The notion of a machine that runs on souls is kinda classic, really.

The container is kinda like the tubes you send yr money in to the drive-up window at the bank. Can you imagine a drive-up abortion clinic, where the fetuses are sent in like @ the bank? The concept has promise, gentlemen.

The G-dcrack strip is awesome. I love especially the blurriness around the viewer/presumed recipient of said G-dcrack.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 18 February 2008 03:35 (eighteen years ago)

Revised cover sketch-

http://www.faithmouse.com/i_aborto_cover.jpg

Faith has 'SuperGifts' (of the Spirit) now, and 'G-dCracking' is one manifestation. 'G-d' because some very fundamentalist Christians avoid writing the full name because they believe to do so is disrespectful.

I've heard of Jon Springer but haven't met him-thanks for the web address. From what I've read of his reviews I don't think he's perceived by critics as being anti-Gay.

That Baghdad photo (which seems to be gone now) was taken by a fan of the cartoon while he was stationed in Iraq as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot. I drew a cartoon a few years ago based on that photo.

A condom themed comic would be cool. I'd like to have Obama as the focus of the next comic, and have Faith discover that he's actually a sleeper agent for Al-Qaeda.

If anyone wants to snark and post here that's fine with me. Thanks to Libcrypt for creating the thread.

Dan Lacey, Monday, 18 February 2008 05:51 (eighteen years ago)

G-DCRACK indeed.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 18 February 2008 08:44 (eighteen years ago)

Dan, what's your view on contraception?

Mark C, Monday, 18 February 2008 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

(as opposed to your public persona's view or your characters' view)

Mark C, Monday, 18 February 2008 11:46 (eighteen years ago)

I believe God creates souls pre-contraception (the 'before your Mother carried you in her womb, I knew you' scripture) and the physical world we live in is His expression. As for doctrinally carrying that out, I have a traditional Catholic viewpoint, which I pretty much warp and destroy in my cartoons just because artistically I can't help myself. Politically I think I've been sort of wandering to the middle over the course of the past few years.

B.) Holy Spirit urinating on fetus?
C.) "If He loves furries, He'll love you!"

I have a lot of hope for this thread.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

A condom themed comic would be cool. I'd like to have Obama as the focus of the next comic, and have Faith discover that he's actually a sleeper agent for Al-Qaeda.

I'm still trying to figure out why these two sentences are in the same paragraph together.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 18 February 2008 20:12 (eighteen years ago)

The pre-conception thing is weird though. I guess you could have half a soul in a sperm and half in an egg? But unless the meeting of the two was predestined (and if I understand catholicism that's not how it works) then you'd only have two half souls. Either way, this can't be feasible because why would God create 100 million redundant souls for every one that successfully bcreates?

By extension, then, if the soul is abstract or external to the gametes, then the actual sperms and eggs are soul-free and therefore as disposable as they clearly are in both sexes.

Dan Lacey, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 23:18 (seventeen years ago)

dan lacey what are your top 5 most important political issues?

and what, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 23:20 (seventeen years ago)

I've been trying to care. I'm not much motivated by politics anymore, mainly because I see neglect everywhere. 'Hot issues' run for a while as fads and then nothing gets accomplished; I've been trying to get off of that stupid train.

As a partial answer I would say life issues, if anything. Euthanasia still interests me, as does cloning. Renewable energy; if we had advanced solar capacity it would solve many of our domestic and defense related problems.

I'm more interested in why people care about certain issues, particularly as seen through the lens of faith and sexual motivation.

Dan Lacey, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

what are your religious beliefs? are you against euthanasia because you believe it takes a life provided by god?

and what, Wednesday, 12 March 2008 23:54 (seventeen years ago)

That's a good question.

I've sort of had a falling out with God as of late, so I'm not really advocating anything except doing good, or trying to do good.

There are still too many cases of people 'coming back' after all hope was gone, so I would err on the side of caution. But as for moral absolutes; except for a few cases I've lost my enthusiasm.

Dan Lacey, Thursday, 13 March 2008 00:03 (seventeen years ago)

Hell, even a Google text search wasn't worth it:

Pleasant Plains, Thursday, 20 March 2008 20:35 (seventeen years ago)

Dan, I hate to be all frenchy pedantic here, but the 'e' at the end of petite makes it a feminine adjective. Petit is the proper spelling and p'tit is "li'l".

Michael White, Thursday, 20 March 2008 20:41 (seventeen years ago)

Well, let's get it right. Drop the 'e' and what do you suggest with 'p'tit is "li'l"?'

Dan Lacey, Thursday, 20 March 2008 20:48 (seventeen years ago)

If she's going to call someone 'bonhomme', she's quite likely to say 'p'tit' instead of 'petit'. It's kind of idiomatic, is what I'm saying.

Pic showing penciling and inking for the finished 'bicycle' cartoon. Sometimes I'll isolate different elements to layers in Photoshop and then move them around to get what I want, but I also draw and scan cartoons 'whole' as well.

I started using red markers a few years ago when my local art store was out of black. I never really know what a finished cartoon will look like until late in the process. Also, cartoons don't look that great in red so I really have to try harder to get a better looking product.

For my sketches I'll try to draw upsidedown as much as possible, which forces you to copy what's really there instead of just recording presumptions.

Tried a tablet once but it didn't really work for me.

I'm going to try to continue the cartoon as a painting project; just painting the cartoons I can't find time to draw and then posting them for sale. I'm asking $100 a painting (16 by 20 inches on stretched canvas) 25 for the shipping. Finished portraits like the McCain or Obama are more because of the time involved in having (needing) to get an adequate likeness.

I've immediately sold both cartoon paintings so far. Another idea I have to keep the cartoon going and to find a way to pay for it, so maybe I'm on to something.

I actually paint these in the front lobby of a local racetrack.

problems with the double hamburger theory:

-no extra toppings
-thin layer of beef, could be pre-made/frozen
-extra layer of bread seems like an insult to self-respecting dbl burgermen

so its clearly pancakes then

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 05:25 (seventeen years ago)

Outsider art, absolutely. I'm a big Darger fan.

I think my paintings are outright Kitsch. I wouldn't even say they're sophisticated enough to be considered Lowbrow. The cartoons are in a different category.

Dan Lacey, Sunday, 31 August 2008 05:37 (seventeen years ago)

what is meant by the pancake on top of the head

is it a symbolic representation of the flattening of the personal id by the steamroller of the american ego

i dont know what id or ego mean btw just wondering

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 05:40 (seventeen years ago)

Are you familiar at all with Daniel Johnston? I guess the comparison is fairly superficial, but he does sort of seem to have a similar mix of cartoonishness, fundamentalist religiosity and obscenity.

i fuck mathematics, Sunday, 31 August 2008 05:47 (seventeen years ago)

you could say that again

deeznuts, Sunday, 31 August 2008 05:48 (seventeen years ago)

I've heard of him.

Dan Lacey, Sunday, 31 August 2008 05:59 (seventeen years ago)

You are absolutely nuts, mathematics, and wrong. Daniel Johnston has virtually nothing in common with Dan Lacey. DJ is a high-functioning retard, sadly over-exploited for the amusement of hipsters worldwide. Lacey, on the other hand, is extremely intelligent and amazingly talented. While his politics may not be 100% in line with hipster ideology today, it's impossible to pigeonhole him as a claw-fisted savant, incapable of realistically engaging modern culture. Dan's art is complex, whimsical, topical, and generally amazing. "Daniel Johnston" ought occur in no discussion of Dan Lacey.

I'm sorely tempted to commission you to paint a portrait of our dog; maybe one with me my girl and my dog with pancakes on our heads. What would you run for that?

As if an entire blog dedicated to "an exploration of the graphics and graffiti in support of Barack Obama" wasn't unnecessary enough, the latest entry is a painting of a nude Obama riding a unicorn done by an artist who "who normally paints photos of people with pancakes on their heads." I'm sure the Committee for the Preservation of the White House will have a tough time deciding whether that will match the decor better in the Lincoln Sitting Room or the Treaty Room...

Running out of ideas has never been a problem; just deciding which ones to develop. People are enthusiastic about the Obama unicorns, and I don't mind painting them, so I'll just continue until I get bored.

Dan Lacey, Tuesday, 20 January 2009 23:09 (seventeen years ago)

Love the nice, big hi-res pix. Really helps get across the feel: paint handling, texture, etc. Armband is a nice touch. Does it have special properties, or is it just an armband? Plus horse coat is genius! All the Obama nudes are excellent, but I especially love the planecrash one from a couple days back. Geese in the engines, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Rushmore, ghost of windshield strut showing thru may be an error but it totally saves the composition. Looks freaking GREAT. Plus topical and so damn fast!

You should do at least one super-detailed Unicorn mounted Obama nude as a project piece, to commemorate of otherwise observe the moment. History will be glad you did.

I'd rather draw Faithmouse than paint. Maybe good things will happen for the cartoon as a result of all the publicity for the paintings.

Also, I agree-Obama's face looks a little too Jack Webby, so I'm giving him a repainting.

Dan Lacey, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:02 (seventeen years ago)

Dan, are you going to keep faithmouse as a more-or-less single panel thing, or do you want to expand out to a full strip or even a full/mini comic?

If nothing else, I would submit some of your pop star/celeb caricature drawing work to Mad & Cracked, see what they say.

kingfish, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:36 (seventeen years ago)

I submitted both the celeb toons and Faithmouse to Mad during the past few years. Cracked folded as a magazine, but I sent them cartoons online anyway. The way I see it, if I can get a fair price for the paintings it should buy time to draw more cartoons.

I'm still drawing both single panel toons and also trying to commit myself time-wise to the adult side of the feature-

There’s a reason I became disgusted by ‘my own side’ and bailed on my Christian/Conservative apologetic-it was because of asshats such as yourself who scream ‘liberty’ but strive to create less freedom in this country instead of more; it caused me to question who I was fighting for. You guys lost me big time. Yes, I paint and draw mouse porn, not to ‘push back the boundaries of what is acceptable in society’ but because it amuses the hell out of me. If you don’t like it, suck on it.

TAINT

Why don't we liaise
My nets will part
Revealing a window that's only for you

Why can't we relax
Don't mind the mess dear
I toyed with Obama for something to do (Toyed...sex toy... a terrible joke!)

Even my redeemer is resting (Redeemer = Obama)
I carry
The weight of the world (Reference to Taint cartoon where she carries a limp Obama over her shoulder)

Expectations, frustrations
No conference, no glory
Just dark rooms and juices
Resentment and stories

Seems their armies will march for the mice (Soldiers = penises)
It's time to raise my price (Ref to 'Catholic Harlot' cartoon)

Why don't you confess
I hear repentance
Arouses, asphyxiation for the soul

Why do I digress
My work's not over
Til green faces smile from beneath soiled springs

Surely what's left hear is mine (foetuses)
To dispose of as I like
True no treaty abides
For that little sacrifice (Disposal of aborted foetuses)
But you know battlegrounds
Lie wherever killing's found (I'm a feminist :P )

Birther Queen: Obama Persecuting Me with Placenta Painting!
— By Stephanie Mencimer| Tue May. 18, 2010 3:00 AM PDT

Orly Taitz, the queen bee of the birther movement, sounds distraught. “I’m going through hell,” she says. The California dentist-lawyer had called to tell me about what she says is a campaign to scare her family so that she’ll abandon her quest to become California’s next Secretary of State. She says she’s endured death threats and an attempt to tamper with her car. But this time, she says, her opponents have gone too far. The final straw? An elaborate oil painting of a nude Taitz, legs splayed, giving birth to… a pancake...

Orly Taitz to Subpoena Pancake Painter

— By Stephanie Mencimer
| Wed Jun. 9, 2010 4:00 AM PDT

Just because she's spent the past few months campaigning to become California's next secretary of state doesn't mean that "birther" queen Dr. Orly Taitz has given up her many court battles seeking to prove that President Barack Obama is not an American citizen. On May 19, Taitz filed a "motion to reconsider" in her mostly failed lawsuit against Obama in DC federal court. And one basis for the motion was none other than a Mother Jones article! Yes, Taitz told the court that she has discovered new evidence of "intimidation and harassment" against her in my story on Dan Lacey, the Minnesota "Painter of Pancakes," who has painted some nude portraits of Taitz giving birth to a pancake.

Taitz told me in May that her opponents have sent copies of the painting to her children and family along with threatening emails in what she believes was an attempt to scare her into dropping her insurgent campaign to be the GOP's candidate for California's secretary of state. She suspects that one of Obama's powerful allies commissioned the painting. I asked Lacey about that and he was cagey on the subject. So Taitz wants to subpoena him to force him to out his benefactor. She writes:

"Recent article by Washington burro (sic) correspondent Stephanie Mencimer shows that “artist” Dan Lacey, who painted despicable art work series “Birther Orly Taitz”, showing Taitz nude, with her legs spread, giving birth and holding bloody placenta, which were sent to her children, posted on the Internet and a local paper, did not work on his own accord. Dan Lacey admitted, that he was commissioned, paid by someone to do this, it was a clear attempt to intimidate Taitz and pressure her to withdraw as a candidate...Lacey refused to provide the reporter Stephanie Mencimer with the name of the person who hired him, who paid him, however during the depositions and upon subpoena this information will be available and will be provided to the court. At this time Taitz cannot state with certainty who paid Dan Lacey, however it is common knowledge, that Billionaire George Soros, one of the biggest backers of Obama, through his organization Moveon.org, has commissioned numerous artists to promote Obama and denigrate his opponents and critics."

Lacey, for his part, has responded with a YouTube video in which he promises to reveal the identity of the "puppetmaster" behind the Pancake Birther series, pixel by pixel, as part of his new legal defense fundraising. He promises to enter the name of anyone who donates $2.37 to the defense fund into a drawing to win the new painting, which will be awarded at a "Colors of Orly" art show fundraiser in Minneapolis on July 4th.

I just received this email - Mr. Lacey, I am a former Wall Street trader, now an unemployed streetcar mechanic addicted to SlimJims and sprawled out on the floor of a squalid flophouse somewhere in Columbus, Ohio. I saw your 'Occupy Wall Street Bank Skull Pancake Painting' on my expensive antiquated cellphone and immediately sneered at it. But then while contemplating the image I felt the building shake to its foundations and a small plane full of money crashed suddenly into the room. I can't say that the two events are related, but I would like to credit someone I have never met for my sudden turn of luck and that happens TO BE YOU.

I was wondering if it would be possible to obtain a printed copy of this miraculous icon? Yes, I am rich now but still the roaming fees are killing me.

Dan is currently in hospice care after battling glioblastoma brain cancer over the last year. His two brain surgeries have rendered him cognitively and physically impaired, with significant left side neglect.

We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement during this time.

Cards may be sent to P.O. Box 177, Elko New Market, MN 55020.

Damn, he had kinda slipped off my radar. Sad to hear that it's taken this turn, but as far as I know, that's the most common outcome with brain cancers.

If you're painting these in a the lobby of a horse track, does that also include the NSFW ones?

― Pleasant Plains, Monday, August 4, 2008 9:56 AM

Not anything inappropriate, but someone has asked me to paint a old west type Gay 90's showgirl stretched out saucily on a divan while holding a tiny umbrella, so I might do that.

― Dan Lacey, Monday, August 4, 2008 10:25 AM

Marilynn McNair of Atlanta said she met Lacey outside Paisley Park in October 2016. A woman parked her car and asked Lacey what he was doing. He was holding a photo of Prince as a model for his painting. The woman blurted that she'd love to have that wonderful photo.

"It was his study picture, and he just gave it to her," McNair recalled.

I’m not sure if this will ever happen, but I’m willing to take a shot b/c Dan loved theses boards & talked to me constantly about them. He promised me a lot of male nudes & time ran out for us. Dan was my best friend & if anyone is has a male nude he painted that they’d like to sell, please let me know. I’ll always be looking for one.

As for all of his pancakes, I hope they stay beloved by the world. Dan wanted more for his art legacy beyond Prince. I was happy to see you all remembering him. I miss him every day.
