago)

I've got quite a few Christmas things on, but why change a winning formula?

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:07 (twenty years ago)

Yes from me. Can we go to The Pond?

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:29 (twenty years ago)

which one's the pond? can't we go to the spider's web?

(nb: joke.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 21 November 2005 20:36 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to go to the Pond. Never been there before though. It has a soft rock night I believe...

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 21 November 2005 21:23 (twenty years ago)

You missing here already, Neil?

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 08:25 (twenty years ago)

I'll come, doesn't seem right that my only FAPs have been in London. Where's the Pond?

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 09:33 (twenty years ago)

I may be available for an Edinburgh FAP just after the Glasgow Christmas FAP.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 22 November 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

The Pond's in Leith... Salamander Street, I think.

What date are we going to do this, then? Any suggestions?

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 08:26 (twenty years ago)

Erm. Thursday 8th December?

alext (alext), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 09:19 (twenty years ago)

That's my brother's birthday (not that i think he expects me to spend it with him).

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 09:25 (twenty years ago)

How about Sat 10th December then?

Thursday's fine by me right enough; think I've a Christmas do on Friday, though.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

i'm ok with either date.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 12:24 (twenty years ago)

I think I might have something on the Sat. but since we're likely to be the only three people there, Thurs only poss. if Leigh is not with her bro. My brother's birthday is the Tuesday, funnily enough.

alext (alext), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 12:57 (twenty years ago)

If i was going to my brother's it would only be to see his dog, the little shite didn't get me a birthday present.

Do any buses pass by the pond? i'm not familiar with that part of leith in spite of living quite close by.

leigh (leigh), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 13:40 (twenty years ago)

It's a couple of minutes walk from the junction of constitution st and commercial street. 12 goes along Salamander St; 16 and 35 go down constitution st. and turn down commercial st. I'll be walking across the park from the bottom of easter road since I'm not afraid of the dark (side of leafy Leith Links).

alext (alext), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 15:11 (twenty years ago)

Thursday's fine, if it's cool with the Glasgow people upthread. I will walk down Leith walk. My brother's birthday is the 9th May, which doesn't pose any problems.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

the 8th would be good because of this ... is anyone else up for it? obviously it would mean meeting somewhere other than leith ...

failing that, i can do the 10th. so much for my hectic social calendar. bah.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

Jesus, we don't have to watch a band do we?

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

that'll be the 10th, then ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:02 (twenty years ago)

Well I don't mind if others are up for it... I don't think Alex can make Saturday.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:06 (twenty years ago)

plums.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:08 (twenty years ago)

Well, maybe he can. I didn't fully understand his comment.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:10 (twenty years ago)

i don't think i've ever fully understood anything alex has said :)

nb: this is a joke.

well, apart from that time i rang him in a panic, while revising for my finals, and asked him to explain poststructuralism. over pints in the earl of marchmont.

the only bit i fully remember was: "haven't you two sorry fuckers got hovels to go back to?"

enough, i'm off to the GYM.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:13 (twenty years ago)

I could possibly do the 8th. Not the 10th though, I'm afraid. Gig of the year in Glasgow, which I can't miss.

Ally C (Ally C), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:25 (twenty years ago)

enough, i'm off to the GYM.

I hope that's a joke.

Ally: Chas & Dave?

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

Sorry... Chas 'n' Dave.

KeefW (kmw), Wednesday, 23 November 2005 19:29 (twenty years ago)

You missing here already, Neil?

I'm spending, on average, one weekend out of every 2 in edinburgh at the moment. I miss some of the people there but I don't miss the place.

I'm totally flexible with regards to dates & times & locations. I realise the pond is totally inconvenient for anyone (myself included) whodoes not stay in leith.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:18 (twenty years ago)

is that your real e-mail address neil?

cozen (Cozen), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:24 (twenty years ago)

Leith's a bit awkward for me as I commute in from Fife.

Greig (treefell), Thursday, 24 November 2005 13:49 (twenty years ago)

is that your real e-mail address neil?

I'll send you my real email address...

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:18 (twenty years ago)

I could probably make the Saturday if that's easier for people. Or we afternoon FAP if it's the w/end. I thought this was a local FAP for local people, mind :-)

alext (alext), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:35 (twenty years ago)

Edinburgh and Glasgow are local.

hmmm (hmmm), Thursday, 24 November 2005 14:36 (twenty years ago)

Is Salamander St the street that runs through the links to the foot of Restalrig Road? Depending on what time the FAP is, i'll be getting the 25, 32 or 49 to Duke street and walking down Constitution street.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:24 (twenty years ago)

Just been looking at the map, from what i can gather salamander street is a continuation of seafield road, am i right?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

Yup. Joins Seafield road to Commercial St. It's a bit of a waste land down there.

alext (alext), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

saturday evening would be good for me. if i'm coming to edinburgh on the thursday, i will be duty-bound to go to the swimmer one thing - and feel obliged to force everyone to accompany me.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

saturday afternoon is do-able, though.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Saturday afternoon sounds like a plan. What about the Cameo, it's nice there and probably easier to get to?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 24 November 2005 16:44 (twenty years ago)

Are we going with Sat p.m. then? Original discussion with Keith involved the Filmhouse, in honour of our many-years-ago theory. Will there be a contingent from the weej going to this Swimmer One thing anyway?

alext (alext), Thursday, 24 November 2005 17:29 (twenty years ago)

Saturday afernoon is fine by me... Leigh, when you say the Cameo, I assume you mean the Cameo down in Leith (is it on Commercial Street?) or do you mean the Cameo Cinema bar at Tollcross?

It doesn't matter to me; I'm happy with all the plans.

Happy to come along to the Swimmer One thing to see you Simon; just can't be arsed trying to talk to people over a load of noise from pish bands. Swimmer One is a Wire b-side isn't it? How obscure. If I ran a night, I'd call it "rabbit".

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

...Actually, when we did do a night a few years ago, Dave wanted to call it "The Soft Machine", so I went ahead and made a bunch of nice colour posters to hang up about the place on the night. He did burst out laughing when he saw them, as I'd written "The Soft Parade" all over them. D'oh!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:25 (twenty years ago)

I guessed she meant the cinema / superpub (ok not anymore, but it still smells of wee) given the 'easier to get to' bit ;-).

alext (alext), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:43 (twenty years ago)

Grimly, it's Jacki3's leaving shinnndig of drunken bammery on the 10th.

stet (stet), Thursday, 24 November 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)

I actually meant the Cameo pub in Leith.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:28 (twenty years ago)

Yes, see 'easy to get to' is relative to where you are... So the Cameo in Leith is easy to get to for say, sailors.

The one time I've been in there I liked it, quite happy, but if others want further up town so they can get there more easily then that's fine too.

Let's make a decision tomorrow!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:32 (twenty years ago)

I like the Leith cameo -- it doesn't smell of wee, and I shall stop trying to second-guess Leigh!

alext (alext), Thursday, 24 November 2005 19:57 (twenty years ago)

I've not been to the Cameo cinema bar in years, from what i can remember it's pretty tiny.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 25 November 2005 10:02 (twenty years ago)

They expanded through the wall into the shop next door, so it's a lot bigger and now a trendy place for Edinburgh's middle aged cinema goers to drink. It is usually very smokey though.

alext (alext), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:31 (twenty years ago)

Aren't they talking about ripping up the seats in the main screen and converting it to a bar?
I read something about there being a campaign to save it.

Greig (treefell), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:39 (twenty years ago)

It would be a shame if they turned the Cameo into a superpub, i always liked it but tend to go to Filmhouse for arthousey flicks.

leigh (leigh), Friday, 25 November 2005 11:52 (twenty years ago)

Swimmer One is a Wire b-side isn't it

no. that's "our swimmer".

alex: if there's no thursday-night fappery, i won't bother coming through for the gig (sorry, swimmer one) ... saturday afternoon is cool, though. hurrah. wherever we may end up.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 25 November 2005 13:42 (twenty years ago)

Ah, right you are. I'm actually semi-glad I got it wrong, unless getting it wrong is cool in ILX land, in which case I would have liked to have got it right. Or vice versa.

I can't see the hordes that will attend this fitting into the Cameo cinema bar, but then I also sympathise with those who don't live in Edinburgh and don't want to go looking for the Cameo bar.

Here's a suggestion - how's about the (Car) Wash on the mound? It's easy to get to for travellers.

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:27 (twenty years ago)

NO NOT THE CAR WASH IT SUCKS COCKS IN HELL.

i'd be well up for the cameo bar. it'd be like a homecoming. of sorts.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

Simon, you'll have to keep up... Which Cameo bar?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

I'm just going to meet Ath0le in the Car Wash shortly. What's so bad about it?

KeefW (kmw), Friday, 25 November 2005 18:51 (twenty years ago)

It's not particularly horrid. There are just many better places.

Kays Bar? The barman has a waxed Dali type moustache.

hmmm (hmmm), Saturday, 26 November 2005 13:48 (twenty years ago)

keith, sorry: i meant the cinema one in my post, although i was being slightly tongue-in-cheek. i don't think it'd be entirely practical.

i haven't been in the car wash since 1994, but i remember it as a vile seventies theme pub populated by second-year english-lit undergraduates in silly hats talking about how they were taking up the didgeridoo.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 26 November 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

Simon, the biggest problem it has for me now is that it isn't a '70s theme pub. It's been done up, at least twice since then. It did strike me there last night you might've hated it as it was right next to your halls.

Neil, Kay's Bar is a great idea, and the bloke is funny; like the bar man in Withnail and I, but I'm fairly sure it's been something else for about four years now. Come to think of it, maybe I'm thinking of another place. I think it's called Indigo now. Ah! No, I'm thinking of Aubrey's, which had a similar landlord and was in a similar place.

OK. We should vote. The voting closes Monday at 8 o'clock. The (practical) suggestions are:

- The Cameo in Leith
- The Car Wash
- Kay's Bar in the new town

KeefW (kmw), Saturday, 26 November 2005 17:01 (twenty years ago)

Kay's looks good. It would seem that i've agreed to dog sit on the evening of 10/12 so i might not be able to stay for that long.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 28 November 2005 09:36 (twenty years ago)

central is good, and Wash is not good (difficult table layout?), so my vote for Kays I s'pose.

alext (alext), Monday, 28 November 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

Kays.

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 28 November 2005 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Where is Jamaica St btw?

leigh (leigh), Monday, 28 November 2005 11:47 (twenty years ago)

Dunno.

alext (alext), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:01 (twenty years ago)

If you're interested: http://www.savethecameo.org/

beanz (beanz), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:03 (twenty years ago)

isn't jamaica st up in the second part of the new town?

RJG (RJG), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:06 (twenty years ago)

yes: it's a really cool area. i used to go walking round there admiring the buildings a lot. kay's sounds fantastic to me.

what sort of time are we doing this thang?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:23 (twenty years ago)

Kays bar is here

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Oh yes I have been there I think. I drank too much.

3pm was mentioned at some point, wasn't it?

alext (alext), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:45 (twenty years ago)

was it?

i can be there for about 4ish. or so.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 28 November 2005 12:53 (twenty years ago)

Three pm would be ideal as it'd give me plenty time to get back to give Jed his dinner and evening walk. I'd better not drink too much as drunken dog walking is not to be recommended.

leigh (leigh), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:06 (twenty years ago)

Conversation whilst watching (I later found out) Swimmer One the other day:

Me: "Do you know what this band are called?"
Bloke sitting next to me: "SHITE"
Me: "Is that actually the name of the band, or just your opinion?"
Bloke: "My opinion"
Me: "It would be good if you got to name every band you saw. I get the feeling most of them would be called 'SHITE'"
Bloke: "Yes, they would. Why, what would you call this band?"
Me: "I would called them 'I'm quite enjoying this'"
Bloke (giving me a funny look): "Oh"

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 28 November 2005 13:35 (twenty years ago)

What did he think of Smoosh?

hmmm (hmmm), Monday, 28 November 2005 17:34 (twenty years ago)

I didn't think it prudent to ask.

Ally C (Ally C), Monday, 28 November 2005 18:07 (twenty years ago)

Cool, Kays it is then. It's just off the bottom of Frederick street at St.Stephen's cathedral/churchy thing.

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 28 November 2005 18:11 (twenty years ago)

Talking of smoosh, a conversation at Somerfield made me laugh yesterday... Someone went up to the Deli counter and asked "Do you sell Smash?"

KeefW (kmw), Monday, 28 November 2005 18:12 (twenty years ago)

ha! ally C, i wish i could tell swimmer one that story.

but they'd cry.

i might wait until andrew stands me up for lunch again or something :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Monday, 28 November 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

When i think about it i've passed Kay's loads of times and wondered what it was like.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 10:15 (twenty years ago)

*DERAIL*
Have any of you ever commuted between Glasgow and Edinburgh? I live a 20-minute walk from Queen Steet (or a five-minute bus) and I'm looking at a job on Broughton Street Lane, which looks like it's quite near Waverley. Would you do it? Would you pay 2,500 smackers for a season ticket or drive? I have a car and live to the East of the city centre, very close to the M8 so that's an option too.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:01 (twenty years ago)

For a variety of reasons, I cannot/would rather not move house.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:02 (twenty years ago)

jesus, mädchen, don't do the M8 every day. it is soul-destroying.

i commuted from marchmont (15 minutes' swift walk from waverley) to duke street for three months back in 1997, and i have to say i wasn't very happy. but then i moved to glasgow and i was even less happy ... which made me realise the reasons for my unhappiness were nothing to do with the commute and more to do with me being a knob about a girl :)

once i'd got that sorted, i went out and got whammed and all was well again.

anyway: alext has been doing the big commute for at least a year. over to him.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:07 (twenty years ago)

Lucy,

If you're going to do it, that's probably about as easy as it gets; it's just 5 minutes from Waverley and you're quite close to Queen Street. I know people who live in Houston (near Paisley that is!) that commute every day.

Parking is not good in Edinburgh, certainly in the city centre. You can park in and around Bellvue, but it's not easy and you'd have to get in early. I would avoid driving, unless you're likely to be in work very early and don't mind a ten minute walk or so from where you park.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:13 (twenty years ago)

The Broughton Street area has really good shops too. Crombies sausages are stuff of legend.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:16 (twenty years ago)

I do lean towards the train, definitely. I'd read an absolute ton - something I miss very much now that I drive to work - and also become one of those terrible women who trowels on her make-up each morning and spills powder in her neighbour's lap. So Keith, if I got the 8 o'clock train, I could be at work for 9 o'clock?

There's a job going at my current place of employment which I want a lot more, but I handed in my application a fortnight ago and they reckon it'll be another 1-2 weeks before they have a shortlist for interview ffs! My current contract finishes at the end of December and I don't really want to start the new year as a temp so that's why I'm looking elsewhere.

x-post: is it near Harvey Nicks, or am I looking at the map upside down?

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Cool, Kays it is then. It's just off the bottom of Frederick street at St.Stephen's cathedral/churchy thing.

no that is a different pub (and i think it's Howe St/Circus Lane corner yr thinking of)

Kay's is, according to hmmm's link, on Jamaica St - ie. in the area bounded by Howe St, India St, Heriot Row & Royal Circus

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

Commuting by car into Edinburgh is a soul destroying task.
The train is much better, if still not exactly fun.
Also as the Glasgow-Edinburgh express is the flagship route, Scotrail do pretty much everything they can to make sure it runs to timetable.
6 carriages every time, too, so a seat is pretty much guaranteed.

Greig (treefell), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

BSL is near enough to harvey nicks regardless of what way up you hold the map

Snowy Mann (rdmanston), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:23 (twenty years ago)

8 o'clock for 9 o'clock sounds pretty reasonable yeah. Train takes about 50 minutes, so yeah, give or take the train being late.

It's five minutes walk to Harvey Nicks. It's just down from Lewis's. Leigh's right; that area's dead nice. I'm moving to near there soon.

Snowy - OK... Confuses me a bit right enough; I walk past there every day to go to work! I'll open my eyes tomorrow.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:24 (twenty years ago)

The train never runs to timetable. Never ever. It's always between three and eight minutes late, so much so that I'm surprised they don't just allocate it more time on the schedules and admit what everyone knows i.e. that it is slower than it was ten years ago (due to increased frequency, so there may be a silver lining).

I have commuted to Glasgow since October 2002. It is totally soul-destroying and horrible. I only have to do it for about four more days thank fuck. Part of the problem for me is that I have to walk up Leith Walk, get the train, get the world's most rubbish tube train to Hillhead and then walk up the hill to walk, which takes 1 hour 40 mins. on average, which is 3 hours 20 minutes of my day wasted.

alext (alext), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:29 (twenty years ago)

I don't quite know why, but reading that made me smile.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:33 (twenty years ago)

What because of Alex's misfortune?!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:35 (twenty years ago)

I think it's more because he only has to do it for four more days. And because, ironically, that's exactly how I felt when I left behind the London commute. Hearty ha.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:38 (twenty years ago)

I actually 'commute' for 1 hr 10 minutes a day, but it's just walking, which I like. Listening to walkman. Walking and Rocking! Having said that, once I move house, it'll be more like 10 minutes to work. Hooray for getting out of bed at 9:30!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:40 (twenty years ago)

3 to 8 minutes late is good by Scotrail's standards! I've not been on a train that was less than 10 minutes late in at least two months commuting from Kirkcaldy to Edinburgh.

Greig (treefell), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:42 (twenty years ago)

Broughton Street also has good pubs and restaurants.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:47 (twenty years ago)

message to mrs "lurking" fiendish: go on. you know you want to post something about the E&G and train times. do it. do it. etc.

(although this afternoon she's having lunch at, er, the tunnocks tea cake factory in uddingston, so ... hmph.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I have just been asked to go for an interview.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

yay!

what, RIGHT NOW?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

sorry, meant to add a ":)" to that.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Ooh, good luck.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:04 (twenty years ago)

Lucy, last time I saw you in Edinburgh we were in the:

NO NOT THE CAR WASH IT SUCKS COCKS IN HELL.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:06 (twenty years ago)

Really? Gosh. That was a long time ago, I think. Was that the same night we went to the cafe with the black and white floor? I should come back across soon, but I think I'll be too busy for the pre-Christmas FAP.

I've just found out I'm on the shortlist for the job here too, the one I *really* want. I could walk to work in 20 minutes if I got that. IF. I hate this juggly juggly business.

Mädchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:13 (twenty years ago)

Was that a long time ago? I can't remember. Also, I dunno which cafe you're talking about!

Hope all the job stuff works out.

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 16:26 (twenty years ago)

x-post Yeah the juggly juggly business when I was being interviewed for jobs in Edinburgh and Glasgow on the same day was a bit awkward, but it was fairly clear which one I'd take given the chance so no-one was surprised, shocked or offended at the juggly juggly stuff. Actually I just like writing juggly juggly because it makes me think of b00bs for some reason. Actually I think I can only afford to admit how much I hate the commute BECAUSE I don't have to do it for much longer, if I had another oo years of it I couldn't acknowledge this without losing my sanity...

alext (alext), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

alex, you talking about "juggly juggly" makes me think of that moment on the dancefloor at ATP three (four?) years ago, when you emerged from the vodka mist to the delicate strains of "where's your head at", performed an obscene dance with your shirt, stuck your tongue out, then disappeared for six hours before coming back to the chalet with an empty bottle of brasso and sick all over your shoes.

and, you know, i feel kinda traumatised now.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Hey, we're all going to ATP this year... It's S1mon McCru66en's thirtieth and he's having it there!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 29 November 2005 17:22 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, the first year we decide not to go, everyone else does. :-(

alext (alext), Wednesday, 30 November 2005 07:53 (twenty years ago)

I was planning on going until Banhart got involved.

hmmm (hmmm), Friday, 2 December 2005 13:05 (twenty years ago)

Doesn't bother me really. I don't plan to see any bands. I don't know which one we're going to, but I hope it's Mudhoney, so at least you can be sure all the legal work will be completed properly.

KeefW., Saturday, 3 December 2005 10:53 (twenty years ago)

Wooh! FAP ahoy! Revive.

alext (alext), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 09:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm not going to be staying that long unfortunately as i have to be in Newington by about 5.45. My brother's dog can't be left for long, apparently he chewed through his digibox yesterday.

leigh (leigh), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 09:40 (twenty years ago)

The dog has a digibox?

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

I will not be able to make Saturday I'm afraid as a friend is having an xmas party in Glasgow.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

o, bugger and boo. tits. i was going to suggest we got pissed on the train through.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 18:47 (twenty years ago)

Fancy a pint ahoy!

KeefW (kmw), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:05 (twenty years ago)

I might be going to HERE on thursday tho.

hmmm (hmmm), Tuesday, 6 December 2005 19:27 (twenty years ago)

I'm on leave tomorrow and won't have internet access so can we confirm what the FAP arrangements are?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 December 2005 10:55 (twenty years ago)

yes, that would be helpful. kay's bar ... from when?

keith?

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 December 2005 13:16 (twenty years ago)

Well it was going to be 3pm -- if we want to meet earlier we could spend more time with Leigh before it becomes me, keith and grimly by the sound of it. I'm easy, I have only boring other things to do that day.

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:11 (twenty years ago)

i mentioned it to a t h o l e as well: i'll give him another call. and chris too, if nobody has any objections.

tom, perversely, is going to be in glasgow that day.

i was planning on being there for 4pm: any earlier will be a little difficult.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:14 (twenty years ago)

Dude isn't the point that ILXors aren't scared off by all yr m8s? Isn't this FIRST EVER ILX EDINBURGH meet up not 'Simon comes through to Edinburgh for the first time in 30 years' day ;-)But bring it on, I suppose. Maybe we could go on somewhere later anyway.

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:24 (twenty years ago)

Well i'll aim to be there at 3. If i leave just before 5 i should be up in Newington in time to ensure that the pampered pooch isn't left on his own to chew the house to pieces.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:32 (twenty years ago)

Cool.

Is anyone else actually coming? Oi lurkers speak up now!!!

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:37 (twenty years ago)

isn't the point that ILXors aren't scared off by all yr m8s

er but er if it's just you, me and keith then, umm ... well, it's more a potterrow reunion than an ILX FAP :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:47 (twenty years ago)

Oh no!!

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 14:58 (twenty years ago)

I was a regular at potterrow from 91 till 94. Were you all on the committee?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:14 (twenty years ago)

NO. no. no, i wasn't.

was i?

no. i was going to join but didn't.

keith was :)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:18 (twenty years ago)

I wasn't a regular. Ever. I went a bit between 95-7. Occasionally. If forced. I never staggered up drunk and unable to speak only to be let in by two committee members going 'we think he's a mate of [grimly fiendish]'s.

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:21 (twenty years ago)

We used to suffer the indignity of asking passing students to sign us in cos we were still at school. Later on we became known and used to get waved in.

I might be in here briefly tomorrow, i'm expecting a package containing this http://www.guardian.co.uk/theguide/books/story/0,14684,1464976,00.html
and this http://www.plexifilm.com/sheffield.html and don't want to leave it sitting in the office over the weekend. It all depends on whether or not the cooker intallers from C***t arrive. I waited in all last Friday only to find out that they had me pencilled in for this week rather than last.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:27 (twenty years ago)

edingay more like

retarded and gay (bato), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:28 (twenty years ago)

I'd like to come along but can't do Saturday afternoon. I've got family commitments I can't get out of.
Is everybody on this thread ex-Edinburgh Uni?
I was a student 92-95, and now I work for the University.

Greig (treefell), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:36 (twenty years ago)

I was never a student at Edinburgh, just an indie kid townie that liked the cheap drink and the top tunes at Bubblegum/Roadrunner (or was it rollercoaster, i forget).

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:53 (twenty years ago)

Ditto, never a student but wanted cheap booze at Potter Row, and later, Chamber Street.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:55 (twenty years ago)

I'm 93-97, and 98-01, and starting employment at Ed Uni on 01.01.06. Hurray! Clearly I can't stay away from the place.

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 15:56 (twenty years ago)

Just to confirm, Jamaica Street Lane is at the bottom of Howe Street, just before the opening for St Stephen Street?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:01 (twenty years ago)

I had a boyfriend who went to Edinburgh Uni in 1995 and used to go through at the weekends and drag his non-indie ass along to Potterrow so I could dance to Bis and Pulp and stuff. Unfortunately I have the death lurgey and no money and a football match to go to in Glasgow on Saturday, or I would have been up for a wrong-end-of-the-M8 FAP.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:09 (twenty years ago)

Not the bottom of Howe St: going down Howe St, it's the first turning on the left after Howe St crosses Heriot Row. It's a bit of a (mews)maze back there but I think you take the left hand fork of Jamaica St.

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:20 (twenty years ago)

where is a nice and not overly expenseive place to have sunday lunch in edinburgh?

barbarian cities (jaybob3005), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:23 (twenty years ago)

Hopefully i won't get too lost. Jenners do lovely roasts on a Sunday, i was in last Sunday and had a yummy plate of macaroni cheese.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:31 (twenty years ago)

We often go to Howies, on Howe street. But if by Sunday lunch you mean 'roast meat and veg' I have no idea.

alext (alext), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:33 (twenty years ago)

mm. that looks nice. will try that, cheers.

barbarian cities (jaybob3005), Thursday, 8 December 2005 16:38 (twenty years ago)

Potterrow so I could dance to Bis and Pulp and stuff

Bis: blame Neil (hmmm).

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:23 (twenty years ago)

I clearly remember when "School Disco" came out I was through in Edinburgh and we went to Potterrow and I was so stupidly excited at hearing the crappy little 7" single that I'd bought the week before actually being played in public and people were dancing to it somewhere that wasn't Glasgow.

I'd like to kid on that I was young and stupid then, but I was about 23.

ailsa (ailsa), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:26 (twenty years ago)

It was Roadrunner, Leigh.. I think Keiron had a brief thing called Rollercoaster around the time of the Rollercoaster concerts as I remember.

Yeah, I was at Edinburgh uni 91-95. I was on the Potterrow committee too, though not at first, though I knew them all. Can't remember when I was on it, maybe 94/95 or so.

Potter Row, and later, Chamber Street.

Let's rock!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:28 (twenty years ago)

t0m gr0d0n and i got physically thrown out of chambers street after drinking ourselves stupid, attempting to play pool, and then deciding it would be more fun to run around hitting each other with pool cues.

a couple of weeks later, it was closed.

COINCIDENCE? I THINK NOT. mwahahahah.

(actually, it was coincidence. but hey.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

It was closed because heavy metal is rubbish.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:38 (twenty years ago)

keith, on saturday i am going to use my boot to unleash THE MIGHTY POWER OF ROCK in the general direction of your testicles.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:48 (twenty years ago)

Listen... Rock is a different matter entirely. My testicles are made of 100% solid Tommy Vance-style rock.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:52 (twenty years ago)

but TEH METAL and TEH ROCK are BLOOD BROTHERS, keith!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 8 December 2005 18:54 (twenty years ago)

What's this "TEH" stuff? Speak like a grown up!

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

Anyway, metal and rock are not blood brothers in my tiny little brain.

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:09 (twenty years ago)

See, this is heavy metal, it even says it:

http://www.heavymetalbrasil.com.br/fotos/promopics/stryper.gif

This is rock:

KeefW (kmw), Thursday, 8 December 2005 19:20 (twenty years ago)

Blimey, that's the tone lowered.

alext (alext), Friday, 9 December 2005 13:04 (twenty years ago)

My brother is at Edinburgh uni and I am off to visit him right now.

BARMS, Friday, 9 December 2005 13:28 (twenty years ago)

come FAPing tomorrow, then!!!

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 9 December 2005 13:56 (twenty years ago)

(i genuinely didn't mean to post three exclamation marks there.)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 9 December 2005 13:57 (twenty years ago)

hurrah for beer.

and, er, two portions of steak and chips.

each.

leigh: lovely to meet you. next time, stay longer. otherwise, it seems, we become uncivilised.

what did i miss after i left? i bumped into three lovely (and whammed) colleagues on the train home but resisted the tempation to drink more in glasgow. 'rah.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Sunday, 11 December 2005 14:56 (twenty years ago)

We went to the Star Bar for another, but by that point our aging frames and revoltingly stuffed guts were telling us it was definitely time for bed.

Yeah, two meals is definitely a bad idea. Or a genius idea, one or the other.

Was a great day/night, though. Lovely to meet you too, Leigh, and Tom, but I guess he doesn't read this board. Smart chap.

KeefW (kmw), Sunday, 11 December 2005 17:52 (twenty years ago)

Steak and chips certainly sounds better than the coronation chicken sandwich i ended up having for tea at my mum's. In spite of being stone cold sober i still managed to trip over the dog and fall arse over tit onto the(very hard) parquet floor.

Is anyone going to the TV21 gig at the citrus club on 3rd March. Jo Callis is doing a dj set, don't think i trust myself not to go up to him and ask daft questions about synth sounds on dare.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:13 (twenty years ago)

I do actually really like edinburgh

I have fallen out of love, w/ glasgow, a little, lately, though

RJG (RJG), Thursday, 23 February 2006 11:30 (twenty years ago)

Josef K videos, including "Chance Meeting", which takes in just about every Edinburgh landmark you can think of!

Momus (Momus), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:30 (twenty years ago)

TV21? Is that TV21 from the early '80s re-formed? Surely not?

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:31 (twenty years ago)

Yep, they reformed for a gig on john peel day and are playing another on 3/3.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:52 (twenty years ago)

Cripes! I was talking to my brother about them the other day, he has held on to a really nice original poster of theirs, from the first time round.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 23 February 2006 12:59 (twenty years ago)

There's lots of new posters kicking about. I'd never heard of them but spotted a poster and thought that sounded like a human league mk1 kind of thing. That was before i spotted jo callis' name lower down. Was TV21 not a gerry anderson programme?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 23 February 2006 13:34 (twenty years ago)

i've worked on a couple of newspaper/magazine-y projects with one of the blokes from TV21, who is now a hugely respected designer. i never knew the band was so, er, popular ;)

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Thursday, 23 February 2006 13:52 (twenty years ago)

There was a picture of Jo Callis on Kevin Williamson's blog from the last gig, the years have actually been quite kind to him.

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 23 February 2006 13:58 (twenty years ago)

TV21 = name of the G. Anderson production company, also of the Thunderbirds (etc) comic and that. My brother was a big fan back in the early 80s and so I got to rather like them too.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:05 (twenty years ago)

Were they kind of like the rezillos?

leigh (leigh), Thursday, 23 February 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

No, they were more in a hard-edged Teardrop Explodes sort of vein, as I recall. I don't suppose I've heard any of their music since the nineteen-eighties.

Tim (Tim), Thursday, 23 February 2006 15:11 (twenty years ago)

this is from allmediascotland. you'll have to forgive their spectacular inability to use commas/construct sentences/etc:

Changes taking place, mainly behind the scenes, at The Scotsman Publications Ltd, since the recent takeover of the group by Johnston Press, is to see newspaper designers, Ally Palmer and Terry Watson, being let go.
Johnston have decided not to renew their retainer.
The pair have been busy these last two years on The Scotsman’s switch to compact format, plus on redesigns at both Scotland on Sunday and the Edinburgh Evening News.
They’ve also been working around the world, including on a redesign of Le Monde, in France.
But for Palmer, it might free up time to return to playing guitar for TV21, the band that famously split up, in May 24 years ago, backstage at Edinburgh Playhouse, just three nights into supporting the Rolling Stones on their European tour.
But they’re playing again - as reported recently on Spike - at Edinburgh’s Citrus Club, next Friday.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Friday, 24 February 2006 11:59 (twenty years ago)

I work beside a guy in TV21, I think.

Greig (treefell), Friday, 24 February 2006 14:07 (twenty years ago)

Last month at the Belle and Sebastian gig, we were talking with Keef about resurrecting the concept of the Phil-Collins-at-Live-Aid FAP, that being two different cities on the same day (with additional drinking on the train inbetween, probably).

Can we make this happen please?

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:32 (twenty years ago)

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:50 (twenty years ago)

Terrific idea - although we'd have to make sure we get an off-peak train, other wise it'll cost over £17!!!

Definitely need to get some FAP action going on asap. To the Try Glasgow More thread!

stew!, Friday, 24 February 2006 18:51 (twenty years ago)

£1 bus, innit, and wine poured into Ribena bottles/Barr's cola bottled topped up with vodka. I've been trying to get FAP action going on both the Try Glasgow More thread and the Scottish football predictions thread, but everyone's ignoring me.

ailsa (ailsa), Friday, 24 February 2006 18:55 (twenty years ago)

i'm not! i'm just a bit skint. especially after handing over £250 the other day to get my car fixed. ahem. that roundabout was fundamentally flawed in design and concept, i tell you.

greatest performance arts theatre festival in the world. Your enjoyment will vary according to your tolerance of white-face mimes. But come and see us, change your luck . . etc, etc.

soukesian, Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:22 (twenty years ago)

edinburgh in august can be a wonderful experience, but it isn't like edinburgh the other 11 months of the year.

grimly fiendish (grimlord), Saturday, 25 February 2006 01:59 (twenty years ago)

My friend, who does this theatre thing, is interested in the fringiness. And the last major piece he did, which I was a part of, was based on the Burke & Hare murders (although it was more like a museum than "Burke & Hare: The Musical") and so there was a lot of Edinburgh in it. So part of the point of the trip would be ongoing research (we're hoping to remount it in someplace other than Portland), and part would be seeing the fringe fest.

But really most of why I would be going is that I've never been out of North America, and Edinburgh seems nice. I mean I'm sure I'd also visit London and meet people but Edinburgh sounds far more interesting.

cog, Monday, 14 October 2013 15:21 (twelve years ago)

If you're not looking for a specific area in Edinburgh, I can recommend a random pile of restaurants about town. "Passorn" on Brougham place has awesome Thai, and for french food I would recommend "Chez Jules" on Hanover Street and "Pierre Victoire" on Eyre place - both owned by the same people, but Pierre Victoire is a bit better in my opinion. "Viva Mexico" on Cockburn Street does good Mexican and "Cafe Andaluz" on George Street does good Tapas. "First Coast" on Dalry Road always has a weird but great selection of bistro kinda good. "Karen's Unicorn" - there's two; one on Abercromby Place and one on St Stephen's Street (the latter might be closed - has been the last couple of times I've wandered past) is amazing Chinese. If you're with crazy vegetarians, the food in "David Bann" on St Mary's Street is pretty amazing in spite of the lack of animal protein. "The Vintage", down Henderson Street in Leith, does good pub food (and great beer). "Pho Vietnam House" on Morrison Street, is supposed to be really good too - I haven't got round to going there yet, but it's on my list after visiting Vietnam. Oh, and "Shamoli" on the Royal mile does great Indian/Thai too.

Of course, all that is 'food I like to eat in Edinburgh'. If you're a tourist and looking for Scottish food, I'm probably not much use.

Been trying a few over the week.

Best place by far is called "The Sicilian" on Union St, the penne chorizo was outstanding - great mix of olive oil and properly cooked tomotoes. Garlic bread as a side had the kind of bread that could turn me into a rockist about it. Cannolo Siciliano for desert.

The meal actually improved my mood.

Heading up to Edinburgh for the first time in ages next month. Will eat at Café St Honore and Ondine because that's just where I always eat when I'm there, and I'll try out the Gardeners Cottage for the first time (anyone on here been?) - would be good to get recommendations for pubs/bars that have opened in the last couple of years and are worth a visit? I'll be staying near the National Library but will be schlepping about all over the place I'd imagine.

Bluerapa Thai near Haymarket is a really nice family-run restaurant that I end up going to quite a bit. Very nice chicken curries.

Bookshops have been disappointing thus far: The Edinburgh bookshop on Bruntsfield Place didn't have quite the selection, whcih I hate saying as the staff are friendly.

otoh I paid a visit to the Edinburgh Iyengar yoga centre just down the road - beautiful building and yoga is always good. Going to a basic class once a week for the next little while. The intermediate classes are earlier in the evening this term, which is the only downside.

Bruntsfield has some nice coffee shops, and this italian ice cream shop - will be investigating more over the next couple of weeks.

Things just haven't been at their best at all however I think we are about to turn a corner here so I hope I can revive the glasgow thread and visit in the next week or two.

xyzzzz__, Monday, 20 July 2015 10:25 (ten years ago)

This week's discovery - the two vietnamese places I've been going to around Haymarket are owned by mother and daughter. Thought there was a link as both have the same types of paintings - all by the mother, which just fill up both restaurants.

The Italian ice cream shop is good, think I'm going back there tonight. Might have a shed load of ice cream for 'dinner' instead of actual food.

L'escargot Blanc on Queensferry street is excellent French cuisine with the best Creme Brulee I am likely to ever have outside of France.

Bar Italia on Lothian also outstanding on the pasta front (gotta say I avoided it for a while as I dismiss anything that is called Bar Italia as a tourist-trap but a colleague recommended it). Has excellent ice creams too.

Edinburgh film house is great, also on Lothian.

And that is the end of Edinburgh for me.

there's an 18thC portrait in the gallery that's the spit of someone i went to school with. doppelganger. it was very unnerving when i saw it. reminded me of the beginning of John Dickson Carr's The Burning Court:

Fastened to the page was an old but still very clear photograph of a woman. Under it in small neat letters had been printed: Marie D’Aubray: Guillotined for Murder, 1861. He was looking at a photograph of his own wife.

Other irregular dance all night club nights (10pm-3am usually) that are grand: Stacks (soul/Motown/Northern Soul), Unpop (jangle pop/twee/C86), The Egg (Rock 'n' Roll, Garage, New Wave, Psychedelia,Soul and Punk) and Mjolk (Scandi Pop).

Keep an eye on the Wee Red Bar https://www.weeredbar.co.uk/listings.htm at the Art School and Henry's Cellar Bar https://www.facebook.com/Henryscellarbar/ for some more alternative stuff.

You're also not far from the best pizza in Edinburgh - Pizzeria 1926 - Napoli style pizza at phenomenal value.

Oh and I have to say since you're in Gorgie check out Hearts if you like football and have no Scottish football allegiances. Great stadium and it looks like it will be a great wee season for us (we will definitely fall apart by mid-October).

I should note Stacks and Unpop have been fairly dead for a while but I think revives were round the corner?

great, thanks! will keep an eye on all of these.

yeah we're right next to tynecastle. my childhood / hereditary scottish football allegiances are to rangers, so i'll be happy to ditch that and pretend i'm a lifelong jambo.

tbh glasgow is dying on it's arse right now with the abc and art school closure, due to fire, the arches closed due to council incompetence. you're better off where you are with access to Summerhall.

I've been to Edinburgh once, about ten years ago, and it was one of the best holidays I ever had. It was actually in late February and as I was riding the shuttle into town from the airport, the haze and fog completely dissolved in the sun and it was gorgeous. Even on the weekdays, people took their lunch breaks outside, filling a big lawn in the middle of the city. I remember telling someone at a Boots counter how beautiful everything looked outside and she laughed and said "it's usually not like this in February!"

birdistheword, Wednesday, 14 August 2024 22:29 (one year ago)

Deep abiding affection for Edinburgh, not least because my first visit was when I was 9 years old and the whole place seemed kind of magical to me. I've been back several times since — most recently to bring my own kids, about 7 years ago — and have always loved it. But I feel bad that I've never been to Glasgow, so I'll pencil that in for whenever my next Scottish sojourn is.

Blitz Primary (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 14 August 2024 22:47 (one year ago)

Edinburgh is one of the most beautiful cities on the planet. I spent the first 18 years of my life there and thre is so much to love and of course at this time of the year, during the festival it is absolutely electric.

it does feel like a town compared to how Glasgow truly feels like a city. Glasgow is undoubtedly culturally superior for 49 weeks of the year but the rivalry between the cities is really quite daft.

stirmonster, Thursday, 15 August 2024 01:32 (one year ago)

it is often said that anyone from anywhere in the world who spends 24 hours in Glasgow is fully entitled to call themselves a Glaswegian, with a caveat that if you were born in Edinburgh you will never qualify as a Glaswegian. I can testify this is true and my Glaswegian wife never lets me forget it!

stirmonster, Thursday, 15 August 2024 01:35 (one year ago)

Was there for a few days in April and was absolutely delighted the entire time, kid me was overjoyed by the winding streets, castle, and ice cream trucks everywhere

The Water of Leith walkway was beautiful - I was very envious of everyone that had a house with a backyard that sloped down to the waterway.

birdistheword, Thursday, 15 August 2024 05:51 (one year ago)

I realise I've become settled in here when my immediate response is "Oh Jesus no, don't come in August, it'll be overrun with the English - oh, sorry dog latin". Also sorry, dog latin - I'd love to come out for a pint usually but this month I'm either working or knackered.

I did raise an eyebrow at "undoubtedly culturally superior" - it's not like they deflate the Usher Hall at the end of August. Now gigs, absolutely - Jen's from Perth, which is equidistant travelwise* from Glasgow and I asked her if she'd been through to Edinburgh for bands when she was growing up, and she said no, basically never. If someone's only playing one gig in Scotland, it'll never be in Edinburgh unless they're Murrayfield-sized.

It definitely feels like a city to me, because my default city is Dublin, and it feels a lot more like Dublin than Glasgow does.

*it doesn't look like it! But the train from Edinburgh to Perth stops at every house in Fife and asks if anyone wants something got for them.

Andrew Farrell, Friday, 16 August 2024 00:30 (one year ago)

I grew up in Fife and for a while there was a really healthy gig scene in Edinburgh. Not as busy as Glasgow but you could see an interesting band somewhere on a regular basis (even if you'd frequently miss the encore because the last train home to Fife is always stupid early)
Then all the venues started being developed so the owners could make more money out of the property. If that didn't happen there would be some kind of mysterious fire (I can remember at least three places that were closed due to fires)
Anyone who tried to start up a venue that could cater to more than 100 people in town found that there was no realistic way to comply with noise regulations
The only places left in the city centre that cater to live music are pubs, the Queen's Hall, Summerhall, Usher Hall and very occasionally the Playhouse. There has been an uptick of activity at the corn exchange since it's been rebranded as an O2 venue but it's in the middle of nowhere

We almost never went to Glasgow for gigs unless someone had access to a car because of the lack of 'late' night public transport back to Fife

I've lived in both Edinburgh and Glasgow and the rivalry between the cities is intensely stupid. Especially when people from either place 'joke' about avoiding the other city. They are both great places to spend time in with loads of things to see and do. They have different strengths but that's about it

On the Perth train - it used to be an express train only stopping at Kirkcaldy and Inverkeithing before Haymarket. Then Scotrail decided to start running their service on overtime rather than recruiting staff and suddenly the Fife circle services went away or became very unreliable. Scotrail legally have to provide a service to the smaller towns so the Dundee and Perth trains suddenly started stopping everywhere but North Queensferry and Dalmeny.

There's also no equivalent to the GFT in Edinburgh or arthouse cinemas in Edinburgh I believe? But yes, it's mostly interesting gigs Edinburgh has a dearth of.

Defund Phil Collins (Tom D.), Friday, 16 August 2024 06:13 (one year ago)

There was the Filmhouse. Which is trying to reopen. The Cameo also shows a more arthouse inclined slate of films. The GFT is wonderful

If someone's only playing one gig in Scotland, it'll never be in Edinburgh unless they're Murrayfield-sized.

I've noticed over the last few years that there's been a good number of acts who have done their Scotland stop at the Usher Hall. A few that spring to mind from my personal radar...

Beck 2021
The Smile 2022
Wilco 2023
Beth Gibbons 2024
Bob Dylan 2024

Some of these stopped in Glasgow on the previous or subsequent tour though, so seems like they were consciously alternating cities.

Ha ha! i was trying to be a touch arch with that comment. both cities are culturally rich.

As far as music goes, I was blessed to grow up in Edinburgh at a time when it was awash with great gig venues and one was spoiled rotten with gig choices.
